Solving nonlinear random fractional partial differential equations using Elzaki-homotopy analysis method

    Merdan, Mehmet; Aydemir, Hilal

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to develop and apply the Elzaki-Homotopy Analysis Method (EHAM) as an efficient analytical technique for solving fractional-order partial differential equations (PDEs). By integrating the Elzaki transformation with the homotopy analysis framework, the study aims to obtain accurate and convergent analytical solutions for nonlinear and random fractional PDEs. Additionally, it seeks to evaluate the influence of stochastic parameters, where coefficients or initial conditions follow various probability distributions. The research further aims to compute the variance, expected value, and confidence intervals of the solutions and visualize the outcomes using MATLAB software.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, the Elzaki-Homotopy Analysis Method (EHAM) is employed by combining the Elzaki transformation with the homotopy analysis method to construct analytical solutions for fractional-order partial differential equations. The local fractional derivative is utilized to handle non-integer order behavior effectively. The proposed approach is applied to both linear and nonlinear equations under random conditions, where initial parameters and coefficients follow uniform, beta, normal, and gamma distributions. Statistical measures such as variance, expected value, and confidence intervals are calculated to analyze solution behavior. All computations and graphical representations are performed using MATLAB (2013a) to verify the method's accuracy and convergence.FindingsThe findings of this study demonstrate that the Elzaki-Homotopy Analysis Method (EHAM) provides highly accurate and rapidly convergent analytical solutions for fractional-order partial differential equations. The method effectively handles both linear and nonlinear problems involving random parameters. Statistical analysis of the obtained solutions reveals that the expected values and variances remain stable across different probability distributions, confirming the robustness of the approach. The convergence region can be easily controlled through the auxiliary parameters of the homotopy method. Comparisons with numerical results validate the reliability and efficiency of EHAM, establishing it as a powerful alternative to conventional numerical and perturbation techniques.Originality/valueThis study presents an innovative analytical framework for solving fractional-order partial differential equations using the Elzaki-Homotopy Analysis Method (EHAM). By integrating the Elzaki transformation with the homotopy analysis approach, the method efficiently addresses the complexities of nonlinear and stochastic systems. The inclusion of random variables with different probability distributions enhances the model's applicability to real-world phenomena. Analytical solutions are systematically derived, and their statistical properties-such as variance, expected value, and confidence intervals-are examined. Implemented through MATLAB (2013a), the results confirm EHAM's strong convergence, reliability, and computational efficiency, positioning it as a superior alternative to traditional numerical techniques.

The Anageometric Calculus: Theory, Fundamental Results, and Connections With Classical Analysis

    Yalcin, Numan; Dedeturk, Mutlu

In this study, we develop a systematic framework for anageometric calculus as an extension of non-Newtonian analysis. Fundamental concepts, including limits, continuity, differentiation, and higher order derivatives, are established, and the connection to classical calculus is clarified through a logarithmic transformation. Within this framework, we derive the properties of the anageometric derivative, inverse function relations, partial derivatives, and mean value theorems. The theory is extended to integration by establishing the first and second fundamental theorems of anageometric calculus. Furthermore, the structural implications of the anageometric derivative are investigated, demonstrating that the equation D similar to f=lambda f naturally generates power-law solutions rather than classical exponential ones. This highlights the suitability of anageometric analysis for scale-invariant phenomena and proportional growth processes, supported by a practical heat-conduction example.

Women's breast cancer prevention behaviors and cancer fears: the sample of post-earthquake

    Aydin, Aydanur

In the event of a natural disaster, women who assume multiple roles within the family unit tend to postpone their health concerns and delay medical appointments. The present study aims to examine the relationship between the level of fear of breast cancer and the implementation of breast cancer preventive behaviours among women following an earthquake. The sample consists of 2,671 women aged 20 and over who participated voluntarily. The data were collected using two instruments: the Breast Cancer Fear Scale and the Women's Breast Cancer Prevention Behaviors Form. Following a comprehensive review of the extant literature, it was determined that women affected by earthquakes exhibited elevated levels of fear of breast cancer. A substantial decline was observed in the utilization of preventive measures necessitating institutional access, including mammography. The findings of this study indicate that education, occupation, and family history of breast cancer have a significant impact on women's post-earthquake fear levels in implementing preventive behaviours. However, given the cross-sectional design and the absence of pre-disaster baseline data, these findings reflect post-earthquake associations rather than temporal or causal trends. Natural disasters can result in the deterioration of health perceptions, exacerbated by heightened stress and health concerns. Consequently, there is an urgent need for innovative approaches to ensure the maintenance of health check-ups and continuous access to preventive care in the aftermath of large-scale natural disasters.

A SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF HUMAN AND MACHINE INTERACTION: THE BLACK MIRROR

    Denizli, Umut

This study examines the ethical implications ofcontemporary digital technologies for human existence, focusing on the semiotic construction of human-machine interaction in the anthology series Black Mirror. The research gap addressed in this article concerns the limited attention paid to the sign systems through which the series produces ethical meanings: while existing studies have discussed BlackMirror mainly as a thematic critique of technological dystopia, fewer have systematically examined how visual and verbal signs organise questions of consciousness, autonomy, surveillance, identity, and responsibility. To address this gap, the study uses a Saussurean and Peircean semiotic framework to analyse how selected episodes encode ethical problems at the intersection of organic and artificial life. The empirical corpus consists of fourteen purposively selected episodes from seasons 2-6, excluding the later seventh season released in 2025, and was examined through qualitative coding of visual and verbal signs related to consciousness transfer, artificial intelligence (AI), social media, virtual reality, surveillance, and digital vigilantism. The analysis identifies recurring oppositions between embodiment and disembodiment, autonomy and control, presence and mediation, and responsibility and outsourcing, which together articulate specific moral narratives about technological progress. The articles' original contribution lies in linking semiotic form to technological ethics: it shows how popular techno-dystopian fiction not only represents ethical problems thematically but also constructs them through recurring signs, oppositions, motifs, and narrative patterns. The findings suggest that Black Mirror foregrounds the fragility of human agency in technologically mediated environments and problematises unregulated innovation as a threat to dignity, privacy, and social cohesion within the selected corpus. The study concludes that these findings are interpretive insights from a purposively selected corpus, while also indicating the need for further research on how AI and related technologies are represented, governed, and ethically implemented in ways that protect human agency, dignity, and the broader public interest.

Cosar, Dilan Aktepe; Demirag, Hatice; Cin, Aynur

Background: Chronic illnesses are long-term, noncommunicable diseases that significantly affect daily life. In addition to physical symptoms, they can reduce quality of life by causing psychological effects such as anxiety and depression. Patients often seek health information to better manage their condition. Methods: This study aimed to examine the level of health information-seeking behavior among individuals with chronic diseases and the factors influencing this behavior. The sample group for this descriptive study consisted of 306 individuals with chronic illnesses who visited X Hospital in northeastern T & uuml;rkiye between April 1, 2024, and February 1, 2025. All individuals completed a questionnaire consisting of the Patient Information Form and the Health Seeking Behavior Scale. Results: The sociodemographic characteristics of patients with chronic diseases, such as education level, marital status, and chronic disease duration, significantly affected the health-seeking behavior scores. According to the research findings, the highest mean score was determined as 12.30 +/- 2.62 in the occupational health-seeking subdimension, whereas the lowest mean score was determined as 8.78 +/- 3.83 (min-max: 3-15) in the traditional health-seeking subdimension. The total mean score of the Health Seeking Behavior Scale was 32.2 7 +/- 7.73. Conclusions: Individuals with chronic illnesses tend to prefer professional health care services when seeking health-related behaviors. Health-seeking behaviors were higher among high school graduates, single individuals, and those without chronic illnesses.

The Role of Social Media Usage in the Professional Development of Employees in Micro-Scale Furniture Manufacturing Enterprises in Trabzon, Turkey

    Top, Yener; Sönmez, Gulen

Micro-scale enterprises contribute to the economies of the countries they are located in, such as employment generation, rural development, and providing training opportunities for semi-skilled workers. They constitute the majority of enterprises in terms of number, but their share in the production rate is low. Furniture manufacturing is one of the sub-branches of the main manufacturing industry, and the majority of the enterprises that produce furniture are micro-scale. These enterprises face several challenges. One of these challenges is that a significant portion of their employees have not received any formal vocational training. The communication opportunities and tools (such as social media) of our time have made it easier to access information. This has made informal education possible for those who have not received a formal vocational training or have received it but want to improve themselves. In this study, the use of social media in the vocational development of employees of micro-scale enterprises manufacturing furniture was investigated. With this objective, a structured survey was conducted face-to-face with 110 participants in the central district of Trabzon to adequately represent the target population. To analyze the data, frequency tables, Spearman Correlation Analysis, Kolmogorov-Smirnov Normality, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U and Chi-Squared Tests were used. The findings indicate that a significant majority of the employees are aged between 25 and 54, with 47.2 % lacking any vocational training. Furthermore, substantial differences were observed in the employees' use of social media for vocational development purposes, correlated with their age and educational level.

Formulation of mechanical properties of hybrid fiber alkali-activated concretes by data analysis

    Aksut, Yavuz Selim; Yetgín, Sukru

In this study, ground blast furnace slag (GBFS) and waste volcanic rock dust (RD) produced in a natural stone processing plant were used as binders. The binders were activated with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Sodium Silicate (Na2SiO3) to produce two types of concrete: alkali-activated concrete without fibers (AAC) and alkali-activated concrete with fibers (FAAC). In the production of concrete, steel and polyester fibers were used separately and hybrid at 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% and 1.0% by volume and a total of 117 15x15x15 cm cube specimens were produced. The mechanical properties of the specimens were evaluated by concrete surface hardness, ultrasonic pulse velocity and concrete compressive strength tests at 3, 7 and 28 days. The results obtained using non-destructive test methods were matched with concrete compressive strength values using various empirical formulas. Calculated concrete compressive strength values and actual concrete compressive strength values were compared using data analysis method. As a result, it was observed that there was a very significant correlation between the experimental compressive strength and the combined method in which 7-day surface hardness and ultrasound transmission rate were used together to calculate the compressive strength.

A Land Use Analysis of Coastal Reclamation Areas in Ortahisar District, Trabzon (2000-2024)

    Üzülmez, Mehmet

This study evaluates land use patterns in reclaimed coastal areas of Ortahisar district, Trabzon, from 2000 to 2024. It examines the role, functions, and environmental and structural impacts of reclamation in urban development. In mountainous cities like Trabzon, with limited flat land, sea filling is a key urban expansion strategy. The research combines literature review, satellite image analysis, and GIS mapping (ArcGIS), supported by climate, population, and topographic data from official sources. The study analyses reclaimed zones including Akyaz & imath;, Be & scedil;irli, Ganita, and De & gbreve;irmendere. InAkyaz & imath;, 39 hectares serve the & Scedil;enol G & uuml;ne & scedil;Sports Complex, and 29 hectares serve the city hospital ,which is currently under construction, alongside a mosque, fishermen's shelter, and parking. Ganita includes 17 hectares of parks and recreation and 9 hectares for transport infrastructure, reflecting a public-use planning approach. De & gbreve;irmendere hosts parks, fishermen's shelters, roads, a port, and breakwaters, with about 28 hectares unused. These areas address population growth and land scarcity, creating new urban spaces but posing environmental and engineering risks. International studies highlight issues such as ground settlement, structural instability, flood and storm vulnerability, and marine ecosystem damage in reclaimed lands. While valuable for infrastructure and public services, reclamation should be managed beyond spatial growth. The study stresses how multifunctional, public-focused, strategic planning shaped these areas. However, comprehensive interdisciplinary approaches are needed for ground safety, sustainability, and ecosystem protection. Future planning must mandate geotechnical surveys and environmental impact assessments. Reclamation should align with natural processes, not just physical expansion. Public participation and integrating local needs are crucial. Transport and access plans should balance coastal access and sustainability. Ortahisar's reclamations offer short-term urban solutions, but long-term risk reduction requires integrated sustainable planning.

The lived experience of individual stock investors during decision-making: a phenomenological perspective on investment psychology

    Soydas, Safak Sonmez

Purpose - This study explores how individual stock investors experience and interpret their decision-making processes beyond cognitive bias frameworks. It aims to reveal how investment decisions are shaped through cultural memory, moral values, social identity and digital environments, emphasizing the lived meanings investors attribute to risk, gain, and loss. Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative phenomenological design was employed. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 active individual stock investors in T & uuml;rkiye. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step phenomenological method to identify the lived meaning structures underlying investment decision experiences. Findings - Investment decisions emerged as multidimensional experiences organized around four interrelated domains: cultural roots and collective economic memory, moral and religious tensions, social status and identity construction, and digitalization with emerging economic perceptions. Participants interpreted risk, gain, and investment outcomes through family narratives, moral and religious evaluations, identity-related concerns, and digitally mediated information environments rather than solely through rational calculations. Research limitations/implications - The findings are based on a limited qualitative sample and therefore cannot be statistically generalized. However, they contribute to a deeper theoretical understanding of investment behaviour by integrating cultural, moral, identity-related, and digital dimensions within a phenomenological behavioural finance perspective. Future research may build on these findings through mixed-method designs and cross-cultural comparisons. Practical implications - The findings support investor education programmes, decision-support systems and behavioural policy design by highlighting the experiential and meaning-based dimensions of investment decision-making. Social implications - The study demonstrates that investment decision-making is shaped by cultural values, moral interpretations, social identity processes and digitally mediated environments, suggesting that financial decisions are socially embedded rather than purely individual or rational. These findings may contribute to more socially sensitive financial literacy initiatives and policy development. Originality/value - This study extends behavioural finance by introducing a phenomenological lived-experience perspective, demonstrating that investment decision-making emerges through interacting cultural, moral, identity-related and digital meaning structures rather than solely through cognitive biases.

The mediating role of physical self-perception and the moderating effect of gender in the association between physical activity and psychological well-being among young recreational participants

Ekizoglu, Ozlem; Tetik, Sibel; Zambak, Omer; Temur, Canan Sayin; Can, Yusuf; Isik, Utku; Koc, Mustafa Can

Background/objective Psychological well-being disorders are increasingly prevalent among young people. While physical activity is known to benefit psychological well-being, the mechanisms-particularly the role of physical self-perception and gender in recreational context remain underexplored. Grounded in the Conservation of Resources (COR) Theory, this study investigates the mediating role of physical self-perception in the relationship between recreational physical activity and psychological well-being and examines whether gender moderates this mediation among youth aged 15-24.Methods A descriptive-relational survey design was employed. The sample comprised 468 young adults (58.5% male, 41.5% female; M_age = 20.08) who regularly participated in recreational physical activities. Data were collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), the Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP), and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS). Mediation and moderation analyses were conducted using PROCESS macro-Models 4 and 7.Results The direct effect of physical activity on psychological well-being was not significant. However, physical self-perception fully mediated the relationship between physical activity and psychological well-being (indirect effect: beta = 0.219, 95% CI [0.151, 0.290]). Among the sub-dimensions of physical self-perception, body attractiveness had the strongest mediating effect. Moderation analysis revealed that gender did not significantly moderate the mediation pathways (a path: p = 0.156; b path: p = 0.954). The mediation mechanism operated with similar strength in both males and females. Conclusion Recreational physical activity improves psychological well-being entirely through the enhancement of physical self-perception, supporting the COR theory that physical activity acts as a resource investment. This mechanism is universal across genders in recreational settings. Interventions aiming to improve youth psychological well-being should not only promote physical activity but specifically focus on fostering positive physical self-perception and body image in inclusive, non-judgmental environments.

In this study, the excitation functions of the 67Zn(p,n)67Ga, 68Zn(p,2n)67Ga, and 89Y(p,n)89Zr reactions were investigated. Nuclear reaction simulations were performed using the TALYS 1.95 and EMPIRE 3.2 codes, by using Two Component Exciton Model, Geometry Dependent Hybrid Model, Exciton Model, and Hybrid Monte Carlo Simulation. In parallel, a feedforward artificial neural network (ANN) trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm was employed to predict the same reaction cross-sections using experimental data. Comparative analysis revealed a strong consistency between TALYS and EMPIRE calculations, ANN predictions, and experimental results, with the ANN providing enhanced predictive performance in energy regions where experimental data are sparse or uncertain. Furthermore, activation and yield calculations confirmed the feasibility of producing clinically relevant quantities of 67Ga and 89Zr under realistic irradiation conditions. In conclusion, the use of physics-based nuclear reaction codes with data-driven ANN models has been demonstrated to be useful in medical radionuclide production studies by providing a complementary framework for cross-section estimation.

The COPD-augmented R2CHA2DS2-VA score: development and internal assessment for predicting one-year outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve implantation

Boyaci, Faruk; Sahin, Mustafa Kursat; Akcay, Murat; Yanik, Ahmet; Yenercag, Mustafa; Seker, Onur Osman; Ucar, Melisa; Kokcu, Halil Ibrahim; Ozturk, Berkant; Kaya, Enes

Background Existing CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc-based scores incompletely capture the prognostic impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and of graded renal dysfunction in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). We acknowledge that the score's development in a high-risk, high-comorbidity cohort may produce optimistic performance estimates that require attenuation through external validation. We aimed to develop a novel COPD-augmented R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VA (COPD-R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VA) score that systematically integrates quantitative renal function and COPD, and to internally assess its discriminative performance for one-year all-cause mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Methods In this single-center, retrospective cohort study, 622 consecutive patients undergoing TAVI for severe aortic stenosis (2018-2024) were analyzed. The COPD-R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VA score was constructed as a prespecified clinical tool by augmenting the R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VA framework with COPD (1 point) and refining renal dysfunction into two graded estimated glomerular filtration rate strata (eGFR 30-59 mL/min/1.73 m & sup2;: 1 point; eGFR < 30: 2 points). Discriminative performance was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis with bootstrap internal validation (2,000 resamples) and compared with established CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc-based scores. Multivariable logistic regression assessed the independent prognostic value of the score treated as a continuous variable. Results The COPD-R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VA score demonstrated encouraging discriminative ability for one-year all-cause mortality (apparent area under the curve [AUC] 0.946, 95% CI 0.926-0.971). As a prespecified tool with fixed component weights, bootstrap internal validation confirmed negligible optimism (mean optimism - 0.00014), with bias-corrected AUC identical to the apparent value. The addition of COPD significantly improved mortality discrimination over the R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VA score (Delta AUC + 0.033, p = 0.0001). For one-year MACE, the apparent AUC was 0.806 (95% CI 0.765-0.852); the addition of COPD did not significantly enhance MACE discrimination (Delta AUC + 0.001, p = 0.853). In multivariable analysis, each one-point increase in the COPD-R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VA score was independently associated with 3.52-fold higher odds of one-year mortality (95% CI 2.45-5.06, p < 0.001) and 2.02-fold higher odds of MACE (95% CI 1.67-2.46, p < 0.001). The bias-corrected AUC of the full multivariable model was 0.973 (95% CI 0.962-0.984) for mortality and 0.795 (95% CI 0.752-0.841) for MACE. Conclusions The COPD-R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VA score demonstrated encouraging discriminative ability for one-year all-cause mortality after TAVI in this single-center development cohort (apparent AUC 0.946). However, this high discriminative performance is likely influenced by the elevated comorbidity burden in our cohort and the single-center design, and should be interpreted as an upper-bound estimate. The addition of COPD provides a statistically significant but clinically modest incremental improvement for mortality (Delta AUC + 0.033, p = 0.0001), with no significant enhancement for MACE (Delta AUC + 0.001, p = 0.853). These findings are preliminary and hypothesis-generating; urgent external validation in diverse, prospective cohorts is essential before any clinical application can be considered. At present, this score should be regarded as a development-phase, hypothesis-generating tool that complements rather than replaces guideline-recommended instruments such as STS-PROM and EuroSCORE II. The score's clinical utility remains unproven.

Financial Inclusion, Energy Intensity, and Natural Resources: Environmental Insights From BRICS and MINT Economies

Pala, Fahrettin; Barut, Abdulkadir; Torusdag, Mustafa; Pilatin, Abdulmuttalip; Henni, Mohamed Djafar

In developing economies, rapid economic growth intensifies environmental pressures, thereby increasing the importance of financial inclusion, energy intensity, and natural resource dependence for environmental sustainability. This situation necessitates a holistic examination of the determinants of environmental degradation in emerging markets, which motivates this study. In this context, the study examines the effects of financial inclusion, energy intensity, and natural resource rents on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in BRICS and MINT countries and empirically tests the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. Accordingly, annual panel data covering the period 2000-2020 are analysed using a machine learning (ML)-based estimation framework, the Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator, and Panel Quantile Regression (PQR). The findings indicate that natural resource rents increase CO2 emissions in BRICS, whereas they reduce emissions in MINT. Moreover, energy intensity and income per capita are found to increase CO2 emissions across all quantiles in both country groups. The environmental impact of financial inclusion is heterogeneous, reducing CO2 emissions in BRICS countries while increasing emissions in MINT countries. These results underscore the critical importance of explicitly incorporating country-specific heterogeneity into environmental sustainability policy design.

Mercury Removal from Glycine Leach Solutions Using Sodium Sulfide (Na2S) Precipitation

Kantarci, Sadiye; Alp, Ibrahim; Youpoungam, Abdou Azizi; Sivircik, Salih

Amino acid leaching has been considered an environmentally friendly alternative for gold recovery; however, the dissolution of mercury (Hg) during the leaching of amalgamation tailings remains a major challenge. This study is a novelty study that focuses on Hg removal by passing the Hg-containing tailings, previously processed by amalgamation, into solution via glycine (NH(2)CH2COOH) leaching. In this regard, a precipitation method using sodium sulfide (Na2S) was developed to remove Hg from solutions obtained after glycine leaching. The effects of precipitation time, pH, Na2S dosage, and temperature were investigated. The effects of pH, precipitation time, and temperature were found to be limited within the investigated ranges. The results showed that Na2S dosage was the most effective parameter in mercury removal. The initial Hg concentration of 12,160 ppb was reduced to 223 ppb at a Na2S:Hg molar ratio of 60, corresponding to approximately 98% removal efficiency under the selected operating conditions. Increasing the Na2S:Hg ratio to 80 resulted in a slightly higher removal efficiency (similar to 99%) with a final Hg concentration of 144 ppb; however, a ratio of 60 was considered optimal in terms of reagent consumption and process efficiency. The outcomes indicate that Hg removal with Na2S is a rapid and effective process under alkaline conditions, while Au remains in solution and Cu and Ag are partially removed, indicating limited selectivity and the need for further optimization. Therefore, this study provides a basis for developing more environmentally friendly processes for amalgamation tailings.

The study sheds light on the subtle interactions among financial development, foreign direct investment (FDI), and the quality of regulatory frameworks, with particular reference to their deep influence on renewable energy use and carbon emissions across 22 developed countries from 2002-2021. The results show an interesting tendency: Financial development and FDI will reduce reliance on renewable energy, whereas a significant increase in GDP per capita will increase reliance. Secondly, carbon emissions have a negative association with the adoption of renewable energy and financial development, though both reduce environmental quality; there is a positive relation between real gross domestic product (GDP) and energy depletion in terms of these toxic emissions. The significant role of regulatory quality as a moderator in this process is particularly striking. There is a direct correlation between financial stability and more robust regulation, resulting in reduced financial liquidity available for investing in renewable projects and restricting the free flow of clean FDI. Crucially, the paper argues that when combined with strong regulation, FDI is more likely to contribute to reductions in emissions, while FYGD, nevertheless regulated at a high level of quality, should raise emissions. Winding up, the result indicates that neither financial depth nor institutional quality, in isolation, is sufficient to deliver significant environmental improvement. Thus, it is urgent to adopt sound green finance policies and to formulate focused regulatory systems that integrate financial development and foreign direct investment with a broader sustainability agenda.

Nanoplastic Translocation Across Biological Barriers (Blood-Brain, Placental, Intestinal): Transport Mechanisms, Tissue-Specific Vulnerabilities, and a Corona-Driven Barrier Selectivity Framework

Nanoplastics (NPs; <= 1 & micro;m) have been detected in human placenta, blood, lung, atherosclerotic plaque, testis, semen, olfactory bulb, and brain, shifting the field from environmental description toward mechanistic interrogation of barrier crossing. This review synthesises current evidence on NP translocation across the intestinal epithelium, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the placental syncytiotrophoblast. We distinguish four evidence categories throughout the review: detection, association, mechanism, and causality. We also apply model-system labels (in silico, in vitro, ex vivo, animal, and human) to every mechanistic claim, so that the strength of each statement can be read off directly. Most current studies use pristine polystyrene nanoplastics at concentrations 3-6 orders of magnitude above plausible human exposure, so the mechanistic conclusions below are hypothesis-generating for human disease rather than definitive. We propose a working conceptual framework-corona-driven barrier selectivity (CDBS)-in which the particle-corona-surface complex, rather than the bare polymer, is hypothesised to dictate which receptor and transport machinery (TfR1, LRP1, FcRn, P-gp/BCRP, caveolae) each barrier engages. CDBS is offered as a hypothesis-stage organising tool requiring experimental validation, not as an established mechanism. We outline reported transport modes, including clathrin- and caveolin-mediated endocytosis, paracellular leakage via ROS-induced tight-junction disassembly, receptor-mediated transcytosis, and the candidate olfactory route. We emphasise that pristine polystyrene-bead doses commonly exceed plausible human exposure by 3-6 orders of magnitude, that detection methods underestimate sub-micrometre particles, and that causal links between NPs and human disease remain hypothesis-generating. A research agenda built on weathered reference materials, microphysiological systems, and integrative human biomarker science is proposed.

The Predictive Role of Fetal Growth for Placental Invasion Anomalies in Placenta Previa

Koca, Evrim; Dincgez, Burcu; Ozgen, Gulten; Simsek, Deniz

Objective To evaluate the predictive role of fetal percentile for placental invasion anomalies in placenta previa cases. Study Design: Retrospective studyPlace & Duration of the Study: Training and Research Hospital, January 2018 and December 2023 Methodology A total of 298 placenta previa cases was divided into two groups: PAS (placenta accreta spectrum)-positive placenta previa (n=98) and PAS-negative placenta previa (n=200). Then PAS-positive placenta previa cases were divided into two subgroups: placenta increta-accreta (n=59) and placenta percreta (n=39). Sociodemographic findings, obstetric features, fetal percentile measurements between 22 and 28 gestational weeks and perioperative characteristics of patients were recorded and compared between groups. Results Fetal percentile was significantly lower in PAS-positive placenta previa cases as compared to PAS-negative placenta previa cases (p<0.001). Moreover, fetal percentile <= 52.5 discriminated PAS-positive placenta previa cases from PAS-negative placenta previa cases with 75.51% sensitivity and 51.5% specificity (p<0.001, AUC=0.654). In multivariate analysis, a fetal percentile of 52.5 and below increased the risk of PAS by approximately 4 times (Hosmer-Lemeshow p=0.101, model p<0.001). No significant difference was detected between placenta percreta and placenta accreta-increta groups in terms of fetal percentile (p=0.224). Conclusion Fetal percentiles calculated between 22 and 28 gestational weeks could discriminate PAS-positive placenta previa cases from PAS-negative placenta previa cases, although it had no role in discriminating placenta percreta from accreta and increta cases. Therefore, the evaluation of fetal percentile in placenta previa cases can be considered as a supportive finding in the prediction of invasion anomaly although it does not determine the depth of invasion.
