Comparing Physics Textbooks in Terms of Assessment and Evaluation Tools

    Takaoglu, Zeynep Baskan

Assessment and evaluation instruments provide teachers the opportunity of shaping education in the beginning, contributing to education during the process and evaluating education at the end of the process. Textbooks, on the other hand, are resources that present the aforementioned contributions to teachers at first hand. Thus, the study aims to compare the distribution of assessment and evaluation instruments in the physics textbooks being used in the academic year of 2011-2012 and 2016-2017 according to units, settlement within units and types of assessment instruments that are used. For that purpose, 9, 10, 11 and 12th grade textbooks being used in physics lessons in the academic year of 2011-2012 and 2016-2017 were examined via document analysis method. As a result of the study, it was determined that the highest number of assessment instruments in physics textbooks from two different years was encountered in the unit of force and motion. The reason for this unit having higher number of questions could be associated with higher number of mathematical operations in the unit intended for allowing students to overcome their mathematical deficiencies by practicing such questions. It was observed that the number of questions was increased especially in the books being used in the academic year of 2016-2017 and alternative assessment instruments were fewer than traditional assessment instruments. Traditional assessment instruments are still used very frequently in the textbooks, which proves the effect of traditional approaches in assessment and evaluation. Another reason for this condition is that a result-oriented evaluation is used in the university entrance exam. In the light of these results, it is suggested to make the university exam student-centered rather than making an arrangement in textbooks.

IDENTITIES AND LIFESTYLES IN THE AGE OF MEDIATISATION: AN APPROACH OF UNIVERSAL PRAGMATICS FOR COMPERATIVE ANALYSIS OF MAGAZINE PAGES FROM USA AND TURKEY

Okuroglu, Mehmet Selahattin; Solik, M; Rybansky, R

As the communication apparatus of modern system, mass media is still determinative for forming and disseminating life-styles. Since the emergence of welfare societies, presentation of life-styles in media has been considered as a tool to make use of working masses' leisure to gain profit and consent. However, from the viewpoint of critical theory, situation is more complex, relating to every aspects of modern life and shaping the ways of socialisation worldwide. The theoretical approach can be offered as a frame for utilizing pragmatics which has been used relatively rare in media studies. Based on this approach, any selected texts or the meanings of texts are not significant, unless they are connected to actions in the society. Therefore, the subject of consideration should be the arguments to be presented to individuals prior to personal actions. To transfer the focus of analyse from the texts to the arguments and to the persuasion, as a linguistic and cognitive process experienced in social level, thematic units in media texts were identified and counted. These groups of symbols or words are the units motivating individuals to choose consumption agendas or life-styles. The method of analysis in this essay had been offered in a former essay of the author, in a theoretical level. In this study, the application of method was demonstrated on magazine contents. Along with the application, theoretical approach has been modified with the help of the author's doctoral thesis, as the theory of critical media literacy. The essay's problem is the examination of magazine contents as argumentation units of instrumentalist system. Accommodating instrumental rationality within the mediated communication, similar journalistic codes can be adopted by media organizations in different countries. Therefore, in the context of globalization, celebrities page of CNN news site from USA and magazine page (Kelebek) of Hurriyet news site from Turkey were analysed. These sites could be approved for any studies because of their outstanding roles in monopolistic media groups. In addition to this, CNN has a global recognition due to the central position of USA for the system. In this case, magazine content themes, which use to construct schemas of perception and coverage at all, has been analysed as indicators of a global process persisting from the centre to the periphery. Results supported such a common process with some local differences. The method of the study can be considered a tool to describe mediatisation as a global process.

Some approximations of second order derivatives complex-valued functions

    Ashyralyyev, Ch; Ozturk, B.

In this paper, we generalize the well known finite difference method to compute derivatives of real valued function to approximate of second order complex derivatives w(zz) and w((zz) over bar) for complex-valued function w. Exploring different combinations of terms, we derive several approximations to compute the second order derivatives of complex-valued function. Several second order of accuracy finite differences to calculate derivatives are proposed. Error analysis in test examples is carried out by using Matlab program.

Do We Need Friendship in the Workplace? The Theory of Workplace Friendship and Employee Outcomes: The Role of Work Ethics

    Ozbek, Mehmet Ferhat

This study builds and tests the models that two types of workplace friendships (friendship with coworkers and friendship with the supervisor) may have a negative influence on employees'job insecurity and turnover intention. Further, this study assumes that the positive association between workplace friendship with a supervisor and job performance is stronger for employees having a low work ethic than for those with a high work ethic. This study also assumes that the negative relationship between friendship with a supervisor and organizational deviance is stronger for employees who have a low work ethic but not for those with a high work ethic. To test these hypotheses, 313 data samples have been collected from service sector employees. According to the results, two types of workplace friendships (friendship with coworkers and friendship with a supervisor) are negatively related to job insecurity and turnover intention. The results also show that friendship with a supervisor was positively associated with job performance for employees having a low work ethic but not for those with a high work ethic. Furthermore, the results show that friendship with a supervisor was negatively associated with organizational deviance for employees having a low work ethic but not for those with a high work ethic. Surprisingly, the friendship with a supervisor is positively associated with organizational deviance for employees having a high work ethic.

DETECTION OF THE COMPLEX GROUND PROBLEMS BY GROUND PENETRATING RADAR: EXAMPLES FROM GUMUSHANE UNIVERSITY

    Sari, Mahmut; Öztürk, Serkan

In this study, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technique was used for the detection of i) the reasons of deformations which occur in the field ground of Gumushane University Sport Complex (GUSC), and ii) the congestion in flow pipe of Gumushane University, Engineering and Natural Sciences Faculty (GUENSF). GPR data was collected by using the RAMAC CU II device and a shielded antenna with a 500 MHz center frequency. The wave fields for GUSC were examined by 2D and 3D processing. The large-scaled hyperbolic reflections are in corresponds to the areas where the field ground has deformations. It is considered that these anomaly areas may include a gap or a padding having a large gap and suggested that these damaged areas must be full with hard materials. The large-scaled hyperbolic reflections approximately starts in one-meter depth and reaches three-meters. For GUENSF, the measurements were conducted on the route where the main flow pipe crosses. In GPR sections, hyperbolas with high amplitudes were observed in the zones where flow pipe passes. Information on slope of flow pipe was provided by examining the association of these hyperbolas with the depth, and the clogged zones were detected. It is stated that unclogging the clogged zones of the flow pipe will not fully contribute to the resolution of the problem. Therefore, it is suggested to provide necessary slope to the flow pipe by completely removing and mounting back. These results show that GPR technique is an effective tool to provide a good image and solution for the complex ground problems.

    Ülger, F.; Küçuk, M. Pehlivanlar; Kucuk, A. O.; Ilkaya, N. K.; Murat, N.; Bilgiç, B.; Abanoz, H.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of AKI development on mortality with four different classification systems (RIFLE, AKIN, CK, KDIGO) in critically ill trauma patients followed in the intensive care unit. A retrospective review of 2034 patients in our intensive care unit was conducted between July 2010 and August 2013. A total of 198 patients with primary trauma were included in the study to evaluate the development of AKI. When the presence of AKI was investigated according to the four criteria (RIFLE, AKIN, CK, and KDIGO), the highest incidence of AKI was found according to the KDIGO classification (74.2%), followed by AKIN (72.2%), RIFLE (69.7%), and CK (59.1%). It was observed that more AKI developed according to KDIGO in patients with multiple trauma and thoracic trauma (p = 0.031, p = 0.029). Sixty-two (31%) of the 198 trauma patients monitored in the intensive care unit died; mortality was frequently found high in AKI stage 2 and 3 patients. According to the CK classification, there was a significant increase in mortality in patients with AKI on the first day (p = 0.045). AKI classifications by RIFLE, AKIN, CK, and KDIGO were independently associated with the risk of in-hospital death. In this study, the presence of AKI was found to be an independent risk factor in the development of in-hospital mortality according to all classification systems (RIFLE, AKIN, CK, and KDIGO) in critically traumatic patients followed in ICU, and the compatibility between RIFLE, AKIN, and KDIGO was the highest among the classification systems.

Demir, Selim; Turan, Ibrahim; Aliyazicioglu, Yuksel

Rhododendron luteum belongs to the genus Rhododendron, members of which are frequently used in folk medicine. Various studies have investigated the cytotoxic effect of different Rhododendron species, but there have been limited studies of the cytotoxic effect of R. luteum. The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant properties and cytotoxic effect of R. luteum leaf extract on the human cancer cells. The total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and reducing power of the extract were evaluated using spectrophotometric procedures. The cytotoxic effect of the extract on five cancers (human breast, colon, lung, prostate, and liver carcinoma) and human fibroblast cells was determined using the MTT assay. TPC and reducing power values of extract were found 173.2 +/- 3.97 mg gallic acid equivalents, and 629.5 +/- 3.49 mg trolox equivalents per g sample, respectively. R. luteum leaf extract exhibited selective cytotoxicity especially against colon (1.9 fold) and liver (2.2 fold) cancer cells compared to normal fibroblast cells. This is the first study to reveal the cytotoxic effect of R. luteum leaf extract. Further studies are now needed to identify the cytotoxic molecules in the extract and their mechanisms.

TRIP OPTIMIZATION FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS WITH LINEAR GOAL PROGRAMMING (LGP) METHOD

Tekin, Sezgin; Köfteci, Sevil; Aydin, Metin Mutlu; Yildirim, Mehmet Sinan

Determination of the optimum trip schedules is an important problem for public transportation systems. It is complex task to assign optimum number of vehicles and determine the trip schedules for a public transport systems which consist of many routes. In the case of taking infrequent trip schedules, the existing passenger demand is not satisfied. Therefore waiting times are increased in the bus stops. In contrary, with more frequent intervals, unutilized capacity and higher operational costs are expected. Also, intense traffic density and environmental pollution are associated with the frequent trips. The optimum trip frequencies of the passenger demands varies during the hours of a day and is important for passenger satisfaction and operation efficiency of the system. Trip scheduling and vehicle assignment studies take attention in the current literature assisted with different optimization techniques and artificial intelligence method. In this study, only 10 different bus routes which is operated privately, were considered in the city center of Antalya and the Linear Goal Programming (LGP) was used to determine the optimum number of vehicles operated on the routes. The study results showed that the existing system performance can be preserved by reducing the frequency of specific trips and LGP is stated as an efficient algorithm for determining the optimum trip frequencies and number of vehicles in a public transportation systems.

Automated Model Updating of Historical Masonry Structures Based on Ambient Vibration Measurements

Altunisik, Ahmet Can; Okur, Fatih Yesevi; Genç, Ali Fuat; Günaydin, Murat; Adanur, Suleyman

Finite-element (FE) model updating is a very effective procedure for determining the uncertainty parameters in a structural model and minimize differences between experimentally and analytically identified dynamic characteristics. This procedure can be practiced with manual and global/local automatic model updating procedures. Automatic model updating is very popular because of its applicability to all kinds of engineering structures to minimize differences, and its damage localization and structural health monitoring. This paper considers a historical masonry bastion to obtain its dynamic characteristics numerically with the finite-element method and experimentally with ambient vibration tests (AVTs). Sensitivity analyses for the uncertainty parameters and manual and automated model updating to minimize differences are also performed. A castle bastion located in Trabzon, Turkey is selected as an application. The FE model of structure is developed in commercial software. The first three natural frequencies are obtained between 5 and 10Hz, and AVTs are performed under natural excitation using enhanced frequency domain decomposition (EFDD) and subspace structural identification (SSI) techniques. The first three natural frequencies are obtained between 4 and 7Hz. The comparison of analytically and experimentally identified dynamic characteristics shows a close agreement between mode shapes, but 26% difference in natural frequencies. To minimize the difference, the FE model of the bastion is updated using manual and global/local automated updating, changing its material properties of Young's modulus and material density. The maximum differences are reduced from 27 to 3% with manual updating, and to 0.02% with automated model updating.

COMPARISON OF FEM SOLUTION WITH ANALYTICAL SOLUTION OF CONTINUOUS AND DISCONTINUOUS CONTACT PROBLEM

Kaya, Yusuf; Polat, Alper; Özsahin, Talat Sukru

The continuous and discontinuous contact problem of a homogeneous layer loaded with three rigid flat blocks and resting on the elastic semi-infinite plane was investigated in this study by using the finite element method (FEM). All surfaces are assumed to be frictionless. The homogenous layer was loaded by means of three rigid flat blocks whose external loads are Q and P (per unit thickness in z direction). Two dimensional finite element analysis of the problem was performed using ANSYS package program. Analyzes were performed for loading conditions which are Q=P, Q=2P, Q=4P, Q=8P and Q=10P, and different values of block widths, distances between blocks and shear modulus. The initial separation loads and initial separation distances (lambda(cr), chi(cr)) between the homogeneous layer and the elastic semi-infinite plane were determined for continuous contact condition. The length of the separation zone was obtained for discontinuous contact condition. In addition to these, normal stress distributions between the layer and the semi-infinite plane were determined for continuous and discontinuous contact conditions. As a result of the study, the analytical results, and the results of the finite element method were shown by comparing as graphs and tables.

Comparison of Different Dynamic Contrast Enhanced-Magnetic Resonance Imaging Descriptors and Clinical Findings Among Breast Cancer Subtypes Determined Based on Molecular Assessment

Dogan, Serap; Ozmen, Soner; Oz, Bahadir; Imamoglu, Hakan; Kahriman, Guven; Zararsiz, Gokmen; Ozturk, Mustafa

Background: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease with different molecular and histologic subtypes, clinical behaviors and prognosis. The same stage of disease and similar histopathological characteristics may show different treatment responses. Identification of breast cancer subtypes has become important for planning the targeted therapy and personalized management of patients. Objectives: To compare the clinicopathologic findings, dynamic contrast enhanced-magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) characteristics and associated MRI findings among breast cancer molecular subtypes. Patients and Methods: 267 pathologically proven invasive breast cancers in 263 patients were included. Clinicopathological findings, DCE-MRI findings and associated MRI findings were retrospectively evaluated and compared among breast cancer subtypes. Results: Invasive ductal carcinoma was the most common histological tumor type (87.6%). There were 222 (83.1%) masses and 45 (16.9%) non-mass enhancements. The molecular subtypes were luminal A in 174 (65.1%), luminal B in 45 (16.9%), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positive in 24 (9%) and triple negative (TN) in 24 (9%) of the lesions. Spiculated mass margin was significantly associated with luminal A breast cancer (45.2%) and irregular shape was significantly more common in luminal A (86.3%) and luminal B lesions (95.1%) (P < 0.001). Larger mass size (P= 0.027), non-mass enhancement (P= 0.005), perilesional+ prepectoral edema and skin + perilesional+ prepectoral edema were significantly associated with HER2 positive breast cancer (P= 0.001). Higher histological grade, oval mass shape, circumscribed mass margin, intratumoral high/very high signal intensity on T2 weighted image (T2WI) were significantly associated with TN breast cancer (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Histological grade, size and morphological features of masses on DCE-MRI, intratumoral signal intensity on T2WI and edema pattern would be helpful to distinguish breast cancer subtypes.
