Antecedents of Country-of-Origin Image and Its Effect on Behavioral Intentions

Sevim, Nurdan; Hall, Elif Eroglu; Izmir, Onur

The effects of country-of-origin image (COI) on product preferences/ evaluation and purchase intention have been long examined under different contexts. However, literature lacks when it comes to identifying antecedents of COI. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to (1) identify a set of antecedents of COI and (2) test the validity of two-dimensional COI construct composed of cognition and affect. In this study four possible socio-psychological antecedents of COI were determined from the literature. Using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), the research model is tested based on the data collected in Turkey and Germany. In this context, the effects of four socio-psychological constructs on COI were tested and significant effects of psychic distance, cosmopolitanism, xenocentrism and ethnocentrism were identified. Moreover, it was determined that COI has been conceptually misevaluated in the literature to the extent of a theoretical myopia. Although some authors pointed out this theoretical gap and tabulated studies based on how COI was measured to reveal the problem, they did not produce a clear solution. This study collected items from the literature to measure affective and cognitive dimensions of COI and found a good fit to the data. Conation/ behavioral dimension is placed in the model as an outcome of COI, not as a dimension that forms the construct of COI. Furthermore, strong associations between COI and behavioral intentions were identified across four brands and two different samples.

Authentication of hazelnut oil by portable ft-nir, ft-mir and raman spectrometers combined with multivariate data analysis

    Aykas, Didem Peren; Menevseoglu, Ahmed

This research studied the authentication of hazelnut oil by portable FT-NIR, FT-MIR, and Raman spectrometers. Hazelnut oils were adulterated with vegetable oils at various concentrations (0-25%) (w/w). Collected spectra were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Soft Independent Modelling of Class Analogy (SIMCA) to generate classification models to authenticate pure hazelnut oil and Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) to predict the fatty acids and adulterant levels. For confirmation, oil’s fatty acid profile was determined by gas chromatography. In all three instruments, SIMCA provided distinct clusters for pure and adulterated samples with interclass distance (ICD)>3. All instruments showed excellent performance in predicting fatty acids and adulteration levels with rᵥₐₗ>0.93 and standard error prediction (SEP)<1.75%. Specifically, the FT-MIR unit provided the best performances. Still, all the units can be used as an alternative to traditional methods. These units showed great potential for in-situ surveillance to detect hazelnut oil adulterations.

Gyroscopic Vibration Damper for Building: Theoretical and Experimental Research

    Ünker, Faruk; Cuvalci, Olkan

In this study, a gyroscopic damper model consisting of a built-in column has been developed. The objective of this study is determining the required angular momentum with the optimum ratio of natural frequency for the gyroscopic vibration absorber under sinusoidal excitation. This damper model is investigated experimentally and theoretically for different angular momentums of the gyroscope and different frequency ratios of the structure and damper on a single-story structure. As a result of the study, the displacement of the structure at the 1st mode frequency for a given angular momentum of the gyroscope is fairly reduced. Besides, at a notable frequency ratio of the damper and the structure, the effect of the angular momentum is improved. Even if the disk mass of the gyroscope decreases, it is possible to obtain a certain angular momentum by increasing the disk speed. Thus, lighter and less bulky gyroscopic vibration dampers can be designed. The cooperation of the required angular momentum with the optimum ratio of natural frequencies should be considered to obtain a highest attenuation of the building vibration. In addition, the equations of motion obtained according to the 1st mode and the theoretical results overlapped.

The Role of ‘Ăisha in the Transmission and Critique of Hadīth

    Khan, Alam

This article deals with the role of ‘Ăisha in the science of hadīth. She was the younger wife of the Prophet and accompanied him for a long time. She has been distinguished with the sharp memory among Prophet’s companions, that preserved every tiny detail of his life and got a prominent position among the muksirūn al-hadīth. She played a pivotal role in the transmission of hadīth, hence, she was the primary source of referring to the Prophet’s companions and their successors. It is concluded from a thorough review of her narrations that her hadīths were contained those pieces of information which rarely found in the narrations of other transmitters. She was not a transmitter solely, but she was also a great mufassira, muhaddītha, and faqīha of her time. The companions were visiting her for the investigation and attestation of a hadīth, the exegesis of a Quranic verse, and the explanation of an Islamic provision. Moreover, she criticised with a scientific method, the narrations of fellow Prophet’s companions that they attributed to the Prophet. A detailed study of her critique showed that whenever she was informed by a narration and asked for attestation she was presenting it to the Holy Qurān, the authentic hadīth, the proven history, and qiyās al-‘Aqlī. If there was any conflict among the transmitted hadīth with these sources, she was showing her concern about it and questioning the understanding or the memory of the narrator, which are discussed with explanatory examples in this study.

A Challenge for Systemic Transformation towards Circular Healthcare Economy: Single-Use or Not?

    Demır, Hüseyın; Karaer, Merve

The study aims to discuss the challenge of systemic transformation of healthcare economy in the context of disinfection and sterilization (DAS) process. The database of the Web of Science (WoS) has been used to obtain data. In R environment, a variety of analyzes have been conducted through the biblioshiny. Following the descriptive findings, trend words, trend word weights and related visuals have been obtained. Multiple correspondence analysis was used to evaluate the development course of trending words by year, and the ggplot2 package has been used to visualization. An attempt has been made to draw attention to the difficulty of the systemic transformation of the healthcare economy by supporting the circular approach concepts featured in the publications with knowledge and experience from the field. The number of publications and citations in the field has shown an increasing trend. Prominent studies have been conducted in the areas of infection control, dialysis, anesthesia, and analgesia. Trend words have shown that life cycle assessment, reuse, sterilization, reprocessing, etc. concepts have a high level of centricity and concentration. Similarly, multiple correspondence analysis findings have shown that a heavy reliance has been placed on DAS processes in recent studies. The results clearly show that the systemic transformation from a linear healthcare economy to a circular one will create challenges for hospital administrations. It is therefore assessed that a hybrid approach to the continued use of disposable products instead of a purely circular approach will be beneficial to the sustainability of healthcare.

Understanding Nursing Students’ Experience Through Digital Storytelling

Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla; Tatli, Zeynep

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore both the student-created digital storytelling and the views of peer sharing of digital\rstorytelling that reflect the clinical experiences of nursing students. Methods: The study employed an explorative qualitative\rdesign. The data were collected with a questionnaire containing the findings related to the process of digital story formation and\rSWOT analysis. After peer sharing, the effect of the digital storytelling on the clinical process was determined with a semistructured interview form. The study follows the COREQ guidelines for qualitative studies. Results: The findings showed that that\rthe student-created digital storytelling was insufficient hardware, interactive and triggering way of communication. While the study\ralso revealed that they had a lack of deeper thinking and product creation had a positive effect on self-esteem. Conclusion: Studentcreated digital storytelling seems to be effective in conveying the clinical experiences. Considering the fact that the acquired\rhardware contributes to a desired level of learning, it can be said that digital stories are the right tools for transferring sharing\rsubjects. In addition, it can be said that an environment should be created for the students to become aware of their weaknesses and\rthreats. In this context, it can be stated that the information obtained from the peer sharing of students contributed to both\rprofessional life and individual equipment during the study. The sharing of different clinical settings with students with the help of\ra technological tool makes the students feel more comfortable in the clinic. The digital story is a method that can be used by young\rpeople of similar ages, both in terms of students preparing their own experiences and being a technological product.

Mimetic Desire and Scapegoating Mechanisms in Martin Amis’s “The Last Days of Muhammad Atta”

    Güneş, Mustafa

René Girard, the French sacrifice theory doyen, bases her sacrifice and scapegoat arguments on cultural and literary representations and claims an end for the sacrificial rites and scapegoating mechanism in cultures and narratives after the exposition and deciphering of the stereotypes of persecution with Christianity. However, by referring to René Girard’s sacrifice theory, this study aims to argue that one of the greatest yet also most notorious writers of English fiction, Martin Amis, who recurrently touches upon such issues in his texts as racism, sexism, wars, capitalism, and terrorism, implies a modern enactment of the mechanism of mimetic desire and scapegoating in a literary work, that is “The Last Days of Muhammad Atta,” which revolves around the last days of one of the terrorists of 9/11. Amis’s short fiction will be subjected to a close reading so as to argue that despite Amis’s interviews and arguments associating terrorism with Islam and the Orient, the text deconstructs Amis’s allegations against Islamism and the Oriental, and when Amis’s text is considered as a modern and multi-layered representation of mechanisms of mimetic desire and scapegoating, the violence and terrorism are revealed to be issues which cannot solely be identified with a single milieu or a group nonchalantly. Instead, it will be clearly seen that the core drive for humans has always been the will to power and to ensure authority over the other throughout the centuries, whether it be primitive tribes, or civilized groups, or modern governments and nations, and such concentrations as a nation, community, or religion further worked to give their civilized members a cause to satisfy the primitive tendency to violence and carnage surviving in their repressed collective unconscious.

Çelik, Hüseyin; Karabulut, Besim; Kose, Bulent; Uray, Yahya; Türk, Fatma

One of the important factors affecting rootstock performance in grafted grapevine production is root structure and its ability for\rdifferent soil. In the present study, foxy grape varieties registered for the first time in the Black Sea Region in Turkey by the\rselection, and several American grape rootstocks were bench grafted. In this study; it is aimed to examine the root architecture of\rfoxy grape grafted saplings for their root architecture and the development of rootstocks. In the experiment ‘Rizessi’, ‘Çeliksu’,\r‘Ülkemiz’ and ‘Rizellim’ foxy grape cultivars grafted on 140Ru, SO4 and 110R rootstocks. WinRhizo root analysis program (Regent\rInstrument Inc. Canada, ver.2013) was used to determine rootstocks' architecture and development of grafted vine saplings. Roots\rprepared for scanning were placed on the scanning part of the device and transferred to the computer context. Root length and\rmean root diameter are two of the essential features that reveal the root architecture of rootstocks. In the study, root length (cm),\rroot surface area (cm2), root diameter (mm), root volume (cm3), root tip number (piece), root branching number (piece), and root\rintersection number (piece) were determined. Total root length was determined between 330.05 - 595.40 cm ('Rizellim'/SO4 and\r'Çeliksu'/140Ru) and mean root diameter of 2.04 - 3.13 mm ('Çeliksu'/140Ru and 'Rizessi'/110R). Negative relationships were found\rbetween root length and mean root diameter. Among the rootstocks, the highest root surface area was 399.67 cm2, root volume\rwas 29.32 m3, the number of root tips was 1605.75, the number of root forks was 5421.89, and the number of root crossing was\r671.61 on 110R rootstock. In all combinations obtained as a result of the study, it was determined that the rootstocks showed\rgood root development and were in harmony with the new foxy grape cultivars.

The Effect of Behavioral Instruments on the Savings in Private\rPension Plans: The Case of Turkey

    Altun, Tülın; Aydın, Aykut

In Turkey, significant changes have been made in the legislation of Individual\rPension System (IPS) in 2012 (matching contribution system has been introduced) and\r2016 (Automatic Enrollment System has been established). Thus, behavioral\rinstruments which can be defined as libertarian paternalistic, such as default rules and\rframing, have begun to be used more effectively in IPS. When the progress in IPS\rbetween the years 2003-2021 is examined, it has been determined that behavioral\rinstruments have a positive effect on the savings in the system, but these effects are\rsmall. It was concluded that the participants decided to continue or exit IPS with rational\rreasons. Participants who can benefit from full state subsidy in shorter time, have higher\rcontinuation rate and contribution amounts in the system. Participants exit the system\rwhen exits are optimal (such as after 36th months when they are entitled to benefit\rfrom the minimum state subsidy, and after the 5th year when entrance fees are no\rlonger charged). With rational reasons like the real return of IPS being lower compared\rto alternative investment instruments and its fund management fees being high, the\rhouseholds in Turkey either do not prefer saving on IPS or see the IPS as a short-term\rsaving instrument.
