Bilgen, Selcuk; Keles, Sedat; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Sari, Ahmet; Kaygusuz, Kamil
Renewable energy sources have been important for humans since the beginning of civilization. For centuries and in many ways, biomass has been used for heating and cooking. Many centuries ago mankind was already utilizing the clearly visible power of water for mechanical drive purposes, as was also the case with wind. On the other hand, Turkey, with its young population and growing energy demand per person, its fast growing urbanization, and its economic development, has been one of the fast growing power markets of the world for the last two decades. It is expected that the demand for electric energy in Turkey will be 300 billion kWh by the year 2010 and 580 billion kWh by the year 2020. Turkey is heavily dependent on expensive imported energy resources that place a big burden on the economy and air pollution is becoming a great environmental concern in the country. In this regard, renewable energy resources appear to be the one of the most efficient and effective solutions for clean and sustainable energy development in Turkey. Turkey's geographical location has several advantages for extensive use of most of these renewable energy sources. This article presents a review of the potential and utilization of the renewable energy sources in Turkey. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008The use of cation packing index for characterizing the weathering degree of granitic rocks
Ceryan, S.; Zorlu, K.; Gokceoglu, C.; Temel, A.
The weathering state and weatherability of rocks are highly important for engineering geology projects and the use of rocks as building stones. The weathering state of rocks can be described by various chemical and petrographical weathering indices. To determine weathering state of a rock, considerable amount of chemical analyses is required. Weatherability of rocks depends on not only their mineral composition but also the number of cation replaceable with hydrogen in a mineral. In this study, the use of the k-value (cation packing index is defined as the number of cation in a mole) for characterizing the degree of weathering of granitic rocks is investigated. For the purpose of the study, the Kurtun granitic rocks are selected as the material of the study. The study contains three main stages and these are field investigations, laboratory studies and regression analyses. During the field studies, in-situ weathering descriptions and sampling are carried out. The samples are subjected to chemical and petrographic analyses and physical and mechanical tests. At the final stage of the study, a series of regression analyses between the cation packing index and other properties of the samples are performed. The results show that the k-value can be used as a weathering indicator. When compared with the other chemical weathering indices, the k-value can be used as a weathering index without chemical analyses, because it can be determined by mineralogical analyses. - MakaleYalnız künye2008Investigation of seismic behavior of fluid-rectangular tank-soil/foundation systems in frequency domain
Livaoglu, R.
Main purpose of this study is to evaluate the dynamic behavior of fluid-rectangular tank-soil/foundation system with a simple and fast seismic analysis procedure. In this procedure, interaction effects are presented by Housner's two mass approximations for fluid and the cone model for soil/foundation system. This approach can determine; displacement at the height of the impulsive mass, the sloshing displacement and base forces for the soil/foundation system conditions including embedment and incompressible soil cases. Models and equations for proposed method were briefly explained for different tank-soil/foundation system combinations. By means of changing soil/foundation conditions, some comparisons are made on base forces and sloshing responses for the cases of embedment and no embedment. The results showed that the displacements and base shear forces generally decreased, with decreasing soil stiffness. However, embedment, wall flexibility, and soil-structure interaction (SSI) did not considerably affect the sloshing displacement.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Mineralogy, mineral chemistry, and fluid inclusion investigation of Köstere hydrothermal vein-type deposit (Gümüşhane, NE-Turkey)
Demir, Yilmaz; Uysal, Ibrahim; Sadiklar, M. Burhan; Sipahi, Ferkan
Vein type Köstere ores were deposited along cracks formed as a result of NE-SW fault system in the late Cretaceous felsic volcanic rocks in the northeastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. Total silver content of the Köstere ore is controlled by total silver content of the hydrothermal solution, homogenization temperature of the ore minerals and modal abundances of the tetrahedrite-tennantite serie minerals. The Zn/Cd ratios of sphalerites from the Köstere deposit are close to those of granite-related classical vein-type hydrothermal deposits. Furthermore Co/Ni ratio in pyrite separates, higher than unit, suggests an acidic source for the ore forming fluids. Homogenization temperatures of 200-370 °C and salinity of 0-9.85 eq. wt% NaCl were obtained on the basis of fluid inclusions studies measured in quartz minerals. These data indicate that ore formation conditions for the Köstere ore are similar with the vein-type epithermal-mesothermal deposits, related to the magmatic fluids. The overall low salinities of fluids (on average: 5.4 eq. wt% NaCl) suggest that meteoric waters were involved in mineralization. The possibility of interactions between ascending hydrothermal fluids and dilute meteoric waters is supported by geological features and mineralogical data which indicate a shallow depth of mineralization. Torul Pluton, which is the younger acidic unit (72 my) in the area, is suggested to be related to the formation of Köstere deposit.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Investigation of dynamic response of masonry minaret structures
Dogangun, Adem; Acar, Ramazan; Sezen, Halil; Livaoglu, Ramazan
Almost all historical minarets in Turkey were constructed using cut stone, masonry blocks or combination of these two materials. The structural and geometrical properties of each masonry minaret, or slender tower structure, depend on many factors including the structural knowledge and applications at the time of construction, experience of the architect or engineer, seismicity of the region, and availability of construction materials in that area. Recent earthquakes in Turkey have shown that most masonry minarets in high seismic regions are vulnerable to structural damage and collapse. In this study, in order to investigate the dynamic behavior of historical unreinforced masonry minarets, three representative minarets with 20, 25, and 30 m height were modeled and analyzed using two ground motions recorded during the 1999 Kocaeli and Duzce, Turkey earthquakes. The modal analyses of the models have shown that the structural periods and the overall structural response are influenced by the minaret height and spectral characteristics of the input motion. The dynamic displacement and axial stress time histories are computed at the critical points on the minarets. During recent earthquakes, most minaret failures occurred above the base of the structure. Consistent with the observed response, the largest stresses were calculated at the same location.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008The rift-related Late Cretaceous drowning of the Gümüşhane carbonate platform (NE Turkey)
Yilmaz, Cemil; Carannante, Gabriele; Kandemir, Raif
In the Gümüşhane region (NE Turkey), carbonate platform and basin deposits, crop out with excellent exposures. In this area, two localities (Mescitli-İkisu region, 10 km west of the Gümüş hane and Kale-Kilop region, 20 km southeast of the Gümüşhane), in which the related successions are particularly well exposed, have been studied in detail. The outcropping shallow water limestones of the Berdiga Formation (Eastern Pontides Carbonate Platform) were deposited during Late Jurassic-Cenomanian p.p. times in peritidal environments. The overlying Kermutdere Formation consists of monogenic breccias, calciturbidites, red pelagic limestone and siliciclastic turbidites, which were deposited in slope and basin environments. In the Gümüşhane region, the above Formations record the evolution from platform to basin settings in relation to an extensional regime set up in the Cenomanian. The tectonics-related drowning of the Eastern Pontides carbonate platform resulted in graben-semi graben basins in which deep marine sediments were deposited during Late Cretaceous times, having a wedge geometry.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Petrogenesis of the Neogene alkaline volcanics with implications for post-collisional lithospheric thinning of the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey
Aydin, Faruk; Karsli, Orhan; Chen, Bin
Whole-rock geochemistry, Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes and K-Ar data are reported for alkaline samples collected from the Neogene alkaline volcanics (NAVs) in the Eastern Pontides, northeastern Turkey, in order to investigate their source and petrogenesis and geodynamic evaluation of the region. The NAVs were made of three groups that comprise of basanite-tephrite (feldspar-free; Group A), tephrite-tephriphonolite (feldspar and feldspathoid-bearing; Group B) and alkaline basalt-rhyolite (feldspathoid-free; Group C) series. These rocks cover a broad compositional range from silica-undersaturated to silica-oversaturated types, almost all of which are potassic in character. They show enrichment of LREE and LILE and depletion of HFSE, without a Eu anomaly in most of the mafic samples. Textural features and calculated pressures based on the Cpx-barometer in each series indicate that the alkaline magma equilibrated at shallow crustal depths under a pressure of about 3-4.5 kbar and approximating a crystallization depth of 9-14 km. The NAVs are slightly depleted in isotopic composition, with respect to 87Sr/86Sr (ranging from 0.705018 to 0.705643) and 143Nd/144Nd (ranging from 0.512662 to 0.512714) that indicate young Nd model ages (0.51-059 Ga). This may indicate that the parent melts tapped a homogeneous and young lithospheric mantle source which was metasomatized by subduction-derived sediments during the Late Mesozoic. Pb isotopic compositions (206Pb/204Pb = 18.85-18.95; 207Pb/204Pb = 15.60-15.74; 208Pb/204Pb = 38.82-39.25) may also be consistent with a model for an enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle source. Lithospheric thinning and resultant upwelling of asthenosphere induced by lithospheric delamination may have favoured partial melting of chemically enriched, young lithospheric mantle beneath the Eastern Pontides. Then, the melt subsequently underwent a fractional crystallization process along with or without minor amounts of crustal assimilation, generating a wide variety of rock types in a post-collision extensional regime in the Eastern Pontides during the Neogene.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Landslide susceptibility mapping for a landslide-prone area (Findikli, NE of Turkey) by likelihood-frequency ratio and weighted linear combination models
Akgun, Aykut; Dag, Serhat; Bulut, Fikri
Landslides are very common natural problems in the Black Sea Region of Turkey due to the steep topography, improper use of land cover and adverse climatic conditions for landslides. In the western part of region, many studies have been carried out especially in the last decade for landslide susceptibility mapping using different evaluation methods such as deterministic approach, landslide distribution, qualitative, statistical and distribution-free analyses. The purpose of this study is to produce landslide susceptibility maps of a landslide-prone area (Findikli district, Rize) located at the eastern part of the Black Sea Region of Turkey by likelihood frequency ratio (LRM) model and weighted linear combination (WLC) model and to compare the results obtained. For this purpose, landslide inventory map of the area were prepared for the years of 1983 and 1995 by detailed field surveys and aerial-photography studies. Slope angle, slope aspect, lithology, distance from drainage lines, distance from roads and the land-cover of the study area are considered as the landslide-conditioning parameters. The differences between the susceptibility maps derived by the LRM and the WLC models are relatively minor when broad-based classifications are taken into account. However, the WLC map showed more details but the other map produced by LRM model produced weak results. The reason for this result is considered to be the fact that the majority of pixels in the LRM map have high values than the WLC-derived susceptibility map. In order to validate the two susceptibility maps, both of them were compared with the landslide inventory map. Although the landslides do not exist in the very high susceptibility class of the both maps, 79% of the landslides fall into the high and very high susceptibility zones of the WLC map while this is 49% for the LRM map. This shows that the WLC model exhibited higher performance than the LRM model.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Elemental and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic geochemistry of the most recent Quaternary volcanism in the Erzincan Basin, Eastern Turkey: framework for the evaluation of basalt-lower crust interaction
Karsli, Orhan; Chen, Bin; Uysal, Ibrahim; Aydin, Faruk; Wijbrans, Jan R.; Kandemir, Raif
Whole-rock geochemical and Sr, Nd and Pb isotope data are presented for a representative suite of the Quaternary Erzincan Volcanics (QEV) from the Erzincan basin (EB) along the North Anatolian Fault Zone, aiming to understand their origin and implications for basalt-lower crust interaction. Unspiked K-Ar and 40Ar/39Ar dating of dome lavas from the QEVs yielded ages of 102 ± 2 to 1061 ± 88 ka. The QEVs range from high-K low silica trachy-andesite to rhyolite in composition, with rhyolite volumetrically the most abundant. All rocks show high-K calc-alkaline affinity, a geochemical signature common to many post-collisional magmas. They are characterized by enrichment in LILE (Rb, Ba, K, Th) and LREE ((La/Yb)CN = 3-33), with pronounced depletion of HFSE. All lavas show negligible or small negative Eu anomalies in the andesitic to dacitic and strong Eu anomalies in the rhyolitic samples. These rocks have relatively low 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70404-0.70587 and slightly depleted Nd isotopic compositions (εNd from - 0.9 to 2.8), with significantly varied Mg# ranging from 2 to 53. Pb isotopic compositions [206Pb/204Pb = 18.90-19.02, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.64-15.70, 208Pb/204Pb = 38.91-39.97] reveal an enriched source signature, which implies that some portions of metasomatized lithospheric mantle could have contributed to their genesis. The isotopic ratios and chemical features along with the textural and compositional disequilibrium of the plagioclases and amphiboles suggest that mixing of mafic and felsic magmas played an important role in the magma genesis. A possible scenario for the genesis of these volcanic rocks is that basaltic magma formed as a result of partial melting of a subcontinental lithospheric mantle source responding to a possible upwelling of asthenospheric mantle which was caused by the extension produced by strike-slip tectonics. Underplating of these high-temperature basaltic magmas sparked partial fusion of a juvenile lower continental crust producing felsic melts; then magma mixing between basaltic and the felsic magmas followed. Fractional crystallization, with minor amounts crustal contamination could have played an important role in the evolution of magma. Modelling based on Sr and Nd isotope data shows that less than 10% of a basic magma and about 90% of juvenile lower continental crustal material was involved in the generation of the QEVs in a pull-apart basin along the North Anatolian Fault Zone.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008An application of the interaction matrices method for slope failure susceptibility zoning: Dogankent settlement area (Giresun, NE Turkey)
Ceryan, Nurcihan; Ceryan, Sener
Large-scale instability phenomena frequently occur in slopes in such geologically complex areas as Dogankent in NE Turkey. This study presents an application of the interaction matrices (IM) methodology, as a semi-qualitative method sensitive to large-scale slope instability. For both rock and soil slopes, the main interactive factors were distance from faults, degree of weathering and slope angle. Using IM, a slope failure susceptibility map was created for the Dogankent area and checked again field evidence. The results indicated that IM could be a useful method for slope stability assessment.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Strength optimization of laminated composite plates
Topal, Umut; Uzman, Ümit
A procedure to select the optimum fiber orientations and determine the maximum load-bearing capacity of the simply supported symmetrically laminated plates combined the bidirectional tension loads and bending moments is described. The fiber orientation is considered a design variable. The optimization problem consists of two stages. The objective of the first stage is to maximize the strength of the laminated plates by determining the fiber orientations optimally while the objective of the second stage is to maximize each of the bidirectional tension loads and bending moments subject to the Tsai-Wu failure criterion for the optimum fiber orientations obtained from the first stage. The modified feasible direction method (MFD) is used as an optimization procedure. Therefore, a FORTRAN program is used for the finite element analysis and optimization routine. Also, the optimum fiber orientations are obtained using the golden section (GS) method to compare the results. Finally, the effect of the different plate aspect ratio, width-to thickness ratio, the uncertainties in the material properties and the uncertainties in the fiber orientations on the optimum results is investigated and the results are compared.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Dynamic analysis and seismic performance evaluation of above-ground liquid-containing tanks
Sezen, Halil; Livaoglu, Ramazan; Dogangun, Adem
A large number of industrial facilities were damaged during the 1999 Mw 7.4 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake. One of those industrial facilities, Habas plant located within 10 km of the fault trace, provides liquefied gases to commercial plants and medical facilities. Two of the three tanks at the Habas facility collapsed during the earthquake. The main objectives of this paper were to evaluate the seismic performance of tanks and investigate the parameters influencing the dynamic behaviour. Simplified and finite element dynamic analyses of the tanks are carried out including the effect of liquefied gas-structure interaction using a ground motion recorded at a nearby site. The vulnerabilities of the structural system, the observed performance, and damage pattern are discussed by comparing the dynamic analysis results with the strength and deformation capacity of the support columns. The dynamic analysis results from a simplified three-mass model and a finite element model confirmed that the axial and lateral strength of the columns supporting the two nearly full tanks were not sufficient to resist the demand imposed during the earthquake. Consistent with the observed structural performance, an elastic response is predicted for the columns supporting the undamaged 25% full identical tank.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008The effects of the fiber contents on the mechanic properties of the adobes
Yetgin, Şükrü; ÇAVDAR, Özlem; Çavdar, Ahmet
In this study, compression and tensile tests were conducted for five different adobe mixtures. The important part of this study consisted of uniaxial compressive tests done with natural fiber mixtures. Thus, the results obtained from mechanical tests were presented in the form of stress-strain graphs. In addition, mechanical properties were related to the water content for workability, unit weight and fiber contents and discussions were given. The results show that as fiber content increases, compressive and tensile strengths decrease, and shrinkage rates decrease.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008A new quantitative weathering classification for igneous rocks
Ceryan, Sener; Tudes, S.; Ceryan, N.
The description and classification of the rocks provide important information for geotechnical modeling in order to predict their engineering behaviors. One of the most imperative parameters influencing the engineering behaviors of the rocks is the degree of weathering. Therefore, it is evident that a realistic weathering classification is necessary mostly for establishing the geotechnical models in the engineering geology studies. For this reason, development of a qualitative weathering classification is the main purpose of the present study. The Weathering State Parameter has been first created by describing the chemical and physical changes separately owing to weathering by employing the ultrasonic wave velocity in the rock material. Then a quantitative weathering index was introduced by combining the weathering condition and the slake-durability known as the indicator of the rock/soil ratio in the rock material. Finally, this index obtained was applied on the prediction of the engineering properties of the Harsit granitic rocks (Giresun, NE Turkey). As a consequence of this study, it has been determined that the engineering properties of the samples and the numerical index proposed could be predicted. In addition, the use and the limitations of the index introduced herein were discussed.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Municipal solid waste characteristics and management in Gümüşhane, Turkey
Nas, S. Serkan; Bayram, Adem
This paper presents a general overview of the current municipal solid waste (MSW) management in Gümüşhane Province, Turkey. In order to characterize the solid waste stream in the Municipality of Gümüşhane, a long-term study was conducted over a 52-week period between the spring of 2004 and the winter of 2005. In this study, percentage of components and specific weight of the MSW, the composting parameters (moisture content, total organic carbon, total nitrogen and pH), organic matter content, calorific value and the heavy metal concentrations (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn, Co) of the compostable wastes sorted from the mixed MSW were determined and evaluated. In Gümüşhane, a mean of 70 tons of MSW are generated each day or 1 kg/day/capita. Approximately 4500 kg of the MSW were collected and sorted in a year, and the mean specific weight of these is 308 kg/m3. Approximately 30% of the MSW generated is compostable wastes and the yearly mean moisture content, organic matter content, C/N ratio and pH of these are 78%, 92.1%, 21.6/1 and 4.73, respectively, and approximately 24% of the MSW consists of recyclable materials. The recommended system deals with maximizing recycling and minimizing landfilling of the MSW, and consists of separation at source, collection, sorting, recycling, composting and sanitary landfilling. Heavy metal concentrations of the compostable wastes from the open dump were determined to decrease in the following order: Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cd > Co.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Thermal buckling load optimization of laminated composite plates
Topal, U.; Uzman, Ü.
In this study, the applicability of the Modified Feasible Direction (MFD) method on the thermal buckling optimization of laminated plates subjected to uniformly distributed temperature load is investigated. The objective function is to maximize the critical temperature capacity of laminated plates and the fiber orientation is considered as design variable. The first-order shear deformation theory is used in the mathematical formulation. For this purpose, a program based on FORTRAN is used for the optimization of laminated plates. Finally, the effect of aspect ratio, antisymmetric lay-up, boundary condition, material anisotropy, ratio of coefficients of thermal expansion, and hybrid laminates on the results is investigated and the results are compared.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Effects of some water quality parameters on the dissolved oxygen balance of streams
Nas, S.S.; Bayram, A.; Nas, E.; Bulut, V.N.
The Galyan Stream basin supports the water of Atasu Dam, which will provide domestic water for Trabzon province in Turkey. The Galyan Stream empties into Deǧirmendere Stream and their water into the Black Sea that these streams are important watersheds in northeastern Turkey. Water samples were periodically taken from Temelli site (Galyan Stream), Deǧirmen site (Kuştul Stream) and Çiftdere site (Galyan Stream). In this study, at first, variations of dissolved oxygen profile are determined from dissolved oxygen, temperature and carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand measurements by using Point Resources Streeter-Phelps equation. Water samples are taken from the Galyan and Kuştul Streams. Water quality parameters were analyzed for both streams and evaluated according to the Turkish Water Pollution Control Regulation (TWPCR). Critical dissolved oxygen deficiency values, which were calculated for monthly average (2004 April-2005 January) and annual averages (2000-2004), are seen to be over the limit value in the Galyan Stream having first class water quality in terms of dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature and biochemical oxygen demand. In the following it is disclosed that treatment isn't required. That study shows that minimum dissolved oxygen limit value (8 mgL-1), which is desired in domestic waters, is under the limit value in July, August and September months in case of a mixture.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Reproductive and milk production traits of Holstein Friesian cows in pre-organic and organic dairy husbandry in Turkey
Bayram, Bahri; Yanar, Mete; Akbulut, Ömer
The study was aimed to describe changes caused by conversion to organic dairy farming in Turkey, focusing on reproductive and milk production traits. The data used in this research were obtained from reproductive and milk records of Holstein Friesian cows reared in a private organic dairy farm. The results revealed that cows under organic management had shorter days open and calving interval values compared with cows reared under pre-organic system. Actual and 305 days milk yields of cattle in organic system were greater than these of cows in pre-organic system. Lactation duration was also significantly influenced by farming system and calving season, but days dry was not affected by none the non-genetic factors.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Magma interaction processes inferred from Fe-Ti oxide compositions in the Dölek and Sariçiçek plutons, Eastern Turkey
Karsli, Orhan; Aydin, Faruk; Uysal, Ibrahim; Sadiklar, M. Burhan
Magnetite-ulvöspinel and ilmenite-hematite solid solution intergrowths from the high-K calc-alkaline Dölek and Sarιçiçek plutons, Eastern Turkey, were investigated using microprobe analyses. Compositions of twenty-eight samples from the host rocks and their enclaves' in the plutons were used to estimate the oxygen fugacity and temperature. The ilmenite and ulvöspinel component exsolves out along certain preferred crystallographic planes in the titanomagnetite of the host rocks, while they are always absent in those of the mafic-microgranular enclaves. The titanomagnetite and ilmenite show variations as Mt98-70Usp02-30 and Ilm99-65Hm01-35 in composition, respectively. Estimations of oxygen fugacity and temperature using the titanomagnetite-ilmenite thermometry/oxygen barometry range from log/O2 of -15.30 to -20.48 in host rocks, log/O2 of -15.39 to -20.80 in the mafic microgranular enclaves and 617±6 to 758±23 °C in host rocks, 622±6 to 735±24 °C in the mafic microgranular enclaves, possibly indicating crystallisation temperature. Applying magnetite-ilmenite thermometry/ oxygen barometry to the granitoid rocks also involves microprobe analyses of ilmenite lamellae in titanomagnetite and this method yielded mean temperatures of 679±18 °C. The specific forms and chemical properties of Fe-Ti oxides, and similarities in crystallization temperature and oxygen fugacity of the host rocks and the mafic microgranular enclaves (MME) obtained from the Fe-Ti oxide pairs imply that thermal equilibrium probably occurred between two contrasted magmas, which mixed invarious proportion so that possibly a felsic and a more mafic magma interaction occurred in a convectively dynamic magma chamber during crystallization of the plutons. Probably, underplating may be responsible for genesis of the hybrid plutons. Thus, for mixing of coeval magmas derived from a lithospheric upper mantle (mafic end-member) and lower crust (felsic end-member), a thermal anomaly should be supplied. Upwelling of hot asthenospheric material result in thermal perturbation and melting of lithospheric mantle. Intrusion of hot lithospheric mantle-derived mafic magma then induced lower crustal melting, producing felsic melt. Mixing of the lower crust-derived melt and lithospheric mantle-derived magma formed the hybrid pluton. This process requires a post-collisional extensional tectonic setting during the Eocene in the Eastern Pontides.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Influence of weathering on the engineering properties of Harsit granitic rocks (NE Turkey)
Ceryan, Sener; Tudes, Sule; Ceryan, Nurcihan
Weathering and hydrothermal alteration of the granitic rocks in the Eastern Black Sea Region (NE Turkey) are important phenomena affecting the engineering projects in the region. The study investigated the probable paths of rock-forming mineral transformations due to weathering in the Harsit granitoid rocks, the changes of the major oxides as a consequence of weathering and the effects of weathering on the engineering properties. To identify the changes in the major oxides, the volume concentrations were considered in relation to the dry density. Chemical leaching during weathering was shown to be significant in changing the minerals. It was concluded that the engineering properties of the weathered granitic rocks can be most reliably predicted by P-wave velocity.
