Changes of natural frequencies of masonry stone minarets due to temperature and humidity; [Yığma taş minarelerin doğal frekanslarının sıcaklık ve neme bağlı değişimleri]

Aymelek, Abdullah; Yanık, Yusuf; Yıldırım, Ömer; Türker, Temel

It is very important to distinguish the reason of change in natural frequencies of structures either caused by a possible damage or environmental conditions as temperature and humidity. In this study, the changes in the dynamic properties of masonry minarets under environmental effects such as temperature and humidity were investigated. The Minarets of İskenderpaşa, Hacı Kasım and Tavanlı Mosques in Trabzon were monitored by ambient vibration test method, the relationship between natural frequencies and temperature and humidity was tried to be determined. For this purpose, the natural frequencies of these minarets were measured at certain intervals under different temperature and humidity conditions over a period of approximately six months. The vibration measurement system which was developed by our research team was used in the measurements. From the data collected by these measurements, the variation intervals of the natural frequencies (the smallest and the highest values), the percentages of change and their relations with temperature and humidity were revealed. This relationship was determined by using linear-nonlinear simple and multiple regression analyses. From the study, it was found that the natural frequencies change under environmental effects such as temperature and humidity, and this rate of change was approximately 7%.

Kızıltoprak, Dünya Tajik; Hatıp, Sefa Haktan; Kızıl, Ömer Dicle; Aydın, Emine Büşra

Introduction: Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder associated with pain, reduced cervical mobility, and decreased muscle strength, often leading to functional limitations. Chiropractic manipulation is widely used as a conservative treatment, yet the comparative effects of different techniques remain unclear. ## Objective To compare the effects of the diversified and drop table chiropractic techniques on pain, cervical range of motion, and muscle strength in individuals with non-specific neck pain. ## Methods This randomized controlled clinical trial included 45 participants with non-specific neck pain, randomly assigned to three groups: diversified (DG; n = 15), drop table (DTG; n = 15), and control (CG; n = 15). Interventions were applied twice weekly for four weeks. The primary outcome measure was pain level assessed using the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Secondary outcome measures were cervical joint range of motion assessed with a goniometer and isometric neck muscle strength assessed using a microFET2 dynamometer. Outcomes were assessed pre- and post-intervention. ## Results Both DG and DTG demonstrated significant increases in cervical range of motion compared with the CG. Pain levels significantly decreased in both intervention groups. DG showed significant improvements across all isometric muscle strength measures, while DTG demonstrated selective improvements in flexion and right lateral flexion. CG showed no significant changes, except a decrease in extensor strength. ## Conclusion Chiropractic interventions effectively reduce pain and enhance cervical function in individuals with non-specific neck pain. The diversified technique provided broader muscle strength improvements, while the drop table technique showed more selective effects, emphasizing the need for individualized technique selection in clinical practice. The technology, innovation, and income inequality nexus: an investigation on G7 countries

    Çelik, Orkun; Sayın, Ferhan

This paper aims to explore the causality nexus among technology, innovation, and income inequality for G7 countries. For this aim, the bootstrap panel Granger approach is employed. The dataset covers the years between 1981 and 2015. Using two different Gini coefficients with pre-tax and post-tax income, the impact of income taxes on the nexus above is investigated. The results indicate that the bi-directional causality nexus is not detected in G7 countries except France. The signs of the nexus become different by countries. In this differentiation, income tax plays an important role. The novelty of this paper is to consider both the bi-directional causality and the effect of income tax in the technology, innovation, and income inequality nexus. It is thought that obtained findings may play a significant role in determining income distribution policies for policymakers.

Effects of Temperature and Time on the Diffusion Bonding of 316L Stainless Steel and H13 Hot Work Tool Steel

Aydın, Kemal; Yıldırım, Mehmet Serkan; Kaya, Yakup

This study examines the diffusion bonding of 316 L stainless steel and H13 hot work tool steel, aiming to optimize process parameters and assess the resulting microstructural and mechanical properties. Both materials were bonded at varying temperatures (700, 750, and 850 °C) and times (15, 30, and 60 min). The joints are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to evaluate interfacial morphology, chemical composition, and phase formation. Microhardness measurements indicate an increase in hardness from the 316 L side to the H13 side, suggesting intermetallic phase formation. Shear strength tests show the highest strength at 850 °C for 30 min, with longer times leading to strength reduction due to brittle intermetallic compounds. SEM analysis reveals improved bonding interfaces with fewer voids at higher temperatures and longer times, but the Kirkendall effect causes void formation, negatively impacting mechanical properties. XRD confirms α-Fe and γ-Ni phases, with Fe3C forming at 850 °C for 60 min. This study underscores the importance of process parameters in optimizing joint properties and minimizing brittle phase formation, providing insights for industrial applications requiring robust and corrosion-resistant joints.

Flexural Behavior and Sustainability of Dual-Waste Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Designed for Pavement Applications

Seferoğlu, Mehmet Tevfik; Aksüt, Yavuz Selim; Seferoğlu, Ayşegül Güneş

This study evaluates the mechanical performance and sustainability potential of fiber-reinforced concrete incorporating mine tailings as the fine aggregate and waste tire wire as the reinforcing fiber. The concrete mixtures contained 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6% waste tire wire with the natural fine aggregate replaced entirely with Pb-Zn-Cu tailings. The mixtures were tested for porosity, water absorption, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, toughness, fracture energy, and ductility to assess their mechanical performance and durability. The mine tailings improved the microstructure and reduced water absorption, particularly with tire wire. Using waste tire wire improved the compressive, tensile, and flexural performance; in particular, W-6 showed a 18.2% rise in compressive strength and a more than twofold increase in flexural strength relative to the control mix. The flexural toughness and fracture energy rose by up to 161%, while the ductility peaked at a fiber content of 0.2%. These gains were attributed to fiber crack-bridging and post-cracking energy absorption. The dual-waste system also reduced porosity, improved durability, and demonstrated strong potential for rigid pavement applications such as highways, industrial yards, and airport runways that require high fatigue resistance and a long service life. Beyond technical performance, this approach offers a sustainable solution that lowers maintenance, reduces life-cycle costs, and aligns with circular economy principles.

Carbon Pricing in the Fight Against Climate Change: The Impact of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism on Public Revenues and Revenue Redistribution

    Uğur, Candan Yilmaz

This study focuses on the fiscal aspect of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) introduced by the European Union (EU) and aims to examine the use of revenues from the mechanism for developed and developing countries. The CBAM aims to prevent carbon leakage and promote environmental sustainability through carbon pricing, while at the same time generating significant public revenue for the EU. The envisaged use of these revenues in strategic areas such as green transformation, sustainable infrastructure projects and similar is an important step in contributing to the EU's environmental goals. However, given the risk that underdeveloped and developing countries are disproportionately affected by CBAM, the need for effective use of these revenues in these countries becomes even more evident. In this context, the effective use of CBAM revenues in less developed and developing countries is considered as an important tool to support not only environmental sustainability but also the economic and social transformation processes of these countries.

Evaluation of Antioxidant and Enzyme Inhibition Properties of Siran Propolis: Correlations With Phenolic Content Determined by LC–MS/MS

Balci, Neslihan; Aslan, Kubra; Erturk, Adem; Gulcin, Ilhami

This study evaluates the antioxidant activity, enzyme inhibition potential, and phenolic composition of ethanolic Siran propolis extract. Antioxidant capacity was measured using reducing power (CUPRAC, FRAP, and Fe3+-reducing) and radical scavenging (DPPH·, ABTS·+, and DMPD·+) assays. The extract showed strong reducing ability, surpassing standard antioxidants in CUPRAC and FRAP assays, correlating with high ferulic acid (40.40 mg/g) and p-coumaric acid (88.60 mg/g) levels identified by LC–MS/MS. While it demonstrated notable DPPH· scavenging (IC50: 30.14 μg/mL), ABTS·+ activity was weaker (IC50: 272.44 μg/mL). Enzyme inhibition assays indicated effective inhibition of α-glycosidase, AChE (IC50: 2.15 μg/mL), hCA I, and hCA II. Notably, AChE inhibition was stronger than the standard tacrine inhibitor (IC50: 8.82 μg/mL), suggesting neuroprotective potential. The observed bioactivities are attributed to synergistic effects of phenolic acids and flavonoids, including quercetin, luteolin, taxifolin, and resveratrol. These findings highlight Siran propolis as a promising natural antioxidant and enzyme inhibitor source with potential therapeutic applications and food formulations.

The effect of high SiC ratio on the physical, mechanical, tribological and corrosion behavior of Al2024 alloy matrix composites fabricated by powder metallurgy

Beder, Murat; Varol, Temel; Akçay, Serhatcan Berk; Çuvalcı, Hamdullah; Erdemir, Fatih; Khan, M Adam; Yıldız, Uğur Temel

Reinforcing materials used in the production of metal matrix composites are used to improve the properties of the final composite. However, the compatibility between matrix and reinforcement and the reinforcement ratio directly affects the properties of the composite material. For this reason, low reinforcement ratios are preferred in many studies on ceramic particle reinforced composites. Unlike conventional studies, in this study, the effects of 10 wt%, 20 wt% and 40 wt% SiC content on the microstructure, dry wear properties and corrosion properties of Al2024 matrix composites were investigated. θ phase content became higher as the SiC content was increased. Hardness values increased with increasing SiC reinforcement. The highest value (307.68 HB) was obtained for the composite with 40 wt% SiC reinforcement, an increase of more than 100%. A decrease in volume loss with increasing SiC reinforcement was observed in the friction and wear tests. For 5 N of load and 1200 m of sliding distance, it was found that an addition of 40 wt% of SiC particles in Al2024 matrix results decrease in volume loss by almost 722%.

Kinetics and Isotherm Evaluation for Adsorptive Removal of Anionic and Cationic Dyes from Aqueous Media by Sulfuric Acid-Modified Beech Sawdust

Ozdes, Duygu; Ozeken, Sengul Tugba; Top, Yener; Kalkisim, Ozgun; Duran, Celal

A novel and efficient adsorbent was prepared by modifying Fagus orientalis L. (beech) sawdust with H2SO4. The adsorption behavior of H2SO4-modified beech sawdust (SMBS) was investigated by batch experiments to offer a straightforward, inexpensive, and effective method for the retention of anionic and cationic model dyes, indigo carmine (IC) and methylene blue (MB), from wastewater. The experimental conditions were optimized by investigating the effects of the initial pH, initial concentrations of IC and MB dyes, dosage of SMBS, period of the contact, and the presence of salts in the aqueous media on the adsorptive performance of SMBS. The initial pH values of the aqueous solutions, from which IC and MB dyes will be removed, were optimized as 2.0 and 6.5 (natural), respectively. The optimum contact time for the adsorption of both dyes onto SMBS was determined to be 240 min. The mechanisms in the adsorption of IC and MB onto SMBS were investigated by evaluating the experimental data through different isotherm and kinetic models. The Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second order kinetic model performed well in explaining the mechanism of adsorption. Langmuir monolayer adsorption capacity of SMBS adsorbent was 38.85 mg g−1 for IC and 58.82 mg g−1 for MB. As a result, CMCP exhibited excellent performance in adsorbing organic pollutants, providing a low-cost and easily prepared alternative to other adsorbents found in the literature.

Prioritisation of Human Resource Strategies in the Digital Transformation Process of SMEs

Olubiyi, Timilehin Olasoji; Longe, Olumide Babatope; Susela Devi, K. Suppiah; Sinha, Mudita; Şimşek, Tuğçe; Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır; Olubiyi, TO; Longe, OB; Devi, KSS; Sinha, M

This chapter focuses on the importance of human resource (HR) management strategies in the digital business strategy for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). With the increasing influence of digital transformation that alters organisational structures and implements new technologies, SMEs have no other choice but to evolve. However, due to the scarcity of resources, it becomes very important for SMEs to allocate its HR appropriately and effectively. To support decision-making on strategies like employee reskilling, recruitment of digital talent, leadership development, and promoting a digital culture, this chapter presents a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) framework. The prioritisation is crucial because not all the strategies can be executed at once, and SMEs should target the most effective ones in the long run, affordable, and relevant to their digital transformation agenda. This chapter illustrates methods for how SMEs can use the proposed prioritisation framework effectively. The hypothetical case study demonstrates the real challenges faced by SMEs during digital transformation and how MCDA assists leaders in selecting the most beneficial HR strategies. The case highlights the necessity of fitting strategies to organisational challenges to allow the customisation of training and leadership to align with business demands and maximise effectiveness while minimising costs. Upon use, this framework enables SMEs to comprehend and direct their digital transformation path more effectively.

A new approach to solving local fractional Riccati differential equations using the Adomian-Elzaki method

Aydemir, Hilal; Merdan, Mehmet; Demir, Ümit

The Elzaki-Adomian decomposition method (EADM) is intended to serve as an efficient analytical method for the resolution of these original fractional-order Riccati differential equations. This can be accomplished permanently by incorporating the Adomian decomposition method with Elzaki. The local fractional derivative is implemented in this format. Particularly in the context of nonlinear differential equations (ODE), this approach is preferred over digital gaps. Additionally, the method’s convergence. Random individuals with uniform, beta, normal, and gamma distributions are used to select the initial conditions or coefficients of the equations. The variance, confidence interval, and expected value of the solutions that are obtained will be determined. MATLAB (2013a) package software will be employed to display the individuals that were brought together, and the results will be analyzed randomly.

THE REGRESSION ANALYSIS AND DETERMINATION OF MECHANICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES ON GEOPOLYMER COMPOSITES UNDER THERMAL AND WATER CURING

    Cavdar, Ozlem; Temizer, Hulya

Increasing costs due to high energy consumption and the release of harmful CO2 gases in cement production have made it necessary to explore alternative binders. This study aims to investigate the physical and mechanical properties of geopolymer mortars containing different proportions of pozzolanic wastes under different cure conditions. For this objective, fly ash obtained from the Sivas/Turkey thermal power plant and blast furnace slag obtained from the Bolu/Turkey iron-steel industries were used as the binding materials. Thermal curing and water curing were applied, and three different molar ratios (8M, 10M, 12M) of NaOH solution and Na2SiO3 were used. The results showed that the reaction products, types of alkaline activators, and reaction conditions are important factors in geopolymer mortars. The highest compressive strength recorded was 84.7 MPa in the geopolymer sample which consisted of 95% blast furnace slag blast furnace slag and 5% fly ash fly ash. Furthermore, two different binder additives (marble powder and strontium) were used and their time-dependent effects on the main binder were analysed. In addition, according to the ANOVA statistical results, the R2 value of the independent variables (Molarity, main binder ratios) on the compressive strengths accepted as the dependent variable is 81.7%. The significance value is 0.007, and these results were considered quite significant.

Volumetric and microstructural changes in the Hippocampus and cingulum in children with west syndrome

PALANCI, Özgür; KAMAŞAK, Tülay; AYDIN KASAP, Zeliha; EYÜBOĞLU, İlker; DİLBER, Beril; CANSU, Ali

Purpose: We aimed to investigate structural changes in the hippocampus using automated segmentation techniques to evaluate the anatomy and function of the hippocampus in patients with West syndrome (WS). Methods: The study included 48 participants (24 with WS and 24 healthy controls) aged 0‐4 years. Automated segmentation methods were used to measure hippocampal volume and evaluate diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters such as fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD). Bonferroni correction was applied for multiple comparisons, setting the adjusted significance threshold at p < 0.0033. Results: Children with WS exhibited significantly reduced total hippocampal volume and diminished volumes in the CA2–CA3, CA4-dentate gyrus (CA4-DG), and SR-SL-SM regions compared to healthy controls (padj <0.0033). After correction, no significant differences were found in the CA1 and subiculum regions (padj >0.0033). Although initial comparisons between ongoing WS and seizure-controlled WS suggested increased volumes in several hippocampal regions in the seizure-controlled group, these differences did not remain significant after adjustment and must be interpreted with caution. Notably, patients with seizure-controlled WS displayed larger hippocampal volumes, higher FA, and lower MD values, indicating a possible link between seizure activity and structural alterations. Additionally, DTI analysis of the cingulum revealed lower FA and higher MD values in WS patients, suggesting compromised microstructural integrity. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the potential role of hippocampal alterations in the pathophysiology of WS and suggest that DTI parameters may serve as useful measures for monitoring disease progression and treatment response.

First evaluation and ecological risk of potentially toxic elements in the formations of Akçakale cave (Gümüşhane-NE-Türkiye)

Saydam Eker, Çiğdem; Külekçi, Gökhan; Uçak, Gül

In this study, the potential toxic element levels (PTEs) and adverse health effects of Akçakale cave formations were evaluated using geochemical parameters such as enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), ecological risk factor (Eri), potential ecological risk index (PERI), and non-carcinogenic hazard index (HI). Water does not pose a pollution risk, as the concentrations of potentially toxic elements in all samples are within the permissible limits for drinking water. According to the calculated geochemical parameters, all the samples were polluted with As, Co, Ni, Cu, V, and Pb. Ni, As, Cu, and Pb show very high ecological risk (PER > 320) in all samples, except Cu and Pb in T2T. The PERI values of the PTEs were more than 600 in all samples, indicating a very high potential ecological risk. The HI > 1 values for Co and As in all samples for both adults and children suggested potential non-carcinogenic health risks from exposure to these elements in the cave environment. The PTEs in the Akçakale cave formation were most likely linked to lithogenic, geogenic (Pb–Zn-Cu mineralization), and anthropogenic (agricultural activities) processes, per the findings of the data analysis using multivariate statistics (PCA and PCC). These data obtained are the first findings regarding the potential toxic element content of Akçakale cave.

Comparative Analysis of Vision Foundation Models For Building Segmentation in Aerial Imagery

Akbulut, Zeynep; Özdemir, Samed; Karslı, Fevzi; Sefercik, U.G.

Visual Foundation Models (VFMs) demonstrate impressive generalization capabilities for image segmentation and classification tasks, leading to their increasing adoption in the remote sensing field. This study investigates the performance of VFMs in zero-shot building segmentation from aerial imagery using two model pipelines: Grounded-SAM and SAM+CLIP. Grounded-SAM integrates the Grounding DINO backbone with a Segment Anything Model (SAM) while SAM+CLIP first employs SAM for generating masks followed by Contrastive Language Image Pretraining (CLIP) for classification. The evaluation, performed on the WHU building dataset using Precision, Recall, F1 score, and intersection over union (IoU) metrics, revealed that Grounded-SAM achieved F1-score of 0.83 and IoU of 0.71. SAM+CLIP achieved F1-score of 0.65 and IoU of 0.49. While Grounded-SAM excelled at accurately delineating partially occluded and irregularly shaped buildings, SAM+CLIP was able to segment larger buildings but struggled with delineating smaller ones. Given the impressive performance of VFMs in zero-shot building segmentation, future efforts aimed at refining these models through fine-tuning or few-shot learning could significantly expand their application in remote sensing.
