- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ4Single production of the excited muons at the SPPC-based ultimate μp collider
Cąliskan, Abdullatif
Single production potential of the excited muons at the SPPC-based ultimate muon-proton collider with center-of-mass energy of 116.6 TeV was analyzed. We calculated the production cross-sections and the decay widths of the excited muons with the process of μp → μX → γμX. We obtained the normalized transverse momentum and pseudorapidity distributions of the final-state particles to attain the kinematical cuts for the discovery of the excited muons. With these cuts, we determined the mass limits. It was shown that the discovery limits on the mass of the excited muons are 19.6 and 10.1 TeV for λ = mμ and λ=50 TeV, respectively.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ1Resistance of Axially Loaded T- and X-Joints of Elliptical Hollow Sections at Elevated Temperatures – A Finite Element Study
Ozyurt, E.; Wang, Y.C.
This study presents the results of a numerical study to develop a method to calculate the static strength of welded Elliptical Hollow Section (EHS) joints at elevated temperatures. Extensive numerical simulations using the non-linear finite element package, ABAQUS v6.14–1 on EHS T- and X-joints under brace axial compression or tension and pre-stress in chord member with different type of joint orientations at elevated temperatures over a wide range of diameter ratio have been conducted. The adjustments required to be made to the equations of joint resistance under ambient temperature conditions for estimating joint resistance at elevated temperature conditions are investigated in this study. The FE simulation results have been compared with the calculation results of a number of existing methods at ambient temperature. It has been found that the method proposed by Packer et al. gives the best agreement with the authors' simulation results at ambient temperature. At elevated temperatures, for T- and X- joints with braces in compression welded to the wide sides of chords, replacing the ambient temperature yield strength of steel by the elevated temperature value in the current design method overestimates the ultimate load carrying capacity of axially loaded EHS T- and X-joints due to inability of the ambient temperature calculation equations to take into consideration EHS flattening at high temperatures. For these cases, it is recommended to calculate the joint strength reduction factor at elevated temperatures according to the Young's modulus of steel.

- BildiriAçık Erişim2018Daily and monthly module temperature variation for 9 different modules
Özden, Talat; Tolgay, Doga; Akinoglu, Bulent G.
One of the main parameter affecting the efficiency of PV modules is the module temperature. In this respect, outdoor testing of modules is very important to determine the temperature dependent performances and degradation rates. In this work, we analyzed the module temperatures of 9 different modules tested in the outdoor testing facility of METU-GUNAM, Ankara (latitude ∼40°N, in Central Anatolia and the climate is dry continental). The tested module types are two CIS (identical), one μc-Si/a-Si, one Poly-Si, three Mono-Si (two identical), one HIT and one bifacial. The module temperatures can reach up to 76°C while the ambient is around 39 °C during summer days. Monthly average module temperatures can reach up to 33.7°C (CIS) while the monthly average ambient is at 26.0°C and drops down to 1 °C while average ambient temperature is about the same as average module temperature. The results showed that the monthly averages of module temperatures differences are maximum during summer (∼3.5°C) and minimum during winter (1.1°C). It is interesting that the two CIS modules have the highest monthly average module temperature and although they are supposed to be identical their temperatures differ significantly. Bifacial and HIT module temperatures are lower than the Mono-Si modules. One of the two identical Mono-Si modules was not cleaned and its module temperature is always lower than the one that was cleaned periodically, as expected. In this work, we also present the results and discussions on the spatial variations of measured module temperatures of PV panels.

Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Karahasan, Olguhan Şevket; Genç, Ali Fuat; Okur, Fatih Yesevi; Günaydin, Murat; Adanur, Süleyman
Model updating is of significant importance in the actual analyses of real structures. The differences between experimental and numerical dynamic characteristics can be minimized by means of this procedure. This procedure can be carried out using two approaches, namely, the manual model updating and the global or local automated model updating. The local model updating is a convenient tool for all kind of structures capable of minimizing the differences mentioned previously nearly to zero and also of identifying the damage locations and monitoring structural integrity. In this way, current realistic behavior of structures can be represented by updated finite element models. This paper describes a Reinforced Concrete (RC) frame model, its ambient vibration testing, finite element modeling and sensitivity-based automated model updating. The RC frame is of ½ geometric scale with two floors and two bays in the longitudinal direction. It was built and then subjected to ambient vibration tests to determine experimentally their dynamic characteristics. Additionally, the finite element computer program ANSYS was used to determine its initial numerical dynamic characteristics. The experimental and numerical results were compared resulting in maximum differences of 38.38% between them. To minimize these differences, the finite element model was updated using the global and local automated approach using a sensitivity-based analyses with some uncertain parameters. The differences were finally reduced to 4.4% and 0.21% by the global and the local automated model updatings, respectively. It is concluded that sensitivity-based automated updating is a very effective procedure to obtain the updated finite element model which can reflect the current behavior of a structure.

Düzgün, Azer Özad; Saral, Ayşegül
A carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strain was isolated in Turkey in 2012 and blaNDM-1 and blaOXA-48 genes were observed in this strain. The aim of this study was to investigate transferability of plasmid bearing blaOXA-48 in K. pneumoniae and to use whole-genome sequencing in order to understand the genetic context of plasmid. K. pneumoniae strain was used as donor in conjugation experiments. Antibiotic susceptibility profile of selected transconjugant was determined. Plasmid was isolated from transconjugant colony and was named as pKPT. Complete sequencing of the pKPT was conducted using a next-generation sequencing. Annotation of the contigs was performed using the Geneious R9, followed by finding open reading frames (ORFs) with selected web-based tools. BLAST analysis was performed at the NCBI BLAST server to determine genes showing more than 90% similarity with these ORFs. Results of antibiotic susceptibility test showed that transconjugant colony was resistant to ampicillin/ sulbactam, piperacillin, and piperacillin/tazobactam. The pKPT plasmid had a length of 45,217 bp and an average G + C content of 49%. Blast analysis revealed that pKPT was included in the IncL/M incompatibility group. The pKPT was found to contain blaOXA-48 within Tn1999.2 transposon without any other antibiotic resistance gene.

Akyürek, Eda Feyza; Geliş, Kadir; Şahin, Bayram; Manay, Eyüphan
Nanofluids are a novel class of heat transfer suspensions of metallic or nonmetallic nanopowders with a size of less than 100 nm in base fluids and they can increase heat transfer potential of the base fluids in various applications. In the last decade, nanofluids have become an intensive research topic because of their improved thermal properties and possible heat transfer applications. For comparison, an experiment using water as the working fluid in the heat exchanger without wire coils was also performed. Turbulent forced convection heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of Al2O3-water nanofluids in a concentric tube heat exchanger with and without wire coil turbulators were experimentally investigated in this research. Experiments effected particle volume concentrations of 0.4–0.8 to 1.2–1.6 vol% in the Reynolds number range from 4000 to 20,000. Two turbulators with the pitches of 25 mm and 39 mm were used. The average Nusselt number increased with increasing the Reynolds number and particle concentrations. Moreover, the pressure drop of the Al2O3-water nanofluid showed nearly equal to that of pure water at the same Reynolds number range. As a result, nanofluids with lower particle concentrations did not show an important influence on pressure drop change. Nonetheless, when the wire coils used in the heat exchanger, it increased pressure drop as well as the heat transfer coefficient.

Takaoğlu, Zeynep Başkan
Energy is a difficult concept to be understood by students of all levels. Thus, the aim of the study is to determine how high school students at different levels perceive the energy and related concepts. In line with this purpose, 173 students in total of which 57 ones of the 9th grade, 94 ones of the 10th grade and 22 ones of the 11th grade participated in the study in which developmental research method of descriptive research design has been conducted. Four open-ended questions about energy and related concepts have been asked to the students in the study. As a result of the study, it is concluded that the students use energy instead of work, power, repulsion and pulling concepts and they consider energy as a feature specific to living creatures and moving situations. The potential and kinetic energy types are most expressed ones. The students frequently give examples from renewable and non-renewable energy types and they classify them accordingly. It is also concluded that they don’t have enough information about conservation of energy. It is thought that this misconception among the students emerges because energy and related concepts are taught them disconnected in different lessons of different disciplines and they do not understand preconceptions about energy and related notions. It is considered that the concept networks, concept maps, and conceptual change texts will help to relate energy concepts in students' minds.

Aktaş, Ibrahim; Baricz, Árpád; Orhan, Halit
In this paper we consider some normalized Bessel, Struve, and Lommel functions of the first kind and, by using the Euler-Rayleigh inequalities for the first positive zeros of a combination of special functions, we obtain tight lower and upper bounds for the radii of starlikeness of these functions. By considering two different normalizations of Bessel and Struve functions we give some inequalities for the radii of convexity of the same functions. On the other hand, we show that the radii of univalence of some normalized Struve and Lommel functions are exactly the radii of starlikeness of the same functions. In addition, by using some ideas of Ismail and Muldoon we present some new lower and upper bounds for the zeros of derivatives of some normalized Struve and Lommel functions. The Laguerre-Pólya class of real entire functions plays an important role in our study.

Simsek, Huseyin; Derelioglu, Sera; Buyuk, Suleyman Kutalmış; Sukuroglu, Ebru Emine
The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the effect of different protective agents on the surface microhardness and morphology on enamel eroded by a cola drink. Sixty sound anterior teeth were randomly divided into five groups. The baseline surface microhardness of the enamel was measured. For demineralization procedures, all teeth were immersed in cola for 8 minutes and surface microhardness was remeasured. The five groups for remineralization procedures were defined as: Group 1: Artificial saliva, Group 2: 1.23% Acidulated Phosphate Fluoride gel (APF), Group 3: 5% NaF varnish, Group 4: Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (CPP-ACP), and Group 5: Probiotic yogurt. After each experimental procedure, a third microhardness measurement was repeated. Surface morphological changes were observed using SEM. All data were recorded for each group and statistically analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance. All tests were performed at a significance level of p < 0.05. No significant differences for baseline microhardness values were found (P> 0.05). The mean surface microhardness in all groups decreased significantly after immersion in cola (P< 0.05). After remineralization, NaF varnish and APF gel significantly increased the surface microhardness values. There were no significant increases in the surface microhardness values of artificial saliva, CPP-ACP and probiotic yogurt. This study concludes that NaF varnish is more effective in re-hardening of eroded enamel.

Tropical theileriosis caused by Theileria annulata obligate parasite that infect ruminant animals, including Bos taurus. The disease results massive economic losses in livestock production worldwide. Here we describe cloning, expression and both biochemical and structural characterization of beta enolase from Bos taurus in vitro and in silico. The interconversion of 2‑phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate was catalyzed by enolase is a metalloenzyme in glycolytic pathway and gluconeogenesis. Enolase from Bos taurus was cloned, expressed and the protein was purified at 95% purity using cobalt column by affinity chromatography. The optimum enzymatic activity was calculated at pH 6.5. For the first time in the literature, the kinetic parameters of the enzyme, Vmax and Km, were measured as 0.1141 mM/min and 0.514 mM, respectively. Besides, Bos taurus enolase 3-dimensional structure was built by homology modelling to be used in silico analyses. The interactions of the enzyme-substrate complex were elucidated by molecular dynamics simulations for 100 ns. These interactions were found to be the same as experimentally determined interactions in yeast. These results would enable further structure based drug design studies with the biochemical characterization of the host organism Bos taurus enolase enzyme in vitro and the elucidation of behavior of enzyme-substrate complex in silico.

This research aims to investigate how different landscape metrics are affected by the enhancement of the thematic classes in land cover/land use (LC/LU) maps. For this aim, three different LC/LU maps based on three different levels of CORINE (Coordination of Information on The Environment) nomenclature were created for the selected study area using GEOBIA (Geographic Object Based Image Analysis) techniques. First, second and third level LC/LU maps of the study area have five, thirteen and twenty-seven hierarchical thematic classes, respectively. High-resolution Spot 7 images with 1.5 m spatial resolution were used as the main Earth Observation data to create LC/LU maps. Additional geospatial data from open sources (OpenStreetMap and Wikimapia) were also integrated to the classification in order to identify some of the 2nd and 3rd level LC/LU classes. Classification procedure was initially conducted for Level 3 classes in which we developed decision trees to be used in object-based classification. Afterwards, Level 3 classes were merged to create Level 2 LC/LU map and then Level 2 classes were merged to create the Level 1 LC/LU map according to CORINE nomenclature. The accuracy of Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 maps are calculated as; 93.50%, 89.00%, 85.50% respectively. At the last stage, several landscape metrics such as Number of Patch (NP), Edge Density (ED), Largest Patch Index (LPI), Euclidean Nearest Neighbor Distance (ENN), Splitting Index (SPLIT) and Aggregation Index (AI) metrics and others were calculated for different level LC/LU maps and landscape metrics values were compared to analyze the impact of changing thematic details on landscape metrics. Our results show that, increasing the thematic detail allows landscape characteristics to be defined more precisely and ensure comprehensive assessment of cause and effect relationships between classes.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Investigating the relationship between sprint and jump performances with velocity and power parameters during propulsive phase of the loaded-squat jump exercise
Can, İbrahim
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between sprint and jump performance with velocity parameters in the loaded-squat jump exercise (SQ Loaded ). In accordance with this purpose, a total of 13 athletes competing in martial sports have participated in this study voluntarily. In this study, sprint tests, vertical jump (VJ), standing long jump (SLJ) tests and one repetition maximal strength test were applied. In order to determine velocity and power parameters, SQ Loaded exercise was applied by using an external load that corresponds to 40% of body weights of the subjects via an isoinertial velocity transducer (T-Force dynamic measurement system) and values of mean propulsive velocity (MPV), peak velocity (PV), mean propulsive power (MPP) and peak power (PP) were obtained. Descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation analysis and Shapiro-Wilk normality tests were used for data assessment. It has been concluded that there is no statistically significant relation between 10, 20 and 30 meter sprint times and the values of MPV (r=-,332; r=-,375; r=-,446; p>.05 respectively), PV (r=-,058; r=-,118; r=-,165; p>.05 respectively), MPP (r=-,285; r=-,482; r=-,485; p>.05 respectively) and PP (r=-,205; r=-,512; r=-,391; p>.05 respectively) during SQ Loaded exercise. In addition, while no statistically significant relation has been obtained between the VJ and SLJ values of the participants and MPV (r=,496; r =,429; p>.05 respectively) and PV (r=,300; r=,223; p>.05 respectively) values during propulsive stage of SQ Loaded exercise, it has been ascertained that there is a statistically positive and significant relation between the values of MPP(r=,620; r=,580; p>.05 respectively) and PP (r=,678; r=,572; p<.05 respectively). In conclusion, it can be suggested that lifting velocity and power values don’t have a positive effect on short sprint performance; however power values affect the vertical jump and standing long jump performances positively.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ4Mineral chemistry, whole-rock geochemistry and petrology of Eocene I-type shoshonitic plutons in the Gölköy area (Ordu, NE Turkey)
Temizel, Irfan; Abdioǧlu Yazar, Emel; Arslan, Mehmet; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aslan, Zafer
The Eocene intermediate to felsic plutons are widespread in varying sizes and compositions throughout the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt in NE Turkey. Of these, two monzonitic bodies (namely the Eriko Tepe and Göl Tepe Plutons) in the Gölköy (Ordu) area, extend nearly in the orientation of NWSE and E-W and were emplaced into the Upper Cretaceous and/or Eocene volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Petrographically, the studied monzonitic plutons are compositionally fine to medium grained monzonite, monzodiorite and subordinate quartz-monzonite. They consist of plagioclase (An35-67), K-feldspar (Or61-96), quartz, clinopyroxene (Wo28-49En35-51Fs10-25), biotite (Mg#: 0.53-0.73) ± hornblende (Mg#: 0.65-0.82), Fe-Ti oxide with monzonitic, poikilitic, perthitic, rare antirapakivi and graphic textures. Mineral thermobarometer estimations imply that the plutons were crystallized in P-T conditions of mid to shallow crustal levels. Petrochemically, these monzonitic plutons show post-collisional, I-type, metaluminous (A/CNK=0.76-0.93) and shoshonitic features. The wholerock major oxide and trace element variations suggest that fractionational crystallization played a significant role in the evolution of these monzonitic plutons. The primitive mantle-normalized trace element patterns of the studied plutons are similar to each other with enrichment in large ion lithophile elements, Th, Ce and negative Nb and Ti anomalies. Moreover, the chondrite-normalized rare earth element plots of the plutons show moderately enriched concave-shaped patterns (LaN/LuN=9.3-12.6) with negative Eu anomalies (EuN/Eu∗=0.69-0.84), all of which imply plagioclase and clinopyroxene ± hornblende fractionations during their evolution. The geochemical data suggest that the monzonitic plutons have evolved from parental magmas derived from the melts of enriched lithospheric mantle, in a post-collisional setting.
