Seferoğlu, Ayşegül Güneş; Seferoğlu, Mehmet Tevfik; Akpinar, Muhammet Vefa
The objective of this research was to assess the elastic deformations and permanent strains of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) material as a base layer when it is treated or untreated with pozzolanic cement under cyclic loads. A large-scale cyclic plate loading testing (CPLT) device was developed for studying the mechanical characteristics of pavement base layer. The laboratory test results indicated that when the RAP percentage of the mixtures increased, elastic deformations and permanent strains increased, but the opposite was true when the cement percentage increased. It was concluded that 100% RAP material can be used in base layers with 3% pozzolanic cement. The obtained deformation values and strain rates can be used as reasonable default design input values by pavement designers when using RAP as a substitute for natural aggregate base layers.

Temizel, İrfan; Arslan, Mehmet; Yücel, Cem; Yazar, Emel Abdioğlu; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aslan, Zafer
Late Cretaceous felsic plutons in the Eastern Pontides orogenic belt of Turkey are found in varying ages, sizes and compositions. The Late Cretaceous syenitic bodies, namely Direkli and Yeniköy Tepe plutons in the Ordu area, intruded into the Late Cretaceous volcanics and volcanoclastics, and compositionally consist of syenite and minor quartz-syenite with mainly granular and rarely porphyric, poikilitic and perthitic textures. The studied plutons contain K-feldspar, plagioclase, quartz, clinopyroxene, biotite and minor hornblende, and Fe-Ti oxide, apatite, and zircon. Mineral thermobarometer estimations imply that the syenitic plutons were crystallized in P-T conditions representing mid to shallow crustal levels. Petrochemically, these syenitic plutons show I-type, metaluminous-peraluminous transitional (A/CNK = 0.85–1.04) and shoshonitic features. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon dating on the syenitic plutons yielded weighted mean ages of 78.5–72 Ma. Primitive mantle-normalized trace element patterns of the studied plutons are characterized by negative anomalies of Ba, Sr, Nb, Ta and Ti, and enrichment in Rb, Th, K, Ce and La. The chondrite-normalized rare earth element (REE) plots of the studied plutons show moderately enriched concave-shaped patterns (La N /Lu N = 10.3–10.7 for the Direkli pluton; La N /Lu N = 6.8–11.7 for the Yeniköy Tepe pluton) with negative Eu anomalies. The plutons have 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios (0.705368–0.706954), 143 Nd/ 144 Nd ratios (0.512600–0.512672), 206 Pb/ 204 Pb ratios (19.29–19.52) and 207 Pb/ 204 Pb ratios (15.65–15.67). The geochemical data, as well as regional geology, suggest that the Late Cretaceous syenitic plutons have formed in an extensional continental arc setting triggered by slab roll-back. The parental magma of syenitic plutons was derived from melts of lower crustal materials (metabasalt/metaandesite) and lithospheric mantle component.

- MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ1Forecasting of Turkey’s monthly electricity demand by seasonal artificial neural network
Hamzaçebi, Coşkun; Es, Hüseyin Avni; Çakmak, Recep
Electricity is one of the most important end-user energy types in today’s world and has an effective role in development of societies and economies. Stability of electricity supply is provided by matching of generated and consumed electricity amount during the all-day. So, electricity consumption forecasting is an essential issue for electric utilities. In this study, the monthly electricity demand of Turkey has been predicted. To model the effects of seasonality and trend, four different ANN models have been developed and selected the superior one. In addition, the selected ANN model has been compared with SARIMA model in order to increase the acceptability and reliability of the ANN model. The monthly electricity demand of Turkey has been predicted between 2015 and 2018 via the ANN model that can make successful and high-accuracy predictions according to the performance measures. The forecasting values will help in determining the medium-term and stable energy policies.

- MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ2A fuzzy logic embedded energy management software with multi-agent system for a stand-alone PV power plant
Ozden, T.; Kesler, S.; Okumus, H.I.
The worst scenario projected for an off-grid photovoltaic power system is the time interval that the solar irradiation amount is in short to supply the load throughout the day, and this situation is resulted in energy deficiency. Nowadays, an off-grid power generating system, which is designed to consider the worst scenario encountered only during a certain period of time, brings through big financial problems in terms of the initial installation costs. This study proposes a smart software to perform energy management considering users’ comfort and their criteria, which are taking some information from the agents communicating with the consumption units wirelessly and the battery agent. All loads and agents in this system are initially defined by the user according to the importance of the consumption loads such as critical, essential, significant, lesser, and insignificant loads. The proposed energy management software includes fuzzy logic-based decision maker to manage load suspension or put the suspended load into effect again according to the state of the sources. The total amount of consumption is kept less than the total existing energy so that the energy to be consumed by the critical loads is always provided. Considering the existing amount of energy and consumer preferences, the total amount of load units is maximized at each sampling step. The proposed system, which is attained without compromising the user comfort, enables more efficient energy consumption. Also, for supplying the critical loads in case of lack of energy is possible.

Vural, Alaaddin
The purpose of this study is to assess soil geochemical data of the Canca alteration area (Gümüşhane-Turkey) using statistical methods and investigate potential gold mineralizations of the area. With this purpose, 288 soil samples were collected and analyzed for gold and associated pathfinder elements. The concentrations ranged (Au and Hg: in μg/kg, others in mg/kg) between 0,68-19,20; 0,02-28,97; 2-314; 7-857; 2,1-394; 4-199,5; 0,59-49,29; 5-89; 0,04-37; 0,52-16,30; 1,25-91,9 for Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Bi, Mo, Sn and Hg respectively. According to Sperman’s rho correlation coefficients, although not very strong, correlation was observed between Cu and Au; Zn and Cu; Sb and Pb and As; Mo and Pb and As and Sb; Sn and As; Sb and Mo. The threshold values of the elements were obtained by median+2 the median absolute deviation. The prediction maps of the elements were formed by using the Inverse Distance Weighting and Kriging methods. According to prediction maps; especially in the western part of the study area and also related to tectonic lines, elemental enrichments, (gold and silver) were determined. Therefore, it is suggested to give importance to the west of the area in exploration drilling, geophysics, etc. Since the element prediction maps produced by the Inverse Distance Weighting method has higher resolution in anomaly contrast, it is suggested that maps produced with this method can preferably be used to give an idea at first sight in soil geochemistry studies.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ3Preliminary investigation of yoghurt enriched with hazelnut milk
Ilyasoğlu, H.; Yilmaz, F.
The present work aimed to investigate the use of hazelnut milk (HM) with dairy milk in the preparation of yoghurt. Cow milk (CM) mixed with HM (75:25, v/v) was used as the raw material for HM-enriched yoghurt (HMEY). The control sample was prepared with CM only. The proximate composition, physicochemical and sensorial properties, and fatty acid and sterol compositions were determined. The proximate composition of the HMEY samples was found to be compatible with dairy yoghurt. The HMEY samples were rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (mainly oleic acid), whereas the control sample had a higher level of saturated fatty acids. The HMEY samples had a lower cholesterol content than the control sample. They also contained phytosterols (mainly β-sitosterol). These findings reveal that HM might have a potential in yoghurt manufacturing, and that the use of HM might enhance the health benefits of yoghurt especially in sustaining cardiovascular health.

Comert, Resul; Matcı, Dilek Kucuk; Avdan, Ugur
It is very important to map the burned forest areas economically, quickly and with the high accuracy of issues such as damage assessment studies, fire risk analysis, and management of forest regeneration processes. Remote sensing methods give advantages such as fast, easy-to-use and high accuracy for burned area mapping. Recent years machine learning algorithms have become more popular in satellite image classification, due to the effective solutions for the analysis of complex datasets which have a large number of variables. In this study, the success of object based random forest algorithm was investigated for burned forest area mapping. For this purpose, Object based image analysis (OBIA) was performed using Landsat 8 image of the Adrasan and Kumluca fires which occurred in 24 – 27 June 2016. The study consisted of five steps. In the first step, the multi-resolution image segmentation was performed for obtaining image objects from Landsat 8 spectral bands. In the second step, the image object metrics such as spectral index and layer values were calculated for all image objects. In the third step, a random forest classifier model was developed. Then, the developed model applied to the test site for classification of the burned area. Finally, the obtained results evaluated with confusion matrix based on the randomly sampled points. According to the results, we obtained 0.089 commission error (CE) with 0.014 omission error (OE). An overall accuracy was obtained as 0.99. The results show that this approach is very useful to be used to determine burned forest areas.

Saricaoglu, Furkan T.; Atalar, Ilyas; Yilmaz, Volkan A.; Odabas, Halil I.; Gul, Osman
The effect of high pressure homogenization (HPH) on physical and bioactive properties of rosehip nectar was investigated. Rosehip nectar has a sedimentation problem while waiting on the market shelf during the sale, for solving this problem, nectars were passed 1, 2 and 3 times through 75, 100 and 125 MPa pressures. Mean particle size decreased as pressure and pass number increased (p < 0.05), whereas zeta potential did not change (p > 0.05). Microstructural images revealed that HPH treatment disrupted the cells and caused to release of cell materials to serum. HPH treatment increased the ΔE values (from 2.48 to 6.03). HPH treated samples showed no sedimentation during storage for 15 days. All samples showed shear thinning behavior and were characterized as weak gel network (G′ > G″). Total phenolic content and ascorbic acid results were decreased by HPH treatments due to increasing outlet temperatures of product, however, antioxidant capacity of nectars increased after treatment due to increasing total carotenoid content. This study indicated that HPH treatment could solve the sedimentation problem during shelf life with minimally affecting bioactive and physical properties of rosehip nectar.

Çelik, İlhan; Akben, Selahaddin Batuhan; Mazlum, Uğur
Waste neodymium–iron–boron (NdFeB)-doped silicon-based magnetic polymer composites are obtained by mixing the double-doped mixtures with a 70–30% ratio. In this study, composite materials were produced by adding NdFeB magnetic particles with sizes between 0–45, 45–63, 63–125, and over 125 (µm), and compression experiments were carried out to determine the mechanical properties of them. Experimental results were transformed into images and then analysed using image processing methods. According to the analysis of images representing the results of compression experiments, the strength values of NdFeB–RTV (vulcanized at room temperature) silicone rubber have increased by increasing the magnetic powder ratio. In addition, it was observed that there is a decrease in the elongation at break values due to weakening of polymer chain bonds. Considering the sensitivity of the successfully produced composite materials to the magnetic field, significant improvements in strength values were obtained. It is hoped that these results will lead to an increase in the recycling rate of waste magnets and will prevent environmental damage.

- MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ1An improved 0.8 V OC model based GMPPT technique for module level photovoltaic power optimizers
Basoglu, Mustafa Engin
Photovoltaic modules may experience some mismatching conditions that affect their available power capacity, causing inefficient maximum power point tracking (MPPT). Furthermore, their power-voltage (P-V) characteristic curve becomes a multi-peak structure in such conditions owing to the presence of bypass diodes included since every part of the modules may receive different solar irradiance. By taking into account these facts, this paper introduces an improved global MPPT technique comprising 0.8 V OC model and the limited and adaptive scan approach. The proposed technique eliminates the requirement of some threshold value, leading to unreliable operation which the classical 0.8 V OC model based studies suffer from. Furthermore, the tracking time has been reduced substantially with the proposed technique by limiting scanning interval. Performance of the proposed technique has been verified by experimental studies and compared with classical 0.8 V OC model and a full scanning technique, which have been already presented in the literature. Experimental results show that the proposed technique is simple to be implemented and it has better performance than classical 0.8 V OC model, full scanning, and perturb and observe algorithms. Therefore, the proposed technique is feasible and it can be used technically in module level distributed MPPT (DMPPT) applications.

In this study, the solutions of the random component time-fractional Klein-Gordon equation is obtained as approximately or exactly. The initial condition of this Klein-Gordon equation is studied by Gamma distribution. The fractional derivatives are defined in the Caputo sense. An example is shown to illustrate the influence of the solutions obtained by the new Sumudu transform iterative method (NSTIM). The expected value and variance of these solutions of this Klein-Gordon equation are obtained. The approximate analytical solution of this equation obtained by NSTIM and VIM are compared. NSTIM is applied to analyze the solution of this equation. Solution and figures are obtained by using MAPLE software. The formulas for the expected values and variances and results from the simulations of this Klein-Gordon equation are compared and the efficiency of this method is investigated.

Aliagas, Cristina; Mutlu, Tugba; Roy, L.; Boustany, J.; Grassian, E.; Mizrachi, D.; Špiranec, S.; Huotari, M.L.; Kurbanoglu, S.; Ünal, Y.
The aim of this paper is to present the data on secondary school teachers’ resistant attitudes towards integrating digital technologies and literacies into their classrooms. The data was gathered through qualitative interviews in the frame of two distinct one-to-one technology programs that took place in distant socio-cultural and educational contexts: the FATIH Project of Turkey and the Escuela 2.0/EduCAT1x1 of Catalonia/Spain. This comparative analysis shows that teachers mainly resist educational change and the government, although they slightly differ in the underlying assumptions supporting their resistance. Their discourses on technology in schools have settled into “discourses of uncertainty” where negative attitudes are compensated with slightly positive comments about digital artefacts and literacies as tools for learning. Findings also indicate that teachers, regardless of the educational context they work in, have assumed the “discourse of inevitability” that dominates viewpoints concerning technology and digital literacy in education.

- MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ1Jurassic acidic magmatism in a back-arc setting, eastern Sakarya Zone, Turkey: Geochemical constraints and an evolutionary model
Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Sünnetçi, Kadir
The Early Jurassic in the Sakarya Zone, Turkey, was dominated by basic magmatism. The products of this magmatic episode are found as basaltic lavas and pyroclastic rocks in the Şenköy Formation, which was deposited in an extensional basin, or as intrusives cutting Variscan crystalline basement rocks. The Olur (Erzurum) region in the easternmost part of the Sakarya Zone is one of the few locations where contemporaneous acidic rocks crop out, exposed in an area of ~50 km 2 . The acidic rocks in the eastern Sakarya Zone consist of dacitic lavas, rare pyroclastic rocks, and very rare pebble dikes. Porphyries and trondhjemites are their intrusive equivalents and crop out as dikes and small stocks within the underlying Variscan basement. These Early Jurassic rocks have modal K-feldspar contents of <10% and are trondhjemitic in character. Laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry U-Pb dating of zircons from two samples yielded formation ages for these rocks of 185.3 ± 1.0 and 184.1 ± 1.1 Ma (±2σ). Geochemically, the rocks are strongly peraluminous and display a medium- to low-K affinity and sodic compositions (K 2 O/Na 2 O = 0.03–0.49). Enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements and depletion in Nb, Ta, P, and Ti are regarded as signatures of a subduction-related setting. Moderately radiogenic I Sr ratios (0.70508–0.70877) and depleted mantle-like Ɛ Nd (t) values (−0.6 to +3.0) and Pb(t) isotopes suggest that the acidic rocks were derived from juvenile lower crust. Geochemical and isotope data imply that the partial melting of juvenile mafic lithologies of the lower crust produced K-poor tonalitic melts that later fractionated to trondhjemitic melts while ascending to the surface. Considering the available data, we suggest that the Early Jurassic bimodal magmatic rocks of the eastern Sakarya Zone were formed in a back-arc setting during the southward subduction of the Paleotethys oceanic lithosphere. These rocks are a prime example of the formation of shallow subduction products following Late Triassic ridge subduction.

Alemdag, Selcuk; Zeybek, Halil Ibrahim; Kulekci, Gokhan
The Akçakale Cave is located in the vicinity of the Arsa neighborhood within the boundaries of the Akçakale village, Gümüşhane, Turkey. The cave is rich in cave formations (stalactite, stalagmite, cave pearl, cave flower, wall travertines). Thus, the appropriateness of opening the cave to visitors to boost tourism is of importance for the local and national economy. This study analyzes the stability of the Akçakale Cave using a numerical analysis method. According to the results of the total displacement analysis, there are displacements in the entrance, ceiling, and sidewalls of the cave ranging from 1 mm to 48 mm. It seems that the entrance, ceiling, and sidewalls of the cave face a high risk of local or sudden collapse. According to the deformation analysis of the length section of the cave examined, local collapses may occur especially in the first 75 m from the entrance of the cave. We believe that this situation would not carry a risk for the Arsa neighborhood for now. In conclusion, the results of the stability analysis and in-situ observations showed clear evidence of former and ongoing cave-ins (collapses) and the Akçakale Cave faces a high risk of local or sudden collapse. Thus, although the Akçakale Cave is one of the most prominent karst caves in Turkey, it seems to be not appropriate to open the cave to tourist visits.

Although several studies have investigated the cytotoxic effects of different Dianthus species, there has been only limited research into the cytotoxic effect of Dianthus carmelitarum. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the phenolic characterization and the cytotoxic effect of D. carmelitarum on human colon cancer (WiDr) cells and the possible mechanisms involved. Total polyphenolic contents (TPC) and phenolic characterization of the extract were evaluated using the Folin-Cioceltau method and reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), respectively. The cytotoxic activity of the extract was determined using the methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The mechanism involved in the extract’s cytotoxic effect was then evaluated in terms of apoptosis and the cell cycle using flow cytometry, while mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) was investigated using the fluorometric method. The TPC value of the extract was 784.8 ± 40.3 mg gallic acid equivalent per 100 g sample, and sinapic acid and benzoic acid were detected as major phenolics in the extract. D. carmelitarum extract exhibited a selective cytotoxic effect (3.6-fold) on WiDr cells compared to normal colon cells. The extract induced cell cycle arrest at the S phase and apoptosis via reduced MMP in WiDr cells. Phytomedical and nutraceutical applications of D. carmelitarum may represent promising approaches in the treatment of cancer.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ2A fast GMPPT algorithm based on PV characteristic for partial shading conditions
Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin
Photovoltaic (PV) modules experience some partial shading conditions (PSC) due to some various factors. In that kind of a condition, a few maximum power points (MPPs) possibly appear on the power-voltage (P-V) curve, which increases the tracking difficulties. It is known that maximum power point tracking (MPPT) may not be realized by hill climbing (HC) based conventional MPPT algorithms under PSCs. In this context, this paper presents a novel micro converter based algorithm that was developed by using P-V characteristics of PV modules. Unlike voltage or duty ratio scanning techniques, this paper introduces a new deciding method to determine the correct global MPP (GMPP) region. For this, the proposed method uses some duty ratios that were calculated corresponding to each MPP region. Thus, the initialization of duty ratio is done properly, which results in high tracking speed and accurate tracking of the GMPP. The other advantages of the proposed algorithm are structural simplicity, less computational burden, and ease of implementation with a basic microcontroller. The simulation results show that this algorithm has fast tracking capability and it manages to track GMPP for PSCs correctly, since it includes an artificial scanning procedure. Single ended primary inductance converter (SEPIC) is built in order to validate the proposed global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) algorithm. The performance of the proposed GMPPT technique is verified by experimental studies. The results show that the proposed GMPPT technique is fast by up to five times than an adaptive full scanning strategy and improved IC algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can be commercially used in micro converters, since it is compatible with small number of bypass diodes in a module.

- MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ1Postcollisional transition from subduction- to intraplatetype magmatism in the eastern Sakarya zone, Turkey: Indicators of northern Neotethyan slab breakoff
Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Aydin, Faruk; Karsli, Orhan
Postcollisional magmatism in the eastern Sakarya zone was recorded by voluminous basic volcanism and repeated plutonism during the early Cenozoic. The temporal and geochemical evolution of these magmatic rocks is important for understanding the possible geodynamic history of the Sakarya zone. Here, we investigated three representative plutons lying between the towns of çamlihemşin (Rize) and Ispir (Erzurum), Turkey. These are largely composed of medium-K gabbroic diorites (Marselavat Pluton), shoshonitic monzonites (Güllübağ Pluton), and high-K granites (Ayder Pluton). We present whole-rock geochemistry, 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, and Sr, Nd, and Pb isotope analyses from the plutons to constrain the timing of variations in magmatism and source characteristics, and we provide a new approach to the proposed geodynamic models, which are still heavily debated. The 40Ar/39Ar geochronology reveals a cooling sequence from ca. 45 Ma for the Marselavat Pluton through ca. 41 Ma for the Güllübağ Pluton to ca. 40 Ma for the Ayder Pluton. Whole-rock geochemistry and Sr, Nd, Pb isotopes suggest that crustal contamination was not an important factor affecting magma compositions. Although there was no arc-related tectonic setting in the region during the middle Eocene, the Marselavat Pluton shows some subduction affinities, such as moderately negative Nb and Ta anomalies, and slightly positive Pb anomalies. These signatures were possibly inherited from a depleted mantle source that was modified by hydrous fluids released from the oceanic slab during Late Cretaceous subduction. Geochemical traces of the earlier subduction become uncertain in the Güllübağ samples. They display ocean-island basalt-like multi-element profiles and Nb/Ta, Ce/Pb, and La/Ba ratios. All these point to a mantle source in which earlier subduction signatures were hybridized by the addition of asthenospheric melts. Melting of calc-alkaline crustal material, probably emplaced during the first phase of middle Eocene magmatism (Marselavat), led to the formation of granitic plutonism (Ayder Pluton). Our data in conjunction with early Eocene adakite-like rocks show that melt generation, as in the given sequence, was most probably triggered by breakoff of the northern Neotethyan oceanic slab, ~13 m.y. after the early Maastrichtian collision between the Sakarya zone and Anatolide-Tauride block, and continued until the end of the middle Eocene. A shallow-marine transgression occurred contemporaneously with the middle Eocene magmatism throughout the Sakarya zone. An extension in this magnitude seems unlikely to be the result of orogenic collapse processes only. The main cause of this extension was most probably related to the northward subduction of the southern Neotethys Ocean beneath the Anatolide-Tauride block. The result is a volumetrically larger amount of middle Eocene magmatism than that expected in response to slab breakoff.

Karabıdak, Salih M.; Kaya, A.; Kaya, S.
Water; it is the basic necessity of living things that exist in the world like air and food. An adult person consumes an average of 2 L of water per day by drinking. This consumed water contains a number of radionuclides. For this reason, it is important to determine the effect of these radionuclides on human biological structure. In studies up to now, researchers calculate activity concentrations of radionuclides in drinking water and calculate annual equivalent doses based on these activity concentrations. However, it is always overlooked that this consumption is constant in calculations. This results in the inability of drinking water to fully determine the effect on human health. In this study, a new and comprehensive perspective was introduced in the gamma analysis of drinking water. This viewpoint includes the activity concentration, the annual equivalent dose, lifetime average annual dose, and lifetime cancer risk assessment depending on age groups. Thus, it is aimed that the radionuclides present in water can make more reliable calculations on affecting human health and water cleaning in terms of radiation. The proposed model was applied to some drinking water sources in Gümüşhane. We found out that the obtained values of annual effective dose equivalent in all samples do not exceed the WHO recommended levels. The risk of cumulative cancer at the end of the 70th year of a person using these drinking water sources has been about determined as 1 in 100,000. Positive correlations were obtained between 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K concentrations versus pH. In addition, a negative correlation was obtained 40K concentration with conductivity.
