Effect of Brewing Conditions on Sensorial and Antioxidant Properties of Sage Tea

Ilyasoglu, Huri; Zemzemoglu, Tuba Eda Arpa

In this study, the effects of infusion time and temperature on the sensorial properties and antioxidant capacity of sage tea were evaluated by using the response surface methodology. The obtained quadratic models explained more than 90% variability in the responses. The infusion temperature showed significant negative effect on the sensorial properties whereas it had significant positive effect on the total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity (p<0.05). Moreover, the infusion time showed significant negative effects (p<0.05) on the responses. The best combination of brewing conditions was determined as 75-80 degrees C and 2-4 min.

Behavioral economics and monetary wisdom: A cross-level analysis of monetary aspiration, pay (dis)satisfaction, risk perception, and corruption in 32 nations

Tang, Thomas Li-Ping; Li, Zhen; Özbek, Mehmet Ferhat; Lim, Vivien Kim Geok; Teo, Thompson Sian Hin; Ansari, Mahfooz A.; Sutarso, Toto; Garber, Ilya E.; Chiu, Randy Ki-Kwan; Charles-Pauvers, Brigitte

Corruption involves greed, money, and risky decision-making. We explore the love of money, pay satisfaction, probability of risk, and dishonesty across cultures. Avaricious monetary aspiration breeds unethicality. Prospect theory frames decisions in the gains–losses domain and high–low probability. Pay dissatisfaction (in the losses) excites dishonesty in the name of justice at the individual level. Corruption Perceptions Index, CPI, signals a high–low probability of getting caught for dishonesty at the country level. We theorize: Decision-makers adopt avaricious love of money aspiration as a lens and frame dishonesty in the gains–losses domain (pay satisfaction–dissatisfaction, Level 1) and high–low probability (CPI, Level 2) to maximize expected utility and ultimate serenity. We challenge the myth: Pay satisfaction curbs dishonesty across nations consistently. Cross-level three-dimensional visualization demonstrates (6500 managers in 32 countries across six continents): With high aspiration, pay dissatisfaction excites the highest- (third-highest) avaricious justice-seeking dishonesty in high (medium) CPI nations; pay satisfaction provokes the second-highest avaricious opportunity-seizing dishonesty in low CPI entities—maximizing expected utility. Low aspiration and high pay satisfaction consistently create low dishonesty—achieving ultimate serenity. We expand prospect theory from a micro and individual-level theory to a cross-level theory of monetary wisdom across 32 nations, providing novel insights to business ethics, the environment, and responsibility.

The Impact of Environmental Technological Innovations on CO2 Emissions: The Case of OECD Countries

    Akyol, Mehmet; Mete, Emrullah

Global warming and climate change, caused by greenhouse gas emissions, have compelled all countries to reconsider their production factors. Developing technologies to reduce emission volumes has been one of the priority targets for countries. This study investigated the impact of environmental technological innovations on CO2 emissions in 18 OECD members. The panel generalized method of moments (GMM)was employed in the study to produce estimates for the period between 2005 and 2018. Energy consumption, economic growth (GDP), and technological innovation data were used as independent variables in the study, CO2 emissions were used as dependent variable, whereas the number of patents preventing climate change was used as a technological innovation indicator. The analysis results showed that a 1% increase in patent applications for preventing climate change reduced CO2 emissions by 0.02%. However, a 1% increase in energy consumption caused an increase of 0.56% in CO2 emissions. Finally, the 1% increase in the GDP growth rate caused an increase of 0.002% in CO2 emissions.

Online learning in vocational school: focus on students' perceptions

Aydin, Sinan; Akkan, Yasar; Arpaz, Ercan; Koparan, Bulent; Iaman, A; Eskicumali, A

In this study, we describe vocational school students' practices and perceptions of online learning based on interviews and observations. First, we identify student characteristics within online classes. Then, we report student perceptions of online lectures. Finally, we summarize our recommendations to improve the online teaching. The methodology used in this study was qualitative data-collection techniques to obtain vocational school student views on online education and educational processes. For this purpose, two stages of data collection were used in this study these were one-on-one open-ended interviews and think-aloud observation. According to data analysis from this study, communication between students and teachers has a basic effect on shaping students' perceptions and approach to online learning. Also, they have some negative ideas of using and implementations of technology in lectures. Included in this finding is that the meaning assigned by students to any technological material used in lectures is directly connected with the way this material is implemented. Another important finding is that planning of course, assessment and curriculum plays basic role in student's concentrate on lectures and success in online learning. We investigated only a few of the possible relationships between perception of the online environment, the technological materials used in lectures, students' approach to online learning, and students' perceptions of this learning way. Although Web resources and community were mentioned in this study, they may play a more effective role in student online learning than was analyzed in this study. Some additional factors that may effect student perceptions needed to be investigated are the link between perception and outcome, faculty use and knowledge, faculty perceptions and training. Kalimaki Bey in Ottoman Foreign Affairs: His Career and the Role in the 1849 Hungarian Refugee Crisis

    Yilmaz, Banu; Erdogan, Serkan

This study examines the transformation of the Ottoman Empire's foreign policy during the Tanzimat period and the construction of the empire's image in Europe through the life and diplomatic activities of Alexandros Kalimaki Bey, a prominent diplomat. The main objective of this article is to analyze the career of Kalimaki, who was of Romanian origin and from a Greek family in Phanar, and who stands out as the first non-Muslim subject of the Ottoman Empire to serve as a permanent ambassador to Europe, particularly his crisis management during the Hungarian Refugee Crisis, within its historical context. The research proceeds with a chronological and qualitative method based on primary archival documents of the Ottoman Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Kalimaki's diplomatic reports sent from London and Paris. Data obtained from archival documents have been evaluated within their historical context by considering them alongside studies in the literature. Through this method, the transformation and crisis management processes in Ottoman foreign policy have been qualitatively assessed through the diplomatic correspondence and reports of the period. Within this framework, the study also aims to highlight the interaction between Kalimaki Bey's personal diplomatic capacity and the new diplomatic approach adopted by the Ottoman State after the Tanzimat reforms.
