Investigation of Yield and Quality Parameters of Some Local and Newly Registered Bread (hexaploid) Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Genotypes Under Rainfed Agricultural Conditions; [Untersuchung von Ertrags- und Qualitätsparametern einiger lokaler und neu registrierter (hexaploider) Brotweizen-Genotypen (Triticum aestivum L.) unter Regenfeldbaubedingungen]

    Sirat, Abdulveli

Hexaploid bread wheat is an economically important crop grown worldwide. There is need to new breed cultivars to meet the needs of ever-growing populations. This study was carried out to determine the yield and quality traits of some newly bread wheat cultivars and locally popular wheat cultivars. The research was carried out at Siran-Gumushane (Turkey) during 2015–2016 and 2016–2017. A total of 24 bread wheat genotypes (14 commercial cultivars and 10 local genotypes) were used as plant materials in the study. The experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Duration of heading, plant height, spike length, number of seeds per spike, seed weight per spike, seed yield, thousand seed weight, hectolitre weight, protein percentage, zeleny sedimentation, and wet gluten percentage values were investigated in this study. Statistically significant different results were noted among some parameters according to the results obtained from the research. The maximum seed yields were obtained from Saraybosna, Ozcan, Tosunbey, Sakin, Sonmez-2001 and Altay-2000 cultivars. The maximum thousand seed weight was obtained from the Kate-A1 variety, while the Sakin variety stood out first in terms of zeleny sedimentation trait. It has been determined that Saraybosna, Ozcan and Sakin cultivars have high seed yield and have high quality under dry farming conditions. If these cultivars are used in regional conditions, bread wheat production quantity and quality will be increased.

Continuous flow microwave processing of peanut butter: A (hypothetical) computational process design study with experimental validation

Coskun, Eda; Ozturk, Samet; Topcam, Huseyin; Karatas, Ozan; Li, Rui; Wang, Shaojin; Mert, Behic; Erdogdu, Ferruh

The increase in foodborne pathogen cases in low moisture foods has raised a significant food safety concern for food industry. One of the most significant outbreaks related with these food products was observed in 2008–2009 due to Salmonella problem in peanut butter. This issue was recently observed again for a multinational case. Challenges of conventional thermal processing due to the lower thermal conductivity – diffusivity value and higher viscosity, microwave (MW) heating might be an efficient processing while the non-uniform heating is a challenging drawback. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a mathematical model for MW processing of peanut butter and present industrial scale designs for continuous flow processing. For this purpose, the mathematical model was first experimentally validated using a lab-scale system and validated with experimental data. Following this, continuous flow MW process design studies were carried out with different holding tube configurations to obtain a temperature increase to enable decontamination and improve the temperature uniformity. These design simulations provided a better understanding to enhance the process efficiency of high viscosity low moisture peanut butter samples and for design and optimization of continuous flow MW processing.

Optimization of tuned mass damper inerter for a high-rise building considering soil-structure interaction

    Araz, Onur

The dynamic responses of the buildings and the optimum parameters of tuned mass damper inerter (TMDI) may change significantly when soil-structure interaction (SSI) is considered. Thus, it is necessary to consider the effect of the SSI in the optimization of TMDI. The study aims at proposing a methodology for optimization of TMDI parameters in reducing maximum structural responses of a high-rise building under earthquake considering the SSI effects. The equations of motion for time-domain analysis are derived for obtaining seismic-induced vibrations of a multi-story shear building with TMDI when the SSI is considered. An improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) is used to obtain the optimum parameters. The aim of the optimization is to reduce the amplitude of the acceleration transfer function (ATF). The effectiveness of the optimally designed TMDI is assessed for twelve earthquake records with different frequency contents. The effect of the different mass ratios (µ), inertance ratios (β) and support conditions on control performance of the TMDI are investigated in detail. Numerical results proved that the SSI effect and the inertance ratio have a significant impact on the optimal design and effectiveness of the TMDI. From the seismic analysis results, it is seen that the controlled displacement response usually increases with the increase in the inertia ratio for both the fixed and flexible foundation, and a lower seismic response is obtained in the building controlled by TMD compared with the TMDI with different inertance ratios.

Radio-elemental microzonation (RELMIC): a case study of Karadeniz Technical University Campus and surroundings (Trabzon, Turkey)

    Altundaş, S.; Çınar, H.

In situ radioactivity measurements were performed to describe and map the relationship between the radioactive concentration distribution on the surface and geological formations in the Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) campus and surrounding area located on the shore of the Black Sea in NE Turkey. The concentrations of radio-elements (eU, eTh, and K) and dose rate values were measured using a portable gamma-ray spectrometer with NaI(Tl) crystal at 150 points in the study area with a duration of 5 min for each measurement point. In addition, the geochemical radio-element ratios (eTh/eU, K/eU, and eU/eTh) give information about the origin of the rocks, and radiological hazard parameters for humans and the environment were also calculated. Average values of eU, eTh, and K concentrations, and dose rate, were calculated to be 3.59 ppm, 13.46 ppm, 0.84%, and 65.38 nGy/h, respectively. While the highest concentrations of radio-element and dose rate values were recorded at outcrops of Eocene-Neogene basaltic rocks and red clays, which are the weathering product of the Kabaköy formation, the lower anomaly zones coincide with brown and reddish brown forest and agricultural soils of volcanic origin in the study area. According to the average radio-element ratios, it was concluded that the rocks in the study area do not completely originate from the crust, but formed as a result of the mixture of upper mantle and continental crust. All the calculated hazard parameters seem to be lower than the internationally recommended values, and there is no cancer risk in and around the campus area.

Optimization insulation thickness and reduction of CO2 emissions for pipes in all generation district heating networks

    Terhan, Meryem

District heating systems are provided solutions for the increasing energy problems in high-population cities. Energy costs go up depending on increasing heat loss in DHS's distribution network. Heat loss from the network consists of 5–20% of transferred energy, and this loss is higher than the other losses in the heating system. In the study, heat losses from the pipes such as supply-return pipes, hot water and circulation pipes into heat canals are investigated based on energy, exergy, economic and environmental. Optimum insulation thicknesses, energy savings, reduction of CO2 emissions, the first investment costs and payback periods of the pipes in the network of all-generation district heating systems are investigated by using Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) method for fuel types like natural gas, fuel oil and coal. Optimum insulation thicknesses are calculated for different nominal sizes of pipes and various insulation materials such as glass wool, and rock wool for the different climatic zones. According to the results of the study, the heat losses from pipes in the 4th generation DHS network are decreased between 38.19% and 33.33% from the warmest climate zone to the coldest climate zone according to the 3rd generation. Energy savings, reduction of CO2 emissions, payback periods and optimum insulation thickness values of supply and return pipes in the network are respectively changed between 7.80–98.86 $/m, 39.61–322.32 kg CO2/year, 0.028–0.38 years and 0.025–0.0105 m depending on various fuel types, insulation materials, nominal size pipes, climatic zones and all generation types.

A Statistical Analysis and Evaluation on the Earthquake Forecasting and Hazard for Lake Van and its adjacent area (Türkiye); [Van Gölü ve Civarı (Türkiye) İçin Deprem Tahmini ve Tehlikesi Üzerine İstatistiksel Bir Analiz ve Değerlendirme]

    Ozturk, Serkan; Alkan, Hamdi

In this study, current earthquake hazard is tried to present and earthquake forecasting is made for Lake Van and its adjacent area for the next five years. For this purpose, a statistical analysis is achieved with the concomitant use of the b-value, Z-value, relative intensity (RI) and pattern informatics (PI) data. In addition, for the earthquake forecasting in the intermediate term and hazard, a comprehensive discussion is made with the studies analyzing the different seismological and geophysical variables in literature. The relations between these parameters reveal more accurate and reliable approaches. Consequently, at the beginning of 2022, particularly the areas having small b-value and large Z-value with the hotspots (possible earthquake areas) between 2022 and 2027 from the combined forecast map are determined in and around Muradiye, Çaldıran, Özalp, Van city centre and Gevaş including Çaldıran, Yeniköşk, Erciş and Malazgirt faults with Saray and Van Fault zones.

Geometric optimisation of chicanes using driving simulator trajectory data

Akgol, Kadir; Gunay, Banihan; Aydin, Metin Mutlu

Vertical traffic-calming applications may possess certain disadvantages. For instance, drivers sometimes apply a harsh brake very late or they may even prefer to accelerate rather than slow down to by-pass the suspension's shock threshold level. This has negative consequences on both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. In this study, the effects of chicanes-one of the most common horizontal speed reduction applications-on driver behaviour were examined and certain design characteristics were evaluated in the traffic laboratory of Akdeniz University in Turkey. To complete the driving tests safely and in an economical fashion, they were performed in a driving simulator. The trajectory data of some 125 drivers were saved by the simulator software. To examine these data in detail, a new method was developed using VisualLisp programming. The trajectory data were then transferred to an ArcGIS analysis program and the driving test data on the virtual chicanes were evaluated according to position and speed data. Finally, the optimum chicane design characteristics and their efficiency were determined.

Determination of rock quality designation (RQD) in metamorphic rocks: a case study (Bayburt-Kırklartepe Dam)

Alemdag, Selcuk; Sari, Mahmut; Seren, Aysel

The role and importance of rock mass classification systems from past to present in engineering designs are indisputable. Therefore, the correct estimation of the parameters that make up these systems is essential in terms of reliability, time, and economy. One of the crucial parameters commonly used in rock mass classification is the rock quality designation (RQD). This study aimed to indirectly estimate the RQD value determined from the core samples obtained from the exploration drillings. In this context, P wave velocity (Vp) was obtained by seismic refraction tomography (SRT) from the geophysical measurements applied in the metamorphic rock mass, and the discontinuity frequency parameter was obtained from the line survey studies carried out on the rock mass. What determined RQD values with the help of simple regression analyzes and empirical equations with high estimation capacity using Vp and discontinuity frequency parameters were obtained without drilling in the rock mass. Accordingly, the performance indexes of the equations produced by different researchers and the equations produced in this study were evaluated in determining the RQD parameter. In the generated equations, the highest coefficient of determination value depending on joint frequency and Vp wave velocity with RQD was calculated as R2 = 0.89 and R2 = 0.82, respectively. When the produced equations are evaluated according to the performance indexes, it is seen that the empirical equations obtained by previous studies have the highest root mean square error (RMSE) and values account for (VAF) values compared to the other equations and have very high estimation capacities. Thanks to the equations with high estimation capacity, the RQD value was determined depending on the joint density and Vp speeds.

Numerical studies on axially loaded doubler plate reinforced elliptical hollow section T-joints

    Saria, Busra; Ozyurt, Emre

This paper presents results of numerical studies completed on unreinforced and doubler plate reinforced Elliptical Hollow Section (EHS) T-joints subjected to axial compressive loading on the brace member. Non-linear finite element (FE) models were developed using the finite element code, ABAQUS. Available test data in literature was used to validate the FE models. Subsequently, a parametric study was carried out to investigate the effects of various geometrical parameters of main members and reinforcement plates on the ultimate capacity of reinforced EHS T-joints. The parametric study found that the reinforcing plate significantly increases the ultimate capacity of EHS T-joints up to twice the capacity of the corresponding unreinforced joint. The thickness and length of the reinforcing plate have a positive effect on the ultimate capacity of Type 1 joints. This study, however, found that the capacity of Type 1 orientation is not dependent on the brace-to-chord diameter ratio. As for type 2 orientations, the thickness and length of the reinforcement have a minimal effect on the ultimate capacity. A new design method is introduced to predict the capacity of the reinforced EHS T-joints Type 1 and 2 based on the multiple linear regression analyses.

Alleviating the Impact of the Barriers to Circular Economy Adoption Through Blockchain: An Investigation Using an Integrated MCDM-based QFD With Hesitant Fuzzy Linguistic Term Sets

Erol, Ismail; Murat Ar, Ilker; Peker, Iskender; Searcy, Cory

Despite its clear potential to contribute to sustainability, there are many challenges to adopting circular economy (CE). These barriers impede the implementation of CE; however, research to address them is ongoing. For example, novel technologies have become a key enabler for easing the impact of CE adoption barriers. Blockchain is one disruptive technology that has the potential to address some of those barriers, notably technological, organizational, and ecological. Blockchain is particularly well suited to help address supply chain-oriented barriers to CE adoption. However, a review of the literature shows that while there are a limited number of conceptual studies that address the capabilities of blockchain to alleviate the impact of the barriers to CE, no previous study has focused on this vital subject using a decision tool based on expert data. To this end, this paper proposes an integrated decision framework involving Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM)-based Quality Function Deployment (QFD) method with Hesitant Fuzzy Linguistic Term Sets (HFLTS) to investigate the true potential of blockchain to address the CE adoption barriers. Our findings indicate that enhanced supply chain traceability management, improved collaboration and coordination in supply chain ecosystems, building higher levels of trust in supply chain ecosystems, and enhanced business models are the most significant functions of blockchain to help overcome the CE adoption barriers.

Producing maximally entangled Bell type states in an efficient way for quantum teleportation

    Çelik, Necati; Ünal, Nüket

In quantum teleportation, the sender must interact her/his qubit to one of the qubits in a maximally entangled Bell/Bell-type state and as a result, a joint state is obtained. This joint state has to be rearranged in terms of the appropriate number of Bell/Bell-type states. Then the sender measures her/his qubits and sends the results via a classical channel to the receiver. According to the outcome of the measurement results, the receiver applies appropriate gates to the qubits in her/his share to recover the teleported state. Perhaps the most important step in this protocol is to be able to rewrite the joint state in terms of the appropriate number of Bell-type states. An efficient way to produce Bell-type states for quantum teleportation of an arbitrary n-qubit state is proposed. Quantum teleportation of an arbitrary three-qubit state is studied as an example.

Late Jurassic Paleotethyan oceanic slab break-off revealed by Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes of Na-rich adakitic granites from northwestern Turkey

Karsli, Orhan; Şengün, Fırat; Santos, José Francisco; Uysal, İbrahim; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Aydin, Faruk; Kandemir, Raif

The Mesozoic geodynamic evolution of the Paleotethys Ocean is critical but a poorly known piece of the geological history of the Sakarya Zone, north Turkey. Here, we describe new integrated research of zircon U-Pb geochronology, bulk-rock major-trace element and Sr–Nd isotopes as well as Hf isotope of zircons from the granitic rocks of the Demirköy and Kızıldamlar plutons located in Bilecik area along the western Sakarya Zone, northwestern Turkey. Zircon U–Pb ages obtained by LA-ICP-MS reveal that the granitic magma intruded into the basement rocks during the Late Jurassic (ca. 162–157 Ma). The granites are tholeiitic and show slightly metaluminous to peraluminous geochemical affinities. The granite samples are adakitic, having relatively high Na2O (6.35–7.58 wt%) and Sr (172–580 ppm), and low K2O (0.39–1.13 wt%) and Y (3.2–5.3 ppm), and thus have high Sr/Y (70–250). The samples exhibit enrichment of light rare earth elements (REE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and depletion in heavy REE and the high field strength elements (HFSE; e.g., Nb, Ti, Ta). The samples possess low 87Sr/86Sr(t) values of 0.70313 to 0.70372, and εNd(t) of −0.66 to +9.24. Zircon grains exhibit positive εHf (t) values of 5.0 to 12.8 and depleted mantle model ages of Hf (TDM1 = 0.24 to 0.68 Ga). These geochemical features and Sr–Nd–Hf radiogenic isotope systematics reveal that the adakitic rocks were likely formed by low degree melting (<10%) of the eclogitic part of an oceanic slab and subsequent melt fractionation and crustal contamination. An ongoing subduction scenario cannot explain the formation of the investigated adakitic rocks. We suggest that the adakitic plutons were generated through slab break-off after the final closure of the Paleotethys Ocean throughout the Late Jurassic (ca. 162–157 Ma). Considering the previous data, the continental back-arc basin system, leading to the opening of Neotethys Ocean at the southern margin of the continent, has been put forward to decipher the Late Jurassic tectonic evolution of the Paleotethys Ocean and the western Sakarya Zone.

The Determinants of Immigrants’ Skill Composition

Karapınar Kocağ, Esra; Li, Yutong; Popescu, Cristina Raluca Gh.

Movements of labor across the world is an ongoing debate in the literature in terms of its drivers and results in sending and receiving areas. Skill composition of immigrant labor has been discussed by several papers, although they generally focused on visa policies or firm level productivity. However, this paper focuses on the relationship between immigrants’ educational attainment and government budgeting on research and development (R&D). Panel data analysis is applied for European countries, along with instrumental variable approach as a robustness check. Findings reveal that higher budget allocation for R&D is associated with higher skill level of immigrants within overall immigrant population. This finding is driven by young immigrants whose ages are between 25 and 34 and female immigrants in these countries, suggesting that this relationship varies among sub-groups of immigrants, which would have significant policy implications. Hence, the novel and original approach of the paper resides in the deciding factors of immigrants’ skill composition.

Demirbaǧ, Orkun; Demirbaǧ, Kübra Simşek; Batl, Gülgönül Bozoǧlu

Purpose: Because of the growing interest in the literature in education and political skill as facilitators of firm performance, this article aims to reveal whether there is a moderating role of women entrepreneurs' political skill on the relationship between their education level and firm performance when firm- and entrepreneur-level characteristics remain under control. Methodology: The study was conducted in Istanbul, Kocaeli, and Bursa, cities with the lowest gender gap in Turkey. The participants of the questionnaires were 291 entrepreneurs who are members of the Women Entrepreneurs Association of Turkey (KAGIDER), the Women Entrepreneur Members of Endeavor Turkey, and the TOBB Women Entrepreneurs. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to analyze the dataset. Findings: When firm- and the entrepreneur-level characteristics remain under control, women entrepreneurs' political skill shows a moderator role in the relationship between women entrepreneurs' education level and firm performance. Practical Implications: A bachelor's degree or higher, along with political skill, allow women entrepreneurs to increase their firm performance. Furthermore, the higher the political skill, the higher the effect of education level on firm performance. Originality/Value: This is the first study to investigate the moderating role of political skill of women entrepreneurs in the relationship between education level and firm performance. Moreover, political influence and human capital theories are jointly applied to the theoretical model.

The relationships between institutionalization and dual commitment: A study on hotel kitchen employees

Evren, Emine Şimşek; Celil Çakıcı, A.

Long-termed continuance of employees in hotel enterprises, especially in kitchen department where standard production is of utmost importance, is critical for organizational success. At this point, how institutionalization, a phenomenon that is usually associated with standardization, effects the organizational commitment (OC) is an important question. Another important question is how commitment to an impressive supervisor such as the chef mediates the relationship between institutionalization and OC in institutionalized hotels where standards become important instead of personal approaches. In this context, the relationship between institutionalization, OC, and commitment to the supervisor (CS), which has not been studied before, has been examined within the framework of hotel businesses. The data were collected with an online survey. The sample consisted of the kitchen staff of a national hotel chain in Turkey. The findings demonstrated that the effects of institutionalization on OC and CS were significant. CS partially mediates the relationship between institutionalization and OC. When considered within the scope of the dimensions, the CS has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between cultural power and all three dimensions of OC (affective, continuance, normative). The effect of formalization and professionalization on affective and normative commitment is partially mediated by CS.
