Empowering Education: Addressing Vaccination Hesitancy in The Covid-19 Era

    Tümay, Muhammed

The COVID-19 pandemic started in 2019 with the emergence of a new coronavirus and has greatly affected societies worldwide. It has led to an increase in mortality rates, disturbed pre-existing health conditions, disrupted educational systems, and reduced global workforce productivity and production. The scientific community has expedited vaccine development to combat the pandemic. However, the emergence of various vaccines has paradoxically resulted in a decline in public confidence, contributing to anti-vaccine sentiments. This study explores the pivotal role of education in fortifying vaccination rates and seeks to identify effective strategies to address hesitancy and strengthen public health measures. This research uses the two-stage least squares (2SLS) methodology to analyze the “Learning Loss Covid-19” cross-sectional dataset, which the World Bank published on January 4, 2023. The investigation focuses on the relationship between “Vaccination rate (per person)” and “Year of Education” across 41 countries. The empirical findings show that education has a significant impact on vaccination rates. An increase of one year in educational attainment leads to an approximate 14% increase in doses administered per person and a substantial 23% surge in the average dosage across nations. Therefore, education plays a crucial role in fortifying and elevating vaccination rates, demonstrating its significance as a potent tool in global public health endeavours.

Is there a chicken-and-egg relationship between interest and inflation rates for the turkish case?

Hayali, Ayça Sarıalioğlu; Küçükosman, Asiye; Lodin, Mohammad Mansoor; Aimar, Djallel

There is still a hot debate about the causal relationship between interest and inflation rates. On the one hand, through Fisher Effect, it is expected that inflation is the cause while the interest rate is the result. On the other hand, among policymakers in Türkiye, it is expected opposite as inflation is the result and interest rate is the cause since it is argued that inflation is the result mostly stemming from the high-interest rates constituting the high cost of the credits. However, it is strongly argued that low interest rates—which the government has lowered below inflation—rather than high interest rates are the real cause in the Turkish case. In this regard, the key purpose of the paper is to investigate the causal relationship between the interest and inflation rates for the Turkish case for the period of 2004M01-2022M03. The findings reveal that there is a bi-directional Granger causality relationship between the interest rate and the inflation rate for the Turkish case for the relevant period. This result promotes the chicken-and-egg relationship between interest and inflation rates.

The Effect of Materialism, Conspicuous Consumption and Sense of Shame on Intention to Purchase Counterfeit Products and the Mediating Role of Attitude

    Avcı, İbrahim

Counterfeiting is an essential issue that has existed since ancient times and has become more prevalent today with technological advancements, and it should be highlighted. Consumers who desire to buy expensive products, particularly luxury items, but lack the financial means to do so engage in the practice of purchasing counterfeits of these products. Counterfeit products are purchased mostly by young customers for a variety of reasons, including having prestige, showing off, and emphasizing materialism. The goal of this study, under this paradigm, is to disclose the impacts of materialism, conspicuous consumption, and sense of shame on the intention to purchase counterfeit products, as well as the mediating function of attitude toward counterfeit products in these effects in a sample of university students. Data were collected for this purpose using an online survey form, and it was discovered that 477 university students engaged in the survey during the data collection procedure. The data analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between university students' materialism and conspicuous consumption behaviors and intention to purchase counterfeit products, as well as a significant negative relationship between their sense of shame and intention to purchase counterfeit products. Furthermore, it was established that attitudes regarding counterfeit products play a significant mediating role in the impacts of materialism, conspicuous consumption, and a sense of shame on the intention to purchase counterfeit products. These findings provide significant theoretical and practical contributions.

A review on effects of diethyl ether on cyclic variations in diesel engines

    Sezer, İsmet

Diethyl ether (DEE) can be used in diesel engines as a fuel or fuel additive. The review study was compiled from the findings of several studies in this area. The diverse techniques are employed to mitigate the detrimental pollutants emitted by diesel engines. The first approach to reducing emissions involves altering the fuel system and engine design to improve combustion, but this is an expensive and time–consuming process. The utilization of various exhaust gas devices, such as a particle filter and catalytic converter, is necessary for the second way. However, the engine performance could be negatively impacted by these tools. Additionally, these exhaust devices increases the vehicle and maintain costs. The use of different alternative fuels or fuel additives is the third way that reduces emissions while improving engine performance. The particulate matter (PM), smoke, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the main environmental pollutants released by diesel engines into the atmosphere. The decreasing PM and NOx emissions at the same time is practically very difficult. The majority of researches indicate that using alternative fuels, such as natural gas, biogas, and biodiesel, or blending additives with conventional or alternative fuels, is the best way to reduce emissions. However, the characteristics of the fuel have a significant influence on cycle variations, which have a significant impact on engine performance, fuel economy, and emissions. Therefore, it is very important that the results of studies on the impact of DEE on cyclic variation are evaluated together to practice applications and to guide future studies. As a result, the primary focus of this study is on the usage of DEE as a fuel or fuel additive with different diesel engine fuels. The aim of this review is to investigate, using the available knowledge in literature, how DEE affects cyclic variations.

Do we burnout by being overcommitted testing an extended effort-reward imbalance model

    Demirbağ, Orkun; Ors, Serife

Based on the transactional stress approach, which predicts that employees' negative stress experiences will occur within the framework of their cognitive evaluations of stressors and in a dynamic process, this study evaluates the effects of role stressors on emotional exhaustion within the framework of an extended effort-reward imbalance model. Within the scope of the study, 705 participants consisting of academic staff, physicians and nurses across Turkey were included in the sample. The study aimed to reveal the moderating effects of overcommitment on the indirect effect of role stressors on emotional exhaustion through effort-reward imbalance. The findings obtained through multiple linear regression analysis show that overcommitment moderates the indirect effect of role stressors on emotional exhaustion through effort-reward imbalance, but contrary to expectations, the indirect effect is weaker at higher levels of overcommitment and stronger at lower levels. It was found that overcommitment acts as a buffer in the relationship between effort-reward imbalance and emotional exhaustion.

Assesment in the context of climate migration: hurricane katrina

Ugur, Omer; Aksoy, Metin; Efşan, Nur Çelik

Environmental problems, which have increased since the 1960s due to the impact of the Industrial Revolution, invite anthropogenic global warming. Dehydration, drought, deforestation, rising ocean and sea water levels due to the melting of glaciers, increased evaporation due to warming, and severe hurricanes resulting from the temperature- pressure difference resulting from the circulation of evaporated water masses in the atmosphere are among the disasters caused by global warming. While the devastations experienced after disasters resulting from global warming reach a level that a single country cannot combat, it creates a need for international cooperation. Thousand of people are displaced in the crisis environment that occurs after disasters, and this displacement brings environmental security threats. In the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in the USA in 2005, which is the subject of the study, the impact area of the disaster was wide as a result of the Bush Government and FEMA’s failure to make pre-disaster preparations at an optimal level and the dams and breakwaters built during the preliminary preparation process for the possible disaster failed. It has been revealed through information obtained from the US press that the disaster was described as man-made. Qualitative research techniques were used in the study and a literature review was conducted.

The effects of agricultural subsidies and agricultural employment on economic growth: a time series analysis

    Merddan, Kurtuluş

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of agricultural subsidies and agricultural employment on economic growth in Türkiye by utilizing annual data for the period 2000-2022. Benefiting from empirical analysis, the variables in the study were primarily tested with the unit root test. The differences of the variables for which unit roots were determined were purified from unit roots as the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test suggests. Appropriate lag test was applied to the series and then the causality relationship between economic growth, agricultural employment rate and agricultural support amount was analyzed according to the results of cointegration, error-corrected VAR estimation, and Granger causality test. Based on the results of the analysis, agricultural subsidies do not have a significant effect on economic growth or economic growth on agricultural subsidies, whereas agricultural employment has a bidirectional and positive effect on economic growth. Causality findings indicate no causality between agricultural subsidies and economic growth. A bidirectional and positive economic growth as a result of agricultural employment was determined, and the existence of a causality relationship between the two variables has been demonstrated. In conclusion, it has been found that agricultural subsidies provided for economic growth in Türkiye have not yielded effective results, whereas agricultural employment provided positive reflections. Therefore, taking measures for a controlled transition from the agricultural sector to non-agricultural sectors over time, thus increasing the quality and adaptability of the workforce in the sector, and recording employment through incentives will make a great contribution to the solution of the problem.

Evaluatıon of provınces ın türkiye wıth health ındıcators by densıty-based spatıal clusterıng analysıs

    Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır

This study aims to evaluate the health resource distribution of provinces in Turkey using DBSCAN cluster analysis method. The optimum values of DBSCAN parameters (epsilon and minPts) were tested by simulation and the clustering silhouette value was taken as the basis for selecting the appropriate parameter set. The results of the descriptive statistical analysis of the dataset show a high coefficient of variation, indicating inequalities in the distribution of health resources. By dividing provinces into two clusters, the study reveals the similarity of local dynamics in the inequality of resource distribution. The findings provide important insights for relevant stakeholders to address the disparities between provinces in Turkey. The fact that the study adopts a method other than the hierarchical and k-means clustering methods dominant in the literature and that the codes of the algorithm are shared in Python language broadens the horizons of the relevant researchers and increases the transparency and reproducibility of the study.

Investigating the validity of the gibrat law at the provincial level in Türkiye: parametric and semiparametric panel data models

    Zuhal, Mustafa; Kızılarslan, Şaban

The growth of cities is closely linked to the overall economic growth of nations. Especially in urban planning, predicting and modelling the growth trajectory of cities is crucial for ensuring sustainable economic growth. The growth of cities brings with it many social and economic gains, but it also increases many economic and social demands. The growth of cities is analysed based on geographical foundations, the assumption of increasing returns, and the random growth approach. The growth of cities is usually discussed in terms of three different models. The random growth approach is called Gibrat's law, and this approach allows cities to be analysed empirically. Gibrat’s law is analysed comparatively with parametric analyses as well as nonparametric and semiparametric models. This study aims to examine the validity of Gibrat's law at the provincial level in Türkiye using parametric and semiparametric panel data models. The study utilizes annual data from 2007 to 2019 at the provincial level. The analysis reveals that parametric models provide weak evidence for the validity of Gibrat's law, while semiparametric models provide stronger evidence.
