Attitudes Toward Ethically Questionable Negotiation Tactics: A Two-Country Study

Banai, Moshe; Stefanidis, Abraham; Shetach, Ana; Özbek, Mehmet Ferhat

Current research has identified five discrete US negotiation tactics, a traditional one considered to be ethical, and four considered to be ethically questionable. Scholars have independently used culture to explain how the endorsement of these five negotiation tactics varies across nations. They have also independently used interpersonal trust and ethics propensity to explain antecedents of the endorsement of those five negotiation tactics. This research combines all those variables into one model that investigates the influence of horizontal and vertical individualism–collectivism, ethical idealism, and trust propensity on employees’ attitudes toward ethically questionable negotiation tactics in Israel and Kyrgyzstan. A survey questionnaire was translated from English to Hebrew and Kyrgyz, and 615 responses were collected from employees in various industries in the two countries. We empirically confirmed three types of questionable negotiation tactics discovered in previous one-nation studies, namely, pretending, deceiving, and lying. Vertical individualism was found to be positively, and horizontal collectivism was found to be negatively, related to pretending, deceiving, and lying. Ethical idealism was found to be negatively related to the endorsement of the lying tactics, while trust propensity was negatively related to the pretending tactics. Compared with Israel, employees’ endorsement of ethically questionable negotiation tactics was significantly higher in Kyrgyzstan. Contribution to theory and practice is discussed.

Effect of rootstock on grafted grapevine quality

    Köse, B.; Karabulut, B.; Ceylan, K.

As the home of numerous grape genotypes, Turkey is one of the major centers of viniculture genetic material in the world. 'Merzifon Karasi' (Vitis vinifera L.) is one of the most valuable red wine grape cultivars in Turkey. However, despite the variety's relative age, 'Merzifon Karasi' has yet to be tested on different rootstocks. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effects of different rootstocks on the growth characteristics of 'Merzifon Karasi' scion. Growth parameters (shoot length (cm), shoot diameter (mm), internode length (cm), total and unit leaf area (cm2), root length (cm), root scale (0-4) and root number) were calculated and carbohydrate content (%) of the grafted grapevine shoots, trunk and roots analysed for 9 different rootstocks. Significant differences (P < 0.01) were found among rootstocks. 8B and Rupestris du Lot rated best in terms of root length, root scale and root number (P < 0.01). Highest shoot length, shoot diameter (P < 0.01) and internode length were obtained, respectively, with the 110R, 8B and Rupestris du Lot rootstocks (P < 0.05). Rupestris du Lot also produced the grapevines with the highest total leaf area per plant and main shoot, whereas the grapevines grafted on 8B had the highest unit leaf area (P < 0.01). Sugar, starch and carbohydrate contents (%) of the different plant parts also varied significantly by rootstock (P < 0.01), with the highest root carbohydrate content measured in the 5C (22.4 %) rootstock, and the highest trunk and shoot carbohydrate content measured in the 110R (12.1 and 13.4 %, respectively). In sum, the study found the best rootstocks for 'Merzifon Karasi' to be 8B, Rupestris du Lot and 110R in terms of root and shoot growth, whereas 'Merzifon Karasi' grape grafted onto 110R and 5C rootstock had the highest carbohydrate contents.

Prediction of wave parameters by using fuzzy inference system and the parametric models along the south coasts of the Black Sea

Akpinar, Adem; Özger, Mehmet; Kömürcü, Murat Ihsan

Forecasting of sea-state characteristics has a great importance in coastal and ocean engineering studies. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate performances of Adaptive-Network-Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and several parametric methods in the Black Sea. For this purpose, different fuzzy models with different input combinations were developed for two different wind data sources (TSMS and ECMWF) at two offshore buoy stations. It also aimed to apply several approaches to event-based data sets for wave predictions. Generally, in literature the tendency is to use time series data for wave predictions. In this kind of prediction approach, lagged time series data are taken as inputs and current or future variables are taken as output. In this study, event-based data for each independent storm were extracted from time series data. Simultaneous or concurrent data of wind speed, blowing duration, fetch length and wave characteristics were detected for each single storm. These event data were then used to set up models. The hindcast results were validated with significant wave height and mean wave period data recorded in Hopa and Sinop buoy stations. The performance of developed fuzzy models were also compared with that of four different parametric methods (Wilson, SPM, Jonswap, and CEM methods) applied for two wind data sources at both buoy stations. Finally, it was determined that in the prediction of both wave parameters (H s and T z) the ANFIS models (R = 0.66, squared correlation coefficient, and MAE = 0.37 m, mean absolute error, for the best model in prediction of H s) were more accurate than the parametric methods (R = 0.63 and MAE = 0.75 m for the best model in prediction of H s).

Simultaneous separation and preconcentration of Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions by coprecipitation without any carrier element in some food and water samples

Duran, Celal; Tumay, Sureyya O.; Ozdes, Duygu; Serencam, Huseyin; Bektas, Hakan

A simple and highly sensitive separation and preconcentration procedure, which has minimal impact on the environment, has been developed. The procedure is based on the carrier element-free coprecipitation of Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions by using 2-{4-[2-(1H-Indol-3-yl)ethyl]-3-(4-chlorobenzyl)-5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl}-N′-(pyrrol-2-ylmethyliden)acetohydrazide (ICOTPA), as an organic coprecipitant. The levels of analyte ions were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The detection limits for Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions were found to be 0.27 and 0.58 μg L-1, respectively, and the relative standard deviations for the analyte ions were lower than 4.0%. Spike tests and certified reference material analyses were performed to validate the method. The method was successfully applied for the determination of Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions levels in sea and stream water as liquid samples and red lentil and rice as solid samples.

Geochemical fingerprints of Late Triassic calc-alkaline lamprophyres from the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey: A key to understanding lamprophyre formation in a subduction-related environment

Karsli, Orhan; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Kaliwoda, Melanie; Uysal, Ibrahim; Aydin, Faruk; Kandemir, Raif; Fehr, Karl-Thomas

The Eastern Pontides in NE Turkey is one of the major orogenic belts in Anatolia. In this paper, we report our new 40Ar/39Ar dating, mineral chemistry, major and trace elements and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic analyses of the lamprophyre intrusions in this region. The lamprophyres are widely scattered and intrude Late Carboniferous granitoid rocks. The lamprophyres exhibit fine-grained textures and are mineralogically uniform. Hornblende 40Ar/39Ar dating yielded a plateau age of 216.01±10.64Ma. Based on their geochemistry, mineral compositions and paragenesis, the lamprophyres are classified as calc-alkaline lamprophyres in general and spessartites in particular, which are rich in large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb, Ba, K) but depleted in Nb and Ti. Our samples exhibit moderate fractionation in LREE patterns approximately 100 times that of chondrite but HREE abundances less than 10 times that of chondrite. These calc-alkaline lamprophyres display a range of ISr (216Ma) values from 0.70619 to 0.71291 and εNd (216Ma) values from -1.4 to 4.1, with TDM=1.11 to 2.20Ga. Their Pb isotopic ratios indicate an enriched mantle source. The enrichment process is related to metasomatism of a subcontinental lithospheric mantle source, which is caused by a large quantity of H2O-rich fluids, rather than sediments released from oceanic crust at depth during the closure of the Paleotethys Ocean in Triassic times. All of the geochemical data and the trace element modeling suggest that the primary magma of the calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline spessartites was generated at depth by a low degree of partial melting (~1-10%) of a previously enriched lithospheric mantle wedge consisting of phlogopite-bearing spinel peridotite. The ascendance of a hot asthenosphere triggered by extensional events caused partial melting of mantle material. The rising melts were accompanied by fractional crystallization and crustal contamination en route to the surface. All of the geochemical features combined with regional data suggest that the Eastern Pontides calc-alkaline lamprophyres originated in an extensional environment along an active continental margin throughout the Late Triassic. Such an extensional event, causing upwelling of hot asthenosphere, led to the opening of the northern branch of the Neotethys as a back-arc basin farther south of the Eastern Pontides.

Origin of analcimes in the Tertiary volcanic rocks from the Eastern Pontides (NE Turkey): A textural, mineralogical and geochemical approach

Yücel, Cem; Temizel, Irfan; Abdioʇlu, Emel; Arslan, Mehmet; Yaʇcioʇlu, Ufuk Celal

Silica-undersaturated mafic volcanic rocks of Tertiary age in form of lava flows, dikes and sills of tephritic compositions extend along the northern part of the Eastern Pontides. These rocks typically contain Ca-clinopyroxene (Wo32-53En26-54Fs8-24), analcime, Fe-Ti oxides, apatite and minor olivine, plagioclase (An49 - 94), K-feldspar (Or29 - 66), hornblende and phlogopite in microgranular porphyritic, hyalo-microlitic porphyritic and glomeroporphyritic textures. Petrochemical features of the studied rocks, such as enrichment in LILE, depletion in Nb, Ta and Ti and moderate or high LREE/HREE ratios, provide strong evidence for melt production from a subduction-metasomatized lithospheric mantle. Besides, the rocks are characterized by their low K2O contents and low K2O/Na2O ratios as a result of analcimization. Analcime detected in these rocks appears to have formed by pseudomorphic mineral replacement reactions. Euhedral or anhedral analcime crystals, 100 - 600 um in diameter, are set in groundmass and display six-sided polygon or rounded shape and irregular cracks. The analcime pseudomorphs are colourless, milky white to grey and occur in clinopyroxene or in the groundmass. Based on the electron microprobe results, analcimes contain a minor amount of cations other than Na and probably represent the remnants of leucite as marked by K-zoning. X-ray diffraction studies of the analcime-bearing samples confirm the presence of cubic and tetragonal analcime crystals in addition to tetragonal leucite. The presence of Ca-clinopyroxene and plagioclase rather than their sodic equivalents, presence of anhydrous mineral phases and lack of Na differentiation trend as well as partial alteration of the rocks likely supports the secondary growth of analcime either during cooling or after magma solidification.

A large and rapid planar failure: Causes, mechanism, and consequences (Mordut, Gumushane, Turkey)

    Alemdag, S.; Akgun, A.; Kaya, A.; Gokceoglu, C.

Gumushane is a small city located on highway connecting the harbour city Trabzon in the Black Sea Region of Turkey to the Eastern Anatolia. Following an excavation to create an area for housing on the northeast side of this highway, a large and rapid planar failure inclined to the southwest occurred. A large amount of fractured and weathered granitic material moved downward over this planar failure. After the failure, the highway was closed to traffic for 1 week, and more than ten houses on top of this failure were collapsed completely. The present study aims to investigate the mechanism of this failure. The study was performed using kinematical, limit equilibrium and numerical analyses for both post- and pre-failure conditions. Based on the detailed field observations, the failure mode was determined to be planar, and the slide mechanism was determined to be controlled by three fault planes. As a result of these analyses, it can be concluded that the slope before failure had critical conditions and that the excavation and uncontrolled blasting triggered and accelerated the slope failure.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) essential oil on butter stability. For this aim, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 wt-% essential oil was added to the butter. Antioxidant activity of the essential oil was compared to that of synthetic antioxidant BHT (100 ppm). All samples were stored at 4±1°C for 90 days. Thiobarbituric acid and peroxide values of all samples containing essential oil were decreased depending on concentrations. The amount of 0.2% of essential oil had showed strong antioxidant activity, which was almost equal to that of BHT. The addition of essential oil reduced total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and coliform bacteria count during storage period but did not show remarkable antifungal activity. Samples containing essential oil were preferred by the panellists compared to Control sample. Present results indicate that black cumin essential oil may be considered as a new source of natural antioxidant.

    Çavdar, Özlem; Bayraktar, Alemdar

The nonlinear seismic behavior of a collapsed reinforced concrete (RC) residential building in the city of Van in Turkey is investigated by the static pushover and nonlinear time history analyses. The selected RC structure was designed according to the 1975 version of Turkish Earthquake Code (TEC-1975). The building had experienced heavy damage, and it was demolished in the Van earthquake on October 23, 2011. The 2007 version of Turkish Earthquake Code (TEC-2007) is considered for the assessing seismic performance evaluation of the selected RC building. The RC structure presents collapse performance level under the earthquake loads. Besides, the analytical solutions show that different performance levels for the sections are obtained from the pushover and nonlinear time history methods.

Improvement of Coercivity and Curie Temperature of Sintered Nd-Fe-B Permanent Magnets by Addition of Cu and Ni

    Başoğlu, M.; Yanmaz, E.

Sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets are some of the strongest magnetic materials showing magnetic properties. Blending addition is frequently performed in order to improve the magnetic properties of these materials. In this work, high-melting point Ni and low-melting point Cu were added to Nd15Fe77B8 ingot by blending. As a result of structural analysis, it was observed that 0.2 wt% Cu + Ni addition improved the structure of the material; on the other hand, excessive addition resulted in porosity. It was also observed that 0.2 wt% addition improved the magnetic properties, and Curie temperature increased with increasing addition ratio.

The effects of chemical attacks on physical and mechanical properties of concrete produced under cold weather conditions

    Çullu, Mustafa; Arslan, Metin

This study investigates the effects of corrosive conditions on the physical and mechanical properties of concrete produced in cold weather. 30% calcium nitrate and 5% hydroxyethylaminemixture (HEA) were used as additives in antifreeze. Within 15 min of placing the prepared concrete samples in molds, the samples were put in a deep freezer. They were exposed to frost at 0 C, -5 C, -10 C, -15 C and -20 C degrees in the deep freezer over two days. The samples were taken out of the freezer and removed from the forms one day later. They were cured in water at room temperature until the 28th day. The samples were then exposed to sulfuric acid of 5% concentration (H2SO4), magnesium sulfate of 7500 mg/L concentration (MgSO4), sodium sulfate of 5% concentration (NaCl), and corrosive cure and water-curing until the 120th day. At the end of the curing period, the permeable pore space volume, water absorption ratio, unit volume weight, capillarity ratio, impermeability, compressive strength, static modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio and tensile strength values of the concrete samples were determined. The results showed that the physical and mechanical properties of the concrete were negatively affected by the corrosive conditions.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were collected form a Turkish hospital. Antimicrobial susceptibility was performed using the Vitek 2 Compact system, and 24 isolates were categorized as multidrug resistant (n = 18), extensively-drug resistant (n = 5), or pan-drug resistant (n = I). PCR and DNA sequence analysis revealed that 1 strain possessed the bla(GES-5) and another carried a novel bla(VIM) variant, named VIM-38. This new gene exhibited 1 amino acid substitution (Ala265Val) in comparison to its closest variant, VIM-5. Both VIM encoding genes were clones and demonstrated similar susceptibility profile when expressed in identical background. The presence of VIM-38 increases the diversity of carbapenemases in Turkey. The Eastern Black Sea-type volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits: Geochemistry, zircon U-Pb geochronology and an overview of the geodynamics of ore genesis

Eyuboglu, Yener; Santosh, M.; Yi, Keewook; Tuysuz, Necati; Korkmaz, Sadettin; Akaryali, Enver; Dudas, Francis O.; Bektas, Osman

The Meso-Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt provides a key to evaluate the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits associated with convergent margin tectonics in a Cordilleran-type orogenic belt. Here we present new geological, geochemical and zircon U-Pb geochronological data, and attempt to characterize the metallogeny through a comprehensive overview of the important VMS mineralizations in the belt. The VMS deposits in the northern part of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt occur in two different stratigraphic horizons consisting mainly of felsic volcanic rocks within the late Cretaceous sequence. SHRIMP zircon U-Pb analyses from ore-bearing dacites yield weighted mean Pb-206/U-238 ages ranging between 91.1 +/- 1.3 and 82.6 +/- 1 Ma. The felsic rocks of first and second horizons reveal geochemical characteristics of subduction-related calc-alkaline and shoshonitic magmas, respectively, in continental arcs and represent the immature and mature stages of a late Cretaceous magmatic arc. The nature of the late Cretaceous magmatism in the northern part of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt and the various lithological associations including volcaniclastics, mudstones and sedimentary facies indicate a rift-related environment where dacitic volcanism was predominant. The eastern Pontides VMS deposits are located within the caldera-like depressions and are closely associated with dome-like structures of felsic magmas, with their distribution controlled by fracture systems. Based on a detailed analyses of the geological, geophysical and geodynamic information, we propose that the VMS deposits were generated either in intra arc or near arc region of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt during the southward subduction of the Tethys oceanic lithosphere. İslam kaynaklarına göre Sebt Yahudileri'nin maymuna dönüştürülmesi meselesi

    Kurban, Nurahmet Kurban Nur Ahmet
