Salti, Aysun Kazak; Topali, Hasret; Turkmen, Osman Oğulcan

Hemodialysis (HD) patients commonly experience psychological distress and anxiety, which may affect their comfort and satisfaction during treatment. This study examined the overall impact of stress ball use on satisfaction, comfort, and anxiety among individuals receiving HD. A total of 46 patients were randomized between January and July 2025. Three participants in the intervention group withdrew before completing the study; therefore, the final analysis included 43 patients (20 in the stress ball group and 23 in the control group). Data were collected using the Patient Information Form (PIF), Visual Analog Patient Satisfaction Scale (VAPSS), Hemodialysis Comfort Scale (HCS), Distress Thermometer (DT), and Visual Analog Scale for Anxiety (VAS-A). Patients in the intervention group used a stress ball for at least 15 minutes during each of twelve HD sessions. Measurements were obtained at baseline, midpoint, and post-test, while the control group received standard care and was assessed concurrently. The study findings demonstrated that anxiety levels decreased over time in the stress ball group, whereas they increased in the control group. Similarly, distress levels decreased in the stress ball group, while no significant change was observed in the control group. HD comfort scores decreased in the stress ball group but increased in the control group. In contrast, no statistically significant difference was found between the groups in terms of the VAPSS scores. These results highlight the potential value of simple distraction techniques in clinical settings for further improving psychological outcomes.

KAHRIMAN, Ilknur; AKSOY, Bahar; KANDAZ, Ufuk; BORAN, Serpil; GÖGER, Berrin; KIRBAŞ, Zila Özlem

Objectives This study investigated the effect of the puppet-assisted House-Tree-Person Test (HTP-T) on fear and anxiety levels in children undergoing chemotherapy treatment and the factors influencing these outcomes. Methods The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design combined with HTP-T analysis. The study was conducted with 29 children aged 5–12 years receiving chemotherapy at the pediatric hematology-oncology outpatient clinics of a university hospital in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye during the 2022–2024 years. Data were collected using “the Demographic Information Form for Children and Parents, the Children's State Anxiety Scale (CSA), the Children's Fear Scale (CFS), and HTP-T". Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, repeated measures ANOVA, and HTP-T analysis. Results Statistically significant differences were observed in children's mean CSA (F = 3.898, p = 0.026, η2 = 0.122) and CFS (F = 5.313, p = 0.008, η2 = 0.159) scores across the pre-treatment, during-treatment, and post-treatment measurements. The HTP-T analysis revealed that children had difficulty regulating anxiety and fear, expressed concerns about family and environmental events, reported feelings of loneliness, and exhibited strong emotional attachment to their families. Conclusion The study demonstrated that incorporating puppet-assisted HTP-T during chemotherapy contributed to reducing children's fear and anxiety and offered a useful approach for identifying influencing factors. Implications for nursing practice HTP-T, a therapeutic play technique incorporating puppetry and projective methods, may be effective in reducing fear and anxiety among children undergoing chemotherapy.

Validation of the Turkish Fear of War Scale (FOWARS): Psychometric Evidence and Associations with Tolerance of Uncontrollability, Psychological Symptoms, and Personality Traits

    Kaya, Feridun; Türkkan, Tuğba

Growing geopolitical instability has led to increasing concerns about the psychological impact of war beyond directly affected populations, highlighting the need for culturally appropriate instruments to assess fear of war. In this study, we evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Fear of War Scale (FOWARS) and examine its associations with sociodemographic characteristics and personality traits. A total of 643 adults across two independent samples (sample 1 = 360; sample 2 = 283) completed the FOWARS, the Tolerance of Uncontrollability Questionnaire, the Next Big Five Inventory (BFI-2), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), and a sociodemographic information form. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the original two-factor structure of the FOWARS, with the Turkish version demonstrating satisfactory structural validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity, criterion-related validity, strong internal consistency, and measurement invariance across gender. Fear of war was negatively associated with tolerance of uncontrollability and positively associated with depression, anxiety, and stress. In addition, fear of war was significantly associated with gender, socioeconomic status, agreeableness, neuroticism, and conscientiousness. These findings expand the understanding of the individual determinants of fear of war, underscoring the importance of developing targeted interventions for vulnerable populations.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three different music-based interventions on anxiety and fatigue levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis, compared to a concurrent control group receiving standard care. Methods: This randomized controlled trial involved 64 patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis. They were randomly assigned to four equal groups (n = 16 each): live music, live ney sound therapy (using a traditional reed flute known for its soothing, breath-like tones), a music-repeating robotic parrot therapy (an interactive robotic parrot that repeats music or sounds provided by the patient), or a control group (no intervention). The experimental groups received 30-min sessions 3 days per week for 2 months. The “Beck Anxiety Scale” and “Fatigue Severity Scale” were used to measure anxiety and fatigue, respectively. Assessments were performed before the intervention, immediately after the 2-month intervention period, and at 2 months after the end of the intervention period. Results: Before the intervention, there were no significant differences in anxiety or fatigue scores across the four groups (p > 0.05). After the interventions, all three groups exposed to music therapy showed significant reductions in both anxiety and fatigue scores compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: All three therapies were effective in managing anxiety and fatigue symptoms in hemodialysis patients. Among them, music-repeating robotic parrot therapy demonstrated the most superior and longest-lasting effects in reducing both anxiety and fatigue levels. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT07238374.

Coşar, Dilan Aktepe; Ayyıldız, Neşe Işcan; Şimşekli, Derya

Aim This study aimed to investigate the relationship between compassion fatigue and depression, anxiety, and stress levels in nurses. Method This research is a multicenter, cross-sectional study. The study was conducted with 283 nurses in three state hospitals in northeastern Turkey using a purposive sampling method. Research data were collected by the researchers using a Demographic Form, the Compassion Fatigue Scale (CFS), and the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21). Descriptive statistics, normality assessment, one-way ANOVA, t -tests, Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were performed using SPSS 26 software. Results A total of 283 nurses participated in the study. The mean CFS score was 83.97 ± 13.76, while the mean DASS-21 scores were 8.05 ± 4.10 for depression, 4.89 ± 2.97 for anxiety, and 9.22 ± 4.32 for stress. Correlation and regression analyses revealed a strong positive correlation between compassion fatigue and depression (r = 0.574, p < 0.001), a moderate positive correlation with anxiety (0.349, p < 0.001), and a strong positive correlation with stress (0.583, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that depression, stress, male gender, working as a nursing education specialist, and job dissatisfaction were variables significantly associated with compassion fatigue. Conclusion Based on these results, it is necessary to evaluate compassion fatigue in nurses in conjunction with psychological factors as well as individual and professional characteristics. Furthermore, it is important to support nurses' psychological health, develop strategies to address compassion fatigue, and increase individual resilience.

Psychological distress and food neophobia: the mediating role of food choice motives among university students

Kocak, Tevfik; Kocyigit, Emine; Ozbek, Yagmur Demirel

Background: Food neophobia, defined as the reluctance to try unfamiliar foods, reduces dietary diversity and quality in young adults. University students, often subjected to psychological discomfort including sadness, anxiety, and stress, may be especially susceptible to restrictive eating behaviors. This study examined the link be-tween psychological distress and food neophobia, focusing on the mediating role of food choice motives in Turkish students. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 801 Turkish university students (232 males and 569 females). The data collection included the Food Neophobia Scale (FNS), the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Food Choice Questionnaire (FCQ). The body mass in-dex was calculated using self-reported anthropometric measurements. Statistical analyses comprised correlations, multivariable linear regression, and mediation mod-eling using Hayes’ PROCESS macro with 5000 bootstrap samples. Results: Food neophobia was positively associated with all DASS-21 subscales (p < 0.001). Regression analyses identified depression (p < 0.001), stress (p = 0.001), convenience (p = 0.001), and ethical concern (p < 0.001) as significant positive predictors, whereas natural con-tent showed a negative association (p = 0.046). Mediation analyses indicated that food choice motives partially explained the associations between psychological distress and food neophobia. Convenience and ethical concern consistently acted as mediators of risk, while natural content demonstrated a more complex role. Conclusions: Food neophobia among university students is influenced by both psychological distress and food choice motives. Depression and stress exert stronger effects than anxiety, with convenience and ethical concern functioning as consistent mediators.

Özkan, Ridvan; Yilmaz, Coskun; Uzun, Recep Nur; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Akar, Ozge Orhan; Öz, Faik; Çiçekli, Atif; Çiçekli, Aylin; Dal, Suzan; Ursu, Vasile Emil

Background Wrestling is a physically and mentally demanding combat sport that requires discipline, focus, and emotional control. Although its physiological effects are well documented, its psychological benefits in adolescents remain underexplored. This study aimed to examine whether a short-term, non-competitive wrestling program could enhance psychological well-being, reduce sport anxiety, and strengthen resilience in adolescent boys. Methods Thirty sedentary male adolescents (aged 12-15 years) were randomly assigned to a wrestling training group (n = 15) or a control group (n = 15). The intervention consisted of six weeks of supervised wrestling sessions performed three times per week. Psychological well-being (WHO-5), sport anxiety (SAS-2), and resilience (BPRS) were assessed before and after the intervention using the validated Turkish versions of the scales. Two-way repeated-measures ANOVA was used to analyze group & times; time interactions. Results Participants in the wrestling group demonstrated significant improvements in well-being (p < 0.001) and resilience (p < 0.001), alongside marked reductions in total sport anxiety and its subdimensions (p < 0.001), compared with the control group. All effects were large (eta p & sup2; = 0.52-0.94). Conclusion A structured six-week wrestling program produced meaningful psychological benefits in adolescent boys. Regular participation in non-competitive wrestling may serve as an effective approach to promote well-being, emotional stability, and adaptive coping skills during early adolescence, supporting the preventive and developmental role of combat sports in youth mental health.

Investigation of parents with high-risk infant on participation in care, depression, quality of life, and anxiety according to the infant's severity of neurologic impact

    Sen, Muserref Ebru; Yakut, Hatice

Aim: The study aims to examine the psychological consequences such as anxiety levels, quality of life, depression, and participation in the care of parents with high-risk infants who have varying levels of neurological impact severity. Material and Methods: Forty high-risk infants and their mothers were included in the study. The infants were divided into three groups according to the Dubowitz Neurologic Assessment Scale. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS), Quality of Life Short Form 36 (SF-36), and the NICU Care Participation Scale were administered. Results: There were significant differences in the mothers' anxiety and depression levels (p < 0.001) and many parameters of quality of life according to the severity of neurological impact. However, it was determined that the severity of the neurological impact did not affect the mothers' participation in care (p > 0.01). Discussion: Although our study revealed that parents' depression, anxiety, and quality of life levels changed according to the severity of neurological impairment in high-risk infants, care participation was not affected. The limited sample size and the inability to generalize the results to different cultural and socioeconomic groups are important limitations. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that the medical condition of the newborn seriously affects the mental health of the parents.

The psychological consequences of 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes

    Kiymis, Ibrahim; Fakioglu, Merve

The Kahramanmaraş earthquakes (2023) are the largest and most destructive earthquakes witnessed in the era of the Republic of Turkey. Earthquakes lead to serious mental health disorders (MHD) such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in individuals. Earthquakes that cause significant death and injury on a large scale, such as the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, can result in various mental health disorders. Therefore, the aim of the study was to examine the effects of variables such as PTSD, event impact, psychological resilience, depression, and anxiety levels on adult earthquake survivors affected by the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, using a quantitative research approach with survey techniques. A total of 662 earthquake survivors were reached. The effect of variables on each other was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). According to the findings of the study, event impact had a significant and positive effect on PTSD (β = 0.780, p = 0.000). Unexpectedly, resilience did not have a significant effect on PTSD (β=-0.04, p > 0.05). PTSD had a significant and positive effect on anxiety (β = 0.936, p = 0.000) and depression (β = 0.643, p = 0.000). Consequently, event impact’s severity increased PTSD, which in turn led to anxiety and depression. Surprisingly, psychological resilience did not serve as a protective factor against PTSD. For future research, it is recommended to examine psychological resilience with different event types, on different sample groups, and using more comprehensive and varied methods.

The Effect of Music on Fear and Anxiety of Children During Tomography: A Randomized Controlled Double-Blind Study

Kurudirek, Fatma; Demir Barbak, Zülbiye; Demir İmamoğlu, Zeynep; Çiftci, Kamile; Delice, Orhan

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the effect of a musical intervention during computed tomography (CT) on fear, anxiety and vital signs of children. Method: This randomized, double-blind controlled trial was conducted according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Studies (CONSORT) guidelines. The study sample included children aged between 6 and 10 years who met the inclusion criteria and underwent CT scan in the emergency department of a public hospital in eastern Turkey between 18 April and 20 May 2023. The research was completed with a total of 60 children, randomized to one of two groups. The nursing intervention of the study was playing music. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the Child and Family Information Form, the Children's Fear Scale (CFS), Children's Anxiety Meter-State (CAM-S) and the Vital Signs Monitoring Form (pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation). Ethical principles were followed in the research. Results: The level of fear, anxiety, pulse rate and respiratory rate of the children in the musical intervention group during CT scanning were lower than in the control group (p < 0.05). No difference was found between the groups in terms of oxygen saturation (p < 0.05). Conclusion and Recommendations for Implementation: The results of this study suggest that musical intervention during CT scanning in children is effective in reducing the level of fear and anxiety and stabilizing vital signs. By using such nonpharmacologic methods, nurses can provide support to children and alleviate emotional difficulties during procedures. Trial Registration: NCT06086509. Summary: What is already known about this topic? Music therapy is recognized as an effective nonpharmacologic intervention to reduce fear and anxiety in paediatric patients undergoing medical procedures. Previous studies have shown that musical intervention during CT scans can calm children, potentially reducing the need for sedation and improving compliance. Knowledge gaps remain regarding the specific effects of music on physiological parameters like pulse and respiratory rates during paediatric CT scans. What this paper adds? This study demonstrates that musical intervention during CT scans significantly reduces fear and anxiety levels in children aged 6–10 years. The research findings show that music intervention can also stabilize vital signs, such as pulse and respiratory rates, during CT scans, suggesting a relaxed physiological state. The results support the idea that incorporating music into paediatric imaging procedures can enhance patient comfort and improve the quality of the imaging process by encouraging children to remain still. The implications of this paper: Incorporating music therapy into routine paediatric imaging procedures can reduce anxiety, improve patient cooperation and potentially reduce the need for sedatives. Future research could explore the optimal types of music, volume levels and delivery methods to maximize the calming effects on children during various medical procedures. Training programs for paediatric healthcare providers can include education on the benefits of nonpharmacologic interventions, like music therapy, to reduce anxiety and improve patient outcomes in clinical settings.

Background: Boys often experience significant fear and anxiety before the circumcision procedure, and postoperative pain is linked to increased fear and anxiety in children. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of mandala coloring on fear, anxiety, emotional symptoms and postoperative pain of circumcised children. Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted in the pediatric clinic of a state hospital in eastern Turkey. Children were divided into two groups using a computer program: Group 1 (control) included children with no intervention (n = 40), and Group 2 (mandala coloring) included children who received mandala coloring (n = 38). Statistical analyses were performed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to assess the normality of the data, the chi-squared test to compare categorical variables between groups, the paired samples t-test for within-group comparisons, the independent samples t-test for between-group comparisons, and mixed model repeated measures ANOVA (rANOVA) to evaluate the temporal changes in pain and anxiety scores across groups. Findings: Children's fear, anxiety, emotional symptom, and postoperative pain scores were similar in all groups before the nursing intervention, and the fear, anxiety, and emotional symptom scores of the mandala painting intervention group were statistically lower than the control group after the nur csing intervention. The pain scores of the children in the mandala coloring group were lower than the control group after surgery. Conclusion: Mandala coloring intervention can be used to reduce emotional symptoms, fear, anxiety and postoperative pain in children aged 6–12 years undergoing circumcision.

The effect of a cognitive behavioural intervention package on peripheral venous cannulation pain, fear and anxiety in Paediatric patients: A randomised controlled trial

Demir Imamoglu, Zeynep; Aytekin Ozdemir, Aynur

Purpose: This study investigated the effect of a cognitive behavioural intervention package (CBIP) on peripheral venous cannulation (PVC) pain, fear and anxiety in paediatric patients aged 7–12 years. Design and methods: This randomised controlled trial included 77 paediatric patients (intervention: n = 39 and control: n = 38). The control group underwent a routine PVC procedure, whereas the intervention group attended the CBIP while undergoing a PVC procedure. Data were collected using a sociodemographic form, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Wong–Baker FACES (WB-FACES) Pain Rating Scale, the Children's Fear Scale (CFS) and the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children–State Form (STAIC–State). The participants, their caregivers and the researcher scored PVC pain, fear and anxiety levels. The study was approved by an ethics committee. Informed consent was obtained from caregivers, and verbal consent was obtained from children. Results: No significant difference in pre-procedural CFS scores were noted between the CBIP and control groups (p > 0.05). However, the CBIP group had significantly lower mean procedural pain (VAS and WB-FACES), fear (CFS) and anxiety (STAIC–State) scores than the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The CBIP helped children experience less PVC pain, fear and anxiety. Practice implications: Nurses can use the CBIP to help reduce PVC pain, fear and anxiety in children. Clinical trials registration: The study was registered at Clinical-Trials.gov (NCT06018909).

Effect of Lavender Oil on Preoperative Anxiety: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Kulakaç, Nurşen; Sayılan, Aylin Aydın

Purpose: Surgical interventions are known to induce anxiety in patients due to the associated risks and potential complications. Various methods are employed to alleviate preoperative anxiety. This study aimed to investigate the impact of lavender oil application on the anxiety levels of patients scheduled for surgical procedures. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Studies were accessed using the keywords “preoperative and lavender oil and stress” in Turkish and English between July 1 and 30, 2022, through PubMed (including MEDLINE), Cochrane, EBSCOhost, Web of Science, YÖK National Thesis Center, and Google Scholar. The standardized mean difference was calculated using random-effects models, and the Cochrane Collaboration tool was used to assess the risk of bias in each study. The study was prepared according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis checklist. Findings: Twenty studies were included in the analysis. The anxiety level of the experimental group to which lavender oil was applied before the surgical intervention was significantly lower than that of the control group (standardized mean difference:−5.40; 95% CI: −8.76 to −2.04). Conclusion: Preoperative lavender oil application was found to be an effective method for relieving patients’ anxiety. Lavender oil is thought to be a potential standalone treatment for preoperative anxiety.

Examination of Mental Stamina and Athlete Injury Anxiety Levels of Wrestlers

Ünlü, Çisem; Çevi̇Ker, Abdulkerim; Turgut, Abdüsselam; Kusan, Osman; Tezcan, Efecan; Gür, Kübra; Yildirim, Turgut

The aim of this research is to examine the mental endurance and athlete injury anxiety levels of athletes interested in wrestling from some demographic perspectives. In the study, a descriptive scanning model was used. The universe of the research consists of athletes from various cities of Turkey who are interested in wrestling, and the sample consists of 341 athletes selected by random sampling method among wrestling athletes from Ankara, Gümüşhane, Istanbul, Samsun and İzmir, Kayseri. As a data collection tool, the demographic information form developed by the researchers was used "Athlete Injury Anxiety Scale". In the study, the assumption of normality was first examined with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests in the statistical evaluation of the data. The research findings were given as n (%), mean and standard deviation values, and the findings were considered significant at the p<0.05 level. In the study, there was no significant relationship between age, undergraduate status and educational status variables, athlete injury anxiety levels and mental toughness levels; When the athlete's age, athlete's injury status, gender, number of nationality variables were examined, it was determined that there was a significant difference in some sub-dimensions of the mental toughness inventory and in the total scores of the scale. As a result, it can be said that demographic variables such as age, gender, being a national athlete are effective on the mental endurance and disability anxiety of the athletes.
