- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3Cardiovascular Findings and Effects of Caffeine on Experimental Hypothyroidism
Yuksel, Duygu; Ozmen, Ozlem
Background: Thyroid hormone deficiencies can disrupt organ functions, significantly impacting the cardiovascular system. Recently, the effects of thyroid hormones on the heart have garnered increased attention. However, most studies are conducted on humans using clinical data, while cellular-level and experimental studies remain limited. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the cardiovascular implications of hypothyroidism and evaluate the impact of caffeine on cardiac health in rats induced with hypothyroidism using propylthiouracil (PTU). Methods: The study involved 60 rats divided into six groups. Group 1 served as the untreated control. Group 2 received PTU for two months to induce hypothyroidism. Group 3 received PTU for one month, followed by caffeine for one month. Group 4 received caffeine for two months. Group 5 received both PTU and caffeine simultaneously for two months. Group 6 received PTU for one month, followed by one month under normal conditions. Results: During necropsy, normal thyroid glands were observed in Groups 1, 4, and 6, enlarged thyroids in Group 2, and smaller thyroids in Groups 3 and 5. Microscopic examination revealed varying thyroid histologies: Group 2 showed significant epithelial cell proliferation and absent colloid, while Groups 3, 5, and 6 had altered yet colloid-containing acini. Macroscopic inspection of hearts appeared normal across all groups. However, histopathological examination revealed significant hyperemia and microhemorrhages in Group 2, contrasting with normal findings in other groups. Immunohistochemical analysis indicated reduced cardiac troponin expression in Group 2, while other groups maintained prominent expression. Additionally, Group 2 displayed increased serum TSH levels and decreased T3 and T4 levels. Conclusion: The findings suggest that administering caffeine alongside or after PTU treatment in rats with experimentally induced hypothyroidism may ameliorate thyroid and cardiac irregularities. This study indicates caffeine's potential in mitigating the adverse effects of hypothyroidism on thyroid and heart health.

Türkkan, Tuğba; Hatipoğlu, Ertuğrul
This study aims to determine the extent of the psychological effects of the Kahramanmaraş earthquake disaster, which is widely regarded as one of the most significant disasters of the century, on young people based on their direct or indirect exposure and to investigate the impact of these issues on life satisfaction. Data were collected from 337 individuals who were continuing their advanced education at a state university in Turkey, using a demographic information form, life satisfaction scale and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 21. In the analysis of the data, t-test, Pearson correlation test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were employed. The results of the analyses indicated that as the intensity of exposure to disaster news increased, the stress, depression, and anxiety levels of the participants also increased. Individuals who experienced the earthquake personally and participated in volunteer aid activities demonstrated higher depression and anxiety scores and DASS21 scale total scores than those who did not directly experience the earthquake but followed the news and those whose relatives experienced the earthquake. There was no significant difference in the intensity of following earthquake news between men and women among the participants. However, it was determined that the intensity of following earthquake news from media and social media tools positively and significantly predicted the life satisfaction of the participants. These findings provide insights for future mental health interventions and social work practices for young people affected by the earthquake.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3MOHO DEPTH IN THE SOUTH CASPIAN BASIN ESTIMATED FROM GRAVITY FIELD DATA AND LOCATION OF HYDROCARBON RESERVOIRS
Kadirov, F.A.; Safarov, R.T.; Gahramanov, M.R.; Maden, N.M.
The South Caspian Basin (SCB) is a geologically complex and diverse region of significant scientific interest due to its hydrocarbon resources and intricate crustal structure. This study provides an updated interpretation of the SCB’s crustal configuration using gravity-derived data, with particular emphasis on delineating Moho depth and the influence of its variations on petroleum basins. The crustal structure of the basin is assessed using Bouguer gravity anomalies, incorporating terrestrial and marine gravity measurements, and processed with spectral analysis methods. Power spectrum analysis was applied to estimate the depths of subsurface mass distributions affecting the gravity field, enabling separation of regional and residual anomalies and providing an initial reference depth of Moho. These results served as input for Parker–Oldenburg inversion, an iterative Fourier-based technique used to model the Moho surface by minimizing discrepancies between observed and calculated gravity anomalies. The integrated approach reveals substantial lateral variations in Moho depth, ranging from approximately 42 km in the Absheron–Prebalkhan zone to about 29 km in the central SCB. Analysis of spatial correlations indicates that oil and gas reservoirs are primarily located in areas where the Moho surface is deeper and along gradient zones marking abrupt depth changes. These findings enhance understanding of the complex tectonic evolution of the SCB and provide valuable constraints for predicting potential hydrocarbon locations in this tectonically active and data-scarce region.

Tuncer, Metin; Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Turan, Şeyma; Khorshtd, Leyla
Background: Nurse migration contributes to the nursing shortage in developing countries. Understanding nurses' attitudes toward migration and related factors is crucial for policy-making and healthcare workforce planning in Turkey. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nurses' attitudes toward migration and their life satisfaction in Turkey. Methods: The study included working nurses with social media accounts on a social media platform in Turkey who followed nursing-related content. A sample of 423 nurses completed an online survey. Independent variables included nurses' sociodemographic characteristics and inclination toward migration, while dependent variables were life satisfaction and migration attitude levels. Data were collected via an online questionnaire, incorporating the Brain Drain Attitude Scale (BDAS) and Life Satisfaction Scale (LSS), between April and May 2023. Results: The study found a negative correlation between nurses' life satisfaction levels and their attitudes toward migration (r = −.349, p <.001). Nurses dissatisfied with their profession (F = 6.575, p <.05), lacking professional support (F = 8.641, p <.05), and lacking social support (F = 6.307, p <.05) scored higher on the BDAS. Conversely, those satisfied with their profession (F = 31.455, p <.05), receiving professional support (F = 26.307, p <.05), and social support (F = 33.990, p <.05) scored higher on the LSS. Conclusion and implications for nursing: The study revealed that decreased life satisfaction among nurses in Turkey correlates with increased migration attitudes. These results underscore the need for strategies to enhance nurses' job satisfaction and support systems to mitigate migration tendencies. This study contributes valuable insights into the high inclination of Turkish nurses toward emigration.

In this study, the effects of cow, buffalo, ewe, and goat milk on the microbiological, physicochemical, sensory properties, and volatile component profile of kefir were examined during storage. Key microbial counts, including lactic cocci, lactic bacilli, and yeast, varied among kefirs, with lactic bacilli and lactic cocci decreasing over time, while yeast counts increased. The titratable acidity ranged from 1.12 to 1.16%, and pH values varied between 4.51 and 4.83. Sensory analysis showed that cow milk kefir received the highest consumer appreciation, while goat milk kefir was least favored. Notably, ewe milk kefir contained the highest benzoic acid content. Principal component analysis identified distinct clusters in the volatile profiles of the kefirs. Our results suggest that buffalo and ewe milk kefirs may be viable alternatives to cow milk kefir, with potential for consumer acceptance based on sensory properties.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1The Memory Destruction and Reconstruction Games within the Scope of Persianization Politics in Iran
Dinç, Artum
This research examines how collective memory management has influenced the images, symbols, historical artifacts, names, and language of Turkish culture in Iran since 1925 and how Turks for anti-discrimination have responded. This study employed a qualitative research model, with data collected through a relevant literature review and interviews. The sample was selected from Turks who have expressed reactions to the Persianization process. The findings were obtained through open and axial coding of the collected data and an inductive inquiry strategy. The findings revealed that, in line with the assimilation (Persianization) policies implemented in Iran, historiography and memory management practices based on Persian nationalism have been perpetuated against Turkish identity and its collective memory. This process is carried out by erasure, forgetting, amnesia, annulment, obsoletion, abandoning, humiliating, and banning symbolic representations, historical artifacts, names, and the language belonging to Turkish culture. The findings also demonstrated that Turks have not remained passive in the face of these practices but have actively sought to commemorate and preserve their language, names, historical events, artifacts, and heroes through artistic events, ceremonies, sports competitions, new media, legal channels and protests. From the selective coding of the findings, it can be concluded that the management of collective memory based on essentialist, monist, exclusionary and supremacist Persian nationalism are nowadays being questioned and debated in intellectual discussion, political competition and everyday life scenes. It can be concluded that the attitude of the political authority is not towards recognizing ethnonational diversity and their rights in Iran, but towards maintaining uncertainty.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1The Effect of Music on Fear and Anxiety of Children During Tomography: A Randomized Controlled Double-Blind Study
Kurudirek, Fatma; Demir Barbak, Zülbiye; Demir İmamoğlu, Zeynep; Çiftci, Kamile; Delice, Orhan
Aim: This study was conducted to determine the effect of a musical intervention during computed tomography (CT) on fear, anxiety and vital signs of children. Method: This randomized, double-blind controlled trial was conducted according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Studies (CONSORT) guidelines. The study sample included children aged between 6 and 10 years who met the inclusion criteria and underwent CT scan in the emergency department of a public hospital in eastern Turkey between 18 April and 20 May 2023. The research was completed with a total of 60 children, randomized to one of two groups. The nursing intervention of the study was playing music. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the Child and Family Information Form, the Children's Fear Scale (CFS), Children's Anxiety Meter-State (CAM-S) and the Vital Signs Monitoring Form (pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation). Ethical principles were followed in the research. Results: The level of fear, anxiety, pulse rate and respiratory rate of the children in the musical intervention group during CT scanning were lower than in the control group (p < 0.05). No difference was found between the groups in terms of oxygen saturation (p < 0.05). Conclusion and Recommendations for Implementation: The results of this study suggest that musical intervention during CT scanning in children is effective in reducing the level of fear and anxiety and stabilizing vital signs. By using such nonpharmacologic methods, nurses can provide support to children and alleviate emotional difficulties during procedures. Trial Registration: NCT06086509. Summary: What is already known about this topic? Music therapy is recognized as an effective nonpharmacologic intervention to reduce fear and anxiety in paediatric patients undergoing medical procedures. Previous studies have shown that musical intervention during CT scans can calm children, potentially reducing the need for sedation and improving compliance. Knowledge gaps remain regarding the specific effects of music on physiological parameters like pulse and respiratory rates during paediatric CT scans. What this paper adds? This study demonstrates that musical intervention during CT scans significantly reduces fear and anxiety levels in children aged 6–10 years. The research findings show that music intervention can also stabilize vital signs, such as pulse and respiratory rates, during CT scans, suggesting a relaxed physiological state. The results support the idea that incorporating music into paediatric imaging procedures can enhance patient comfort and improve the quality of the imaging process by encouraging children to remain still. The implications of this paper: Incorporating music therapy into routine paediatric imaging procedures can reduce anxiety, improve patient cooperation and potentially reduce the need for sedatives. Future research could explore the optimal types of music, volume levels and delivery methods to maximize the calming effects on children during various medical procedures. Training programs for paediatric healthcare providers can include education on the benefits of nonpharmacologic interventions, like music therapy, to reduce anxiety and improve patient outcomes in clinical settings.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Gender Analysis in the Islamic Law-Based Ecofeminism Movement for Ecosystem Protection
Malik, Ihyani; Karimullah, Suud Sarim; Okur, Hüseyin; Rahman
The ecological crisis reflects the failure of ethical relations between humans, nature, and power structures, thus demanding a review of the paradigm of domination that underlies these relations. This study analyzed how the principles of Islamic law can be integrated with the ideas of ecofeminism to create more inclusive and sustainable environmental policies. The study used an intersectional approach with comprehensive literature analysis and gender analysis frameworks to understand how social identity affects women's participation in ecofeminism and environmental protection based on Islamic law principles. The results of the study state that the integration of the principles of ecofeminism and Islamic law has excellent potential to create fair and sustainable environmental policies based on justice (‘adl), balance (mizan), and responsibility (khalifah). The concept of khalifah affirms the role of humans as custodians of the earth, provides a theological reason to support environmental conservation and inspires collective responsibility, including the role of women as essential agents. Programs that give women access to land and natural resources increase their participation in agriculture and environmental management, reduce poverty, and strengthen their role as agents of change. However, challenges such as resistance from patriarchal communities, lack of financial and technical support, and the need for ongoing education and training must be overcome. Technology also plays a crucial role in supporting inclusive and sustainable environmental policies.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Internet Addiction Among Turkish Adults: The Role of Motives for Internet Use
Kaya, Feridun; Rosell, Javiera; Odacı, Hatice; Vergés, Alvaro; Türkkan, Tuğba
The use of the internet has become an increasingly integral part of individuals’ daily lives, bringing negative consequences such as internet addiction. Understanding the motivations behind internet use is crucial for preventing addiction and developing effective intervention strategies. The objectives of this study are to test the validity and reliability of the Questionnaire of Internet Use Motives (MUI) among Turkish adults and to investigate the predictive effects of socio-demographic variables and internet use motivations on internet addiction. The study was conducted with a sample of 640 adults selected through convenience sampling at two different time points. The majority of participants were women, highly educated, and from a middle socioeconomic background. Data were collected using a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Questionnaire of Internet Use Motives (MUI), and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). To evaluate the structural validity of the scale, a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was performed. Additionally, measurement invariance across genders was examined, and Hierarchical Multiple Linear Regression Analyses were conducted to identify predictors of internet addiction. CFA confirmed the structural validity of the MUI, revealing a five-factor structure with a good fit to the data. The five identified motives were enhancement, coping, social, conformity, and utility. The analyses also demonstrated that the scale possesses convergent and discriminant validity, as well as high reliability. Furthermore, the instrument exhibited measurement invariance across genders. Significant predictors of internet addiction included educational level, socioeconomic status, and the enhancement, social, coping, and conformity motives. The validated MUI provides a robust tool for assessing internet use motives in Turkish adults, offering a foundation for future research and intervention development. Addressing psychological motives such as enhancement, social, coping, and conformity in prevention and treatment strategies may reinforce efforts to mitigate problematic internet use.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2The effect of disaster resilience and trauma exposure on PTSD, depression, and sleep disorder among healthcare workers involved in the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes (2023): a structural equation model
Kiymis, Ibrahim; Yuce, Damla Nur
Healthcare workers (HCWs) serve as the cornerstone of health services, which are among the primary needs during disasters. The chaotic environment caused by disasters can lead to mental health disorders in HCWs, similar to those experienced by disaster victims. Experiencing mental health disorders can hinder HCW’s professional approach to intervention. HCWs should not be overlooked for the possibility of experiencing mental health disorders while providing healthcare services during disasters. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of psychological resilience and trauma exposure on PTSD, depression, and sleep disorders among HCWs involved in the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes, which were Turkey’s most devastating earthquakes. In this quantitative research, a survey technique was employed, reaching 642 hCWs involved in the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the impact of variables on each other. According to the SEM results, trauma exposure in the HCWs had a significant and positive effect on PTSD (β=+0.899, p = 0.000), depression (β=+0.685, p = 0.000), and sleep disorders (β=+0.603, p = 0.000). Psychological resilience had a significant and negative effect on PTSD (β=−0.278, p = 0.004) and depression (β=−0.322, p = 0.008). Surprisingly, psychological resilience had a significant and positive effect on sleep disorders (β=+0.692, p = 0.000). In conclusion, while trauma exposure led to PTSD, depression, and sleep disorders in the HCWs, psychological resilience mitigated PTSD and depression. Unexpectedly, psychological resilience increased sleep disorders. For this reason, it is recommended that future studies investigate in detail the reasons why HCWs experience sleep disorders and examine them in depth.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Algebraic and topological foundations of non-Newtonian analysis via generator functions
Civgin, Emre; Yalcin, Numan
In this paper we explored the algebraic and topological underpinnings of non-Newtonian analysis through the framework of a generator function α. We introduced the α-number systems and the associated arithmetic operations, and we established the corresponding algebraic structures, including groups, fields, and vector spaces defined over α-real numbers. On the topological side, we developed the notions of α-metric spaces and α-sequences, thereby extending core concepts of analysis to the non-Newtonian setting. The study culminates with the formulation of star (*) analysis, which provides a systematic mechanism for transitioning between distinct arithmetic systems, together with a rigorous treatment of *-vector spaces and linear operators.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Advancing sea level anomaly modeling in the black sea with LSTM Auto-Encoders: A novel approach
Yavuzdoğan, A.; Tanir Kayıkçı, E.
Rising sea levels pose significant risks to coastal communities and ecosystems. Accurate modeling of sea level changes is crucial for effective environmental management and disaster mitigation. Machine learning methods are emerging as an important asset in improving sea level predictions and understanding the impacts of climate change. Especially, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models have emerged as a powerful tool for sea level anomaly modeling, but there is an increasing need for more advanced models in this area. This study enhances existing methodologies by introducing a novel approach using an LSTM Auto-Encoder model, designed to compress input data into a lower-dimensional latent space before reconstructing it, thereby capturing complex temporal dependencies and anomalies effectively. We compared LSTM Auto-Encoder model performance with that of a Stacked LSTM network, which learns complex temporal patterns through multiple layers, and a traditional damped-persistence statistical model. Our results demonstrate that the LSTM Auto-Encoder model not only outperformed these models in predicting sea level anomalies across various lead times but also exhibited superior generalization capabilities across both satellite altimeter and in-situ data. These findings highlight the potential of the LSTM Auto-Encoder model as a powerful tool in coastal management and climate change studies, underscoring the critical role of advanced machine learning techniques in enhancing our predictive abilities and informing disaster preparedness strategies.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Unveiling the bioactive potential of Scabiosa rotata M. Bieb fruits: a landmark study on cytotoxic, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry profiling and molecular docking
Yildirim, Aybeniz; Celep, Inci Kurt; Gül, Abdulkadir; Eter, Özge Soylu; Baǧcl, Eyüp
The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antibacterial activities of ethanol extract (SRE) and its hexane (SRH), chloroform (SRC), ethyl acetate (SREA), and aqueous ethanol (SRAE) sub-extracts obtained from the fruits of Scabiosa rotata M. Bieb. Molecular docking studies were also performed to evaluate the interactions of the most active sub-extract with the human mitochondrial ABC transporter (ABCB10) protein, plays an important role in cellular oxidative stress regulation and mitochondrial function. Total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) contents and antioxidant radical scavenging activities (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl [DPPH] and 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6 sulfonic acid [ABTS]) of all extracts were determined. Cytotoxic activity was evaluated on different cell lines, such as HepG2 (liver cancer), MCF-7 (breast cancer), and HeLa (cervical cancer) cells. Antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus. SREA showed the best antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 54.20 μg/ml and 48.56 μg/ml for DPPH and ABTS, respectively, and also had high TPC (499.06 mg GA/g) and TFC (327.45 mg QE/g). Furthermore, SREA showed significant cytotoxicity comparable to cisplatin with IC50 values of 51.29, 51.41, and 52.89 μg/ml for HepG2, MCF-7, and HeLa cells, respectively. However, none of the extracts showed antibacterial activity. The analysis using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) on SREA found that the main phenolic compounds are chlorogenic acid, hesperidin, quinic acid, and isoorientin. Molecular docking of the major compounds showed that chlorogenic acid (2.21 mM) exhibited the strongest binding affinity, followed by hesperidin (5.83 mM), quinic acid (8.86 mM), and isoorientin (13 mM). These findings indicate the potential of SREA to be used as a natural antioxidant and anticancer agent.

Karahan, Selim; Guler, Cengiz
In this study, under laboratory conditions, hazelnut husk and astragalus plant were mixed separately into black pine wood chips, and multi-purpose boards were produced from the obtained chips with urea formaldehyde glue. After the hazelnut husk and astragalus plant were dried and ground, they were added to the chip and glue mixture in certain proportions. Hazelnut husk mixture ratios were applied as 100 %; 0 %, 75 %; 25 %, 50 %; 50 %, 25 %; 75 %, 0 %; 100 % to black pine wood chip in the particle board mixture. These ratios were made in the same way for the astragalus plant. From these mixtures, chipboard blanks of 16 mm thickness and densities between 0,68 g/cm3 and 0,72 g/cm3 were produced. Density, moisture content, thickness increase, water intake, bending strength, modulus of elasticity in bending and tensile strength perpendicular to the surface were tested in physical and mechanical experiments. According to the results obtained, as the participation rate of hazelnut shells and astragalus increased, the durability properties of the panels decreased. At the same time, it shows that the technological properties of the panels produced by adding up to 25 % astragalus plant and hazelnut shells to the mixture comply with the standards.

Ürkek, Bayram
Ice cream is classified as a dairy product or frozen dessert. Various fruits have been incorporated into ice cream formulations to enhance their quality and nutritional properties. In this study, ice creams were prepared with barberry at four different concentrations (0%, 5%, 10% and 15%). The physicochemical, rheological characteristics, antioxidant activity, mineral content and sensory properties of the samples were examined. With the addition of barberry, the dry matter (DM), acidity and overrun values increased, while pH and fat content decreased. The viscosity and consistency coefficients were highest in the samples containing 10% and 15% barberry. All samples exhibited pseudoplastic flow behavior. The colorimetric parameters showed significant differences among the samples, except for the C* value. The sample with 5% barberry had higher levels of Ca, Na, Mg, S, Fe and Zn compared to the other barberry-added samples. The sample containing 15% barberry demonstrated the highest DPPH scavenging activity (22.15 μg/mL) and total phenolic content (TPC) (1474.04 mg GAE/g), while the sample without barberry had the lowest values (143.19 μg/mL and 149.48 mg GAE/g, respectively). Additionally, the control sample received the lowest scores for gumming structure, texture, melting in the mouth, resistance to melting and overall acceptability. These findings suggest that incorporating 10% barberry could enhance the quality and nutritional value of ice creams.
