Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin
This study presents a multi-criteria techno-economic evaluation of electric buses (e-buses) equipped with vehicle-integrated photovoltaics (VIPV) to support the global transition toward zero-emission transportation. Aligned with international climate goals like the Paris Agreement and the European Union's 2050 carbon neutrality target, the research assesses ten 12-meter and 18-meter commercial e-bus models from various manufacturers. A computationally efficient methodology is employed, utilizing PVGIS-derived global horizontal irradiation (GHI) data specifically for Gümüşhane, Türkiye. The evaluation framework simultaneously analyzes several critical indicators: PV-based range extension, CO2 emission reduction, grid-connected charging frequency, battery depth of discharge (DoD), and payback period (PP). Findings from the baseline scenario—assuming 50% usable roof area and 22% module efficiency—reveal that e-buses can achieve a daily PV range of up to 19.16 km and annual CO2 emission savings ranging from 1709 to 2596 kg. Additionally, VIPV integration effectively mitigates battery aging by providing a peak DoD reduction of 6.91% and decreases grid-charging dependency by up to 5% during high-irradiance months. In an optimistic scenario featuring 80% usable roof area and 30.1% efficiency, the daily PV range reaches a maximum of 46 km, while the reduction in grid-charging frequency improves significantly to 21.16%. Economic assessments, including Net Present Value (NPV) analysis, confirm the investment's viability, with PPs as short as 3.76 years. This research provides a comprehensive, scalable framework and practical guidance for municipalities and fleet operators to enhance the sustainability of public transport (PT) through solar energy integration.

Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin
Decarbonizing the transportation sector is becoming a crucial focus in the 21st century. As the popularity of internal combustion engine vehicles declines, the adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) is significantly increasing. One of the main challenges for battery-powered vehicles, aside from safety concerns, is the limited driving range and frequent charging requirements. Integrating a photovoltaic (PV) module onto a vehicle's surface enables continuous battery charging during both motion and stationary periods, thereby extending the vehicle's range on a full charge. This study presents two main contributions: a modified 0.8VOC-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method for fast-changing irradiance conditions for flat-roof vehicle-integrated PV (VIPV) systems, and a long-term simulation analysis of classical MPPT methods using two new indicators for range extension and vehicle charging frequency variations under different irradiance profiles. The proposed MPPT method yielded superior energy performance, achieving 16–25 % higher energy generation compared to both the incremental conductance (IC) algorithm and the variable step-sized (VSS) perturb and observe (P&O) method. Long-term simulations conducted for three EV models demonstrated a daily driving range extension of 2–7 km with an 185W PV module, along with up to a 19 % reduction in charging frequency, depending on the battery capacity and vehicle models.

In recent years, developments in quantum sensing, laser, and atomic sensor technologies have also enabled advancement in the field of quantum navigation. Atomic-based gyroscopes have emerged as one of the most critical atomic sensors in this respect. In this review, a brief technology statement of spin exchange relaxation free (SERF) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) type atomic comagnetometer gyroscope (CG) is presented. Related studies in the literature have been gathered, and the fundamental compositions of CGs with technical basics are presented. A comparison of SERF and NMR CGs is provided. A basic simulation of SERF CG was carried out because of its high theoretic bias stability limit. Besides, some highly critical challenges for CGs were examined and reported with compensation methods. The objective of this review is to offer a guide for researchers to develop high-precision atomic gyroscopes and to encourage further research.

Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin
Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) procedure in photovoltaic (PV) systems can be realized with many different methods. Especially in arrays consisting of PV modules (PVMs) connected in series; the maximum power point (MPP) may change due to partial shading conditions (PSC), aging, degradation, fabrication production differences etc. In addition, even in small power systems containing a single PVM, the difference in shading and irradiation between submodules affects the maximum power potential of the PVM. In this study, power electronics-based power processing methods in distributed MPPT (DMPPT) systems are emphasized. Power electronics-based hardware MPPT solutions are examined in two groups as full power processing (FPP) and differential power processing (DPP). In addition, commercially available power optimizers have been examined under many criteria. The literature on the subject has been analyzed in a broad perspective, and it has been comprehensively evaluated according to criteria such as power processing level, converter configuration, MPPT algorithm, MPPT application level and control approaches. This study is an important guide for scientists and hardware engineers doing academic studies on the subject. This study, which examines the topologies and control approaches used in application-oriented studies, has the feature of triggering future studies. The features that commercial power optimizers should have and the examination of the products in the market within the framework of some criteria is one of the original aspects of the study. It is expected that this study will contribute to the PV industry in building applied and building integrated studies, where extreme shading scenario occurs.

Solar energy systems (SES) and photovoltaic (PV) modules should be operated at the maximum power point (MPP) to achieve the highest efficiency in the energy generation processes. Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) applications using conventional methods may not be able to follow the global MPP (GMPP) of the PV system under changing atmospheric conditions and they could oscillate around the local MPP. In this study, a machine learning and deep learning (DL) based long short-term memory (LSTM) model is proposed as an innovative solution for MPPT. Contrary to the traditional MPPT applications using current and voltage sensors, the output resistance of the PV module estimation was made by using environmental parameters (such as temperature and radiation) and artificial intelligence algorithms in this study. The LSTM model was compared with artificial neural networks (ANN) and regression methods regarding mean square error (MSE), root mean square error(RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) parameters. It has been determined that the LSTM model has a better performance and could more successfully follow MPP compared to the other methods. Finally, after the comparison with the ANN method, it is proved that LSTM gives 37%, 21%, and 31% more successful MSE, RMSE, and MAE results, respectively.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Forward converter-based distributed global maximum power point tracking in partial shading conditions
Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin
Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is an essential part of a photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems to obtain the possible biggest efficiency. In partial shading conditions (PSCs), distributed MPPT strategy is used to eliminate mismatching cases between PV modules and load. In this study, forward converter-based distributed MPPT approach is presented for small power module-level and submodule-level MPPT applications. First, operation principles of a forward converter are explained for an MPPT application. Then, performance of a forward converter is evaluated by perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm for module-level and submodule-level MPPT systems in MATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results show that in module-level MPPT technique, forward converter cannot track global maximum power point (MPP) in some PSCs. On the other hand, submodule-level MPPT guarantees global MPPT (GMPPT). Average tracking efficiencies are calculated as 71.24% and 95.34% for module-level and submodule-level MPPT, respectively. That is, submodule-level MPPT outperforms module-level MPPT. On the other hand, submodule-level MPPT is more expensive solution since hardware requirements are very high compared with the module-level MPPT strategy.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2019A fast GMPPT algorithm based on PV characteristic for partial shading conditions
Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin
Photovoltaic (PV) modules experience some partial shading conditions (PSC) due to some various factors. In that kind of a condition, a few maximum power points (MPPs) possibly appear on the power-voltage (P-V) curve, which increases the tracking difficulties. It is known that maximum power point tracking (MPPT) may not be realized by hill climbing (HC) based conventional MPPT algorithms under PSCs. In this context, this paper presents a novel micro converter based algorithm that was developed by using P-V characteristics of PV modules. Unlike voltage or duty ratio scanning techniques, this paper introduces a new deciding method to determine the correct global MPP (GMPP) region. For this, the proposed method uses some duty ratios that were calculated corresponding to each MPP region. Thus, the initialization of duty ratio is done properly, which results in high tracking speed and accurate tracking of the GMPP. The other advantages of the proposed algorithm are structural simplicity, less computational burden, and ease of implementation with a basic microcontroller. The simulation results show that this algorithm has fast tracking capability and it manages to track GMPP for PSCs correctly, since it includes an artificial scanning procedure. Single ended primary inductance converter (SEPIC) is built in order to validate the proposed global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) algorithm. The performance of the proposed GMPPT technique is verified by experimental studies. The results show that the proposed GMPPT technique is fast by up to five times than an adaptive full scanning strategy and improved IC algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can be commercially used in micro converters, since it is compatible with small number of bypass diodes in a module.

Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin
In this paper, an improved maximum power point tracking (MPPT) approach being low parameter dependency, simple structure and limited search interval has been presented for distributed MPPT photovoltaic (PV) systems. Basically, this approach is based on scanning of power–voltage (P-V) characteristic curve of PV modules in a limited duty ratio interval which makes tracking operation simple, fast and efficiently available in both uniform irradiance and partial shading conditions (PSCs). By limiting the scanning interval of maximum and minimum values of duty ratio via some analyses related to P-V characteristic for PSCs, global MPPT (GMPPT) is achieved in an efficient way. So as to validate performance of the proposed approach, a single-ended primary inductance converter has been used in both simulation and experimental studies. PV simulator has been used as a PV source to obtain different module characteristics with different number of bypass diodes and PV power levels. Both simulation and experimental results clarify that improved MPPT approach realises GMPPT effectively. Due to the high performance results, this approach can be an alternative technique in module-integrated converters, smart modules and PV power optimisers in which single module is used.
