- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026Remuneration and Duties in Ottoman Waqfs: The Case of Hafsa Sultan Waqf (Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries)
Karademir, Ayşenur
Ottoman charitable endowments, known as waqfs, were established by the sultan, his family, and the members of the ruling class, serving as primary employment institutions during the classical period. These waqfs offered a broad range of social services through various public structures, thereby employing a vast number of individuals with diverse skills and educational backgrounds across the empire. This study focuses specifically on wage determination within the Manisa Waqf of Hafsa Sultan, the mother of the renowned Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, established in 1523. The waqf complex outlined in the endowment deed, comprised a mosque, a primary school, a madrasa, a dervish lodge (hankah) and a soup-kitchen (imaret). Subsequently, it expanded to include a hospital (dârüşşifâ) and a Turkish bath (hamam). Starting with an analysis of the endowment deed, this study further examines the seventeenth and eighteenth-century accounting books retrieved from the Ottoman Archives. These records reveal various aspects, including the waqf’s expansion, the increasing employment individuals, changes in daily wages over time, in-kind payments, challenges encountered during inflationary periods, and practical measures implemented to mitigate these issues.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026Fungi-Derived Food Additives and Flavors
Arpa Zemzemoğlu, Tuba Eda; Eker, Tülin
The growing global population, the decline in edible food sources, technological advancements, and limited time have led to significant changes in society's eating habits. The increasing preference for ready-to-eat and semi-prepared foods has also resulted in higher consumption of food additives. In today's conditions, food additives are used at various stages of the food supply chain, from farm to fork, for different purposes. However, excessive intake of food additives may have negative health effects. For this reason, there has been a growing interest in natural food additives in recent years. Due to their functional properties, edible mushrooms are widely used as versatile ingredients in food product development. This chapter aims to determine the potential of edible mushrooms as food additives. Edible mushrooms can be used as meat substitutes in various food products, reducing fat and animal protein content while increasing dietary fiber and amino acid levels. When used as fat replacers, they lower fat levels in processed foods and enhance sensory properties. When incorporated as flour substitutes in baked goods, they boost dietary fiber, protein content, and antioxidant capacity. Additionally, mushrooms act as natural salt and phosphate substitutes, reducing sodium levels in meat products and replacing synthetic additives while maintaining sensory acceptability and product quality. Mushrooms also have great potential as natural colorants. Their natural origin, low-cost and high-yield production, and wide color spectrum make them suitable for use as food additives. These multifunctional roles of edible mushrooms highlight their potential to enhance nutritional profiles and promote sustainability in food formulations.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026A Policy-Aligned Integrated Index Framework for Environmental Impact Assessment Monitoring and Reporting Using the Best Worst Method
Şimşek, Aybala; Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır
Environmental Impact Assessment generates growing volumes of monitoring data, yet reporting still tends to treat indicators as separate signals rather than parts of a coherent evaluative structure. This chapter responds to that gap by developing a policy-aligned integrated index for monitoring and reporting in EIA. The proposed framework links environmental indicators to ESG themes, SDG targets, and European Green Deal priorities, then uses the Best Worst Method to derive transparent and defensible weights. Rather than presenting the index as a substitute for detailed evidence, the chapter treats it as a structured synthesis that can clarify how monitoring results relate to policy commitments and reporting needs. An illustrative application shows how the framework can organise indicators, support interpretation, and remain sensitive to alternative weighting choices. The chapter concludes by outlining the practical value and limits of using integrated indices in EIA contexts.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026Prioritising Digital Talent Initiatives in Universities: Evidence From Turkey
Şimşek, Tuğçe; Şimşek, Aybala; Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır
Universities are under growing pressure to advance digital transformation, yet priorities in digital talent management often remain unclear. This chapter develops a document-based multi-criteria decision framework to identify and compare such priorities across universities of different institutional scale in Türkiye. Drawing on public strategic plans, quality reports, distance education documentation, and staff development texts from Anadolu, Sakarya, and Tarsus Universities, the study constructs a decision matrix covering three initiatives and six evaluation criteria. Criterion weights are calculated through entropy, and initiative rankings are generated with TOPSIS. The findings show that digital infrastructure support has the strongest discriminating power. Strengthening distance education and LMS infrastructure emerges as the top priority, followed by a needs-based in-service training system and a digital competence development programme. The chapter offers a transparent and transferable framework for setting scale-sensitive digital transformation priorities in higher education.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026Catalytic Nanocomposites in Oxidative on Adsorptive Delsulfurization Process: A Comprehensive Review
Altuner, Elif Esra; Bozbeyoglu, Pinar; Özkan, Vildan; Ozkan, Abdullah
Humanity's need for energy is an undeniable fact, and this reality is increasing day by day. To meet its growing energy needs, humanity has turned to fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are fuels derived from animal and plant fossils formed over millions of years. However, the excessive use of fossil fuels for energy needs has created a dangerous situation that threatens to deplete fossil fuel reserves. Furthermore, the burning of fossil fuels releases toxic emissions. These emissions cause serious health problems for living organisms and also harm the ecosystem. These gases include sulfate (SO2) and sulfur derivatives, carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxide derivatives (NOx). This chapter focuses on catalytic techniques using nanocomposite materials for the removal of SO2 and sulfur derivatives, with detailed references to relevant sources. SO2 and sulfur gases are harmful gases released by the combustion of fossil fuels. Nanocomposite production methods include sol- gel formation, gel shaping, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and physical vapor deposition (PVD), layered production, electrospinning, mechanical and ultrasonic techniques, additive manufacturing, and melting mixture. Desulfurization processes using these methods are as follows: (i) oxidative desulfurization, photocatalytic desulfurization, and absorptive- catalytic desulfurization. All techniques are explained with references to the relevant sources. This chapter provides theoretically important information for researchers working on nanotechnological catalytic studies in desulfurization.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026Control Tower-Driven Multi-Echelon Inventory Positioning in Pharmaceutical Supply Chains
Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır; Şimşek, Aybala
Pharmaceutical supply chains face high shortage risk when demand uncertainty interacts with lead-time variability, while shelf-life limits, cold-chain requirements, and quality-release delays raise the cost of both stockouts and excess inventory. This chapter proposes a control tower–driven decision-support framework for multi-echelon inventory positioning that converts visibility into actionable policies. A multi-echelon optimization module generates candidate target-stock and reorder policies across manufacturing and distribution echelons. Monte Carlo–based scenario analysis tests robustness under demand, lead-time, and disruption uncertainty. An MCDA layer then ranks policies using total cost, service level, shortage probability, expediting intensity, days of supply, and recovery time, with sensitivity analysis when weights are uncertain. The framework provides a signal-to-decision map, event-triggered policy updates, and a compact metric dictionary for shortage-risk management without proprietary field data.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026Artificial Intelligence Nanocomposite Synergy for Next-Generation Fuel Desulfurization
Kostas, Rabia Yasa; Bozbeyoglu, Pinar; Altuner, Elif Esra; Elmas, Muzaffer
Fuel desulfurization is crucial due to the harmful effects of acid rain, air pollution, and health issues associated with sulfur compounds from fossil fuel combustion. Stricter international regulations require reducing sulfur content in fuels to ultra- low levels (<15 ppm), which current hydrodesulfurization (HDS) technology struggles to achieve due to high energy costs and inefficiencies with refractory aromatic sulfur compounds, such as dibenzothiophene (DBT). This gap in technology is driving the development of new solutions. This study explores the integration of materials science, chemical engineering, and artificial intelligence (AI) to meet ultra- low sulfur targets. It highlights alternative strategies, such as adsorptive (ADS) and oxidative (ODS) desulfurization, using advanced nanocomposite materials, including MetalOrganic Frameworks (MOFs), graphene hybrids, and zeolites. These innovative materials focus on “precision targeting” and “molecular recognition,” offering greater efficiency under milder conditions compared to traditional HDS methods AI and computational science are crucial for identifying the most suitable materials among a vast array of candidates. Combining Density Functional Theory (DFT) with Machine Learning (ML) accelerates material discovery by transitioning from a trial- and- error approach to an “inverse design” method. Successful AI tools, including Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Genetic Algorithms (GAs), have been proven effective in optimising desulfurization processes through real- world examples. In summary, achieving cleaner fuels requires innovative materials guided by AI. The study also addresses the challenges of scaling this interdisciplinary approach and envisions the potential for transforming desulfurization from a cost centre into a profit centre through precise molecular separation.

Topal, Coşkun; Bülbül, Berke; Maden, Nafiz
Since the 19thcentury, Britishoilinterests and geopoliticalbalancing against Russia positionedIran as a criticalbuffer zone. The Anglo-American-backed1953Operation Ajax generateda traumatic collective memory that formedthe ideological foundation of Iranian foreign policy after the 1979 Revolution. In the post-revolutionary era, Tehran transitioned into a security-oriented state, adopting severe anti-imperialist rhetoric against US and UK. Confronting US economic sanctions, “rogue state” labeling, andnuclearcounter-pressures, Iranbuiltasymmetricresistancemechanisms through the “Shia Crescent” and regional proxy networks. Meanwhile, diplomatic crises with UK, such as the Salman Rushdie affair, further hardened this defensive stance. This study examines how Iran transforms Anglo-American threat perceptions into a source of regime legitimacy and strategic autonomy.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026Privacy, Fairness, and Model Risk Governance in Sustainable People Analytics
Şimşek, Tuğçe; Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır
Whilst sustainability targets are driving organisations to make more intensive use of human data, this trend is transforming HR analytics from a reporting tool into a component of decision-making architecture. This transformation is expanding the scope of data collection, increasing the visibility of employees, and intertwining privacy, fairness, perceptions of surveillance, and model risk within the same process. This study addresses the question of how this interplay can be managed at the project level. A literature review has been combined with an analysis of publicly available corporate documents, from which a compact toolkit for sustainable HR analytics has been derived. The toolkit is structured around defining project boundaries, documenting data and model assumptions, matching risks with controls, and ensuring transparency and human oversight. In this way, the chapter provides a practical framework that ensures analytical capacity is considered alongside organisational legitimacy and employee trust.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026Green-Synthesized Nanocomposites for Sustainable Fuel Desulfurization: Advances and Challenges
Ozkan, Abdullah; Ozkan, Vildan; Bozbeyoglu, Pinar; Altuner, Elif Esra
The mounting global demand for energy signifies that we must depend on fossil fuels, which engenders environmental degradation and precipitates the emission of substantial quantities of sulfur oxides (SOx). Protecting themselves from environmental pollution is a top priority for many countries. Proper removal of sulfur- containing compounds from fossil fuels is becoming a major focus. Fuels such as diesel, fuel oil, and gasoline are particularly important in this regard. Fuels such as diesel, fuel oil, and gasoline are particularly important in this regard. The numerous negative consequences of traditional hydrodesulfurization (HDS) methods are what researchers focus on, and these methods are limited. Some examples of these negative effects include higher costs, the use of too much pressure and temperature, and using too much hydrogen. Scientific studies show that biosourced nanocomposite materials are good for desulfurization methods because they can reduce the potential negative consequences. Using raw materials such as microorganisms, biopolymers, and plant extracts is one of the most important ways to increase energy efficiency and eliminate chemical emissions. The large surface areas, enhanced active site homogeneity, and diverse functional groups of nanocomposite materials obtained from such biosourced raw materials make them promising candidates for use in adsorptive and oxidative desulfurization processes. Metal- metal oxide (Fe, Ni, Cu, TiO2) and carbon- based (graphene, carbon nanotube, and biochar- supported) nanocomposites are particularly preferred for achieving high sulfur removal with low energy consumption. The provision of information on the production methods, chemical properties, sulfur removal methods, and recent scientific research on biosourced nanocomposites is the purpose of this section. In addition, the environmental benefits, economic benefits, and potential roles of biosourced materials in alternative energy systems are discussed.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Design and Optimization of BioNanocomposites for Biomedical and Environmental Applications
Bozbeyoglu, Pinar; Kostas, Rabia Yasa; Altuner, Elif Esra; Elmas, Muzaffer
Bio-nanocomposites, produced from renewable resources, stand out as one of the promising next-generation material classes for both biomedical and environmental applications due to their biocompatible and biodegradable structures. However, the vast and complex design space of these materials, which depends on numerous variables including the type of biopolymer matrix and the type and concentration of the nanostructured filler, makes their optimization quite challenging with traditional “trial-and-error” based research methods. This study provides a general overview of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based methodology that holds the potential to overcome this complexity. In this context, the limitations of the traditional “forward screening” approach are discussed, and the “inverse design” paradigm, based on the idea of “designing a material with desired properties,” is proposed as a solution. The study outlines the potential roles of various AI tools in this field, from supervised learning models to deep learning approaches and optimisation algorithms. This theoretical framework is substantiated by practical case studies that range from drug delivery to sustainable packaging. The case studies demonstrate how AI not only enables the prediction of properties but also facilitates strategically developing materials for a particular function, thereby accelerating the discovery process. Finally, current challenges, such as data scarcity and the interpretability of models, are addressed, and future visions to overcome these obstacles, including physics-informed AI, autonomous discovery platforms, and human-AI partnerships, are discussed. It is concluded that this synergy has the capacity to stimulate a new era of innovation in sustainable materials science.

The relationship between environmental protection expenditures and income inequality is undoubtedly a critical issue in terms of social justice and sustainable development. In societies with high income inequality, environmental protection expenditures are generally lower. This is because low-income individuals tend to have less motivation to develop awareness of environmental issues or to support environmental protection policies. On the other hand, in societies where income is more equitably distributed, environmental protection expenditures tend to increase. A key factor behind this is that a larger segment of society views environmental.
