Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır; Köse, Gülüstan; Göktekin, Zekiye
This study presents a methodology that adopts a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach to evaluate countries' performance in preventing industrial accidents, using accident records and combining three MCDA techniques (TOPSIS, Electre II, and CoCoSo) to create a robust ranking. Applied to OECD countries, the methodology provides valuable insights into countries' commitment to industrial accident prevention. It highlights the impact of European Union legislation, variations in the ranks of G7 economies, and identifies role models like Spain and Italy while shedding light on the neglect of regulations in developing countries like Hungary and Turkey. In a world where industrial accidents have far-reaching consequences, this study emphasizes the importance of sincerity and dedication in accident prevention efforts.
- MakaleYalnız künye2024Influence of post processing on the mechanical properties and wear behavior of selective laser melted Co-Cr-Mo-W alloys
Varol, Temel; Aksa, Hüseyin Can; Yıldız, Fatih; Akçay, Serhatcan Berk; Kaya, Gürkan; Beder, Murat
In the study, the effect of laser energy density and post-processes (sintering, cold rolling, and hot rolling) on the properties of Co-Cr-Mo-W alloys fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) are investigated. The samples are fabricated at 83, 125, and 167 J/mm3 of laser energy density to compare their properties. XRD results show that the samples in which ε-Co martensitic phase dominates γ-Co phase are the samples exposed to hot rolling. The highest hardness values obtained with the hot rolling applied after SLM. The hardness for SLM1hr, SLM2hr and SLM3hr is 489.2, 500.4 and 509.8 HV, respectively. The lowest wear rate values are also obtained after the hot rolling post-process, where the highest hardness values and lowest average COFs were obtained.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Effect of PGV/PGA ratio on seismic-induced vibrations of structures equipped with parallel tuned mass dampers considering SSI
Araz, Onur
Tuned mass damper is one of the effective methods used to reduce dynamic loads in structures under the influence of environmental loads such as earthquakes, wind, and traffic loads. In the current TMD design, the fixed base approach is mostly considered when determining the dynamic properties of the structure. However, in cases where the structure-soil interaction (SSI) is important, the frequency values of the structure are significantly different from those obtained for the fixed foundation approach. This situation negatively affects the performance of TMD operating in a narrow frequency range. Therefore, using a control system consisting of multiple TMDs connected in parallel (MTMD) instead of a single TMD may be a promising solution for the control of structural vibrations. In this study, a parameter design and efficiency assessment of MTMD for reducing the seismic responses of the structure considering SSI is studied. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is adopted to obtain the optimum parameters (i.e., damping ratio, frequency ratio, and frequency bandwidth) of the MTMD. The effects of different support conditions, number of TMD units, and peak ground velocity (PGV) / peak ground acceleration (PGA) ratio on the performance of MTMD are also evaluated comprehensively. The dynamic responses of the structure are obtained under 42 near -fault ground motions from the time history analysis. The results reveal that ground motions with low PGV/PGA ratio can significantly increase the responses of the structure for both with and without SSI cases. Moreover, it has been observed that optimized TMDs placed parallel to the top floor of the structure are effective in reducing the seismic responses of a ten-story building considering SSI.
- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2024Potato leaf disease detection with a novel deep learning model based on depthwise separable convolution and transformer networks
Catal Reis, Hatice; Turk, Veysel
Early diagnosis of plant diseases is essential in reducing economic losses for farmers and increasing production efficiency. Therefore, Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems supported by artificial intelligence technologies can be developed to help diagnose diseases quickly and accurately by examining the symptoms and signs in plant leaves. In this study, Multi-head Attention Mechanism Depthwise Separable Convolution Inception Reduction Network (MDSCIRNet) architecture, an image-based deep convolutional neural network, is proposed for classifying potato leaf diseases. The main components of the MDSCIRNet architecture are depthwise separable convolution (DSC) and a multi-head attention mechanism. The proposed architecture has been compared with modern algorithms developed with DSC technology, such as Xception, MobileNet, and deep learning algorithms, such as ResNet101, InceptionV3, and EfficientNetB2, to evaluate its performance in the classification process. In addition, hybrid methods developed with the classical machine learning algorithms Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), and MDSCIRNet model, integrated deep learning model, hard voting ensemble learning model. Suggested methods such as these were also used in the experimental process. Moreover, techniques such as Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE), Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Networks (ESRGAN), and Hypercolumn were used to improve the image quality of the data set. In the experimental process, the MDSCIRNet deep learning architecture achieved 99.24% accuracy in the study using the original dataset. While a 99.11% accuracy rate was achieved with the integrated deep learning model and hard voting ensemble learning model, the highest success rate of 99.33% was performed in the study conducted with the MDSCIRNet + SVM method. This study contributes to developing new and effective strategies in the agricultural industry for the early diagnosis and control of potato plant diseases. Machine learning-based approaches offer the potential to minimize economic losses and increase productivity in production by allowing farmers to intervene early.
- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2024Public's social media use during the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes on 6 February 2023
Mızrak, Sefa
Social media facilitates crisis management and emergency response efforts by disseminating disaster information during disasters. Understanding the positive and negative contributions of social media to disaster management after devastating disasters will make social media more effective and efficient for crisis management in the future. The objective of this study was to investigate the public's social media use in the 15-day period after the earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, in Türkiye. The study was designed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The data were collected from 1698 people residing in Türkiye via a survey method and analyzed via descriptive, ordinal logistic regression, and thematic analysis. The thoughts of 245 participants regarding social media use were analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that social media was employed as a powerful resource for sharing information after the earthquakes. The participants used Instagram the most and followed the social media accounts of the institutions the most. Posting the physical and psychological damage of earthquakes and humanitarian aid negatively affected the participants and caused them to think that social media was useless. Due to the information shared by social media phenomena and nongovernmental organizations, the participants stated that social media was useful after the earthquakes. For people to share posts that will contribute to search and rescue, aid and damage assessment on reliable and high-follower social media accounts, disaster managers, scientists and policy makers should understand communities' usage intentions, satisfaction and criticism regarding social media accounts and platforms during previous disasters.

In the present study, a prediction model was created to predict the impact of B4C content, milling time and matrix size on the hardness and density of AA2024-B4C nanocomposites produced by means of flake powder metallurgy. The process involved synthesizing AA2024-B4C nanocomposite powders by mechanical milling followed by preparing nanocomposites by hot pressing. The matrix size of the AA2024 alloy powders, the milling time, and the B4C content were selected as the input parameters. On the other hand, the density and the hardness of the AA2024-B4C nanocomposites were designed as the output parameters. The results showed that the sintered density is significantly improved by decreasing matrix size. It was found that density of AA2024–3 wt%B4C nanocomposites is lower than AA2024–1 wt%B4C nanocomposites. However, the hardness of AA2024–3 wt%B4C nanocomposites is better than AA2024–1 wt%B4C nanocomposites. The AA2024-B4C nanocomposite prediction model could predict hardness and density with a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.32% and 1.38%. The results show that the ANN model is a useful tool for the matrix size effect prediction, milling time and B4C content on the density and hardness of AA2024-B4C nanocomposites prepared by flake powder metallurgy.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024In-plane crushing behavior and energy absorption of CFRP honeycombs with different core topologies
Pehlivan, Levent; Baykasoğlu, Cengiz
The in-plane crushing behavior and energy absorption performance of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) honeycombs with different core topologies were experimentally investigated under uniaxial loading conditions. Three types of CFRP honeycomb core topologies (i.e. circular, square and hexagonal) with different cell wall thicknesses and heights were considered in the designs. The honeycomb samples were fabricated by the molding and bonding process, which is widely used in the easy, fast and economical manufacturing of thin-walled honeycomb structures. A total of twenty-seven sample groups were experimentally tested for each loading condition, in which honeycomb samples with different core topologies were designed to have almost the same weights for a meaningful comparison. The experimental results revealed that all honeycomb designs have higher in-plane compression strength in the expansion direction, and hexagonal honeycombs showed the highest strength and energy absorption performance in both directions due to their stable load-carrying capacity and outstanding force efficiency. In particular, the experimental findings showed that the crushing strength and the specific energy absorption of CFRP honeycomb structures can be improved up to 6.1 and 4.2 times, respectively, by properly adjusting the cell wall thickness and height parameters. The results also revealed that the proposed lightweight CFRP honeycombs with the structural densities of 155–283 kg/m3 showed better in-plane crushing performance than many competing cellular topologies.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Enhancing the performance of parabolic trough solar collectors: Cost-effective innovative designs for sustainable energy harvesting
Karaağaç, Mehmet Onur; Akıncı, Burak; Ergün, Alper
This study aims to improve the performance and stability of parabolic trough solar collectors (PTSC), especially those with heat storage capacity. Three different receiver tube designs have been meticulously developed to achieve this goal. As a result of the research, the Black surface (BS) -PTSC and PTSC- Paraffin wax (PW) systems achieved 26.5% and 56.8% more thermal energy flow, respectively, compared to the conventional PTSC. In addition, while the average thermal efficiencies of the PTSC, BS-PTSC, and PTSC-PW systems were found to be 11.2%, 14.1%, and 16.9%, respectively, the average exergy efficiencies of the PTSC, BS-PTSC, and PTSC-PW were 1.4%, 1.9%, and 2.3%. Painting the black copper pipe and filling the receiver tube with paraffin wax PCM increased thermal and exergy efficiency. Besides, comparing the temperature differences based on the PTSC system, it was found that BS-PTSC and PTSC-PW systems have 12.3% and 16.4% higher tank temperatures, respectively. The findings of this research have demonstrated the potential of parabolic trough solar collectors equipped with heat storage. It has also increased the sustainability index in terms of sustainability and reduced CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Furthermore, it has been shown that these simple and inexpensive designs, without significant modifications to the system, can achieve high thermal performance without unnecessary expensive components.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Accuracy assessment of UAV-based documentation of archaeological site: Kültepe-Kaneš
Günen, Mehmet Akif; Kulakoğlu, Fikri; Besdok, Erkan
High quality 2D/3D metric documentation of archaeological sites is used in many different applications such as archaeological-heritage management, digital archaeological excavation planning, orthophotographic documentation, and ancient Digital Surfaces Models (DSM) research. Structure-from-Motion based photogrammetry (SfM) is an indirect geodesic measurement technique based on multiple view image processing using high-level automation techniques. Using SfM to generate the high accuracy 2D/3D data needed for digital documentation of archaeological cultural heritage is relatively practical, economical, and fast. Factors such as the number of ground control points and their distribution to the study area, the robustness of the camera system model parameters, and the analytical model of the photogrammetric triangulation method used affect the accuracy of the data produced using SfM-photogrammetry. Kültepe-Kaneš, the center of the ancient Kingdom of Kaneš, which is located in central-Anatolia, was an Assyrian Trade Colony active between ca. 2000 BC and 1700 BC. The site, which was the center of the Old Assyrian trade colonies in Anatolia and one of the most important sites in ancient history, has been under excavation for the last 75 years. In this paper, high accuracy digital documentation of the Kültepe-Kaneš archaeological excavation area was made using different SfM methods. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference in accuracy between Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) and Post-Process Kinematic (PPK) methods for the study area. This suggests that either PPK, RTK, or aerial triangulation with Ground Control Points (GCPs) can be employed to generate orthophotos and DSMs for archaeological sites with relatively flat surface areas, as long as a sufficient number of uniformly distributed GCPs are used.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Performance of differently arranged double-tuned mass dampers for structural seismic response control including soil-structure interaction
Araz, Onur; Elias, Said
Reducing vibrations occurring in structures under environmental loads makes a significant contribution to the development of structural safety. Tuned mass dampers (TMD) are one of the systems commonly used to control structural vibrations. Since TMD is adjusted according to the dominant frequency of the structure, factors that may cause changes in the frequency of the structure can significantly reduce the effectiveness of TMD. One of the main factors that can cause changes in the frequency values of the structure is the interaction between the structure and the soil. To overcome this situation, it is recommended to apply control systems consisting of multiple TMDs (MTMD) to the main structure instead of a single TMD. MTMD systems are arranged in two different types, serial and parallel. In this paper, a methodology that considers the structure-soil interaction (SSI) is presented for the optimum design of control systems with different configurations placed on a main structure under the influence of ground motion. To research the SSI effects, the TMDs-structure coupled system is supported by rocking and swaying springs and the corresponding dashpots, and then the equations of motions of the structural system are derived. In the optimization process based on particle swarm optimization in the frequency domain, different soil types, configuration types, and mass ratios are considered. The efficiency of optimum TMDs arranged in series and parallel is also evaluated using near and far fault ground motions in the time domain. Numerical results show that if structures are constructed on soils with low shear wave velocities, ignoring SSI can significantly change the design parameters and effectiveness of the control system.
- MakaleYalnız künye2024Axial resistance of elliptical hollow section K-joints made of high strength steel
Ozyurt, E.
The present study examined the axial resistance of welded elliptical hollow section (EHS) K-joints made of high-strength steel (HSS). The axial resistance of EHS K-joints was affected by a range of factors, including the geometrical parameters, orientations, chord pre-stress levels, and the mechanical properties of the high-strength steel grades. This research aimed to investigate the performance of welded EHS K-joints made of HSS under axial loading conditions with or without chord pre-stresses. Finite element analysis was employed for numerical simulations to analyze the nonlinear behaviour of EHS K-joints with HSS. It was observed from the numerical results that the orientation types significantly affected normalised resistance ratios. In contrast, β, γ, θ, and chord pre-stress levels had minimal impact, as comparisons were based on normalised resistance ratios. However, non-dimensional geometric parameters and chord pre-stress levels notably influenced the axial joint resistance of the HSS K-joints. As for predicting the axial resistances of EHS K-joints with HSS, the numerical results indicated that the existing reduction factor might be unsafe for the equivalent RHS method to be applied in the current design guides. Therefore, a new reduction factor was proposed for EHS K-joints with HSS that yield unsafe results.
- MakaleYalnız künye2024Availability of sedimentary and volcanic rock deposits on Northeastern Turkey as concrete aggregates
Çavdar, Ahmet; Çavdar, Özlem
Turkey has large aggregate deposits; however, these deposits cannot be used effectively due to a lack of controls. This can lead to fatal errors, as in the 6 February 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes. The main motivation of this study is to investigate the availability of existing and new aggregate deposits as concrete aggregates in northeastern Turkey. Thus, the quality of aggregates in this region will be studied comparatively. This research was carried out with aggregate samples taken from 30 different rock quarries in 10 different provinces in this region of Turkey. First, the locations of 30 crushed rock aggregates were identified, and their petrographic, mineralogical, physical, geometric and durability properties were determined. Fifteen different test procedures were applied to 30 crushed rock samples. It was concluded that these rocks are generally sedimentary rock types and that 18 of these 30 samples are of limestone origin. To obtain high-strength concrete, in addition to quality cement, the aggregates used must also be of high quality. The use of aggregate resources mentioned in this study for building concrete will contribute to the production of high-strength concrete. These samples, which generally have sufficient physical, mechanical and durability properties, meet the limitations of the standards much better than concrete aggregates. High-statistical-performance regression equations were obtained for the physical and durability properties.
- MakaleYalnız künye2023Seismic-induced vibration control of a multi-story building with double tuned mass dampers considering soil-structure interaction
Araz, Onur; Elias, Said; Kablan, Feyza
This paper presents a methodology for the optimization of double tuned mass dampers (TMDs) positioned on the top floor of a multi-story building subjected to ground motions considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). In the optimization process, it is considered that double TMDs are connected both in series and in parallel. STMD and PTMD are used to denote the series TMDs and parallel TMDs, respectively. The equations of motion for an n-story shear building controlled by STMD and PTMD are derived by considering the SSI effect and the optimum parameters of both devices are obtained by minimizing the amplitude of the displacement transfer function for the top floor of the building in the frequency domain analysis. The effectiveness of the PTMD and STMD designed using the Jaya algorithm (JA) is verified by numerical examples of a ten-story shear building under twelve earthquake records with different frequency content and the comparison with the traditional TMD is also performed. In order to investigate the effect of earthquake frequency content on the control performance of the TMDs, earthquakes considered are divided into three different groups as low, intermediate, and high-frequency contents. In addition, the influence of the soil stiffness on the optimum parameters and effectiveness of the PTMD and STMD is discussed. Numerical results show that the optimally designed PTMD and STMD effectively suppressed the maximum floor displacements and accelerations of the building. It is also shown that SSI effects can be ignored when the building is built on stiff soil. In addition, it is concluded that the SSI and earthquake frequency content have a significant effect on the control performance of TMDs and the seismic response of the building.
- MakaleYalnız künye2023Do earthquake survivors want to escape the threats of earthquakes and why?
Özdemir, Ahmet; Mızrak, Sefa
Destructive earthquakes and the possibility of experiencing destructive earthquakes may cause people to move from their area to safer ones. However, despite high earthquake risk, people may not want to leave the area they reside for various reasons. The objective of this study was to investigate whether earthquake experience, earthquake insurance, satisfaction with city, self-efficacy, risk perception, social support, post-earthquake insecurity and price gouging was correlated with relocation willingness in an earthquake-prone area. Data were collected using a survey from 1114 people residing in Kocaeli (Türkiye), where a devastating earthquake occurred in 1999. 610 people who participated in the study were affected by this earthquake and 504 people were not affected. In order to better understand the impact of earthquake exposure on relocation willingness, ordinal logistic regression analyzes were performed separately for the earthquake affected and unaffected sample. The result showed that the relocation willingness of the unaffected participants was higher than the relocation willingness of the affected participants. People who were psychologically affected by the earthquake were more likely to relocate. Satisfaction with the city reduced the participants' relocation willingness mostly. The fear of earthquakes and perceived insecurity after a future earthquake increased all participants' relocation willingness. It is hoped that this study will guide scientists and disaster managers working in regions where destructive disasters may occur to improve strategies related to relocation policy and earthquake risk reduction.

Nowadays, innovative methods have been used for observing and structural evaluating of historical structures. In this paper, it is presented the full-scale structural assessments of a minaret after a Finite Element model calibrating according to vibration test results. Also, the structural behaviours under earthquake and wind loads were identified by considering the environmental effects on the selected masonry minaret of İskenderpaşa Mosque. First of all, modal analysis was executed on the three-dimensional Finite Element model created according to field survey in ANSYS Workbench. In-situ vibration tests were implemented at different intervals by using developed vibration measurement system. The experimental modal parameters were attained from collected signals. The experimental results were used as reference values in model calibration of this minaret to reflect the existing structural behaviour. Model calibration process was carried out on the initial model both by changing of material properties of masonry wall and by taking into account the interactions with mosque walls and ground. Full-scale structural evaluation was carried out under earthquake and wind loads on both the initial and the calibrated models in the weak direction of this minaret. The top displacements, drift ratios, principal stress values and their distributions were determined. It was shown that the analyses on the calibrated model produce more realistic structural behaviour.
- MakaleYalnız künye2023Investigation of used PCM-integrated into building exterior walls for energy savings and optimization of PCM melting temperatures
Terhan, Meryem; Ilgar, Gamze
In the study, the effects on the building's thermal energy performance of using two different phase change materials (PCMs) integrated into the exterior walls at various thicknesses and melting temperatures have been investigated. Four exterior wall types have been designed by changing the position of PCM integrated into the exterior wall for the purpose to decrease heating and cooling energy demand. For each wall type, three different thicknesses (layers) have been studied and energy savings that PCM provided by decreasing the heating and cooling energy demands have been calculated on a monthly and annual basis. According to the energy simulation analyses, the configuration provided the highest heating energy savings (21.32 %) on an annual basis is the three-layer BioPCM27 integrated exterior wall with a melting temperature of 21 °C. The monthly optimum melting temperatures of PCMs have been determined based on the charge and discharge processes of PCM integrated into the exterior walls by evaluating the results of hourly energy simulation analysis. The annual average optimum melting temperature varies between 18 and 19 °C, depending on the exterior wall and material types. The three-layer (3L) InfiniteRPCM21C configuration (Type 3) has the best thermal energy performance among all exterior wall types, with 24.45 % total energy savings in the cooling season and 14.76 % in the heating season.
- MakaleYalnız künye2023Effect of foundation embedment ratio in suppressing seismic-induced vibrations using optimum tuned mass damper
Araz, Onur; Cakir, Tufan; Ozturk, Kasif Furkan; Kaya, Dilek
Tuned mass damper (TMD), which is used in structures to mitigate the dynamic responses caused by environmental loads, is tuned according to the dominant frequency of the structures. The dominant frequency of structure built on soil with low stiffness is significantly affected by the soil-structure interaction (SSI). In previous studies, only the surface foundation case is considered to investigate the design parameters of TMD considering SSI effects and the embedment depth of the foundation is neglected in these studies. Thus, this paper investigates the optimization of TMD for mitigation of responses of a high-rise building considering various depths of embedment and soil properties. The optimum parameters of TMD are investigated using five different optimization algorithms (i.e., simulated annealing, sequential quadratic programming, genetic algorithm, pattern search, and particle swarm optimization). The objective function minimizes the peak acceleration amplitude at the top of the structure. The effectiveness of optimum TMD is verified to use 20 near-fault pulse-like ground motions. The comparisons show that the embedment ratio of the foundation and the soil properties significantly affect the optimization of TMD.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Multi-criteria evaluation of medical waste management process under intuitionistic fuzzy environment: A case study on hospitals in Turkey
Çelik, Sefa; Peker, İskender; Gök-Kısa, A. Cansu; Büyüközkan, Gülçin
Waste management has come to the fore in the whole world with the increasing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic along with concerns about human health, environmental threats, and socio-economic factors, etc. Medical waste is one of the waste types that need special management processes including particularly collection, storage, separation, and disposal. Healthcare activities create a great amount of medical waste deriving from the hospitals. This study aims to determine the hospital that carries out medical waste management in the most effective way in Erzurum, Turkey. To handle intense uncertainty in the evaluation process, the case is analyzed by Intuitionistic Fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (IFMCDM) methods. The present study contributes to the literature by focusing on a real case problem under IF environment in a Group Decision-Making (GDM) framework. Additionally, based on the literature review and expert judgments, the evaluation criteria relevant to the case are defined in this paper. To this end, a four-phased integrated methodology that involves Intuitionistic Fuzzy Weighted Averaging (IFWA), IF Analytical Hierarchy Process (IFAHP), IF Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (IFTOPSIS) and One-Dimensional Sensitivity Analysis, is conducted. Firstly, IFWA is aimed to express the significance levels of decision makers (DMs) based on their knowledge, qualifications and experiences. Secondly, IFAHP is used to calculate the importance weights of the decision criteria and IFTOPSIS is preferred to rank the available hospitals. Then, sensitivity analysis is employed to display robustness. According to the results, the most important criteria are Qualified personnel, Health institution infrastructure, and Control of waste, respectively and the most efficient hospital is determined.
- MakaleYalnız künye2023Increased heat tolerance and transcriptome analysis of Salmonella enterica Enteritidis PT 30 heat-shocked at 42 ℃
Qiu, Yan; Ozturk, Samet; Cui, Xinyao; Qin, Wen; Wu, Qingping; Liu, Shuxiang
In this study, we compared the heat tolerance parameter (D65℃) values of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis PT 30 (S. Enteritidis ) heat adapted at different degrees (at 42 ℃ for 20–180 min) and cultivated using two methods. The treated group with the highest D65℃ value (LP-42 ℃-60 min) and the untreated groups (Control-TSB and Control-TSA) were subjected to transcriptome analysis. Heat-adaptation increased the D65℃ values of S. Enteritidis by 24.5–60.8%. The D65℃ values of the LP-42 ℃-60 min group (1.85 ± 0.13 min, 7.7% higher) was comparable to that of the Control-TSA. A total of 483 up- and 443 downregulated genes of S. enteritidis were identified in the LP-42 ℃-60 min group (log2fold change > 1, adjusted p-value < 0.05). Among these genes, 5 co-expressed and 15 differentially expressed genes in the LP-42 ℃-60 min and Control-TSA grops possibly contributed to the high D65℃ values of S. Enteritidis. The Rpo regulon was involved in the heat adaptation of S. Enteritidis, as evidenced by the significant upregulation of rpoS, rpoN, and rpoE. KEGG enrichment pathways, such as biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, tricarboxylic acid, and ribosomes were identified and mapped to reveal the molecular mechanisms of S. enteritidis during heat adaptation. This study quantified the enhanced heat tolerance of S. Enteritidis heat adapted at different degrees of heat-adaptation. The results of this study may serve as a basis for elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying the enhanced heat tolerance at the transcriptome level.
- MakaleYalnız künye2023Behaviors of a group of university students during an earthquake drill and their compliance with the emergency disaster plan: An action research
Parlak, Lütfiye; Kaya, Nahsan; Duru, Pınar; Örsal, Özlem
Approximately 60% of the casualties due to disasters occur due to earthquakes. This study aimed to discover and develop the strengths and weaknesses of a group of university students during a possible earthquake, their behavior towards evacuation and assembly areas, and their adaptation to the emergency disaster plan. The research was carried out between May–June 2022 as “liberating/developing/critical action research,” a subtype of action research, one of the qualitative research methods. Thirty-five students participated in the first drill, and 31 participated in the second. The study data were collected through “observations” made with the installed cameras and “focus group interviews” with the students through semi-structured interview forms. An average of 3.25 behaviors expected to be observed were displayed as expected by the students during the first drill. The average of the behaviors displayed during the second drill increased to 5.18. As a result of the synthesis of the qualitative data obtained from the focus group interviews, it was seen that two main themes were formed: “Drill management” and “Disaster experience.” The main theme of drill management was “Drill moment,” “Evacuation moment,” and “Drill experience” analytical themes. In contrast, the main theme of disaster experience was “Disaster cycle,” “Disaster perception,” “Disaster awareness,” and “Earthquake experience.” After the second drill, it was evaluated that the problems identified in the first were eliminated. The students' adaptation to the emergency disaster plan increased by re-applying to the observation and focus group interviews.
