- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Performance Comparison of Various Tunnel Lighting Scenarios on Driver Lane-Changing Behaviours in a Driving Simulator
Ozturk, Omer Faruk; Mazlum, Yusuf; Aydin, Metin Mutlu; Coruh, Emine; Bayata, Halim Ferit
Recent advances in tunnel infrastructure have emphasized safety, operational efficiency and low operating costs. Modern tunnels are equipped with systems to improve both safety and operational performance. This study investigates the effect of tunnel lighting and vehicle breakdown scenarios on driver lane changing behaviour (LCB) using a driving simulator modelled on the third longest twin-tube tunnel. Data were collected from 125 drivers considering various driver characteristics with different lighting conditions and the presence of a stopped vehicle in a lane. The results show that drivers tend to slow down and change lanes more safely in response to red and flashing lights. In contrast, blue sky lights, which are designed to reduce stress and compare with other dangerous scenarios, had no significant effect on LCB. In addition, demographic factors such as gender and previous simulator experience played a role in influencing LCB tendencies. Female drivers and those familiar with simulators showed more cautious behaviour. The findings showed valuable insights into how tunnel lighting systems can improve safety. Results highlighted the potential for dynamic lighting and targeted driver training programs to improve tunnel safety. All these findings may contribute to ongoing efforts to improve traffic management and reduce accidents in tunnel environments.

The escalating occurrence of landslides has drawn increasing attention from the scientific community, primarily driven by a combination of natural phenomena such as unpredictable seismic events, intensified precipitation, and rapid snowmelt attributable to climate fluctuations, compounded by inadequacies in engineering practices during site selection. Within the scope of this investigation, contemporary geodetic techniques using the GNSS were employed to monitor structural and surface deformations in and around a hospital edifice situated within an ancient fossil landslide region. Additionally, inclinometer measurements facilitated the determination of slip circle parameters. A subsequent analysis integrated these datasets to scrutinize both the hospital structure and its surrounding slopes. In addition to the finite element method, four different limit equilibrium methods (Bishop, GLE–Morgenstern–Price, Spencer, and Janbu) were used in the evaluation of stability. Since the safety number determined in all analyses was <1, it was determined that the slope containing the hospital building was unstable. The movement has occurred again due to the additional load created by the hospital building built on the currently stable slope, the effect of surface and groundwater, and the improperly designed road route. As a result of geodetic monitoring, it was determined that the sliding speed on the surface was in the N-E direction and was approximately 3 cm, and this situation almost coincided with inclinometer measurements.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Evaluation of Cherts in Gumushane Province in Terms of Alkali Silica Reaction
Demir Şahin, Demet
Alkali–silica reaction (ASR) occurs when alkali oxides coming from the cement composition in concrete come together with reactive silica and moisture coming from the aggregate. Additional maintenance and repair costs caused by the development of ASR in concrete cause the cost to increase. However, thanks to the measures taken against ASR in the early period, it contributes to the creation of sustainable and durable concrete structures. The article investigated the usability of cherts with eight different chemical compositions as aggregates in ready-mixed concrete plants in Gümüşhane. Cherts have been investigated for alkaline reactivity and are intended to be used largely as a source for concrete plants. ASR length changes of the samples prepared according to ASTM C1260 standard were determined after 3, 7, 14, and 28 days of the curing period. Microstructural examination, ultrasonic P-wave velocity, and bending and compressive strength experiments supporting ASR were carried out. The obtained test results were compared between the reference (limestone) sample and each other, as well as with the values specified in the standards. The compressive and bending strength values of the samples increase depending on their ASR. It was observed that the crack structures and types increased depending on the increase in the crack values.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Seismic Disturbances and Geodetic Effects: Unraveling the Impact of the Mw = 6.2 Petrinja Earthquake on the Croatian Positioning System CROPOS
Bjelotomić Oršulić, Olga; Varga, Matej; Yalvac, Sefa
A destructive Mw = 6.2 earthquake struck NW Croatia on 29 December 2020, ranking among the most hazardous events in the country in the last century. This study assesses the impact of the earthquake on the permanent geodetic stations of the Croatian national positioning system. Using a novel approach, we combined positioning station data with satellite radar data for the first time in a geodynamic study across Croatia. The analysis involved collecting daily solutions data from 11 nearby network stations as well as multi-temporal satellite images before and after the earthquake. The results reveal a significant co-seismic shift, with the Sisak reference station experiencing the largest displacement of 5 cm to the southeast. Stations up to 100 km from the epicenter exhibited horizontal shifts between 1 and 2.5 cm and vertical shifts between 2 and 4 cm. Satellite images confirmed the co-seismic effects on the permanent stations. The study establishes a strong correlation between geodetic and geological findings, suggesting that vertical displacements result from superficial deposit consolidation in the river plains due to the earthquake shaking, while positional displacement reflects tectonic block movements along the activated strike-slip fault system. The late 2020 earthquake may have further relaxed the accumulated strain on the Mt. Medvednica thrust fault system, which had ruptured in early 2020 with a lower magnitude than expected.

Background and Objectives: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a chronic pain disorder that is ranked as one of the four most common rheumatological diseases in the world. This study aims to investigate the effects of an eight-week mat Pilates and electro-muscle stimulation (EMS) with combined mat Pilates exercises on pain, depression, anxiety, and strength in sedentary women. Methods: This study is a single-blind randomized controlled trial. A total of 30 sedentary female patients (Pilates (n = 15), EMS (n = 15)) diagnosed with FM were included in the study. The patients were subjected to Beck Depression (BDIs) and Anxiety Inventories (BAIs); a Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ); five different Single-Leg Hop Tests (SLHTs); modified push-up (MPU), Handgrip Strength (HGS), Deep Squat (DSQ), V-Sit Flexor, bent-arm hang (BA), sit-up and Biering-Sørensen tests; and anthropometric tests before and after the 8-week exercise program. Results: The eight weeks of mat Pilates exercises combined with mat Pilates and EMS revealed significant results (p < 0.05) in anthropometric data (abdomen, lower abdomen, hips) (p < 0.05) except for the results of chest circumference measurements (p > 0.05). In addition, there were statistically significant positive results in BDIs, BAIs, FIQs, lower extremity (all SLHTs and DSQ), upper extremity (MPU, HGS, BA), and core (V-SIT, sit-up, Biering-Sørensen test) strength test findings (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Combining the mat Pilates exercises with EMS is an effective and reliable method to improve the pain, anxiety, depression, and strength of female patients diagnosed with FM.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Modified REL-Based Piecewise Path Loss Modeling Approach for Shore-to-Ship Communication at 5.6 GHz
Eyuboglu, Ekrem; Hasirci Tugcu, Zeynep; Kuzulugil, Kenan; Cavdar, Ismail Hakki
The need for reliable and uninterrupted communication systems in the marine environment has become critically important with increasing maritime activities, environmental monitoring, and the spread of autonomous systems. However, the complex structure of electromagnetic wave propagation in a sea environment limits the accuracy of the existing propagation models. Thus, the Modified Round Earth Loss (REL) model was first developed in this study to estimate the path loss more accurately in shore-to-ship communication. Subsequently, a piecewise modeling approach based on the principle of two-segment data modeling was proposed. In the Modified REL model, unlike the traditional REL model, the paths and gains of the direct and reflected waves were not considered equal in the calculations. Moreover, unlike in the classical approach, the receiver height was not taken as a fixed value; the estimated best receiver height value for each measurement was included in the calculations as a representation of the effect of roughness in the sea environment. Thus, the model is better adapted to various environmental conditions. In addition, the proposed piecewise model divides the propagation medium into two regions using a break point calculated by Fresnel zone theory. The Modified REL model was used for the first region and the log-distance model was used for the second region. This method allows for more accurate modeling of signal behaviors, especially at different distances. Experimental measurements and performance evaluations conducted using four different shore-to-ship communication scenarios show that the Modified REL model shows an average improvement of up to 3% in Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values compared to the classical REL model. Additionally, the proposed piecewise model improves the fitting error of the Modified REL model, which models the data as a single whole, by an average of 22.25%. These findings emphasize the necessity of propagation models that are sensitive and adaptable to environmental changes for maritime communication.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Approximate Solutions of Fractional Differential Equations Using Optimal q-Homotopy Analysis Method: A Case Study of Abel Differential Equations
Şengül, Süleyman; Bekiryazici, Zafer; Merdan, Mehmet
In this study, the optimal q-Homotopy Analysis Method (optimal q-HAM) has been used to investigate fractional Abel differential equations. This article is designed as a case study, where several forms of Abel equations, containing Bernoulli and Riccati equations, are given with ordinary derivatives and fractional derivatives in the Caputo sense to present the application of the method. The optimal q-HAM is an improved version of the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) and its modification q-HAM and focuses on finding the optimal value of the convergence parameters for a better approximation. Numerical applications are given where optimal values of the convergence control parameters are found. Additionally, the correspondence of the approximate solutions obtained for these optimal values and the exact or numerical solutions are shown with figures and tables. The results show that the optimal q-HAM improves the convergence of the approximate solutions obtained with the q-HAM. Approximate solutions obtained with the fractional Differential Transform Method, q-HAM and predictor–corrector method are also used to highlight the superiority of the optimal q-HAM. Analysis of the results from various methods points out that optimal q-HAM is a strong tool for the analysis of the approximate analytical solution in Abel-type differential equations. This approach can be used to analyze other fractional differential equations arising in mathematical investigations.

Ozdemir, Samed; Akbulut, Zeynep; Karsli, Fevzi; Kavzoglu, Taskin
Water, indispensable for life and central to ecosystems, human activities, and climate dynamics, requires rapid and accurate monitoring. This is vital for sustaining ecosystems, enhancing human welfare, and effectively managing land, water, and biodiversity on both the local and global level. In the rapidly evolving domain of remote sensing and deep learning, this study focuses on water body extraction and classification through the use of recent deep learning models of visual foundation models (VFMs). Specifically, the Segment Anything Model (SAM) and Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) models have shown promise in semantic segmentation, dataset creation, change detection, and instance segmentation tasks. A novel two-step approach involving segmenting images via the Automatic Mask Generator method of the SAM and the zero-shot classification of segments using CLIP is proposed, and its effectiveness is tested on water body extraction problems. The proposed methodology was applied to both remote sensing imagery acquired from LANDSAT 8 OLI and very high-resolution aerial imagery. Results revealed that the proposed methodology accurately delineated water bodies across complex environmental conditions, achieving a mean intersection over union (IoU) of 94.41% and an F1 score of 96.97% for satellite imagery. Similarly, for the aerial imagery dataset, the proposed methodology achieved a mean IoU of 90.83% and an F1 score exceeding 94.56%. The high accuracy achieved in selecting segments predominantly classified as water highlights the effectiveness of the proposed model in intricate environmental image analysis.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Effects of Ultrafine Fly Ash against Sulphate Reaction in Concrete Structures
Demir Şahin, Demet; Eker, Hasan
In this study, Afşin Elbistan C-type fly ash (FA) was used, which protects against the sulphate reaction that damages concrete. The detrimental effects of post-reaction decrease with increasing fly ash fineness. The study used 10%, 30%, and 50% weight substitutes of cement. The fly ash was ground in a ball mill for 0, 10, 20, 30, 45, and 60 min, and Blaine fineness values of 1555, 1632, 2347, 2589, 2766, and 3433 cm2/g were obtained, respectively. The effect of the samples on the sulphate resistance was investigated by exposing the samples to 5% or 10% added sulphate solutions, and the compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity of the concrete were tested. The compressive strength values obtained decreased with the increase in sulphate content, and the increase in the grinding time and the amount of substituted FA increased the compressive strength values. It was observed that weight loss increased with increasing sulphate content and decreased with the addition of FA with a high Blaine fineness. It was determined that as the Blaine fineness value increased, the sulphate content, FA substitution amount, and ultrasonic pulse speed decreased. This study was carried out to determine the effects of fly ash used at different fineness and replacement ratios on the performance and strength of concrete after exposure to external influences such as sulphate. The use of fly ash instead of cement will reduce the use of waste materials and natural resources and prevent environmental pollution. The cost of cement and concrete will be reduced.

Oxidation is one of the most important factors limiting shelf life and is a major deterioration process affecting both the sensory and nutritional quality of food. The high oxidation stability of lipids, which can be improved by the addition of antioxidants, is important for health protection, food quality, and economic reasons. In recent years, research on plant-derived antioxidants for use in human health and food has steadily increased. The aim of this study was to compare the antioxidant effects of green tea powder (GTP) in butter with those of commercial antioxidants (BHA, BHT, α-tocopherol, and Trolox). In addition, the effects on colour, sensory, gross physicochemical properties, and β-carotene content were investigated in butter. After the separation of butter into five pieces, the first part was chosen as the control sample without GTP; the second part has 100 mg/kg of BHT added to it; and the third, fourth, and fifth parts had 1, 2, and 3% of GTP added in the samples. They were stored at 4 ± 1 °C. Analysis was performed at intervals of 15 days. According to the iron reduction, CUPRAC and FRAP methods were performed, and parallel results were observed. Using the radical elimination methods (ABTS, DPPH•, and DMPD•+), IC50 values were calculated for the samples. According to the IC50 values, the GTP-containing samples were good antioxidants. The total phenolic andf β-carotene contents increased as the GTP addition increased. The addition of GTP had an antioxidant capacity equal to or higher than that of the BHT-added sample. For the production of a sensory-pleasing, greenish-coloured, new functional butter, the 1% GTP addition showed the most positive results.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Predicting and Mapping Dominant Height of Oriental Beech Stands Using Environmental Variables in Sinop, Northern Turkey
Yener, Ismet; Guvendi, Engin
The dominant height of forest stands (SDH) is an essential indicator of site productivity in operational forest management. It refers to the capacity of a particular site to support stand growth. Sites with taller dominant trees are typically more productive and may be more suitable for certain management practices. The present study investigated the relationship between the dominant height of oriental beech stands and numerous environmental variables, including physiographic, climatic, and edaphic attributes. We developed models and generated maps of SDH using multilinear regression (MLR) and regression tree (RT) techniques based on environmental variables. With this aim, the total height, diameter at breast height, and age of sample trees were measured on 222 sample plots. Additionally, topsoil samples (0–20 cm) were collected from each plot to analyze the physical and chemical soil properties. The statistical results showed that latitude, elevation, mean annual maximum temperature, and several soil attributes (i.e., bulk density, field capacity, organic carbon, and pH) were significantly correlated with the SDH. The RT model outperformed the MLR model, explaining 57% of the variation in the SDH with an RMSE of 2.37 m. The maps generated by both models clearly indicated an increasing trend in the SDH from north to south, suggesting that elevation above sea level is a driving factor shaping forest canopy height. The assessments, models, and maps provided by this study can be used by forest planners and land managers, as there is no reliable data on site productivity in the studied region.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Calculation of the Effects of Silver (Ag) Dopant on Radiation Shielding Efficiency of BiPbSrCaCuO Superconductor Ceramics Using EGS4 Code
Kaya, Selim
In the current study, the effects of silver (Ag) additive on the radiation shielding efficiency of BiPbSrCaCuO superconducting ceramics was calculated using the EGS4 code and discussed theoretically by comparison with XCOM data. The mass attenuation coefficients (µ/ρ) for BiPbSrCaCuO superconductor ceramics and their contents were investigated theoretically (WinXcom and EGS4) at gamma-ray energies ranging from 59.5 to 1332 keV. The theoretical values were computed in the energy range from 1 keV to 100 MeV using the WinXcom program. Then, using the mass attenuation coefficients, some shielding parameters were determined, such as the mean free path (MFP), the half value layer (HVL), the effective atomic number (Zeff), the radiation protection efficiency (RPE), the macroscopic fast neutron removal cross-sections (ΣR, cm−1) and the gamma-ray kerma coefficients ((Formula presented.)). Theoretically, the results obtained with XCOM and EGS-4 were found to be in good agreement. The radiation shielding efficiency (RPE), neutron removal cross-section (ΣR, cm−1), maximum and semi-valent layer (HVL), and mean free path (MFP) values were found to be smaller for BiPbSrCaCuO superconducting ceramics as the silver (Ag) contribution was increased. Data from this study can guide further research and development of shielding materials for gamma-ray and neutron shielding.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Strength Analysis in Bonded, Bolted and Bolted-Bonded Joints, Single Lap Joints, Metal/Composite Plates
Sadık, Ali; Karabudak, Filiz
Today, especially in many fields that require structural durability, such as the aerospace and automotive industries, there has been a need to use different bonding techniques separately or together in order to use materials together with different mechanical properties. In this study, stress and damage analysis of single lap joints, bonding and bolt-bonding metal/composite joints under tensile loads were performed. The nine kinds of single lap joint models in different combinations (bonded, bolted and bolt-bonded) were prepared by using acrylic adhesive (Acrytron 1E1) and 100-25-3 mm in size; AZ91/AZ91, AZ91-carbon fiber and carbon fiber-carbon fiber plates. Some comparisons were carried out by examining the stresses and deformations that occur in joint models exposed to tensile and 4-point bending tests. As a result of the tensile test, it was determined that the highest maximum tensile stress occurred in AZ91-CF bolt-bonded samples. In the four-point bending test, the maximum shear force value was determined in the CF-CF bolted-bonded samples.
- MakaleAçık Erişim20232D and 3D Numerical Simulation of Dam-Break Flooding: A Case Study of the Tuzluca Dam, Turkey
Akgun, Cagri; Nas, Salim Serkan; Uslu, Akin
Unlike river floods, floods caused by dam breaks occur much more abruptly and at higher water velocities. The failure of a dam due to any reason can pose a significant threat to settlements in the downstream area due to the high volume of water in its reservoir. In this case study, 2D and 3D numerical failure simulations of Tuzluca Dam, to be built in the Igdir province of Turkey, was performed using the Flow3D Hydro software. The Shallow Water and Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were used to simulate flood propagation. In the numerical models, RNG k-ε was chosen as the turbulence model. In the analyses carried out under different scenarios, it was observed that in both methods (2D and 3D), significant flood depths would occur in two downstream village settlements. Within the scope of the study, the mortality rates in different dam-break scenarios of the Tuzluca Dam were also investigated. It has been observed that the dam failure time and breach geometry have a significant impact on the flood propagation and the loss of life in settlements. Additionally, a dam-break experiment in literature dam-break experiment was numerically solved using the Flow3D Hydro software to validate the numerical model, and a satisfactory harmony was observed between the experimental results and the numerical models. Although the 3D analysis provided a more accurate representation of the experimental results, it took approximately 20 times longer to complete the dam failure simulation in the case study compared to the 2D model. As a result, it has been determined that for comprehensive studies such as those of dam failures, 2D analyses may be more practical, while for smaller-scale scenarios or situations requiring greater precision, 3D modelling is appropriate.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022The Determinants of Immigrants’ Skill Composition
Karapınar Kocağ, Esra; Li, Yutong; Popescu, Cristina Raluca Gh.
Movements of labor across the world is an ongoing debate in the literature in terms of its drivers and results in sending and receiving areas. Skill composition of immigrant labor has been discussed by several papers, although they generally focused on visa policies or firm level productivity. However, this paper focuses on the relationship between immigrants’ educational attainment and government budgeting on research and development (R&D). Panel data analysis is applied for European countries, along with instrumental variable approach as a robustness check. Findings reveal that higher budget allocation for R&D is associated with higher skill level of immigrants within overall immigrant population. This finding is driven by young immigrants whose ages are between 25 and 34 and female immigrants in these countries, suggesting that this relationship varies among sub-groups of immigrants, which would have significant policy implications. Hence, the novel and original approach of the paper resides in the deciding factors of immigrants’ skill composition.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Finite-Time Neuro-Sliding-Mode Controller Design for Quadrotor UAVs Carrying Suspended Payload
Bingöl, Özhan; Güzey, Hacı Mehmet
Due to the quadrotor’s underactuated nature, suspended payload dynamics, parametric uncertainties, and external disturbances, designing a controller for tracking the desired trajectories for a quadrotor that carries a suspended payload is a challenging task. Furthermore, one of the most significant disadvantages of designing a controller for nonlinear systems is the infinite-time convergence to the desired trajectory. In this paper, a finite-time neuro-sliding mode controller (FTNSMC) for a quadrotor with a suspended payload that is subject to parametric uncertainties and external disturbances is designed. By constructing a finite-time sliding mode controller, the quadrotor can follow the reference trajectories in finite time. Furthermore, despite time-varying nonlinear dynamics, parametric uncertainties, and external disturbances, a neural network structure is added to the controller to effectively reduce chattering phenomena caused by high switching gains, and significantly reduce the size of the control signals. Following the completion of the controller design, the system’s stability is demonstrated using the Lyapunov stability criterion. Extensive numerical simulations with various scenarios are run to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2020In situ monitoring of sugar content in breakfast cereals using a novel ft-nir spectrometer
Aykas, Didem Peren; Ball, Christopher; Menevseoglu, Ahmed; Rodriguez-Saona, Luis E.
This research demonstrates simultaneous predictions of individual and total sugars in breakfast cereals using a novel, handheld near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic sensor. This miniaturized, battery-operated unit based on Fourier Transform (FT)-NIR was used to collect spectra from both ground and intact breakfast cereal samples, followed by real-time wireless data transfer to a commercial tablet for chemometric processing. A total of 164 breakfast cereal samples (60 store-bought and 104 provided by a snack food company) were tested. Reference analysis for the individual (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) and total sugar contents used high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Chemometric prediction models were generated using partial least square regression (PLSR) by combining the HPLC reference analysis data and FT-NIR spectra, and associated calibration models were externally validated through an independent data set. These multivariate models showed excellent correlation (Rpre ≥ 0.93) and low standard error of prediction (SEP ≤ 2.4 g/100 g) between the predicted and the measured sugar values. Analysis results from the FT-NIR data, confirmed by the reference techniques, showed that eight store-bought cereal samples out of 60 (13%) were not compliant with the total sugar content declaration. The results suggest that the FT-NIR prototype can provide reliable analysis for the snack food manufacturers for on-site analysis.
