Impact of Phytobiotic Supplementation Administered in Drinking Water on Meat Quality in Heat-Stressed Broilers

    Kaya, Hacer; Kamiloğlu, Aybike

This study evaluated the effects of a phytobiotic additive, hawthorn fruit extract (HFE), administered via drinking water on meat quality of broilers subjected to heat stress (HS). A total of 300 one-day-old broiler chicks were distributed into six experimental groups according to a 2×3 factorial design after a one-week acclimation period, with five replicates of 10 chicks each. Chicks had ad libitum access to feed and water for the duration of the 42-day trial and were exposed to a 24-hour lighting program. HS decreased the b* color value of breast meat while increasing L* and a* values and pH of thigh meat. Cooking loss (CL) of both breast and thigh meat was reduced, whereas water-holding capacity (WHC) remained unaffected. HS did not significantly alter thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), total saturated fatty acids (ΣSFA), or total unsaturated fatty acids (ΣUFA), but decreased monounsaturated fatty acids (ΣMUFA) and increased emulsion stability (ES) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (ΣPUFA). Adding HFE to the drinking water did not influence breast meat pH or color intensity, but WHC improved in breast meat with 0.2 mL/L HFE and in thigh meat at both HFE concentrations. The 0.4 mL/L HFE dose increased ΣSFA and decreased ΣUFA and ΣPUFA levels, while ΣMUFA decreased at both HFE concentrations. Overall, HFE supplementation mitigated several adverse effects of HS, notably enhancing ES and reducing redness of thigh meat. These findings suggest that HFE can be an effective phytobiotic strategy to improve meat quality in broilers under thermal stress conditions.

Future Expectations of Occupational Health and Safety Students: An Analysis Based on Educational and Socioeconomic Variables

    Tuna, Hasan; Kaplan, Ahmet

This study examines the future expectations of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) students regarding socioeconomic determinants and the emerging digital competency gap. The sample comprises 359 students selected through convenience sampling using the "Future Expectation Scale." Results indicate students possess moderate future expectations (x̄=2.66); while career optimism is high (x̄=3.93), economic and social outlooks are significantly lower. Notably, students from foundation universities and industrially active regions exhibit significantly higher expectations. These disparities highlight a critical gap in accessing practical training resources. Consequently, the study concludes that traditional educational methods are insufficient to meet modern industry demands. Integrating immersive technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), into OHS curricula is essential to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and Industry 5.0 requirements, enhancing student motivation and career readiness.

Determining the Optimum Ticket Prices in Bus Transportation by Using Game Theory: Case of Gümüşhane-İstanbul

    Bolayır, Banu

In a competitive environment, companies must make strategic decisions aligned with their objectives to sustain their existence and advance. One of the methods used to determine the best strategy for companies is game theory. Using the game theory, this study aims to determine the optimal ticket prices for the services of two competing bus companies operating on the same route (Gümüşhane-İstanbul). For this purpose, data on ticket prices and passenger numbers set by the two bus companies between October 2023 and October 2024 were utilized. Based on the data obtained from the two bus companies, the companies’ strategies were first identified, and revenue values were calculated. Subsequently, a two-player, zero-sum, and 7x7 game matrix was constructed using these revenue values. Through the maxmin and minmax methods in game matrix, the saddle point of the game was identified, and the expected values for each strategy determined for each of the two bus companies were calculated separately. Considering these calculations, it was concluded that both companies should set ticket prices between 1,250 TL and 1,350 TL to maximize their revenues.

Using the Laplace Transform Technique to Solve Hilfer Fractional Partial Differential Equations

    Merdan, Mehmet; Şişman, Şeyma

This work derives analytical solutions to fractional partial differential equations utilizing the Hilfer fractional derivative through the use of the Laplace transform method. The suggested method offers a cohesive solution framework that concurrently retrieves the Liouville-Caputo and Riemann-Liouville formulations as particular instances for designated selections of the Hilfer parameters. Exact novel solution representations are derived for the fractional KdV, modified KdV, K(2,2), and Klein-Gordon equations under appropriate initial conditions, emphasizing the impact of fractional order and type parameters on wave propagation characteristics. The approach circumvents linearization or perturbation assumptions and demonstrates a rapid convergence rate. Numerical simulations and graphical representations produced with the Maple program corroborate the analytical findings and illustrate the efficacy and universality of the proposed method.

    Uysal, Turan

In this study, an innovative and environmentally friendly alternative method was investigated for aluminum recovery from diasporic bauxite, classified as a critical raw material, without using caustic soda. Within this context, the alkaline roasting–water leaching combination was applied to enhance aluminum recovery from high-silica bauxite ore. Optimization of the process parameters was carried out using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The effects of key parameters, roasting temperature, milling time, and ball-to-powder/ore ratio (BPR), on Aluminum (Al) dissolution were systematically evaluated through the RSM design. The reliability of the model was confirmed by ANOVA analysis, and the regression results indicated that the coefficient of determination (R²) exceeded 90% for all responses, demonstrating a strong model fit. According to the optimization outcomes, the optimum conditions were determined as a roasting temperature of 919 °C, a milling time of 90 minutes, and a BPR of 23. Water leaching results revealed that aluminum recovery increased by approximately 26% in the ore roasted at 1000 °C compared to the raw (unroasted) ore. Overall, the findings indicate that the alkaline roasting–water leaching method is a promising alternative for processing high-silica bauxite deposits.

Modeling and Performance Analysis of Continuously Variable Series Reactors (CVSR) for Congestion Management in Meshed Distribution Networks

Ciftci, Okan; Tomsovic, Kevin; Ozkan, Gokhan

Distribution systems, particularly in densely loaded urban areas, frequently experience transformer overloading during peak consumption hours. Rather than resorting to costly infrastructure reinforcement or complex Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), this paper proposes a cost-effective optimization and control approach utilizing a Continuously Variable Series Reactor (CVSR). Unlike FACTS devices that rely on expensive power electronics, the CVSR capitalizes on magnetic core saturation to regulate reactance, offering a robust solution at a fraction of the cost (~$10/kVAr). The CVSR regulates the reactance on the primary side of the transformer via magnetic core saturation to control power distribution among transformers. In this study, the steady-state framework of the CVSR is derived and integrated into power flow formulations. The proposed model is validated using a two-parallel transformer system and tested on the heavily meshed IEEE 342-Node Low Voltage Networked Test System (LVNTS). Simulation results demonstrate the CVSR effectively relieves transformer overloading by redistributing power flow, thereby enhancing system flexibility and allowing utilities to avoid or defer extensive grid upgrades.

Gender and Mental Health: Challenges Faced by Women and a Feminist Perspective

    Türkkan, Tuğba; Odaci, Hatice

Mental health issues affect millions of people worldwide, leading to negative outcomes in various areas such as academic achievement, job performance, and quality of life. Women are known to be more prone to mental health problems than men, a phenomenon explained by biological sensitivity, genetic and hormonal differences, physiological stress responses, and exposure to environmental risk factors. However, research examining the impact of gender roles on mental health remains limited. Gender roles shape individuals' thought patterns, self-esteem, and emotion regulation strategies, making them significant factors that can influence mental health. In this context, the study aims to explore the effects of gender norms on mental health from a feminist perspective and evaluate the role of gender-based antecedents in this process through a review of the current literature. The study findings reveal that traditional gender roles negatively affect women’s mental health, while approaches promoting equality yield positive outcomes. Enhancing women’s access to education and economic independence is a crucial step toward reducing gender-based inequalities. Additionally, implementing gender equality policies and increasing inclusive representations in the media can mitigate the adverse effects on mental health. Education, awareness campaigns, and supportive social policies have the potential to reduce the impact of gender roles and improve individuals’ mental health. This study aims to guide effective mental health policies and targeted interventions.

In this study, a novel and efficient adsorbent was developed by immobilizing inactivated Brevibacillus agri biomass onto an abundant natural clay via a simple synthesis route for Pb(II) removal from aqueous media. The adsorption behavior of inactivated Brevibacillus agri-loaded clay (BLC) was evaluated using batch experiments by investigating the effects of initial solution pH (2.0–6.0), BLC dosage (0.5–4.0 g/L), contact time (1–180 min), initial Pb(II) concentration (10–420 mg/L), temperature (25–80°C), and the presence of foreign ions. The optimum conditions were determined to be an initial solution pH of 5.0 and a contact time of 120 min. Isotherm models were applied to elucidate the interactions between Pb(II) ions and BLC, while kinetic studies were conducted to evaluate the adsorption performance and underlying mechanisms. The maximum adsorption capacity of BLC was determined as 65.4 mg/g according to the Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic parameters revealed that Pb(II) adsorption on BLC was exothermic, feasible, and spontaneous at 25ºC. Artificial neural network (ANN) studies provided highly accurate predictions by modeling and confirmed the reliability and applicability of the model for Pb(II) removal in industrial applications. This study presents an innovative and sustainable approach for heavy metal removal, offering an effective solution applicable to environmental remediation processes.

Comparative evaluation of bioactive properties of Philadelphus coronarius leaf and flower extracts: Antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities

Burnaz, Nesibe Arslan; Zemzemoglu, Tuba Eda Arpa

This study comparatively evaluated the bioactive properties of Philadelphus coronarius leaf and flower extracts, focusing on phenolic composition, antioxidant capacity, and enzyme inhibitory activities. Plant materials were collected, dried, powdered, and extracted using 80% ethanol via ultrasound-assisted extraction. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activities (ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP assays) were determined, along with α-glucosidase and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities. The leaf extract exhibited significantly higher phenolic and flavonoid contents (4082.81 mg GAE/100 g DW and 3444.17 mg CE/100 g DW, respectively) compared to the flower extract (1864.06 mg GAE/100 g DW and 869.17 mg CE/100 g DW). Similarly, the antioxidant capacities (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP values) of the leaf extract were found to be significantly higher than those of the flower extract. In enzyme inhibition studies, the leaf extract demonstrated stronger α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (IC50: 0.0211 mg/mL) than the flower extract (IC50: 0.0523 mg/mL). In contrast, acetylcholinesterase inhibition was similar for both extracts. Overall, the findings indicate that P. coronarius leaves possess a strong bioactive potential, particularly in terms of phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity, and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Therefore, the leaf part of this species may be considered a promising natural source of antioxidants and functional bioactive compounds.

Effects of drying methods on physicochemical properties and bioactive compounds of wild fruits native to the Gümüşhane flora of NE Türkiye

Bulut, Volkan Numan; Baltaci, Cemalettin; Gundogdu, Ali; Barlak, Esra

Wild fruits are valuable natural sources of bioactive compounds with significant nutritional and functional properties. This study comparatively evaluated the effects of freeze-drying (FD), oven drying (OD), and open-air drying (AD) on the physicochemical properties, total phenolic content (TPC), vitamin C content, and antioxidant properties of five wild fruit species naturally growing in the Gümüşhane region of Türkiye: wild pear (Pyrus elaegrifolia Pall.), hawthorn (Crataegus orientalis), rosehip (Rosa canina L.), cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.), and barberry (Berberis vulgaris). Drying method markedly affected both physicochemical characteristics and bioactive compounds. Oven drying produced the lowest water activity values (0.10–0.34), indicating enhanced microbiological stability, whereas freeze-dried samples generally showed superior preservation of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. The highest TPC was observed in air-dried cornelian cherry (935.59 mg GAE/kg), while freeze- dried rosehip exhibited the highest TPC among freeze-dried samples (907.63 mg GAE/kg). Vitamin C was highly sensitive to thermal processing, and most oven-dried samples showed values below the detection limit (<0.30 mg/kg). In contrast, freeze-dried rosehip retained the highest vitamin C content (1594 mg/kg). Freeze-dried cornelian cherry exhibited the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (93.45%), whereas oven-dried rosehip showed the highest total antioxidant content (33.38 mg/g). The relatively high antioxidant values observed in some oven-dried samples may also be partially associated with the formation of Maillard reaction products exhibiting antioxidant properties under thermal processing conditions. Correlation and hierarchical cluster analyses revealed statistically significant (p < 0.05) fruit-specific differences in antioxidant behavior and clustering patterns, indicating that the responses to drying treatments were more strongly influenced by fruit matrix composition than by drying method alone. The findings demonstrate that the effects of drying treatments are strongly fruit matrix-dependent and that no single drying method is universally optimal for preserving all quality attributes of wild fruits.

Value Creation and Market Perception in the Construction Sector: Adjusted EVA and MVA Analysis

    Kalkan, Yusuf

Purpose – This study aims to assess the financial performance of firms listed in Borsa Istanbul’s Construction and Public Works sector through the calculation of adjusted Economic Value Added (EVA) and Market Value Added (MVA). In this context, the association between the value created by these companies and their market values is examined. Design/methodology/approach – In the study, adjusted EVA and MVA values for the 2022–2024 period were calculated using the financial data of the relevant firms, and the relationships between these indicators and Market Value (MV) were tested through statistical analyses. Results – The results indicate that negative EVA values prevail across the sector, suggesting that most firms have been unable to cover their cost of capital. While a strong relationship was observed between MVA and Market Value (MV) in the first year, a negative and statistically significant relationship was found between EVA and MV for all years. However, no significant relationship was identified between EVA and MVA. Discussion – The findings reveal that investor behavior does not always align with companies’ internal performance indicators. This indicates that relying solely on a single metric in the evaluation of financial performance may be insufficient. On the other hand, the findings of the study show both similarities and differences compared to previous research. These differences may stem from sectoral and regional dynamics as well as variability in investor perceptions. Thus, this study reveals that financial performance indicators can carry different meanings depending on the sectoral context, and that contextual factors should be taken into account when interpreting these indicators.
