Do Exchange Rates and Budget Deficit Lead to Inflation? A Panel Causality Analysis on Developing Asian Countries

Dogru, Bulent; Recepoglu, Mursit; Çelik, Orkun

In developing economies, budget deficit and exchange rates can lead inflation through shallow financial markets. In this study it is tested whether budget deficit and exchange rates cause inflation in long-run and short-run for 22 developing Asian countries for the time period of 1980 and 2011. The reason why we select all the developing countries from one region is that we assume all countries have fixed unit effect in the models. In this study we use panel cointegration, error correction model and panel causality methods as empiric test. Findings suggest that in short-run there is no causality running from exchange rate and budget deficit to inflation but in long-run budget deficit and exchange rates cause inflation.

Suras Period And Adam (Pbuh)-Demons Parable

    Sahin, Davut

Suras of the Qur'an are divided into two periods. These are Meccan and Medinian. It is known in two ways. 1. Rumors 2. Criteria. One of the criteria is as follows: Adam-demon stories are at the Meccan sura. However, it is outside Baqara. In our study, we will discuss this criterion. Which words in stories or issues are related to the Medinan period? Do you have a sign in the parable? According to the commentators, what is the relevance of the parable and the Medinan period? In this respect, al-Tabari and al-Razi's explanation will be examined. Two commentators considering the following description will be proposed: When determining the period of suras, information during the period of revelation should be heeded.

Source Value of Foreign Travel Books in Terms of Ottoman City Histories

    Yilmaz, Ozgur

During the writing an Ottoman city history, travelogues have an important place among other sources that could be consulted. These books, their authors whether local or foreign, contain valuable information worth checking out carefully in many ways. Though different discussion on travel books about their value of historical source exists, they reflect lively description of time and place, cultural structure of the period and make us possible to look at history from a different aspect. In this context, travelogues, as a source of Ottoman city histories, gained more importance in terms of Ottoman historiography. This paper aims to make, after a general review of the studies on travel accounts in Turkey, a few observations in terms of source value of travel books in city historiography.

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate yield, quality, and other characteristics in selected lines of crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum L. Gaertn.) at Ataturk University Agriculture Faculty Research Farm under unirrigated conditions during 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 in Eastern Turkey. The research was established in 2006 as a randomized complete block with three replications. Lines AC1 (Reg. No. PL-12, PI 667083), AC2 (Reg. No. PL-13, PI 667084), AC23 (Reg. No. PL-14, PI 667085), AC29 (Reg. No. PL-15, PI 667086), AC37 (Reg. No. PL-16, PI 667087), AC39 (Reg. No. PL-17, PI 667088), AC65 (Reg. No. PL-18, PI 667089), AC66 (Reg. No. PL-19, PI 667090), AC83 (Reg. No. PL-20, PI 667091), AC107 (Reg. No. PL-21, PI 667092), AC113 (Reg. No. PL-22, PI 667093), AC121 (Reg. No. PL-23, PI 667094), AC125 (Reg. No. PL-24, PI 667095) and Tohum Islah population (Reg. No. PL-11, PI 667082) (control) were evaluated for dry matter yield (DMY), seed yield (SY), straw yield (SWY), crude protein content (CPC), crude protein yield (CPY), stem number, plant height, and fertile tiller ratio. Forage DMY and SY increased over the first 4 yr, but the yields decreased due to the aging of the crested wheatgrass stand in the subsequent year. There were significant differences for lines in all variables, except for SWY and CPC. Particularly, lines AC1, AC23, AC29, AC37, AC39, AC65, AC66, AC107, and AC121 in DMY; AC1, AC37, AC83, AC107, AC113, AC121, and AC125 in SY; and AC23, AC39, and AC113 in CPY showed significant improvement compared with the original parent material. The results of DMY, SY, and CPY show that selection studies were effective. Selected lines will be useful for breeding studies and livestock production.

Tutar, Nuri; Yesilkaya, Selma; Memetoglu, Mehmet Erdem; Özel, Deniz; Bosnak, Emre

Introduction: Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are major components of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of chronic bronchitis 20 years and over living in the center of Gumushane and to analyze the risk factors. Materials and Methods: The study is targeted to reach 373 people who represent the center of Gumushane, 368 (98.6%) people have been reached. Participants were filled modified version of the questionnaire created by the Medical Research Council by face-to-face interview technique. Results: The prevalence of chronic bronchitis was 14.1%. The average age was in the chronic bronchitis group and nonchronic bronchitis group was respectively 43.2 +/- 12.9, 39.3 +/- 11.6, and the differance was statistically significant (p<0.05). Considering the relationship between cigarette smoking with chronic bronchitis, it was more frequent in smokers than nonsmokers (p<0.001, OR 4.74, 95% CI 2.47-9.17). Chronic bronchitis was observed in passive smokers than in non-smokers (p=0.004, OR 2.86, 95% CI 1.36-6.03). Occupational exposure to dust, fumes and history of childhood pulmonary diseases were increased chronic bronchitis prevalence (respectively, p<0.001, OR 9.53, 95% CI 4.56-19.94; p<0.001, OR 12.14, 95% CI 5.87-25.12). Male gender, low income level and to warm up with stove were found statistically significant by univariate logistic regression analysis but these risk factors were not statistically significant in the multivariate analysis. Educational level was not found statistically significant in both analysis (p>0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of chronic bronchitis was 14.1% in 20 years and older adults living in the center of Gumushane. Old age (especially over the age of 50), active or passive smoking, occupational history of dust, fumes and history of childhood pulmonary diseases were found to be risk factors for chronic bronchitis.

A rare cause of acute respiratory failure: spontaneous pneumomediastinum due to cocaine use

Memetoglu, Mehmet Erdem; Kalkan, Asim; Tutar, Nuri; Kurtcan, Serpil; Gündüz, Abdulkadir

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is defined as free air in mediastinum without any underlying pulmonary pathology. Although spontaneous pneumomediastinum is a rarely seen clinical entity, it is one of the most common reasons of sudden pleuritic chest pain in healthy young individuals. Cocaine inhalation is also associated with the development of spontaneous pneumomediastinum. Our case having spontaneous pneumomediastinum was referred to our emergency service with the complaint of acute respiratory failure due to cocaine abuse, and the etiology, clinical presentation and the treatment of the disease were evaluated in our study.

The Anesthetic Effects of Clove Oil and 2-Phenoxyethanol on Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) at Different Concentrations and Temperatures

    Yildiz, M.; Kayim, M.; Akin, S.

In this study, anesthetic effects of five different concentrations of 2-phenoxyethanol (0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 ml/L) and clove oil (0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50 ml/L) on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were studied at temperatures 7, 13 and 18 degrees C. For this purpose, 900 fish (39.08 +/- 1.13 g and 15.48 +/- 0.21 cm) were used in the experiment. Induction time of 2-phenoxyethanol and clove oil varied between 1.05 and 3.36 min at all concentrations, except for 0.2 ml/L (for 2-phenoxyethanol only) and at every temperature application. Full recovery time occurred between 2.44 and 7.14 min for 2-phenoxyethanol and 3.23 - 6.11 min for clove oil. It was found that full recovery times significantly increased with increase in 2-phenoxyethanol concentrations (r(2)=0.81). The same increasing trend was observed in clove oil, but the increase was not strong compared to 2-phenoxyethanol (r(2)=0.21). On the other hand, full induction times of 2-Phenoxyethanol and clove oil significantly declined with the increase in concentrations (r(2)=0.74; r(2)=0.84 for 2-phenoxyethanol and clove oil, respectively). Based on the ideal induction (less than 3 min) and recovery (less than 5 min) time criteria, it can be suggested that the most appropriate concentrations for rainbow trout were 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 ml/L for 2-phenoxyethanol and 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 ml/L for clove oil.

The Effect of Kefir Consumption on Human Immune System: A Cytokine Study

Adiloglu, Ali Kudret; Gönülates, Nurettin; Isler, Mehmet; Senol, Altug

The systemic effects of bioactive peptides which are produced by the fermentation of milk via the microorganisms found in kefir have been the subject of interest in recent years. Bioactive peptides activate innate immunity by stimulating macrophages, increasing phagocytosis, augmenting NO and cytokine production and boosting the lumen levels of IgG and 19A(+) B-lymphocytes. The aim of the present study was to determine the serum cytokine profiles of healthy volunteers after kefir consumption to evaluate helper T (TH) cell polarization and to bring out the effects on native and allergic immune responses. The study was designed as a prospective and self-controlled study. A total of 18 healthy volunteers (age range: 20-40 yrs, mean age: 35.5 +/- 7.38 yrs) from a university hospital staff were recruited to the study, with the approval of ethical board and informed consent. The body mass indices of all participants were between normal range (20.10-25.70 kg/m(2)). After two weeks of a diet free from fermented products, the participants consumed 200 mL kefir daily, for six weeks. Kefir product was prepared by using kefir starter culture (Danisco Biolacta Sp - 05223B 10001, Poland) which contains Lactobacillus spp., Leuconostoc spp., Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis and Streptococcus termophilus, an overnight incubation at 26 C, and consumed freshly. Fasting blood samples of subjects were collected just before kefir use (0th week), at the end of the 3rd and 6th weeks of kefir consumption, and three weeks after cessation of kefir usage (9th week). Serum TNF-alpha, IL-1, IL-5, IL-8 and TGF-beta levels were measured by using commercial ELISA kits (BioSource, Belgium and Invitrogen, USA). Hemoglobin, serum creatinine and ALT levels of all subjects were also determined for follow-up. All volunteers completed the study period without any problem and declared no complaint. Hemoglobin, creatinine and ALT levels did not change with kefir consumption. Serum IL-8 levels were decreased at 3rd and 6th weeks (p<0.001) and were at low levels at 9th week (p=0.005) when compared with baseline levels (0th week). Serum IL-5 levels were increased at 3rd week (0th-3rd weeks; p=0.01) and decreased by a rebound effect at 9th (6th-9th week p=0.003). TNF-alpha levels were increased with kefir consumption (p=0.046) but the increase was insignificant in paired comparisons and the level was borderline between 0th and 6th weeks (p=0.013). IL-5 and TNF-alpha levels returned to their original levels (0th week) at 9th week. Levels of the other cytokines (IL-1 and TGF-beta) did not change significantly with kefir usage. These results indicated that kefir use increased polarization of the immune response towards TH, type and decreased TH, type response and accordingly allergic response. The decrease in IL-8 level due to kefir use, might control the inflammatory response by suppressing neutrophil chemotaxis and activation. On the other hand it was also concluded that increased IL-5 might stimulate secretory IgA at gastrointestinal mucosa leading to a more efficient immune response in the intestinal lumen.

Sequence Variant in the LPIN1 gene in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

Kural, Birgul Vanizor; Deger, Orhan; Erem, Cihangir; Yücesan, Fulya Balaban; Barlak, Yasam; Turan, Ibrahim; Aliyazicioglu, Rezzan

Objective: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex disease characterized by insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-cholesterol level. The aim of the study was to evaluate the sequence variations in the LPIN1 gene in MetS. This gene codes lipin-1 protein which functions as Mg-dependent phosphatidic phosphatase enzyme and transcriptional coactivator. Material and Methods: The study groups included 73 MetS (19 M/54 F) and 56 non-MetS (16 M/40 F). Sequence variation in exons 2, 4, 5 and 14 of the LPIN1 gene were investigated by DNA sequencing method. Results: c.696 G>C variant (p.S232S) in exon 5 was observed in only one women with MetS. But this variation is not important because of coding same amino acid. Conclusion: Any important sequence variant was not detected in exons 2, 4, 5 and 14 in the LPIN1 gene in MetS.

Evaluation of cardiovascular risk factors among university students in Turkey: a cross-sectional survey

    Kutlu, Rasim; Memetoglu, Mehmet Erdem

Background - Recent data indicate increasing rates of mortality from cardiovascular (CV) disease in Turkey. This study aimed to evaluate CV disease risk factors among university students in Northern Turkey. Methods - In this cross sectional descriptive study, 302 students were randomly recruited (171 females (57%) and 131 males (43%), mean age of 20 +/- 2.1 years). Blood glucose, cholesterol profile (total, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterols), triglyceride, glycosylated haemoglobin, resting blood pressure, and body mass index were measured using standard protocols. All participants were asked to complete a questionnaire including questions on lifestyle, genetic predisposition, smoking habit, and psychosocial factors. Results - The mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure of students were 127.1 +/- 13.5 mmHg and 78.3 +/- 12.4 mmHg. The mean values were 98.4 +/- 14.2 mg/dL for fasting blood glucose value, 5.4 +/- 0.4 for HbA(1c), 80.0 +/- 10.3 beats/min for heart rate, for total cholesterol 199.1 +/- 24.6 mg/dL, 43.8 +/- 9.9 mg/dL for HDL, 114.7 +/- 24.1 mg/dL for LDL, 199.1 +/- 24.6 mg/dL for trygliceride, 24.8 +/- 3.6 kg/m(2) for body mass index, 97.6 +/- 17.9 cm for waist circumference. No significant difference was observed between gender according to CV risk factors' values statistically. It was observed that 111 (36.8%) students were overweight, 32 (10.6%) were obes. About 135 (44.0%) of students had abnormally unacceptable WC value. Smoking habit was seen in 130 (43.0%) students [73 (24.2%) male and 57 (18.9%) female]. Conclusion - A substantial proportion of Turkish students were overweight or obese, and had smoking habit. Our results underscore the need to implement health promotion programmes and perform large-scale epidemiological studies within the general Turkish young adult population.

Coronary Flow Reserve and Myocardial Performance Index in Newly Diagnosed Diabetic Patients

Kalkan, Gulhan Yuksel; Gür, Mustafa; Sahin, Durmus Yildiray; Baykan, Ahmet Oytun; Elbasan, Zafer; Kuloglu, Osman; Kivrak, Ali; Türkoglu, Caner; Arik, Osman Ziya; Çayli, Murat

BackgroundPatients with diabetes mellitus (DM) are at high risk of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. A reduction of coronary flow reserve (CFR) has been demonstrated in diabetic patients without coronary artery stenosis. In this study, we investigated the association between LV myocardial diastolic and systolic functions and the CFR in newly diagnosed diabetic patients in the absence of coronary artery disease. MethodWe studied 88 patients (mean age 4910years) with newly diagnosed DM and 40 healthy control subjects (mean age 509years). All subjects underwent transthoracic echocardiography. The myocardial performance index (MPI) was determined by using pulsed-wave Doppler. The CFR was calculated as the hyperemic to resting coronary diastolic peak velocities ratio. ResultsPatients with diabetes had significantly longer mitral E-wave deceleration time and higher MPI value than control group (P=0.023 and P<0.001, respectively). The mean CFR was lower in diabetic patients compared with controls (P=0.001). The MPI was significantly correlated with CFR (r=-0.371, P<0.001), LV ejection fraction (r=-0.274, P=0.018) E/A ratio (r=-0.244, P=0.024), and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (r=0.476, P<0.001). Multivariate regression analysis showed that MPI was independently associated with CFR (=-0.292, P<0.0001) and HbA1c level (=0.372, P<0.0001). ConclusionsThe MPI was independently associated with CFR in newly diagnosed diabetic patients. The decrease in CFR may cause LV systolic and diastolic dysfunction in asymptomatic diabetic patients.

Comparison of the safety and efficacy of ivabradine and nebivolol mono- and combination therapies in the treatment of stable angina pectoris patients with left ventricular dysfunction

Kutlu, Rasim; Memetoglu, Mehmet Erdem; Muratalievic, Tolkun Murataliev

We aimed to investigate the pharmacoeconomic efficacy of ivabradine and nebivolol in treatment of stable angina pectoris patients with left ventricular dysfunction prospectively. Pharmacoeconomic analysis was performed by using cost minimization analysis, and cost effectiveness analysis. After 6 months' treatment LVEF for the nebivolol group (17 patients, 50%) improved by (38 +/- 6.5) to (41 +/- 3.2), (p>0.05) and for the ivabradine group (17 patients, 50%) (37 +/- 5.4) to (41 +/- 2.3), (p>0.05), mean MET value in the nebivolol group increased from (3.7 +/- 1.2) to (5.5 +/- 1.6), (p>0.05), versus from (3.6 +/- 1.5) to (5.5 +/- 1.4), (p>0.05) in the ivabradine group, cost minimization analysis results showed a difference in the total cost of treatment was US$ 5288.7 in favor of nebivolol. The findings suggest that nebivolol is more cost-effective than ivabradine in the treatment of patients with left ventricular dysfunction.
