Özcan, Kadriye; Acet, Tuba; Çorbacı, Cengiz

Centaurea hypoleuca is one of the plants have been traditionally used in treatments of many diseases in folk medicine in Turkey. In the present study, ethanol, methanol, and ethyl acetate extracts of the plant's aerial parts were examined and their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzyme inhibition activities were determined for the first time. The antioxidant assays were performed in vitro using ABTS and DPPH methods, whereas the antimicrobial efficiency was determined using disc diffusion and microdilution methods. Moreover, the enzyme inhibition activity was analyzed using calorimetric methods targeting the key enzymes used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (cholinesterase) and diabetes (glucosidase and amylase). Also, the phenolic contents were analyzed using HPLC. The biological activity of flower ethyl acetate extract was found to be significantly higher than those of other extracts. This extract was more prominent because of its strong antimicrobial activity with the MIC value of 8 µg mL−1 against MRSA. Moreover, the main components of the extract were determined to be catechin and chlorogenic acid. In conclusion, these results indicate that C. hypoleuca can be pharmaceutically used as herbal remedies for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzyme inhibitor effects.

Ohmic heating assisted hydrodistillation of clove essential oil

    Tunç, Merve Tuğçe; Koca, İlkay

Ohmic heating assisted hydrodistillation is a novel green technology for the extraction of essential oils. In this study, clove bud essential oils (CEO) were extracted by ohmic heating assisted hydrodistillation (OAHD) and compared with conventional hydrodistillation (HD) process, in terms of extraction yield, energy consumption and chemical properties. Ohmic heating assisted hydrodistillation process conditions were optimized by response surface methodology. Voltage gradient (7.5–12.5 V/cm, A), process time (30–120 minutes, B) and mass of clove bud (20–40 g, C) were varied in order to maximize CEO yield and to minimize energy consumption. Optimized extraction conditions were determined as, 12.5 V/cm voltage gradient, 97.967 min for process time and 40 g of mass of clove bud. Yield of CEO and energy consumption were found 13.18 ± 1.50% and 0.214 ± 0.030 kW h/g CEO at optimum extraction conditions, respectively. Under optimum conditions, both OAHD and HD methods were used for CEO extraction. Yields of CEO obtained by OAHD, HD-D (distilled water) and HD-S (salted water) were 13.18 ± 1.50, 8.23 ± 0.35 and 7.88 ± 0.60 respectively. Energy consumptions of OAHD and HD methods were not significantly different (P > 0.05). The main chemical component of CEO was eugenol and the yield of eugenol (g/100 g clove bud) was found higher with OAHD (6.95±0.6) method than HD-D (5.16 ± 0.20) and HD-S (5.13 ± 0.28). Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of CEOs were investigated by FRAP, DPPH and disk diffusion method. Antioxidant properties of CEOs obtained by different extraction methods were not significantly different (P > 0.05) according to FRAP and DPPH analysis. Although inhibition zones of CEOs extracted with different methods were not significantly different (P > 0.05) for gram positive bacteria's, CEO obtained by OAHD and HD-D have significantly higher (P < 0.05) inhibition zones for K. pneumonia and E. coli, respectively. The results of this study showed that OAHD method is applicable for CEO production.

Mapping of shallow landslides with object-based image analysis from unmanned aerial vehicle data

Comert, Resul; Avdan, Ugur; Gorum, Tolga; Nefeslioglu, Hakan A.

The Black Sea Region of Turkey is one of the most landslide prone areas due to its high slope topography, heavy rainfall, and highly weathered hillslope material conditions. Preparation of landslide inventory maps is the first step in producing landslide susceptibility maps. Ground-based methods for mapping landslide occurrences are time-consuming and expensive. Additionally, landslide mapping based on satellite imageries and aerial photographs has some limitations, including climatic conditions, cost, and limited repetitive measurement capacity. Visual interpretation-based landslide mapping, which is based on satellite imageries and aerial photographs, is a time-consuming procedure that requires an experience-based expert opinion. Therefore, the data acquisition based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and landslide event inventory maps using an object-based classification approach can be superior to other methods in terms of speed and cost. In this study, we developed a semiautomatic model using object-based image analyses for rapid mapping of shallow landslides from the data obtained from UAVs after major landslide events in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. For this purpose, two test sites—Kurucasile (Bartin) and Cayeli (Rize)—were selected. Landslide mapping models were developed in the investigation sites, and the performance of the models was evaluated. The landslides' data obtained with the developed models were compared to the landslides' data produced by the experts. The comparison process revealed that landslides mapped by using UAV data have an accuracy rate higher than 86% according to the number of landslides and 83% according to the landslide area.

Performance evaluation of ejector with different secondary flow directions and geometric properties for solid oxide fuel cell applications

Genc, Omer; Timurkutluk, Bora; Toros, Serkan

The mixing chamber length, secondary flow tube inclination angle, diffuser length and diverging angle as well as the direction of secondary flow on the ejector performance are numerically studied. The numerical results of 2560 different design points including the all combinations of the selected parameters indicate that the selected ejector geometric parameters have a great impact on the ejector performance. Within the parameter ranges considered, the best performance based on steam to carbon ratio and the entrainment is obtained from the ejector having a mixing chamber length of 30 mm, secondary flow tube inclination angle of 45°, diffuser length of 90 mm and diffuser diverging angle of 5°, regardless of the secondary flow direction. On the other hand, the parallel flow ejector, where the anode exhaust line flow direction is designed to be parallel to the primary flow direction, is found to exhibit slightly higher steam to carbon ratio and entrainment ratio compared to those of the counter flow ejector. Furthermore, it is seen that the parallel flow ejector can offer wider ranges of the ejector geometric parameters considered for a high performance whereas relatively rigid geometric parameters need to be selected for designing a counter flow ejector.

Enhancing of the nonlinear absorption and optical limiting performances of the phthalocyanine thin films by adding of the single walled carbon nanotubes in poly(methyl methacrylate) host

Yuksek, Mustafa; Kaya, Elif Çelenk; Karabulutlu, Nur; Kaya, Ahmet Afşin; Karabulut, Mevlut; Elmali, Ayhan

Unlike the earlier nonlinear optical studies of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) which were generally carried out as solvent, in this study, we established to deposit the unsoluble SWCNTs as homogeneous thin films by blending them with phthalocyanines in PMMA host. The structural and morphological features of the thin films were studied by SEM and TEM imaging techniques while the linear, nonlinear-absorptions and carrier dynamic properties of the thin films were investigated with the UV–Vis spectrophotometer, open aperture Z-scan experiments and pump-probe technique, respectively. In addition, the optical limiting performances of the samples were calculated from nonlinear absorption spectra. It was observed that the linear- and nonlinear-absorptions and optical limiting performance of the thin films increased with the mixing of the SWCNT sample with the Pcs complexes. We have clearly explained the mechanisms contributing to the nonlinear optical absorption and optical limiting performances.

Latest Cretaceous “A2-type” granites in the Sakarya Zone, NE Turkey: Partial melting of mafic lower crust in response to roll-back of Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere

Karsli, Orhan; Aydin, Faruk; Uysal, Ibrahim; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Kumral, Mustafa; Kandemir, Raif; Budakoglu, Murat; Ketenci, Murat

An integrated study of comprehensive geochronological, geochemical, and Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic data was undertaken for the A-type Topcam pluton that intruded within the Sakarya Zone (NE Turkey) with the aims of elucidating its origin and tectonic significance and gaining new insights into the generation of aluminous A-type granites. New LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb crystallization ages of 72 and 73 Ma indicate emplacement in the Late Cretaceous time, just after extensive metaluminous I-type magmatism in the area. The pluton consists mainly of alkali feldspar, quartz, plagioclase, amphibole, and biotite with accessory minerals such as magnetite, apatite, and zircon. The outcrop is composed of granite, syenite, monzonite, and quartz monzonite and possesses a wide range of SiO2 content (57–70 wt%) with elevated Ga/Al ratios and low Mg# (mostly < 43). The pluton is metaluminous to weakly peraluminous, with aluminium saturation index (ASI) (molar Al2O3/[CaO + K2O + Na2O]) values of 0.82 to 1.18, and belongs to the shoshonitic and ultra-potassic series. All the samples exhibit relative enrichment in light rare earth elements (LREE) and significant negative Eu (Eu/Eu* = 0.31 to 0.86) anomalies on the chondrite-normalized REE diagram. The rocks are enriched in some large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb, Th and Ba), and spidergrams show a relative depletion in Nb, Ti, and Sr. The granitic rocks of the pluton have identical 87Sr/86Sr(i) ratios ranging from 0.70518 to 0.70716, relatively low εNd (t) values varying from − 5.5 to − 0.4, and TDM ages (0.82–1.19 Ga). In situ zircon analyses show that the rocks have variable negative and positive εHf (t) values (− 5.5 to 5.9) and Hf two-stage model ages (742 to 1468 Ma), which are indicative of minor addition of juvenile material. Sr-Nd isotope modelling suggests mixing of 70–90% of lower crustal-derived melt with ~ 10–30% of mantle-derived melt at lower crust depths. The heat source for partial melting is provided by upwelling of hot asthenosphere triggered by slab roll-back events. Geochemical and isotopic data reveal that metaluminous A2-type granites were derived from partial melting of the Paleozoic lower continental crust dominated by mafic rocks in amphibolitic composition, with minor input of subcontinental lithospheric mantle-derived magma followed by subsequent limited fractional crystallization to generate a variety of rock types. From integrating all available data with the regional tectonic evolution in the Sakarya Zone and adjacent regions, we attribute generation of aluminous A2-type granites to a back-arc extension in the subduction zone, which is induced by the roll-back of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic slab around 72 Ma. Consequently, we conclude that these A-type granites were related to intensive extension tectonic, which peaked during the late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) in response to the roll-back of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic slab, which is indicative of the final-stage subduction-related magmatism in the Sakarya Zone.

Prediction of the antimicrobial activity of walnut (Juglans regia L.) kernel aqueous extracts using artificial neural network and multiple linear regression

Kavuncuoglu, Hatice; Kavuncuoglu, Erhan; Karatas, Seyda Merve; Benli, Büsra; Sagdic, Osman; Yalcin, Hasan

The mathematical model was established to determine the diameter of inhibition zone of the walnut extract on the twelve bacterial species. Type of extraction, concentration, and pathogens were taken as input variables. Two models were used with the aim of designing this system. One of them was developed with artificial neural networks (ANN), and the other was formed with multiple linear regression (MLR). Four common training algorithms were used. Levenberg–Marquardt (LM), Bayesian regulation (BR), scaled conjugate gradient (SCG) and resilient back propagation (RP) were investigated, and the algorithms were compared. Root mean squared error and correlation coefficient were evaluated as performance criteria. When these criteria were analyzed, ANN showed high prediction performance, while MLR showed low prediction performance. As a result, it is seen that when the different input values are provided to the system developed with ANN, the most accurate inhibition zone (IZ) estimates were obtained. The results of this study could offer new perspectives, particularly in the field of microbiology, because these could be applied to other type of extraction, concentrations, and pathogens, without resorting to experiments.

Galileo satellite data contribution to GNSS solutions for short and long baselines

    Yalvac, S.; Berber, M.

GALILEO (Europe's Global Navigation Satellite System) is going full speed ahead to achieve full constellation by 2020. Since GALILEO is currently an emerging system, the contribution of these satellites to GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) solutions needs to be investigated. For this purpose, GNSS data collected at three IGS (International GNSS Service) MGEX (Multi GNSS Experiment) stations are analyzed. For the analyses, GPS (Global Positioning System) only, GLONASS (Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System) only, GALILEO-only and combined solutions are tested and also effect of baseline length is examined. The results indicate that compared to GPS, GLONASS and ALL (GPS + GLONASS + GALILEO) solutions, GALILEO results vary greatly. When GALILEO observations are combined with other observations, the precision goes down. That is to say, for short baseline solution, GALILEO results fluctuate around 1 cm in the horizontal plane and in the vertical plane variations are mostly within 3–5 cm. For long baseline solution, GALILEO results are going up and down in the horizontal between 2 and 3 cm and in the vertical roughly 10 cm. In terms of accuracy, for short baseline solution, GALILEO-only solution is close to GPS-only solution; yet, we cannot say the same thing for long baseline solution.

Geochemical and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope characteristics of the Miocene to Pliocene volcanic rocks from the Kandilli (Erzurum) area, Eastern Anatolia (Turkey): Implications for magma evolution in extension-related origin

Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aslan, Zafer; Aydınçakır, Emre; Yücel, Cem; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Şen, Cüneyt

This paper presents Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic and whole-rock geochemical data of Miocene to Pliocene volcanic rocks in the Eastern Anatolia (Turkey) aiming to unravel their sources and evolutionary history. The wide compositional range of lavas and pyroclastics includes basaltic andesite, basaltic trachyandesite, trachyandesite, andesite and trachydacite. These calc-alkaline volcanics are enriched in large ion lithophile elements and light rare earth elements and depleted in the high field strength elements. Sr-Nd isotope data indicate low values for 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.70432–0.70464) and high values for 143Nd/144Nd(i) (0.51272–0.51282). Further, these data are within the mantle array of the isotope ratio diagram. The lead (Pb) isotopic compositions (206Pb/204Pb(i) = 18.33 to 18.62, 207Pb/204Pb(i) = 15.51 to 15.60, 208Pb/204Pb(i) = 38.10 to 38.45) reveals the presence of an enriched source. The main petrological processes involved fractional crystallization and the mixing of at least two fractionated magmas having same source characteristics. All evidence supports the findings that the Kandilli volcanic rocks were derived from a partial melting of the both spinel and garnet bearing subcontinental lithospheric mantle, which had been previously metasomatized by mostly fluids derived from subducted slab during the collisional and post-collisional extension-related geodynamic setting in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey.

Experimental analysis for heat transfer of nanofluid with wire coil turbulators in a concentric tube heat exchanger

Akyürek, Eda Feyza; Geliş, Kadir; Şahin, Bayram; Manay, Eyüphan

Nanofluids are a novel class of heat transfer suspensions of metallic or nonmetallic nanopowders with a size of less than 100 nm in base fluids and they can increase heat transfer potential of the base fluids in various applications. In the last decade, nanofluids have become an intensive research topic because of their improved thermal properties and possible heat transfer applications. For comparison, an experiment using water as the working fluid in the heat exchanger without wire coils was also performed. Turbulent forced convection heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of Al2O3-water nanofluids in a concentric tube heat exchanger with and without wire coil turbulators were experimentally investigated in this research. Experiments effected particle volume concentrations of 0.4–0.8 to 1.2–1.6 vol% in the Reynolds number range from 4000 to 20,000. Two turbulators with the pitches of 25 mm and 39 mm were used. The average Nusselt number increased with increasing the Reynolds number and particle concentrations. Moreover, the pressure drop of the Al2O3-water nanofluid showed nearly equal to that of pure water at the same Reynolds number range. As a result, nanofluids with lower particle concentrations did not show an important influence on pressure drop change. Nonetheless, when the wire coils used in the heat exchanger, it increased pressure drop as well as the heat transfer coefficient.

A novel OTA-based circuit model corroborated by an experimental semiconductor memristor

    Gul, Fatih; Babacan, Yunus

A semiconductor memristor device based on a 300-nm ZnO thin film was fabricated by direct-current reactive sputter. The memristive behavior of this device was confirmed by time dependent current–voltage (I-V-t) measurements, and the distinctive pinched hysteresis I-V loops of the memristor were observed. Structural analysis of the ZnO memristor was carried out using both X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After physical implementation of the memristor, an operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) based memristor circuit was designed to emulate the ZnO-based semiconductor memristor for use in memristor-based circuit applications. All simulations were in good agreement with experimental results. In addition, a comparison of the proposed circuit with other memristor emulators was presented.

In this study, isolation, conventional and molecular characterizations of ten thermophilic bacteria from Rize/Ayder were carried out. Xylanase from Geobacillus galactosidasius BS61 (GenBank number: KX447660) was purified by acetone precipitation, Diethylaminoethyl-cellulose and Sephadex G-100 chromatographies. The xylanase of G. galactosidasius BS61 in clarifying fruit juice was also investigated. Enzyme was purified 29.80-fold with 75.18% yield; and molecular weight was determined as 78.15 kDa. The optimum temperature of xylanase was 60 °C. The enzyme activity was maintained fully after 24 h and over 50% after 168 h at pH 4.0–10.0, while optimum pH was 7.0. Km and Vmax for beech wood xylan were measured as 3.18 mg mL−1, 123 U mg protein−1. In addition, Ca2+, Na+, Al3+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Mg2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ had decreasing effect on enzyme activity, while enzyme activity had been protected against anions, especially HSO3− and HPO4 2− stimulated enzyme activity. Xylanase applications (with 15 U/mL enzyme activity) in orange and pomegranate juices were increased; and the sugar and turbidity amounts were reduced 17.36% ± 1.18 and 30.52 ± 1.23, respectively. These results indicated that the xylanase of G. galactosidasius BS61 has biotechnological potential in juice clarification due to its stability against metal ions, chemicals and high pH-values.

Tropical theileriosis caused by Theileria annulata obligate parasite that infect ruminant animals, including Bos taurus. The disease results massive economic losses in livestock production worldwide. Here we describe cloning, expression and both biochemical and structural characterization of beta enolase from Bos taurus in vitro and in silico. The interconversion of 2‑phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate was catalyzed by enolase is a metalloenzyme in glycolytic pathway and gluconeogenesis. Enolase from Bos taurus was cloned, expressed and the protein was purified at 95% purity using cobalt column by affinity chromatography. The optimum enzymatic activity was calculated at pH 6.5. For the first time in the literature, the kinetic parameters of the enzyme, Vmax and Km, were measured as 0.1141 mM/min and 0.514 mM, respectively. Besides, Bos taurus enolase 3-dimensional structure was built by homology modelling to be used in silico analyses. The interactions of the enzyme-substrate complex were elucidated by molecular dynamics simulations for 100 ns. These interactions were found to be the same as experimentally determined interactions in yeast. These results would enable further structure based drug design studies with the biochemical characterization of the host organism Bos taurus enolase enzyme in vitro and the elucidation of behavior of enzyme-substrate complex in silico.

Combination of discontinuity characteristics and GIS for regional assessment of natural rock slopes in a mountainous area (NE Turkey)

Bostanci, Hasan Tahsin; Alemdag, Selcuk; Gurocak, Zulfu; Gokceoglu, Candan

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have a very large spectrum of users. As in many engineering applications, GIS are frequently used in geotechnical projects, especially in producing various thematic and zoning maps such as various susceptibility and hazard maps. Instability maps for large areas with similar characteristic can be produced in a practical way by evaluating the results obtained by the data collected from field and laboratory studies. In order to introduce a methodology for producing rock slope instability maps for a large area, discontinuity controlled slope failures in the Köse Granitoid Complex (NE Turkey) were selected. To determine the types of failure such as planar, wedge, and toppling, and possible instable slope orientations kinematic analyses were carried out in the limited areas. The relationships between orientations of natural slopes and discontinuities obtained from kinematic analyses were evaluated with GIS software. Finally, discontinuity controlled instability maps were produced for the study area. Resulting maps show that the most common type of failure is wedge type. Additionally, the distributions of unstable areas along road networks were determined. Various land use types such as agriculture, grassland, settlement, and forest were also classified in order to predict the possible effects of slope instabilities. The methodology introduced in this study indicates highly promising results for the assessment of rock slope instability in large areas.

Modal parameter identification of RC frame under undamaged, damaged, repaired and strengthened conditions

Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Karahasan, Olguhan Şevket; Genç, Ali Fuat; Okur, Fatih Yesevi; Günaydin, Murat; Kalkan, Ebru; Adanur, Süleyman

Structures are built on a design and then damaged in time by natural and manmade effects, repaired and strengthened for reusing. Determination of the structural behavior is very important to avoid future disaster. Operational Modal Analysis has been widely used recently to determine the inherent modal parameters of engineering structures and give significant information about the structural condition. Also, this method can be used to further studies such as model updating, damage detection and health monitoring. In this paper, it is aimed to investigate the changes of modal parameters considering undamaged, damaged, repaired and strengthened conditions using ambient vibration tests. For this purpose, a reinforced concrete frame model having two-floor with two spans in the longitudinal direction considering ½ geometric scales is built in laboratory. Four different cases are considered to emerge the efficiency of this procedure and the undamaged RC model is measured firstly to determine the initial modal parameters. Secondly, the lateral forces are applied to floor levels to obtain the damages, especially in beam-column joints. Thirdly, the damaged model is repaired using injection material and lastly strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforcement Polymer. It is also examined that what rate the dynamic characteristics return to back after repairing and strengthening studies by the comparison with undamaged condition? In addition to this the evaluation of carbon fiber reinforcement polymer effectiveness in strengthening for real applications is presented. It is seen that ambient vibration test is enough to identify the modal parameters of engineering structures for different conditions. The modal parameters are decreased distinctly with damages, and reverted almost initial condition with strengthening.

Novel eugenol derivatives: Potent acetylcholinesterase and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors

Topal, Fevzi; Gulcin, Ilhami; Dastan, Arif; Guney, Murat

Eugenol was used as starting material to obtain some phenolic compounds. The synthesis of these phenolic compounds was performed in a two-step procedure. The structures of the formed products (novel eugenol derivatives 1–6) have been determined on the basis of NMR spectroscopy and other spectroscopic methods. The compounds were tested in terms of carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibition potency. Carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1) are metalloenzymes, which catalyse the reaction between carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), to generate bicarbonate (HCO3−) and protons (H+). CO2, HCO3− and H+ are essential molecules and ions for many important physiologic processes occurring in all living organisms. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE, E.C.3.1.1.7) is found in high concentrations in the red blood cells and brain. Novel eugenol derivatives (1–6) were tested for the inhibition of two cytosolic CA isoforms I, and II (hCA I, and II) and AChE. These compounds demonstrated effective inhibitory profiles with Ki values in ranging of 113.48-738.69 nM against hCA I, 92.35-530.81 nM against hCA II, and 90.10-379.57 nM against AChE, respectively. On the other hand, acetazolamide clinically used as CA inhibitor, shoed Ki value of 594.11 nM against hCA I, and 120.68 nM against hCA II, respectively. Also, AChE was inhibited by tacrine as an AChE inhibitor at the 71.18 nM level.

Background: Morus nigra L. belongs to the family Moraceae and is frequently used in traditional medicine. Numerous studies have investigated the antiproliferative effects of various extracts of different Morus species, but studies involving the in vitro cytotoxic effect of M. nigra extract are very limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the phenolic composition and antioxidant activity of dimethyl sulfoxide extract of M. nigra (DEM) and to investigate, for the first time, the probable cytotoxic effect in human prostate adenocarcinoma (PC-3) cells together with the mechanism involved. Methods: Total polyphenolic contents (TPC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and phenolic compounds of DEM were evaluated using spectrophotometric procedures and HPLC. The cytotoxic effect of DEM on PC-3 cells was revealed using the MTT assay. Mechanisms involved in the cytotoxic effect of DEM on PC-3 cells were then investigated in terms of apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential and cell cycle using flow cytometry, while caspase activity was investigated using luminometric analysis. Results: TPC and FRAP values were 20.7 ± 0.3 mg gallic acid equivalents and 48.8 ± 1.6 mg trolox equivalents per g sample, respectively. Ascorbic acid and chlorogenic acid were the major phenolic compounds detected at HPLC analysis. DEM arrested the cell cycle of PC-3 cells at the G1 phase, induced apoptosis via increased caspase activity and reduced mitochondrial membrane potential. Conclusions: Our results indicate that M. nigra may be a novel candidate for the development of new natural product based therapeutic agents against prostate cancer.

Formation of the Eğrikar (Gümüşhane) Fe–Cu skarn type mineralization in NE Turkey: U–Pb zircon age, lithogeochemistry, mineral chemistry, fluid inclusion, and O-H-C-S isotopic compositions

Sipahi, Ferkan; Akpınar, İbrahim; Eker, Çiğdem Saydam; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Vural, Alaaddin; Yılmaz, Meltem

The Eğrikar Fe–Cu skarn type mineralization is located approximately 100 km NW of Gümüşhane in NE Turkey. Geochemical analyses of diorite, which is thought to cause skarn, indicate medium K calc-alkaline (1.3 to ~ 2.3 wt% K2O), metaluminous to peraluminous (A/CNK = 0.76 to 1.13) and resembles a continental arc granite. The age of U–Pb zircon obtained from diorite is 42.3 ± 1.0 Ma, which reflects the age of skarn metasomatism after intrusion into Late Cretaceous sandy carbonates. Skarn formation zones are recognized as endo- and exoskarn. The endoskarn zone mainly consists of pyroxene with hedenbergite (Di4.31–28.14Hd59.29–80.82Jo5.0–35.55) at prograde stage. Mn content of pyroxene increases a slight from endo to exoskarn. Pyroxene is replaced by epidote and hornblende at the retrograde stage. The exoskarn zone comprises garnet with andradite (Ad91-99Gr01–07) and grossular-andradite (Ad44-95Gr05–54), epidote and quartz as silicate minerals, and magnetite and hematite as ore minerals. Magnetite is the abundant ore mineral and is accompanied by chalcopyrite and minor pyrite at retrograde stage. On the basis of fluid inclusion values of minerals, the temperature range for hedenbergite in endo-exoskarn is 350 °C–425 °C, for epidote in exoskarn is 365 °C–376 °C, and for quartz in exoskarn 200 °C–380 °C. NaCl equivalent salinity for hedenbergite 6.88–10.73 wt% and for quartz is 3.9–15.38 wt. The δ18O values of hedenbergite is 4.1 to 4.7‰ and for garnet 3.4‰ at prograde stage, for epidote 7.9–9.2‰, for magnetite 1 to 4.4‰, for hematite − 2.9 to − 1.6‰ and for quartz range between 8.5‰ and 15.2‰. The δ18O value of epidote suggests that oxygen is a magmatic fluid whereas hedenbergite, garnet, quartz and magnetite show the mixing of magmatic and meteoric fluids. In addition, the C isotope values (− 3.2 to 2.8‰) of calcite and marble in Eğrikar Fe–Cu skarn reflect those of metamorphic, and skarns. Based on oxygen isotope data from mineral pairs, the retrograde skarn formation is characterized by epidote–magnetite assemblage formed at 255 °C–438 °C. Fluid oxygen isotope compositions of magnetite and epidote pairs of the exoskarn skarn zone indicate a mixing of magmatic and meteoric fluids with narrow δ18O values between 7.17‰ and 8.9‰. The δ34S values of the pyrites exhibit a narrow range of 3‰ and 4.4‰, thereby indicating that sulfur were probably leached from magmatic rocks. Based on the field and laboratory observation, mineral chemistries, fluid inclusion studies and isotope composition analysis, it is suggested that the Eğrikar Fe–Cu skarn mineralization occurs in a magmatic origin fluids being initially under reduced conditions, subsequently under oxidized conditions, and at shallow depth.

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea), green tea (Camellia sinensis) and yaylacayi (Thymus praecox OPIZ subsp. grossheimii (Ronniger) Jalas) are herbs used in traditional medicine because of their beneficial health effects. A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) post-column method was developed by coupling HPLC with on-line antioxidant assays using diode array (DAD) and ultraviolet (UV) detectors. Thus antioxidant compounds and fifteen phenolic standards were detected in echinacea, green tea and yaylacayi methanol extracts simultaneously. Later on, the developed on-line HPLC coupled system was used to compare three different antioxidant methods, ABTS [2,2′-Azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)], DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and FRAP (Ferric reducing antioxidant power). Eight compounds with antioxidant activity were identified as gallic acid, protocatechuic aldehyde, p-OH benzoic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, vanillin, ferulic acid, and rosmarinic acid. For validation purposes, LOD (limit of detection) (0.36–14.68 μg/mL) and LOQ (limit of quantification) (1.35–48.92 μg/mL) values were calculated for six standards. The results showed that while the post-column ABTS and FRAP assays were repeatable, sensitive and supportive of each other, the post-column DPPH assay did not provide reliable results. Also due to the base-line noise and drifts in post-column DPPH assay, identification and quantitation of analytes could not be done accurately.

Subduction-related Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Magmatism in the Eastern Pontides, the Camlik and Casurluk plutons: Insights from geochemistry, whole-rock Sr–Nd and in situ zircon Lu–Hf isotopes, and U–Pb geochronology

Late Carboniferous to early Permian granitoid rocks represent a volumetrically minor component of the Eastern Pontide lithosphere, but they preserve useful information about the region's tectonomagmatic history. The Casurluk and Camlik plutons primarily consist of gabbro, gabbroic diorite, diorite, monzogabbro, monzodiorite and monzonite, which intrude early to middle Carboniferous granitic basement rocks in the region. In this study, we use in situ zircon U–Pb ages and Lu–Hf isotopic values, whole-rock Sr–Nd isotopic values, and mineral chemistry and geochemistry of these plutons to determine petrogenesis and crustal evolution; we also discuss geodynamic implications. LA–ICP-MS zircon U–Pb dating of magmatic zircons from the rocks suggests that the plutons were emplaced during the late Carboniferous to early Permian (302 Ma). The metaluminous and I-type intrusive rocks belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series. In addition, they are relatively enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs); they are depleted in heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) and high field strength elements (HFSEs), such as Nb and Ti. All of the samples have homogeneous initial ISr values (0.70675 to 0.70792) and low εNd (t) values (− 5.1 to − 3.3). Zircons from the rocks of both plutons have uniform negative to slightly positive εHf (t) values (− 3.5 to 1.4) and old Hf two-stage model ages (1323 to 1548 Ma), implying that they have the same source, as well as suggesting the involvement of old enriched lithospheric mantle materials during their magma genesis. These results, combined with the εHf (t) values and two-stage model ages, demonstrate that the primary magmas were derived from partial melting of old lithospheric mantle material metasomatized by subduction-related fluids. Considering other regional geological data from the Sakarya Zone where these plutons formed, we conclude that late Carboniferous to early Permian magmatism in the area involved the partial melting of a phlogopite- and spinel-bearing lherzolite under an extensional regime in a subduction-related setting. Such an extension event would have caused hot asthenospheric upwelling and was likely triggered by back-arc rifting during subduction of the Paleo-Tethyan oceanic slab. Thus, the magmas are likely subduction-related products, implying that southward subduction of Paleo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere in the region began during the late Carboniferous to early Permian.
