- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ1Seismic-induced vibration control of a multi-story building with double tuned mass dampers considering soil-structure interaction
Araz, Onur; Elias, Said; Kablan, Feyza
This paper presents a methodology for the optimization of double tuned mass dampers (TMDs) positioned on the top floor of a multi-story building subjected to ground motions considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). In the optimization process, it is considered that double TMDs are connected both in series and in parallel. STMD and PTMD are used to denote the series TMDs and parallel TMDs, respectively. The equations of motion for an n-story shear building controlled by STMD and PTMD are derived by considering the SSI effect and the optimum parameters of both devices are obtained by minimizing the amplitude of the displacement transfer function for the top floor of the building in the frequency domain analysis. The effectiveness of the PTMD and STMD designed using the Jaya algorithm (JA) is verified by numerical examples of a ten-story shear building under twelve earthquake records with different frequency content and the comparison with the traditional TMD is also performed. In order to investigate the effect of earthquake frequency content on the control performance of the TMDs, earthquakes considered are divided into three different groups as low, intermediate, and high-frequency contents. In addition, the influence of the soil stiffness on the optimum parameters and effectiveness of the PTMD and STMD is discussed. Numerical results show that the optimally designed PTMD and STMD effectively suppressed the maximum floor displacements and accelerations of the building. It is also shown that SSI effects can be ignored when the building is built on stiff soil. In addition, it is concluded that the SSI and earthquake frequency content have a significant effect on the control performance of TMDs and the seismic response of the building.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ4An Overview of Applications of the Electro-Fenton (e–/H2O2/Fe2+) Oxidation Processes: Degradation of Acid and Basic Dyes in the Industrial Wastewaters
Kıranşan, Murat
Abstract: As a result of the rapid development of industry and technology, a great increase has been observed in the use of chemicals and toxic substances harmful to the environment, especially in the last 20 yr. The harmful effects of industrial wastewater, which are formed as a result of the use of chemical and toxic substances as raw substances and by products in many technology branches, adversely affect the environment. Traditional treatment methods are quite inadequate in the treatment of industrial wastewater. Water pollution is one of the most important environmental problems of today. Since water is the most basic need of living things and the source of great economic activities, it is an indispensable resource for the continuation of living and non-living life. Acid dyes, one or more in the molecule contain a sulfonic acid group or a carboxylic acid group. Acid dyes are chemically classified as anionic dyes. Direct metal-complex and reactive dyestuffs containing sulfonic acid groups are also anionic. Basic dyes are in the form of hydrochlorides of organic bases and are found in the colored part of the cationic group dye. Basic dyes, contain N or S atoms as positive charge carriers. Different chemical, physical and biological processes such as chlorination, ozonation, adsorption and microfiltration are widely used in cleaning the environments where industrial wastes are present. However, in all of these methods organic substance can be removal by transferring it from one phase to another. However, due to increasing environmental pollution, the treatment process has changed to develop new methods that can decompose organic substances into CO2 and H2O instead of transferring them from one phase to another. Hybrid systems in which different oxidation processes are applied simultaneously in the same electrochemical cell, are widely used today in order to increase the efficiency of the electrochemical methods.

Sevim, Zeynep; Dogan, Hulya; Demir, Zeynep; Sezen, Feride Sena; Dogan, Ramazan Ozgur
In cell culture investigations, it is assumed that the number of cells is counted automatically without the need for forward planning, additional tools, or consumables. The automatic cell counting process is greatly facilitated and made functional by the segmentation of cell culture lines. Many studies with high-accuracy results have been developed for cell or tissue segmentation in images acquired from microscopic systems, but this success cannot be achieved for segmentation of cell culture line (especially in images acquired from inverted microscope). There are still restrictions in segmentation of cell culture line studies in inverted microscope systems. In this context, a new inverted microscope image data set is created and higher accuracy auto-encoder models are developed for segmentation of HaCat cell culture line. The analyzes of the developed auto-encoder models are evaluated using four different performance evaluation procedures which are Accuracy, Sensitivity, Specificity and Jaccard. In terms of the performance evaluation procedures used in this study, the achievements of the auto-encoder models are clearly satisfactory for the automated segmentation of the HaCat cell culture line.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ3Evaluation of Pozzolanic Activity of Two Different Types of C and F Fly Ashes with Fineness Factor
Sahin, Demet Demir; Cavusoglu, Ibrahim; Yilmaz, Ali Osman
Today, energy produced from coal is economical compared to other sources but it faces a very serious waste problem. However, these wastes are evaluated by using them as mineral additives in cement, which leads to lower cement costs, saving resources, producing environmentally friendly cement, reducing CO2 gas, and producing high-strength cement. In this work, the pozzolanic properties of different types of fly ash (Afşin Elbistan C type and Çayırhan F type) are investigated. The fly ashes used in the study are first subjected to the milling process (10, 20, 30, 45, and 60 minutes), and then the 28 and 90-day pozzolanic activity index tests of the milled and unmilled ashes are performed. The results obtained show that the 28-day pozzolanic activity value of the ashes subjected to 20-, 30-, 45-, and 60-minute milling times are higher than the value specified in the standard, compared to the unmilled and 10 min milled fly ash. In addition, for all fly ash samples, the 90-day pozzolanic activity index results show that while the pozzolanic activity index value of Çayırhan (ÇYH) fly ash is higher than the standard value, that of Afşin Elbistan (AE) fly ash is lower than standard. The outcomes of the present study show that the mechanical properties of the fly ash are generated by the burning of coal increase after milling process, and thus can be used as a mineral additive. With the effect of grinding, both fly ash increase the pozzolanic activity. The results are determined with the experimental results obtained.

Aktaş, Gülten; Hisarlı, Z. Mümtaz; Demirel, A. Sinan
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the main faults and many small-scale faults and submarine structures within Gemlik Bay, on the middle strand of the North Anatolian Fault in the southeast of the Sea of Marmara. In order to produce a fault map for the study area and research tectonic structures, magnetic data were obtained using a cesium vapor magnetometer on a total of 30 profiles (340 km) with N-S and E-W orientation within the bay. Diurnal corrections were applied to obtain the necessary minimization of diurnal variations in the magnetic data. Heading correction and micro-leveling corrections were applied to remove small boat effects, and the reduction to the pole method was applied for greater differentiation of the magnetic data. Magnetic data were analyzed using advanced potential field processing techniques. Euler deconvolution technique was applied to define the extension and depth of the determined lineaments. Boundaries of structures in the region were determined using source edge detection, tilt derivative, the tilt angle of the total horizontal gradient amplitude (TAHG), and a novel edge detector based on the softsign function (SF) techniques. In order to reveal the tectonic evolution of Gemlik Bay, the structures obtained from the analysis results were interpreted and a fault map was produced. The results of the study identified the Armutlu Fault in the north, the Gemlik Fault in the east, the Zeytinbağı Fault and Mudanya Fault in the southwest and the Gençali Fault in the south within Gemlik Bay. These five essential faults significantly affected the region tectonically. These faults correlated well with the location of some previously-known major tectonic structures. Moreover, these important faults following the morphology of the bay indicate that Gemlik Bay was opened by a pull-apart basin mechanism.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ3A barrier to participation in cervical cancer screenings: fatalism
Duru, Gökcem; Topatan, Serap
Cervical cancer is a significant disease affecting women’s health in terms of its incidence and is one of the most preventable cancers. However, participation in early cervical cancer-screening programs has been unsatisfactory for various reasons. In this descriptive, relationship-seeking study, we examined the relationship between fatalism tendency, an individual barrier to participation in early cancer screening programs, and women’s attitudes toward the early diagnosis of cervical cancer and undergoing the Pap smear test. Research data were collected between August 1, 2019 and December 1, 2019, in a city in northern Turkey from 602 women using a participant information form, the Attitudes Toward Early Diagnosis in Cervical Cancer Scale, and the Fatalism Tendency Scale. We found that fatalistic tendencies in women were a predictor of their attitudes toward the early diagnosis of cervical cancer (odds ratio [OR] = −0.64, β =.47, p <.001) and undergoing the Pap smear test (OR = 1.01, β = −.15, p <.001). Women with high fatalism tendencies had a more negative attitude toward the early diagnosis of cervical cancer and their participation rate in Pap smear screening programs was low. Therefore, nurses must consider women’s fatalistic tendencies and attitudes toward cancer when organizing educational and informational programs that encourage participation in cervical cancer screening.

Karabudak, Filiz; Şüküroğlu, Ebru Emine; Şüküroğlu, Süleyman; Yeşildal, Ruhi
Magnesium alloys have excellent properties such as high specific strength, rigidity, good damping, electromagnetic shielding, castability, and machinability. However, corrosion, creep, and fatigue resistance are generally the properties that need to be improved. In this study, a hybrid coating was formed on AZ31 magnesium alloy with different surface roughness at different frequencies. In the hybrid coating, an oxide coating was first grown on the surface by the micro-arc oxidation method, and then, the epoxy coating was grown on this oxide coating by the dipping method. The characterization of the coatings was performed by XRD, SEM, and EDS analysis. Furthermore, the relationship between fatigue life and surface roughness was also discussed in this study. The fatigue life and strength of the coated samples were determined as a result of the tests performed on the fatigue device. It was concluded that the fatigue life and strength of hybrid coatings were much better compared to uncoated and single-layer coated samples.

The effect of isothermal exposure at temperatures from 100°C to 250°C for 8 hours on the structure, mechanical and tribological properties of the Zn – 40% Al – 2% Cu – 2% Si alloy produced by chill casting is studied. The isothermal treatment eliminates dendritic segregation yielding a coarse-grained polyhedral structure containing an α-solid solution with fine inclusions of silicon and zinc-rich phase. Increase in the temperature of the isothermal exposure leads to decrease in the hardness and strength and increase in the ductility, in the coefficient of friction and in the wear magnitude while reducing the average roughness of the alloy surface.

- BildiriYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ4Quantum Convolutional Neural Network for Agricultural Mechanization and Plant Disease Detection
Genemo, Musa; Shakya, S.; Tavares, J.M.R.S.; Fernández-Caballero, A.; Papakostas, G.
Agricultural research is essential in addressing the challenges of food production and meeting the needs of a growing population. Severe crop disorders can lead to food insecurity, potentially causing disastrous effects on agricultural production, such as yield losses, reduced crop quality, and even complete crop failures. By leveraging computer vision techniques, it is possible to develop systems that detect signs of crop diseases at an early stage, facilitating prompt intervention and management. Environmental changes, such as rainfall and biosolids, can cause plants to become inflamed by microorganisms. While manual observation and assessment of leaf conditions have traditionally been used for crop disease detection, there is increasing interest in leveraging technology to automate and enhance the process. Manual detection of crop diseases based on leaf conditions is subjective, time consuming, and vulnerable to errors. Utilizing computer vision methods to detect plant diseases helps improve plant health. The concept of applying quantum convolutional neural networks (QCNNs) for agricultural mechanization and plant disease detection is an interesting area of research that combines quantum computing and deep learning techniques. However, it is important to note that quantum computing is still in its early stages, and practical implementations of QCNNs for real-world applications, including agriculture, are not yet widespread. The proposed work of paper focuses on the detection of leaf blight disease by classifying leaves into late blight, early blight, and healthy leaves. This work is divided into two stages: segmentation and classification. For segmentation, MobileNetV2 is used, and an emerging quantum machine learning technique named QCNN is used for classification. The main objective is to provide and propose an effective and fast automated technique to detect and classify blight disease, which will help farmers identify blight disease easily. The proposed model achieved a classification accuracy of 0.969. Furthermore, the results were further validated against recent findings in the field. The presented outcome implies that the model’s performance is remarkable.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ2Effect of Reduced Fineness of Fly Ash Used on the Alkali–Silica Reaction (ASR) of Concrete
Eker, Hasan; Demir Şahin, Demet; Çullu, Mustafa
This study aimed to determine the effect of fly ash added to concrete with high calcium content (C class) and different fineness on durability properties such as the alkali–silica reaction (ASR). By substituting ultra-fine fly ash for cement at specific proportions in concrete mixes and increasing the fly ash fineness, fly ash filled the spaces between cement grains or aggregates in concrete and accelerated the hydration process. Thus, the mechanism of ASR development was reduced. Class C Afşin Elbistan ash was used and was ground in a ball mill for 0, 10, 20, 30, and 45 min, and Blaine fineness values of 1555, 1632, 2347, 2589, and 2766 cm2/g were obtained, respectively. For each fly ash fineness, the effect of mixtures with 10%, 30%, and 50% replacement of cement on the ASR mechanism was observed during curing periods of 3, 7, 14, and 28 days compared to concrete without fly ash admixture. Furthermore, the effect of the increased fineness and substitution rate of fly ash with high calcium content in cement on the microstructure was revealed by microscopic mineralogical images. The prepared fine fly ash added to concrete mixes at different replacement ratios showed ASR reducing properties compared to the concrete mix without additions. The fly ash fineness and the substitution rate in the concrete had a reducing effect on the ASR, and this effect resulted in values lower than the reference concrete value.
