Özcanli, M.; Serin, H.; Saribiyik, O.Y.; Aydin, K.; Serin, S.
An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the use of various blends of castor (Ricinus Communis) oil methyl ester with diesel fuel. Performance and exhaust emissions of castor oil biodiesel with diesel fuel in a commercial compression ignition engine were presented in this study. Biodiesel produced from castor oil was blended with diesel fuel at the volumetric ratios of 5% (B5), 10% (B10), 25% (B25), 50% (B50), and 100% (B100). Fuel properties of castor oil methyl ester and its blends with diesel fuel were stated. The performance results showed that blends of castor oil methyl ester with diesel provided an increase on brake specific fuel consumption and a small decrease on brake power output. Compared with diesel fuel, diesel-castor oil methyl ester blends showed that while the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions became reduced; the oxides of nitrogen emissions observed higher than diesel fuel emission characteristics. Test results showed that B25 was determined as a suitable alternative fuel for diesel engines.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Wave energy potential along the south-east coasts of the Black Sea
Akpinar, Adem; Kömürcü, Murat Ihsan
This study aims to assess and characterize wave energy resource along the southeastern coasts of the Black Sea. For this purpose, wave energy potential was investigated at a total of 7 study points in this area. The potential for energy generation was assessed based on six-hourly data from a third generation wave model (SWAN) covering the period 1995-2009. The results were validated with buoy measurements and wave energy and power was calculated with the numerical hindcast data. For characterization of wave energy potential, average annual and seasonal variations of the wave power in this area was firstly investigated. Second, wave energy development indexes and the probabilities of exceedance of wave power at the study points were determined. Third, wave energy resource in different ranges of significant wave heights and zero-crossing periods were characterized. Finally, It was found that annual wave energy of all points except Sinop point, whose annual wave energy is 10 MWh/m, is approximately 6 MWh/m and the bulk of annual wave energy occurs for significant wave heights between 0.5 and 2 m and periods between 2 and 5 s.

Sezer, I.; Bilgin, A.
This study investigates the effects of various operating conditions in spark ignition engines via an exergy analysis. A thermodynamic cycle model including compression, combustion and expansion processes was used for investigation. Induction and exhaust processes were computed with a simple approximation method. The principles of the second law were applied to the cycle model to perform the exergy analysis. Exergetic variables, i.e., the exergy transfers with heat and work, irreversibilities, thermomechanical exergy, fuel chemical exergy and total exergy were calculated in the exergy analysis. Variation of the exergetic parameters and the distribution of them into the fuel exergy were determined for various operating conditions, i.e., engine speed and load. The first and second law efficiencies and specific fuel consumption were also computed to reveal the optimum operating conditions. The results show that the exergy transfer with heat decreases and the exergy transfer with exhaust gases increases with increasing engine speed. Engine speed of 3 000 rpm gives the maximum exergy transfer as work, the minimum irreversibility and the best efficiency and fuel consumption. Exergy transfers with heat, work and exhaust and irreversibilities increase with increasing engine load. Additionally, the first and second law efficiencies increase and fuel consumption decreases with increasing engine load, so a high engine load gives the best efficiency and fuel consumption.

- MakaleYalnız künye2011Thermodynamic, performance and emission investigation of a diesel engine running on dimethyl ether and diethyl ether
Sezer, Ismet
This study investigates the use of dimethyl ether and diethyl ether in diesel engines as alternative fuels. A direct injection diesel engine was simulated via a thermodynamic cycle model for investigation. Thermodynamic and performance parameters besides emissions determined and compared for diesel, dimethyl ether and diethyl ether fuels at two different states. The results showed that dimethyl ether and diethyl ether presented a lower cylinder temperature and pressure, and thus a lower engine performance than diesel fuel for the equal injection conditions. The brake power declines about 32.1% and 19.4% at 4200 rpm while brake specific fuel consumption increases about 47.1% and 24.7% at 2200 rpm for dimethyl ether and diethyl ether, respectively. Engine performance for dimethyl ether and diethyl ether extensively improves for the same equivalence ratio condition, but a more amount of fuel is needed about 64% for dimethyl ether and 32% for diethyl ether. The gains in the brake power by dimethyl ether and diethyl are about 13.6% and 6% at 4200 rpm compared to diesel fuel. The brake specific fuel consumption is also higher about 43.5% for dimethyl ether and 23.6% for diethyl ether than diesel fuel. The brake thermal efficiency for dimethyl ether and diethyl is generally better than diesel fuel. The lower carbon dioxides are obtained by dimethyl and diethyl ethers at all conditions, while carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide are slightly higher for dimethyl and diethyl ethers at equal equivalence ratio condition. Akpinar, Adem; Kömürcü, Murat Ihsan; Kankal, Murat
The main objective in doing the present study is to investigate the sustainable development of hydropower plants in the Coruh river basin of Turkey, which is least problem river of Turkey in respect to international cooperation as compared with Turkey's other trans-boundary waters. Initial studies concerning the hydropower production potential in Coruh basin had been carried out by Turkish authorities in the late 1960s. Total installed power capacity and annual average energy generation of 37 dams and run of river (without storage) hydropower plants developed at various project stages by The Electrical Power Resources Survey and Development Administration (EiE) in Coruh basin are 3132.70 MW and 10.55 TWh/yr, respectively. Today, this generation value corresponds 6.45% of Turkey's energy consumption in 2006 while it meets 6.3% of total electricity energy production of Turkey which is equal to 167.9 TINh/yr in 2006. Besides, this potential developed at various project stages in Coruh basin will provide 24.1% of Turkey's hydroelectric energy generation being equal to 43.8 TWh/yr in 2006. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. - MakaleYalnız künye2011Modeling and forecasting of Turkey's energy consumption using socio-economic and demographic variables
Kankal, Murat; Akpinar, Adem; Kömürcü, Murat Ihsan; Özşahin, Talat Şükrü
This study deals with the modeling of the energy consumption in Turkey in order to forecast future projections based on socio-economic and demographic variables (gross domestic product-GDP, population, import and export amounts, and employment) using artificial neural network (ANN) and regression analyses. For this purpose, four diverse models including different indicators were used in the analyses. As the result of the analyses, this research proposes Model 2 as a suitable ANN model (having four independent variables being GDP, population, the amount of import and export) to efficiently estimate the energy consumption for Turkey. The proposed model predicted the energy consumption better than the regression models and the other three ANN models. Thus, the future energy consumption of Turkey is calculated by means of this model under different scenarios. The predicted forecast results by ANN were compared with the official forecasts. Finally, it was concluded that all the scenarios that were analyzed gave lower estimates of the energy consumption than the MENR projections and these scenarios also showed that the future energy consumption of Turkey would vary between 117.0 and 175.4. - MakaleYalnız künye2011Alternative gaseous fuels in port fuel injection spark ignition engines
Sezer, I.
This paper investigates the use of alternative gaseous fuels in port fuel injection spark ignition engines via the Lotus engine simulation program. To this end, the engine model for a port fuel injection spark ignition engine was designed, and engine performance was determined separately for gasoline and alternative gaseous fuels, i.e. compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas. According to the results, brake thermal efficiency increases while engine performance and fuel consumption decrease with methane and propane when compared to gasoline under the same conditions. While a slight increase in the fuel/air equivalence ratio of gaseous fuels improves the engine performance, fuel consumption remains almost stable. Another factor that enhances engine performance is the increasing compression ratio for methane and propane. In this manner, performance values that are closer/equal to gasoline are achieved. Under these conditions, fuel consumption decreases notably, while significant increases are observed in brake thermal efficiency.
- MakaleYalnız künye2011Total electricity and hydroelectric energy generation in Turkey: Projection and comparison
Akpinar, A.; Kömürcu, M.I.; Özölçer, I.H.; Şenol, A.
The main goal of this study is to forecast total electricity and hydroelectricity energy generation using historical electricity energy production data in order to determine the future level of electricity and hydroelectricity energy generation in Turkey. For this purpose, Turkey's electricity energy sector was reviewed during the period of 1940-2005. The total electricity and hydroelectricity energy generation were then modelled using historical energy generation data as years with regression analysis. Additionally, the portion that hydroelectric energy generation of Turkey has within total electricity energy production and probable meeting capacity of Turkey's hydroelectric potential of its future total demand was determined. According to the results, it is deduced that hydropower energy will have portion of 13.6% within the total electricity energy generation in 2030. In addition, it is concluded that the whole of Turkey's technical and economical hydroelectric energy potential that is equal 129.9 billion kWh will be used in the year of 2102 if the current trend continues.

Kucuk, Haydar; Midilli, Adnan; Özdemir, Atilla; Çakmak, Eyüp; Dincer, Ibrahim
This paper examines exergetic aspects of a Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) for Black Sea trout (Salmo trutta labrax) fingerling rearing at the Trabzon Central Fisheries Research Institute, Turkey. In its thermodynamic analysis, each component of the RAS is treated as a steady-state steady flow system and its exergetic efficiencies are studied. In addition, the following parameters are measured and recorded in experiments: the mass flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures and of the system components, surrounding temperatures, and electrical work utilized by the components in the RAS. Based on these experimental data, inlet and outlet exergy values, exergy losses, and exergetic efficiencies of each component in the system are determined to assess their performance. Moreover, the overall system exergy efficiency is determined. The results show that exergy efficiencies of the system components are highly affected by varying input exergy flows as a function of the surrounding temperature and chiller's operating period.
- Derleme MakaleYalnız künye2008Global warming and renewable energy sources for sustainable development: A case study in Turkey
Bilgen, Selcuk; Keles, Sedat; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Sari, Ahmet; Kaygusuz, Kamil
Renewable energy sources have been important for humans since the beginning of civilization. For centuries and in many ways, biomass has been used for heating and cooking. Many centuries ago mankind was already utilizing the clearly visible power of water for mechanical drive purposes, as was also the case with wind. On the other hand, Turkey, with its young population and growing energy demand per person, its fast growing urbanization, and its economic development, has been one of the fast growing power markets of the world for the last two decades. It is expected that the demand for electric energy in Turkey will be 300 billion kWh by the year 2010 and 580 billion kWh by the year 2020. Turkey is heavily dependent on expensive imported energy resources that place a big burden on the economy and air pollution is becoming a great environmental concern in the country. In this regard, renewable energy resources appear to be the one of the most efficient and effective solutions for clean and sustainable energy development in Turkey. Turkey's geographical location has several advantages for extensive use of most of these renewable energy sources. This article presents a review of the potential and utilization of the renewable energy sources in Turkey. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
- MakaleYalnız künye2004Energy and sustainable development. Part II: Environmental impacts of energy use
Kaygusuz, Kamil; Kaygusuz, Abdullah
As a consequence of the fast-growing energy requirements and the increasing use of low-grade domestic fuels, air pollution has increased considerably in recent years in Turkey. Since the energy demand is projected to continue to increase rapidly in the future also, energy-supply strategies are required to control air-pollutant emissions in a cost-efficient way, taking into account the legal emission-control regulations that have been enforced. This article extensively concentrates on energy and environmental impacts in Turkey only. Energy utilization and its major environmental impacts are discussed from the standpoint of sustainable development, including anticipated patterns of future energy use and subsequent environmental issues. Several aspects relating to energy utilization, renewable energy, energy efficiency, environment, and sustainable development are examined from both current and future perspectives in the country. In this study, air-pollutant emissions due to power generation and their harmful effects on the environment are also estimated.
- MakaleYalnız künye2002Energy and sustainable development in Turkey. Part I: Energy utilization and sustainability
Kaygusuz, K; Kaygusuz, A
Turkey is an energy importing country; more than half of the energy requirement has been supplied by imports. Domestic oil and lignite reserves are limited, and lignites are characterized by high ash, sulfur and moisture content. In this regard, renewable energy resources appear to be one of the most efficient and effective solutions for sustainable energy development in Turkey. Turkey's geographical location has several advantages for extensive use of most of these renewable energy sources. Because of this and the fact that it has limited fossil fuel resources, a gradual shift from fossil fuels to renewables seems to be serious and the sole alternative for Turkey. This article presents a review of the present energy situation and sustainability, technical and economical potential of renewable energy sources, and future policies for the energy, sector in Turkey. Throughout this paper several problems relating to energy sources and sustainable development are discussed from both current and future perspectives.
- MakaleYalnız künye2002Geothermal energy: Power for a sustainable future
Kaygusuz, Kamil; Kaygusuz, Abdullah
This paper discusses the potential and utilization of geothermal energy in Turkey. Geothermal energy for electricity generation has been produced commercially since 1913, and for 4 decades on the scale of hundreds of MW both for electricity generation and direct use. Utilization has increased rapidly during the last 3 decades. In 2000, geothermal resources were identified in over 80 countries, and there are quantified records of geothermal utilization in 58 countries in the world. The worldwide use of geothermal energy amounts to 49 TWh/y of electricity and 53 TWh/y for direct use. On the other hand, Turkey is one of the countries with significant potential in geothermal energy. Resource assessments have been made many times by the Mineral Research and Exploration Directorate (MTA) of Turkey. The main uses of geothermal energy are mostly moderate and low temperature applications such as space heating and domestic hot water supply, greenhouse heating, industrial processes, heat pumps, and electricity generation. The data accumulated since 1962 show that the estimated geothermal power and direct use potential are about 4500 MWe and 31500 MWt, respectively. Present applications have shown that geothermal energy in Turkey and other countries is clean and much cheaper compared to the other fossil and renewable energy sources.
