Duran, Celal; Ozeken, Sengul Tugba; Camoglu, Aslihan Yilmaz; Ozdes, Duygu
Presence of hazardous dyes in water cause considerable risks to the human health and environment due to their potential toxicity and ecological disruptions. Therefore, in the present research, to suggest an alternative method for the retention of toxic Azocarmine G (ACG) dye from aqueous media, natural and H2SO4-modified acacia sawdust were performed for the first time as low-cost and efficient adsorbents. Based on batch experiments, it was determined that the best conditions for the developed dye retention process were an initial pH of 2.0 and an equilibrium time of 240 min. Analysis of the data using both pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic models showed that the retention of ACG onto the adsorbents predominantly occurred through chemical adsorption. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models were employed to provide insights into the interaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent and the mechanism of the adsorption process. Maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of natural and H2SO4-modified acacia sawdust were determined as 28.01 and 64.90 mg g-1, respectively by Langmuir isotherm model. Results of the study clearly indicated that the modification of acacia sawdust with H2SO4 leads to a substantial increase in the adsorption performance of anionic dyes.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ4A driver perspective-based investigation for lane line visibility of pavements on drivers’ lane utilization behaviors
Aydın, Metin Mutlu; Orhan, Eda
There have been significant advances in vehicle safety and road construction in all over the world and driver misbehaviours are still shown as one of the most important reasons of traffic accidents. When the current traffic accidents are examined, the negative effect of lane line quality and level of visibility related on the accidents comes to the forefront in underdeveloped and developing countries. In this study, the effect of lane line visibility level on drivers' lane utilization was investigated in detail. For this aim, a total of 17 different points in Türkiye were selected and the lateral positions of the vehicles on the road surface at these points were determined with the help of the screen scaling technique. In order to determine the level of lane line quality for an expert group and driver perspective, a face-to-face survey was conducted. From the analysis results, the lane line quality was determined low in urban and intercity roads, and the average maximum evaluation score was determined as 4.7 and the lowest score was determined as 1.42 where the best line quality was 5. This result showed that the level of lane line quality had significant differences at different points. Although, it was observed that the lateral position distributions in the examined points fit the normal distribution, the distribution of both the right/left wheels and their gravity center skewed to the right or left and deviated from the ideal conditions on road surfaces. It showed that the vehicles do not center the lanes exactly, but usually move close to the right or left edge of the lane. This situation also clearly revealed that the lane utilization disciplines of drivers are quite weak with the effect of the low lane line quality on road surfaces.

Ozturk, Kasif Furkan
Three-sided underpass culverts are structural systems used to provide passing vehicle or pedestrian. It is of great importance that such infrastructure systems remain useable, especially after disasters such as earthquakes that can cause great destruction, in order to ensure that infrastructure services can be maintained continuously. In this context, the aim of this study is to investigate using finite element method (FEM) the dynamic responses of three-sided underpass culvert system under near-fault ground motions with velocity pulse and far-fault ground motions. For this aim, the modal analysis of the soil-underpass culvert interaction system has been realized using proposed soil-structure interaction (SSI) model. The frequencies of the interaction system obtained from the finite element model developed using proposed approaches have been verified comparing with the results obtained from the literature and the site periods. After showing that the modes of the interaction system can be obtained with the help of the proposed numerical model, the full transient dynamic analyses have been performed in the time history using five near-fault and far-fault records, considering four different soil systems. The comparisons shows that the variations of the soil systems and the ground motion type can significantly affect the top peak relative displacements and the dynamic stresses of the three-sided underpass culvert.

Catal Reis, Hatice; Turk, Veysel
Early detection of plant diseases is critical to prevent disease spread and assist farmers. Thanks to their high discrimination ability, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based architectures can offer practical solutions in identifying different plant diseases. This study proposes a combined method to classify wheat plant diseases using the Integrated Deep Learning Framework (IDLF) and ensemble learning (EL) model. The proposed method uses pre-trained deep neural networks (ImageNet -based model (w/pre-training)). In addition, in the classification process, the performance of hybrid methods consisting of 13 deep learning architectures (DLA) trained from scratch, pre-trained DLA, deep, and-machine learning models were analyzed. Moreover, the use of hypercolumn, contrast stretching, and “Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE)” techniques are used to improve the image quality of the dataset. It is aimed to obtain a strong classification performance by combining these methods. In the experimental process, in the study using the original dataset, the RegNetY080 model trained from scratch had an accuracy value of 97.64%; in the study with the optimized dataset with CLAHE, an accuracy value of 98.33%; in the study performed with the CLAHE-improved dataset and transfer learning method, an accuracy value of 99.58% was obtained. An accuracy of 99.58% was achieved in the proposed hybrid study with the pre-trained RegNetY080 model and Random Forest (RF). The proposed method using IDLF and EL model provided 99.72% accuracy. When the proposed method was applied to the Wheat Leaf Dataset and Wheat Leaf Disease dataset, 97.56% accuracy was obtained for the Wheat Leaf Dataset and 99.43% for Wheat Leaf Disease. The results of this study can be helpful to experts and farmers in the detection of plant diseases.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ2An efficient Hartley–Ross type estimators of nonsensitive and sensitive variables using robust regression methods in sample surveys
Zaman, Tolga; Shazad, Usman; Yadav, Vinay Kumar
In sample surveys, the problem of outliers is one of the most frequent and widest, whose solution is required to be obtained using statistical techniques. To overcome this problem, various robust regression methods are being developed such as LTS, LMS, LAD, Huber-M, Hample-M, Tukey-M and Huber-MM methods. This article presents the modified Hartley–Ross type ratio estimators to estimate the population mean in sample surveys. The proposed design is taken into account under the two suppositions one is that the study variable is a non-sensitive variable, which means that measurements on it do not embarrass participants in personal interviews and other is the sensitive variable, which means that measurement errors are introduced as a result of a few dishonest responses. The use of scrambling response models helps to reduce these measurement errors to some extent. The proposed estimator is found to be more efficient than the existing classical estimators. A Numerical illustration was performed on a real data set in R-Program Software to support of our findings.

Başkan Takaoğlu, Zeynep
Energy is a concept frequently encountered both in daily life and in various disciplines. Despite such a wide range of scope, conceptualizing it might be challenging at times. This study aims to investigate high school students’ views on the concept of energy through a set of various paper-and-pencil tests. For this purpose, 654 high school students from the ninth, 10th, and 11th grades were asked to explain the concept of energy using definitions, drawings, and metaphors. According to the results, the students had similar misconceptions about their definitions, drawings, and metaphors. However, situations from everyday life were depicted, particularly in drawings and metaphors. Misconceptions decreased considerably in the upper classes, and answers were presented that were close to scientific knowledge, suggesting that, over time, students’ abstract thinking skills improve, the knowledge gained at school contributes to explaining the situations in daily life scientifically, and scientific facts are conceptualized.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Geophysical and numerical approaches to solving the mechanisms of landslides triggered by earthquakes: A case study of Kahramanmaraş (6 February, 2023)
Sari, Mahmut
Many landslides occurred in the 11 Turkish provinces affected by the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş in February 2023, and many people lost their lives due to those landslides. To reduce the risks and hazards brought on by landslides induced by earthquakes, it is essential to identify the mechanisms causing landslides to arise in such situations. In this study, the geological strength index and both seismic refraction tomography and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) geophysical methods were used to determine the failure mechanism of layered sedimentary units defined as flysch (claystone-siltstone-sandstone-marl). The shear strength reduction finite element method (SSR-FEM) was used with the RS2 computer program for model solutions. One of the geophysical methods, ERT, facilitated an interpretation of the cyclic failure mechanism that occurs in flysch, and it was found to be congruent with numerical models. Landslide slip circle depth, water-saturated layers, and resistivity values were determined with the ERT method. Seismic methods were employed to determine the velocity values (Vp, Vs) of the landslip mass. These velocity data, along with the elasticity modulus and Poisson ratios derived from them, were utilized in our numerical model. In the maximum shear strength and horizontal displacement analyses performed on the section line determined before the landslide, the natural state and the situation under the influence of groundwater were examined and the strength reduction factor (SRF) was determined as 1.35 and 1.24, respectively. In an evaluation conducted under the influence of the maximum horizontal ground acceleration (0.22 g) determined by taking into account the seismicity of the study area, it was concluded that instability occurred in the flysches and the SRF value was 0.72. An important finding of this study is that the results of geophysical methods used to determine the lithological properties of sedimentary rock masses and understand the causes of landslides align closely with those of numerical analysis methods, providing high accuracy. These methods also support new approaches, particularly in identifying landslip boundaries and detecting areas with high water saturation. It has been discovered that earthquakes actively contribute to the instability of these kinds of soils.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2The relationships between the multidimensional planned behavior model, green brand awareness, green marketing activities, and purchase intention
Baltaci, Duygu Çinar; Durmaz, Yakup; Baltaci, Furkan
Introduction: This study investigates the determinants impacting consumer purchasing behavior. Methods: Utilizing multidimensional planned behavior theory alongside measures of brand awareness and green brand awareness, this study examines the mediating role of multidimensional planned behavior theory. Empirical data were gathered through a survey conducted among Generation Z university students, yielding 638 responses. Analysis was performed on 590 valid responses. Results: Findings indicate that green marketing initiatives and green brand awareness positively influence consumers’ purchase intentions. Subdimensions of the theory of planned behavior (TPB), namely, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, serve to strengthen these relationships and mediate the interaction process. Conclusion: This study contributes novel insights to the burgeoning field of green marketing literature, offering a structural model for firms and policymakers. It suggests that companies can effectively engage in informal consumer education through green marketing efforts, thereby influencing consumers’ purchasing decisions via planned behavior. Moreover, such activities foster an increase in consumers’ green brand awareness, providing companies with an opportunity to promote conscious consumer behavior. The study's utilization of the TPB is both timely and original, particularly in its alignment with the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Gül, Abdulkadir; Tanyıldızı, Muhammet Şaban
Gluconic acid (GA) is widely used in the pharmaceutical, food, detergent, textile, leather, and concrete industries. However, cost-effective and high-yield production of GA remains a challenge. Due to currently high raw material inputs of GA, various alternative carbohydrate sources are being investigated. Sucrose is one of the cost-effective biomass sources that can be used as feedstock. The most common industrial production of GA is based on wild-type bacteria and fungi, but there are many problems with this production. This study aimed to optimize the production of GA from glucose produced by hydrolysis of sucrose using recombinant E. coli Waksman (W) pqq+ strain. After sucrose was enzymatically hydrolyzed, significant medium components for GA production were determined as glucose, calcium carbonate (CaCO3), peptone, and ammonium phosphate ((NH4)3PO4) using Placket-Burman Design (PBD). Detailed optimization of the medium components that are significant in GA production was carried out using central composite design (CCD), and optimum values of the independent variables examined in maximum GA production (93.5 ± 2.95 g/L) were determined as glucose 95, CaCO3 25, peptone 2, and (NH4)3PO4 1.13 (g/L). Using results obtained in the Erlenmeyer experiments, GA production in the bioreactor was investigated by CCD. The maximum GA efficiency (3.20 ± 0.15 g/L. h) was obtained under conditions where the air supply rate was 10.82 L/min, stirring speed was 656.87 rpm, and CaCO3 concentration was 16.90 g/L. In conclusion, it has been shown that GA can be produced with a high yield with this novel approach using a recombinant strain for GA production from sucrose.

Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla
Breast cancer patients may experience some health issues following surgery. Training patients about self-care plays a vital role in managing these symptoms. Mobile applications are a contemporary and appropriate approach to support patients about the potential symptoms following breast cancer surgery. This quasi-experimental study aimed to assess the impact of nurse-led support mobile application (NL-Mapp) delivered on breast cancer patients after surgery. Ninety participants were recruited, with 45 assigned to the intervention group and 45 to the control group. Subjects in the intervention group received NL-Mapp in addition to routine care, while those in the control group received only routine care over four weeks. The intervention included educational content on the postoperative period of breast cancer. Outcomes were assessed at baseline (M0), before discharge (M1), and one month after surgery (M2). The intervention group patients had significantly improved pain, affected shoulder functions, and anxiety owing to the effects of group, time, and group-time interaction. Body image and sexual adjustment were enhanced based on time and group-time interaction effects. During the follow-up period, experimental group patients experienced an improvement in body image and sexual adjustment, while those in the control group showed a decrease. This suggests that NL-Mapp may play a significant role in training breast cancer patients to manage their symptoms after surgery.

De, Prabal K.; Tümay, Muhammed
We investigate the role of additional years of schooling mandated by a compulsory schooling expansion law in affecting reproductive preferences and safe reproductive health behaviors in Turkey—a middle-to-high-income country with gender inequity in education but overall high levels of safe reproductive health practices at the time of passing the law. Using a fuzzy regression discontinuity design, we find that the additional schooling improved several health behaviors. However, the effects on some outcomes commonly analyzed in the existing literature, such as contraceptive use or fertility, were either weak or insignificant. Overall, our findings complement the current literature on the marginal health benefits of schooling expansion and suggest that policymakers consider the institutional and cultural factors while evaluating the scope and potential non-educational benefits of such expansions.
