Managing information asymmetry and conflicting interests in multi stakeholder sustainable supply chains using multi-criteria decision analysis

    Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadir; Şimşek, Aybala

This chapter focuses on the challenges which information asymmetry and conflicts of interest present to multi- stakeholder sustainable supply chain design and suggests the use of MCDA to address these challenges. It looks at the ways information imbalances and divergent stakeholder priorities hamper cooperation and sustainability objectives to produce trust problems and ineffectiveness. These challenges are outlined in the chapter using theoretical underpinnings such as Game Theory and Akerlof's Market of Lemons. Next, it illustrates the MCDA's role in dealing with these problems (transparency, balancing conflicting interests and making the decision in an inclusive way). The practical application of MCDA is illustrated via a hypothetical green supply chain project that demonstrates the ability of diverse stakeholder priorities to be harmonised through systematic criteria evaluation and consensus building. The chapter concludes with a discussion of MCDA's potential for integrating environmental, social and economic goals in optimal decision making in complex supply chains.

Mapping Ethics Research in the Hospitality Scholarship

    Polat, Eray; Köseoglu, Mehmet Ali

This paper examines the role of ethics-related research in shaping the intellectual structure of hospitality-literature through a two-step method. The intellectual structure of the most-cited ethics-related references was revealed by co-citation analysis. Content analysis was made to reveal each cluster’s main themes. A database comprising 9664 references from seven hospitality journals, spanning 60 years, was analyzed. The analysis uncovered four thematic clusters, indicating that organizational citizenship behaviors and environmental-ethics are the predominant topics in the hospitality-ethics literature. The previous studies heavily focused on examining relationships and their practical implications. The study adopted a novel approach to bibliometric analysis that has never been used in hospitality ethics-reviews. The results of the concept-discipline-focused hybrid-review provide a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge domain and indicate research directions.

Efficient extraction and determination of Au(iii) ions from acid mine drainage and water samples using silica gel immobilized with Brevibacillus borstelensis

Camoglu, Aslihan Yilmaz; Duran, Celal; Ozdes, Duygu; Nalcaoglu, Aleyna; Bektas, Kadriye Inan; Belduz, Ali Osman

The analysis of gold, which is a precious metal with limited resources, in environmental samples is crucial for the sustainable utilization of natural resources. Therefore, in the present research we have aimed to develop a novel and environmentally friendly bioadsorbent, Brevibacillus borstelensis loaded on silica gel (BB@Si), with outstanding adsorptive properties that can be implemented for quantitative recovery of Au(iii) ions via the solid phase extraction (SPE) technique. After characterizing the developed adsorbent using FTIR and SEM techniques, we conducted a detailed investigation of the critical parameters that influence the extraction performance of Au(iii) ions. Optimum parameters were observed as follows: pH 3.0, adsorption contact time 30 min, eluent type 0.1% (w/v) thiourea in 0.5 M HNO3, elution time 60 min, BB@Si amount 1.0 g L−1, and sample volume 400 mL. Some of the well-known isotherm and kinetic models were applied to the results observed from the adsorption studies. Equilibrium adsorption capacity of BB@Si was estimated to be 66.2 mg g−1 utilizing the Langmuir isotherm model while the limit of detection (LOD) and relative standard deviation (RSD%) were established as 0.99 μg L−1 and 3.7%, respectively. The developed method was utilized smoothly for the quantification of Au(iii) ions in mining wastewater, acid mine drainage (AMD), streams and seawater.

Explainable artificial intelligence for rock discontinuity detection from point cloud with ensemble methods

    Günen, Mehmet Akif

This study presents a framework for the semi-automatic detection of rock discontinuities using a three-dimensional (3D) point cloud (PC). The process begins by selecting an appropriate neighborhood size, a critical step for feature extraction from the PC. The effects of different neighborhood sizes (k = 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100) have been evaluated to assess their impact on classification performance. After that, 17 geometric and spatial features were extracted from the PC. Next, ensemble methods, AdaBoost.M2, random forest, and decision tree, have been compared with Artificial Neural Networks to classify the main discontinuity sets. The McNemar test indicates that the classifiers are statistically significant. The random forest classifier consistently achieves the highest performance with an accuracy exceeding 95% when using a neighborhood size of k = 100, while recall, F-score, and Cohen's Kappa also demonstrate high success. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), an Explainable AI technique, has been used to evaluate feature importance and improve the explainability of black-box machine learning models in the context of rock discontinuity classification. The analysis reveals that features such as normal vectors, verticality, and Z-values have the greatest influence on identifying main discontinuity sets, while linearity, planarity, and eigenvalues contribute less, making the model more transparent and easier to understand. After classification, individual discontinuity sets were detected using a revised DBSCAN from the main discontinuity sets. Finally, the orientation parameters of the plane fitted to each discontinuity were derived from the plane parameters obtained using the Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC). Two real-world datasets (obtained from SfM and LiDAR) and one synthetic dataset were used to validate the proposed method, which successfully identified rock discontinuities and their orientation parameters (dip angle/direction).

Inhibition Effect of Cordyceps sinensis (C. sinensis) Mycelium on Some Metabolic Enzymes and Investigation of Antioxidant Properties

    Balcı, Neslihan

Cordyceps sinensis (CS), a traditional medicinal fungus, is a rich source of bioactive metabolites with pharmacological potential. This study investigated the inhibitory effects of CS mycelium on human carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes I and II (hCA I and hCA II) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), as well as its antioxidant properties. Enzyme inhibition was assessed using spectrophotometric methods, whereas antioxidant capacity was evaluated by DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, FRAP, and Fe3⁺-reducing assays. LC-MS/MS analysis identified key secondary metabolites, including apigenin, apigenin-7-glucoside, (+)-taxifolin, dihydrokaempferol, p-coumaric acid, salicylic acid, and L-theanine, with apigenin as the major constituent. CS strongly inhibited hCA I (IC50 = 1.11 µg/mL) and hCA II (IC50 = 1.77 µg/mL), exceeding the potency of acetazolamide, and also showed relevant AChE inhibition (IC50 = 8.00 µg/mL), comparable to tacrine. Antioxidant assays revealed moderate DPPH activity but strong ABTS and CUPRAC reducing capacities, indicating the structural contributions of flavonoids and phenolic acids. These findings suggest that CS possess dual bioactivity through enzyme inhibition and antioxidant effects, highlighting its therapeutic potential against neurodegenerative and oxidative stress–related diseases.

Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis L.) steaming condensate: phenolic composition and functional activities

Akmeşe, Osman; Sivrikaya, Hüseyin; Baltacı, Cemalettin

This study presents a comprehensive investigation of the bioactive properties of the condensate formed during the steaming treatment of beech wood (Fagus orientalis L.). The phenolic compound profile, antioxidant capacity, enzyme inhibition, and antimicrobial activity of the condensate were evaluated using multiple analytical methods. Rich in total phenolic content (339.20 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid levels (79.74 mg QE/g), the condensate exhibited strong reducing power in the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP), while demonstrating moderate radical scavenging activity in the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2′-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline 6-sulfonic acid)) tests. In antimicrobial assessments, the condensate was found to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus as well as Candida albicans as a pathogen fungus, while showing lower activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Its antifungal efficacy was found to be notable when compared to nystatin. Although the IC₅₀ value of the condensate in α-amylase inhibition assays (1320.00 µg/mL) was weaker than that of the reference inhibitor acarbose (33.26 µg/mL), the results indicate its potential as a plant-based enzyme inhibitor candidate. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed characteristic peaks associated with lignin derivatives, carbohydrates, and ester bonds in the condensate. LC–MS/MS analyses identified chlorogenic acid (1581.65 µg/g) as the major phenolic compound, along with ferulic acid and rosmarinic acid. Beech steaming condensate stands out as a valuable bioactive resource in the context of industrial by-product valorization. With its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzyme-inhibitory properties, it holds promising potential for applications in the food preservation, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. These findings may contribute to the sustainability of the forest industry from a circular economy perspective.

One-step kinetic analysis of Listeria innocua growth as a surrogate for Listeria monocytogenes on arugula leaves with background microbiota: model development and validation

    Ozturk, Samet

This study investigated the growth kinetics of L. monocytogenes and L. innocua on fresh arugula leaves under abusive conditions, considering the presence of background microbiota (BM) including (APC (Aerobic Plate Count), TPC (Total Psychrotrophic Count), and LAB (Lactic Acid Bacteria)). Additionally, the feasibility of using L. innocua as a surrogate for L. monocytogenes was evaluated for industrial practices. Predictive models were developed to assess the effect of temperature and time on the growth kinetics of both microorganisms. Experiments were conducted in triplicate to observe growth kinetics at temperatures from 5 to 35°C. The growth curves were analyzed using one-step analysis with the USDA IPMP-Global Fit software, employing the Huang full/no-lag phase growth as the primary models and the Huang sub-optimal (HSRM) and Ratkowsky sub-optimal square-root as the secondary models. An additional set of isothermal data, collected at 15°C and 20°C, was used to validate the models. Results showed that the minimum growth temperatures were 2.91±0.50°C for L. monocytogenes and 2.88±0.50°C for L. innocua, while 2.05±0.89, 1.93±0.98 and 3.55±1.97°C for APC, TPC and LAB, respectively. The specific growth rates of L. monocytogenes and L. innocua ranged from 0.01 to 0.93 h⁻¹. The root mean square error (RMSE) of model validation and development was less than 0.3 log CFU/g, indicating that the combination of the Huang growth model with HSRM could accurately predict the growth of L. monocytogenes under abusive conditions. Validated models can provide useful input to quantitative risk assessment tools to predict the growth of L. monocytogenes on arugula leaves in the presence of BM during distribution or storage. The findings of this study support the use of L. innocua with R2=0.961 as a suitable surrogate in industrial practices for fresh produce.

A comparative study of Kolmogorov-Arnold networks and multilayer perceptrons for software defect prediction with SHAP analysis

    Turk, Salih; Coskuncay, Ahmet

Software defect prediction is essential for enhancing software quality by detecting software errors early in the development lifecycle. This article presents the usage and a detailed evaluation of Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KAN) and Multilayer Perceptrons (MLP) over eleven prevalent software defect prediction datasets, namely CM1, JM1, KC1, KC3, MC1, MC2, MW1, PC1, PC3, PC4, and PC5. The defect prediction models were established and evaluated using five principal performance metrics: Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F1 Score, and Area Under the Curve (AUC). The experimental findings indicate that KAN consistently surpasses MLP in all datasets and metrics. KAN attains an average accuracy enhancement of almost 12% compared to MLP and demonstrates substantial improvements in precision and recall, rendering it more dependable in detecting defected modules. The paired t-test findings indicate that the performance disparities between KAN and MLP are statistically significant (p-value< 0.05) for the majority of metrics. Also SHAP analysis was performed to determine the important rankings of features for all datasets according to the FastKAN model. This study underscores the promise of KAN as a superior alternative to traditional neural networks for software defect prediction. The results highlight the significance of the usage of sophisticated neural network topologies in tackling intricate software engineering challenges.

Chrome waste utilization in base layers: Mechanical strength and environmental risk assessment

Seferoğlu, Mehmet Tevfik; Acı, Elif Nur

This study investigates the partial substitution of natural aggregate (Na) with chrome mine waste (Crw) in highway base layers, focusing on mechanical performance and environmental safety. Crw-Na mixtures with contents from 0 % to 100 % were tested using CBR, cyclic plate loading, chemical, and leachate tests. The 15 % Crw-85 % Na mixture achieved the highest CBR (287.4 %) with limited deformation (37 mm). Although the 60 % Crw blend also met the required strength level (156.6 %), it showed higher settlement (50 mm) and three times greater vertical strain. SEM-EDX and chemical results indicated increased magnesium content and mineral changes at higher Crw ratios. Leachate tests confirmed compliance with TS266 and international water standards; all samples were categorized as neutral drainage with low metal risk. The findings show that Crw improves strength without causing environmental risk. Among tested mixtures, 15 % Crw offered the most balanced outcome in terms of field stability and performance.

    A Novel Numeric-analytic Method for Time-fractional Swift–Hohenberg (S–H) Equation with Modified Caputo-Fabrizio Derivative

    Şahin, Yasin; Merdan, Mehmet

This work investigates utilizing Adomian decomposition technique (A-ADM) coupled with Aboodh transform as a hybrid approach the solution of Caputo-Fabrizio (CF) fractional order Swift-Hohenberg problem. Effective framework for modeling memory effects and complex system dynamics is provided by CF fractional derivative defined by non-singular exponential kernel. Classical Swift-Hohenberg equation is expanded to account for long-term memory effects, which are crucial in understanding pattern development and chaotic behavior in many physical systems by including CF fractional derivatives. With the suggested Aboodh-Adomian decomposition technique (A-ADM), an approximate analytical solution is provided showing its efficiency and accuracy in solving fractional nonlinear problem. Furthermore shown are convergence and originality of the solution. Graphical depictions of the acquired solutions make use of MATLAB package software. Theoretical results are confirmed by numerical simulations, which further expose the important influence of fractional order on the dynamic features of the system.

Mantle genesis and crustal contamination in Carboniferous granitoids using U-Th-K concentrations at the Akşar Pluton in the Eastern Pontides, NE Türkiye

Maden, Nafız; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Akaryalı, Enver

New radiogenic heat production (RHP) data are presented for Carboniferous granites outcropping in the Akşar region (Bayburt, NE Turkey) to contribute to ongoing debates on the genetic and lithologic relationship between the Akşar and Gümüşhane plutons, which is the most widely distributed granitic rocks in the region. The scope of this study consists of rocks composed of enriched mantle material metasomatized by fluids from the previously subducted plate. We observed average K value for the Akşar Pluton was found to be 3.09 ± 1.58 %. Additionally, average Th/U and U/Th values of 3.95 ± 1.37 and 0.29 ± 0.10, respectively. The calculated RHP value for the Akşar Pluton was 2.20 ± 0.56 μWm−3. Numerical results suggest that the Carboniferous Akşar pluton's primary magma was the product of mixing lithospheric mantle and mid-to-lower crustal melts because of partial melting, differentiation, and emplacement in the shallow continental magma chamber. The geochemical and petrogenetic characteristics of the Akşar region magmas suggest that crustal contamination occurred at multiple levels, particularly within the lower to middle crust of the plutonic core complex. This complex likely retains geochemical signatures indicative of subducted Paleotethys oceanic lithosphere. These findings provide critical insights into the magmatic evolution of the Eastern Pontides, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of crust–mantle interactions and the broader geodynamic framework of northeastern Türkiye.

First responders’ thoughts and experiences about the international search and rescue teams during the Kahramanmaras earthquakes

    Kolcu, Veysel Karani; Mızrak, Sefa

National capacity may be insufficient for disasters that affect many settlements and people simultaneously. This situation requires international humanitarian assistance for post-disaster search and rescue, public health, nutrition, security, and coordination. The objective of this study was to reveal the opinions of first responders about the work of the (international search and rescue) ISAR teams following the earthquakes that occurred in Türkiye on 6 February 2023. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form with 41 first responders who had worked with them or observed their work, and analyzed via thematic analysis using the MAXQDA 24 programme. The results were presented under seven themes: devotion, equipment and material sufficiency, knowledge and experience, coordination, cooperation, communication, and psychological resilience. The first responders stated that the ISAR teams worked wholeheartedly and that their knowledge, expertise, and equipment were sufficient and advanced. They also indicated that the teams worked in a coordinated manner and that their harmony with local teams and the public was great. However, when working with them, language-related communication barriers negatively affected the workflow. The results of this study will provide insight to organisations and managers who develop and implement international humanitarian aid policies.

Spatial and temporal patterns of drought under different scenarios for Türkiye in the 21st century

Yıldız, Mehmet Berkant; Nacar, Sinan; Şan, Murat; Kankal, Murat

This study investigates the impact of climate change on drought conditions in Türkiye for two distinct future periods: the near future (2021–2050) and the far future (2071–2100), under two emission scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). High-resolution regional climate projections from 19 GCM-RCM combinations within the EURO-CORDEX framework were evaluated. Based on performance analysis against ERA5-Land data, the four best-performing models were selected for multi-model ensemble averaging (MMEA). Drought conditions were assessed using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) at 3-, 6-, and 12-month time scales. Three trend analysis methods, Innovative Trend Analysis (ITA), Modified Mann-Kendall (MMK), and Sen's Slope, were applied to examine spatiotemporal drought patterns. SPI-based analyses show a significant increase in short- and medium-term variability (SPI-3 and SPI-6) and long-term droughts (SPI-12), especially in the Central Anatolia, Southeastern and Eastern regions. The applied trend detection methods consistently point to a widespread drying tendency, with more pronounced changes projected in the latter half of the century. Under the RCP4.5 scenario, although the drought signals are less severe, the persistence of negative trends highlights that Türkiye will still be at risk, even with moderate efforts to mitigate climate change. These findings underscore the urgent need for integrating climate-driven drought projections into national and regional planning efforts.

Inheritance in the Mandailing Community: Value Changes from a Legal Culture Perspective

Hsb, Putra Halomoan; Siregar, Fatahuddin Aziz; Karimullah, Suud Sarim

This study explores the concept of marbagi dos in relation to the changing inheritance practices of the Mandailing community, viewed through the lens of legal culture. Marbagi dos, which literally means equal in the Mandailing indigenous people, has traditionally had a very important social dimension and equality. The type of research methodology used in this study is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The research data was obtained through interview techniques and participatory observation. In-depth interviews will be carried out with traditional leaders, scholars, and community members who play a direct role in the inheritance process. Using a legal culture approach, this study analyzes how the changes in values in Mandailing society are influenced by Islam which has implications for changes in inheritance practices in Mandailing, as well as how the community balances customary traditions with modern equality demands. The results of the study show that this inheritance transformation is a reflection of the adaptation of the Mandailing people to social changes, while maintaining cultural values within the framework of customary law. The implications of this study suggest that customary law is dynamic and capable of adapting to Islamic law and state law, highlighting the need for synergy between these three legal systems in crafting more inclusive policies.

Abusive supervision: can workplace friendships exacerbate work alienation and intent to quit?

Özbek, Mehmet Ferhat; Stefanidis, Abraham; Banai, Moshe; Akar, Vural

Purpose – Drawing on conservation of resources, similarity-attraction and social comparison theories, this research aims to examine how supervisors’ abusive behaviour influences employees’ intent to quit by investigating the mediating role of work alienation and the moderating role of workplace friendship. Design/methodology/approach – In Study I, time-lagged survey data were collected from 241 academic institutions’ employees at two separate times to empirically test the study’s hypotheses. In Study II, four different scenario manipulations were administered to 220 academic institutions’ undergraduate and graduate students. Both studies were conducted in Türkiye. Findings – The results of the survey indicate a positive relationship between employee exposure to supervisors’ abusive behaviour and their intent to quit, with work alienation mediating this relationship, and workplace friendship partially boosting the intensity of the negative effect. Similar results were confirmed by the findings of the survey conducted across four scenario manipulations in the education sector. Research limitations/implications – Despite the two-sector, two-instrument study design used, this research may only partially capture and explain the relationships among the studied variables. To enhance the generalisability of their findings, future studies should investigate broader cultural and occupational contexts, using both longitudinal and mixed-method designs. Practical implications – Strong workplace friendships may intensify the negative impact of abusive supervision, increasing staff alienation and turnover intentions, signalling risks for team stability and retention. Economic implications of high-level employee turnover should be considered by managers. Originality/value – This study challenges the prevailing assumption that workplace or academic friendships are universally beneficial. By demonstrating that strong workplace friendships can exacerbate the negative effects of supervisors’ or instructors’ abusive behaviour, it introduces a more nuanced understanding of interpersonal dynamics in organisational and educational settings.
