Background and study aims: Esophageal burns due to ingestion of corrosive substances are frequently seen in both children and adults. However, there is no standard method of treatment to prevent associated mortality and morbidity. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of known antioxidants, namely N-acetyl cysteine and ethyl pyruvate, on esophageal damage due to sodium hydroxide-induced corrosive burns. Materials and methods: Thirty-five female rats were randomly assigned to five equal groups. Group 1 was the sham group, while Group 2 was the control group. Group 3 received N-acetyl cysteine, Group 4 received ethyl pyruvate, and Group 5 received both N-acetyl cysteine and ethyl pyruvate. Rats in the burn groups were gavage-fed with 0.2mL of 25% NaOH. All esophagi were extracted on day 4 for histopathological evaluation. Results: Total histopathological damage scores were evaluated at the end of the study. Groups 3 and 5 were significantly different from the control group in terms of total histopathological scores (p = 0.001), while no significant difference was seen with Group 4. Stenosis index results in groups 3 and 5 were similar to those seen with total histopathological scores (p = 0.004). Conclusion: N-acetyl cysteine, alone or in combination with ethyl pyruvate, may be useful in the treatment of esophageal damage associated with corrosive substances and in achieving histopathological improvement in an experimental setting. Onturk, Yavuz; Bingol, Erkan; Efek, Engin; Bayrakdaroglu, Yesim; Gorun, Levent
The aim of this study to examine the trait anxiety level of referees in different branches in terms of some variables. For the model of the research, the survey model, one of the quantitative research types, was chosen. While the population of the research is composed of referees working in different branches in Mugla Province, the sample is composed of 167 referees who have been chosen by a randomized sampling method and participated in the research voluntarily. The authors designed a personal information form for the demographical information of the participants. The Trait Anxiety Inventory developed by Spielberger, Gorsuch and Luschene (1) (1970) and adapted to Turkish by Oner and Le Compte (2) (1983) was used to determine the participants' anxiety levels. The data obtained from the form and scale used were analyzed using the SPSS 17 package program. Frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation values were used in the analysis of the data. Data normal distributions were analyzed with Skewness-Kurtosis values. Since the data showed normal distribution, t-test and ANOVA test, which are parametric tests, were used, and the significance level was accepted as p <0.05. According to the findings of the study, while the anxiety levels of the referees showed significant differences in terms of gender, they did not display a significant difference with the variables of age, education level, refereeing time and refereeing classification. Consequently, the trait anxiety levels of female referees are significantly higher in favor of the trait anxiety levels of male referees. This study revealed that anxiety-reducing training should be focused on reducing the trait anxiety situations that female referees experience more than male referees.

Purpose: The aerobic fitness in soccer is an important performance component. The aerobic endurance level of players may positively effect performance of critical match activities. The examination of Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test (YYIRT) performance of young soccer players at different playing positions was aimed in this study. Material: The research group was consisted of 75 young soccer players playing at U-21 category of professional soccer teams at different leagues. The soccer players at 5 different playing positions participated in study voluntarily (centerback: n=15, fullback: midfielder: n=15, winger: n=15, forward: n=15). The YYIRT (level 1) was performed for determination aerobic endurance parameters (covered distance during test, maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and maximal aerobic speed (MAS) of players. The one-way ANOVA analysis was used for comparison between playing positions of YYIRT parameters. Results: It was determined that difference between YYIRT parameters of players at different playing positions was non-significant (p>0.05). However, the midfielders covered more distance (2425,33 +/- 440,42 m) than forward (2146,67 +/- 339,64 m), winger (2137,33 +/- 615,18 m), fullback (2056,00 +/- 512,43 m) and centerback (1960,00 +/- 313,51 m) players. The positional requirements of midfielders may be decisive on covered distance during YYIRT. Conclusions: Consequently, it may be said that the young soccer players at different playing positions had similar YYIRT performance and the playing position effect on YYIRT performance could vary depending on league level and individual features of players.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Can Zeolite Application Decrease the Need for Nitrogen in Silage Corn?
Gül, Zeynep; Tang, Mustafa; Yolcu, Halil
The effects of applications of zeolite, nitrogen and zeolite + nitrogen on yield, quality and some morphological traits of silage corn was researched at the Research Station of the Agriculture Faculty, University of Ataturk, Eastern Turkey, during 2012 and 2013. Treatments included a control, three zeolite (Z(1): 500, Z(2): 1000, Z(3): 1500 kg ha(-1)), three nitrogen (N-1: 50, N-2: 100, N-3: 150 kg ha(-1)) and nine combinations of zeolite + nitrogen. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with three replications. The application of zeolite + nitrogen application enhanced silage yield by 5.8-18.9%, dry matter yield by 4.5-21.4%, corncob rate by 6.6%, plant height by 3.0-16.1% and leaf rate by 17.5%. Further, the application of zeolite + medium or low nitrogen application produced similar silage yield, dry matter yield, dry matter rate, crude protein content, ADF, NDF, corncob rate, stem rate, plant height and leaf rate in comparison to the highest level nitrogen application. The results indicate that the application of zeolite + nitrogen can be used to increase efficiency of nitrogen and to decrease nitrogen requirements in silage corn for yield and other parameters.

Purpose: To investigate the healing effect of resveratrol on ischemia, inflammation and oxidative injury in brain and heart tissue of rats in an experimentally induced carbonmonoxide (CO) intoxication model. Methods: Twenty-eight mature female Spraque Dawley rats were randomized into four groups of seven animals each. Groups I and II inhaled room air for 60 minutes. Groups III and IV inhaled a high concentration of a 5000 ppm CO gas mixture at 4 L/min until loss of consciousness. Blood CO levels were measured from 1 mL blood specimens collected from the tail vein. Groups I and III received 1 mL of normal saline while groups II and IV received 25 mg/kg resveratrol intraperitoneally. At the end of 48 hour, the rats were sacrified and later blood, brain and heart tissue samples were taken for histopathological and biochemical evaluation. Neuron damage scores, percentages of degenerate neurons and apoptosis rates in the cortex and hypothalamus were calculated in brain tissues. Myocyte degeneration, vascular congestion and myocyte apoptosis rates were calculated in heart tissues. Total antioxidant (TAS), total oxidant (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) levels were also calculated from the tissue samples. Results: Histopathological evaluation revealed that resveratrol significantly reduced tissue damage in the brain when groups III and IV were compared (p<0.05). Resveratrol also reduced cardiac myocyte degeneration and myocyte apoptosis rate in heart tissue (p=0.004 and p=0.002). No positive effect was determined at analysis of antioxidant parameters. Conclusion: The results of this study investigated that resveratrol administration in experimental setting may be beneficial in healing injury secondary to CO intoxication in brain and heart tissue.

The Hudai-Sandikli geothermal basin having 23 thermal productivity wells is a significant geothermal energy source field. The analysis of power spectrum, conventional heat flow and silica heat flow methods were implemented to identify the geothermal waters circulation depth, depth to Curie point and surface heat flow rate in the Hudai-Sandikli geothermal field. Hydrogeochemical facies of geothermal immature ancient waters having deep circulation in lower hydraulic conductive aquifers are Na-Ca-HCO3-SO4 and Na-Ca-SO4-HCO3, which is represented very high ion content because of extensive contact with rocks. The heat conduction law is employed to specify the rate of heat flow using the geothermal gradient value. The numerical results determined from silica geothermometer method, the mean heat flow density and Curie temperature depth are obtained as 103.69 mWm(-2) and 11.81 km, respectively. The study region was represented by a mean geothermal gradient of 49.18 degrees C km(-1) yielding average reservoir depths of 0.90 km. The estimated Curie temperature, heat flow, reservoir temperature values demonstrated that the region indicates significant geothermal energy potential because of the partial melting of lithospheric crust.

Misir, Sema; Aliyazicioglu, Yüksel; Demir, Selim; Turan, Ibrahim; Hepokur, Ceylan
Enriched in flavonoid compounds, phenol acids, and terpene derivatives, propolis has been shown to regulate apoptosis signaling pathways and alter the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs). In the present study, it has been aimed to examine the effects of Turkish propolis on miRNA levels of breast cancer (MCF-7) cells, and its relationship with cell proliferation and apoptosis. Cytotoxic activity of ethanolic propolis extract (EEP) was evaluated using MTT assay. Mechanisms involved in the cytotoxic action of Turkish propolis in MCF-7 cells were investigated with regard to apoptosis and cell cycle using flow cytometry and western blot. Mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were evaluated by spectrofluorometric method. miRNA levels were detected by qRT-PCR method. EEP exhibited selective toxicity against MCF-7 cells compared to normal fibroblast cells. EEP increased the cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase. EEP elevated the apoptotic cell death through increasing pro-apoptotic protein levels (p21, Bax, p53, p53-Ser46, and p53-Ser15), decreasing MMP and altering the expression levels of specific tumor suppressors (miR-34, miR-15a, and miR-16-5p) and oncogenic (miR-21) miRNAs. These data support that Turkish propolis may be evaluated as a potential natural agent for new anticancer drugs in future.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ2Determination of geological structures by geophysical and geotechnical techniques in Kırklartepe Dam Site (Turkey)
Sari, Mahmut; Seren, Aysel; Alemdag, Selcuk
In foundation research of engineering structures, application of geophysics methods before drilling work allows not only more economical studies but also a more detailed determination of underground sections. Especially in pre-feasibility studies on long tunnel routes, dam sites and lake areas, it has a vital importance in terms of structural safety to determine possible underground buried fault lines, lithology changes, anticlinal-synclinal structures and underground openings. By considering these effective factors, the alluvium/bedrock border and the positions of potential buried faults in the dam site and lake area in the Kırklartepe area of the province of Bayburt in northeastern Turkey were determined by comparison with geophysical and geotechnical methods. First of all, the resistivity of the dam axis location and the change of the Vp wave velocity by depth were determined by comparing the results between geophysical methods of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and seismic refraction tomography (SRT), respectively. Afterwards, from the foundation boreholes opened in the dam axis location, joint frequency and the other parameters determined by observations were obtained. With these parameters, 2-dimensional zoning profiles of the dam axis location were formed, and the alluvium-bedrock border and the locations of the buried faults were determined. Two potential faults in the NW-SE direction relative to the location of the dam axis were clearly revealed in the zoning profiles obtained in the ERT and SRT measurements. Additionally, the presence of these faults was determined as a result of examining the separation and joint frequency parameters from the drilling core samples collected from the BH_3 and BH_5 boreholes opened in the investigated area based on changes in the vertical and horizontal directions. In addition to these, in the ERT study, two potential faults other than the determined two were also detected. It was seen in the zoning profiles that these faults corresponded to right under the BH_2 borehole and 60 m SW of the BH_6 drilling. Consequently, in the zoning studies conducted at the examined site, the change in the lithology at the dam axis by depth (alluvium-bedrock border), lateral correlations of boreholes and potential faults were determined. It was recommended for the selected dam axis location to be constructed at a more suitable place in the NW direction in terms of engineering. Furthermore, with this study, it was revealed once again that it is highly essential to use geophysical and geotechnical together in conceptualizing large engineering structure projects.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ4Plasticity in behavior of Turkish malting barley cultivars under semi-arid and continental climatic conditions
Sirat, Abdulveli; Bahar, Bilge
This study aimed to select stable cultivars in terms of desired agronomic or quality criteria from among 15 two rowed barley cultivars that may remain stable in varying year conditions during 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. Furthermore, relationships among these traits were investigated. Some agronomical and quality traits of barley were affected by years and cultivars. Yield, yield components and some quality parameters were affected by the cultivars. Also, days to ripening was affected by years, cultivars, and year x cultivar interaction. Crude protein content (CPC) was significantly positive correlated with ASH during both seasons. Starch ratio (SR) showed significantly negative correlations with ASH and CPC during both seasons. ADF and NDF had significant positive strong correlation with one another and ASH during both years while they showed significant negative correlations with SR. The results show that technological properties are not affected by the interaction of cultivar x year; therefore, these stable cultivars can be readily used in malt or feed technology if their technological features are considered. For example, cv. Unver contained low ratios of ash, CPC, oil, soluble fiber and high SR in the malt industry; cv. Hasat which includes the opposite technological properties of cv. Unver, was found be suitable for use in feed technology.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ1SOS5 gene-abscisic acid crosstalk and their interaction with antioxidant system in Arabidopsis thaliana under salt stress
Acet, Tuba; Kadıoğlu, Asım
SOS5 locus, encodes cell wall adhesion protein under salt stress conditions in plants, and it is required for normal cell expansion as well as for sustaining cell wall integrity and structure. However, it is still unknown how this gene locus-ABA cross-talk and interacts with the antioxidant mechanism under salt stress conditions. For this purpose, the study focused on mutant sos5-1 plant treated with ABA under NaCl stress and observed its growth and development as well as stomatal aperture, lipid peroxidation, proline, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ABA contents, and some antioxidant enzyme activities. In addition, the expression levels of ABA related genes have been analysed by RT-PCR after stress application. According to findings, sos5-1 mutant plants treated with ABA under salt stress resulted in eliminated cellular damage compared to those which are solely exposed to salt stress; other observations include closing of stomata, decreased H2O2 content, increased amount of proline, and similarity with the wild type due to induced antioxidant enzyme activities. Besides, both ABA biosynthetic and inducible gene expressions of the mutant plant under salt stress were lower compared to the control, and catabolism gene expression was higher. As a result, SOS5 gene in synergy with ABA, scavenge the ROS by stimulating antioxidant system, leads to an increase in stress related gene expressions and thus contributes to salinity tolerance. This study is significant in the way that it shows how SOS5 gene locus, under salt stress conditions, interacts with antioxidant system in sustaining cell wall integrity.
