Soil Amplification and Code Compliance: A Case Study of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes in Hayrullah Neighborhood

Avcı, Eyübhan; Afacan, Kamil Bekir; Deveci, Emre; Uysal, Melih; Altundaş, Suna; Balcı, Mehmet Can

In the earthquakes that occurred in the Pazarcık (Mw = 7.7) and Elbistan (Mw = 7.6) districts of Kahramanmaraş Province on 6 February 2023, many buildings collapsed in the Hayrullah neighborhood of the Onikişubat district. In this study, we investigated whether there was a soil amplification effect on the damage occurring in the Hayrullah neighborhood of the Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş Province. Firstly, borehole, SPT, MASW (multi-channel surface wave analysis), microtremor, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), and vertical electrical sounding (VES) tests were carried out in the field to determine the engineering properties and behavior of soil. Laboratory tests were also conducted using samples obtained from bore holes and field tests. Then, an idealized soil profile was created using the laboratory and field test results, and site dynamic soil behavior analyses were performed on the extracted profile. According to The Turkish Building Code (TBC 2018), the earthquake level DD-2 design spectra of the project site were determined and the average design spectrum was created. Considering the seismicity of the project site and TBC (2018) criteria (according to site-specific faulting, distance, and average shear wave velocity), 11 earthquake ground motion sets were selected and harmonized with DD-2 spectra in short, medium, and long periods. Using scaled motions, the soil profile was excited with 22 different earthquake scenarios and the results were obtained for the equivalent and non-linear models. The analysis showed that the soft soil conditions in the area amplified ground shaking by up to 2.8 times, especially for longer periods (1.0–2.5 s). This level of amplification was consistent with the damage observed in mid- to high-rise buildings, highlighting the important role of local site effects in the structural losses seen during the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.

Batcik, Sule; Tumkaya, Levent; Dil, Eyup; Kazancioglu, Leyla; Gaygusuz, Elif; Yazici, Zihni Acar; Ozden, Zulkar; Kilinc, Kagan; Mercantepe, Tolga

Backgrounds: Approximately 18 million individuals were diagnosed with cancer in 2018. The rate is predicted to exceed 22 million by 2030. Radiotherapy is an essential part of cancer therapy, with well documented local and systemic side effects, including oxidative stress and apoptosis. Kidney tissues are also exposed to the deleterious effects of radiotherapy, resulting in acute or chronic kidney function impairment. This study compared the effects of the potent selective α2-adrenoreceptor agonist dexmedetomidine and amifostine on oxidative stress and apoptosis in kidney damage induced by x-irradiation in rats. Methods: Forty Sprague Dawley rats were assigned into five groups: control, x-irradiation, x-irradiation + amifostine, x-irradiation + dexmedetomidine 100 µg/kg, and X-ray irradiation + dexmedetomidine 200 µg/kg. Results: Necrotic tubules and degenerative Bowman’s capsules were present in the x-irradiation group. An increase was determined in malondialdehyde (MDA), Cleaved Caspase-3, and 8-OHdG levels compared to the control group (p ≤ 0.05). In contrast, there was a decrease in necrotic tubules, degenerative Bowman’s capsules, and the levels of MDA, Cleaved Caspase-3, and 8-OHdG in the amifostine and dexmedetomidine 100 µg/kg and 200 µg/kg treatment groups (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: Alpha 2 adrenergic receptor agonists exhibit protective effects against kidney injury induced in association with x-irradiation by reducing oxidative stress and apoptosis.

Concurrent Validity of the Optojump Infrared Photocell System in Lower Limb Peak Power Assessment: Comparative Analysis with the Wingate Anaerobic Test and Sprint Performance

Khemiri, Aymen; Negra, Yassine; Ceylan, Halil İbrahim; Hajri, Manel; Njah, Abdelmonom; Hachana, Younes; Yıldız, Mevlüt; Bayrakdaroğlu, Serdar; Muntean, Raul Ioan; Attia, Ahmed

Aim: This study analyzed the concurrent validity of the Optojump infrared photocell system for estimating lower limb peak power by comparing it with the 15 s Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT) and examining relationships with sprint performance indicators. Methods: Twelve physically active university students (ten males, two females; age: 23.39 ± 1.47 years; body mass: 73.08 ± 9.19 kg; height: 173.67 ± 6.97 cm; BMI: 24.17 ± 1.48 kg·m−2) completed a cross-sectional validation protocol. Participants performed WAnT on a calibrated Monark ergometer (7.5% body weight for males, 5.5% for females), 30 s continuous jump tests using the Optojump system (Microgate, Italy), and 30 m sprint assessments with 10 m and 20 m split times. Peak power was expressed in absolute (W), relative (W·kg−1), and allometric (W·kg−0.67) terms. Results: Thirty-second continuous jump testing produced systematically higher peak power values across all metrics (p < 0.001). Mean differences indicated large effect sizes: relative power (Cohen’s d = 0.99; 18.263 ± 4.243 vs. 10.99 ± 1.58 W·kg−1), absolute power (d = 0.86; 1381.71 ± 393.44 vs. 807.28 ± 175.45 W), and allometric power (d = 0.79). Strong correlations emerged between protocols, with absolute power showing the strongest association (r = 0.842, p < 0.001). Linear regression analysis revealed that 30 s continuous jump-derived measurements explained 71% of the variance in Wingate outcomes (R2 = 0.710, p < 0.001). Sprint performance showed equivalent predictive capacity for both tests (Wingate: R2 = 0.66; 30 s continuous jump: R2 = 0.67). Conclusions: The Optojump infrared photocell system provides a valid and practical alternative to laboratory-based ergometry for assessing lower limb anaerobic power. While it systematically overestimates absolute values compared with the Wingate anaerobic test, its strong concurrent validity (r > 0.80), large effect sizes, and equivalent predictive ability for sprint performance (R2 = 0.66–0.71) confirm its reliability as a field-based assessment tool. These findings underscore the importance of sport-specific, weight-bearing assessment technologies in modern sports biomechanics, providing coaches, practitioners, and clinicians with a feasible method for monitoring performance, talent identification, and training optimization. The results further suggest that Optojump-based protocols can bridge the gap between laboratory precision and ecological validity, supporting both athletic performance enhancement and injury prevention strategies.

Gray Divorce in the Shadow of Modernization: Changing Family Dynamics in Türkiye

Aydin, Selcuk; Sahin, Abdurrahim; Bahadir, Muhammed

Gray divorce, defined as the dissolution of marriages among individuals aged 50 and above, has become an increasingly significant issue in Türkiye. Official statistics in Türkiye show that between 2001 and 2024, divorces among individuals aged 50 and above increased both in absolute numbers and as a proportion of total divorces, rising nearly threefold during this period. These increases reflect broader demographic and social changes, such as population ageing, longer life expectancy, changing expectations of marriage, and shifting gender norms. Using sociological literature on modernization and family change, as well as official statistical data, this review synthesises existing knowledge and situates gray divorce within global debates on family transformation. Findings from gray divorce studies indicate that women’s increasing autonomy, life cycle transitions such as retirement or empty nest experiences, and greater societal acceptance of divorce contribute to this trend. Furthermore, gray divorces have broad implications for intergenerational relationships, care responsibilities, and social policies. Specifically in Türkiye, regional differences show that divorce among the elderly is more prevalent in western urbanized provinces, where individualism and secular values prevail, and significantly less common in eastern regions, where traditional and religious norms are stronger. The increasing prevalence of this phenomenon highlights the need for more empirical research and policy responses that are appropriate to Türkiye’s demographic, regional, and cultural transformations.

Casein Supplementation Timing and Exercise Performance in Soccer Players: Pre-Sleep vs. Post-Exercise Intake—A Randomized Controlled Trial

Bayrakdaroğlu, Serdar; Ateş, Zeynep Hazal; Ceylan, Halil İbrahim; Kul, Murat; Muntean, Raul Ioan; Dhahbi, Wissem

Background: Nutrient timing strategies may influence recovery and performance in athletes; however, the effects of ingesting casein protein before sleep versus immediately after exercise remain unclear. This study compared the acute effects of pre-sleep and post-exercise ingestion of casein on high-intensity anaerobic performance in highly trained soccer players. Methods: Twenty-four highly trained male soccer players (mean age: 20.6 ± 1.8 years) were randomly assigned to three groups: post-exercise casein ingestion group (PECIG; n = 8), pre-sleep casein ingestion group (PSCIG; n = 8), and control group (CG; n = 8). Following a standardized high-intensity resistance training protocol, participants consumed 30 g of micellar casein dissolved in 300 mL of water either immediately after exercise or 30–60 min before bedtime. Performance was assessed using the Countermovement Jump (CMJ), the Illinois Agility Test (IAT), and the Running-based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST), which were conducted both before and 24 h after the training session. Results: Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed significant group-by-time effects for CMJ (F = 8.21, p = 0.002, η2p = 0.36) and RAST performance variables, including peak power (F = 6.94, p = 0.003, η2p = 0.32), mean power (F = 7.42, p = 0.002, η2p = 0.34), and fatigue index (F = 5.87, p = 0.008, η2p = 0.28). Post hoc analyses showed that PSCIG significantly improved CMJ (Δ = +1.45 cm; p < 0.001, d = 2.04) and RAST mean power (Δ = +125.14 W; p = 0.002, d = 1.55) compared with the control condition. PECIG significantly enhanced RAST peak power (Δ = +205.79 W; p = 0.001, d = 1.64), mean power (Δ = +128.43 W; p = 0.013, d = 1.24), and fatigue index (Δ = +4.12 W/s; p = 0.010, d = 1.29) relative to CG. No performance differences were observed between PSCIG and PECIG timing conditions (all p > 0.05). Conclusions: Both pre-sleep and post-exercise casein ingestion enhanced anaerobic performance in highly trained soccer players, with each timing method favoring different performance outcomes. However, neither strategy demonstrated superiority over the other, suggesting that casein timing may be flexibly applied according to athletes’ preferences and training contexts.

External Costs of Road Traffic Accidents in Türkiye: The Willingness-to-Pay Method

    Topcu, Rahmi; Coruh, Emine

Traffic accidents remain a major global burden, causing mortality, disability, and socio-economic losses that hinder sustainable development. Beyond human suffering, crashes place long-term pressures on health systems, labor markets, and national economies, disproportionately impacting low- and middle-income countries. Estimating the true societal costs of accidents is therefore essential for designing effective, equitable, and sustainable road safety policies. This study applies the Willingness-to-Pay (WTP) method to evaluate the external costs of traffic-related deaths and injuries in Türkiye between 2008 and 2018. By incorporating material and immaterial losses, the WTP framework captures a broader spectrum of impacts than traditional approaches, offering valuable insights into the scale of welfare losses and the value of risk reduction. The findings reveal that external costs rose substantially over the decade, from 1.63% to 2.72% of national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), underscoring that economic losses from road crashes are growing faster than the economy. These results highlight the need for systematic interventions that integrate road safety into national sustainability agendas, including safer infrastructure, behavioral programs, advanced vehicle technologies, and efficient emergency response systems. The evidence presented strengthens the case for prioritizing traffic safety as a fundamental component of sustainable transport and public health strategies.

The Analysis of Three-Dimensional Time-Fractional Helmholtz Model Using a New İterative Method

Şahin, Yasin; Merdan, Mehmet; Açıkgöz, Pınar

This paper proposes a novel analytical method to address the Helmholtz fractional differential equation by combining the Aboodh transform with the Adomian Decomposition Method, resulting in the Aboodh–Adomian Decomposition Method (A-ADM). Fractional differential equations offer a comprehensive framework for describing intricate physical processes, including memory effects and anomalous diffusion. This work employs the Caputo–Fabrizio fractional derivative, defined by a non-singular exponential kernel, to more precisely capture these non-local effects. The classical Helmholtz equation, pivotal in acoustics, electromagnetics, and quantum physics, is extended to the fractional domain. Following the exposition of fundamental concepts and characteristics of fractional calculus and the Aboodh transform, the suggested A-ADM is employed to derive the analytical solution of the fractional Helmholtz equation. The method’s validity and efficiency are evidenced by comparisons of analytical and approximation solutions. The findings validate that A-ADM is a proficient and methodical approach for addressing fractional differential equations that incorporate Caputo–Fabrizio derivatives.

Flexural Behavior and Sustainability of Dual-Waste Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Designed for Pavement Applications

Seferoğlu, Mehmet Tevfik; Aksüt, Yavuz Selim; Seferoğlu, Ayşegül Güneş

This study evaluates the mechanical performance and sustainability potential of fiber-reinforced concrete incorporating mine tailings as the fine aggregate and waste tire wire as the reinforcing fiber. The concrete mixtures contained 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6% waste tire wire with the natural fine aggregate replaced entirely with Pb-Zn-Cu tailings. The mixtures were tested for porosity, water absorption, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, toughness, fracture energy, and ductility to assess their mechanical performance and durability. The mine tailings improved the microstructure and reduced water absorption, particularly with tire wire. Using waste tire wire improved the compressive, tensile, and flexural performance; in particular, W-6 showed a 18.2% rise in compressive strength and a more than twofold increase in flexural strength relative to the control mix. The flexural toughness and fracture energy rose by up to 161%, while the ductility peaked at a fiber content of 0.2%. These gains were attributed to fiber crack-bridging and post-cracking energy absorption. The dual-waste system also reduced porosity, improved durability, and demonstrated strong potential for rigid pavement applications such as highways, industrial yards, and airport runways that require high fatigue resistance and a long service life. Beyond technical performance, this approach offers a sustainable solution that lowers maintenance, reduces life-cycle costs, and aligns with circular economy principles.

Feature Fusion Using Deep Learning Algorithms in Image Classification for Security Purposes by Random Weight Network

Kiran, Mustafa Servet; Seyfi, Gokhan; Yilmaz, Merve; Esme, Engin; Wang, Xizhao

Automated threat detection in X-ray security imagery is a critical yet challenging task, where conventional deep learning models often struggle with low accuracy and overfitting. This study addresses these limitations by introducing a novel framework based on feature fusion. The proposed method extracts features from multiple and diverse deep learning architectures and classifies them using a Random Weight Network (RWN), whose hyperparameters are optimized for maximum performance. The results show substantial improvements at each stage: while the best standalone deep learning model achieved a test accuracy of 83.55%, applying the RWN to a single feature set increased accuracy to 94.82%. Notably, the proposed feature fusion framework achieved a state-of-the-art test accuracy of 97.44%. These findings demonstrate that a modular approach combining multi-model feature fusion with an efficient classifier is a highly effective strategy for improving the accuracy and generalization capability of automated threat detection systems.

Slag Substitution Effect on Features of Alkali-Free Accelerator-Reinforced Cemented Paste Backfill

    Cavusoglu, Ibrahim

Cemented paste backfill (CPB) improves underground stability by filling mine voids, but the high cost of cement presents economic challenges for miners. While alternative binders and admixtures have been explored, the combined impact of slag substitution and alkali-free (AF) accelerators on CPB performance is not yet fully understood. This study investigates the influences of slag substitution and AF accelerators on the performance of CPB through a comprehensive experimental approach. CPB samples were prepared with slag substitution ratios of 25%, 50%, and 75%, maintaining a fixed AF accelerator content of 0.4%. Various test techniques, including unconfined comprehensive strength (UCS), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal analysis (TG/DTA), were employed to study their mechanical and microstructural properties. Monitoring tests were also conducted to thoroughly assess the performance of CPB, including suction (self-desiccation), electrical conductivity (EC), and volumetric water content (VWC) tests. The results showed that the PCI50–SL50–0.4AF sample exhibited 2.3 times higher strength than the control sample for 28 days, with this improvement attributed to enhanced pozzolanic reactions contributing to better microstructural compactness. Monitoring tests revealed accelerated hydration kinetics and reduced water content in slag-reinforced CPB, highlighting the significant role of AF accelerator in facilitating rapid setting and improving early-age mechanical strength. Microstructural findings revealed that porosity decreased and C–S–H gel formation increased in the specimen containing slag and AF accelerators, contributing to increased strength and durability. These findings highlight the potential usage of slag and AF accelerators to enhance CPB’s mechanical, microstructural, and hydration properties, offering significant benefits for mining operations by improving backfill performance, while contributing to environmental sustainability through reduced cement consumption and associated CO2 emissions.

Microplastics in Dairy Products: Occurrence, Characterization, Contamination Sources, Detection Methods, and Future Challenges

    Gürmeriç, Hüseyin Ender; Basaran, Burhan

In this study, data from 17 studies reporting the presence of microplastics in milk and dairy products in the literature were examined with a product-based systematic approach. In addition, geographical comparisons were made between different countries. In milk and dairy products, the concentration of microplastics has been reported to exhibit a broad range, extending from non-detectable levels to as high as 10,040 MPs per kilogram, contingent upon the specific product types. Milk powder (especially baby milk powder) stands out as the riskiest product group in terms of microplastic content. Although the sizes and colors of the detected microplastics vary significantly, the fiber form is generally predominant. While polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide and polyester are among the polymers frequently detected, high-temperature-resistant industrial polymers such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polysulfone, polyurethane were also encountered. In addition, the presence of some polymers (such polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane) that are toxicologically risky for human health was reported in the studies. In addition, the study evaluated the chemical, enzymatic and physical methods used for the separation and identification of MPs; the advantages and limitations of FT-IR, Raman and other analysis techniques were revealed. This study reveals that MP contamination in milk and dairy products is a multidimensional problem. The findings show that milk and dairy products are highly susceptible to plastic contamination at every stage of production.

The Role of Green Finance in Investing in Environmentally Friendly Technologies: Risks and Returns

Erdoğdu, Aylin; Dayi, Faruk; Özbek, Adem; Ganji, Farshad; Benek, Ayhan

This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the performance and systemic dynamics of green finance investments in environmentally sustainable technologies from 2000 to 2025, complemented by scenario-based projections extending to 2050. Empirical results indicate a consistent increase in portfolio returns—from 5.2% in 2000 to 11.8% in 2025—accompanied by a significant reduction in annualized volatility, declining from 8.1% to 3.0%. Concurrently, the portfolio’s sustainability score improved from 0.45 to a full alignment score of 1.00, reflecting a strategic shift towards high-impact green assets. Building on these observed trends, this study introduces the Eco-Financial Resonance Theory (EFRT), an original conceptual framework that interprets sustainable transitions as emergent phenomena arising from resonant interactions among four interdependent domains: financial flows, technological innovation, policy and regulation, and environmental outcomes. Scenario analyses highlight the pivotal roles of policy ambition and innovation pathways in shaping long-term risk-return profiles, with optimistic forecasts projecting returns exceeding 40% by 2050, alongside markedly reduced risks. Regional analysis reveals persistent disparities, underscoring the necessity for context-specific strategies to enhance systemic coherence. Beyond its theoretical contributions, EFRT offers actionable insights for investors and policymakers aiming to align profitability with ecological sustainability. Collectively, these findings position green finance not merely as a niche or ancillary activity but as a transformative mechanism for enabling scalable and resilient sustainability transitions amid accelerating global environmental challenges.

The Effect of Physical Activity on Anterior Segment Structures and the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer: A Comparison of Elite Athletes and Sedentary Individuals

Deniz Genç, Çiğdem; Korkmaz Salkılıç, Esra; Anıl, Berna; Akdemir, Enes; Yılmaz, Coşkun; Yılmaz, Ali Kerim

Background and Objectives: The study aims to evaluate the effects of regular physical activity on ocular structures by comparing eye anterior segment structures and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) parameters between elite individual athletes and sedentary persons. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included 75 participants (33 female and 42 male) aged 18–32 years. Participants consisted of 33 elite individual athletes (66 eyes) aged 18–32 years and 42 sedentary individuals (84 eyes) aged 18–28 years. The elite athlete group consisted of participants who had trained ≥ 3 times per week for the past 5 years and had competition experience in tennis (n = 11), badminton (n = 8), and short/middle distance running (n = 14). Sedentary participants had not engaged in regular physical activity for the last 2 years. Anterior segment structures were measured with ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), RNFL parameters were measured with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured with a non-contact pneumotonometer. Results: When the anterior segment parameters were compared, a significance was found in the group effect (p = 0.021, (Formula presented.) = 0.036) in the TIA500 value, but the effects of side and gender were insignificant (p > 0.05). While the gender effect was found to be significant for the AOD500 (p = 0.030, (Formula presented.) = 0.032) and ARA500 (p = 0.019, (Formula presented.) = 0.038) variables, the group and side effects were statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference in IOP values between sedentary individuals (15.82 ± 2.69) and athletes (14.61 ± 1.80) (p = 0.004, (Formula presented.) = 0.057). There was a significant difference between the right (15.71 ± 2.70) and left (14.87 ± 2.02) sides (p = 0.027, (Formula presented.) = 0.033). The effect of gender was not significant (p > 0.05). When the results were evaluated, a significant effect of the TEMPORAL side in RNFL parameters (p = 0.003, (Formula presented.) = 0.058) was observed. Correlations were seen between the anterior segment and RNFL parameters in both groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Athletes exhibited lower IOP compared with sedentary individuals, with similar RNFL parameters but distinct correlation patterns with anterior segment structures. These findings suggest that ocular parameters should be evaluated in an integrated manner and that physical activity may support ocular health by contributing to IOP reduction and potentially slowing the progression of eye diseases.

Sol–Gel Synthesized CuFe2O4-Modified Biochar Derived from Tea Waste for Efficient Ni(II) Removal: Adsorption, Regeneration, and ANN Modeling

Duran, Celal; Ozeken, Sengul Tugba; Seker, Serdal; Ozdes, Duygu

In the present research, a novel magnetic adsorbent was developed via the sol–gel method by coating CuFe2O4 nanoparticles on biochar sourced from brewed tea waste. The synthesized adsorbent was utilized for the removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous media. The adsorption efficiency of Ni(II) ions was assessed under crucial experimental conditions such as initial solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and initial Ni(II) concentration. The adsorbent exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics, achieving equilibrium in approximately 15 min, and maintained high efficiency across a wide pH range. Adsorption experiments were conducted for Ni(II) solutions at their natural pH (5.6) to minimize chemical usage and enhance process simplicity. An impressive maximum adsorption capacity of 232.6 mg g−1 was recorded, outperforming many previously reported adsorbents. Furthermore, desorption studies demonstrated nearly 100% recovery of Ni(II) ions using 1.0 M HCl solution, indicating excellent regeneration potential of the adsorbent. Additionally, the prediction performance of an artificial neural network (ANN) model was evaluated to predict Ni(II) removal efficiency based on experimental variables, showing strong agreement with experimental data. Isotherm and kinetic models were also applied to the data to estimate the adsorption mechanisms. These findings demonstrate the promise of CuFe2O4-modified tea waste biochar for sustainable water treatment applications.

A Safe and Efficient Brain–Computer Interface Using Moving Object Trajectories and LED-Controlled Activation

Aydin, Sefa; Melek, Mesut; Gökrem, Levent

Nowadays, brain–computer interface (BCI) systems are frequently used to connect individuals who have lost their mobility with the outside world. These BCI systems enable individuals to control external devices using brain signals. However, these systems have certain disadvantages for users. This paper proposes a novel approach to minimize the disadvantages of visual stimuli on the eye health of system users in BCI systems employing visual evoked potential (VEP) and P300 methods. The approach employs moving objects with different trajectories instead of visual stimuli. It uses a light-emitting diode (LED) with a frequency of 7 Hz as a condition for the BCI system to be active. The LED is assigned to the system to prevent it from being triggered by any involuntary or independent eye movements of the user. Thus, the system user will be able to use a safe BCI system with a single visual stimulus that blinks on the side without needing to focus on any visual stimulus through moving balls. Data were recorded in two phases: when the LED was on and when the LED was off. The recorded data were processed using a Butterworth filter and the power spectral density (PSD) method. In the first classification phase, which was performed for the system to detect the LED in the background, the highest accuracy rate of 99.57% was achieved with the random forest (RF) classification algorithm. In the second classification phase, which involves classifying moving objects within the proposed approach, the highest accuracy rate of 97.89% and an information transfer rate (ITR) value of 36.75 (bits/min) were achieved using the RF classifier.

Effects of Swedish Massage at Different Times of the Day on Dynamic and Static Balance in Taekwondo Athletes

Bayrakdaroğlu, Serdar; Eken, Özgür; Bayer, Ramazan; Yagin, Fatma Hilal; Kızılet, Tuba; Kayhan, Recep Fatih; Ardigò, Luca Paolo

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of different durations of Swedish massage on the static and dynamic balance at different times of the day in taekwondo athletes. Twelve taekwondo athletes who had been practicing on a regular basis for more than 5 years participated in this study. Taekwondo athletes completed static and dynamic balance tests either after a no-massage protocol (NMP), a five-minute massage protocol (5MMP), a ten-minute massage protocol (10MMP), or a fifteen-minute massage protocol (15MMP) two times a day in the morning (08:00–12:00) and in the evening (16:00–20:00), on non-consecutive days. The findings of this study suggest that the duration of the massage has a discernible impact on dynamic balance, particularly with regard to the right foot. Taekwondo athletes who received a 10MMP or 15MMP displayed significantly improved dynamic balance compared to those in the NMP. Importantly, these improvements were independent of the time of day when the massages were administered. It underscores the potential benefits of incorporating short-duration Swedish massages into taekwondo athletes’ pre-competition routines to enhance dynamic balance. These findings highlight the potential benefits of incorporating short-duration Swedish massages into taekwondo athletes’ pre-competition routines to enhance dynamic balance, a critical component of their performance, regardless of the time of day.

Oxylipins are oxidized fatty acids, both saturated and unsaturated, formed through pathways that involve singlet oxygen or dioxygen-mediated oxygenation reactions and are primarily produced by enzyme families such as cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases, and cytochrome P450. These lipid-based complex bioactive molecules are pivotal signal mediators, acting in a hormone-like manner in the pathophysiology of numerous diseases, especially cardiometabolic diseases via modulating plenty of mechanisms. It has been reported that omega-6 and omega-3 oxylipins are important novel biomarkers of cardiometabolic diseases. Moreover, collected literature has noted that diet and dietary components, especially fatty acids, can modulate these oxygenated lipid products since they are mainly derived from dietary omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) or linoleic acid and α-linolenic by elongation and desaturation pathways. This comprehensive review aims to examine their correlations to cardiometabolic diseases and how diets modulate oxylipins. Also, some aspects of developing new biomarkers and therapeutical utilization are detailed in this review.

Superplasticizer Dosage Effect on Strength, Microstructure and Permeability Enhancement of Cementitious Paste Fills

    Cavusoglu, Ibrahim

A cementitious paste fill (CPF) ensures the long-age stability of underground cavities. Recently, superplasticizers, specifically ones that are polycarboxylate ether-based, have been incorporated to enhance CPF performance, yet their long-term effects on permeability, mechanical properties, and microstructures remain unclear. This study investigates these effects with CPF samples containing varying superplasticizer dosages (0%, 1%, 3%, 5%) that have been cured for up to 150 days. Rheological assessments (slump cone, vane shear tests), unconfined compressive strength testing, microstructural characterization (MIP, SEM), and hydraulic conductivity measurements were performed alongside XRD and thermal analyses (TAns) on high w/c (2) cement paste samples. The results showed that superplasticizer addition reduced CPF water content by 23% and yield stress by six times, aiding slurry transport. Long-term strength was enhanced by up to 2.4 times compared to the control samples, indicating improved underground stability. Superplasticizers altered the CPF samples stress–strain responses, increasing their load-bearing capacity. TG/DTG and XRD analyses revealed that hydration product development increased and porosity decreased in the presence of a superplasticizer. Hydraulic conductivity and permeability also decreased significantly. SEM and MIP analyses showed that the superplasticizer enhanced denser microstructures with fewer pores and fractures. These findings offer promising implications for designing CPFs with improved strength, durability, and environmental sustainability.

From Garden to Pillow: Understanding the Relationship between Plant-Based Nutrition and Quality of Sleep

Arslan, Neslihan; Bozkır, Eda; Koçak, Tevfik; Akin, Meleksen; Yilmaz, Birsen

The effect of diet on sleep quality has been addressed in many studies; however, whether/how plant-based diets (PBDs) impact sleep-related parameters has not been explored in detail. This review aims to give an overview of the components of PBDs and the possible mechanisms through which PBDs may improve sleep quality. Studies have indicated that diets such as PBDs, which are typically high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and fiber, are associated with better sleep outcomes, including less fragmented sleep and improved sleep duration. Several mechanisms may explain how PBDs impact and/or improve sleep outcomes. Firstly, PBDs are characteristically rich in certain nutrients, such as magnesium and vitamin B6, which have been associated with improved sleep patterns. Secondly, PBDs are often lower in saturated fats and higher in fiber, which may contribute to better overall health, including sleep quality. Additionally, plant bioactive compounds like phytochemicals and antioxidants in fruits, vegetables, and herbs may have sleep-promoting effects. According to available data, PBD and Mediterranean diet elements promise to enhance sleep quality; however, it is crucial to note that diets should be customized based on each person’s needs.
