The effect of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on anxiety levels and attitudes towards e-learning among sports sciences students

    Türker, Ustun; Bostanci, Ozgur

Background and Study Aim The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant changes in education and teaching processes, particularly affecting application-based disciplines such as sports science. This study aimed to examine the relationship between COVID-19-related anxiety and attitudes toward e-learning among sports sciences students. Material and Methods The study was conducted using a cross-sectional design with 2,479 students from 14 state universities in Turkey. Data were collected using the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) and the Test of E-Learning Related Attitudes Scale (TELRA), and responses were gathered through online surveys. Parametric statistical analyses (t-test, correlation) were performed using SPSS at a significance level of p<0.05. Results Anxiety associated with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic led to significant changes in the e-learning attitudes of sports sciences students. Students with higher levels of anxiety exhibited stronger tendencies toward technology use and perceived usefulness, whereas only limited differences were noted in satisfaction and motivation. Female students reported higher levels of symptoms and anxiety, while those who engaged in regular exercise demonstrated lower anxiety levels. Interestingly, within the high-anxiety group, students who did not regularly participate in exercise displayed more favorable e-learning attitudes. These findings suggest that anxiety may strengthen the inclination toward digital learning; however, this tendency does not always align with motivational commitment. Conclusions The e-learning attitudes of sports sciences students during the pandemic were influenced by factors such as technological competence, psychological state, gender, exercise habits, and the requirements of practical courses. The findings highlight the importance of designing hybrid and flexible learning models in times of crisis, in a manner that integrates psychological support with pedagogical needs.

Economic vulnerability amidst contagion: analyzing unemployment via Covid-19-induced transaction costs

    Cicen, Yildirim Beyazit

This study delves into the pandemic's influence on unemployment rates, employing the concept of transaction costs. Given the virus's infectious nature, each transaction carries the risk of infection. In this study, Covid-19-induced transaction costs were utilized to gauge the pandemic's impact on unemployment rates. Seven developed countries and seven developing countries were separately scrutinized for this purpose. According to the outcomes of Yilanci and Gorus' (2020) panel causality test, Covid-19-induced transaction costs did not influence unemployment rates in developed countries. However, they significantly impacted unemployment rates in developing countries. These findings underscore the resource gap between developed and developing nations in tackling pandemic-related challenges. Policymakers should consider these economic disparities when devising strategies to alleviate the pandemic's effects.

THE IMPACT OF UNCERTAINTY IN GLOBAL GOLD AND OIL PRICES ON STOCK MARKET INDEX RETURNS: THE CASE OF THE MIST COUNTRIES

Pala, Fahrettin; Görgün, Mehmet Ragip; Torusdag, Mustafa; Demirtas, Furkan; Barut, Abdulkadir

The current study explores the impact of global gold price uncertainty on the stock markets of the MIST countries: Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, and T & uuml;rkiye. The study examined the crisis periods that started with the COVID-19 pandemic and continued with the Russia-Ukraine war, which caused uncertainty in gold and oil prices. Based on this, the study's data set consists of the daily closing prices between March 11th, 2020, and January 31st, 2023. The obtained data were analyzed using the Least Squares (ICC) and panel quantile regression (PQR) methods. There is a significant positive correlation between oil prices and oil volatility index with stock prices for the economies of T & uuml;rkiye, Indonesia, and Mexico, and a significant negative correlation between gold prices and gold volatility index with stock prices for developing countries. There is also a significant positive relationship between gold and oil prices and stock prices for the developed country, South Korea's economy. A significant negative correlation has also been proposed between gold and oil volatility indices and South Korean stock prices. This study provides a novel contribution to the literature by examining the impact of simultaneous global crises namely the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war-on the stock market indices of MIST countries through the lens of uncertainty in both gold and oil markets. While most existing studies focus on a single commodity or analyze crises in isolation, this research distinguishes itself by investigating the combined effects of two major global shocks and incorporating both price and volatility-based uncertainty indicators. The findings suggest that policymakers should develop country-specific and differentiated financial stability policies by taking into account the uncertainties in gold and oil markets during crisis periods.

EVALUATION OF UNMET HEALTH NEEDS IN EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES: 2020-2021; [Évaluation des besoins de santé non satisfaits dans les pays de l’Union européenne: 2020-2021]

    Köse, Aslı

The objective of the study. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of unmet health needs in European Union countries on Healthy Life Expectancy in 2020-2021 and determine the grouping of countries in this period. Material and methods. The study used unmet health needs data from the Eurostat database. Two models were created by path analysis using structural equation modeling. The impact of unmet health needs on life expectancy in 2020-2021 was evaluated. The cluster analysis grouped the European Union countries according to their unmet health needs. Results. The primary factor with the highest average contributing to unmet health needs in 2020-2021 was the absence of a requirement to report health issues. Among the reasons for postponing health needs in 2020-2021, the criterion of “absence of specialists” was determined to be the criterion with the lowest average. According to the cluster analysis, the most similar countries are the Netherlands and Austria, Albania and Serbia, while the least similar are Bulgaria and Belgium, Estonia and Belgium. Conclusions. During the pandemic, individuals gave up receiving health services due to their fear of catching COVID-19. It has been determined that unmet health needs did not affect life expectancy for 2020. In 2021, there was a statistically significant relationship between the “no need to report” unmet health need criterion and Healthy Life Year Expectancy. This study determined the “expensive, remote and transportation” criterion, which has the second highest average among the reasons for unmet health needs.

Financial Wellbeing during Covid-19 Pandemic: Concerns about Medical Costs; [Covid-19 Salgını Sırasında Finansal Refah: Tıbbi Maliyetlerle İlgili Endişeler]

    Kocağ, Esra Karapinar

Financial wellbeing which represents a great concern for individuals regardless of their social status or their current employment situation constitutes an important element of overall individual wellbeing. Within a broader structure of financial wellbeing, concerns about medical costs have gained a vital importance particularly following the pandemic. Identifying what factors influence this growing concern is critical to tackle with the problem and improve individual wellbeing. Hence, this study is expected to shed light on such an important individual and national concern. To that end, this paper utilizes Global Financial Inclusion Database which is based on national representative surveys of about 128,000 adults across more than 120 countries. Empirical analysis in which ordered probit model was applied aims to investigate if there exists an association between financial concerns about medical costs and COVID-19. Findings of the empirical investigation reveal that being in the group of those who are very worried about financial hardship due to Covid-19 outbreak increases the probability of reporting being very worried about medical cost payments by about 34.5 percentage points. Therefore, it is seen that pandemic detrimentally related to individuals’ increased concerns over medical costs. These findings are expected to guide policy makers on the management of healthcare system and measures to improve individual wellbeing.

Long distance relationship with workplace: Remote work and workplace spirituality

    Demirbağ, Kübra Şimşek

In this study, workplace spirituality is discussed in the context of remote work and the COVID-19 pandemic. First, the focus is on the changes in the meaning and function of employees in the organization during the evolutionary process of industrialization and management paradigms. Afterward, conceptual frameworks for spirituality and workplace spirituality are presented, and in the last section, academic studies that deal with workplace spirituality with distance or hybrid work arrangements are included. Early studies offer insights and recommendations on conceptualizing, developing, and managing workplace spirituality. They all emphasize that spirituality is necessary for remote work as a tool to overcome stress and mental health problems and increase employee well-being. Unfortunately, the remote work and workplace spirituality literature is relatively narrow and needs to be expanded.

    Şahin, Ceyda Uzun; Kulakaç, Nurşen

As in the whole world, the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic poses many threats to healthcare workers in our country too, which leads to anxiety in healthcare workers. This study was conducted to explore the anxiety levels of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study is a cross-sectional study. The population consisted of health care workers employed in hospitals in seven regions in Turkey. All volunteer healthcare workers were included in the study, and 356 healthcare workers responded to the questionnaire. The data were collected using the State Anxiety Inventory and a questionnaire created by the researchers using an online questionnaire between 10 May 2020 and 15 May 2020. In the evaluation of the data, mean, standard deviation, percentages, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis were used. 33% of healthcare workers did not have anxiety, 50% had mild, and 17% had severe anxiety. The anxiety scores of those who were nurses (p < 0.001), who were working in the emergency room (p < 0.001), who were involved in treatment for COVID-19 patients (p = 0.040), who left their homes to prevent transmission to their families and relatives during the pandemic (p = 0.038), and whose working hours had changed (p = 0.036) were found to be significantly higher. It was observed that there was a positive and significant relationship between the fear of death and disease transmission, uncertainty, loneliness, anger, and hopelessness, and anxiety levels in healthcare workers. The main factors that significantly affected the anxiety levels of healthcare workers were male gender, weekly working hours, the presence of chronic diseases, and feelings of anger and uncertainty. In conclusion, during the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers experienced some negative emotions, their anxiety levels increased, and they were psychologically affected. Planning psychosocial interventions for healthcare workers in the high-risk group will make significant contributions to the health system.

The Economic Impacts of Covid-19 on the Forestry Sector: A Case Study in Turkey

    Komut, Osman

The Covid 19 pandemic has led to considerable destruction of social and economic areas at a global level. This study aims to determine the economic impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on the Turkish forestry sector. In this context, 5 years (from 2017 to 2021) of wood-based product sales of an administrative unit, which carries out regional forestry activities in Turkey, were studied. The data concerning the product groups were subjected to a Laspeyres price index analysis based on the base period weight through the price and estimated price increase rate variables. In addition, correlation analysis was utilized to determine the relationships between the determined variables. The findings showed that the Covid 19 pandemic led to decreases in the Laspeyres price index values for the price and estimated price increase rates when compared with the pre-pandemic period, which was different on a product group’s basis. As a result, it can be said that the Covid 19 pandemic process created a considerable potential for a loss of income in wood-based products, which is one of the primary outputs of the forestry sector, and as of 2021, a recovery process has started.
