Kostas, Kahraman; Yasa Kostas, Rabia; Just, Mike; Lones, Michael A.
With the proliferation of devices on the Internet of Things (IoT), ensuring their security has become paramount. Device identification (DI), which distinguishes IoT devices based on their traffic patterns, plays a crucial role in both differentiating devices and identifying vulnerable ones, closing a serious security gap. However, existing approaches to DI that build machine learning models often overlook the challenge of model generalizability across diverse network environments. In this study, we propose a novel framework to address this limitation and to evaluate the generalizability of DI models across data sets collected within different network environments. Our approach involves a two-step process: first, we develop a feature and model selection method that is more robust to generalization issues by using a genetic algorithm with external feedback and datasets from distinct environments to refine the selections. Second, the resulting DI models are then tested on further independent datasets to robustly assess their generalizability. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by empirically comparing it to alternatives, highlighting how fundamental limitations of commonly employed techniques such as sliding window and flow statistics limit their generalizability. Moreover, we show that statistical methods, widely used in the literature, are unreliable for device identification due to their dependence on network-specific characteristics rather than device-intrinsic properties, challenging the validity of a significant portion of existing research. Our findings advance research in IoT security and device identification, offering insight into improving model effectiveness and mitigating risks in IoT networks.

Doğan, Gökcen; Tokaç Er, Nida; Öztürk, Meryem Elif; Meriç, Çağdaş Salih; Yilmaz, Hacı Ömer; Yabanci Ayhan, Nurcan
Aim: The aims of this study were to evaluate hand grip strength in young adults, to examine its relationship with anthropometric values, and to determine which values are predictive. Subject and methods: This prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted with 913 healthy young adults aged 18–30 years. A questionnaire form was administered in face-to-face interviews, and anthropometric measurements including height, body weight, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), mid-upper arm circumference (MAC), neck circumference (NC), triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), and hand grip strength (kg) were performed for each participant. Results: Hand grip strength was significantly higher for men than for women (p < 0.001), and was also higher in obese and overweight people compared to underweight participants (p < 0.001). Hand grip strength was correlated with weight, height, body mass index, MAC, TSF, WC, and NC (p < 0.001). The predictive ability of anthropometric measurements in estimating hand grip strength was thus demonstrated in a large population of healthy young adults. Significant regression was found, with an R2 value of 0.556. Hand grip strength increased by 0.282 kg for each centimeter of height and by 0.135 kg for each centimeter of MAC. The hand grip strength of male participants was 0.424 kg greater than that of females. Height, MAC, TSF, and sex were significant predictors of hand grip strength. Conclusion: According to our results, variability in hand grip strength among healthy subjects can be explained by height, MAC, TSF, WC, HC, age, and sex. The estimation of hand grip strength could be established based on these demographic and anthropometric variables.

- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Statistical and seismotectonic analyses of the Marmara region under existing stress regime in the west of the NAFZ
Alkan, Hamdi; Öztürk, Serkan; Bektaş, Özcan; Büyüksaraç, Aydın
The Marmara Region is an active tectonic region in northwestern Türkiye, which comprises some important strike-slip active fault mechanisms and important tectonic units, located near the western part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone. In the historical and instrumental period, the Marmara Region experienced large/devastating earthquakes. Considering this continuous activity, in this study, we investigate the tectonic structure and performed future seismic hazard estimation of the region based on some seismotectonic parameters. For this evaluation, we plot the Coulomb stress change maps of 1912 Mürefte-Şarköy, 1953 Yenice-Gönen and 1999 İzmit mainshocks with the earthquakes (MW ≥ 4.5) that occurred in the study region after 2003. For the estimation of b-value, occurrence probabilities and return periods of earthquakes, we used a homogenous local seismicity catalogue consisting of 119.029 events for the period between 1912 and 2023. In the findings of this study, the lower b-values and increasing Coulomb stress changes which are trigger stress failure compatible are observed in the west and northwest of the Marmara Sea. In contrast, the higher/moderate b-values and decreasing Coulomb stress values are observed in the east and southeast of the Marmara Sea. The results of probability assessments show that an earthquake with Mw = 6.5 may occur with a probability of 98% in the west of the Marmara Sea after 2025. As a remarkable fact, a comprehensive assessment of these types of variables will supply important findings for earthquake hazard and potential in the study region.

- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2025Assessing the reliability of the lightweight deflectometer test for compaction control in highway subbase layers through SPSS analysis
Seferoğlu, Mehmet Tevfik; Seferoğlu, Ayşegül Güneş; Akpınar, Muhammet Vefa; Iribagiza, Divine
The condition of the highway base/subbase layers is critical for the durability and performance of the road pavement. Compaction control plays an important role in determining the ability of these layers to support traffic loads, their strength and stability. Various methods are used to evaluate the compaction rate of subbase layers; such as nuclear density gauge (NDG) and sand cone. These methods also have their own limitations and difficulties. While the NDG test is used to determine the compaction percentages, the lightweight deflectometer (LWD) test is used as a relatively more practical, portable and non-destructive method to measure the surface stiffness modulus (Emod). In this study, the possibility of using the surface stiffness modulus obtained by the LWD test in the subbase layer instead of each other is investigated by establishing a correlation between the compaction percentages determined by the NDG test. To investigate how well the LWD results are in line with established methods, only correlation and regression analysis of SPSS software are focused on. Correlation analysis helped us assess the strength and direction of the relationships between LWD modulus values and compaction percentages, while regression analysis provided insights into the predictive capability of LWD in estimating compaction outcomes. These methods helped evaluate the reliability and accuracy of LWD as a compaction control tool, providing a deeper understanding of the role of LWD in highway subbase layer assessment.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Origin and tectonic setting of the carbonate-hosted Kopuz Fe skarn Deposit, Sakarya Zone, NE Türkiye
Sipahi, Ferkan; Akpınar, İbrahim; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Vural, Alaaddin; Saydam Eker, Çiğdem
The Kopuz Fe skarn deposit in the eastern Sakarya Zone is genetically associated with the 44–45 Ma Kopuz granitoid. The Fe ores are hosted within the contact zone between this granitoid and Jurassic Lower Cretaceous limestone. The deposit is characterized by both endo- and exoskarn zones, which exhibit a diverse range of minerals including clinopyroxene, plagioclase, amphibole, biotite, garnet, epidote, phlogopite, magnetite, hematite, pyrite, quartz, calcite, actinolite, limonite, and goethite. Magnetite and hematite, accompanied by small amounts of pyrite, are primarily ore minerals. Pyroxene types observed in the mineralization include diopsidic hedenbergite in the endoskarn zone and diopside in the exoskarn zone. Plagioclase in the endoskarn zone vary from oligoclase to Labrador in composition, which transition towards Na-rich plagioclase and orthoclase in the ore-bearing exoskarn zone. Amphiboles, primarily calcic in nature, are classified as Mg-hornblende and actinolite, with low F and Cl contents, indicating minimal F enrichment during Fe-skarn formation. Garnet is characterized by andradite in the exoskarn zone close to the endoskarn and grossular-andradite in the distal exoskarn zone. The increase of Ad/Gr ratios in zoned garnet indicate an increasing ƒO2 value outward from it. Considering that rare pyrite occur together with magnetite and hematite, we suggest that the deposit formed under conditions of low ƒS2 and high ƒO2 conditions. The homogenization temperature and salinity of the fluid inclusions in quartz from the exoskarn zone vary from 224 °C to 349 °C and 4.18 % (wt% NaCl equiv.), respectively. The oxygen isotope composition (5.10 ‰ to 7.86 ‰) of the fluids in equilibrium with magnetite and quartz minerals in the exoskarn zone supports a magmatic fluid origin. The oxygen isotopic signatures of epidote and amphibole further indicate a minor interaction with an additional source, likely meteoric waters. The sulfur isotope composition of pyrite (2.3 ‰) is consistent with a magmatic sulfur source. In summary, the middle Eocene-aged Kopuz Fe skarn deposit occurred a shallow depth within a magmatic arc, where oxidized conditions predominated.

This study was conducted to comprehensively investigate the effect of mechanical milling parameters on the properties of electrolytic pure copper powders and hot pressed billets fabricated from recycled copper wastes. Three different milling speeds, five different milling times and three different ball to powder weight ratios were used to fully reveal the effect of the mechanical milling process on the properties of recovered Cu powders. The results show that as the milling time and milling speed increased, the initial dendritic morphology of the copper was transformed into a flake-like structure. At 400 rpm and a 5:1 BPR parameters, the average particle sizes of C3, C4, and C5 after 2, 4, and 8h were ∼52 μm, 83 μm, and 71 μm, respectively. This suggests that particle size initially increases due to shape change and cold-welding, but at longer durations, fracture becomes dominant. The I5 with d(0.5) = 69.32 μm exhibited a high flow rate of 5.88 g/s with an apparent density of 2.9 g/cm3.While the hardness value of the Cu samples (A1-bulk sample) produced by exposure to the lowest deformation during the mechanical milling is 95.02 HB, the hardness value of the Cu specimens (F5-bulk sample) showing the highest apparent density, best flow rate and highest density values is 109.31 HB. The electrical conductivity values were determined to be approximately 52.2 MS/m, 57.4 MS/m and 44.3 MS/m for A1-bulk, F5-bulk and H5-bulk, respectively. This study offers valuable insights into the relationship between milling parameters, powder characteristics, and final material properties.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Optimal design of inerter-assisted series tuned mass dampers for seismic vibration control of multi-story buildings
Araz, Onur
This work introduces a framework for the optimal design of inerter-assisted series tuned mass dampers (STMDI) placed at the top story of a multi-story building under ground motion and performs comparative research to assess its effectiveness against conventional TMDI. The identical inertance ratio and total mass ratio are taken into consideration for the optimization of both control systems. In the frequency-domain analysis, the five design variables of the STMDI are optimized based on the minimization of the peak amplitude of the displacement transfer function at the top story of the building using the genetic algorithm (GA). The optimized variables are damping ratios (ξ1and ξ2), tuning frequency ratios (f1and f2), and mass ratio of the first to second TMD mass (µh). The proposed control system is applied to a 4-story, an 8-story, and a 16-story case-studies, and the optimal parameters are verified using eighty-five historical benchmark earthquakes in time domain analysis. These records are divided into three different groups according to their frequency content, i.e. PGA/PGV ratio: high, intermediate, and low. The results demonstrate that the STMDI performs better than the TMDI at the same mass and inertance ratio, especially at excitation frequencies close to resonance. The most important advantage of STMDI compared to TMDI is that it provides this performance in a wider frequency range and in an almost similar way. Finally, the seismic performances of STMDI and TMDI are compared considering ground motions with different frequency content.

Aktürk, Betül Kara; Arslan Burnaz, Nesibe
The genus Robinia, which belongs to the Fabaceae family, is a source of polyphenols and may be medicinally and pharmacologically effective against life-threatening diseases. This study investigated and compared the phenolic profiles, mineral contents, and antioxidant activities of two Robinia species. The antioxidant activities and phenolic/flavonoid contents of aerial parts of Robinia pseudoacacia and Robinia × ambigua plants at various solvents and concentrations were investigated in detail for the first time. The findings revealed that 50% acetone leaf extracts are promising sources of high phenol/flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity. Liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–ESI–MS/MS) analysis allowed the identification of nine flavonoids and seven phenolic acids. Pelargonidin chloride, a common anthocyanidin with estrogenic activity, was the major component in all samples. Moreover, inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) shows that all samples were rich in K (12 886.70–26 078.11 mg/kg), Ca (1550.51–6011.03 mg/kg), and Mg (1676.13–3115.10 mg/kg). Leaves stand out compared to flowers. It is considered that the results obtained may guide studies in the fields of medicine, cosmetics, pharmacology, and so forth.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2A Comprehensive Assessment for the Aftershock Sequence of August 11, 2012 Varzaghan-Ahar Doublet Mainshocks, NW Iran
Öztürk, Serkan; Yaghmaei-Sabegh, Saman
In this study, an evaluation of regional, temporal and magnitude properties of the August 11, 2012 Varzaghan-Ahar aftershock sequence was performed based on the different variables such as the Gutenberg-Richter b-value, the Modified Omori p-value, fractal dimension Dc-value and the maximum aftershock magnitude Mamax value which commonly used to describe aftershock behaviors. b-value was computed as 0.73 ± 0.03 for the study area where catalog has a completeness magnitude Mc = 2.0. This b-value is relatively small from typical b≈1 and it can be due to the abundance of aftershocks larger than Mw = 4 in the region. Structural heterogeneity of the seismic source along with the compressive stress situation of the aftershock area could be another reason for this finding as well. p-value was estimated as 1.00 ± 0.03 where c-value took 0.342 ± 0.106 according to the analysis which shows that the number of aftershocks of the Varzaghan-Ahar mainshock shows a relatively fast decrease. Dc-value was computed as 1.84 ± 0.07. This large value indicates homogeneously distributed aftershocks and more clustering in smaller areas or larger scales. As a result, the smallest b-values (< 0.7) and Mamax values larger than 5.0 were obtained around the mainshock. In addition, the biggest p-values (> 1.2) were found in and around the mainshock including Varzaghan. The areas having the biggest p-value and the lowest b-value have great coseismic deformation and stress, respectively. Hence, we can say that coseismic deformation and stress distributions are very effective on the b- and p-value changes. Thus, particular attention on assessing the aftershock hazard may be directed on the understanding of these spatio-temporal aftershock variables.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2A comparative study of cognitive function and reaction time in obese and non-obese adults
Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Şahin, Kezban; Ayvaz, Hilal
Objective: Obesity may negatively affect the physical health and cognitive functions of individuals and delay their reaction time to stimuli. However, the association among obesity, cognitive functions, and reaction times is yet to be fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of obesity on cognitive functions and visual and auditory reaction times in adults. Methods: Data of 100 participants (50 obese and 50 normal) were analyzed in the study. Anthropometric parameters and 24-h dietary recall data were recorded. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to evaluate the cognitive functions, Simple Reaction Time Task (SRTT)-Visual and SRTT-Auditory were used to assess visual and auditory reaction times of the participants, respectively. Results: The mean MoCA score of the obese was significantly lower than normal (17.46 and 25.22, respectively; p < 0.001). In addition, the mean auditory (p < 0.001) and visual (p < 0.05) reaction times of obese were significantly longer than normal. Similarly, this condition was also observed for the fastest and lowest values of auditory and visual reaction times. Additionally, obesity caused a decrease in the MoCA score (β = -0.762; p < 0.001) and delayed visual (β = 0.423; p < 0.001) and auditory (β = 0.590; p < 0.001) reactions. The negative effect of obesity was maintained after controlling for potential factors (MoCA, β = -0.594; p < 0.001; SRTT-Auditory, β = 0.409; p < 0.01; SRTT-Visual, β = 0.330; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Obese participants showed worse cognitive, auditory and visual performance. Additional research will be necessary in the future to shed light on the fundamental mechanisms involved.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2025Sentiment analysis of twitter data for US airlines' finance
Cam, Handan; Demirel, Ugur
The airline industry significantly promotes cultural, social, and financial globalization by facilitating connections between nations and individuals. Airline finance encompasses the intricate aspects of managing the economic, operational, and strategic elements of airline corporations on a global scale. In this industry, it is necessary to address various factors, including revenue management, risk management, cost control, and market competition. The interaction of these factors in the global aviation sector influences the financial situation of airlines, requiring strategic planning, flexibility, and a complete understanding of market dynamics. Sentiment analysis in aviation finance uses text and data mining techniques to examine emotional elements derived from social networks, consumer feedback, and news. This facilitates understanding consumer preferences, new trends, investment opportunities, risks, and marketing strategies. Sentiment analysis also helps manage brand reputation by monitoring sentiments expressed by passengers and the general public, allowing proactive measures to maintain a positive reputation. Airline companies rely on conventional customer feedback forms, which can be extremely laborious and timeconsuming. Twitter data is valuable for collecting consumer feedback tweets and conducting sentiment analysis. In this paper, we work on a dataset comprising tweets from the top major US airlines and perform a sentiment analysis in airline finance that can be used more efficiently and effectively in decision-making processes. This would allow airlines to adopt a more knowledgeable, targeted, and competitive strategy by understanding and assessing emotional context.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ3Assessment of Seismic Responses of Square-Hollow-Section Joints in a Lattice Girder with Soil-Structure Interaction
Ozturk, Kasif Furkan; Ozyurt, Emre; Araz, Onur; Cakir, Tufan
The fixed base approach is widely used to obtain the seismic behaviour of Square Hollow Section (SHS) joints in a lattice girder. However, in some cases where soil-structure interaction (SSI) can be relatively significant, this approach may result in incorrect acquisition of the natural periods and dynamic responses of the lattice girders using welded tubular joints. This situation may negatively affect the safety of the structure by causing an underestimation of the dynamic loads acting on the structure. Therefore, this study evaluates the seismic behaviour of SHS joints in a typical lattice girder exposed to different ground motions considering SSI. A nonlinear finite element analysis software, Abaqus, performs the dynamic analyses considering six earthquake excitations with three different frequency contents (a ratio of peak ground acceleration (PGA) to peak ground velocity (PGV)) and four different soil types. After verifying the numerical model, it is determined that 3D solid elements should be used to capture the actual seismic behaviour of the tubular joints in a steel truss frame with or without SSI. A comprehensive parametric study is then carried out to evaluate the peak displacement and stress values on the SHS joints with and without SSI under different ground motions with different PGA/PGV ratios. The findings show that the stresses are concentrated around the column and bottom chord connection region. Besides, the SSI mechanism significantly affects the peak stress and displacement values of the SHS joints, especially in soft soil types. Furthermore, it is observed that the PGA/PGV ratio significantly changes the seismic responses of the steel truss frame.

- BildiriYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ4A Novel BPA Derivation Method Using Linguistic Fuzzy Sets in Dempster-Shafer Theory
Başkan, Elif; Şahin, Rıdvan; Kahraman, C.; Oztaysi, B.; Cebi, S.; Cevik Onar, S.; Tolga, C.; Ucal Sari, I.; Otay, I.
In this study, we present a new method for developing Basic Probability Assignment (BPA) using Linguistic Fuzzy Sets (LFS). Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) is used to efficiently combine different data sources. The use of LFS provides a robust structure for managing uncertainty in decision making by representing knowledge in linguistic terms. However, effectively integrating multiple uncertain sources requires a strong probabilistic approach. To overcome this challenge, we propose a method to derive BPA values directly from linguistic terms, ensuring compatibility with the DST fusion rule. We then use the Dempster-Shafer combination rule to combine information from various sources, thereby improving the reliability of the decision-making process.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ4Evaluation of the Psychometric Properties of the Turkish Form of the Will-to-Live Scale in Older Adults
Kütük, B.
Abstract: The Will-to-Live (WTL) scale measures desire for life and life commitment across populations. However, psychometric evidence for a Turkish older adult WTL screening model is lacking. In this study, the WTL was first translated into Turkish using established procedures, followed by the collection of psychometric information on the Turkish form (WTL-T). Included in the study were community-dwelling older adults (aged 65–85 years) who could be considered representative of the older adult Turkish population, who were asked to complete the WTL scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale, the Geriatric Depression Scale, the Brief Resilient Coping Scale, as well as a single-item WTL and self-rated health. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated an acceptable model fit of the WTL-T, yielding a single-factor model that explained 66.45% of the variance. Furthermore, the WTL-T was found to have high internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.865) and convergent validity was demonstrated by the strong positive correlations identified through the single-item WTL question (r = 0.810, p < 0.001). The moderate to high correlations of the scale with theoretically related measures supported its concurrent validity (r = –0.299 to 0.742, all p’s < 0.01). The evidence presented in the present study identifies the WTL-T as a concise, appropriate and psychometrically sound instrument for the assessment of WTL in older adults living in Turkey.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Effect of frequency content of ground motion on seismic response of buildings with variable aspect ratio including soil-structure interaction
Kaya, Dilek; Cakir, Tufan; Ozturk, Kasif Furkan; Araz, Onur
Soil-structure interaction (SSI) may lead to reduction, amplification or negligible change in structural responses depending on the relationship between the nature of excitations and subsoil conditions. Since neglecting SSI effects may cause uncertainties in seismic design, it is crucial to consider them during the design process. Another important factor affecting the dynamic behavior of structures interacting with the ground is the dynamic properties of the structures. To consider this effect, three buildings with 4, 8, and 12 stories designed in accordance with the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBEC-2018) are analyzed. The aspect ratios of these structures are 2, 4, and 6, corresponding to squat, ordinary, and slender structures, respectively. The primary objective of this study is to simulate the combined effects of these key parameters on the dynamic response of reinforced concrete structures. In the time history analyses, six ground motions classified by three different frequency contents are considered. 3D finite element models of SSI systems are established using ANSYS software. The usability of the numerical models is demonstrated for both SSI and fixed-base cases through three different analytical approaches. The displacement, acceleration, and stress responses are examined through time history analyses. The results indicate that the SSI is not negligible and neglecting the SSI is an oversimplification that does not lead to always-conservative predictions. Moreover, both the frequency content of the excitation and the structural aspect ratio are found to be decisive parameters in seismic response.

Purpose: Motivated by the criticality of transportations system in tourism activities, this study further uncovers the effect of the main transportation modes arising from inbound tourism activities on the ecological footprint across the panel of selected coastline Mediterranean countries (CMC). Design/methodology/approach: The study considers a suitable econometric approach for the case of CMC with the dataset that covers the period 1998–2022. Findings: While the result reveals that all the modes of transportation except air deteriorate environmental sustainability by increasing ecological footprint in the long run, higher impact of environmental woe is associated with the land transportation. Similarly, the findings further show that economic expansion and conventional energy utilization in the examined panel and in each country spurs ecological footprint, thus worsening environmental quality. Meanwhile, for the country-specific observations, ecological footprint is (1) mitigated by tourism activities associated with air, water and land transports in Spain, (2) triggered by tourism activities associated with land transport in Croatia and (3) spurred by land transport in Italy. Originality/value: Policy inference from these results suggests the need to scale up the adoption of a low-emission transportation system in the countries.

The aim of this book chapter is to lay the concepts of sustainable development, ecological footprint, carbon footprint, permaculture and biomimicry, which are thought to complement one another and serve almost the same purpose, on the basis of proactive behaviors. Sustainable development means balancing ecological, social, and economic dimensions and meeting the needs of the present without consuming the resources of future generations. The ecological footprint is an indicator of sustainable development and involves calculations relevant to the world’s energy consumption, capacity and overall biomass efficiency. A carbon footprint is a type of ecological footprint, while biomimicry involves the emulation of nature to create pathways for crafting innovative designs. The discipline of permaculture derives from permanent culture and agriculture and concerns about creating sustainable living spaces. In this regard, sustainability may be ensured with the inclusion of proactive mindsets as opposed to reactive perspectives to facilitate individual ownership of sustainability within social lifestyles and business environments.
