The New Disease of the Modern Age: What Is the Fear of Missing Out FOMO? A Review

Erdogan, Ali; Yilmaz, Yavuz; Hocaoglu, Cicek

Social networks have become a very important part of human life in recent years. This situation has led to new definitions such as the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). FOMO can be defined as the concern that others can have a good experience when the person is absent and therefore the person wants to stay on social networks constantly to avoid missing anything. It is especially common in young people. Problematic internet use, psychosocial factors, social network use and anxiety are blamed in its etiology. Family conflicts, loneliness, depression, and low self-efficacy can be said as risk factors. People constantly want to spend time on social networks, daily life activities are blocked and the person's productivity decreases. It has no place in diagnostic classifications. For FOMO, the fear of missing out scale developed by Przybylski can be used. It is reported that FOMO has a significant positive relationship with nomophobia. There is no specific treatment method. There is a need for extensive research on FOMO.

Bostan, Sedat; Agac, Gokhan; Sahinöz, Saime

Aim: The COVID-19 pandemic began in China and has now spread across the whole world, and many countries such as Turkey are still fighting against this pandemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of precautionary and normalization steps taken by the Turkish government on the number of confirmed cases, current cases, and deaths due to the COVID-19 in Turkey. Materials and Methods: The study used exponential regression models to estimate the number of confirmed cases, deaths, and current cases. The study data were collected from the Turkish Ministry of Health, Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the national public broadcaster of Turkey. Results: The precautions taken during the COVID-19 pandemic have caused the exponentially increasing number of cases to be brought under control and to decrease exponentially. The normalization steps taken paused the exponential decrease in the number of cases and caused the number of cases to remain flat during the summer months and then rise again. If the normalization steps were not implemented and the precautions taken continued in the same way, it was calculated that the numbers of COVID-19 current cases would be reset on June 26, 2020. The total number of deaths would remain at 4423 and the total number of confirmed cases would be 150586. Discussion: As a result, the impact of precautionary and normalization steps on the course of the COVID-19 pandemic was examined. It has been observed that the impact of these steps on the pandemic is exponential. The results provide guidelines for health authorities and administrators to take necessary precautions.

Erectile dysfunction treatment with Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors: Google trends analysis of last 10 years and COVID-19 pandemic

    Deger, Muslim Dogan; Madendere, Serdar

Objectives: We aimed to analyze the trend change of the most popular Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors (PDE5i) over time and geography by using Google Trends (GT) data in 10 years period and COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods: GT is able to generate a line-graph, showing how interest has increased or decreased over a period within specific territories. The search values for specific terms are indexed as relative search volume (RSV), which is presented on a scale from 0-100. Avarage annual percentage change (AAPC) and RSV were analyzed to evaluate gain or loss of interest in trends. Search terms were generated for Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved PDE5i; tadalafil, sildenafil, vardenafil, avanafil, and their most-used brand names. The data was within worldwide from 1 January 2010, to 31 December 2020, using the global query category. Results: The overall interest in PDE5i has doubled. Sildenafil has become the most trend PDE5i of today with a regular increase (AAPC: 0.016, p < 0.01). Although the search trend of tadalafil remained almost constant until 2014, the rate of increase in the last 6 years raised and tadalafil has become the 2nd most popular PDE5i recently (AAPC: 0.007, p < 0.01). For vardenafil there has been a decreased interest (AAPC: -0.009, p < 0.01). There is no significant change in avanafil trend (AAPC: 0.000, p: 0.5). All PDE5i interest on GT decreased notably from February to June 2020. But after June, search trends reached the level before the COVID-19 period in a month. Conclusions: These findings show us, with its increasing prevalence, erectile dysfunction (ED) has become a major public health problem. People from different geographies search the Internet for ED treatment options. Patients should be informed that ED may be the first sign of many comorbid diseases, and patients with ED should be referred to a health institution for diagnosis and treatment.

Sayilan, Samet; Mert, Meral; Kulakac, Nursen

Aim: Hirsutism is a disease involving increased terminal hair growth in women with a male-type distribution pattern in androgen-sensitive areas such as the chin, upper lip, chest, abdomen, back, and thighs. Our review of the available literature revealed no previous studies concerning the role of the peripheral blood neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), an easily calculated and noninvasive marker, in hirsutism. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between androgen levels and NLR in female patients diagnosed with hirsutism. Material and Methods: The files of 392 patients presenting to the Bakirkoy Dr. Sadi Konuk Education and Research Hospital due to hirsutism between 2018 and 2020 were included in this cross-sectional, retrospective study. Patients' hirsutism and menstrual cycles, age at menarche, number of pregnancies in the case of married women, number of living children, and history of infertility were investigated. Hyperandrogenemia findings, such as hair loss and acne, were also recorded. Patients' biochemical and complete blood count parameters were evaluated. Results: The mean age of the participants was 26.27 +/- 6.37 years (min-max: 16-48), and their androgen levels were statistically significantly associated with high-density lipoprotein, hemoglobin, hematocrit, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, and HbA1c levels (p<0.05). However, no significant relationship was found between patients' androgen levels and NLR values (p>0.05). Discussion: No significant relationship was determined in this study between androgen levels and NLR values in women diagnosed with hirsutism. Due to the limited numbers of previous similar studies, further research with larger patient numbers is now needed.

Correlation of bilateral and ipsilateral strength ratios with balance in female taekwondo athletes

Yilmaz, Ali Kerim; Yilmaz, Coskun; Karaduman, Emre; Mayda, Muhammet Hakan; Erail, Serhat; Bostanci, Ozgur; Kabadayi, Menderes

This study aimed to analyze preferred leg (PLs) and non-preferred leg (NPLs) isokinetic knee strength, lateral asymmetry ratios and to examine their correlation with static balance. Sixteen female taekwondo (TKD) athletes voluntarily participated in the study. Knee isokinetic extension (Ex) and flexion (Flx) strength were measured in concentric / concentric (Con / Con) contractions at angular velocities of 60 degrees/s, 180 degrees/s, and 240 degrees/s. Ipsilateral hamstring / quadriceps (H/Q) and bilateral (H/H and Q/Q) ratios were calculated. Static balances were determined by taking the center of body pressure in X (COPX) and Y (COPY) axis. Paired sample t-test and Pearson correlation tests were used in statistical analysis. When the isokinetic knee strength was examined, it was found that 60 degrees/s angular velocity parameter was significantly different in Flx phase while 180 degrees/s and 240 degrees/s angular velocities were found to be significantly different in Ex phase in favor of PLs. There was no significance in bilateral and ipsilateral strength ratios of all angular velocities. There was a significant correlation between 240 degrees/s HQ and COPX in terms of ipsilateral asymmetry ratios whereas a significant correlation was found between 60 degrees/s HH and COPX in terms of bilateral asymmetry ratios. It was found that there were differences in strength between PL and NPLs, but no asymmetry was observed. There was no high level of correlation between lateral asymmetry ratios and balance in female TKD practitioners.

Upper extremity arterial thromboembolism in a patient with severe COVID-19 pneumonia: A case report

Bilge, Aysegul; Karasoy, Ismail; Neziroglu, Elif; Güner, Yesim

Although novel coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) primarily affects the respiratory system, it can affect multiple organ systems, leading to serious complications, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and multiple organ failure. Nearly 20 to 55% of patients with COVID-19 experience coagulation disorders that cause high mortality in line with the severity of the clinical picture. Thromboembolism can be observed in both venous and arterial systems. The vast majority of thromboembolic events are associated with the venous system and are often observed as pulmonary embolism. Arterial thromboembolisms often involve the arteries in the lower extremities, followed by those in the upper extremities. Herein, we report a rare case of COVID-19 pneumonia whose left arm was amputated at the forearm level after arterial thromboembolism in the left upper extremity. This case report is valuable, as it is the first reported case of upper extremity arterial thromboembolism in Turkey, as well as the only case in the literature in which the patient underwent four surgical interventions and is still alive.

Investigation of the Cytotoxic Effect of Ethyl Pyruvate on Various Cancer Cell Lines

Ayazoglu Demir, Elif; Demir, Selim; Turan, Ibrahim

Ethyl pyruvate (EP) is a simple aliphatic ester derived from pyruvic acid which is an endogenous metabolite. Although various studies have investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of EP, there has been only limited research into the cytotoxic effect of EP on cancer cells. The aim of this study was to determine the cytotoxic effects of EP on cells representing common cancer types. EP was purchased commercially and intermediate stock solutions were prepared with phosphate buffer saline. The cytotoxic effect of EP on human melanoma (VMM917), cervix (HeLa), breast (MCF-7), lung (A549), liver (HepG2), colon (WiDr) cancer and normal fibroblast (BJ) cells was determined using the MTT assay. Cisplatin was used as a positive control in cytotoxicity experiments. The results showed that EP exhibits selective cytotoxic effect on VMM917 (10.1-fold) and HeLa (3.04-fold) cells compared to BJ cells. This study shows for the first time that EP has a highly selective cytotoxic effect, especially on melanoma and cervix cancer cells. The mechanism of this effect needs to be elucidated by more extensive studies.

Does evaluation of tumor volume or/both origination site better guide to optimal surgery for inverted papilloma?

Sahin, Muammer Melih; Yilmaz, Metin; Zorlu, Mehmet Ekrem; Göcek, Mehmet; Düzlü, Mehmet; Sayar, Erolcan; Ceylan, Alper

Introduction: Sinonasal inverted papilloma is noted for its high rate of recurrence. Staging systems aid to reduce recurrence and avoid excessive surgeries by guiding the selection of the optimal surgical approach. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of different endoscopic approaches in inverted papilloma by assessing tumor origin site and tumor volume. Methods: Krouse classification system that is based on tumor volume was used for staging; furthermore, tumor origin sites were grouped as lateral nasal wall, medial wall and other walls of maxillary sinus. The main treatment method for all patients was endoscopic sinus surgery. Endoscopic extended middle meatal antrostomy, endoscopic Caldwell-Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were the additional surgery types performed in different combinations. Results: Fifty-five patients (42 male) with a mean 54.9 +/- 14.4 years of age were included. 37 patients were diagnosed with advanced stage inverted papilloma (67.2 %). Recurrence was observed in 12 patients (21.8 %). In early stage lateral nasal wall origination, no recurrence was observed in the simple tumor resection group (0/10). In early stage medial wall origination, no recurrence was observed in the extended middle meatal antrostomy group (0/8). In advanced stage medial wall origination, the recurrence rates of extended middle meatal antrostomy, extended middle meatal antrostomy + endoscopic Caldwell- Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were 100.0 %, 53.8 % and 13.6 %, respectively (p =0.002). In advanced stage other walls of maxillary sinus origination, recurrence rates of extended middle meatal antrostomy + endoscopic Caldwell-Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were 20 % and 16.6 %, respectively (p =0.887). Conclusion: Tumor origin site, tumor stage and surgery types show an impact on recurrence. Despite the fact that tumor origin site singly could lead to appropriate selection of the surgery type in most cases, tumor stage carries substantial importance in selection of surgery type for sinonasal-inverted papilloma. An operation plan regarding both tumor volume and tumor origin site may aid surgeons in selecting optimal endoscopic surgical method to avoid recurrence or excessive surgeries. Relationship between Political and Financial Risks in Turkey: Evidence from Fourier Cointegration Analysis Regarding Institutional Structures; [Türkiye’de Politik ve Finansal Riskler Arasındaki İlişki: Kurumsal Yapılara Dair Fourier Eşbütünleşme Analizinden Kanıt]

    Çiçen, Yıldırım Beyazıt

Institutional structure and quality of management are the main elements that form the political risks. Political threats are directly linked to the institutional structure and the institutional design. Political risks increase if the government mechanisms fail. Increasing institutional quality reduces the political risks and positively impacts the financial risks. Monthly data from different indices are used to analyse the relationship between Turkey's political risks and financial risks between 2002 and 2015. According to the Fourier analysis of cointegration, there is a long-term relationship between the political and financial risks. Besides, as per the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) findings and the Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) models, an increase in the political risk increases the financial risk.

Effect of using chia seed powder on physicochemical, rheological, thermal, and texture properties of ice cream

    Ürkek, Bayram

In this study, a mixture of salep and chia seed powder (CSP) at different ratios was used as a stabilizer in the production of ice cream. The effect of the mixtures was determined on the physical, chemical, color, rheological, thermal properties, instrumental hardness, and consumer acceptance properties of the ice cream samples. The viscosity, consistency coefficient, lightness (L*), whiteness index, (Formula presented.) (midpoint and offset), heat ice freezing, and melting values increased in the sample containing 0.6% salep and 0.2% CSP compared to the control sample and then decreased in accordance with the increment of CSP. The highest hardness value was determined in the sample containing CSP (0.8%). The control sample and sample containing 0.6% salep/0.2% CSP had the highest consumer acceptance scores. It was determined that 0.2% CSP could be used with salep to decrease the consumption of orchid species and to improve various quality properties of ice creams. Practical applications: Salep (Orchidaceae family) is generally used as a stabilizer in ice cream, and species of salep is been extinction day to day. This study indicated that the usage of the mixture of salep and chia seed powder can improve the quality properties of ice creams. Consequently, the mixture of salep (75%) and chia seed powder (25%) could be used as a stabilizer to reduce using salep and to protect species of salep to improve the quality properties of ice cream.

Evaluation of ultrasonication and agitation extraction methods at different conditions on the phenolic composition and antioxidant activities of mammillaria prolifera

    BURNAZ, NESIBE ARSLAN

The study focuses on the comparative evaluation of extraction methods (ultrasonication and agitation) based on phenolic composition and antioxidative activities of Mammillaria prolifera and it is the first report on this subject. The effects of extraction conditions of temperature (25° and 60°), time (15, 30 and 60 min) and solvent type (water and 70 % and 100 % methanol) on total phenolic compounds, 2,2'-azinobis( 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl anti-radical activities and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power values were determined. Moreover, the phenolic acid compositions of the extracts were investigated by high performance liquid chromatography. The extracts prepared with the ultrasonic method showed stronger antioxidant activity than those prepared with agitation methods. In both methods total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity values were the lowest in the aqueous extracts. The results showed a positive correlation observed between total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities of the studied extracts. The optimal conditions for the extraction of phenolic compounds from Mammillaria prolifera were found as 60 min extraction time, 60° extraction temperature and 70 % methanol concentration by using the ultrasonication method. Notably, protocatechualdehyde, gallic acid, para hydroxy benzoic acid and ferulic acid were identified in Mammillaria prolifera by using the high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector system and 14 phenolic standards. Consequently, Mammillaria prolifera cladodes can be used in food or pharmaceutical practices, as a potential natural source of antioxidants.

Özyürek, Işıl Nihan; Kıranşan, Murat; Karaca, Semra

In this study, the synergistic effect of photocatalysis and ozonation processes to degrade the sulfamethoxazole (SMX), one antibiotic pharmaceutical compound, has been studied through the influence of main operational variables such as zinc oxide/montmorillonite (ZnO/MMT) dos-age, SMX initial concentration, ozone flow rate, pH and the addition of organic and inorganic scavengers. Synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were immobilized on the montmorillonite surface to prepare ZnO/MMT catalyst as a photocatalyst. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray fluo-rescence, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscope and N2 adsorption/desorption. The highest SMX degradation efficiency (80.84% for 30 min of reaction time) was obtained for the photocatalytic ozonation process compared to adsorption, single ozonation, catalytic ozonation, and photolysis. ZnO/MMT was more effective photocatalyst according to ZnO, indicating its usability as a promising photocatalyst for the removal of organic contaminants in aqueous solutions. The reduced degradation efficiency with the addition of organic and inorganic scavengers showed the important role of the photo-produced radicals and holes as well as direct ozonation in SMX degradation. A mechanism is also proposed for photocatalytic ozonation degradation by using the gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis method. Finally, several by-products were identified by GC-MS analysis, which allowed to depict a possible mechanism for the sulfamethoxazole degradation.
