Heat and drought resistance criteria in spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.): Morpho-physiological parameters for heat tolerance

Bahar, Bilge; Yildirim, Mehmet; Yucel, Cemal

This study was aimed at evaluating some morpho-physiological parameters such as stomatal conductance (gs), canopy temperature (CT), canopy temperature depression (CTD) and stay green duration (SGD) in terms of heat tolerance. For this purpose, trials designed according to randomized complete blocks were conducted with twenty-four spring bread wheat genotypes as three replicated in the Research and Application Area of Field Crops Department of Agricultural Faculty of Cukurova University in 2002 to 2003 and 2003 to 2004 growth seasons. The measurements of gs were made at two different dates at heading stage in 2003 to 2004 growth season. CT was measured at two growth stages (late milky and soft dough) in 2002 to 2003 (first) season and it was also measured at two different hours at the complete heading stage in 2003 to 2004 (second) season. CTD was measured at two different hours at the complete heading stage in the second season. The other morpho- physiological parameter was SGD, which was determined in the first growth season. As a result: (1) The high gs values were observed at both measuring dates even though there was no significant differences among the genotypes; (2) CT showed significant differences except T2 measurement in 2003 to 2004 season, yet significant negative correlations were found between CT and grain yield (GY) in 2003 to 2004 season and in general mean; (3) Despite not being significant differences among the genotypes, a strong positive correlation was found between CTD and GY; (4) In spite of the fact that genotypes did not show any statistical differences, it was found that SGD had a negative significant correlation with CT but positive non-significant correlation with GY. It is concluded from assessments of all physiological traits that such genotypes as Kauz/Altar 84//Ads, Varona Cno 79, Mon's'/Ald's'//Bow's' and WL6718 can be high yielding even if under heat stressed conditions, and can be used as gene pool in wheat breeding programs for tolerance to heat stress.

Solution of nonlinear oscillators with fractional nonlinearities by using the modified differential transformation method

    Merdan, Mehmet; Gökdoǧan, Ahmet

In this paper, an aproximate analytical method called the differential transform method (DTM) is used as a tool to give approximate solutions of nonlinear oscillators with fractional nonlinearites. The differential transformation method is described in a nuthsell. DTM can simply be applied to linear or nonlinear problems and reduces the required computational effort. The proposed scheme is based on the differential transform method (DTM), Laplace transform and Padé approximants. The results to get the differential transformation method (DTM) are applied Padé approximants. The reliability of this method is investigated by comparison with the classical fourth-order Runge-Kutta (RK4) method and Cos-AT and Sine-AT method. Our the presented method showed results to analytical solutions of nonlinear ordinary differential equation. Some plots are gived to shows solutions of nonlinear oscillators with fractional nonlinearites for illustrating the accurately and simplicity of the methods.

Synthesis, characterization and catalytic investigation of novel polymeric thiourea

    Saribiyik, O.Y.; Serin, S.

In this study, in order to obtain polymeric thiourea compounds which have unsolubulity properties and higher metal content, new reaction pathways based on the use of the template effect were investigated. For this purpose, the reactions between different diamines, such as ethylendiamine, ortho (o-) and para (p-) phenylenediamine, and carbon disulfide (CS2) were investigated and optimized by using the template effect of Ni(II). Catalytic activity of the polymeric structure on oxidation of styrene was also investigated in terms of different parameters such as heat (25 and 80° C), time (4 and 8 h), oxidant hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), di-tert-butyl peroxide (DtBP) and solvent (acetonitrile and benzene). The products have been characterized on the basis of analytical and spectral method, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H- and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance, gel-permeation chromatography, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, atomic adsorbtion spectrometry, gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry.

Ilyasoglu, Huri; Gultekin-Ozguven, Mine; Ozcelik, Beraat

The aim of this study was to synthesize human milk fat substitute (HMFS) enriched with medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) by Lipozyme® RM IM-catalyzed acidolysis. The reaction substrates (tripalmitin, hazelnut oil fatty acids and Neobee® fatty acids) were specially chosen to mimic human milk fats and to enrich HMFS with MCFAs. Substrate molar ratio, reaction temperature and enzyme content were used to model and to optimize the reaction conditions via response surface methodology. The experiment was carried out at the optimal condition generated from the model yielded structured lipids with caprylic acid (12.8 g/100 g), capric acid (10.6 g/100 g) and palmitic acid (30 g/100 g). These values were found similar to the values predicted by the model (15.9 g/100 g, 14.1 g/100 g and 33.3 g/100 g). It can be concluded that the potential use of the structured lipids (SLs) produced in infant formulas provide energy source delivering a reduced calorie value for newborn, term and preterm infants.

Solutions for 4D cadastre - with a case study on utility networks

Döner, Fatih; Thompson, Rod; Stoter, Jantien; Lemmen, Christiaan; Ploeger, Hendrik; van Oosterom, Peter; Zlatanova, Sisi

The increasing complexity and flexibility of modern land use requires that cadastres need to manage information on the third and temporal (fourth) dimension. This article considers the registration of legal space of utility networks in cadastre in this 3D + time (=4D) context. A requirement analysis in three countries that have methods to register utility networks complying with their legal, organizational and technical structure (Turkey, the Netherlands and Queensland, Australia) is the basis for three alternatives for 4D cadastre to register utility networks. The three alternatives are analysed with respect to legal, organizational and technical cadastral requirements. This article presents a case study and a prototype from the Netherlands. In this country by law utilities are considered to be real estate objects with obligatory registration of ownership and geometry. This study shows that the 3D space and separate temporal attributes approach (state-based model) is a very promising solution to maintain temporal changes of utility networks and that this approach is to be preferred above the current practice, where the 3D and temporal aspects are not considered when registering a network.

Quality characteristics of registered cultivars and advanced lines of durum wheats grown in different ecological regions of Turkey

Sakin, Mehmet A.; Sayaslan, Abdulvahit; Duzdemir, Oral; Yuksel, Ferhat

In this study, pastaquality- associated characteristics of 25 durum wheat genotypes were investigated. Durum wheat genotypes consisted of 13 advanced experimental lines and 12 registered cultivars that were grown in three different locations of Turkey for 2 yr. Genotype, location, year and their interactions were found to be statistically significant in terms of all investigated quality characteristics. Mean quality parameters for the genotypes varied as follows: yellowberry kernel 1.7-6.1%, pigment content 3.67-8.31 mg kg-1, lipoxygenase (LOX) activity 12.9-27.9 EU g-1, protein content 10.8-11.8% (14% mb), gluten index (GI) 12-61, sodium dodecyl sulphate-sedimentation volume 17.3-28.7 mL, specific sedimentation volume 1.60-2.52 mL. Of the genotypes, 10 contained γ-gliadin 45 and six γ-gliadin 42 proteins. Except for Zenit, none of the registered cultivars and advanced experimental lines investigated in this study were able to meet simultaneously the requirements for high-quality pasta products; yet certain experimental lines prevailing in specific quality characteristics, such as Line-Gdem- 2, Line-Gdem-12 and Line-20, may be used for further breeding purposes. The results of this study also imply that grain yield and quality should be taken collectively into consideration in wheat breeding programs.

Öztürk Sarikaya, Sevim Beyza; Topal, Fevzi; Şentürk, Murat; Gülin, Ihami; Supuran, Claudiu T.

Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAIs) are a class of pharmaceuticals used as antiglaucoma agents, diuretics, antiepileptics, in the management of mountain sickness, gastric and duodenal ulcers, neurological disorders or osteoporosis. We report here the inhibitory capacities of some phenolic compounds against three human CA isozymes (hCA I, hCA II, and hCA VI) and the gill carbonic anhydrase of the teleost fish Dicentrarchus labrax (European seabass) (dCA). The isozymes showed quite diverse inhibition profiles with these compounds. These data may lead to design novel CAIs with a diverse inhibition mechanism compared to sulfonamide/sulfamate inhibitors.

By incorporating pay satisfaction at Level 1 and Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) at Level 2, we investigated the relationship between the love of money and self-reported corrupt intent among 6,382 managers in 31 geopolitical entities across six continents. Our significant cross-level three-way interaction effect showed that for managers with high pay satisfaction, the intensity (slope) of the love of money to corrupt intent relationship was almost identical in high or low CPI entities but the former had the lowest magnitude of corrupt intent, whereas the latter had the highest. For those with low pay satisfaction, the slope was the steepest in high CPI entities, but was flat in the low CPI entities and the difference between the two was significant.

The effect of material properties on the seismic performance of Arch Dams

    Sevim, B.

The paper investigates the effect of material properties on the seismic performance of arch dam-reservoir-foundation interaction systems based on the Lagrangian approach using demand-capacity ratios. Type-5 arch dam is selected as a numerical application. The linear time history analyses of the arch dam-reservoir-foundation interaction system are carried out for different material properties. The foundation is taken into account as massless; behaviour of the reservoir is assumed to be linearly elastic, inviscid and irrotational. The north-south component of the Erzincan earthquake in 1992 is chosen as a ground motion. Dynamic equations of motions obtained from 3-D finite element modelling of the coupled system are solved by using the Newmark integration algorithm. The damage levels of the coupled system for the different material properties are demonstrated by using demand-capacity ratios and cumulative inelastic durations. The time histories and maximum values of the displacements and principal stresses, and performance curves, are obtained from linear analyses. It is clearly seen from the study that the different material properties affect the seismic behaviour of the dam.

Transition from shoshonitic to adakitic magmatism in the eastern Pontides, NE Turkey: Implications for slab window melting

Eyuboglu, Yener; Chung, Sun-Lin; Santosh, M.; Dudas, Francis O.; Akaryali, Enver

The formation of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt has been widely assigned to a northward subduction of the Neotethyan oceanic slab during the late Mesozoic-Cenozoic. Here we provide an alternate model based on new geological, geochemical and isotopic data. The magmatic activity in the far south of the belt started in the early Campanian with shoshonitic trachyandesites and associated pyroclastics. This sequence is covered by the late Campanian-early Maastrichtian reefal limestones and another stage of high-K volcanism represented by analcimized leucite-rich ultrapotassic rocks of the Maastrichtian-early Paleocene (?) ages. The shoshonitic and ultrapotassic rocks, with K2O contents ranging from 0.26 to 6.95 wt.%, display broadly similar rare earth and multi-element distribution patterns. Both rock types are enriched in LILE and LREE and depleted in HFSE (Nb,Ta and Ti), suggesting a subduction-enriched mantle source for the magma generation. Subsequently, during the late Paleocene, a stage of acidic magmatism (SiO2 of 53.25-73.61 wt.%) that shows adakitic geochemical characteristics including high Sr/Y (46-416) and La/Yb (11-51) and low Y (2.6-12.2 ppm), is documented characterized by melting of a mafic source such as the MORB crust with garnet in the residue. The adakitic magmatism began at similar to 56 Ma and migrated toward the north through time, culminating with porphyritic andesites (similar to 47 Ma) that were emplaced in the Gumushane-Bayburt line and its vicinity. North of this line, coeval magmas show typical calc-alkaline nature and continued to develop toward further north until the middle to late Eocene. Based on the spatial and temporal variations in the magmas generated in the eastern Pontides orogenic belt, we propose a new geodynamic model to explain the tectonomagmatic evolution of these rocks and correlate the adakitic magmatism to ridge subduction and slab window process within a south-dipping subduction zone. Our model is in contrast to the previous proposals which envisage partial melting or delamination of thickened lower continental crust due to the collision in the south during the Paleocene-Eocene. Objective: This study aimed at evaluating the efficiency of applying tumescent anesthesia before an ablation procedure and continuously during endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) (combined tumescent technique) of saphenous vein insufficiency to reduce the patients pain and discomfort. Methods: Twenty-five patients with 31 duplex-confirmed great saphenous vein insufficiency underwent endovenous laser (940 nm) varicose vein treatment between December 2009 and April 2010. The patients were randomized in two groups. In group A (15 patients) tumescent anesthesia was used before the ablation procedure and in group B (10 patients) tumescent anesthesia was used before and continuously during the procedure. Patients were scheduled for a three-day examination after EVLT to assess the level of pain experienced. Results: According to the statistic analysis we observed that the mean level of pain score for the patients given classical tumescent anesthesia showed a higher level (P=0.003) compared with the patients given tumescent anesthesia in the combined procedure. Conclusion: Combination technique of administering tumescent anesthesia before ablation and continuously during the EVLT procedure may be an alternative way to reduce the patient's peroperative pain and discomfort. Structure and geochemistry of an Alaskan-type ultramafic-mafic complex in the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey

Eyuboglu, Yener; Dilek, Yildirim; Bozkurt, Erdin; Bektas, Osman; Rojay, Bora; Sen, Cuneyt

The Karayasmak ultramafic-mafic association (KUMA) in NE Turkey represents an Alaskan-type, pre-Liassic intrusion in the Pulur metamorphic massif and is one of many such intrusive complexes that were emplaced into the continental basement of the Eastern Pontides belt during the pre-Liassic. Its main lithological units include plagioclase peridotite, melagabbronorite, banded gabbro and anorthosite (Phase-I), gabbro-pegmatite dikes (Phase-II), unmetamorphosed banded gabbro (Phase-III), cumulate olivine gabbronorite (Phase-IV), and non-cumulate gabbroic dikes and stocks (Phase-V). The contact relations between these units are gradational or intrusive, with the peridotites (Phase-I) enveloping the cumulate gabbronorites (Phase-IV) in the center of the elliptical body, displaying a concentric reverse-zoning pattern. Cr-Al spinel, plagioclase, and olivine are the first crystallizing phases in all cumulate rocks, whereas pyroxene, hornblende, phlogopite, magnetite, and ilmenite represent the intercumulus phases. The existence of hornblende and phlogopite, the high Wo and Cr2O3 contents of clinopyroxene, and the high Fo and NiO contents of olivine indicate that the KUMA units were the near-liquidus fractional crystallization products of hydrous basaltic magma. The Phase-I and Phase-III cumulates are slightly enriched in LILE and LREE, depleted in HFSE and HREE with respect to chondrite and primitive mantle, and show negative Nb, Zr, Hf and Ti anomalies. The Phase-IV cumulate gabbronorites are even more enriched in LILE and LREE and show less depletion in HFSE and HREE in comparison to the earlier phases. The KUMA units formed from high-Al hydrous basaltic magmas, which were derived from partial melting of a previously subduction-metasomatized subcontinental-lithospheric mantle. These magmas underwent crystal fractionation and mineral concentration processes in small magma chamber(s) at shallow crustal levels (< 5 kbar).

4D cadastres: First analysis of legal, organizational, and technical impact-With a case study on utility networks

Döner, Fatih; Thompson, Rod; Stoter, Jantien; Lemmen, Christiaan; Ploeger, Hendrik; van Oosterom, Peter; Zlatanova, Sisi

The increasing complexity and flexibility of modern land use requires that cadastres need an improved capacity to manage the third dimension. As the world is per definition not static, there also will be needs in relation to the representation of the temporal (fourth) dimension either integrated with the spatial dimensions or as separate attribute(s). In this paper, registration of utility networks in cadastre are considered in this 3D. +. time (=4D) context. A number of countries in the world have developed methods to register utility networks complying with their legal, organizational, and technical structure. We researched the different approaches of three specific countries: Turkey, The Netherlands and Queensland, Australia. These are analysed to evaluate a solution that matches legal, organizational, and technical cadastral requirements in the most optimal way.

Relative contributions of crust and mantle to generation of Campanian high-K calc-alkaline I-type granitoids in a subduction setting, with special reference to the Harşit Pluton, Eastern Turkey

Karsli, Orhan; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Uysal, Ibrahim; Aydin, Faruk; Chen, Bin; Kandemir, Raif; Wijbrans, Jan

We present elemental and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic data for the magmatic suite (~79 Ma) of the Harşit pluton, from the Eastern Pontides (NE Turkey), with the aim of determining its magma source and geodynamic evolution. The pluton comprises granite, granodiorite, tonalite and minor diorite (SiO2 = 59.43-76.95 wt%), with only minor gabbroic diorite mafic microgranular enclaves in composition (SiO2 = 54.95-56.32 wt%), and exhibits low Mg# (<46). All samples show a high-K calc-alkaline differentiation trend and I-type features. The chondrite-normalized REE patterns are fractionated [(La/Yb)n = 2.40-12.44] and display weak Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.30-0.76). The rocks are characterized by enrichment of LILE and depletion of HFSE. The Harşit host rocks have weak concave-upward REE patterns, suggesting that amphibole and garnet played a significant role in their generation during magma segregation. The host rocks and their enclaves are isotopically indistinguishable. Sr-Nd isotopic data for all of the samples display ISr = 0.70676-0.70708, εNd(79 Ma) = -4.4 to -3.3, with TDM = 1.09-1.36 Ga. The lead isotopic ratios are (206Pb/204Pb) = 18.79-18.87, (207Pb/204Pb) = 15.59-15.61 and (208Pb/204Pb) = 38.71-38.83. These geochemical data rule out pure crustal-derived magma genesis in a post-collision extensional stage and suggest mixed-origin magma generation in a subduction setting. The melting that generated these high-K granitoidic rocks may have resulted from the upper Cretaceous subduction of the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan oceanic slab beneath the Eurasian block in the region. The back-arc extensional events would have caused melting of the enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle and formed mafic magma. The underplating of the lower crust by mafic magmas would have played a significant role in the generation of high-K magma. Thus, a thermal anomaly induced by underplated basic magma into a hot crust would have caused partial melting in the lower part of the crust. In this scenario, the lithospheric mantle-derived basaltic melt first mixed with granitic magma of crustal origin at depth. Then, the melts, which subsequently underwent a fractional crystallization and crustal assimilation processes, could ascend to shallower crustal levels to generate a variety of rock types ranging from diorite to granite. Sr-Nd isotope modeling shows that the generation of these magmas involved ~65-75% of the lower crustal-derived melt and ~25-35% of subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Further, geochemical data and the Ar-Ar plateau age on hornblende, combined with regional studies, imply that the Harşit pluton formed in a subduction setting and that the back-arc extensional period started by least ~79 Ma in the Eastern Pontides.

The economic analysis was performed and sustainability was evaluated for 7 leader Turkish marine hatcheries which have 61.5% of Turkish total marine fish fry production. For this purpose, the fixed cost including investment and operational costs including feed, labor, energy, fuel, water, oxygen, and medicament costs were determined by face to face interview for each hatchery. Also, production methods, species cultured and marketing techniques of each hatchery were investigated and conflicts, opportunities, projections, structuring and sustainability of the sector were evaluated by questionnaire designed in the scope of SUSTAINAQ, a FP6 Project supported by EU. As a result, it was seen that the ratio of total cost to total income changed between 22% and 97.8%. Although the RAS requires high operation and initial investment costs and highly qualified technicians, it is seen that it will be very important for sustainability of Turkish marine hatcheries because of land, quality and quantity of water and environmental approaches.
