Maximizing phonation: impact of inspiratory muscle strengthening on vocal durations and pitch range

Yilmaz, Coşkun; Bostanci, Özgür; Eken, Özgür; Alkahtani, Rania; Aldhahi, Monira I.

Background: This study investigated the acute effects of inspiratory muscle warm-up (IWU) on vocal performance in singers. Proper vocal and respiratory warm-up can enhance vocal range, quality, and endurance. The aim was to determine whether IWU improves maximum phonation time and pitch range, contributing to better voice production efficiency (vocal efficiency) and reduced fatigue. Materials and methods: Singers were selected from the Samsun State Opera and the Ballet Directorate (n = 16). This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the acute effects. The singers in the control group (SC = 8) performed only one session of routine voice warm-up, and the experimental group (SE = 8) conducted an inspiratory muscle warm-up (IWU) of 2 sets, 30 times/set at 40% maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) in addition to routine voice warm-up. Subsequently, All participants were then required to perform pre- and post- pulmonary function tests, maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), and voice recordings (note high pitch, note low pitch, high pitch durations and low pitch durations sustained with one breath, and maximum phonation duration). Results: All pulmonary function and muscle strength parameters improved in the SE group, with the highest increases in MIP (22.9%) and MEP (14.7%). No significant improvements were noted in the SC group (p > 0.05). The Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion showed that the SE group experienced less difficulty with their vocal performance after IWU (-11.6%, p = 0.006), while no significant change was observed in the SC group (p = 0.316). Both warm-up methods used in the study significantly affected the frequencies of high-pitch sounds (SE = 17.8%, SC = 10.9%, p = 0.003); however, the frequency of low-pitch sounds was not significantly affected (p = 0.437). IWU significantly affected the high-pitched note duration (p < 0.001; 32.17%), low-pitched note duration (p < 0.001; 27.11%), and maximum phonation time (p < 0.001; 21%), while routine voice warm-up did not significantly affect any parameter (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The combination of IWU with the general body and voice warm-up protocol can acutely improve vocal performance in terms of maximum phonation time, phonation times of the highest and lowest pitched sounds in a single breath, and vocal range levels.

Effect of mechanical milling parameters on the properties of electrolytic pure copper powders and hot pressed billets fabricated from recycled copper wastes

Akçay, Serhatcan Berk; Çuvalcı, Oğuzhan; Varol, Temel; Çuvalcı, Hamdullah; Kocaman, Mücahit; Alver, Ümit; Beder, Murat; Güler, Onur; Aksa, Hüseyin Can; Gasha, Shimelis Bihon

This study was conducted to comprehensively investigate the effect of mechanical milling parameters on the properties of electrolytic pure copper powders and hot pressed billets fabricated from recycled copper wastes. Three different milling speeds, five different milling times and three different ball to powder weight ratios were used to fully reveal the effect of the mechanical milling process on the properties of recovered Cu powders. The results show that as the milling time and milling speed increased, the initial dendritic morphology of the copper was transformed into a flake-like structure. At 400 rpm and a 5:1 BPR parameters, the average particle sizes of C3, C4, and C5 after 2, 4, and 8h were ∼52 μm, 83 μm, and 71 μm, respectively. This suggests that particle size initially increases due to shape change and cold-welding, but at longer durations, fracture becomes dominant. The I5 with d(0.5) = 69.32 μm exhibited a high flow rate of 5.88 g/s with an apparent density of 2.9 g/cm3.While the hardness value of the Cu samples (A1-bulk sample) produced by exposure to the lowest deformation during the mechanical milling is 95.02 HB, the hardness value of the Cu specimens (F5-bulk sample) showing the highest apparent density, best flow rate and highest density values is 109.31 HB. The electrical conductivity values were determined to be approximately 52.2 MS/m, 57.4 MS/m and 44.3 MS/m for A1-bulk, F5-bulk and H5-bulk, respectively. This study offers valuable insights into the relationship between milling parameters, powder characteristics, and final material properties.

Optimal design of inerter-assisted series tuned mass dampers for seismic vibration control of multi-story buildings

    Araz, Onur

This work introduces a framework for the optimal design of inerter-assisted series tuned mass dampers (STMDI) placed at the top story of a multi-story building under ground motion and performs comparative research to assess its effectiveness against conventional TMDI. The identical inertance ratio and total mass ratio are taken into consideration for the optimization of both control systems. In the frequency-domain analysis, the five design variables of the STMDI are optimized based on the minimization of the peak amplitude of the displacement transfer function at the top story of the building using the genetic algorithm (GA). The optimized variables are damping ratios (ξ1and ξ2), tuning frequency ratios (f1and f2), and mass ratio of the first to second TMD mass (µh). The proposed control system is applied to a 4-story, an 8-story, and a 16-story case-studies, and the optimal parameters are verified using eighty-five historical benchmark earthquakes in time domain analysis. These records are divided into three different groups according to their frequency content, i.e. PGA/PGV ratio: high, intermediate, and low. The results demonstrate that the STMDI performs better than the TMDI at the same mass and inertance ratio, especially at excitation frequencies close to resonance. The most important advantage of STMDI compared to TMDI is that it provides this performance in a wider frequency range and in an almost similar way. Finally, the seismic performances of STMDI and TMDI are compared considering ground motions with different frequency content.

Phenolic Profiles, Mineral Compositions, and Solvent-Driven Antioxidant Potentials of Two Robinia Species

Aktürk, Betül Kara; Arslan Burnaz, Nesibe

The genus Robinia, which belongs to the Fabaceae family, is a source of polyphenols and may be medicinally and pharmacologically effective against life-threatening diseases. This study investigated and compared the phenolic profiles, mineral contents, and antioxidant activities of two Robinia species. The antioxidant activities and phenolic/flavonoid contents of aerial parts of Robinia pseudoacacia and Robinia × ambigua plants at various solvents and concentrations were investigated in detail for the first time. The findings revealed that 50% acetone leaf extracts are promising sources of high phenol/flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity. Liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–ESI–MS/MS) analysis allowed the identification of nine flavonoids and seven phenolic acids. Pelargonidin chloride, a common anthocyanidin with estrogenic activity, was the major component in all samples. Moreover, inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) shows that all samples were rich in K (12 886.70–26 078.11 mg/kg), Ca (1550.51–6011.03 mg/kg), and Mg (1676.13–3115.10 mg/kg). Leaves stand out compared to flowers. It is considered that the results obtained may guide studies in the fields of medicine, cosmetics, pharmacology, and so forth.

Novel Sulfonylhydrazones With Sulfonate Ester Framework: Promising Dual Inhibitors of AChE and hCAs

Öztürk, Cansu; Balci, Neslihan; Aslan, Osman Nuri; Kalay, Erbay

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Treatment strategies for AD vary depending on cognitive and behavioral symptoms, with cholinergic replacement therapy using acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors being one of the primary approaches. Recent studies have also identified human carbonic anhydrases (hCAs) as significant therapeutic targets for AD, offering new opportunities for the development of innovative treatments. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have been shown to prevent early mitochondrial damage and inhibit H2O2 production, thereby reducing amyloid plaque formation. Building on the promising potential of hydrazones particularly sulfonyl hydrazones as anticholinesterase agents, we synthesized 12 novel chlorine-substituted sulfonyl hydrazone compounds containing aryl sulfonate ester groups. These compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on AChE, hCA I, and hCA II enzymes. The synthesized compounds exhibited low nanomolar inhibitory activity, with Ki values ranging from 9.58 ± 2.22 to 104.04 ± 23.82 nM for AChE, 9.12 ± 2.21 to 477.63 ± 218.52 nM for hCA I, and 17.54 ± 7.74 to 564.62 ± 213.98 nM for hCA II. Notably, compound 6 showed strong inhibitory activity against hCA I (Ki = 9.12 ± 2.21 nM; acetazolamide (AZA) = 26.54 ± 3.11 nM) and hCA II (Ki = 17.54 ± 7.74 nM; AZA = 21.73 ± 2.42 nM), whereas compound 4 exhibited superior AChE inhibition (Ki = 9.58 ± 2.22 nM; TAC = 23.12 ± 2.05 nM). The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized using advanced spectroscopic techniques, including FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy.

Insight into the adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) ions and 4-chlorophenol from aqueous media on cationic surfactant-modified cucumber peels

Ozeken, Sengul Tugba; Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal

A new and cost-effective adsorbent material was developed by chemical modification of cucumber peels (CP) with a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The adsorptive behavior of CTAB-modified cucumber peels (CMCP) was investigated in the retention of an organic pollutant (4-chlorophenol) and an inorganic pollutant (Cr(VI)) through batch experiments. The adsorbents were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. Influences of initial concentrations of both pollutants, dosage of CMCP, initial solution pH, contact time, and foreign ions were parameters used to specify the optimized conditions. Results of the experiments were evaluated by three kinetic models, namely pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models, to find out the dominant mechanisms in the retention of 4-chlorophenol and Cr(VI). Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models were applied to the adsorption data to estimate the adsorption capacity of CMCP and to describe the interactions between the species. Langmuir isotherm model fitted the data well, and the maximum Cr(VI) and 4-chlorophenol adsorption capacities of CMCP were 84.03 mg g−1 and 107.5 mg g−1, respectively. Consequently, CMCP demonstrated outstanding performance in the adsorption of both inorganic and organic pollutants, offering a low-cost, easily prepared alternative to other adsorbents reported in the literature.

Külekçi, Gökhan; Hacıefendioğlu, Kemal; Başağa, Hasan Basri

The precise identification of quartz minerals is crucial in mineralogy and geology due to their widespread occurrence and industrial significance. Traditional methods of quartz identification in thin sections are labor-intensive and require significant expertise, often complicated by the coexistence of other minerals. This study presents a novel approach leveraging deep learning techniques combined with hyperspectral imaging to automate the identification process of quartz minerals. The utilizied four advanced deep learning models—PSPNet, U-Net, FPN, and LinkNet—has significant advancements in efficiency and accuracy. Among these models, PSPNet exhibited superior performance, achieving the highest intersection over union (IoU) scores and demonstrating exceptional reliability in segmenting quartz minerals, even in complex scenarios. The study involved a comprehensive dataset of 120 thin sections, encompassing 2470 hyperspectral images prepared from 20 rock samples. Expert-reviewed masks were used for model training, ensuring robust segmentation results. This automated approach not only expedites the recognition process but also enhances reliability, providing a valuable tool for geologists and advancing the field of mineralogical analysis.

Turkish Version of the Sense of Belonging in Nursing School Scale: Validity and Reliability for Nursing Students

Tuncer, Metin; Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Yalçınkaya, Turgay; İnce, Merve; Yücel, Şebnem Çınar; Khorshid, Leyla

Background: While a sense of belonging may be necessary for human motivation, the disruption of this sense of belonging among nurses can have implications for patient care and safety. Aim: This article was aimed at assessing the sense of belonging experienced by nursing students in three different settings (clinic, classroom, and student group) by conducting the validity and reliability of the Sense of Belonging in Nursing School (SBNS) scale, adapting it to the Turkish language and culture, and reporting the results. Methods: The study was conducted in a nursing faculty between March and July 2023. The study sample comprised 193 nursing students. We performed the content validity assessment of the 19-item SBNS scale after conducting a structural validity analysis using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The Cronbach’s alpha and item-total score correlations were examined to assess the scale’s internal consistency. Results: The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin measure of sampling adequacy for the SBNS instrument was 0.903, and the result of Bartlett’s test of sphericity was significant (χ² = 3182.764, p = 0.000), indicating that the scale was suitable for factor analysis. The eigenvalue analysis identified a four-factor structure explaining 76.74% of the total variance. These four factors were subsequently named as follows: (1) clinical compliance, (2) social belonging, (3) school support, and (4) clinical support. The goodness-of-fit values for the model obtained from the CFA were χ2/SD = 2.15, comparative fit index = 0.947, goodness-of-fit index = 0.852, normed fit index = 0.906, incremental fit index = 0.948, and root mean square error of approximation = 0.077, suggesting that the model fit was acceptable, and the four-factor structure was well distributed. The scale exhibited high internal consistency (α = 0.933). Discussion: The SBNS scale is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring the sense of belonging experienced by nursing students in three different environments. Further research is needed to establish its predictive validity. Conclusions and Implications for Nursing: This study was conducted, and there was no scale used in the Turkish literature to measure nursing students’ sense of school belonging; thus, it is the first in this sense.

A comparative study of cognitive function and reaction time in obese and non-obese adults

Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Şahin, Kezban; Ayvaz, Hilal

Objective: Obesity may negatively affect the physical health and cognitive functions of individuals and delay their reaction time to stimuli. However, the association among obesity, cognitive functions, and reaction times is yet to be fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of obesity on cognitive functions and visual and auditory reaction times in adults. Methods: Data of 100 participants (50 obese and 50 normal) were analyzed in the study. Anthropometric parameters and 24-h dietary recall data were recorded. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to evaluate the cognitive functions, Simple Reaction Time Task (SRTT)-Visual and SRTT-Auditory were used to assess visual and auditory reaction times of the participants, respectively. Results: The mean MoCA score of the obese was significantly lower than normal (17.46 and 25.22, respectively; p < 0.001). In addition, the mean auditory (p < 0.001) and visual (p < 0.05) reaction times of obese were significantly longer than normal. Similarly, this condition was also observed for the fastest and lowest values of auditory and visual reaction times. Additionally, obesity caused a decrease in the MoCA score (β = -0.762; p < 0.001) and delayed visual (β = 0.423; p < 0.001) and auditory (β = 0.590; p < 0.001) reactions. The negative effect of obesity was maintained after controlling for potential factors (MoCA, β = -0.594; p < 0.001; SRTT-Auditory, β = 0.409; p < 0.01; SRTT-Visual, β = 0.330; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Obese participants showed worse cognitive, auditory and visual performance. Additional research will be necessary in the future to shed light on the fundamental mechanisms involved.

Niche dynamics and climate change sensitivity in western Palearctic Zamenis ratsnakes (Reptilia: Colubridae)

Vaissi, Somaye; Kürşat Şahin, Mehmet; Kurnaz, Muammer

Climate change poses a significant threat to ectothermic, dispersal-limited reptiles such as Zamenis snakes in the western Palearctic. This study used ensemble ecological models to assess the potential distribution of six Zamenis species under climate change scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5). In addition, we examined niche dynamics through overlap, equivalency, and similarity analyses. Results reveal distinct ecological niches for each species, primarily influenced by temperature and precipitation. Projected distribution shifts vary across species, with some species like Z. persicus and Z. situla showing potential for range expansion, while others such as Z. lineatus and Z. scalaris face significant habitat loss. Z. hohenackeri and Z. longissimus exhibit complex patterns of both expansion and contraction. Niche analyses indicate varying degrees of overlap among species, with a trend toward niche conservatism. This study underscores the importance of niche ecology in understanding climate change impacts and highlights the need for species-specific conservation strategies.

MODELING THE KINETICS OF HYDROXYMETHYLFURFURAL (HMF) FORMATION IN POMEGRANATE SOUR PRODUCED BY DIFFERENT EVAPORATION METHODS

Erdoğdu, Esma Gülbahar; Akar, Bülent; Baltacı, Cemalettin

Pomegranate sour is a traditional functional food that is widely consumed in Türkiye. The aim of this study is to determine the most convenient evaporation method to keep the amount of HMF, a carcinogenic substance formed as a result of high temperatures in the production of pomegranate sour, at low levels. The pomegranate sours were produced using five different evaporation methods (atmospheric pressure (AP), freeze-drying (FD), open air (OA), vacuum assisted (VA) and fan assisted (FA)) and the amount of HMF formed during the process was determined. Kinetic calculations showed that VA and FA methods followed first-order reaction kinetics at 60, 70 and 80 °C, while OA, FD and AP methods followed zero-order reaction kinetics at 80, 90 and 100 °C. The mean Q10 value was 1.0006, while the activation energy (Ea) ranged from 72.56 to 126.38 kJ/mol. It was found that the amount of HMF formed varied according to the method, temperature and production time and that the reaction rates increased with increasing temperature, especially for the OA method. In addition, pH, titratable acidity, invert and total sugar content, color, Brix and browning index were analyzed and a kinetic model including all these factors was developed.

Hydrodynamic optimization of full-scale aeration tanks using field measurements and computational fluid dynamics modeling

Yılmaz Çelik, Damla; Yılmaz, Naz; Şibil, Rahim; Aras, Egemen; Vaheddoost, Babak

Improving energy efficiency and operational performance in wastewater treatment plants largely relies on precise hydrodynamic analysis. In this context, field-based studies are essential for understanding system behavior under real operational conditions. This study was conducted at a full-scale wastewater treatment plant, where flow dynamics in the aeration tank were evaluated through extensive field measurements and computational fluid dynamics modeling. Data were collected from 98 locations across 15 different depth levels using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler and a Hach FH950 velocity meter. The numerical model was initially validated with the help of experimental field data, enabling an accurate assessment of flow characteristics at varying depths. Results revealed that the low-velocity zones and non-uniform velocity distributions negatively affect system performance. It is also concluded that the inlet and outlet positions disturb the favorable circulation patterns and flow uniformity. Geometric optimization strategies were implemented to develop solutions, which led to a more uniform velocity distribution and improved hydraulic efficiency. By integrating detailed field measurements with numerical modeling, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of aeration tank hydrodynamics and offers practical design recommendations for improving overall system performance.

Assessment of Seismic Responses of Square-Hollow-Section Joints in a Lattice Girder with Soil-Structure Interaction

Ozturk, Kasif Furkan; Ozyurt, Emre; Araz, Onur; Cakir, Tufan

The fixed base approach is widely used to obtain the seismic behaviour of Square Hollow Section (SHS) joints in a lattice girder. However, in some cases where soil-structure interaction (SSI) can be relatively significant, this approach may result in incorrect acquisition of the natural periods and dynamic responses of the lattice girders using welded tubular joints. This situation may negatively affect the safety of the structure by causing an underestimation of the dynamic loads acting on the structure. Therefore, this study evaluates the seismic behaviour of SHS joints in a typical lattice girder exposed to different ground motions considering SSI. A nonlinear finite element analysis software, Abaqus, performs the dynamic analyses considering six earthquake excitations with three different frequency contents (a ratio of peak ground acceleration (PGA) to peak ground velocity (PGV)) and four different soil types. After verifying the numerical model, it is determined that 3D solid elements should be used to capture the actual seismic behaviour of the tubular joints in a steel truss frame with or without SSI. A comprehensive parametric study is then carried out to evaluate the peak displacement and stress values on the SHS joints with and without SSI under different ground motions with different PGA/PGV ratios. The findings show that the stresses are concentrated around the column and bottom chord connection region. Besides, the SSI mechanism significantly affects the peak stress and displacement values of the SHS joints, especially in soft soil types. Furthermore, it is observed that the PGA/PGV ratio significantly changes the seismic responses of the steel truss frame.

Ulutaşdemir, Nilgün; Uzun, Sevda; Kulakaç, Nurşen

Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the disaster management experiences and psychosocial problems of individuals who survived the earthquake in Turkey during the earthquake of the century. Materials and Methods: A qualitative research design, phenomenological research, was applied in this study. This qualitative study included 33 volunteer earthquake survivors. The interviews were conducted using WhatsApp. Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method was used to analyze the data. Results: In the analysis of the data, five themes (perception of the earthquake concept, things to do during an earthquake, actions taken to survive under the rubble, meeting everyday chores and dealing with post-earthquake challenges, perceptions of disaster management), and fifteensubthemes (features of the earthquake, emotions, thoughts, correct actions, incorrect actions, actions for the body, situation-oriented actions, housing, nutrition, hygiene, sleep, security, preparation, coping, and intervention) were identified. Conclusion: The study showed that the earthquake negatively affected individuals psychosocially, but the effective spiritual coping mechanisms utilized to cope with the catastrophic event under the rubble supported the survival process. In addition, it was determined that the participants believed that religion and spirituality were important in coping with the earthquake.

A Novel BPA Derivation Method Using Linguistic Fuzzy Sets in Dempster-Shafer Theory

Başkan, Elif; Şahin, Rıdvan; Kahraman, C.; Oztaysi, B.; Cebi, S.; Cevik Onar, S.; Tolga, C.; Ucal Sari, I.; Otay, I.

In this study, we present a new method for developing Basic Probability Assignment (BPA) using Linguistic Fuzzy Sets (LFS). Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) is used to efficiently combine different data sources. The use of LFS provides a robust structure for managing uncertainty in decision making by representing knowledge in linguistic terms. However, effectively integrating multiple uncertain sources requires a strong probabilistic approach. To overcome this challenge, we propose a method to derive BPA values directly from linguistic terms, ensuring compatibility with the DST fusion rule. We then use the Dempster-Shafer combination rule to combine information from various sources, thereby improving the reliability of the decision-making process.

The Central Black Sea region is a very dense region in terms of orchid diversity. As a consequence of the floral studies, 32 species of salep orchids were identified in the Central Black Sea Region. The aim of this current study was to identify the secondary metabolite profiles of leaves and tubers of two orchid species (Anacamptis palustris and Ophrys apifera) with different drying methods by HPLC analysis and to determine their antibacterial and antioxidant activities. For this purpose, different drying methods were applied to the roots and leaves of these two species. The species were dried by 3 different techniques: shade, lyophilizer and oven. After the aqueous extracts were obtained, their antibacterial and antioxidant activities were tested and HPLC analysis was completed. The data obtained from aqueous extracts as a result of drying techniques were compared with the data obtained from fresh plant aqueous extracts. Antibacterial properties were tested against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 bacteria. No antibacterial activity was found in the study. Antioxidant properties were tested via DPPH and FRAP assays. As a result of DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the highest antioxidant efficiency in A. palustris was observed in leaves dried in lyophilizer (76.53%), in the shade (62.13%) and in the oven (54.12%), respectively. Nine different phenolic compounds were found in aqueous extracts of these species. Epicatechin, Gallic Acid, Rutin, Syringic Acid phenolic compounds were observed the most in HPLC analysis. The results of current study suggest that these extracts have antioxidant and phenolic contents and should be investigated in more comprehensive studies.

Energy-Efficient 8-PAM Optical DAC Design for Visible Light Communication Systems

Başer, Oğuzhan; Küçük, Mehmet Ali; Albayrak, Cenk; Türk, Kadir

This paper presents a cost-effective and energy-efficient optical digital-to-analog converter (ODAC) transmitter scheme for visible light communication (VLC) systems. The proposed ODAC transmitter enables data transmission while providing lighting, as desired in VLC systems, unlike existing ODAC structures in the literature, by switching power LEDs at high speeds with a MOSFET-based switching circuit design. This paper also discusses the ODAC design stages and presents the points to be considered in detail. In addition, by implementing the hardware design of an ODAC transmitter with a 3-bit resolution, that is, capable of generating 8-PAM signals, based on the proposed ODAC architecture, experimental studies are conducted for energy efficiency and communication performance results via the established VLC system using the designed ODAC. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ODAC transmitter achieves a data transmission rate of 18.75 Mbps with a bit error rate (BER) below the forward error correction (FEC) limit at a communication distance of 4 m, while also exhibiting a high power efficiency of 94%.
