Coordinates of the East and West in Mim Kara’s Doğuya Hüzün Turları (Sorrow Tours to the East)

    Doğan, Çağlayan; Hakkıoğlu, Mümin

This study aims to determine the borders of the east and west through arguments in Mim Kara’s Doğuya Hüzün Turları (Sorrow Tours to the East), a volume woven with prose poems. It will scrutinise the poet’s thoughts regarding the identity of the easterner and westerner through the said borders. When contemporary Turkish poetry and orientalist studies are taken into consideration, it is seen that the thoughts in Mim Kara’s Doğuya Hüzün Turları do not draw a distinction on places contrary to the general east-west tendency which is created with imperialist purposes. Mim Kara states that the places that are located east and west are not just determined by their coordinates. In the book, the general tendency is to escape, and this escape is from rationality and quantifiable knowledge towards innocence. When this escape is considered as a journey, not the coordinates but sorrow is the loadstar. In line with this, Kara’s multidimentional, innovative and profound narratives that are put forth in his book motivate us to write. Moreover, the east-west distinction that is presented differently from the premises in his book, is the focal point of the study. In this article, first the general orientalist arguments are studied, then, the profound investigation in terms of the perception of east-west, pure and rational reason is determined as a method of this study. In the conclusion, the

Bourgeois media literacy as a historical category

    Dağtaş, Erdal; Okuroğlu, M. Selahattin

Decisive for this study, the literature review is aimed at describing the competencies of readers in public spaces to transform newspaper contents, with the examples especially from Britain through the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. In this framework, the readership concept is a key, briningg together the literature on early era journalism with Jürgen Habermas' conceptualization of public sphere. On the other hand, a latter work of Habermas, Communicative Action Theory, helps to state the historical background of media literacy in the frame of contemporary problems. Thus, the rise of bourgeois media literacy during the enlightenment and the fall of it after industrial capitalism have been explicated on the axis of lifeworld and system duality. The emergence of Occidental modernity as an embodiment of bourgeois worldviews, and its alienation to its Enlightenment ideals as the fragmentation of lifeworld, had been experienced in the same direction. In the context of qualitative methods and descriptive social sciences/hermeneutics, this study purposes a comprehension of a social phenomenon through the historical examples and to examine its conditions of existence in the current era. Evaluation and conclusion based on the literature asserts the potentiality of media literacy to be grounded on a coherent theoratical frame, rather than temporary approaches. Bourgeois media literacy is an expression for self-fulfilling critical literacy competencies born in the public sphere, without any pre-determined education programs. Defining media literacy and any related concepts based on these competencies would be conducive for the development of a theoretical frame and valid educational programs against any challenges of time and place. Beyond their potential of application in education environments, critical media literacy competencies, which individuals would transfer into daily communication practices, have a potential of reconstruction of modernity.

Determining Complexity within the Crowd Movements

    Akpulat, Murat; Ekinci, Murat

The segmentation of the moving and non-moving parts in an image within the crowd analysis studies is a crucial result in terms of understanding the behaviour. However, in many studies carried out, moving areas are assessed as making a set of movement that are similar in terms of location and of acceleration. In this study, what kind of interaction there exists among the people in a high-density crowd movement was studied. Initially, the motion data is represented as trajectories by using the optical flow and particle advection methods. The image is divided into equal hexagons and each area's topological entropy value is determined through Finite Time Braid Entropy (FTBE). This value depends on the complexity of the spiral structure that the trajectories generate throughout the movement and this value shows how much effective it is in the area. Eventually, through the complexity map that was generated, the behaviour of the crowd could be better understood and assessed. Also, in this way, possible abnormal conditions in the area can be predicted by monitoring each region and by setting off from the changes in the values of Braid entropy in time. The method was tested using the high-density crowd movements in the UCF database and results were presented.

Entropy generation of nanofluid flow in a microchannel heat sink

Manay, Eyuphan; Akyürek, Eda Feyza; Sahin, Bayram

Present study aims to investigate the effects of the presence of nano sized TiO2 particles in the base fluid on entropy generation rate in a microchannel heat sink. Pure water was chosen as base fluid, and TiO2 particles were suspended into the pure water in five different particle volume fractions of 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%. Under laminar, steady state flow and constant heat flux boundary conditions, thermal, frictional, total entropy generation rates and entropy generation number ratios of nanofluids were experimentally analyzed in microchannel flow for different channel heights of 200 mm, 300 mm, 400 mm and 500 mm. It was observed that frictional and total entropy generation rates increased as thermal entropy generation rate were decreasing with an increase in particle volume fraction. In microchannel flows, thermal entropy generation could be neglected due to its too low rate smaller than 1.10e-07 in total entropy generation. Higher channel heights caused higher thermal entropy generation rates, and increasing channel height yielded an increase from 30% to 52% in thermal entropy generation. When channel height decreased, an increase of 66%-98% in frictional entropy generation was obtained. Adding TiO2 nanoparticles into the base fluid caused thermal entropy generation to decrease about 1.8%-32.4%, frictional entropy generation to increase about 3.3%-21.6%. (C) 2018 The Authors. Automatic extraction of building boundaries from high resolution images with active contour segmentation

    Akbulut, Z.; Özdemir, S.; Acar, H.; Dihkan, M.; Karsli, F.

Building extraction from remotely sensed images plays an important role in many applications such as updating geographical information system, change detection, urban planning, disaster management and 3D building modeling. Automatic extraction of buildings from aerial images is not an easy task because of background complexity, lighting conditions and vegetation cover that reduces separability or visibility of buildings. As a result, automatic building extraction can be a complex process for computer vision and image processing techniques. In order to overcome this difficulty region-based active contour model was used to automatically detect the boundary of buildings for this study. To extract object boundaries, the model grows or shrinks the initial contour in the image. The main objective of this paper is making active contours algorithm perform without user interaction and to detect automatically initial contours to segment buildings with a software coded in Matlab. This task carried out by morphological operations, band ratio and thresholding methods. In this study, high resolution aerial images with 8 cm ground sampling distance (GSD) were used. Three separate test zones were selected with varying building level of detail on these images. Finally, it was assessed the accuracy of segmented buildings using Correctness, Completeness and Quality metrics by comparing the results images and manually digitized reference image. The proposed approach for building extraction from images was shown to be 98% accurate on buildings with simple geometry and homogeneous roof textures. However accuracy of extracted buildings with heterogeneous roof textures and lighting, and complex geometry is 89%. The results clearly show that automatically calculated initial contour positions work in accordance with the active contour algorithm and easily extraction of the buildings boundaries.

The Impact of Image on Corporate Reputation: The Case Of Giresun Municipality

    Güllüpunar, Hasan; Tekmen, Tuba

The perception of a corporation by its environment is based on the presented conducts, produced service or product, and established communication with the target group in this process. This is the result of active communication between the source and the recipient. At the same time, there are marks of the past and the future in this perception. Both the total perception that has developed based on the interaction between the corporation and target groups for different reasons in the past, and the emotion that this interaction creates in relation to the future affect the outlook on the corporate outputs. Therefore, two types of perception can be defined by the environment of an institution. The first is a perception that is defined by the active communication process based on corporate behaviour, product, or service. The second is a perception that is an important factor in the background of the first perception and at the same time it is related to the past and the future which is affected from the first perception. These are defined in the literature as image and reputation. This study inquires into the effect of the citizens' impressions provided by the municipalities in terms of the president, staff or services on the general perception of the municipalities. In this context, a survey was conducted in Giresun city centre regarding Giresun Municipality. In the research, image factors related to municipality services and the power of representatives of Giresun Municipality based on the president and the staff were determined and then the effect of these factors on Giresun Municipality's general perception was examined. In the study, it was concluded that the image factors are important explanations of the general perception of the municipality and the biggest 'factor on the general perception is the mayor 'factor.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURE ON TOURISM IN THE MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES

Artan, Seyfettin; Hayaloglu, Pinar; Demirel, Selim Koray

Institutional economics literature suggests that inclusive institutions encourage economic growth by increasing efficiency in many sectors of the economy. Institutional structure also has effects on the tourism sector due to the confidential environment and incentives it brings. In this context, when studies on determinants of tourism are examined, it is remarkable that there are a number of studies on economic and social factors, but that there are limited studies about institutional determinants of tourism. This study investigates the causal relationships between institutional factors and tourism sector in nine Mediterranean coastal countries also including Turkey for the period of 1995-2015 by using Konya (2006) panel causality analysis. The results of the study using variables of corruption and democratic accountability as indicative of institutional structure reveal causal relations between tourism expenditures and institutional factors.

Detection of foot bone anomaly using medical photogrammetry

    Reis, Catal H.

Photogrammetry has been used for medical diagnostic and treatment. Mostly used medical photogrammetric techniques are Ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images. CT and MRI are the most effective method for the early detection of foot and ankle anomaly. Researchers have been developing various methods to detect anomaly. Many image segmentation techniques are available in the literature. Computer Aided Diagnosing (CAD) system has been proposed in this study for detection of foot bone anomaly by the analysis of CT images. In this study, a segmentation based on edge detection method is proposed for the classification of anomaly in foot CT images. Edge detection algorithms are the most commonly used techniques in image processing for edge detection. Canny edge detector is evaluated in this study. In this study, .dicom medical image standard format and ten male patient's foot CT images (245 images and 50 test data) are used. The used parameters are detector collimation of 64 mm, scanning thickness of 1-5 mm, and pixel sizes of 512x512 in radiometric resolution of 16 bits' gray levels. The proposed method consists of five major steps: (i) calculating the horizontal & vertical gradient, (ii) determining gradient magnitude and gradient direction, (iii) applying non-maximal suppression, (iv) computing high and low thresholds, (v) hysteresis thresholding are applied to the multi-detector computed tomography to detect the bone anomaly. In this study, automatic edge-based digital image processing techniques are applied to detect of foot bone anomaly. The proposed canny segmentation method enables users segment anomaly in MDCT of foot very quickly and efficiently. The results demonstrate that the proposed segmentation method is effective for segmenting anomaly. The proposed method obtains satisfactory performances in terms of accuracy and F-measure the area under Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (ROC curve (AUC)). The proposed segmentation method achieves an accuracy of 0.86 and F-measure of 0.92, respectively. The purpose of our study is to detect the anomaly of the foot and it was the simplest and less time consuming process.

EMPIRICAL RELATIONS AMONG THE PARAMETERS ASSOCIATED WITH EARTHQUAKE RUPTURE MECHANISMS FOR IRANIAN EARTHQUAKES

Öztürk, Serkan; Ghassemi, Mohammad Reza; Sari, Mahmut

In this study, we aimed to derive the new and more reliable empirical relationships among different seismic parameters associated with the earthquake rupture mechanisms for Iranian earthquakes. For this purpose, we firstly converted the surface wave magnitudes into moment magnitudes in order to prepare a uniform earthquake dataset. Thereafter, we estimated the empirical relationships between moment magnitude and surface rupture length, moment magnitude and maximum displacement, and surface rupture length and maximum displacement. These linear empirical equations were obtained by orthogonal regression and the goodness of fits were discussed in terms of the correlation coefficients. The results obtained by the orthogonal regression in this paper are compared with the results obtained by the least square method in the literature. The present study confirms that representations of statistical correlations among different earthquake faulting parameters can be given more clear and straightforward by the orthogonal regression as compared to the least square method. In addition, such kind of relationships may provide some significant insights for the calculation of the maximum surface rupture length, maximum surface displacement, and associated maximum credible earthquakes for different seismotectonic regions of Iran as well as the estimation of earthquake magnitudes in paleoseismological studies.

Investigation Of Mechanical And Physical Properties of Concrete Produced to Lead-Zinc Mining Waste Rocks

    Çullu, Mustafa

The purpose of this study is to investigate the physical and mechanical properties of concrete produced from lead-zinc mine waste (tallow) products. In this context, the physical chemical, mineralogical and petrography characteristics of rocks obtained from zinc-lead mine were analyzed first. Concrete strength classes of C16/20, C25/30 and C35/45 5 replaced with 25%, 50% and 75% rates of limestone were prepared with lead mine waste. The physical and mechanical properties of the prepared concrete samples were determined. As a result, when lead-zinc mine waste is used as concrete aggregate, while the porosity and the water absorption of prepared samples were decreased, the physical density were increased as compared to limestone. As the result of the positive effect of physical properties, compressive and tensile strength were increased.

Suffixes -(I)p /-(U)p and Their Functions in Turkmen Turkish

    Gökçür, Uyesi Engin

Suffixes -(I)p and -(U)p have been used as verbal adverb suffixes during the historical development of Turkish language. When these suffixes are added, verbs modify the central meaning in terms of 'situation, time and style.' Therefore, they are used instead of the verbal adverb suffix (- arak), not used in Turkmen Turkish, that is used to refer to situation and style. These suffixes mostly form verbal adverbs stating situation and style with their function mentioned above in Turkmen Turkish. Besides, when they are added to verbs, they form descriptive verbs by attaching verbs to auxiliary verbs. In this case, it has been seen that they take role in the formation of descriptive verbs that refer to sufficiency, quickness, duration, process, ending and starting. As these suffixes have the function of attaching completed conclusions to another conclusion, they have lost their verbal adverb function in time in Azerbaijani Turkish as in Turkmen Turkish and have been used as past perfect tense. These suffixes are used especially in second-person singular and plural in past perfect form in Turkmen Turkish. They are used in the form of past perfect tense when followed by the (- dir) affix.

Earthquake Performance of Reinforced-Concrete Shear-Wall Structure Using Nonlinear Methods

Çavdar, Ozlem; Çavdar, Ahmet; Bayraktar, Ender

In earthquake engineering, the performance-based design method is used to determine the expected performance level of structures under an earthquake effect. The level of performance is related to the damage situation that could occur in the structure after the earthquake. In performance-based structural design, it is predicted that more than one damage level can emerge under one earthquake effect. In this study, the seismic behavior of a reinforced-concrete shear-wall building that collapsed during the 2003 Bingol earthquake was investigated by nonlinear static analysis and nonlinear dynamic analysis. The selected reinforced-concrete shear-wall structure is located in Bingol, Turkey. Local code was considered for assessing a seismic performance evaluation of the selected reinforced-concrete shear-wall building. The performance goals of the reinforced-concrete shear-wall structure were evaluated by applying the pushover (incremental equivalent earthquake load) method and procedures of the code and nonlinear dynamic analysis. According to the code, the reinforced-concrete shear-wall building was not expected to satisfy life safety performance levels under a design earthquake. In this study, one collapsed building was selected in order to test the reliability and usability of performance analysis methods under different earthquakes.

Old Concepts, New Contents: The City, Cinema and the Stranger

    Demir, Sertac Timur

This study is a cinematic portrait not of the real, but essentially of the updated Istanbul. In the case of the strangers of cinematic Istanbul, the most strategic, useful, as well as the most difficult step for updating the city's image is to shift the axis from its centres, touristic places, familiar characters, common values and usual events to its corners, secondary places and characters, minimalist conditions, ambivalent values and current changes. For this purpose this study analyzes five films as sociological testimonies without touching upon their details but by focusing on their references: Politiki Kouzina/Bir Tutam Baharat/A Touch of Spice (Tassos Boulmetis, 2003), Koprudekiler/Men on the Bridge (Asli Ozge, 2009), Kac Para Kac/A Run for Money (Reha Erdem, 1999), Uzak/Distant (Nuri Bilge Ceylan, 2002), and 11'e 10 Kala/10 to 11 (Pelin Esmer, 2009). These films, which constitute the framework of this research, are breaking points of modern Istanbul's social and urban history and of changing form of strangers.
