Introduction: Anthrax is a zoonosis affecting herbivorous animals. Its agent is Bacillus anthracis and it is gram positive, aerobic or facultative anaerobic, immobile and has a capsule in the polypeptide structure. The incidence is gradually decreasing in the world and in our country. The disease is especially seen in areas where stock breeding is common. In this case series, 3 cases, one of them was mortal, took place after anthrax infected cow was eaten in February 2018 in Trabzon was shared. Case presentations: In the first case, as a result of the animal's meat was eaten, gastrointestinal anthrax and associated sepsis were seen. This patients blood culture was positive and she was died. Second case after contacting the patient who died, and third case after contacting the animal and eating its meat, diagnosed with cutaneous anthrax. Doxycycline treatment was started with cutaneous anthrax patients, these cases were recovered without any complications. Conclusion: We presented this article, to update our information about gastrointestinal anthrax and other anthrax types which are become a current issue again especially due to bioterrorism and also to keep it in mind in the differential diagnosis although it is rarely seen in our stock raising areas.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the phytochemical analysis of D. pentaphyllum and its cytotoxic activity on human cervical cancer (HeLa) cells with possible mechanisms. Total phenolic contents (TPC) and phytochemical analysis of the extract were evaluated using spectrophotometric method and RP-HPLC, respectively. The cytotoxic effect of the extract was evaluated using the MTT assay. The mechanism of the cytotoxic effect of the extract was also evaluated in terms of apoptosis, cell cycle, and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) using the fluorometric methods. The TPC of the extract was calculated as 68.9 +/- 2.3 mg gallic acid equivalent per g sample and quercetin was determined as the major phenolic in the extract. The extract showed a selective cytotoxic effect (6.5-fold) on HeLa cells compared to normal fibroblast cells. The cytotoxic effect of the extract was found to be due to the arresting of the cell cycle in the S phase and increasing apoptosis through decreased MMP. Further studies are needed for the comprehensive effects of the extract on cell signaling.

Hanci, Hayrunisa; Coskun, Mehmet Veysel; Uyanik, Muhammed Hamidullah; Sezen, Selma; Igan, Hakan
Objective: In this study we investigated in vitro antifungal activity of fluconazole, green tea (Camellia sinensis) and quince leaf (Cydonia oblonga) extracts in Candida strains isolated from blood cultures. Methods: Fifty Candida spp were included to study. Camellia sinensis and Cydonia oblonga leaves collected from Rize and Erzurum/Tortum regions were prepared as an extract. Then stock solutions of the extracts and fluconazole powder obtained from the manufacturer were prepared for use in the Broth Microdilution (BMD) method according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) M27 A3 recommendation. Fluconazole minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values obtained from BMD method were evaluated according to CLSI M27 A4 break points. MIC values obtained for Camellia sinensis and Cydonia oblonga were interpreted according to fluconazole break points since there is no break points in the literature. Results: Of the 50 Candida spp. included in the study, 37 (74%) were C. albicans while 13 (26%) were non-albicans species. The most common isolated non-albicans species was C. parapsilosis (14%). For all tested Candida strains MIC 50 and MIC 90 values for fluconazole were found to be 0.125 mu g/mL- 0.25 mu g/mL while they were determined as 0.125 mu g/mL-64 mu g/mL and 0.125 mu g/mL-0.125 mu g/mL for green tea and quince leaves, respectively. Conclusion: According to the low MIC values, it is seen that green tea and quince leaf are in vitro effective against Candida species. However, further extensive in vitro and in vivo studies should be done on the possibility that green tea and quince leaf can be used alternatively in the treatment of invasive Candida infections.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2019An Empirical Study on Alcohol Participation and Consumption Decision in Turkey
Ipek, Egemen
In this study, households' alcohol participation and consumption decision structures and the effect of socioeconomic factors influencing on these decisions are analyzed by using Tobit and double-hurdle models with Household Budget Survey data in Turkey. This study shows that alcohol participation and consumption decision are taken as independently from each other and sequentially based on the goodness of fit tests of the model. When the effects of household demographic variables on alcohol consumption decisions are examined, it is obtained that having a child has a negative effect on alcohol participation decision and consumption of cigarette has a positive effect on alcohol participation decision. Furthermore, household income level has a positive effect on both alcohol participation and consumption decision.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2019Validity of Unemployment Hysteresis: The Most Fragile Five Developing Countries
Akkus, Omer; Topuz, Seher Gulsah
This study investigates the movement of unemployment for five most fragile developing countries including Turkey over the period 1980-2016. For this purpose, which one of the three approaches within the theoretical literature natural unemployment rate hypothesis, unemployment hysteresis or structuralist theory of unemployment is valid is examined using traditional unit root and unit root tests allowing for structural breaks. Hypothesis of unemployment hysteresis is valid for five most fragile developing countries according to both results of traditional unit root and unit root test allowing for structural breaks. Namely, unemployment rate does not fluctuate around natural unemployment rate and therefore the results indicate that shocks do not create temporary effects on unemployment but permanent. Governments in five most fragile developing countries are expected to actively intervene in the policy on unemployment since the unemployment rate does not tend to return to its natural level.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2019THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN TEACHING ARABIC TO NONARABIC SPEAKERS IN TURKISH STATE UNIVERSITIES
Qaddom, Mahmoud; Mohamed, Ali Abdelwahed Abdelhameed
Modern technology has become an auxiliary source in teaching languages and developing language basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Consequently, teachers, especially in the field of teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speakers, can not skip these technological methodsor ignore them in teaching and exercising language skills. The present research discusses the role of social media in teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speakers in Turkish public universities. Unlike previous studies which addressed the use of modern technology as a secondary consern in teaching arabic to non-native speakers, this research is one of the few studies thatbasically addresses this issue in this field. This study is dedicated to the study of the social media and its role in teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speakers in Turkish universities. It seeks to answer the following questions: What is the reality of the use of social media in teaching Arabic in Turkish universities? What is the effectiveness of the use of social media in the development of language skills among students of Turkish universities? What are the pros and cons of using social media sites in learning Arabic from the perspective of students and faculty teaching members in Turkish universities? We came into the following conclusions:All means of social media with all available channels contribute directly to the teaching of the Arabic language skills as well as overcoming a lot of mistakes committed by both teachers and learners of non-Arabic speakers.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2019Determination of the Effects of Alucra Forest Planning Unit's Population Dynamics on Land Use Changes
Çakir, Gunay; Kaya, Latif Gurkan; Yücedag, Cengiz; Bayram, Sitki
Aim of study: This study is done to monitor temporal land use/land cover changes in a typical mountain watershed covering an area of 135441.0 ha in North Eastern of Turkey based on rural demographic dynamics and forest management plans belonging to the years 1987 and 2013 coupled by GIS analyses. It also investigates changes in the shape of land use class (LUC) over the period. Material and Methods: The changes occurring time wise and positional on the base of the local LUC was examined by benefiting from the forest management plans from 1987 to 2013. Moreover, the change of LUC around these areas has been examined with the 1000 m zones thrown around the settlement areas and correlated with the fast decrease of the population recent years. Demographic dynamics (increase or decrease) affect the usage of forest lands, as well. Main results: While there was an increase in the productive forest lands (pure coniferous and deciduous, and mixed forest) between 1987 and 2013. In the same periods there was a decrease in agricultural and sandy areas. The increase of patches in the productive forest lands mostly resulted from afforestation works conducted in the unproductive forest lands, and forestry maintenance activities. Another reason for this increase of forest patches is why people have immigrated to urban areas in the last years. Research Highlights: It can be said that one of the most important causes in the rise of the forest resources in the Alucra Forest Planning Units (FPU) is the time wise changes of social structure. Furthermore, the forestry activities in the study between 1987 and 2013 are also the other significant factor in this increase of forest resources.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ3The effect of firm growth on brand value: Evidence from brand finance Turkey-100
Gerekan, Bilal; Pehlivan, Abdülkadir; Koçan, Mahmut
A variety of groups are increasingly using brand value for different purposes; thus, a range of consultancy firms calculate, by different methods, and publish brand values annually. The effect of many variables on brand value has been examined previously, but few studies have explored the relationship between brand value and firm growth. This study aims to bridge this gap in the literature, since this relationship is important to maximizing brand value. The research was based on the companies listed in Brand Finance Turkey-100 between 2012 and 2018. Sales, operating income, R&D, and marketing, selling, and distribution (MSD) expenditures were adopted as firm growth indicators, which revealed that: increasing operating income and MSD caused a significant increase in brand value, whereas increasing R&D reduced brand value; and there was no significant relationship between increased sales and brand value.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ1Experimental and numerical studies on axially loaded reinforced square hollow section T-joints
Ozyurt, E.; Das, S.
This paper presents outcomes of experimental and numerical studies completed on unreinforced, collar plate reinforced and doubler plate reinforced Square Hollow Section (SHS)T-joints subjected to axial compressive loading on the brace member. A total of nine full-scale SHS T-joint specimens were fabricated and tested, in which six specimens were reinforced with collar plate and doubler plate. Non-linear finite element (FE)models were developed using finite element code, ABAQUS. Test data was used to validate these FE models. Subsequently, validated FE models were used to conduct an extensive parametric study to investigate the effect of various geometrical parameters of main members and reinforcement plates on the ultimate capacity of reinforced SHS T-joints. The parametric study found that use of both collar and doubler plate reinforcements significantly increase the ultimate capacity of SHS T-joints. Thickness of the reinforcing plate has a positive effect if the thickness of the reinforcing plate is limited to twice the thickness of the chord member. This study, however, found that the capacity of a reinforced SHS T-joint is not dependent on the type of reinforcing plate. The study concludes that the maximum capacity that can be achieved from a reinforced joint is about double the capacity of a similar unreinforced joint. It was found that the Eurocode EN 1993-1-8 overestimates the capacity of reinforced SHS T-joints. Therefore, a new design method for predicting the ultimate capacity of the collar plate and doubler plate reinforced SHS T-joints was developed and this new design method is presented in this paper.
