Revisiting graphical passwords for augmenting, not replacing, text passwords

Akpulat, Murat; Bicakci, Kemal; Cil, Ugur

Users generally choose weak passwords which can be easily guessed. On the other hand, adoption of alternatives to text passwords has been slow due to cost and usability factors. We acknowledge that incumbent passwords remain difficult to beat and introduce in this study Type&Click (T&C), a hybrid scheme supporting text passwords with the graphical passwords. In T&C, users first type a text as usual and then make a single click on an image to complete the password entry. While largely preserving the login experience with the text passwords, the new scheme utilizes accumulated scientific knowledge in graphical password research (implicit feedback, persuasion during password creation, leveraging cued recall memory). The results of our user study suggest that T&C is promising for augmenting text passwords for improved security without degrading usability. Copyright 2013 ACM.

Spaces of continuous and bounded functions over the field of geometric complex numbers

    Cakir, Zafer

Following Grossman and Katz (Non-Newtonian Calculus, 1972), we construct the sets B(A) and C(A) of geometric complex-valued bounded and continuous functions, where A denotes the compact subset of the complex plane C. We show that the sets B(A) and C(A) of complex-valued bounded and continuous functions form a vector space with respect to the addition and scalar multiplication in the sense of multiplicative calculus. Finally, we prove that B(A) and C(A) are complete metric spaces.

Petrogenesis and U-Pb zircon chronology of adakitic porphyries within the Kop ultramafic massif (Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt, NE Turkey)

Eyuboglu, Yener; Dudas, Francis O.; Santosh, M.; Yi, Keewook; Kwon, Sanghoon; Akaryali, Enver

High-silica adakites intrude the Kop ultramafic massif in the eastern Pontide orogenic belt of NE Turkey. These dominantly dacitic to rhyodacitic plagioclase porphyries form clusters of small intrusions. U-Pb dating of zircons from two intrusions yields ages between 52 and 59 Ma. The best-constrained crystallization age is 55.83 +/- 0.04 Ma, indicating that these are the oldest adakitic rocks of the eastern Pontides. The rocks show geochemical signatures typical of adakites. The absence of systematic geochemical variation within the adakite suite indicates a subordinate role for fractional crystallization and binary mixing, and suggests that individual intrusions may represent separate, small batches of magma. Modeling of partial melting suggests that the degree of melting was 5-20%, that the residues after melting likely contained garnet, clinopyroxene, and rutile, and that plagioclase was either absent or totally consumed during partial melting. The most likely source compositions had large-ion lithophile elements >10 times, and heavy rare earth elements <10 times, chondritic concentrations. Modeled bulk distribution coefficients indicate that the adakites were generated as silicic magmas, and are not derived by fractional crystallization from basaltic or andesitic parental melts. Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic data indicate at least three isotopically distinct sources, one of which is depleted mantle. The other components include upper crust (possibly a mixture of subducted sediment and Hercynian continental basement rocks) and a component that may include both lower crust and sublithospheric mantle. These adakites are unique among the late Cretaceous and Cenozoic igneous rocks of the eastern Pontides in having a large proportion of the depleted mantle component. The prominent role of the depleted mantle in their petrogenesis suggests that the adakites may be related to a slab window in a south-directed subduction zone. Physicochemical characteristics of a novel activated carbon produced from tea industry waste

Gundogdu, Ali; Duran, Celal; Senturk, H. Basri; Soylak, Mustafa; Imamoglu, Mustafa; Onal, Yunus

Tonnes of waste are generated during tea production in Turkey, one of the black tea producing countries in the world. These wastes are not used for any purposes throughout industrial sector. The objective of this study is to bring in economic value to waste materials by producing activated carbons from wastes of a tea plant and to characterize their physicochemical properties. Three types of activated carbons were produced by chemical activation using zinc chloride from tea industry wastes (TIW). Mesoporous structure and surface area rise as the ratio of ZnCl2/TIW increases. When the ratios of ZnCl2/TIW were selected as 1/2:1, 1:1, and 2:1, mesoporous activated carbons are found in the percentages of 10.9%, 39.9% and 77.7% with BET surface areas of 706, 1066 and 1141 m(2) g(-1), respectively. The resultant activated carbons were characterized by analyses of proximate-ultimate, FT-IR, SEM, TGA, methylene blue-iodine numbers, and surface functional groups. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Can, İbrahim; Kale, Rasim; Cihan, Hamit; Ari, Erdal

The purpose of this study was to determine maximal isometric strength with bilateral and unilateral muscle contractions and investigate maximal strength training whether or not influenced on this bilateral deficit. For this reason, 34 amateur soccer player (age = 17 ± 2.51 years) were divided into three groups as bilateral training group (n=14), unilateral training group (n=10) and control group (n=10). The unilateral training group performed maximal leg press exercise using each leg unilaterally. The bilateral leg training group was performed to leg press exercise using simultaneously bilateral legs. The control group wasn't trained. The groups in training continued these resistance exercises as 1 hour a day, 3 days a week, for 12 weeks. The improvement in strength brought by training was compared as bilateral training group and unilateral training group. Bilateral deficit also was calculated between two groups. The strength in the trained limbs during training was measured in 4th weak (after four weeks) and 12th weak (after twelve weeks). It was determined that maximal isometric strength of two training groups was increased significantly by strength trainings (p<0.05). There wasn't any significant difference at strength increase for first four weeks of training period (p>0.05). It was determined that strength was increased significantly for final weeks of training period (p<0.05). The other important consequence of this study was determined that maximal strength training had significant effect on bilateral deficit (p<0.05). As a consequence of this study, maximal strength trainings which involved bilateral muscle contractions were effective for reducing of bilateral deficit.

EFFECT OF THE BODY CONDITION SCORE ON SOME REPRODUCTION AND MILK YIELD TRAITS OF SWEDISH RED AND WHITE COWS

    Bayram, B.; Aksakal, V.; Akbulut, O.

This study examined the effect of body condition score (BCS) at calving and during the first month of lactation on some reproduction and milk yield traits of Swedish Red and White (SRW) cows organically raised in Turkey. For this purpose, SRW cows divided two groups, named as thin (BCS <3.00) and moderate (BCS >= 3.00). The actual milk yield (815 kg) and 305 day daily milk yield (736 kg) of cows with low condition score at calving were significantly (P<0.01) higher than those with moderate condition score. The BCS at calving did not have an effect on the lactation length, peak daily milk yield and days to attain peak milk yield. The condition score obtained in the first month of lactation only affected the peak daily milk yield (P<0.05), while its impact on the other characteristics was non-significant. The service period of the cows with low condition score at calving was significantly longer (19.9 day) and their number of services per conception was significantly lower (0.37 units) (P<0.05) than moderate group. The condition loss was calculated as 0.0137 units in the thin group and 0.2290 units in the moderate group and this differences were significant (P<0.01) during the first 30 day period of lactation. The phenotypic correlation between BCS at calving and milk yield traits were negative and significant (P<0.01). According to this relationship, actual milk yield (r=-0.208), 305 day milk yield (r=-0.248) and peak daily milk yield (r=-0.251) decreased significantly (P<0.01) with the increase in the BCS at calving. The service periods of cows with low condition scores at calving were significantly longer (P<0.01).

Çobanoglu, Ufuk; Kara, Volkan; Yalçinkaya, Irfan; Er, Metin; Isik, Ahmet Feridun; Sayir, Fuat; Mergan, Duygu

Background: This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of patients with traumatic rupture of diaphragm (TDR), the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches used in these cases and and the outcomes of the patients. Methods: Forty-one patients (31 males, 10 females; mean age 41.9 years; range 7 to 71 years) with thoracoabdominal trauma and diagnosis of TDR who were treated in our clinic between January 2000 and January 2010 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were statistically compared in terms of age, gender, the time of diagnosis (early or late), the diagnostic procedures that were performed, whether the diagnosis of rupture was made during or after the operation, the localization of the rupture, the diameter of the rupture, accompanying injuries, the surgery performed, mortality and morbidity and the trauma injury severity score. Results: The etiology for the diaphragmatic rupture was blunt trauma in 43.9% and penetrating trauma in 56.10% of the patients. 85.36% of the patients were diagnosed in early stage and 14.64% in late stage. Herniation dignosis was made radiologically in 118 (43.9%) patients and diaphragmatic rupture was detected during the operation in 23 patients (56.1%). Twenty-nine (70.73%) patients had thoracotomy, seven (17.02%) patients had laparatomy and five (12.19%) patients had thoracotomy plus laparatomy. The overall mortality rate was 14.63% (n=6). Conclusion: Traumatic diaphragmatic ruptures may have a fatal course depending on the strangulation of the herniating abdominal viscera. Traumatic diaphgram rupture should be suspected in all multitraumatic patients and these cases shuld be seriously evaluated for the definitive diagnosis and treatment plan.

Construction stage analysis of fatih sultan mehmet suspension bridge

Günaydin, Murat; Adanur, Suleyman; Altunisik, Ahmet Can; Sevim, Baris

In this study, it is aim to perform the construction stage analysis of suspension bridges using time dependent material properties. Fatih Sultan Mehmet Suspension Bridge connecting the Europe and Asia in Istanbul is selected as an example. Finite element models of the bridge are modelled using SAP2000 program considering project drawing. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength variations and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Because of the fact that the bridge has steel structural system, only prestressing steel relaxation is considered as time dependent material properties. The structural behaviour of the bridge at different construction stages has been examined. Two different finite element analyses with and without construction stages are carried out and results are compared with each other. As analyses result, variation of the displacement and internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge deck and towers are given with detail. It is seen that construction stage analysis has remarkable effect on the structural behaviour of the bridge.
