- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ1Waste Heat and Mass Recovery from Boiler Exhaust Gases in a New Generation District Heating System: Energy and Exergy Analysis
Terhan, Meryem
The study performs energy and exergy analyses for each component such as boilers, buildings, distribution networks and heat exchangers of a new generation district heating system. Energy and exergy efficiencies are compared for all system components, and energy and exergy losses are presented using Sankey and Grassman diagrams. Three flue gas condensers with finned bundles are designed for different capacities of boilers that intend to recover water and heat from the waste flue gas in the district heating system due to high flue gas energy losses. Colburn-Hougen and one-dimensional finite difference methods are used to design the flue gas condensers with the MATLAB program. The exergy analysis showed that the exergy input to the system is lost by 4.52% from the distribution networks, 4.15% from all buildings and 2.18% from the flue gas. In the system, the energy and exergy efficiencies of the boilers are calculated to be 87.23% and 17.32%, respectively, and the heat loss from the flue gas is found to be 12%. The design results show that the values of mass convection coefficient (km) for all flue gas condensers decrease from 0.0706 at the inlet condensation zone to 0.0354 towards the outlet. The total condensation rate and condensation efficiency are found to be 86 kg/h and 60%, respectively, for the 2500 kW boiler.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Effect of PGV/PGA ratio on seismic-induced vibrations of structures equipped with parallel tuned mass dampers considering SSI
Araz, Onur
Tuned mass damper is one of the effective methods used to reduce dynamic loads in structures under the influence of environmental loads such as earthquakes, wind, and traffic loads. In the current TMD design, the fixed base approach is mostly considered when determining the dynamic properties of the structure. However, in cases where the structure-soil interaction (SSI) is important, the frequency values of the structure are significantly different from those obtained for the fixed foundation approach. This situation negatively affects the performance of TMD operating in a narrow frequency range. Therefore, using a control system consisting of multiple TMDs connected in parallel (MTMD) instead of a single TMD may be a promising solution for the control of structural vibrations. In this study, a parameter design and efficiency assessment of MTMD for reducing the seismic responses of the structure considering SSI is studied. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is adopted to obtain the optimum parameters (i.e., damping ratio, frequency ratio, and frequency bandwidth) of the MTMD. The effects of different support conditions, number of TMD units, and peak ground velocity (PGV) / peak ground acceleration (PGA) ratio on the performance of MTMD are also evaluated comprehensively. The dynamic responses of the structure are obtained under 42 near -fault ground motions from the time history analysis. The results reveal that ground motions with low PGV/PGA ratio can significantly increase the responses of the structure for both with and without SSI cases. Moreover, it has been observed that optimized TMDs placed parallel to the top floor of the structure are effective in reducing the seismic responses of a ten-story building considering SSI.

Eker, Çiğdem Saydam
To define the amount, thermal maturity and type of organic matter (OM), a comprehensive analysis of major and trace elements, organic carbon isotope and organic geochemistry was conducted on Lutetian black shales found in the Everek (Bayburt) region of northeastern Turkey. Total organic carbon (TOC) levels in the shale samples range from 0.62% to 6.75%, and type II–III to type III kerogen is generated, displaying a combination of high terrigenous and low marine OM. The δ13C values (ranging from –28.22 to –28.23), aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (methyl phenanthrene, dibenzothiophene, tri-aromatic and monoaromatic steroids), saturated hydrocarbon compounds (sterane and terpane), acyclic isoprenoids, n-alkane distribution (n-C13–n-C36) and inorganic geochemical characterization support that the black shales were deposited in a terrestrial-marine transition environment and had a high proportion of terrestrial OM with small amounts of marine OM preserved in relatively arid to hot climate and oxic to suboxic conditions. The analysis of biomarker thermal maturity markers, Tmax (ranging from 449–458oC) and estimated vitrinite reflectance (varying from 0.92 to 1.08%) values suggest that the black shales have reached the oil window. As a result, black shales are thought to contain low to high amounts of TOC, have a mixed kerogen type, reach a high thermal maturity level and produce little hydrocarbons.

Sarıbıyık, Oğuz Y.; Resasco, Daniel E.
This study focuses on the influence of pretreatment conditions and surface structures of well-tuned Pt nanoparticles on the selective hydrogenation of α-β unsaturated crotonaldehyde. The surface binding site preferences of the reactant during catalytic conversions are strongly influenced by the configuration of the nanoparticles’ surface fraction exposed. Since the orientation of the well-ordered surfaces are significantly affected by the pretreatment conditions, we have attempted to obtain relationships between morphology changes and catalytic activity by controlling the fraction of facets with ordered structures. Pt nanoparticles exhibit different types of exposed surfaces, namely Cubic (Cub) (100) and Cuboctahedra (CubOc) (111) + (100). These different surface structures play a crucial role in the preferential hydrogenation of the model molecule. Additionally, we investigated the impact of the pretreatment condition on the catalytic selectivity of the well-shaped nanoparticles. We employed various techniques such as high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and room temperature carbon monoxide adsorption Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (RT-CO-FTIR) to determine the reconstructions of the particles under different pretreatment conditions. The results indicate that both the well-ordered surface fraction and pretreatment conditions of Pt nanoparticles had a moderate influence on both catalytic activity and selectivity. Overall, this study highlights the importance of analyzing the surface morphology and pretreatment conditions of nanoparticles in order to optimize catalytic activity and selectivity in reactions involving well-tuned surface structures. Acar, Ayşegül; Büyükdağ, Naci; Türten, Burak; Diker, Ersin; Çalışır, Gülsüm
This study investigated the relationship between brand identity, brand lifestyle congruence, brand satisfaction, and repurchase intention. In addition, this study examined how the primary reference group’s family and peer/friend affected individuals’ perceptions of brand identity, brand-lifestyle congruence, brand satisfaction, and purchase intention through a multi-group structural equation model. A total of 610 valid and useable responses, collected from a social media channel, were analyzed. Grounded in social identity theory and self-congruity theory, a set of hypotheses was examined within a research model. The findings show that brand identity significantly affects brand lifestyle congruence, brand satisfaction, and repurchase intentions. In addition, brand-lifestyle congruence significantly affects brand satisfaction and repurchase intentions, with brand satisfaction also significantly affecting purchase intentions. Also, high-income and elderly consumers tend to ignore the family and peer effects. Middle-aged, middle-income men who value product origin show a strong brand perception, and are less influenced by family. In contrast, women, typically lower-income and price-focused, are more receptive to family and peer effects and generally indifferent to product origin. This research advances brand identity literature by examining the effects of brand brand-lifestyle congruence, brand satisfaction, and purchase intention. It suggests that the synergy between brand identity, brand lifestyle congruence, and brand satisfaction significantly enhances repurchase intentions. Besides, examining profiles in the context of brands, consumers, and reference groups contributes additional value to the field.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ3DEVELOPING A MODEL SOFTWARE TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSMISSION LINES (HVTL) ON THE RESIDENTIAL LAND VALUE BY USING AHP METHOD
Marabaoğlu, Seda Nur; Uzun, Bayram
Due to High Voltage Transmission Lines (HVTL), easement expropriation is made and an easement price (compensation) is paid to the property owner. Since there is not a standard method, this price is calculated inappropriately and inaccurately. Therefore, either the property owner or the government suffers material damage. The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of HVTL factors on property value using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Additionally, within the scope of the study, the aim is to develop a software model that automatically detects impairment rate and easement prices. In the study, a total of 79 individuals from 21 different countries participated in the national and international survey. The weights of the factors were determined using the AHP. A model software was created by integrating the weight values and the interface software of the model was created. The model software was tested with sixty expert reports prepared by different experts collected from ten different provinces. The rate of error in the expert reports was found to be at least 0.38% and at most 84.98%. With this software, an appraisal standard that will largely eliminate the existing injustices in the determination of the easement price will be provided. In addition, the inconsistencies between the expert reports of similar parcels and easements will be reduced, and easement prices will be paid fairly.

Catal Reis, Hatice; Turk, Veysel
Early diagnosis of plant diseases is essential in reducing economic losses for farmers and increasing production efficiency. Therefore, Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems supported by artificial intelligence technologies can be developed to help diagnose diseases quickly and accurately by examining the symptoms and signs in plant leaves. In this study, Multi-head Attention Mechanism Depthwise Separable Convolution Inception Reduction Network (MDSCIRNet) architecture, an image-based deep convolutional neural network, is proposed for classifying potato leaf diseases. The main components of the MDSCIRNet architecture are depthwise separable convolution (DSC) and a multi-head attention mechanism. The proposed architecture has been compared with modern algorithms developed with DSC technology, such as Xception, MobileNet, and deep learning algorithms, such as ResNet101, InceptionV3, and EfficientNetB2, to evaluate its performance in the classification process. In addition, hybrid methods developed with the classical machine learning algorithms Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), and MDSCIRNet model, integrated deep learning model, hard voting ensemble learning model. Suggested methods such as these were also used in the experimental process. Moreover, techniques such as Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE), Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Networks (ESRGAN), and Hypercolumn were used to improve the image quality of the data set. In the experimental process, the MDSCIRNet deep learning architecture achieved 99.24% accuracy in the study using the original dataset. While a 99.11% accuracy rate was achieved with the integrated deep learning model and hard voting ensemble learning model, the highest success rate of 99.33% was performed in the study conducted with the MDSCIRNet + SVM method. This study contributes to developing new and effective strategies in the agricultural industry for the early diagnosis and control of potato plant diseases. Machine learning-based approaches offer the potential to minimize economic losses and increase productivity in production by allowing farmers to intervene early.

Background: The interaction between anthropometric measurements and muscular endurance and how these factors manifest in anatomical body awareness have not yet been fully investigated. It was aimed to examine the relationship between physical activity, body anthropometric measurements and endurance and anatomical body awareness in healthy individuals. Materials and methods: A total of 217 individuals aged 19–40 participated in the study. Participants were categorized into inactive (n = 65), minimally active (n = 80), and sufficiently active (n = 72) groups based on the international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ). Anthropometric measurements including shoulder, abdomen, waist, and hip circumferences were taken. Participants’ trunk muscle endurance and lower extremity endurance was assessed through various tests. Anatomic body awareness was evaluated using the Body Awareness Questionnaire (BAQ) with established validity. Results: While no significant difference in shoulder circumference measurements was found between the inactive and minimally active groups (p > 0.05), the sufficiently active group showed significantly higher shoulder circumference measurements compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). Significant differences were observed among all endurance tests between the groups (p < 0.05). Participants’ body endurance increased significantly with higher activity levels. Moreover, anatomic body awareness exhibited significant variation among the three groups (p < 0.05), with the sufficiently active group having the highest level of anatomic body awareness. Positive correlations were found between all endurance tests and anatomic body awareness (p < 0.05), as well as a positive correlation between physical activity levels and anatomic body awareness (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It is suggested that physical performance and endurance increase anatomical body awareness when applied with appropriate treatment methods, can be applied for a healthier life and can be an additional application in the clinical environment.

Necati, Çeli̇K; Bi̇Ngöl, Özkan
In this paper, Grover’s quantum search algorithm is analyzed using a classical computer by calculating the amplitudes and the probabilities of finding a single marked state for n=5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 27 qubit states. The calculations show that the marked state can be found in iterations, where N = 2n is the number of items. The possibility of improving Grover’s search algorithm to find a single item in N search elements is discussed by calculating the amplitudes and hence the probabilities of finding a single marked state for n=5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 qubit states. The calculations showed that the marked state could be found with sufficiently high probability in (ln(N)) iterations. This is quite a remarkable speed-up that can be achieved to find a single marked element in an unsorted N search element. Copyright 2021, Yıldız Technical University.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ2Theoretical analysis of stress-strain behavior of multi-layer RC beams under flexure
Öztekin, Ertekin
In this study, obtaining theoretical stress-strain curves and determining the parameters defining the equivalent rectangular stress block were aimed for 3 and 4-layered rectangular Reinforced Concrete (RC) cross-sections subjected to flexure. For these aims, the analytical stress-strain model proposed by Hognestad was chosen for the concrete grades (20 MPa ≤ fck≤60 MPa) used in this study. The tensile strength of the concrete was neglected and the thickness of the concrete layers in the compression zone of the concrete cross-section was taken as equal. In addition, while concrete strength was kept constant within each layer, concrete strengths belonging to separate layers were increased from the neutral axis towards the outer face of the compression zone of the concrete cross-section. After the equivalent rectangular stress block parameters were determined by numerical iterations, variations of these parameters depending on concrete strength in layers and layer numbers were obtained. Finally, some analytical equations have been proposed to predict the equivalent stress block parameters for the 3 and 4-layered RC cross-sections and validities of these proposed equations were shown by different metrics in this study.

In this article, the 1st and 6th paragraphs in the “Discussion” section contain several errors. The corrected paragraphs are given below. This study aimed to assess the spiritual well-being levels and spiritual care needs of individuals diagnosed with lung cancer. The findings revealed that the patients exhibited high spiritual well-being levels, with the “harmony with nature” sub dimension scoring particularly high in relation to spiritual well-being. This aligns with several studies which reported high spiritual well-being of cancer patients (Martins et al., 2020; Rabow & Knish, 2015).” The study identified high spiritual needs among the patients, with the specific subdimension “informing them about their health” obtaining the highest scores. Notably, in the current study, it was observed that patients’ needs in terms of “informing them about their health” increased, deviating from the emphasis on love, support, and bonding seen in other studies (Kırca et al., 2023; Shi et al., 2023). This divergence is thought to be linked to differences in the disease stage. The original article has been corrected.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2A new method of smoothness-constrained magnetotelluric modelling with the utility of Pareto-optimal multi-objective particle swarm optimization
Büyük, Ersin
Particle swarm optimization, one of the modern global optimization methods, is attracting widespread interest because it overcomes the difficulties of conventional inversion techniques, such as trapping at a local minimum and/or initial model dependence. The main characteristic of particle swarm optimization is the large search space of parameters, which in a sense allows the exploration of the entire objective function space if the input parameters are properly chosen. However, in the case of a high-dimensional model space, the numerical instability of the solution may increase and lead to unrealistic models and misinterpretations due to the sampling problem of particle swarm optimization. Therefore, smoothness-constrained regularization techniques used for the objective function or model reduction techniques are required to stabilize the solution. However, weighting and combining objective function terms is partly a subjective process, as the regularization parameter is generally chosen based on some kind of criteria of how the smoothing constraints affect the data misfits. This means that it cannot be completely predefined but needs to be adjusted during the inversion process, which begins with the response of an initial model. In this paper, a new modelling approach is proposed to obtain a smoothness-constrained model from magnetotelluric data utilizing multi-objective particle swarm optimization based on the Pareto optimality approach without using a regularization parameter and combining several objective function terms. The presented approach was verified on synthetic models and an application with field data set from the Çanakkale–Tuzla geothermal field in Turkey. Findings from these analyses confirm the usefulness of the method as a new approach for all constrained inversions of geophysical data without the need to combine the objective function terms weighted by a regularization parameter.

Kefir, which has many beneficial effects on health, is one of the most consumed fermented milk products worldwide. It is important to increase consumption of the fermented product for public health. In this study, it was aimed to increase the beneficial effects of kefir on public health. Therefore, kefirs produced from different types of milk (cow, buffalo, sheep, and goat) were concentrated, and obtained spreadable kefir samples were investigated in terms of their microbiological characteristic (lactic bacilli, lactic cocci, yeasts and moulds, total bacteria, and coliform bacteria), benzoic acid content, physicochemical properties (fat, total solid, ash content, acidity, pH, syneresis, viscosity, colour, and rheological properties), and sensory characteristic. It was determined that APC, lactic bacilli, lactic cocci, and yeast counts of the concentrated kefir samples changed between 6.90 and 8.64, 6.89 and 8.61, 7.42 and 8.72, and 2.17 and 5.39 log CFU/g, respectively, during storage. Mould and coliform bacteria were not detected in the samples. The concentrated kefir samples contained benzoic acid in the range of 18.30–119.58 mg/L. Results from this study showed that type of milk caused differences on APC, lactic bacilli, lactic cocci and yeast count, total solids, ash, fat, acidity, pH, syneresis, colour, viscosity and rheological parameters, and benzoic acid content. In addition, milk type affected sensory properties of the kefirs. Concentrated kefirs produced from cow and buffalo milk were the most liked by panellists. Finally, it was determined that concentrated kefir was favoured as a new product by most of the panellists.

Eyuboglu, Ekrem; Hasirci Tugcu, Zeynep; Kuzulugil, Kenan; Cavdar, Ismail Hakki
The need for reliable and uninterrupted communication systems in the marine environment has become critically important with increasing maritime activities, environmental monitoring, and the spread of autonomous systems. However, the complex structure of electromagnetic wave propagation in a sea environment limits the accuracy of the existing propagation models. Thus, the Modified Round Earth Loss (REL) model was first developed in this study to estimate the path loss more accurately in shore-to-ship communication. Subsequently, a piecewise modeling approach based on the principle of two-segment data modeling was proposed. In the Modified REL model, unlike the traditional REL model, the paths and gains of the direct and reflected waves were not considered equal in the calculations. Moreover, unlike in the classical approach, the receiver height was not taken as a fixed value; the estimated best receiver height value for each measurement was included in the calculations as a representation of the effect of roughness in the sea environment. Thus, the model is better adapted to various environmental conditions. In addition, the proposed piecewise model divides the propagation medium into two regions using a break point calculated by Fresnel zone theory. The Modified REL model was used for the first region and the log-distance model was used for the second region. This method allows for more accurate modeling of signal behaviors, especially at different distances. Experimental measurements and performance evaluations conducted using four different shore-to-ship communication scenarios show that the Modified REL model shows an average improvement of up to 3% in Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values compared to the classical REL model. Additionally, the proposed piecewise model improves the fitting error of the Modified REL model, which models the data as a single whole, by an average of 22.25%. These findings emphasize the necessity of propagation models that are sensitive and adaptable to environmental changes for maritime communication.
