Assessment of the effect of conventional and contemporary drying methods on the phenolic profile modulation and antioxidant retention of Trabzon persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.)

Koçak, Tevfik; Demirel Ozbek, Yagmur; Saral, Ozlem; Kocyigit, Emine

This study investigated the effects of conventional and modern drying methods on the total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and phenolic compound composition of Trabzon persimmons (Diospyros kaki L.) fruits harvested from the same tree and at comparable maturity stages were subjected to sun drying, shade drying, oven drying, air-fryer drying, and microwave drying techniques, with raw samples serving as the control group. The total phenolic content was assessed via the Folin–Ciocalteu method, and the antioxidant capacity was evaluated using the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and DPPH radical scavenging activity assays. The identification and quantification of phenolic compounds were conducted using the HPLC technique. The results indicated that the drying process produced statistically significant variations in the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of Trabzon persimmons. The microwave drying technique resulted in highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, whereas both sun and shade drying procedures showed higher values than raw samples. The total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of samples dried in an air fryer were found to be comparable to those of raw samples. The profile of phenolic compounds varied according to the drying process employed; certain compounds exhibited an increase with specific methods, while others were identified solely under particular conditions. Thus, it has been shown that drying techniques can have a significant impact on preserving and improving the functional properties of persimmons. Furthermore, we believe that microwave drying could be an effective alternative, particularly in terms of preserving bioactive compounds.

Effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation added to robotic rehabilitation in patients with ischemic stroke: a randomized clinical trial

Kızıl, Ömer Dicle; Ural, İbrahim Halil; Hatık, Sefa Haktan; Özden, Ali Veysel; Aydın, Emine Büşra

Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of adding transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) to robotic rehabilitation on functional outcomes and neuromuscular activity in patients with ischemic stroke. Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial employed a pre–post study design and was conducted in a hospital-based physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinic. A total of 40 patients with ischemic stroke, aged 18–65 years, were randomly assigned to either a robotic rehabilitation group (RRG) or a combined vagus nerve stimulation and robotic rehabilitation group (VRRG). Spasticity, walking speed, motor function, quality of life, muscle activity, and pain were assessed at baseline and after six weeks of treatment. Results: Primary outcome measures were walking speed, motor function assessed by the Fugl–Meyer Assessment, and pain intensity. Secondary outcomes included electrophysiological measurements (H-reflex and F-wave parameters) and quality of life. Within-group analyses showed significant improvements in all outcomes in the VRRG (p < 0.05), whereas all outcomes except pain improved significantly in the RRG (p < 0.05). Between-group comparisons demonstrated greater improvements in walking speed in the VRRG compared with the RRG (mean difference − 1.84 s, 95% CI − 3.7 to − 0.7; r = 0.43; p = 0.006) and greater pain reduction in the VRRG (mean difference − 1.55, 95% CI − 2.5 to − 0.1; r = 0.30; p = 0.048). In contrast, a greater reduction in the Hmax/Mmax amplitude ratio—an electrophysiological marker of spinal excitability—was observed in the RRG. Conclusion: The findings suggest that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation combined with robotic rehabilitation may provide additional benefits in terms of walking speed and pain reduction in patients with ischemic stroke. Trial registration: The study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov on April 19, 2024. (Identifier: NCT06381089).

Thermochemical Activation of Lightweight Slag–Perlite Alkali-Activated Slag (AAS): Overcoming Aggregate Brittleness and Sulfate Degradation

    Eker, Hasan; Demir Şahin, Demet

The successful realization of a circular economy in the cement industry, coupled with a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, relies on the development of sustainable alternative binder systems. This study investigated the physicomechanical performance and sulfate resistance of composites produced by alkali activation of natural perlite and blast furnace slag. The aim of the research was to improve mechanical properties under low- and medium-alkalinity conditions (5–10 M NaOH). The samples were cured at an ambient temperature of 20 °C and then treated with heat at 60 °C. These samples were then mechanically processed and subjected to five soak–dry cycles in 5% and 10% Na2SO4 solutions. The results showed that heat treatment resulted in the formation of a dense C-A-S-H gel, increasing compressive strength approximately eightfold, from 11.64 MPa to 92 MPa. However, perlite’s porous and brittle structure limits its flexural strength to 0.27 MPa; this value is insufficient for structural applications. Under severe sulfate attack (10% Na2SO4), samples cured at ambient temperature showed a 12% mass increase in the first cycle due to solution infiltration into capillary voids. As a consequence of extensive ettringite and gypsum formation, the specimens experienced severe deterioration, resulting in a complete loss of mechanical integrity and a residual compressive strength of 0 MPa. In contrast, heat-treated samples showed limited ion diffusion due to a denser matrix and an improved aggregate interface transition zone, resulting in a 2.6% mass increase and a residual compressive strength of 5.17 MPa. Consequently, the obtained findings indicate that thermally treated alkali-activated slag–perlite composites exhibit high resistance against sodium sulfate attack and may have potential for use in specific industrial environments with high sulfate concentrations. However, the performance of these materials under more complex aggressive conditions, such as mining environments involving magnesium sulfate exposure and acidic drainage waters, should be further validated through future studies.

Impact of cooking methods on PAH formation in traditional Akçaabat meatballs

Bostan, Sinan; Gül, Abdulkadir; Karpuz, Ömer; Baltaci, Cemalettin; Yılmaz, Fırat

Akçaabat meatballs, a traditional and commercially important Turkish meat product, are widely consumed and typically prepared using high-temperature cooking methods that may promote the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different cooking techniques, including pan cooking without added oil (dry pan cooking), electric grilling, oven baking, charcoal barbecue, and hazelnut shell charcoal barbecue, on PAH formation in Akçaabat meatballs. Samples obtained from eight different producers were analyzed for selected chemical properties and PAH contents using HPLC-FLD. While basic compositional characteristics varied among samples, the most significant differences were observed in PAH levels depending on the cooking method. The sum of four priority PAHs (∑PAH4) ranged between 7.70 and 112.38 µg/kg across all treatment s. Among the cooking methods, barbecue applications (charcoal and hazelnut shell charcoal) resulted in the highest PAH levels, frequently exceeding regulatory limits. In contrast, electric grilling produced the lowest PAH concentrations and showed the highest compliance with food safety standards. These findings demonstrate that cooking method plays a critical role in PAH formation and highlight the importance of selecting appropriate cooking techniques to minimize health risks. In this context, electric grilling can be considered a safer alternative, whereas traditional charcoal-based cooking methods may pose a significant risk in terms of PAH exposure.

Isolation and Preliminary In Vitro Characterization of a Honey-Derived Bacillus licheniformis Isolate

Usta, Mehtap; Zengin, Kübra; Kara, Yakup; Nalçacıoğlu, Remziye; Demirbağ, Zihni; Yıldız, Oktay; Kolaylı, Sevgi

Background/Objectives: Despite its hostile physicochemical environment characterized by high osmotic pressure, acidic pH, and low water activity, honey serves as a unique ecological niche for resilient microorganisms. This study aimed to recover bacterial isolates from honeys of different botanical origins and to characterize the probiotic-associated properties of a honey-derived Bacillus licheniformis isolate. Methods: A total of 20 bacterial isolates were recovered from four honey samples, including two blossoms and two honeydew honeys. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the recovered isolates had taxonomic assignments consistent with Bacillus licheniformis. Because 16S rRNA sequencing does not provide sufficient resolution to establish strain-level diversity or clonality, one isolate, designated Blhoney, was selected for subsequent molecular and functional characterization. Results: In vitro assays revealed that Blhoney exhibits robust tolerance to simulated gastrointestinal stress, including extreme acidity (pH 1–3), bile salts (0.3–1%), pepsin, and pancreatin, maintaining viability for up to 24 h. Phenotypic antimicrobial testing demonstrated measurable inhibition zones for erythromycin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, ampicillin, tetracycline, gentamicin, streptomycin, and spectinomycin, whereas no measurable inhibition zones were observed for penicillin G, rifampicin, ciprofloxacin, or ceftazidime. However, MIC determination and standardized breakpoint interpretation were not performed; therefore, these findings were interpreted solely as preliminary phenotypic inhibition-zone observations. Although the isolate did not display direct antagonistic activity against the tested bacterial pathogens under experimental conditions, its persistence under the tested gastrointestinal stress conditions supports further investigation of its probiotic-associated characteristics. Conclusions: Overall, these findings indicate that the honey-derived Blhoney isolate exhibits preliminary probiotic-associated characteristics under the tested in vitro conditions. However, further strain-level genomic and safety characterization is required before its potential probiotic application can be established.

Serum and hepatic lipid fractions and total protein status of laying hens supplemented with tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) under different stocking densities

Kaya, Hacer; Karaalp, Musa; Kaynar, Özgür; Elmastaş, Mahfuz

High stocking density can induce metabolic disturbances in laying hens, particularly in lipid metabolism. This study evaluated the effects of dietary tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) supplementation on serum and hepatic total protein and lipid parameters in laying hens reared under different stocking densities. A total of 192 50-week-old Lohmann Brown laying hens were assigned to a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement with two stocking densities, 5 or 7 hens per cage, and four dietary tarragon treatments providing 0, 1, 5, or 10 mmol/kg feed of tarragon-derived additional antioxidant activity for 8 weeks. Serum total protein concentration was not affected by stocking density but increased with tarragon supplementation, rising from 7.5 to 8.3 g/dL. Liver total protein concentration remained unchanged. SDS-PAGE analysis of pooled treatment-group samples identified 24 serum and 39 hepatic protein bands. High stocking density altered the serum lipid profile by increasing cholesteryl ester, free fatty acid, and acylglycerol proportions, as well as total cholesterol and triacylglycerol concentrations, while decreasing triacylglycerol and phospholipid proportions. Tarragon supplementation increased serum cholesteryl ester and phospholipid proportions and reduced serum triacylglycerol and free fatty acid proportions, together with lower total cholesterol and triacylglycerol concentrations. In the liver, high stocking density increased cholesteryl ester and free cholesterol proportions and triacylglycerol concentration, whereas it decreased triacylglycerol and phospholipid proportions and total cholesterol concentration. Tarragon supplementation increased hepatic cholesteryl ester, free cholesterol, and phospholipid proportions and reduced hepatic triacylglycerol proportion and concentration. Significant stocking density × tarragon-derived additional antioxidant activity interactions were observed for serum free fatty acid and hepatic free fatty acid and free cholesterol. Overall, stocking density had a stronger effect on lipid metabolism than on total protein status.

Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the VARK learning style inventory for athletes

Türker, Üstün; Somoğlu, Mustafa Barış; Koç, Mustafa; Bostancı, Özgür

Background: Understanding how athletes learn and recognizing their learning preferences are important cognitive and sensory components that may support effective instructional planning in sport settings. This study aimed to adapt the VARK Learning Style Inventory for Athletes (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic modalities) into Turkish and to evaluate its psychometric properties. Methods: A total of 854 licensed athletes from individual and team sports in Türkiye participated in the study. The Turkish version of the VARK Learning Style Inventory for Athletes was administered using a paper-based format. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics (v26) and LISREL (v8.80). Construct validity was examined using a Multitrait–Multimethod Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MTMM-CFA) approach with a correlated trait–correlated uniqueness (CTCU) specification, while reliability was assessed using internal consistency and test–retest procedures. Results: The MTMM-CFA supported the four-factor structure of the inventory, indicating an acceptable model fit and strong associations among the learning style dimensions, consistent with a multimodal learning preference profile. Internal consistency analyses yielded Kuder–Richardson 20 (KR-20) coefficients ranging from 0.574 to 0.623 across subscales, reflecting moderate reliability. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the Turkish version of the VARK Learning Style Inventory for Athletes demonstrates acceptable psychometric properties, with evidence of construct validity and moderate internal consistency. While the results support its use for assessing learning preferences among Turkish athletes, further research across different sport disciplines and age groups is recommended to strengthen there liability evidence and practical applicability. Overall, the study contributes to measurement practices in sport and exercise sciences by providing a culturally adapted instrument for examining athletes’ learning preferences.

The mediating effect of self-compassion and cognitive emotion regulation on the relationship between tolerance and social appearance anxiety in adolescents

Bingöl, Orhan; Çelebi, Gülin Yazıcı; Kaya, Feridun

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of tolerance on social appearance anxiety and to test the roles of emotion regulation and self-compassion as mediating psychological mechanisms in this relationship. The sample of the study consists of 647 adolescent individuals living in Turkey. The Personal Information Form, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Tolerance Scale, Self-Compassion Scale – Short Form, and Social Appearance Anxiety Scale were used in the study. Data were collected online using convenience sampling methods. Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the relationships between the variables in the study, while regression-based mediation analysis (Process macro model 81) was used to test the mediation model examined in the study. Upon examining the findings, tolerance was positively correlated with self-compassion (r =.323, p <.001) and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r =.200, p <.001); while tolerance was negatively and statistically significantly related to maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r = -.250, p <.001) and social appearance anxiety (r = -.229, p <.001). Additionally, a positive correlation was found between self-compassion and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r =.358, p <.001); and negative and statistically significant relationships between self-compassion and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r = -.576, p <.001) and social appearance anxiety (r = -.530, p <.001). Finally, a statistically significant negative relationship was found between social appearance anxiety and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r = -.219, p <.001); and a statistically significant positive relationship was found between social appearance anxiety and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r =.484, p <.001). The mediation analysis, tested with 10,000 bootstrap samples at a 95% confidence interval, revealed that emotion regulation dimensions and self-compassion have a full mediating effect. The findings indicate that the tolerance factor reduces social appearance anxiety not only directly but also indirectly through emotion regulation and self-compassion. In line with these findings, it was concluded that individuals with high tolerance levels need to be supported not only through mindfulness programs but also through emotion regulation and self-compassion levels.

Land Subsidence Susceptibility Mapping in Semi-Arid Regions Using PS-InSAR and Tree-Based Ensemble Machine Learning: A Case Study From Çumra, Türkiye

    Bilgilioğlu, Burhan Baha

Land subsidence is an increasing environmental hazard in semi-arid agricultural basins where intensive groundwater abstraction, compressible geological units, and expanding land-use pressures interact. This study presents a PS-InSAR and machine-learning-based framework for land subsidence susceptibility mapping in the Çumra District of the Konya Closed Basin, Türkiye. A time-series PS-InSAR analysis was conducted using 172 Sentinel-1A ascending images acquired between 2018 and 2023, and 11,718 high-confidence subsidence points were extracted as the inventory dataset. Fourteen conditioning factors representing topographic, hydrogeological, lithological, environmental, and anthropogenic controls were integrated with eight tree-based ensemble models optimized using Optuna. Random Forest achieved the highest overall performance, with an accuracy of 0.9745, precision of 0.9562, recall of 0.9945, F1 score of 0.9750, and Cohen's Kappa of 0.9490, followed by Extremely Randomized Trees and XGBoost. Class-specific validation also confirmed the reliability of Random Forest in delineating the Very High Susceptibility class. Variable importance analysis identified land use, proximity to settlements, well density, and groundwater level change as the dominant predictors, emphasizing the role of groundwater-related anthropogenic pressure in subsidence development. The resulting susceptibility maps provide a spatial decision-support basis for groundwater management, land use planning, and subsidence risk mitigation.

Critical Success Factors for Building Resilience in Circular Supply Chains of Electric Vehicle Batteries: Evidence from an Emerging Country

Erol, Ismail; Oztel, Ahmet; Peker, Iskender; Ar, Ilker Murat; Searcy, Cory

Given the global expansion of electric vehicles (EVs), decision makers in developing and emerging countries must address important challenges across EV battery supply chains (EVBSCs) toward circularity. For example, batteries usually make up about 40% of an EVs’ value, and the race to achieve net zero emissions will further underscore the critical need for vital minerals and metals, such as lithium, cobalt, and graphite, necessary to make batteries. Stakeholders routinely question the resilience of circular (C) EVBSCs worldwide, from mining valuable materials to manufacturing the batteries necessary to support the widespread deployment of EVs. Identifying and investigating critical success factors (CSFs) of any system is a necessary step in achieving its targets. Little research, however, has been performed to investigate the CSFs for building resilience in EVBSCs, particularly those focused on building a circular supply chain. The goal of this research is, therefore, to systematically scrutinize the CSFs of resilient C-EVBSCs in Türkiye. To this end, a decision framework applying inter-valued neutrosophic ISM-MICMAC is proposed. Based on expert opinions, an application of the decision framework finds that effective government policies, directives, and incentives and well-established dynamic capabilities, are key driving CSFs to building resilience in a C-EVBSC.

Influence of Container Type and Growing Media on Seedling Growth of Pinus sylvestris in the Nursery

    Tilki, Fahrettin; Er, Omer

Type of container and growing media are two important factors that affect seedling quality. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the growing media (local peat sources and Finnish peat) and Enso tube containers (type with vertical slits and rocket type) on the morphological attributes of two-year-old container-grown Pinus sylvestris L. seedlings using a completely randomised block experimental design in the nursery. Both container types and growing media significantly affected some seedling morphological attributes such as seedling height (SH), root collar diameter (RCD), the Dickson quality index (DQI), shoot and root dry weights (SDW and RDW, respectively), and sturdiness quotient (SQ) of P. sylvestris seedlings. When the containers were evaluated, the fixed Enso container type with greater volumes, which has vertical slits on the sidewalls, gave better results in terms of most measured seedling morphological characteristics than the Enso-rocket container type with smooth walls. It was also determined that the growing media significantly affected P. sylvestris seedlings’ morphological indices, and low growing media acidity because high local peat pH decreased some morphological quality attributes of P. sylvestris seedlings. The results suggest that lowering local peat pH can increase the potential of local peat as a Finnish peat substitute in container growing media for P. sylvestris seedling production.

Immediate effects of cervical spine and sacroiliac joint manipulations on the autonomic nervous system and pedobarographic analysis: Randomized controlled trial

Turgut, Hayriye; Büyükkırlı, İlker Can; Hatık, Sefa Haktan; Aydın, Emine Büşra

Background: This study aimed to investigate the immediate effects of cervical and sacroiliac joint manipulations on autonomic nervous system activity and baropodometric parameters. Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to three groups with equal gender distribution. The cervical manipulation group received chiropractic manipulation at the C3–C5 level, while the sacroiliac group received manipulation at the sacroiliac joint. The control group received no intervention. Pre- and post-treatment evaluations were conducted after a 30-minute interval. Plantar pressure was measured via a pedobarographic device. Autonomic nervous system activity was assessed using the Polar H10. Blood pressure and heart rate were manually recorded using a sphygmomanometer and pulse oximeter. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: No significant differences were found among groups in terms of age, gender, height, or BMI (Kruskal-Wallis, p > 0.05). The cervical manipulation group showed significant decreases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate post-intervention (Wilcoxon, p < 0.05). The sacroiliac group showed a significant increase in heart rate only (Wilcoxon, p < 0.05). No significant changes were observed in baropodometric parameters or autonomic activity within or between groups (Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis, p > 0.05). However, post-intervention comparisons showed cervical manipulation led to a greater reduction in systolic blood pressure, while sacroiliac manipulation led to a greater increase in heart rate compared to controls (Mann-Whitney U with Bonferroni correction, p < 0.05). Conclusion: While no significant changes were observed in baropodometric or autonomic parameters, chiropractic manipulation demonstrated short-term effects on blood pressure and heart rate. The accuracy of heart rate variability assessments should be reviewed, and further studies are needed to evaluate long-term cardiovascular and autonomic outcomes.

Microwave-assisted natural deep eutectic solvent-based system for sustainable eritadenine extraction from shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes)

Kaya, Murat; Berktas, Serap; Alasalvar, Hamza; Cam, Mustafa

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) mushrooms contain a significant level of eritadenine, a cholesterol-lowering compound. However, volatile organic solvents such as methanol are commonly used in the extraction of eritadenine. To overcome this disadvantage, in the present study, microwave-assisted natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) extraction was tested for the extraction of eritadenine. The efficiency of NADESs was compared with benchmark solvents (water, aqueous ethanol, aqueous methanol). NADES, composed of betaine and sorbitol, demonstrated superior efficiency in the extraction of eritadenine. Based on the results obtained from preliminary experiments, microwave-assisted extraction was optimized using a statistical optimization method. A microwave power of 300 W and an extraction time of 15 s were established as optimal conditions with an eritadenine content of 10.63 mg/g dry weight (DW). Further comparisons using NADES revealed the superiority of microwaves over homogenization and stirring methods. The highest level of eritadenine was measured with the microwave-assisted method (10.56 mg/g DW), followed by homogenization (7.22 mg/g DW) and stirring (1.03 mg/g DW). A similar trend was detected in the total phenolic content of the extracts (microwave: 8.27 mg GAE/g DW, homogenization: 2.32 mg GAE/g DW, and stirring: 0.46 mg GAE/g DW). The DPPH and ABTS antioxidant capacities of the extracts ranged from 1.18 to 29.40 mg TE/g DW and 2.42-34.69 mg TE/g DW, respectively. According to the sample preparation metric of sustainability tool, the microwave-assisted approach for the extraction of eritadenine was more sustainable due to the short extraction time. Overall, NADES combined with microwave technology represents an efficient approach for recovering eritadenine, enhancing extraction efficiency and sustainability from shiitake mushrooms.

Social Gender in a Language Without Grammatical Gender: Relational and Status Encoding in Kazakh Female Nominations

Gulzhan, Shokym; Bagila, Muratbek; Kürüm, Mesut; Zhanna, Tektigul; Nurbol, Saduakas; Nurdaulet, Aldashev; Zhanar, Amirgali

This article examines how Social Gender is organized in Kazakh in the absence of grammatical gender. The study is based on a lexicographically verified corpus of Kazakh female nominations, supplemented by a limited contrastive set of gender-neutral and male-linked kinship terms. The material includes basic female reference terms, kinship and affinal nominations, status-hierarchical designations, evaluative and address forms, socially conferred female roles, widowhood and step-relation terms, as well as analytic constructions marking age and social personhood. Methodologically, the analysis combines lexical-semantic, linguistic-anthropological, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic approaches within a framework that distinguishes Linguistic Gender, Natural Gender, and Social Gender. The results show that Kazakh female nominations form a structured lexico-pragmatic subsystem in which female reference intersects with relationality, hierarchy, evaluation, politeness, speaker dependence, and personhood-related distinctions. The analysis further demonstrates that this subsystem is not uniformly gender-differentiated: alongside female-specific nominations, Kazakh also employs selectively gender-neutral kinship terms and classificatory extensions, revealing where gender salience is strengthened, backgrounded, or redistributed. Social Gender in Kazakh is thus encoded not through grammatical agreement, but through a distributed system of relational, status-based, evaluative, politeness-based, speaker-dependent, and age/personhood-related nominations.

Approximate Analytical Solutions of the Time-Fractional Swift–Hohenberg Equation via Yang Transform Adomian Decomposition Method

    Ali, Mustafa Ahmed; Merdan, Mehmet

This study examines approximate analytical solutions of the time-fractional Swift–Hohenberg equation involving the Caputo–Fabrizio fractional derivative. The main objective of this study is to investigate efficient analytical approximation techniques using the Yang transform Adomian decomposition method (YTADM). The proposed approach combines the Yang transform with the Adomian decomposition technique to construct a rapidly convergent series solution for the fractional partial differential equation. The effects of the fractional order and system parameters on the behavior of the solution have been examined via tables and are graphically represented. The results confirm that the proposed method provides accurate and computationally efficient approximate solutions to the fractional Swift–Hohenberg equation. These results show that YTADM is an appropriate and useful analytical tool to solve nonlinear fractional partial differential equations arising in mathematical physics, especially those equations involving nonsingular fractional operators. The principal contribution of this work effort is the development and application of the YTADM framework for solving the fractional Swift–Hohenberg equation; therefore, it serves as a reliable analytic tool for nonlinear fractional partial differential equations arising in mathematical physics.

Prioritization of Internal and External Corporate Sustainability Dimensions: Evidence from Sustainability Auditors Using AHP

Wang, Yufu; Yeşilçelebi, Gül; Tosunoğlu Kusan, Büşra; Çam, Alper Veli; Dumitru, Mihaela

Corporate sustainability has traditionally been evaluated through environmental, social, and economic dimensions. However, increasing sustainability challenges, stakeholder expectations, and regulatory requirements indicate that sustainability extends beyond conventional performance measures and requires an integrated perspective that considers both internal organizational capabilities and external institutional conditions. This study develops an integrated internal–external sustainability framework and prioritizes sustainability dimensions from the perspective of licensed sustainability auditors in Türkiye. The proposed framework comprises governance, ethical, behavioral, cultural, environmental, social, economic, legal, and technological dimensions. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was applied to pairwise comparison data collected from 15 licensed sustainability auditors to determine the relative importance of these dimensions. The results indicate that external sustainability dimensions received substantially higher priority (70.97%) than internal dimensions (29.03%), demonstrating that sustainability assessments are primarily shaped by environmental challenges, regulatory requirements, stakeholder expectations, technological developments, and market conditions. Among the nine corporate sustainability dimensions, environmental sustainability received the highest overall priority, followed by technological, ethical, social, economic, legal, governance, cultural, and behavioral dimensions. These findings suggest that although internal organizational capabilities remain important, corporate sustainability is predominantly influenced by external institutional and environmental factors. By proposing an integrated internal–external sustainability framework, this study extends conventional sustainability assessment approaches and contributes to the sustainability governance and assurance literature. The findings also provide practical implications for sustainability reporting, assurance, governance, and strategic decision-making by identifying the sustainability dimensions that deserve the greatest managerial and regulatory attention.

Predicting suicide probability in young adults: contributions of vulnerable narcissism, grudge, and demographic variables

    Çelebi, Gülin Yazıcı

Suicide is a significant public health problem worldwide. The aim of this study is to examine the potential effects of levels of vulnerable narcissism and grudge on the likelihood of suicide. In addition to these variables, the potential effects of some demographic variables (gender, marital status, age, socioeconomic status, education level, perceived religiosity, number of siblings) were also investigated. A convenience sampling method was used to determine the study group. The study group consisted of a total of 500 individuals; 368 (73.6%) were women and 132 (26.4%) were men. The mean age of women was 26.31 (SD = 9.60, min-max = 18–64), the mean age of men was 29.01 (SD = 10.76, min-max = 18–55), and the mean age of the entire sample was 26.84 (SD = 9.88, min-max = 18–64). The Suicide Probability Scale, Vulnerable Narcissism Scale, Grudge Scale, and Personal Information Form were used as data collection tools in the study. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationships between variables in the analysis of the data. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the extent to which vulnerable narcissism, grudge, and sociodemographic characteristics are associated with suicide probability. The regression model showed that the independent variables significantly predicted the probability of suicide. According to the results obtained, the independent variables explained 38% of the variation in the probability of suicide {[R = 0.619, R2 = 0.383, F(8, 499)= 38.12, p < 0.0001]}, and vulnerable narcissism and grudge are positive predictors of the probability of suicide. Vulnerable narcissism (β = 0.34, p < 0.001) and grudge (β = 0.22, p < 0.001) are positive predictors of the probability of suicide. Age (β = −0.23, p < 0.001), education level (β = −0.08, p = 0.003), and SEL (β = −0.19, p < 0.001) are significant variables that negatively predict the probability of suicide. Based on the results, it can be said individuals with high levels of narcissism and grudge have a higher probability of suicide, and that some socio-demographic characteristics may influence these relationships. The findings are discussed in light of the literature.

Machine learning–enabled ECG arrhythmia classification: a systematic and educational study from signal processing to decision support

    Melek, Negin

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals play a critical role in the early detection of cardiac arrhythmias, which remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While deep learning approaches have achieved high classification accuracy, their increasing complexity often limits interpretability and practical applicability. This study presents a systematic and interpretable framework for multi-class ECG arrhythmia classification, examining the effects of signal processing, feature extraction, feature selection, and evaluation strategies on classification performance. Experiments were conducted on the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database using two feature representations: (i) morphological and temporal features, and (ii) a compact wavelet-based representation. Sequential Forward Feature Selection (SFFS) revealed that classification performance saturates at approximately 15 features, indicating that most discriminative information is captured within a compact subset. Using this feature space, the support vector machine (SVM) achieved the best overall performance, reaching 98.54% accuracy with stable results across different configurations. The wavelet-based representation further improved performance balance, yielding lower Golden Distance (GD) values (as low as 0.0249), indicating more consistent behavior across evaluation metrics. Overall, the results demonstrate that carefully designed feature extraction and selection enable classical machine learning methods, particularly SVM, to achieve high and reliable performance, providing an interpretable alternative to more complex black-box models in ECG arrhythmia classification.

Artificial-intelligence–based developmental screening for pre-school children (ages 3–6): a scoping review of deployed tools, clinical validity, equity, and implementation in guidance-center settings

    Arslan, Adem; Gül, Fatih

Background – Early identification of neurodevelopmental conditions during the pre-school years (ages 3–6) is critical for timely intervention, yet traditional questionnaire-based screeners suffer from low positive predictive value, late detection, and inequitable access. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning (ML) methods promise more objective, scalable identification, and two devices (Cognoa Canvas Dx, 2021; EarliPoint Evaluation, 2023) are already US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-authorized. Recent reviews summarize the technical literature, but few address how deployed tools perform on clinical validity, equity, and real-world implementation, particularly outside high-income, English-speaking settings. Methods – Following Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR), we searched seven databases (1 January 2020–15 June 2026) and charted primary validation studies of AI/ML developmental-screening tools for children aged 72 months or younger. We mapped tools by modality, diagnostic performance, regulatory status, geographic origin, and, as a structured analytic axis, demographic subgroup (equity) reporting and deployment readiness. Results – Sixteen primary AI-tool studies met inclusion, spanning eight modality classes (eye-tracking, multimodal questionnaire-plus-video, computer-vision home/clinical video, tablet/smartphone digital phenotyping, voice/acoustic ML, electronic-health-record risk prediction, questionnaire-based ML, and wearable sensors) and eight countries (USA, South Korea, Australia, Switzerland, France, Israel, China, Vietnam). Reported sensitivities ranged from approximately 75 to 99.2% and specificities from 78.9 to 95.5%. Only one tool demonstrated stable performance across sex, race, and ethnicity; subgroup-stratified validation was otherwise near-absent. No CE-marked autism-specific screening device was identified. Conclusions – The evidence base has broadened in modality and geography but remains autism-concentrated and equity-blind, with a wide gap between analytic accuracy and primary-care deployment. We propose equity validation, deployment-readiness reporting, and an implementation pathway for low-resource guidance-center settings as priorities.

This study analyzed the physicochemical characteristics, mineral composition, and antioxidant potential of fifteen floral honey samples collected from five districts of Gümüşhane, Türkiye. The average values for moisture (17.44 g/100 g), insoluble solids (0.04 g/100 g), conductivity (0.35 mS/cm), diastase activity (54.15 DN), free acidity (38.18 meq/kg), and fructose + glucose content (68.95 g/100 g) were mostly within the acceptable limits defined by national honey standards. Proline content ranged from 562.66 to 1466.15 mg/kg, while hydroxymethylfurfural (0.37–18.89 mg/kg) confirmed the freshness of all samples. Potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium were identified as the major mineral elements in the analyzed honey samples, with considerable variation observed among samples collected from different districts. Antioxidant activity (Total phenolic content (mg GAE/100 g): 9.21–98.25; SC₅₀ (mg/mL): 5.23–41.29) revealed a strong antioxidant potential of Gümüşhane honeys. This work provides the first detailed characterization of Gümüşhane honeys, confirming their high physicochemical quality, rich mineral profile, and notable antioxidant potential, and underscores their value as a distinctive regional product with functional and commercial significance.
