Effect of individual characteristics, risk perception, self-efficacy and social support on willingness to relocate due to floods and landslides

    Mızrak, Sefa; Turan, Melikşah

People may have to leave their home, environment, region and country because of disasters or disaster risks. Effective and efficient disaster risk reduction activities involving the community can reduce disaster risks and enable people to reside more safely and peacefully in their environment. The objective of this study was to investigate whether individual characteristics, risk perception, self-efficacy and perceived social support were correlated with the willingness to relocate due to floods and landslides. The data were collected from 947 people residing in Gümüşhane Province (Türkiye) using a survey. In the study, a total of ten models were tested with the help of ordinal logistic regression analysis. Consequently, the participants' willingness to relocate due to landslides was determined to be higher than the willingness to relocate due to floods. University students and people with chronic diseases and flood and landslide experiences had a greater willingness to relocate. Residence duration and informal social support were negatively correlated with relocation willingness. Those who believed that they could protect themselves in the event of a flood and landslide were more likely to relocate. Among risk perceptions, probability increased relocation willingness mostly due to floods, while fear increased relocation willingness mostly due to landslides. This study attempted to provide policy makers and scientists insight into disaster risk reduction and disaster risk communication related to relocation.

Determination of shear behavior of magneto-rheological elastomers under harmonic loading

    Mazlum, Ugur; Celik, Ilhan

Magneto-rheological (MR) materials can respond reversibly and quickly under the effect of an external magnetic field. MR materials contain micron-sized iron particles. These iron particles are typically dispersed in an elastomer or a liquid. These materials due to their properties constitute a kind of smart material in terms of engineering material. Such materials are used as isolators in various engineering applications, structures, and sound control subsystems. This study aimed to determine the mechanical properties for shear behavior of MR materials for under harmonic loading. Parameters such as matrix materials with different hardness values, powder types, magnetic field, frequency, and deformation were studied. The parameters related to the MR material itself were analyzed with the obtained data. The present study reveals that considering the sensitivity to magnetic field parameter, composite materials having the most suitable properties were produced with Shore 2 hardness value and SQ magnetic powder. It had been observed on increase about 200% at the rate of Shore A10 and A2 as a result of comparing the hardness scale. Also according to the powder rate while there was an increase on worth effect of relative MR, it is seen that the biggest increase had been in SQ powder with 199% worth. When looked some studies in literature, about comparing different hardness values such as matrix materials powder types etc. there aren’t any studies. The state of magnetic field thinks that features such as MR effect, Storage, and Loss modulus haven’t been examined yet.

Optimum tuned tandem mass dampers for suppressing seismic-induced vibrations considering soil-structure interaction

    Araz, Onur; Noroozinejad Farsangi, Ehsan

In recent studies, it has been stated that tuned tandem mass dampers (TTMD) will be a practical mechanical solution to reduce the dynamic responses of structures under seismic excitations. However, since TTMD is tuned based on the dominant frequency of the superstructure, ignoring the soil-structure interaction (SSI), it may cause a notable deterioration in the control performance of the control devices. Thus, a methodology for the optimum design of TTMD positioned on the top story of a high-rise building due to near-fault pulse-like ground motions considering potential SSI effects has been investigated in this paper. Firstly, the TTMD is located on the top story of a well-known 40-story shear building, and the equations of motion for soil-structure-TTMD interaction are derived. Based on the sequential quadratic programming (SQP), the tuning parameters of TTMD are then found for different support conditions in the frequency domain. The efficiency of SQP is also compared with two meta-heuristic algorithms (i.e., simulated annealing and pattern search algorithms). The effectiveness of optimum TTMD is tested using 30 near-fault pulse-like ground motions using time-domain analyses. Numerical results showed that the optimum TTMD is more effective in suppressing the maximum displacement and inter-story drift of the building, considering SSI. It is also found that the frequency content of the earthquake, as well as the pulse period of the earthquake and soil type, has a significant effect on the control performance of the TTMD.

Tor topography in Giresun mountains, Türkiye

Uzun, Ali; Aylar, Faruk; Zeybek, Halil İbrahim; Alemdağ, Selçuk

Tors are mound-like rock landforms, resistant to erosion, that may sometimes reach the size of several storeys of house by volume. They may develop in different climate regions and different rock types, led by granitic rocks. In this study, tors developed in granitic rocks around Yaylalı village linked to Kürtün county in Gümüşhane were investigated. The study area is located in the eastern part of the Giresun mountain range in northeastern Turkey, 2000–2300 m above sea level. The aim of the study is to determine the natural environmental characteristics in tor formation and to reveal the effect of bedrock on tor formation. During field studies, 18 tors were selected by noting location, size and structural features, and dimensions were measured. Thin sections were first made from the rock samples taken from the tors and then the mineralogical composition was investigated by modal analysis method. As a result of this analysis, it was determined that the bedrock forming the tors is granite. During the field observations, it was determined that the intersecting vertical joints supported the formation of castle-like tors, while the horizontal joints supported the formation of pita pile-shaped tors. There are also pseudokarstic shapes resembling kamenitza and karst pavement. In conclusion, joint sets causing local resistance differences directed the formation of tors, while excess slope affected surface erosion and suitability of climate conditions-controlled weathering rate.

Comparison of online and face-to-face exams conducted in Physics I course in higher education

Ural, Mustafa Nuri; Takaoğlu, Zeynep Başkan

The coronavirus pandemic has affected most fields, including education, and most lessons have had to be conducted as distance education. In this study, it is aimed to compare student success in face-to-face exams with that in distance exams in the Physics I course. The sample consisted of 167 students who took a multiple-choice exam in distance education in the 2020-2021 academic year and 155 students who took the multiple-choice exam in face-to-face education in the 2019-2020 academic year. In the first phase of the study, the questions asked in both types of exams were classified according to Bloom’s taxonomy, and then descriptive and comparative statistics were used. As a result, according to Bloom’s taxonomy, the majority of the questions asked were at the application level. In the statistical analysis, it was determined that the averages of both groups were close to 45 out of 100, and there was no significant difference between the group averages as a result of the t-test. Accordingly, it has been concluded that the use of online exams during the pandemic as an alternative to face-toface exams in normal processes will not make a significant difference.

Sultan's Law and Islamic Sharia in The Ottoman Empire Court: An Analysis of The Existence of Secular Law

Fatarib, Husnul; Meirison; Saharuddin, Desmadi; Bahar, Muchlis; Karimullah, Suud Sarim

This article aims to describe the impact of legal dualism within the Ottoman Empire. After Constantinople was taken over, Sultan Muhammad Al-Fatih instituted a significant policy, including issuing laws and regulations for the benefit of society; then, there was also a dualism system within the Ottoman Empire, which was visible during the reign of Sultan Sulaiman I. During this time, foreign nationals were mainly recruited, and foreign traders began to gain impunity at the peak of power. This then prompted several questions, such as were the sultans free to create the laws they wanted, or was Islamic law still binding on them? Was Sultan's law an innovation from the Ottoman Empire or a legacy from the preceding dynasty in the form of Capitulation? To address those issues, the authors conducted a comparative historical analysis of various types of literature. We used a descriptive qualitative approach to Qānūn's position, which served as a springboard for foreign intervention in an Empire that was strong but weak in political policies which occasionally strayed outside the corridor of Islamic Sharia which had become customary and national culture. The tolerance separated from the corridors of Islam derailed during the crisis. This became a springboard for legal dualism in a state body with integrity in various dimensions.

The Nexus between Institutional Quality and Inflation in Emerging Markets: A Panel Causality Test with a Fourier Function

    Cicen, Yildirim Beyazit

It is important to note that institutional quality has a substantial impact on a country's long-term economic growth, which influences other economic indicators, such as inflation and monetary policy. An indepth examination of the existence of this crucial relationship was conducted by applying a novel and robust panel Yilanci-Gorus Fourier causality test between 2000 and 2019 to 24 developing countries, in order to detect this relationship. A recent inflation rate, the standard deviation of inflation, and sound money are all interconnected and mutually causally related to property rights and the quality of the legal system. Weakness in institutions can exacerbate financial shocks, thereby affecting monetary indicators, and monetary policies will deteriorate the quality of the institution as a result.

Correlation coefficients of simplified neutrosophic multiplicative sets and their applications in clustering analysis

    Köseoğlu, Ali; Şahin, Rıdvan

The use of fuzzy sets, intuitionistic fuzzy sets and neutrosophic sets can often handle with real-life problems that contain incomplete and uncertain information. The 0–1 scale is used to deal with such information which is graded symmetrically and uniformly but, some problems consist of unsymmetrical and non-uniform information. Although intuitionistic multiplicative set (IMS) is a powerful tool to deal with this kind of problems, due to the dependence of hesitant information to the membership and non-membership functions in IMS, it brings a restriction to decision-makers while working on the real-life problems such as applications of correlation coefficients and clustering. In this study, we propose novel correlation coefficients (CCs) of simplified neutrosophic multiplicative sets (SNMSs) which is defined recently by removing the shortages of IMSs. Firstly, we give SNMS-based operations, fulfil the deficiencies in the theoretical background of IMS and establish a theoretical structure for the SNMS. Then, we propose novel correlation coefficients (CC) of SNMS and show some of their important properties. Finally, we apply the CCs to a clustering problem to confirm the efficiency of the proposed SNMS and its correlation coefficients.

Calculation of the Effects of Silver (Ag) Dopant on Radiation Shielding Efficiency of BiPbSrCaCuO Superconductor Ceramics Using EGS4 Code

    Kaya, Selim

In the current study, the effects of silver (Ag) additive on the radiation shielding efficiency of BiPbSrCaCuO superconducting ceramics was calculated using the EGS4 code and discussed theoretically by comparison with XCOM data. The mass attenuation coefficients (µ/ρ) for BiPbSrCaCuO superconductor ceramics and their contents were investigated theoretically (WinXcom and EGS4) at gamma-ray energies ranging from 59.5 to 1332 keV. The theoretical values were computed in the energy range from 1 keV to 100 MeV using the WinXcom program. Then, using the mass attenuation coefficients, some shielding parameters were determined, such as the mean free path (MFP), the half value layer (HVL), the effective atomic number (Zeff), the radiation protection efficiency (RPE), the macroscopic fast neutron removal cross-sections (ΣR, cm−1) and the gamma-ray kerma coefficients ((Formula presented.)). Theoretically, the results obtained with XCOM and EGS-4 were found to be in good agreement. The radiation shielding efficiency (RPE), neutron removal cross-section (ΣR, cm−1), maximum and semi-valent layer (HVL), and mean free path (MFP) values were found to be smaller for BiPbSrCaCuO superconducting ceramics as the silver (Ag) contribution was increased. Data from this study can guide further research and development of shielding materials for gamma-ray and neutron shielding.

Investigation of changes in geomechanical properties of sandstones under different saturation and anisotropy conditions: Example from Gümüşhane (NE Türkiye); [Farklı doygunluk ve anizotropi koşullarında kumtaşlarının jeomekanik özelliklerindeki değişimlerin incelenmesi: Gümüşhane örneği (KD Türkiye)]

    Gültekin, Zarife; Dağ, Serhat

gIn this study the changes in various geomechanical properties were studied for sandstones cropped out at the Mescitli region of the Gümüşhane city under different saturation and anisotropy conditions. For this purpose, 225 specimens were prepared considering the lamination planes of those were chosen to have orientation of 0, 30, 45, 60 and 90° relative to loading direction. Index properties of the sandstones such as dry unit weight (dryg), saturated unit weight (sat), water absorption by weight (Aw) and water absorption by volume (Av) were assigned. In accordance with the objective of study P wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength and indirect tensile strength values were determined based on different saturation and anisotropy conditions. It was noted as a result of the observations carried out that specimens parallel to lamination have higher wave velocities in general when compared with specimens that are perpendicular to lamination planes. While uniaxial compressive strength values for sandstones are high for specimens which are parallel and perpendicular to lamination, the lowest strength value was observed in specimens with an anisotropy angle of 30°. In addition, it was also observed that the strength values decrease at a significant level with increasing saturation conditions. Strength anisotropy ratio (RUCS) for sandstones varies between 1.28–1.49 based on different saturation conditions. Similarly, while indirect tensile strength values were higher in specimens that were parallel and perpendicular to lamination, they were lower for other anisotropy orientations. Indirect tensile strength values also decreased with increasing degree of saturation.

Evaluation of moral sensitivity and moral courage in intensive care nurses in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic

Goktas, Sonay; Aktug, Cemile; Gezginci, Elif

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, intensive care nurses may experience ethical issues related to fear of transmission, limited resources, and increased workload. Nurses' moral sensitivity and courage may have a role in dealing with these problems. Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess intensive care nurses' moral sensitivity and moral courage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: Descriptive cross-sectional survey. Methods: A total of 362 nurses working in the intensive care units of pandemic hospitals in Turkey participated in the study between January and March 2021. Data were obtained using a personal information form, the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire, and the Nurses' Moral Courage Scale. A link to the online data collection tools was sent to the management of participating institutions, who forwarded it to nurses. Reporting followed the CHERRIES guidelines. Results: In this study, the response rate of nurses was 89%. The nurses' total mean moral sensitivity score was 90.70 ± 28.89 and their mean moral courage score was 82.08 ± 13.51. A weak inverse correlation was found between the nurses' moral sensitivity and moral courage scores (r = −.176, p =.001). Total moral sensitivity score differed significantly according to years of Intensive care unit (ICU) experience (p =.007). Total moral courage scores increased significantly with education level (p =.012), years of nursing experience (p =.016), and willingness to work in the ICU (p <.001). Conclusion: The study suggests that nurses working in the intensive care unit during the pandemic had moderate moral sensitivity and high levels of moral courage. Nurses' sociodemographic characteristics and ICU work conditions may affect their moral sensitivity and moral courage. Relevance to Clinical Practice: The results of this study can help guide efforts to improve moral courage and sensitivity and address ethical issues among ICU nurses.

Trend analysis of precipitation using innovative approaches in northwestern Turkey

Körük, Ali Emre; Kankal, Murat; Yıldız, Mehmet Berkant; Akçay, Fatma; Şan, Murat; Nacar, Sinan

Precipitation is highly sensitive to climate change, and monitoring its trends over time is essential for understanding the effects of global warming on the Earth's water cycle. This study investigates the effects of climate change on monthly precipitation in the Susurluk Basin located in northwestern Turkey, using innovative trend analysis methods. Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis (IPTA) using star graphics and Improved Visualization for Innovative Trend Analysis (IV-ITA) techniques were used to analyze precipitation data from nine stations in the basin over 50 years (1970–2019), and the findings were compared to classical Mann-Kendall (MK) results. According to the trend analysis results, the MK method detected significant trends in only two months in the decreasing direction. In these decreasing trends observed at Simav and Keles stations in November, z values were calculated as −2.38 and −2.05, respectively. IPTA method detected increasing trends in 54 months and decreasing trends in 40 months; this means there is a change of more than 5% between two half series. The IV-ITA method indicated an increase of more than 40% in the low values for January, March, August, and September. In addition, there was an increasing trend of more than 40% in the high values observed in September at all stations. It was observed that mean precipitation heights increased from September to December and then decreased throughout the basin. It is predicted that decreases in precipitation during dry seasons may put intense pressure on agricultural water use and affect water quality. In addition, the increase in precipitation in spring months may increase flood events. It was determined that graphical innovative trend analysis methods are more effective in trend identification than MK, and these methods' results have much higher visual inspection and linguistic interpretation possibilities. Innovative methods allow for more flexible and in-depth analysis using different statistical parameters.

A comparative study of evolutionary computation and swarm-based methods applied to color quantization

    Pérez-Delgado, María-Luisa; Günen, Mehmet Akif

Color Quantization (CQ) is a complex and hard problem because selecting the best set of colors from many available colors and using that set to obtain a good quality image is an NP-complete problem. The use of evolutionary computation and swarm-based methods to solve search and optimization problems has increased dramatically in recent years. This article compares some of these methods in order to solve the CQ problem. The following methods were used to generate CQ images: Particle swarm optimization, Artificial bee colony, Adaptive differential evolution, Success-history based adaptive differential evolution (with and without linear population size reduction), Cuckoo search, Firefly algorithm and Shuffled-frog leaping algorithm. For the first two methods, two variants were considered. Thus, a total of ten metaheuristics were compared with four classical CQ methods (Variance-based, Median-cut, Binary splitting and Wu's methods) applying them to a set of benchmark images and considering four different palette sizes (32, 64, 128, and 256 colors). Three error measures were considered to compare the methods: the mean squared error, the mean absolute error and the peak signal-to-noise ratio. Some of the swarm-based methods analyzed include a recently proposed CQ method using ants. Although they have a slow computational speed in the experimental studies, the ant-based methods are significantly better than all other methods according to the Wilcoxon signed rank test. In general, despite their speed, classical methods underperform the other ten methods both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Comparison of the removal efficiencies of Basic red 46 from aqueous solutiousing Aşkale lignite with and without ultrasound assisted processes

Karaca, Canan; Karaca, Melike; Kıranşan, Murat; Karaca, Semra; Açışlı, Özkan; Gürses, Ahmet

This study compared the removal efficiencies of Basic red 46 from aqueous solutions with and without ultrasound-assisted processes using lignite as a low-cost adsorbent. The effects of various experimental parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial solution, pH, initial dye concentration and temperature on the dye removal efficiency were investigated. The experimental results were modelled by the kinetic and isotherm models. Both of processes fitted well to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model with highest correlation coefficients for all of three temperatures. The results showed that the influence parameters have a different effect on the removal efficiency in the presence and absence of ultrasonic irradiation. When the results obtained for both processes are compared, it is seen that the removal efficiency obtained with the ultrasound assisted process is much higher than that obtained with non-ultrasound assisted process at high dye concentrations. The removal efficiency of ultrasound-assisted and unassisted processes was found to be 81.5% and 54.6%, respectively, at 80 mg/L dye concentration and 60 min. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic. The enthalpy and entropy changes for the ultrasound-assisted process were –9.35 kJ/mol and –0.03 kJ/K·mol, respectively.

Investigation of Behavior on Solutions of Lane-Emden Complex Differential Equations by a Random Differential Transformation Method

Merdan, Mehmet; Merdan, Merve; Şahin, Ridvan

In this study, Lane-Emden complex differential equations have been randomized by selecting random variables for the coefficients, initial conditions, and force functions of complex differential equations. In addition, by finding the solutions of the obtained random complex differential equations, the probability characteristics of the solutions are examined. The random version of the differential transformation method (DTM) is used to obtain an analytical solution close to the solution of the random differential equation. Approximate expected values and variances are calculated using the approximate solution method. The solutions of some random complex differential equations obtained by using random probability characteristics with gamma, normal, and beta distributions were obtained by the DTM method. The probability characteristics obtained are shown graphically with the help of the MAPLE program.

An evaluation of the characteristic aftershock parameters following the 24 January 2020 MW = 6.8 Elazığ-Sivrice (Türkiye) earthquake

    Öztürk, Serkan

A comprehensive evaluation of region-time-magnitude behaviours of aftershocks following the 24 January 2020 (Mw = 6.8) Elazığ-Sivrice (Türkiye) earthquake was achieved by using the characteristic parameters such as b-value, p-value, Dc-value and Mamax value of aftershock occurrences. The b-value was calculated as 0.82 ± 0.02 by considering the magnitude of the completeness value as Mcomp = 1.9, and it is relatively small compared to typical b ≈ 1 for the magnitude-frequency relationship of aftershocks. This low b-value may also be caused by the abundance of aftershocks with ML ≥ 4.0. The p-value was computed as 0.80 ± 0.02 with c-value = 0.279 ± 0.098 and is smaller than the global value of p ≈ 1. This low p-value may be due to a relatively slow decay rate of aftershock activity, and the modified Omori model seems appropriate for the estimation of decay parameters. The Dc-value was estimated as 1.87 ± 0.07. This large value shows that aftershocks are homogeneously distributed and more clustered at larger scales/in smaller areas. The temporal variation of b-value indicates that decreases in b-value may result from the gradual increase in the effective stress following the larger aftershocks. The lowest b-values and Mamax values greater than 5.0 were observed in the north, south and southwest parts of the mainshock including Pütürge and Erkenek segments. These results show that there is an apparent relation between the smallest b-values and the largest Mamax values. The largest p-values were estimated in and around the main shock including Pütürge segment. The regions with the smallest b-value and the largest p-value have high stress and coseismic deformation, respectively. Stress variations and coseismic deformation are extremely effective on the changes of b-and p-values. As a remarkable result, aftershock hazard following the mainshock may be considered extremely related to aftershock parameters, and detailed analyses of the region-time-magnitude characteristics of aftershocks are recommended for a preliminary evaluation following the mainshock.

Coating of the metal surface for different fields such as corrosion resistance, hydrophobic surface, and conductivity properties enhance the material quality for different application. Furthermore, controlling the morphological structures and the size of the coating materials is one of the most important factors for designing their functionality. The new approaches to the effect of surface properties at the atomic level on bacterial adhesion offer new perspectives on this subject. In this study, the effect of the different current densities on the morphological microstructural features, microhardness properties, and bacterial attachment behavior of the protective aluminum oxide layer was investigated by using different analytical and instrumental methods. The Staphylococcus aureus was used as a model bacteria for attachment tests. The result presented in the current study exhibited that the crystal morphology, microhardness, and bacterial adhesion features have changed depending on the applied current density. Increasing the current density from 1.5 to 1.7 raises the microhardness from 88 to 126 (Vickers) and causes higher surface roughness by 56 nm, 114 nm and 124 nm respectively. The high number of the attached bacteria were determined on the more roughness surface during the study.
