Reconsideration of Orhon Inscriptions in the context of Cultural Memory of Turkish Society: The Body and Memory of Stone

    Demir, Sertac Timur

This paper aims to deal with the Orhon Inscriptions among the concepts and debates on cultural memory for the purpose of 'remembering', 'adaptation', 'updating' and 'refunctionalising' through the television documentary Time Traveller: Following the Steps of the Turks. What do the inscriptions tell us about today? What does deducing, analysing and developing a methodology for this provide to the national heritage under the titles of past, identity, belonging and memory? In this article, accordingly, cultural memory questions and suggestions are offered through the Orhon Inscriptions. Documents and documentaries, without doubt, are instruments of interpreting the past and projecting the future. This research is conceptual as well as methodological. In this respect, a minimal cultural memory glossary is fictionalised and thus a sort of conceptual ground is generated.

Reflections of the Terrorist Attacks in 2016 on Humor Magazines

    Türten, Elif

Cartoon and politics have been in close relationship throughout the history of the press. Political structure of the period, social events that developed due to the political or political events that took place at that time and political actors are reflected on the caricatures and humor magazines. In our country, the year 2016 was very intense in terms of agenda. 27 terrorist attacks took place throughout 2016. During these attacks, hundreds of people lost their lives and thousands were injured. In the study, it was investigated how the terrorist incidents in 2016, which the country experienced in a state of mourning, were handled in the humor magazines, how much space was provided and how the terrorist incidents were evaluated. In this regard, the research question is set as how the political trends and ideological structures of the humor magazines that are the subject of study are reflected in the cartoons. In this context, cover pages of Penguin, Girgir and Uykusuz Magazines were used as a method of critical discourse analysis by Teun van Dijk. These magazines were selected because they constitute important examples of political cartoons and have a large reader base in Turkey. As a result of the examination, 8 cover pages were drawn in Penguen Magazine, 6 in Girgir Magazine and 7 in Uykusuz Magazine. A total of 21 cover pages were examined in the study. The Penguen Magazine approached at people who were exposed to terrorist incidents. Girgir Magazine criticized the events. Effect of Ambient Conditions on Monthly Performances of Three Different PV Arrays

Özden, Talat; Akinoglu, Bulent G.; Turan, Rasit; Martinez, V; Gonzalez, J

Solar PV cells may be mainly divided into two parts as crystalline and thin film. Mono-crystalline silicon (e.g. Mono-Si) and microcrystalline based amorphous silicon and other thin films (e.g. gc-Si/a-Si and CdTe thin films) are widely used PV cells in the arrays. The outdoor performances of these systems depend on some climatic parameters and conditions, and it is important to understand how the monthly efficiencies vary with these parameters. In the present study, the data obtained from three grid connected PV arrays of Mono Si, a-Si/p.c-Si and CdTe thin film that were operated for 41 months in Ankara-Turkey is analyzed. The results showed that Mono-Si an-ay performance depends on the 5 parameters of outdoor climatic conditions while a-Si/gc-Si and CdTe thin film arrays performances arc not significantly affected by the variation of the climatic parameters. The possible reasons are discussed in details.

Bingöl, Dursun; Filizöz, Berrin; Koparan, Emrah; Okan, Tarhan; Çapkulaç, Onur; Ozsahin, M

Growing importance of notions of productivity and efficiency which generates basic focus and domain of firms the attention for strategic management have been increasing. This increasing attention is also resulting in increasing competition and changes in its formation. Markets have switched into regional or international rather than local and national. Firms need to have a strategic point of view and use strategic management tools. The above-mentioned concepts are generally used in big firms. However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) have an important role in countries' economies thanks to their contribution to social development and employment. In Turkey, 99% of firms are SME. Regarding the importance of SMEs in the country's economy, this study aims to reveal if owners/managers of SMEs know about strategic management tools, if they know which tools they use, levels of satisfaction with these tools and which tools they plan to use in the future. Additionally, the study seeks priorities of owners/managers when choosing a strategic management tool and effect of level of using these tools on firm performance. Regionalisation of discharges having certain exceedance probabilities and Eastern Black Sea Basin sample

    Saka, Fatih; Yüksek, Omer

In many of water engineering studies, it is necessary to determine the amount of water or the probability of discharge at a certain value. However, current discharge measurements are limited and located in discharge gauging stations (DGS). Flow duration curves (FDC) belonging to each DGS can be obtained, but it is necessary to estimate discharge values of the areas having no or insufficient discharge data. For this purpose, studies based on the regionalization of discharge values can be applied. In this study, discharge values of 39 DGS located on Eastern Black Sea Basin in Turkey, and temperature and precipitation of weather stations in the region have been obtained. Drainage areas have been determined. Total annual precipitation and temperature values of DGS have been obtained by using Thiessen method. Values having 20%, 30%, 50%, and 90% exceedance probabilities of annual FDC, have also been correlated with basin characteristics using 10-year average daily discharges. Drainage area, drainage density and mean slope of tributary values were chosen as topographic; and mean annual precipitation height and annual temperature values chosen as climatic parameters. As a result, in the ungauged areas, 20%, 30%, 50%, and 90% exceedance probabilities of annual FDC have been estimated by some basin properties and the results were examined.

Experimental investigation of the effect of ferromagnetic particles addition on mechanical properties of magneto-rheological materials

    Mazlum, Ugur; Gümrük, Recep

The ferromagnetic particle, are used in many areas due to their magnetic field sensitivity. Composite MRE materials which obtained from the combination of the matrix material with these particles are classified as a kind of smart materials. In this study, it is aimed that the compressive mechanical properties of MRE materials produced by adding four different magnetic particles in RTV (room temperature vulcanizing) silicone elastomer are investigated. As a matrix material Vario 40 silicone rubber were used, which is common in engineering application. The particle rate inside MRE materials was kept at 30% by volume. In addition, to investigate the influence of orientation of particles inside MRE materials, some samples were subjected to external magnetic field during production. These samples are named as anisotropic MRE materials while the others are described as isotropic ones. The tests showed that anisotropic samples have much more strength values according to isotropic samples. Of all, the MRE samples including BASF CN particles reveal the biggest strength values. Also, the samples were evaluated in terms of MR effect and the largest MR effect with an increase value of 201% was found for anisotropic samples including SQ-I particles with regard to the corresponding isotropic one. As a result, this study determined that the mechanical and MR properties of MRE materials seriously depend on ferromagnetic particle kind and its magnetic characteristic.

Adanur, Hakan; Fidan, Muhammed Said; Yaşar, Şekip Şadiye

Impregnation, drying, and varnishing are performed to increase the usage life of wood material by making it resistant to chemical, physical, and biological agents. The most common wood protection procedures are chemical methods. Therefore, it is essential to develop new impregnation substances that do not harm the environment and human health but are still economically efficient. In this study, oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) was impregnated with borax and boric acid in 1%, 3%, and 5% aqueous solutions. Quechua (Caesalpinia spinosa) was also used as a natural impregnation substance. The retention amount of the impregnated samples was examined for the oven-dried density, bending strength, elastic modulus, screw holding strength tests, compression strength parallel to the grain, and Bending strength parallel to the grain. The samples impregnated with borax had higher oven-dried density, bending strength, elasticity modulus in bending, and Bending strength parallel to the grain tests than samples treated with boric acid; however, the screw holding strength tests showed the opposite trend. The screw holding strength was higher in the impregnated samples than in controls. The bending strength, the elasticity modulus in bending, and the Bending strength parallel to the grain were lower in the control samples.

Pasting properties of buckwheat, rice and maize flours and textural properties of their gels: Effect of ascorbic acid concentration

    Yildiz, Ö.; Toker, O.S.; Yüksel, F.; Cavus, M.; Ceylan, M.M.; Yurt, B.

In the present study, the effect of ascorbic acid addition on the pasting properties of several gluten-free flours, namely buckwheat, maize and rice flours, and textural properties of their gels were also investigated. Pasting curves of control flour and 10 mg/kg ascorbic acid-including flour were found to be very similar to each other. However, higher levels of ascorbic acid significantly influenced the magnitude of all pasting parameters such as peak viscosity, trough viscosity, breakdown viscosity, final viscosity, setback viscosity, peak time and pasting temperature. Regarding textural properties specifying machinability of the doughs, ascorbic acid addition also generally influenced textural characteristics such as hardness, adhesiveness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, chewiness and resilience parameters of the samples. According to the results, the ascorbic acid level to be used with the gluten-free flour should be adjusted carefully with regard to pasting and textural parameters. Ascorbic acid addition level directly affected the quality of the end products, determining consumer preference.
