Particle Erosion Performance of Additive Manufactured 316L Stainless Steel Materials

    Azakli, Zeki; Gümrük, Recep

Many critical parts such as surface parts of high-speed trains, bins and hoppers, and pipes, bends and valves in material transportation applications as well as a helicopter, mixer, and turbine blades, which can be exposed to particle wear due to the application environment, can be easily manufactured today due to the advances in 3D printing technology. For this reason, an experimental study was carried out to determine the particle erosion behavior of 316L stainless steel parts built by the laser melting method, which is one of the 3D printing technologies. The rectangular plate samples produced with various laser manufacturing parameters were subjected to particle erosion tests at different impingement angles in accordance with the ASTM G76 standard at 140 m/s impact speed. The results showed that the erosion behavior develops in a characteristic similar to the wrought sample, and laser parameters play an efficient role. For example, the porosity ratio decreases at low scanning speeds, resulting in significant improvements in erosion behavior. Also, it was found that the particle erosion behavior of the 3D printed parts could be improved in a serious amount by applying a heat treatment process. Consequently, the obtained results in this study promotes the more comprehensive works regarding the optimization of several laser manufacturing parameters such as scan speed, build direction, laser power, hatch spacing, layer thickness, scan strategy and laser exposure time to obtain the best particle erosion behavior and determination of the most suitable materials among the several others which can be used in 3D printing.

    Chingiz Aitmatov's grand narrative

    Çakin, Ömer; Günay, Mehmet Akif

Beyond political and cultural criticisms, grand narratives have the authority to disclose real facts. This authority is most effective in the field of culture. Grand narratives are the universal presentation of local culture. In a culture dominated by grand narratives, the dominant ideology of the regime is to control knowledge. Grand narratives play a role in generalizing and transferring information skillfully while describing the contemporary situation. A novelist was defined as a mirror reflecting the period and society in which he lived. Likewise, Chingiz Aitmatov tried to depict the political, social, and cultural structure of his period, and accordingly, formed his own grand narrative. The author skillfully revealed the facts of the period regarding the Marxist tradition and described the social, cultural, and political structure of the period using a tentative language in parallel with the facts such as analogy, myth, and legend.

Contribution to the taxonomic knowledge of acanthodactylus (Squamata, lacertidae): Description of a new lacertid lizard species from eastern anatolia, turkey

    Kurnaz, Muammer; Şahin, Mehmet Kürşat

Acanthodactylus Wiegmann, 1834 is one of the most diverse and widespread lizard genus in the Palearctic realm. Here, we describe a new species, - Acanthodactylus ilgazi sp. nov. - from the Anatolian Peninsula. This new species ranges approximately 250 km north from the closest population of this genus in Turkey. Compared to other fringe-fingered lizards, the new species is phylogenetically close to A. robustus, A. tristrami and A. orientalis but it has some distinct morphological characteristics: Reddish coloration under the tail, a sharp white or grayish stripe in the middle of the dorsum, and four plates in a row on the 4th finger. Moreover, phylogenetic molecular data, based on cyt b gene fragment, verifies that the new species is phylogenetically a member of the tristrami species group with 13.03%, 17.35% and 20.56 genetic distance respectively from A. orientalis, A. tristrami and A. robustus. Lastly, the known range of this species, located in Yazıhan, Malatya in Eastern Anatolia, is restricted by a dam, thus habitat loss endangers its continuity. Therefore, the conservation status of this species should be assessed immediately.

    Özad Düzgün, Azer

Aim: The aim of this study was to identify antimicrobial resistance genes, virulence factor genes, and porin loss or mutations exhibited by the multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strain. Materials and Methods: Whole-genome sequencing was done via the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform. Strain identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing of strains were performed by the Vitek 2 automated system. Multilocus sequence typing analysis was carried out using seven conserved housekeeping genes. Results: The strain was resistant to penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, fosfomycin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. The isolate was found to carry KPC-3, CTX-M-27, SHV-11, SHV-67, and TEM-1 β-lactamases. The clonal subtype of the isolate was ST147, and it possessed wzi64 and wzc38 alleles. Fifteen different point mutations (N49S, L59V, R146H, V178P, G189T, F198Y, V202L, F207Y, A217S, T222L, D223G, H235N, A280V, N304E, and S346N) were detected in the OmpK36 porin. A frame shift was observed in OmpK35 and two different point mutations (I70M and I128M) were found in the OmpK37 porin, in addition to seven mutations observed on the AcrR. Conclusions: This study demonstrated for the first time that the ST147 clone produced CTX-M-27 as well as KPC-3. In addition, new mutations were detected in the outer membrane proteins. These mutations together with the production of extended-spectrum β-lactamase and carbapenemase were found to contribute to the resistance of the ST147 clone to carbapenem and other antibiotics.

Mineralogical and Chemical Characteristics of Clay Areas, Gümüşhane Region (NE Turkey), and Their Detection Using the Crósta Technique with Landsat 7 and 8 Images

Vural, Alaaddin; Akpinar, İbrahim; Sipahi, Ferkan

The clay areas in Gümüşhane (NE Turkey) were examined in mineralogical and geochemical terms, and by remote sensing methods. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and chemical analysis were completed on samples from 11 selected clay areas in the region. Within the scope of remote sensing, Landsat 7 and 8 satellite images of the region were processed with the Crósta technique to assess the clay areas. The Kale and Tamzı clays are contained within a Late Cretaceous turbiditic series. The clays in Canca, Refene and Çamlıca occur in intensively hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks of the Eocene Alibaba Formation. The other clay areas are in the Liassic Şenköy Formation consisting of a volcano-sedimentary series. The clays in the Şenköy Formation are generally below the coal levels. While mainly illite and lesser kaolinite were determined in Dörtkonak, Alemdar, Yukarı Kov and Çamlıca, the clays in Tahnis and Kabantaşı are smectite. Tekke, Canca and Refene clays are kaolinite with smaller amounts of illite, whereas Kale and Tamzı clays are mainly chlorite with lower content of illite–smectite interlayers. Illites in Dörtkonak, Alemdar, Yukarı Kov and Çamlıca are poor in iron and magnesium and formed by hydrothermal alteration of feldspars in the host rocks. Findings of the remote sensing studies using Landsat 7 and 8 datasets were compatible with the results obtained from field observations and general geological studies, and so it is concluded that the Crósta technique provided good results for exploration of clay occurrences and their determination in the region.

Preparation of melon peel biochar/CoFe2O4 as a new adsorbent for the separation and preconcentration of Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) ions by solid-phase extraction in water and vegetable samples

    Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal

The present research describes the successful preparation of melon peel biochar modified with CoFe2O4 (MPBC/CoFe2O4) followed by its usage as a new sorbent to separate, preconcentrate, and determine the toxic heavy metal ions by magnetic solid-phase extraction. The metal ion desorption was performed by 0.1 M HCl solution with a volume of 5.0 mL. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was utilized for detection of the analyte levels. SEM–EDX, TEM, XRD, and FTIR techniques were carried out to illuminate the structure of MPBC/CoFe2O4. The fundamental variables affecting the adsorption and elution efficiencies of the analyte ions including solution pH, MPBC/CoFe2O4 amount, type and concentration of eluent, adsorption and desorption equilibrium time, and sample volume were optimized. The detection limits were calculated as 0.41, 1.82, and 3.16 µg L−1 for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions, respectively, with the relative standard deviation of lower than 4.2%. There were no substantial interference effects on the analyte ion recovery due to the presence of foreign ions at high levels. Five minutes of contact time was adequate to attain the adsorption equilibrium. The adsorption capacity of MPBC/CoFe2O4 was obtained as 106.4, 65.4, and 188.7 mg g−1 for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions, respectively, by utilizing Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-second order model is favorable to identify the adsorption kinetics. The method was validated by spike/recovery test, and then, it was successfully implemented to determine the aforementioned analyte levels in sea and stream water, pepper, black cabbage, eggplant, and tomato samples.

Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Arslan, Mehmet; Temizel, İrfan; CemYücel; Aydınçakır, Emre

The Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt (EPOB) as a well-preserved ancient magmatic arc situated in the eastern part of the Sakarya Zone and has key importance to allow for proper reconstruction of the geodynamic evolution of the region. The region accepted as important part of Alpine–Himalayan Belt comprises of many granitoids of the Late Cretaceous age. This paper presents new mineral chemistry, bulk-rock petrochemistry, U-Pb geochronology and radiogenic and stable isotope geochemistry data from the Arpaköy and Oyman granitoids in the north part of the EPOB to interpretation of the igneous activity and geodynamic evolution of the region in Late Cretaceous era. Emplacement ages of 86.82 ± 0.58 Ma for the Oyman granitoid and 82.0 ± 2.3 Ma for the Arpaköy granitoid according to laser ablation ICP-MS U–Pb zircon dating. The Arpaköy granitoid are gabbro diorite, diorite and granite, whereas the Oyman granitoid are tonalite and granite in composition. They show metaluminous-peraluminous transitional (ASI = 0.79–1.20) low to medium-K calc-alkaline features. The rock samples from granitoids are characterized by enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and high field strength elements (HFSE) depletion with concave-upward shapes (LaN/LuN = 1.88 to 6.04). The crystallization temperatures are 648 °C–913 °C and the pressure values are 0.2–3.0 kbar, which indicates emplacement depth of the studied granitoids varying from ~1 to 9 km correspond to shallow crustal depths. They show considerable variations in εNd(i) (−4.02 to 1.50) and 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.70478–0.70689). The 206Pb/204Pb ratios are between 17.97 and 18.65, and δ18O are varying from +5.4 to +9.3‰. The parental magma of the Arpaköy and Oyman granitoids originated from a melt of the enriched lithospheric mantle and the fractional crystallization and lesser assimilation processes has important role on the evolution of magmas in the shallow crustal levels.

Safer-Driving: Application of Deep Transfer Learning to Build Intelligent Transportation Systems

    Ünlü, Ramazan

Deep learning methods are widely used in the field of transportation as well as in many areas. These days, deep learning methods produce very successful results thanks to big data, where data collection and storage are much easier than in past years. However, it can be quite difficult to collect data or find the right data in some cases. On the other hand, even if the desired data is collected enough, training deep neural networks to learn from these data may not be comfortable in terms of hardware needed for ordinary users. In these cases, transfer learning can be an exit point, which is very popular in deep understanding, especially when the amount of data is limited. In this study, we have aimed to give comprehensive guidance on using a transfer learning strategy to create a detection model to establish a safer transportation system. More specifically, we have developed a classification model to alleviate accidents due to deer on the road. We have implemented VGG-16 convolutional neural network architecture as a part of the structured transfer learning framework. Computational results show that high accuracy performance can be achieved by implementing VGG-16 with the respectively small size of a dataset.

This study aimed to develop an effective decontamination process for whole yellow and white onions with maintained quality attributes. For this purpose, a far infrared radiation (FIR) process was evaluated to determine its effects on microbial safety and quality of the onions. Prior to the FIR process, samples were inoculated with Salmonella culture to about 7–8 log10 CFU/cm2 and stored for 1–48 h at room temperature. Inoculated samples were then processed up to 120 s at 400 °C infrared source temperature. Temperature chance of the onions was recorded by using T-type thermocouples, and surface temperature distribution was obtained with an infrared thermal camera. Quality attributes (color changes, mass losses and textural changes) were also evaluated following the FIR process. The results indicated that 3.3 and 2.4 log10 CFU/cm2 reductions in the Salmonella counts were obtained for the whole yellow and white onions, stored for 1 h at room temperature after 120 s FIR processing. The background microbial population on the outer skin of the onions was under the detection limit (<1 log10 CFU/g). It was observed that the effectiveness of FIR treatment on Salmonella decontamination decreased as the storage time increased from 1 to 48 h at room temperature. FIR process did not significantly affect the quality attributes of the onions, and the results confirmed the potential use of FIR process for surface decontamination of the onions. Further studies were suggested to design an effective FIR system for industrial scale applications.

The effect of pozzolans and mineral wastes on alkali-silica reaction in recycled aggregated mortar

    Külekçi, Gökhan

In this study, it was aimed to examine recycled aggregates (RA), which are considered as aggregates, in terms of alkali-silica reaction (ASR) before being used in concrete, to determine the risk status and to reduce the ASR value. In order to reduce and stop the ASR, the cement was replaced with clay brick and fly-ash by 10–40 %. Marble waste and Pb-Zn mine waste were used instead of RA in order to reduce aggregate reactivity. At the end of 28 days, compared to the control sample, it was observed that mortar bar samples containing tailings instead of fine RA has 18 % less expansion and marble waste (MW) added samples again instead of fine RA has 34 % less expansion. Furthermore, 40 % fly ash (FA) added samples decreased the level of ASR for 96 %, and in 10 % clay brick mixed samples ASR formation is decreased to 85 %. As a result, recycled aggregates were determined to be reactive for ASR. It has been determined that marble and lead-zinc mine facility wastes added as replace with to RA reduce the expansion effect by ASR in the cement paste. With this study, it has contributed to the safe use of the increasing use of RA in the world.
