Effect of earthquake frequency content on seismic-induced vibration control of structures equipped with tuned mass damper

Araz, Onur; Cakir, Tufan; Ozturk, Kasif Furkan

The main goal of this paper is to investigate the influence of the earthquake frequency content on the optimization of tuned mass damper (TMD) for multi-story buildings. Earthquake frequency content is divided into three groups (i.e., low, intermediate and high frequency content) according to the ratio of peak ground acceleration to the peak ground velocities. Time-domain analyses are performed to obtain the dynamic responses of 10-story and 40-story shear buildings equipped with a TMD under twelve different earthquake records. Advanced firefly algorithm is used to obtain the optimum parameters of the TMD such as the frequency ratio and the damping ratio. The optimization criterion is selected as the minimization of the maximum top story displacement of the building with TMD. The optimum parameters of TMD designed by this paper and its control performance are compared with those of other previous works available in the literature. Compared to the other methods, the optimum TMD designed by this study especially performs better in reducing the maximum top story displacements. Furthermore, it is discussed why TMD is ineffective in reducing the maximum floor accelerations of 40-story building, and then the effect of different mass ratios and objective functions in reducing the maximum responses of both buildings under critical earthquake excitation is investigated in detail. The results also show that the frequency content of earthquake ground motions has a significant effect on the optimum parameters of TMD and its control performance.

Secular variation of magnetic declination for the past 500 years from Empire to Republic in Anatolia

    Maden, Nafiz; Yıldız, Burak

Seydi Ali Reis first mentioned the declination angle in his book titled Kitab-ı Muhit in 1554. Kitab-ı Cihannüma (1654), Füyuzat-i Mıknatisiye (1731), and Mârifetname (1757) gave the magnetic declination angle values in Anatolia. We have compiled magnetic declination data from 1500 to the present day in Anatolia and Istanbul. The plot of the magnetic declination angle was drawn for the first time using historical data between 1500 and 1947 for Istanbul. Three new magnetic declination maps for the periods of 1909–1910, 1970 and 2009 were produced for Turkey. The annual change map based on the data of 1970 and 2009 is also given for whole Turkey. The agonic line extending in NW-SE direction between Sinop and Antep divides Anatolia into two regions in 1910. The mean declination values obtained from qibla direction measurements made by the Presidency of Religious Affairs in all mosques give 3.11° E for 1970 and 4.74° E for 2009 in Turkey.

A comparative study to determine seismic response of the box culvert wing wall under influence of soil-structure interaction considering different ground motions

Ozturk, Kasif Furkan; Cakir, Tufan; Araz, Onur

The present study deals with evaluation of the effects of different ground motions, backfill-structure interaction (BSI) and soil-structure interaction (SSI) on dynamic response of a box culvert wing wall. In obtaining numerical results, five different earthquake records with different frequency contents, five different backfill types and four different subsoil types are taken into account. Firstly, a finite element model (FEM) and three analytical models are proposed for analysis of the wing wall-backfill system under fixed-base case, and these fixed-base models are compared with each other through both modal analysis and displacement time-history analysis under the assumption of linear-elasticity. After validating the ability of the FEM approach, by extending the fixed-base FEM to take account of elastoplastic behavior of soil and SSI, a three dimensional (3-D) model has been described, and 3-D nonlinear analyses have been carried out in time domain. The numerical results show that the seismic response of the wing walls are affected remarkably by the SSI, BSI and frequency content of the earthquake.

Antioxidant capacity and rheological, textural properties of ice cream produced from camel's milk with blueberry

Sayar, Esra; Şengül, Mustafa; Ürkek, Bayram

Blueberry was added to ice cream samples produced from camel's milk at different concentrations. The physicochemical, rheological, and sensory properties, total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant capacity of samples were investigated. The acidity and hardness values of the samples increased, but total solids, fat, protein, pH, ash, overrun values, and complete meltdown time significantly decreased with increasing concentration of blueberry. The L* and b* values decreased, while a* and H° values increased due to the presence of natural colorants in blueberry. The viscosity and consistency coefficient values of ice cream samples decreased depending on the blueberry concentration, whereas TPC and antioxidant capacity increased. The addition of blueberry did not have any affirmative or negative effect on the sensory properties of samples except for appearance, color, and flavor scores. Consequently, blueberry could be added to the ice cream produced using camel's milk at less than a ratio of 10% to improve its nutritional properties. Novelty impact statement: Ice cream made from camel's milk with blueberry is a novel dairy product. It is a functional product due to its high antioxidant activity and total phenolic component. The addition of blueberry does not have a negative effect on the sensory properties of the ice cream. As a result, blueberry and camel's milk could be used in new ice cream formulations to produce a nutritional and functional product.

Investigation of the effects of different extraction methods on some biological activities of Dactylorhiza romana subsp. georgica (Klinge) Soó ex Renz & Taubenheim

Bozkir, Buğra; Acet, Tuba; Özcan, Kadriye

Dactylorhiza romana subsp. georgica is found in Anatolia and is traditionally used by local people both as food and to alleviate various ailments. Although various biological activities of the plant have been partially investigated, these properties have not been comprehensively revealed in the light of scientific data. In this study, it was aimed to elucidate the antioxidant, antimicrobial, enzyme inhibition (alpha amylase, alpha glucosidase, and tyrosinase) and DNA protective activity and phenolic content of the extracts obtained from orchid tubers using different extraction methods. For this, the fresh and dry tubers of the plant were extracted with ethanol at different times in an ultrasonic water bath, shaker and their combinations with each other. ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP methods were used to determine the antioxidant properties of plant tubers. In addition, the phosphomolybdate method was used to determine the total antioxidant capacity. The spectrophotometric method was preferred to reveal the enzyme inhibition activity. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was investigated by microdilution method. In addition, the phenolic content of the plant was analysed by HPLC. The DNA protective activity of the extracts was determined by using the pUC 19 plasmid. According to the results obtained, it was revealed that each extract exhibited various biological activities. According to the HPLC results, the highest phenolic component in the extracts was determined as p-hydroxybenzoic acid. As a result, it was observed that the biological activities of orchid tubers changed according to different extraction methods. Accordingly, due to the high biological activities of orchid tubers, they have a high potential for use in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Individual Attitudes towards Immigration in Turkey: Evidence from the European Social Survey

    Karapınar Kocağ, Esra; Longhi, Simonetta

One of the reasons why people hold anti-immigration attitudes is the fear that immigrants “rob jobs” of natives and decrease wages. However, academic literature finds that this is not the case. Nevertheless, in various countries, people still tend to oppose immigration. Opposition to immigration was particularly high in Turkey in the early 2000s, where almost half of the respondents to the Turkish part of the European Social Survey reported they would prefer to allow no immigrants into Turkey. This is although immigration to Turkey is very low. Turkey is becoming an important destination country as conflicts in neighboring countries force many people to flee. Therefore, understanding the opposition to immigration in Turkey is crucial for managing age immigration flows efficiently. For this purpose, we investigate the determinants of attitudes towards immigration in Turkey using the European Social Survey and Turkish population census data. The findings of the ordered probit model reveal that Turkish people tend to hold more negative attitudes towards immigration where the regional share of immigrants is higher. The little chance of contact with immigrants in Turkey through a lower share of immigrants compared to other European countries seems to influence natives’ pro-immigrant attitudes negatively.

3D Modelling and Feasibility Assessment of Granite Deposit using 2D Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Borehole, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Survey

Junaid, Muhammad; Abdullah, Rini Asnida; Sa’ari, Radzuan; Ali, Wahid; Islam, Amber; Sari, Mahmut

This research work aims to critically analyze the efficacy of inexpensive and rapid 2D electrical resistivity tomography (2D ERT) survey for sub-surface geological delineation of granite deposits. The research work involves six ERT profiles using the Schlumberger protocol with an inner and outer electrode spacing of 5 m and 10 m, respectively. In addition, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) survey is also performed to obtain the terrain information of the studied area. At the same time, a few boreholes are drilled to validate the 2D ERT interpretations. The 2D ERT survey reveals that strong resistivity contrast enables inverted resistivity imaging to characterize the deposit such as topsoil (100-800 Ωm), fracture granite (800-2300 Ωm), and solid granite (> 2300 Ωm). The results obtained from UAV, 2DERT, and borehole survey are further processed to estimate the bedrock to topsoil ratio to assess the feasibility of the deposit. The bedrock to topsoil ratio, estimated by 2D ERT and borehole, is 3.2 and 2.2, respectively. At the same time, the combined UAV, 2D ERT, and borehole survey calculates the bedrock volume 3.2 times to topsoil. Thus the research work allows us to conclude that 2D ERT is an inexpensive, viable, and efficient technique for sub-surface geological documentation, and helps select appropriate mining methods.

Predicted current and future distribution of the fire salamander, Salamandra infraimmaculata in Turkey

    Kurnaz, Muammer

Although the fire salamander, Salamandra infraimmaculata, is relatively distributed in a broad area in the Middle East, it lives in a narrow area in southeast and south Anatolia in Turkey. The habitats of the species have been downgraded day by day, and its IUCN category is listed as "NT, and the population trend is decreasing. Within the scope of this study, a model was created with the existing locality records of the species using ecological niche modeling. As a result of this model, the current and future distribution of the species were compared. The results obtained from the analyzes made within the scope of this study showed that the current probable distribution of the species coincides with the existing locality records. However, for possible climate change scenarios, the possible future distribution of the species will be thought to be negatively affected by the increase in the greenhouse gas effect, the change in the amount of carbon dioxide, and the increase of many harmful gas concentrations in the atmosphere. If all four climate scenarios proposed in this study in the future occur sequentially, the species will have to limit or change its range, and even become will be extinct in some areas. Species conservation action plans should be initiated, and local governments should take necessary measures to prevent this from happening.

Revisiting Slotted ALOHA: Density Adaptation in FANETs

    Eroğlu, Alperen; Onur, Ertan

Unmanned aerial vehicles have been widely used in many areas of life. They communicate with each other or infrastructure to provide ubiquitous coverage or assist cellular and sensor networks. They construct flying ad hoc networks. One of the most significant problems in such networks is communication among them over a shared medium. Using random channel access techniques is a useful solution. Another important problem is that the variations in the density of these networks impact the quality of service and introduce many challenges. This paper presents a novel density-aware technique for flying ad hoc networks. We propose Density-aware Slotted ALOHA Protocol that utilizes slotted ALOHA with a dynamic random access probability determined using network density in a distributed fashion. Compared to the literature, this paper concentrates on proposing a three-dimensional, easily traceable model and stabilize the channel utilization performance of slotted ALOHA with an optimized channel access probability to its maximum theoretical level, 1/e, where e is the Euler’s number. Monte-Carlo simulation results validate the proposed approach leveraging aggregate interference density estimator under the simple path-loss model. We compare our protocol with two existing protocols, which are Slotted ALOHA and Stabilized Slotted ALOHA. Comparison results show that the proposed protocol has 36.78% channel utilization performance; on the other hand, the other protocols have 24.74% and 30.32% channel utilization performances, respectively. Considering the stable results and accuracy, this model is practicable in highly dynamic networks even if the network is sparse or dense under higher mobility and reasonable non-uniform deployments.

The Effects of Income, Occupation and Education on Household Cigarette Consumption in Turkey; [Türkiye’de Gelir, Meslek ve Eğitimin Hanehalkı Sigara Tüketimi Üzerindeki Etkisi]

    Yilmaz-Uğur, Candan; Saruç, Naci Tolga

This study aims to determine the variables affecting the cigarette consumption of households by employing logistic regression analysis based on the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) 2017 Household Budget Survey (HBA). In this model, the variables that affect cigarette consumption, namely, gender, age, education level, marital status, occupation, and the total disposable income earned by the household head in a year, are used. The results of this study indicate that variables of income, occupation and education of the household head affect cigarette consumption in Turkey. In this context, it is expected that focusing on young people, low educated and income groups in the fight against smoking will increase the success of the policies implemented.

Investigation of Factors That May Affect the Commitment of Healthcare Professionals to Their Works During the COVID-19 Pandemic Period

    Akyüz, Ahmet Mutlu; Durmuş, İbrahim

The environment of uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic period has caused difficulties especially for healthcare professionals in their work activities. The purpose of this research is to find out which variables might affect the commitment of healthcare professionals to their works during this COVID-19 period. Based on the data announced by the Ministry of Health during the pandemic in the first quarter of 2021, it was decided to conduct a research on doctors, nurses, caregivers, and medical secretaries working in hospitals in the cities of the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey which generally show high risk. In the developed research model, satisfactory conditions (SC), emotional commitment to change (ECC), and psychological ownership (PO) as variables that may directly or indirectly affect the commitment of healthcare professionals to their works (CW) were used. The Smart PLS program was used in the analysis of the research model and hypothesis. It was seen that the ECC of healthcare professionals has a positive and significant (.694; p <.000) effect on SC. It was understood that the PO of healthcare professionals has positive and significant effects on their CW (.394; p <.000). It was also observed that the presence of SC has positive and significant effects on the PO of the healthcare professionals in the current situation (.796; p <.000). It was observed that only the effect of ECC of healthcare professionals on their CW is insignificant (.097; p >.086). Looking at the indirect (intermediary) effects obtained as a result of the research, it was seen that all of the hypotheses consist of positive coefficients. This situation reveals that the mediating variables have complementary effects on the obtained results.

Would You like to Work More Hours?—An Investigation on South Africa

Popescu, Cristina Raluca Gh.; Karapınar Kocağ, Esra

To begin with, Sustainable Development Goals are of tremendous importance in all areas, being seen as vital aims in all domains, which makes them indispensable when it comes to addressing the particularities of the labour market these days. Subsequently, human resources occupy a distinctive and unique position when referring to the implications derived from targeting Sustainable Development Goals, especially in the context represented by the period specific to the COVID-19 pandemic and the international events that followed immediately after that. This study investigates the work motivation of individuals, and whether they would be willing to work more hours if they are paid. Motivation and attitudes towards working more hours might be affected by several factors, and they are important contributors to business performance. Not only business performance is to be affected, but this is also a part of Sustainable Development Goals where labour market conditions and productivity concerns are addressed, along with several other factors. Using the Quarterly Labour Force Survey from 2017 to 2022 that is conducted by Statistics South Africa, this study attempts to shed light on individual preferences for working more hours in the case of South Africa. Considering the dichotomous dependent variable, a binary response model is utilised to explore the determinants of such behaviour. Findings of the probit model reveal that socio-demographic factors such as gender, marital status, education level, and work experience are important indicators to explain this preference. More precisely, being female increases the likelihood of willingness to work more hours if paid by 1.1 percentage points, and being never married increases that probability by 2.7 percentage points. Within education categories, the highest coefficient in magnitude, having tertiary education decreases the probability of willingness to work more hours by 8.2 percentage points. As an important labour market indicator, one more year to commence working increases the probability of willingness to work more hours by 0.4 percentage points.

Optimization of three-element tuned mass damper based on minimization of the acceleration transfer function for seismically excited structures

    Araz, Onur

The three-element tuned mass damper (T-TMD) is an effective passive control device for single-degree of freedom structures due to harmonic external force. Unlike previous studies, this study aims at proposing a methodology for optimization of T-TMD positioned at the top floor of multi-degree of freedom structures under seismic loads. The equations of motion for a multi-story building controlled by a T-TMD are derived, and the T-TMD is then optimized using an advanced firefly algorithm (AFA) in the frequency domain. The aim of the optimization is to minimize the amplitude of the acceleration transfer function of the top floor of the building. The proposed methodology is implemented in two different shear buildings, and the optimum parameters are then verified by using benchmark earthquakes with different frequency components. The comparisons with the available works illustrate the availability of the AFA. The effect of the mass ratio on the optimum parameters of the T-TMD is also discussed in detail. Numerical results show that the use of the optimum T-TMD is an effective strategy to minimize the maximum structural responses of the multi-story buildings under seismic excitations. In particular, the optimum T-TMD is very effective when the maximum story responses (i.e., displacement and acceleration) occur at the top floor of the building.

Effect of front, lateral and back dead layer thicknesses of a HPGe detector on full energy peak efficiency

Kaya, Selim; Çeli̇k, Necati; Bayram, Tuncay

As well known, High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors have a wide range of applications in every area where radiation detection and measurements are involved. One of the most important parameters in this respect is the determination of the full energy peak (FEP) efficiency. There are certain parameters affecting the so-called FEP efficiency. Perhaps the most important one is the thickness of dead layers of the crystal itself. In the current study, we investigated the effects of the thickness of front, lateral and back dead layer thicknesses of the detector crystal on the FEP efficiencies for the energy range 30 keV–5 MeV using EGS4 Monte Carlo simulation package. It was shown that the change in the thickness of the front dead layer has significant effect on the efficiency values for the energy interval 30–400 keV. The change in the thickness of the lateral and back dead layer was shown to have significant effects on the efficiencies for the energy intervals 2–3 MeV and 3–5 MeV, respectively. The results were checked using GEANT4 and a good agreement was observed.

Innovative polygon trend analyses with star graph for rainfall and temperature data in agricultural regions of Turkey

Acar, Emine; Kankal, Murat; Akçay, Fatma; Şan, Murat

Agriculture is affected by climate change, such as extreme increases or decreases rainfall and temperature patterns. It is possible to research that effect by using trend analysis methodologies. This paper investigates trends of monthly total rainfall and mean temperature data of nine selected stations from agricultural regions of Turkey between 1969 and 2020. To the end, the classical Mann–Kendall, Innovative Trend Significance Test (ITST), and Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis (IPTA) with Star Graph methods providing the opportunity to examine seasonal behavior were used for trend analysis. The analysis reveals that about 96% of all monthly rainfall in the Mann-Kendall test has no trend. However, nearly all stations tend to decrease (increase) in November (September) in both innovative approaches. For temperature, it is seen that increasing trend or no trend dominated in general. There were increasing trends in the innovative approaches throughout the year except for April. Temperatures have increased significantly throughout the year in all regions over the last decades. With the help of IPTA, it was also concluded that the seasonal internal variability of rainfall over the entire time and in the last 30 years is quite complex and persists in all agricultural regions. The results show that irregular changes in rainfall and rising temperatures in all stations negatively affected crop yield and/or required more irrigation. In addition, according to the results obtained by comparing trend methods, innovative approaches are very insistent on determining of trend and provide additional information through a visual review of trend behaviors.

    Topal, Meryem; Gulcin, İlhami

In this study, antidiabetic, anticholinergic, and antioxidant abilities of rosmarinic acid were evaluated and compared to standards. To determine its antioxidant activity different in vitro bioanalytical methods, including total antioxidant activity (TAA), ABTS•+ scavenging activity, O2•- scavenging activity, DPPH· scavenging activity, DMPD•+ scavenging activity, potassium ferric cyanide reduction ability, cupric ion (Cu2+) reduction capacity, H2O2 scavenging activity, and ferrous ions (Fe2+) binding activities were separately performed. Also, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), Trolox, α-tocopherol, and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) were used as the reference antioxidants. Rosmarinic acid inhibited the linoleic acid emulsion peroxidation by 89.2% while BHA, BHT, Trolox and α-tocopherol inhibited as 87.3, 97.6, 90.3 and 75.3%, respectively, at the same concentration (30 μg/mL). When these results are evaluated, rosmarinic acid had effective TAA than BHA and α-tocopherol and close to BHT and Trolox. In addition, rosmarinic acid exhibited Kİ values of 9.67 ± 0.81 nM towards acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and 33.56 ± 2.96 nM against α-glycosidase enzymes.

Financial Literacy in Micro-Scale Enterprises Operating in Forest Products Sector: Sample of Gumushane, Turkey; [Financijska pismenost u mikropoduzećima sektora prerade drva: provincija Gumushane, Turska]

    Top, Yener; Özbek, Adem

Enterprises are one of the main components of the economic system and they are indispensable for maintaining the sustainability of economic activities. The majority of these enterprises are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Sustainability of SMEs depends on their good financial management. Inadequate financial literacy causes SMEs’ owners to make inaccurate financial decisions. The forest products sector is mostly composed of micro-scale enterprises in which financial problems are common. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the financial literacy status of the owners of micro-scale and wood-processing enterprises. For this purpose, 78 enterprises were selected as study population. Data were collected by applying a structured questionnaire to 43 of these companies by the face-to-face interview method. The structured questionnaire consisted of multiple-choice and open-ended questions and statements prepared on the Five Likert scales. Data were analysed by using the Independent-Sample T-Test, Mann-Whitney U-Test and correlation test. The reliability coefficient of the data was found to be 0.791. Of the enterprises, 58 % produced in the furniture sub-sector and 42 % in the wood products sub-sector. This study provides evidence that there was no statistically significant difference between the knowledge means of economics and financial behaviour of the furniture and wood products sectors. However, the enter-prise owners’ knowledge of financial analysis positively affected their financial literacy and financial behaviour.

Insights into brewed tea waste as a green and low-priced adsorbent for solid-phase extraction of Cd(II) ions: isotherm, kinetic, and artificial neural network approach

Ozdes, Duygu; Tilki, Nida; Seker, Serdal; Duran, Celal

In the present research, brewed tea waste (BTW) was utilized as a green, low-priced, and abundant adsorbent for separation/preconcentration of Cd(II) ions through solid-phase extraction method from water and foods for the first time. BTW was applied as a natural adsorbent, without using any chelating agent to bind Cd(II) ions or any chemical reagent for its modification. A three-layer artificial neural network model using backpropagation algorithm was utilized to explicate a prediction model for the extraction performance of Cd(II) ions by selecting the input parameters as solution pH, quantity of BTW, sample volume, eluent concentration and volume, and equilibrium time for desorption. The preconcentration factor, relative standard deviation, and detection limit were attained as 100, 3.03%, and 0.56 µg L−1, respectively. It was decided that the Langmuir isotherm model is acceptable to characterize the retention of Cd(II) ions on BTW. This result pointed out that the active binding sites on the BTW surface are homogeneously distributed. Adsorption capacity of BTW was achieved as 41.5 mg g−1 which is higher than several expensive and difficult-to-prepare adsorbents. Adsorption kinetics was elucidated by pseudo-second order kinetic model. After confirmed the accuracy of the method with spike/recovery studies, it was employed for Cd(II) determination in water (stream and sea water) and food (eggplant, lettuce, parsley, apple, and apricot) samples with high accuracy. The inferences of the study proved that the BTW offers a magnificent application prospect in the extraction of Cd(II) ions.
