How human capital affects labor income share at the sectoral level?: Evidence from the EU-13 countries and the UK

    Çelik, Orkun

Purpose The author investigates the effects of human capital on labor income share in the 15 sectors of the European Union (EU)-13 countries and the United Kingdom (UK) over the period 2008-2015. Design/methodology/approach The author employs pooled ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation with panel data, using the EU KLEMS database. Findings The results show that when education level increases, labor income share increases and gender-based labor income share differentials decrease. Return to education is higher in qualitative sectors in contrast with the other sectors. Moreover, there are gender-based labor income share differentials at the sectoral level. These differentials are higher in nonqualitative sectors, while they are relatively lower in qualitative sectors. Research limitations/implications The biggest limitation of the study is that the data range cannot be expanded because of the database. The author is of opinion that the empirical findings will guide to policy makers in terms of wage setting. Originality/value The expected contribution of this study to the literature is to investigate the effect of human capital on labor income share at the sectoral level for the EU-13 countries and the UK. As far as the author knows, there is no study which investigates this topic at the sectoral level such a comprehensive, in the literature.

Shading Effect of Transparent Photovoltaic Panels on Crops Underneath Agrivoltaic Systems

Esmaeilzad, Nasim Seyedpour; Dino, Ipek Gursel; Güney, Dilara; Yildirim, Yusuf Ersoy; Turan, Rasit; Özden, Talat; Amaducci, S

Agrivoltaic systems combine soil-grown crops with photovoltaic (PV) panels erected several meters above the ground. Combining solar panels and food crops on the same land can maximize land utilization. Under the PV panels, however, microclimate factors like solar radiation, air temperature, humidity, and soil temperature change. An agrivoltaic system must optimize sunlight sharing between solar panels and crops to maximize food energy production. It has been challenging to improve and analyze the performance of agrivoltaic systems due to the lack of a defined crop-specific parameter. In this work, we present a practical option to partially replace bifacial modules with semi-transparent ones, providing comparable levels of crop protection and greater climate change resilience while generating green energy and increasing land-use efficiency. The agrivoltaic system must be tailored to satisfy the needs of crops. For this purpose, a simulation model was conducted, which examined the impact of module transparency and cell layout based on light availability.

Investigation of the Relationship among Fault Types, Focal Depths, and Ionospheric TEC Anomalies before Large Earthquakes between 2000 and 2020

Ulukavak, Mustafa; Yalçinkaya, Mualla; Kayikçi, Emine Tanir; Öztürk, Serkan; Kandemir, Raif; Karsli, Hakan

In this study, the relationships between possible ionospheric total electron content (TEC) anomalies and earthquake focal depths and fault types were investigated using 3,099 global earthquakes with Mw >= 6.0 between 2000 and 2020. The relationship between the ionospheric TEC changes and earthquakes has been previously discussed in the literature. However, very few studies have examined the relationship between the focal depths and the fault types of these earthquakes. In general, three indices, namely the disturbance storm-time index (Dst), the planetary geomagnetic activity index (Kp), and the solar flux (F10.7), are used to characterize the space weather conditions (SWC) that affect TEC anomalies and to identify the active/quiet days for future earthquakes. In this study, 13 different indices were used: indices that measured solar activity included proton flux (Pf) at six different energy levels, F10.7, and extreme ultraviolet (EUV0.1-50 nm and EUV26-34 nm). Meanwhile, geomagnetic storm indices included Dst, Kp, the z-component of the magnetic field index (Bz), and proton density (P-d). By using the ionospheric TEC values derived from global ionosphere maps (GIM-TEC), both negative and positive ionospheric TEC anomalies were observed for 15 days before and 4 days after the earthquakes using a statistical analysis technique that involved a 15-day moving median. The earthquakes were grouped according to their fault types (normal, thrust, and strike-slip) and focal depths (shallow, intermediate, and deep). Their relationships with the negative and positive TEC anomalies in the quiet days before the earthquake were examined. Negative and positive anomalies were observed approximately 3-12 days before earthquakes that occurred on normal faults, approximately 5-8 days before earthquakes that occurred on thrust faults, and approximately 1-12 days before earthquakes that occurred on strike-slip faults. The average TEC anomaly changes were calculated to be 43.4% total electron content unit (TECU) for normal faults, 44.8% TECU for thrust faults, and 41.3% TECU for strike-slip faults. Positive anomaly values were exhibited by larger earthquakes on normal and thrust faults, whereas negative anomaly values tended to occur on strike-slip faults. Negative and positive TEC anomalies were detected around 3-12 days before shallow earthquakes, around 1-13 days before intermediate-depth earthquakes, and around 1-12 days before deep earthquakes. The average TEC anomaly changes were calculated to be 44.4% TECU for shallow earthquakes, 43.3% TECU for intermediate-depth earthquakes, and 42.6% TECU for deep earthquakes. Positive anomaly values were also found to be higher than the negative anomaly values in each group. We propose that there is a relationship between the ionospheric TEC anomalies that occur before large earthquakes and their fault types and focal depths. Serum heparanase levels and left atrial/left atrial appendage thrombus in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation

Yilmaz, Mehmet Fatih; Acar, Emrah; Inanir, Mehmet; Karabay, Can Yucel; Izgi, Ibrahim Akin

Introduction Data regarding the possible role of heparanase (HPA) in the occurrence of left atrial/left atrial appendage (LA/LAA) thrombus in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is lacking. The goal of the present study was to assess the association between plasma levels of HPA and LA/LAA thrombus in AF. Methods A total of 687 patients with nonvalvular AF (NVAF) without anticoagulation therapy were included from January 2016 to June 2019. Serum HPA analysis was performed with a commercially available human ELISA kit. Logistic regression models were used to test for association. Results Serum HPA levels were significantly higher in patients with LA/LAA thrombus than in those without LA/LAA thrombus (270.8 [193.4 +/- 353.2] pg/mL vs 150.3 [125.2 +/- 208.4] pg/mL; P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, serum HPA remained a significantly independent predictor of LA/LAA thrombus (odds ratio 1.674, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.339-2.289, P < 0.001). In the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, HPA showed a predictive value with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.757 (95% CI 0.652-0.810, P < 0.001). The optimal cutoff level for HPA predicting LA/LAA thrombus was 210.7 pg/mL, with a sensitivity of 74.3% and a specificity of 64.8%. Conclusion An elevated HPA level was associated with the presence of LA/LAA thrombus in patients with AF. HPA might portend the risk for the prothrombotic state in AF patients.

Ürkek, Bayram; Gürmeriç, Huseyin Ender; Sengül, Mustafa; Baltaci, Cemalettin

In the present study, four different ice creams were produced using cow, buffalo, goat, and sheep milk. The physicochemical, sensory properties and aroma profile analyzes of ice creams were carried out and the differences were evaluated. Dry matter rates of cow ice cream (CIC), goat ice cream (GIC), sheep ice cream (SIC) and buffalo ice cream (BIC) ranged from 27.96% to 30.51% and SIC had the highest content of dry matter (30.51%). Ash values of ice creams were determined between 0.61% and 0.75%. Titra-table acidity values varied between 0.11% and 0.18%. pH values of ice creams ranged from 6.49 to 7.04. Fat values of ice creams were determined between 4.05 (g/100g) and 5.10 (g/100g). The lowest overrun value (20.61%) was determined in SIC. The highest first dripping time (1980 s) and complete melting time (5970 s) were found in GIC. A total of 41 aroma compounds were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the BIC was the most aromatic product containing 36 aroma compounds. After the BIC, 15, 13 and 8 aroma compounds were detected in CIC, GIC and SIC, respectively. Additionally, aroma compounds 2-hexanone, 2-heptanone, limonene, 2-nonanone, 2-undecanone, 2-tridecanone, 2-pentadecanone were detected in all ice cream types. To evaluate the correlations between the aroma compounds, the principal component analysis (PCA) method was applied to ice cream samples and a strong positive relation was detected between CIC and GIC. In terms of sensory analysis, general acceptability properties were not statistically different (p>0.05) between all ice creams. SIC had the lowest flavor score and CIC had the highest one as sensory property.

Simultaneous autonomous system and powerplant design for morphing quadrotors

Sahin, Huseyin; Kose, Oguz; Oktay, Tugrul

Purpose This study aims to optimize autonomous performance (i.e. both longitudinal and lateral) and endurance of the quadrotor type aerial vehicle simultaneously depending on the autopilot gain coefficients and battery weight. Design/methodology/approach Quadrotor design processes are critical to performance. Unmanned aerial vehicle durability is an important performance parameter. One of the factors affecting durability is the battery. Battery weight, energy capacity and discharge rate are important design parameters of the battery. In this study, proper autopilot gain coefficients and battery weight are obtained by using a stochastic optimization method named as simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA). Because there is no direct correlation between battery weight and battery energy density, artificial neural network (ANN) is benefited to obtain battery energy density corresponding to resulted battery weight found from SPSA algorithm. By using the SPSA algorithm optimum performance index is obtained, then obtained data is used for longitudinal and lateral autonomous flight simulations. Findings With SPSA, the best proportional integrator and derivative (PID) coefficients and battery weight, energy efficiency and endurance were obtained in case of morphing. Research limitations/implications It takes a long time to find the most suitable battery values depending on quadrotor endurance. However, this situation can be overcome with the proposed SPSA. Practical implications It is very useful to determine quadrotor endurance, PID coefficients and morphing rate using the optimization method. Social implications Determining quadrotor endurance, PID coefficients and morphing rate using the optimization method provides advantages in terms of time, cost and practicality. Originality/value The proposed method improves quadrotor endurance. In addition, with the SPSA optimization method and ANN, the parameters required for endurance will be obtained faster and more securely. In addition, the energy density according to the battery weight also contributes to the clean environment and energy efficiency.

Evaluation of Serum Procalcitonin, Neutrophil-lymphocyte Ratio and Platelet-lymphocyte Ratio in Pregnancies with Threatened Abortion

Aydin, Sakine Merve; Taskömür, Aysun Tekeli

Objective: The etiology of Threatened Abortion is not clearly known. One of the hypotheses thought to play a role in the pathophysiology of threatened abortion is that bleeding occurring in threatened abortion causes the development of a chronic inflammatory reaction in the decidua. Because of this hypothesis, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between a threatened abortion and inflammatory markers procalcitonin, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). Methods: This is a prospective, controlled study. Serum procalcitonin, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio of 55 pregnant women diagnosed with threatened abortion were compared with the results of 55 healthy pregnant women. ROC analysis of procalcitonin, NLR and PLR was performed for threatened abortions. Results: Procalcitonin and NLR levels were significantly higher in the threatened abortions group than in the control group (p < 0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) in ROC analysis was within the 95% confidence interval for procalcitonin and NLR, both of which were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Procalcitonin and NLR resulted as appropriate parameters as diagnostic decision-makers in predicting threatened abortions. Conclusion: There is an association between procalcitonin and NLR and threatened abortion. This result may support that inflammatory reaction plays a role in the etiology of threatened abortion.

Analysis of discontinuous contact problem in two functionally graded layers resting on a rigid plane by using finite element method

    Polat, Alper; Kaya, Yusuf

In this study, the problem of discontinuous contact in two functionally graded (FG) layers resting on a rigid plane and loaded by two rigid blocks is solved by the finite element method (FEM). Separate analyzes are made for the cases where the top surfaces of the problem layers are metal, the bottom surfaces are ceramic and the top surfaces are ceramic and the bottom surfaces are metal. For the problem, it is accepted that all surfaces are frictionless. A two-dimensional FEM analysis of the problem is made by using a special macro added to the ANSYS package program The solution of this study, which has no analytical solution in the literature, is given with FEM. Analyzes are made by loading different Q and P loads on the blocks. The normal stress (sigma y) distributions at the interfaces of FG layers and between the substrate and the rigid plane interface are obtained. In addition, the starting and ending points of the separations between these surfaces are determined. The normal stresses (sigma x, sigma y) and shear stresses (tau xy) at the point of separation are obtained along the depth. The results obtained are shown in graphics and tables. With this method, effective results are obtained in a very short time. In addition, analytically complex and long problems can be solved with this method.

Segmentation of Pectoral Muscle Region in MLO Mammography Images by Backboned U-Net

Dogan, Ramazan Ozgur; Türe, Hayati; Kayikçioglu, Temel

The pectoral muscle region on MLO mammography images appears prominently similar to suspicious areas. For this reason, Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) systems remove this region to reduce false-positive rates in the mass detection process. In some cases, the pectoral muscle region is exposed to distortions due to the superposition effects caused by the mammography technique. As a result, segmentation error rates of the pectoral muscle region, whose characteristic features are deteriorated, appear. In this study, a method to identify impaired pectoral muscle regions with MobileNetV2 backboned U-Net Deep Learning method is proposed. The proposed method was tested on 84 and 201 mammography images taken from both MIAS and InBreast databases and segmented with 1.81% and 1.92% false-negative (FN) and 0.25% and 0.37% false positive (FP) rates, respectively. Particularly for distorted pectoral muscle regions, the proposed method has been shown to outperform some pioneering studies in this area.

Investigating the Influence of Joint Reinforcements of Portland Cement Concrete Slabs Under Asphalt Concrete Overlays on Vertical Deflections Using Accelerated Pavement Testing

Seferoglu, Mehmet Tevfik; Seferoglu, Aysegul Gunes; Çelik, Muhammet; Akpinar, Muhammet Vefa

Joint gaps between slabs in underlying Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements are critical factors in the life span of asphalt concrete (AC) overlays. Therefore, being informed about the vertical deflections that may occur around the joints is important. In this study the joints were reinforced with three different materials: ethylene propylene diene monomer (i.e., rubber joint filler [RJF] reinforcement), bitumen-based sealant (i.e., rubber plate [RP] reinforcement), and steel plate (SP) (i.e., SP reinforcement), to limit the vertical movement of the underlying PCC. Tests were conducted at the accelerated pavement testing facility for two different AC overlay thicknesses, 50 mm and 100 mm, during 100,000 passages to investigate the influence of AC overlay thickness variations on slab vertical deflections and to also evaluate types of joint reinforcement on slab vertical deflections. For 50-mm thick AC overlay, the most effective joint reinforcements to prevent deformations caused by loading were RP, RJF, and SP; for a 100-mm thickness, this was determined to be RJF, SP, and RP, respectively.

From Cadomian back-arc basin to Rheic Ocean closure: the geochronological records of the Kurtoglu Massif, eastern Sakarya Zone, Turkey

Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Karsli, Orhan; Yi, Keewook

New U-Pb zircon data from the Kurtoglu Massif (eastern Sakarya Zone, Turkey) reveal a Cadomian back-arc basin, evolving to closure of the Rheic Ocean. A host metapsammite from the lower tectonic slice of the massif yielded detrital zircon ages ranging from Neoarchean (2.73 Ga) to late Neoproterozoic with a major population between 610 and 553 Ma and a peak at 592 Ma, implying that the basement of the Sakarya Zone has a Cadomian affinity. This metasedimentary sequence was intruded by an orthogneiss in the early Ordovician (481 Ma) probably during the opening of the Rheic Ocean. Zircon grains from the overlying metasedimentary sample yielded concordant ages spreading throughout the Mesoproterozoic (1608-1032 Ma) and early Paleozoic (516-351 Ma), suggesting that they were deposited in the Rheic Ocean likely prior to its final closure. The muscovite metagranite, emplaced into the host rocks of the Kurtoglu Massif at 388 Ma, formed probably during northward closure of the Rheic Ocean. Zircon grains of a metasiltstone from the upper tectonic slice of the massif, represented mainly by phyllites, yielded similar age spectra to that of the host metapsammite of the lower tectonic slice. Such phyllites in the Pulur Massif similar to 35 km to the southeast display a close association with the ophiolitic complexes of the Rheic Ocean. This relationship together with the age spectra mentioned above suggests that sedimentation was on a place away from the Paleozoic igneous sources, in an analogous position to the southern passive margin of the Rheic Ocean.

A homemade hazelnut milk-based beverage was prepared from hazelnut milk with raisins. The proximate composition, physicochemical and sensorial properties, total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity, and fatty acid compositions of the beverage samples were determined. The properties of the three different preparations of homemade hazelnut milk with raisins (1%, 3%, and 5%) were compared with the control sample without raisins. The main macronutrient was fat (6.3‒7.3%) in the hazelnut milk beverage followed by carbohydrate (3‒3.5%) and protein (2.2‒2.5%). The addition of raisins to the beverage formulation increased the flavor and general acceptability scores. It also improved the TPC and antioxidant capacity. The TPC of the developed beverage samples ranged from 65 to 97 mg/L. The fatty acid composition was rich in monounsaturated fatty acids as mainly oleic acid (>80%). The hazelnut milk beverage may have potential as a functional beverage in a daily diet to provide nutrients and energy.

Eocene magmatism and associated Fe-Cu mineralization in northeastern Turkey: a case study of the Karadağ skarn

Sipahi, Ferkan; Saydam Eker, Çiğdem; Akpınar, İbrahim; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Vural, Alaaddin; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aydurmuş, Tanju

The metallogenic belt containing numerous skarn mineralized systems starting from Eastern Europe continues through Turkey and Iran. The study area in the Eastern Pontides is within this metallogenic belt. The 44.39 ± 0.53 Ma Karadağ Intrusion sourced skarn mineralization is located along the granitoid-to-limestone contact. The Karadağ Intrusion is an arc-like pluton with medium–high K calc-alkaline and peraluminous–metaluminous affinity. The Karadağ Fe–Cu skarn mineralization (Gümüşhane, Turkey), an exoskarn, is hosted by Late Cretaceous limestone and consists of early garnet, clinopyroxene, and orthoclase with late epidote and chlorite. Primary ore minerals are magnetite and haematite, accompanied by minor amounts of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Pyroxene comprises mostly diopside and less hedenbergitic diopside and johannsenite. Wollastonite is very rare. Garnet is andradite and grossular–andradite. Thus, all these results imply that the Karadağ Fe–Cu skarn mineralization formed under relatively oxidized and Fe-rich conditions. The homogenization temperatures of the fluid inclusions vary from 189°C to 405°C for quartz and 186°C to 430°C for calcite. The salinity contents in the fluid inclusions are within 0.2–9 wt% NaCl equivalent for quartz and 0.4–14.8 wt% NaCl equivalent for calcite. First melting temperatures between −36.5 and −47.4°C were attained with the presence of NaCl–FeCl2± CaCl2 in the initial phase of fluid inclusions. The first melting in the later stage of fluid inclusions is between −3.8 and −17.2°C, thereby, supporting the existence of NaHCO3-Na2CO3-KCl-type salt composition. The δ18O values of minerals are 1.7–10.3‰ for garnet, 11.1–14.6‰ for quartz, 6.4 to 6.8‰ for epidote, and 2.8–3.8‰ for magnetite in the Karadağ skarn mineralization. The δ18O value of epidote indicates magmatic fluid, whereas those of garnet, magnetite, and quartz suggest magmatic fluids together with less meteoric effect. The δ18O values in limestone (18.7 to 22.3‰), marble (8.7‰), and calcite (10.5 to 12.2‰) were depleted relative to typical δ18O contents of marine carbonates (20 to 30‰). Moreover, the C isotope values of calcite (−5.4 to −1.4‰), marble (−2.1‰), and limestone (1.0 to 1.2‰) reflect those of metamorphic rocks and skarns (−4.0 to 3‰ and −18 to 2‰). Mineral paragenesis, fluid inclusion, and stable isotopic signatures are consistent with ore mineralization caused by the interaction of magmatic fluids with carbonate host rocks. Karadağ Fe-Cu skarn mineralization, associated with Karadağ postcollisional magmatism, is an example of skarn mineralized system in the Eastern Pontides.

    Event Tourism in Turkey

    Akdu, Serap; Akdu, Uğur

Turkey is a country with many natural, cultural, and historical attractions, as well as many infrastructure and superstructures such as transportation, accommodation facilities, food and beverage businesses, and communication infrastructure. These features increase the event tourism potential of Turkey as in many types of tourism. Offering unforgettable event tourism opportunities by combining all its touristic supplies, Turkey hosts many different events from music festivals to shopping festivals. There are many national, international, and local events organized in Turkey, and most of these events are followed by large masses. In this chapter, event tourism activities and event tourism potential in Turkey, which connects the Asian and European continents, have been written.
