- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ2Fertility, family structure, and female labor force participation: evidence from Southern Europe and Türkiye
Beken, Hikmet Gülçin; Kirer Silva Lecuna, Hale
This study investigates how fertility, family structures, and institutional environments shape women’s labor force participation in Southern Europe (Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal) and Türkiye. Using balanced panel data from 2015 to 2022 and fixed effects models with Driscoll–Kraay standard errors, the analysis identifies a negative relationship between fertility and female employment, though only at marginal levels of statistical significance. Robustness checks using Ridge regression and principal component analysis confirm this finding across alternative specifications. Significant country-level fixed effects reveal considerable heterogeneity, with Portugal and Spain exhibiting higher baseline participation rates and Türkiye recording notably lower values. While the empirical model does not directly measure institutional support, childcare availability, or cultural norms, the comparative literature suggests that cross-country differences in these dimensions likely contribute to the observed patterns. The findings point to the potential importance of integrated policy approaches, including affordable childcare and flexible work arrangements, in supporting women’s employment alongside fertility.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ4Psychometric Validation of the Turkish Version of the Personalized Psychological Flexibility Index (T-PPFI) in Disaster Search and Rescue Volunteers
Çınar, Öznur; Cengiz, Ekrem
This study aimed to perform a cross-cultural adaptation of the English version of the Personalized Psychological Flexibility Index into Turkish (T-PPFI). It was conducted among 604 disaster search and rescue volunteers who participated in the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Türkiye. Exploratory factor analysis supported a three-factor, 15-item structure, and confirmatory factor analysis indicated good fit for the three-factor model. Convergent and divergent validity were supported by a positive correlation with the Comprehensive Assessment of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Processes (CompACT) and negative correlations with the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II) and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21). The T-PPFI showed acceptable internal consistency (total score α= .727; ω= .712) and high test-retest reliability over 14 days (r= .962). Gender measurement invariance analyses supported comparability of T-PPFI scores across men and women. Hierarchical regression analyses provided evidence for the incremental validity of the T-PPFI beyond AAQ-II and CompACT in predicting DASS-21 outcomes, and higher-order EFA supported construct-level discriminant validity. The findings suggest that the 15-item T-PPFI is a reliable and valid measure of psychological flexibility in Turkish disaster search and rescue volunteers. All rights reserved.

Pınarbaşı, Işıl Esra; Demirbağ, Orkun; Örs, Şerife
Mine closures are not merely the end of an economic cycle but complex processes that produce long-term social, environmental, and psychosocial consequences. Despite the growing recognition of the importance of Social Impact Assessment (SIA), studies often underemphasize the closure phase and its social repercussions. This study investigates those social impacts in Gümüşhane, Türkiye, a historically mining-dependent region, through the lens of stakeholder theory and a qualitative fieldwork approach. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 21 participants including mine workers, company representatives, public officials, NGOs, media, and local community members, the study identifies significant transformations in six domains: economy, employment and education, land use, demographics, environment and health, and human rights. Findings reveal that mine closures led to income loss, unemployment, migration, weakening of social cohesion, environmental degradation, and violations of labor and participation rights. The exclusion of local stakeholders from closure planning exacerbated distrust and social fragmentation. Providing a nuanced understanding of the social dynamics surrounding mine closure, study contributes to the growing literature calling for more inclusive, just, and sustainable closure processes, and emphasizes the urgency of incorporating SIA as a mandatory and comprehensive practice including not only the opening but also the closure and post-closure stages of mining.

Berktaş, Serap; İncegül, Yasemin; Çam, Mustafa
To protect phenolics of grape pomace, microencapsulation process was carried out with HI-CAP 100, Capsul TA, maltodextrin and potato starch. Encapsulation efficiencies of microcapsules were determined between 69–97%. TPC, TFC, and TAC values of starch-based microcapsules were in the ranges of 36–74 mg GAE/g, 14–28 mg CE/g, and 0.37–0.84 mg C3GE/g, respectively. Maltodextrin, with a value of 74.04 mg GAE/g, was determined to be the best coating material to retain grape pomace phenolics. Similar results were also seen in TFC (28.40 mg CE/g) and ABTS (128.2 mg TE/g) values. While water solubility values were found between 73–92% in microcapsules, grape pomace had 21.81%. The effects of coating materials on the release and bioaccessibility value of grape pomace phenolics encapsulated with different starch types in vitro digestion of oral, gastric and small intestine were investigated. Potato starch-coated microcapsules displayed the least TPC loss in gastric digestion and higher phenolics release in small intestine digestion. The microcapsule with the highest bioaccessibility in oral, gastric, and small intestine phases was Capsul TA, with values of 121%, 205%, and 120%, respectively. Additionally, potato starch-based microencapsulation of phenolics may provide alternative benefits like the slow and balanced release of phenolics in the digestive tract. Microcapsules with maltodextrin, Capsul TA and HI-CAP as coating material had amorphous structures, while potato starch resulted in crystalline structure in the microcapsules. Grape pomace phenolic starch-based microcapsules can be evaluated in the food and pharmaceutical industry depending on the intended use.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Analysis of microstructural properties and durability characteristics of geopolymer mortars with mining waste
Aksüt, Yavuz Selim; Kaya, Yusuf; Sünnetçi, Kadir
The growing environmental concerns over resource depletion and carbon emissions from cement production have accelerated the search for sustainable alternatives to conventional concrete. In this context, geopolymers have emerged as promising binders, particularly through the utilization of aluminosilicate-rich industrial wastes to reduce environmental impact and support waste recycling. This study examines the mechanical and durability properties of geopolymer mortars produced by partially replacing ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) with mining waste (MW) at ratios of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%. The mixtures were activated using 10 M sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate under standard water curing conditions. Mechanical strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), freeze–thaw resistance, and sulfate durability were evaluated. The optimum performance was obtained with 20% MW, which achieved a 30.4% increase in flexural strength and 18% in compressive strength at 7 days. This mixture also showed the lowest mass (10.69%) and strength loss (18.36%) after 50 freeze–thaw cycles. Scanning electron microscopy analysis confirmed enhanced gel formation and microstructural densification. The findings demonstrate that controlled use of MW not only improves durability but also promotes sustainable binder development in geopolymer technology.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Psychometric validation of the Turkish Short form of the disaster resilience scale for individuals
Doğru, Salih
Purpose This study adapts and validates the Short Form of the Disaster Resilience Scale for Individuals (DRSi-SF) into Turkish, aiming to provide a practical tool for assessing disaster preparedness in high-risk contexts. Method Data were collected from 505 adults across Türkiye, a country highly exposed to earthquakes, floods, and landslides. The DRSi-SF was translated and back-translated, with linguistic equivalence confirmed via paired t-tests and correlations. Psychometric analyses included exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, internal consistency, concurrent validity testing with the Disaster Risk Perception Scale, and measurement invariance across gender and disaster experience groups. Findings and Conclusion The Turkish DRSi-SF retained its original three-factor structure—knowledge, readiness, and action—with acceptable fit indices (CFI = 0.906, RMSEA = 0.074) and reliability (α = 0.71). Disaster resilience correlated positively with risk perception, supporting concurrent validity. Measurement invariance was established at configural, metric, and scalar levels across groups, enabling meaningful subgroup comparisons. Practical implications The DRSi-SF offers a brief, scalable instrument for policymakers, emergency agencies, and NGOs to identify resilience levels, inform preparedness strategies, and target interventions. Its brevity facilitates integration into e-government systems, mobile applications, and community-based screenings. Originality This is the first Turkish adaptation of the DRSi-SF, aligning with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and providing a culturally relevant, psychometrically sound tool applicable to other hazard-prone regions.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ3Evaluation of Factors Affecting Innovation in Developed and Developing Countries by MCDM
Salad, Liban Daud; Seyhan, Nazll
This study comparatively analyzes the economic, social, and technological factors determining the innovation performance of developed and developing countries within a holistic multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework, using data from 2013 and 2021. The criterion weights determined by CRITIC and SWARA, and the WEDBA results, indicate a significant structural shift between the periods. In developed countries, R&D expenditures, patent production, and intellectual property protection are key determinants of innovation performance; while in developing countries, digital infrastructure, human capital, and education investments stand out. The findings reveal that innovation policies based on strategic priorities specific to country groups are more effective.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ2Multi level throttled attention for accurate and efficient classification of retinal diseases in OCT images
Celik, Kemal; Celik, Fatih
The classification of retinal diseases using Optical Coherence Tomography images has gained significant attention in recent years. However, due to the heterogeneity of retinal disorders, achieving high classification accuracy remains challenging. While deep learning has improved the identification of various ophthalmic conditions, accurate and early diagnosis is still critical for effective clinical decision-making. Additionally, reducing computational complexity is essential for building scalable diagnostic systems. To address these challenges, we propose a novel Multi-level Throttled Attention (MLTA) model that first applies attention to extract important features, followed by throttling to filter out redundant or less useful features. This process is applied at multiple stages, operating on both Convolutional Neural Network layers and Transformer architectures, and then fuses them finally. This approach optimizes feature selection by preserving the most informative retinal features while discarding redundant ones from multi-level feature maps. As a result, the model enhances classification performance while reducing computational overhead. We evaluate our proposed model on two benchmark OCT datasets: OCT2017 and OCTID, achieving accuracy scores of 99.59 ± 0.04% and 99.71 ± 0.03%, respectively. Our method outperforms existing CNN-based and Vision Transformer-based models, demonstrating superior accuracy and efficiency through this hierarchical attention.

Kösetevek grape is a significant indigenous black grape variety with colored pulp, grown in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye. Mash heating (MH) is commonly used in grape juice production. However, to better preserve phenolic, aroma, and nutritional components, Thermosonication (TS) process is utilized as an alternative technique. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of TS conditions on the physicochemical and sensory properties of grape juice obtained from Kösetevek grapes. Grape juice underwent TS at various temperatures and ultrasound energy density (UED) levels, followed by an optimization study using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Grape juice samples were analyzed for total phenolic content (TP), total monomeric anthocyanins (TMA), antioxidant activity (FRAP and DPPH), polymeric color ratio (PCR), color difference (ΔE*), and extraction yield. The optimum TS conditions were determined as 801.99 J/g UED and 43.5 °C (desirability value = 0.595). Under optimal conditions, anthocyanin profiles were characterized by HPLC, aroma compounds were identified using GC–MS, and sensory properties were evaluated by descriptive analysis. TS resulted in a significant increase in TP and TMA content. The ΔE* value was lower, suggesting that the product's natural color was better preserved. TS enhanced the phenolic content and yield of the grape juice while also contributing to the preservation of color and sensory properties. TS juice contained the highest concentrations of aroma compounds, particularly C6 compounds and higher alcohols. This characteristic made TS more effective at preserving fresh aromas compared to MH, which generated cooked odors. Overall, TS has the potential to be applied as an alternative to or together with traditional thermal processes in industrial production.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Predefined time adaptive controller design for attitude synchronisation of chaotic satellites with unknown effects
Bingöl, Özhan
This study proposes a practical predefined-time adaptive control framework for the synchronisation and anti-synchronisation of chaotic satellite attitude dynamics subject to unknown nonlinearities, parametric uncertainties, and bounded external disturbances. The proposed controller combines radial-basis-function (RBF) neural-network approximation of lumped unknown dynamics with adaptive estimation laws for both physically meaningful satellite parameters and neural-network weights. A Lyapunov-based stability analysis proves that all closed-loop signals remain bounded and that the synchronisation errors converge to an explicitly characterised residual neighbourhood of the origin within a predefined upper-bound time independent of initial conditions. The residual bound is expressed in terms of the neural approximation error, adaptive gains, and predefined-time design parameters, thereby providing practical tuning insight. Comparative numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves fast convergence, reduced actuator effort, and improved robustness under varying inertia, disturbances, and initial conditions. These results indicate the suitability of the proposed method for satellite formation and attitude-control tasks requiring predictable convergence times and resilience to modelling uncertainties.

The antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis is not merely a consequence of the emergence ofresistant pathogens. Furthermore, the remaining shortcomings oftraditional antibiotic production and development processes have become a profound health threat, exacerbated by their pharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic limitations. This book chapter redefines the AMR crisis as a problem of drug and treatment discovery as well as drug delivery to target tissues, and examines the technological angle emerging at the intersection of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI) in response to this problem. This review begins by examining the problems inherent in traditional antibiotic architecture, such as systemic toxicity, low bioavailability, poor stability, and, most importantly, the inability to penetrate protected sites such as bacterial biofilms or intracellular bunkers. The post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) effect has been widely studied; however, studies conducted under real-world conditions remain limited. Furthermore, investigations into how different conditioning activities (CAs) influence PAPE responses are also scarce. Therefore, this study investigates the acute effects of high-intensity barbell hip thrust (BHT) and back squat (BS) exercises, performed after a soccer-specific warm-up (Wup), on physical performance in soccer players. Seventeen male amateur soccer players participated in the study (mean age: 22.29 ± 3.60 years; height: 1.78 ± 0.06 m; body weight: 73.18 ± 8.44 kg). Participants attended 5 experimental sessions. In the first session, after anthropometric assessments, participants were familiarized with the exercises and tests. In the second session, one-repetition maximum (1RM) was tested for BS and HT exercises. In the following three sessions, two PAPE protocols and one traditional (TRAD) protocol were performed in a randomized order. In the TRAD protocol, players performed physical performance tests including countermovement jump (CMJ), 10-m and 30-m sprint, and zigzag agility 16 minutes after a soccer-specific Wup. In the PAPE protocols, players performed CAs (e.g., hip thrust or back squat) at 85% of 1RM for 2 sets of 3 repetitions following a soccer-specific Wup, and completed the tests 8 minutes later. Results from the linear mixed-effects models revealed no significant effect of protocol on any performance variable, including CMJ (F(2,32) = 1.554, p = 0.227), 10 m sprint (F(2,32) = 0.242, p = 0.786), 30 m sprint (F(2,32) = 0.453, p = 0.640), and change of direction (COD) performance (F(2,32) = 0.946, p = 0.399). Marginal R² values indicated that the protocol explained only a minimal proportion of variance in performance outcomes (0.005–0.030), whereas conditional R² and ICC values suggested that between-participant differences accounted for a substantial proportion of variance, particularly for CMJ and 30 m sprint performance. Bonferroni-adjusted pairwise comparisons further showed no significant differences between PAPEBHT, PAPEBS, and TRAD protocols for CMJ, 10 m sprint, 30 m sprint, or COD performance (all p > 0.05). In conclusion, neither PAPE protocol performed after a soccer-specific warm-up significantly enhanced or impaired subsequent CMJ, sprint, or COD performance compared with the traditional warm-up. These findings suggest that adding PAPEBHT or PAPEBS protocols after a soccer-specific warm-up may maintain subsequent performance without inducing measurable decrements; however, their ergogenic effectiveness may depend on individual factors such as players’ strength levels, recovery capacity, training status, and physical characteristics.

Objectives This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ShotBlocker use on pain levels during needle-related procedures in adults. Design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Data sources Studies were searched in the PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Higher Education Council (YÖK) Thesis Center databases without any year restrictions. Review/Analysis methods The search and study selection were conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, and 18 studies meeting the inclusion criteria were included in the analysis. Data extraction and methodological quality assessment were performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools. Findings were evaluated using meta-analysis and narrative synthesis methods. Results In this systematic review and meta-analysis, ShotBlocker was found to be effective in reducing pain levels in adults (SMD = −1,011; 95% CI: −1.390 to −0.631; Z = −5,221; p < .001; I² = 91.4%). However, substantial heterogeneity was observed among the included studies (I² = 91.4%). Conclusions This study demonstrates that ShotBlocker may be an effective nonpharmacological method for reducing pain levels during needle-related procedures in adults. However, the results should be interpreted with caution because of the substantial heterogeneity among the included studies.

Şahin, Nagehan; Şan, Murat; Kankal, Murat
The impact of climate change on extreme rainfall regimes requires a reassessment of the design processes of traditional hydrological structures. For this purpose, conducting an in-depth analysis of the nonstationary nature of extreme rainfall in regions with complex topography and climate is of great importance. This study examines the stationary and nonstationary states of standard duration (5 min–24 h) annual maximum rainfall data across Türkiye. For this purpose, the intensity-duration-frequency relationship was analyzed using data at 100 homogeneous stations during 1980–2020. The analyses were performed using the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution with eight linear and non linear location and scale parameters, based on stationary and nonstationary models. Time was included as a covariate in nonstationary models. The corrected akaike information criterion and likelihood ratio test were used to select the appropriate GEV distribution. Findings indicate that stationarity is generally dominant, but nonstationarity is relatively higher in a nonlinear manner in cold climates and complex topography. The effect of location and scale parameters was found to be individual in the short duration and combined in the long duration. It was observed that nonstationarity was relatively higher in complex topography than in flatter regions up to 8 h. Still, the diversity of nonlinear models decreased over the long duration. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the need to consider nonstationary approaches in designing hydrological structures, especially in climate change.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ2Arctic governance through discourse: Arctic and Arctic council observer states
Limon, Onur; Gürdal Limon, Elif
This article examines how Arctic governance is discursively constituted through national Arctic policy and strategy documents and how these discursive constructions differentiate governance roles between Arctic states and Arctic Council observer states. Rather than treating national strategies as neutral policy instruments, the study conceptualizes them as political texts that articulate authority, responsibility, and legitimacy within an asymmetrical governance system. Methodologically, the article employs qualitative discourse analysis of the most recent official Arctic strategies of eight Arctic states and twelve observer states. Using MAXQDA (version 24), the analysis is organized around six thematic domains: security policy; climate change and environment; international cooperation; resource management; Indigenous peoples and rights; and economic development and sustainability. The findings reveal a high degree of discursive convergence across both actor groups, particularly around climate change, sustainability, environmental protection, and cooperation. However, this convergence does not indicate substantive policy alignment or egalitarian governance. Arctic states frame governance through narratives of sovereignty, stewardship, and regulatory responsibility, while observer states construct legitimacy through scientific contribution, multilateralism, and normative alignment. The article argues that discursive convergence can function as a kind of governance infrastructure that enables participation while tending to stabilize asymmetrical authority.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Efficacy and safety of doxorubicin-ifosfamide versus gemcitabine-docetaxel as first-line therapy in advanced nonuterine leiomyosarcoma: A multicenter real-world study
Tunbekici, Salih; Sahin, Gokhan; Yuksel, Haydar Cagatay; Acar, Caner; Akin, Imge; Aslanhan, Hasan; Isci, Mert; Kabaoglu, Ceren; Bal, Hamit; Sakin, Abdullah
Nonuterine leiomyosarcoma (NU-LMS) is a rare and biologically distinct subtype of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) with clinical behavior differing from that of uterine leiomyosarcoma. In advanced or metastatic STS, immunotherapy has demonstrated only modest activity, and chemotherapy remains the cornerstone of treatment. However, there is a persistent unmet need for more effective and better-tolerated options in this population. This multicenter, retrospective study included 150 patients with histologically confirmed metastatic NU-LMS who received first-line doxorubicin-ifosfamide (AI) or gemcitabine-docetaxel (GD) at 26 oncology centers in Turkey between 2010 and 2024. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). Survival was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox proportional hazards models. Of 150 patients, 79 received AI and 71 received GD. Median OS for the entire cohort was 21.0 months. Median OS was 22.0 months with AI and 19.1 months with GD (p = .18), median progression-free survival was 7.3 versus 6.1 months (p = .66), and overall response rate was 25.3% versus 29.6% (p = .58), indicating no statistically significant differences in efficacy between the two regimens. Hematologic toxicities were less frequent with GD. AI and GD demonstrated comparable efficacy as first-line regimens for advanced or metastatic NU-LMS, with fewer hematologic toxicities observed for GD. Tumor location may have prognostic implications. These findings support individualized treatment selection and highlight the need for prospective studies in this rare and understudied sarcoma subtype, while the recent LMS-04 trial underscores the importance of future comparisons with doxorubicin-trabectedin to further refine first-line strategies in LMS.

Çimen, Okay; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Göncüoglu, Mehmet Cemal; Akal, Cuneyt; Arslan, Mehmet; Simonetti, Antonio; Karaoglan, Fatih
The & Idot;stanbul-Zonguldak Terrane is located in northwest Anatolia and includes several outcrops with pre-Cambrian basement units. The Karadere Basement Unit represents the easternmost basement of this terrane and is composed of paragneiss, quartzite, and orthogneiss. The paragneiss and quartzite are cut by orthogneisses and disconformably overlain by Lower Ordovician to Middle Devonian cover units. Its pre-Cambrian to Palaeozoic tectonic evolution remains poorly understood, and therefore, this study reports whole-rock trace element signatures, detrital zircon U-Pb, and muscovite Ar-Ar age data for samples of paragneiss, quartzite, amphibolite, and orthogneiss. The whole-rock geochemical data indicate that the protoliths of the paragneiss and quartzite samples investigated here could have been derived from arc-related felsic magmatic units located in an active continental margin. The protoliths of amphibolites and orthogneiss samples are gabbro and granite, respectively, and their geochemical signatures are akin to those from continental arc igneous suites. The detrital zircon U-Pb data are characterized by predominantly Mesoproterozoic (84%) and lesser amount of Palaeoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic ages and suggest an early Tonian (youngest peak age of 915 +/- 18 Ma) maximum depositional age. Moreover, zircon U-Pb dating analyses from an orthogneiss sample yielded an age of 603 +/- 2 Ma, indicating the occurrence of mid-Ediacaran arc magmatism. This represents one of the oldest Ediacaran ages obtained from the metamagmatic basement rocks of the & Idot;stanbul-Zonguldak Terrane. Ar-Ar dating of muscovite from ortho- and paragneiss samples yielded ages of 533 +/- 25 Ma and 530 +/- 9 Ma, respectively, which are interpreted as early Cambrian cooling ages. Overall, the combined results reported here reveal that the Karadere Basement Unit is markedly different from NE African basement units but displays similarities to the basement rocks of both Avalonian and Amazonian terranes. It may have been formed and metamorphosed in an Avalonian-Cadomian active continental margin during the mid- to late Neoproterozoic and early Cambrian.
