- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Prototype development of a solar-powered backpack for camping applications
Basoglu, Mustafa Engin; Üstek, Salihcan Muhammet
Solar energy, the use and importance of which is increasing day by day, stands out among renewable energy sources with many applications. In this study, the application of solar powered orthopedic back support backpack has been presented with a special photovoltaic module structure. The 2x12W photovoltaic panel system has been mounted on the backpack with a rail arrangement and optional use is provided according to the user's preference. Since there will be additional equipment in the solar self-energized backpack compared to a normal bag, the sections where the items should be put in the bag according to their weight should be specified to the user. Considering the center of gravity of the backpack, pockets have been made in the parts where heavy components will be fixed, and a 12V 7Ah lead acid battery is mounted in this section. There is a 5V - 1A USB output at the system output and a modified sinus inverter for AC loads. In addition, prototype production was carried out for the realized design, and a backpack was produced, which can be used for charging mobile phones and feeding simple AC loads such as heaters, coolers and shavers. It is thought that this bag will be an attractive product for camping applications and travellers traveling by hitchhiking.

Döner, Fatih; Kaya, Erhan
While preparing PTL (Power Transmission Line) projects, the land where the PTL is crossing is determined by considering criteria such as economy, environment and security. The realization of PTL projects is possible after acquisition of property of these lands. In this study, the process of acquisition land property in the implementation of PTL projects is evaluated. When data are examined, it is seen that the number of lawsuits filed against the PTL in past year was 15759 and rate of non-court settlement with land owners in the five-year period was 13%. The main factor for the high number of lawsuits and low settlement rate is real estate valuation studies in determining the price to be paid for land to which the PTL will be established. As land value determined as a result of valuation methods, criteria and rates referenced does not reflect real value in most cases, no agreement can be reached with the land owners. It is considered that most ideal solution from a legal point of view is to prepare a holistic valuation law that regulates real estate valuation activities, from an organizational point of view is to set a connection between cadastre and real estate valuation and from a technical point of view is to set-up a database which enables managing properties of real estates and their up-to-date values.

Terhan, Meryem
In the study, the combustion analysis is examined for the solid fuels in Turkey. The principal aim of the analysis is determined the limits and obstacles in the design heat exchanger to avoid the corrosion risk on the heat exchanger surfaces in the latent heat recovery applications from waste flue gas. To do this, in which regions of the heat exchanger the flue gas temperature reached to the sulphuric acid and water vapour dew point temperatures are required to predict. In order to predict the condensing zone, an air preheater for the coal-fired boiler in a heating system is designed using finite difference method. Designed the air preheater is consists of the counter-cross flow, U-shaped stainless steel tube bundle. The tube is discredited 200 cells to one-dimensional during the flow. The heat transfer rates, the flue gas and air inlet and outlet temperatures, surface temperatures of the tube wall, the mole fractions of water and sulphuric acid vapour, the other non-condensing gases in the flue gas are calculated in each discrete cell. According to the results of the study, while the dew point temperature of the water vapour changes over the range 30-40 °C, the acid dew point temperature waves to 125 °C from 140 °C for the coal types mined in Turkey.

Adali, Zafer; Korkmaz, Özge; Çelik, Orkun
In social sciences, especially in the economic literature, energy has been one of the most important topics. Energy seems to be dominant on the political and economic agendas because of nearly all economic activities linked to energy. Hence, all economies have endeavored to detect and implement policies to increase their efficiency and mitigate energy’s detrimental effects on the earth. This study’s principal mission is to check the connection between economic growth, non-renewable and renewable energy consumption in ASEAN-5 countries over 1990–2014 to recommend energy-saving policies. Within this view, bootstrap panel Granger causality test is applied. The model results indicate that economic growth causes renewable energy consumption in the Philippines and economic growth induces non-renewable energy consumption in Indonesia and Malaysia. A unidirectional causality relationship operating from renewable energy consumption to economic growth is approved for Brunei Darussalam. Finally, a unidirectional causality relationship working from renewable energy consumption to Brunei Darussalam’s economic growth is confirmed.

Celen, P.; Erdem, H.H.
In lignite (low-rank coal)-fired thermal power plants, thermal efficiency can be improved by decreasing the lignite moisture. The lignite moisture can be removed by using superheated steam and hot air as drying fluids. In this study, Turkish (Afşin-Elbistan) lignite having a diameter of 30 mm was dried with superheated steam and hot air at temperatures of 117°C under atmospheric pressure. The changes in its weight and temperature with time were observed, and the drying characteristics were obtained during the drying process. In the first period of drying, which is called heating period, the drying rate of superheated steam is higher than hot air in contrary to during constant-rate period. Moreover, the experiments revealed that less time is required to heat lignite sample with superheated steam compared to hot air.

Hisoglu, Seyit; Comert, R.; Karas, I.R.; Ben Ahmed, M.; Boudhir, A.A.; Ane, B.K.
Energy sources are divided into renewable and non-renewable sources. It can be seen that non-renewable energy resources are not adequately meeting the increased demands of worldwide technological developments, increasing population, and global consumption. Therefore, the demand for renewable resources is increasing day by day. When it comes to the use of non-renewable carbon-based fossil fuels, one of the first areas that come to mind is undoubtedly the Automotive sector. Today, it is realized that one of the main reasons for the lack of electric motor cars compared to petroleum fuelled cars, is the scarcity of electric vehicle charging stations and the difficulty of their accessibility. In this study; an analysis of solar-powered electric charging stations site selection was carried out for electric vehicles. The Ankara-Istanbul highway, which has a high traffic density, was chosen as the sample route for the study. Within the scope of the study, the areas where stations can be installed on the highway were carried out using the Multi-Criteria Decision Making Method with the help of Geographic Information System. Solar radiation, slope, aspect, land use/land cover, traffic volume and proximity to the road, criteria of the route, and site selection analysis were determined as input data. The maps of the determined criteria were arranged according to the study area and prepared for analysis. The criteria maps obtained were reclassified according to the above-mentioned criteria and scoring system. After the reclassification process, the weighting of each criteria which affect the analysis was determined by the researched literature and an overlapping process was carried out. According to the results map produced as a result of the overlay analysis, the appropriate area has been determined for the electric charging stations working with solar energy. Tunç, Merve Tuğçe; Koca, İlkay
In this work, optimum ohmic heating assisted hydrodistillation (OAHD) conditions for extraction of cinnamon (CEO) and bay leaf (BEO) essential oil were determined by response surface methodology (RSM). OAHD were compared with conventional hydrodistillation (HD). Hydrodistillation time (30–120 min), mass of sample (20–40 g) and voltage gradient (7.5–12.5 V/cm), were varied to maximize essential oil (EO) yield and minimize energy consumption. Optimized OAHD conditions were determined as 119.90 min, 8.83 V/cm and 40 g, and 120 min, 8.53 V/cm and 40 g for CEO and BEO, respectively. EO yields of cinnamon and bay leaves at optimum conditions were found 3.98 ± 0.25% and 1.36 ± 0.14%, respectively. Energy consumptions were found 0.42 ± 0.02 and 0.86 ± 0.09 kWh/g EO for CEO and BEO, respectively. EO yield of OAHD was found to be higher when compared with HD methods for both plant materials. Energy consumptions and emitted CO2 values of OAHD method were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than HD methods. Cinnamaldehyde (CEO) and eucalyptol (BEO) contents of essential oils extracted with OAHD were higher when compared with HD methods. Antioxidant activities of essential oils extracted with different methods were not significantly different. CEO and BEO formed inhibition zones against all tested microorganism strains. Practical Applications: Essential oils of cinnamon bark and bay leaf are commonly used for food and pharmaceutical industries and, have important economic value. Conventional hydrodistillation method to extraction essential oils is time consuming, requires more energy and has more CO2 emission rates. Ohmic heating assisted hydrodistillation as a novel technology, is a promising method to extraction of essential oils from different plant materials with lower process times and energy consumption when compared with conventional hydrodistillation. Ohmic heating assisted hydrodistillation method can developed with regard to scale up as a green technology to essential oil production. This work provides a knowledge about the effects of different OAHD process variables on essential oil yield and energy consumption for cinnamon bark and bay leaf essential oils. It is expected that the outcomes of this study will be useful for the designing of large scale ohmic heating assisted hydrodistillation units.
- MakaleYalnız künye2021Towards a circular economy: Investigating the critical success factors for a blockchain-based solar photovoltaic energy ecosystem in Turkey
Erol, Ismail; Peker, Iskender; Ar, Ilker Murat; Turan, İsmet; Searcy, Cory
Novel business models can be implemented through digital platforms to enable better circular economy (CE) performance in the renewable energy industry. For example, blockchain can assist in developing innovative business models throughout the solar photovoltaic energy ecosystem (SPVEE) to improve CE. Ranked fifth in total installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity, Turkey, as a developing country, should take the necessary steps and make progress towards achieving CE in the SPVEE. The solar PV industry requires further innovation to address the negative environmental impact of existing linear business models. To ensure favorable results, identifying and evaluating critical success factors (CSFs) are necessary. However, no study has investigated CSFs for SPVEE or any other renewable energy source to achieve a blockchain-based infrastructure towards increased CE performance. Therefore, the goal of this study is to identify and examine the CSFs to improve the performance of a blockchain-based SPVEE towards CE in Turkey. To this end, first, the CSFs for blockchain-based SPVEE were identified through both a literature review and the Nominal Group Technique (NGT). Then, Intuitionistic Fuzzy (IF)-DEMATEL was used to explore their interrelationships based on the expert data. Finally, IF-DELPHI was employed to validate the results. Our findings suggested that effective government incentive programs and regulations are significant for blockchain-based SPVEE towards CE in Turkey. The findings of this study assist macro and micro decision-making in the potential implementation of blockchain in Turkish SPVEE to improve CE. They are also invaluable for other countries and can be used as a reference point.

Kahraman, Abdulgani; Kantardzic, Mehmed; Kahraman, Mustafa; Kotan, Muhammed
There has been increasing interest in reducing carbon footprints globally in recent years. Hence increasing share of green energy and energy efficiency are promoted by governments. There-fore, optimizing energy consumption is becoming more critical for people, companies, industries, and the environment. Predicting energy consumption more precisely means that future energy management planning can be more effective. To date, most research papers have focused on predicting residential building energy consumption; however, a large portion of the energy is consumed by industrial machines. Prediction of energy consumption of large industrial machines in real time is challenging due to concept drift, in which prediction performance deteriorates over time. In this research, a novel data-driven method multi-regime approach (MRA) was developed to better predict the energy consumption for industrial machines. Whereas most papers have focused on finding an excellent prediction model that contradicts the no-free-lunch theorem, this study concentrated on adding potential concept drift points into the prediction process. A real-world dataset was collected from a semi-autonomous grinding (SAG) mill used as a data source, and a deep neural network was utilized as a prediction model for the MRA method. The results proved that the MRA method enables the detection of multi-regimes over time and provides a highly accurate prediction performance, thanks to the dynamic model approach.

Şan, Murat; Akpınar, Adem; Bingölbali, Bilal; Kankal, Murat
The present study aims to determine priority areas for installation of wave energy converters (WECs) in a semi-enclosed sea using a multi-criteria, spatial, decision-making analysis based on geographical information systems (GIS). The study also suggests a new methodology for determination of suitable areas for WECs taking into consideration different extreme wave conditions, intra-annual variation of wave conditions, and operational range of wave conditions by the WECs. A case study over a distance of 1140 km along the coast in the southwest Black Sea is presented. In the multi-criteria analysis, areas with environmental, economic, technical and social constraints are excluded. Ocean depth, distance to ports, shore, power line, and sub-station, wave climate, and sea-floor geology are all evaluated for their impact on the system implementation and weighted according to their relevance. Thus, the final suitability index (SI) map is produced and spatial statistical significance of the suitable areas is checked using hotspot analysis. Based on this, Kırklareli coastal area and the area between İğneada Cape and Kıyıköy village are determined as primary priority areas. The sustainability parameters with different weights proposed in this study do not differentiate priority areas but affect the SI scores.

Akyol, Mehmet
Energy plays an important role in maintaining vital activities. Like other sectors, with the developing technology, energy is used in agricultural activities. Therapid and uncontrolled increase in energy consumption in agricultural production, has sometimes led to a decrease in the efficiency of the energy use. Inefficient use of energy, which is a production input, leads to an increase in production costs. The increase in production costs leads to a relative decrease in output and such negativities exposing producers to loss of income.. Within the framework of the analysis, 10 countries who are called as transition economies and EU member as wellwere included in the study. Dynamic panel data method was used in the study which analyzed the period between 2009-2017. As a result of the analysis, it was observed that agricultural energy consumption had a positive effect on agricultural value added.

The Hudai-Sandikli geothermal basin having 23 thermal productivity wells is a significant geothermal energy source field. The analysis of power spectrum, conventional heat flow and silica heat flow methods were implemented to identify the geothermal waters circulation depth, depth to Curie point and surface heat flow rate in the Hudai-Sandikli geothermal field. Hydrogeochemical facies of geothermal immature ancient waters having deep circulation in lower hydraulic conductive aquifers are Na-Ca-HCO3-SO4 and Na-Ca-SO4-HCO3, which is represented very high ion content because of extensive contact with rocks. The heat conduction law is employed to specify the rate of heat flow using the geothermal gradient value. The numerical results determined from silica geothermometer method, the mean heat flow density and Curie temperature depth are obtained as 103.69 mWm(-2) and 11.81 km, respectively. The study region was represented by a mean geothermal gradient of 49.18 degrees C km(-1) yielding average reservoir depths of 0.90 km. The estimated Curie temperature, heat flow, reservoir temperature values demonstrated that the region indicates significant geothermal energy potential because of the partial melting of lithospheric crust.

Ozden, Talat; Carr, Anna J.; Geerligs, Bart (L.J.); Turan, Rasit; Akinoglu, Bulent G.
To a certain extent, the photovoltaics industry is well developed, and the performance and expected yield of standard photovoltaic modules are well documented and researched. However, newer more efficient photovoltaic cell and module technologies are being developed all over the world. Outdoor testing of new photovoltaic technologies is very important to understand and validate their reliability and performance under different environmental conditions. For the first time, one year of monitored performance data is presented and analyzed for two high efficiencies interdigitated back contact prototype mini-modules at different locations, having different climates. The test results of a commercial heterojunction with intrinsic thin-layer” module are also presented for comparison. The results showed that the two mini-modules remained stable for the duration of the test period, and showed no signs of degradation. They did perform significantly differently due to the different climatic conditions. The results also show that the combination of ambient temperature difference together with relative humidity impacts the performance of the modules. Calculated outdoor yearly efficiencies are 19.05% and 18.36% for two integrated back contact mini-modules tested in Petten-Netherland and Ankara-Turkey, respectively. The temperature coefficients of the modules are also calculated and compared with two commercial photovoltaic modules.
- MakaleYalnız künye2020A novel billing approach for fair and effective demand side management: Appliance level billing (AppLeBill)
Çakmak, Recep; Altaş, İsmail Hakkı
Demand side management (DSM) is an important part of smart electrical grid studies due to high energy efficiency it provides. Effective DSM techniques are hinged on participation level of the customers and control manner of their loads so if there is no fair and appropriate management, customers will not embrace demand side management applications. Besides, the customers might not participate to the demand response process willingly if their comforts are not considered. Therefore, the DSM systems must consider fairness and customer's comfort as well as distribution system objectives. Multifarious DSM systems have been proposed in the literature, however, the fair billing has not included as a parameter in most of these studies. This paper introduces a novel billing approach based upon appliance level billing (AppLeBill) for fair and effective demand side management. The proposed AppLeBill idea offers a billing strategy such that time-shiftable appliances (TSAs) in a residence may have a separate billing rate rather than a single billing rate for total electricity usage. The proposed AppLeBill concept includes three different schemes which are explained and simulated in order to compare each other in terms of their potential benefits.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Forward converter-based distributed global maximum power point tracking in partial shading conditions
Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin
Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is an essential part of a photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems to obtain the possible biggest efficiency. In partial shading conditions (PSCs), distributed MPPT strategy is used to eliminate mismatching cases between PV modules and load. In this study, forward converter-based distributed MPPT approach is presented for small power module-level and submodule-level MPPT applications. First, operation principles of a forward converter are explained for an MPPT application. Then, performance of a forward converter is evaluated by perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm for module-level and submodule-level MPPT systems in MATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results show that in module-level MPPT technique, forward converter cannot track global maximum power point (MPP) in some PSCs. On the other hand, submodule-level MPPT guarantees global MPPT (GMPPT). Average tracking efficiencies are calculated as 71.24% and 95.34% for module-level and submodule-level MPPT, respectively. That is, submodule-level MPPT outperforms module-level MPPT. On the other hand, submodule-level MPPT is more expensive solution since hardware requirements are very high compared with the module-level MPPT strategy.
