Green development: Case of Turkey, Norway, and China

    Doğru, Bülent; Beken, Hikmet Gülçin

The focus of this chapter is to assess green or sustainable development concept because of its increased importance throughout the world. Droughts, environmental degradation, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions are important problems that the humankind have been facing since the Industrial Revolution. Renewable energy sources can be used to overcome these problems. The general tendency of modern-day societies is to transform traditional production techniques and development models to new renewable energy sources and also move towards to sustainable development path. Therefore, this study tries to explain current status of Norway, China and Turkey in terms of their renewable energy sources and policy implementations.

The effect of the political leader's level of "Trust" on the "Credibility" perception of the political messages: Case of the Turkish general parliamentary election on November 1, 2015

    Güllüpunar, Hasan; Aslan, Emre Ş.

Trust is an important factor in the individual's perception of the environment. Even if trust is interpreted as a sense growing voluntarily, it is actually formed as a result of perception management. In this regard, it is one of the significant concepts that needs to be addressed in political communication in which persuasion is the basis. A well-managed trust process affects voter behaviour. The study investigates the effect of the trustworthiness of the political party leaders with a group in the parliament after the General Parliamentary Election on November 1, 2015 in Turkey on the credibility of the messages given to the voters by their parties in the election campaigns. The study has been performed in two stages on the same sample group consisting of the students of Faculty of Communication, Gümüshane University. It has been concluded in the study that political leaders' level of trust has a significant effect on the credibility levels of the messages given to the voters in the election campaign.

Religious Social Movements and Economic Welfare in Modern Turkey

Köroğlu, Cemile Zehra; Köroğlu, Muhammet Ali

In all societies, there have been some movements that point out social, political, economic, ideological, or moral problems or aim at partial or complete change. This chapter discusses the new meanings attributed to the concept of social movements in the postmodern era. A theoretical framework is proposed to understand the nature of social movements since the 1960s and to demonstrate their differences from classical movements. Turkey provides a particularly rich context with high potential for social movements, both with secular and religious aspirations. Religious social movements have shown quite a tense relationship with the state throughout the history of the republic; yet, they have gained power and prosperity through evolving liberal economic policies since the 1980s. Therefore, resource mobilization and new social movement paradigms are used in this chapter to explain Turkey’s religious social movements today.

Electronic word-of-mouth: Factors affecting consumer review writing behavior on electronic platforms

    Yildiz, Emel; Ayyildiz, Hasan

This chapter examines the effects of word-of-mouth motivations and culture on electronic word-of-mouth behavior. This chapter also focuses on the effects of cultural values on electronic word-of-mouth behavior. Within the context of the study, online forums in which consumers write comments have been used. The data was obtained from an electronic survey provided to 561 consumers. The reliability of scales has been tested via the Cronbach's Alfa Method and the validity of scales has been tested by Factor Analysis. After determining the reliability and validity of the scales, research hypotheses were tested by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Multiple Regression Analysis. The findings show that motivation and culture have positive effects on electronic word-of-mouth behavior. This chapter also attempts to explain the effects of cultural values on electronic word-of-mouth behavior, and it is found that while uncertainty avodiance and masculinity have positive effects, individualism and power distance have negative effects on electronic word-of-mouth behavior.

Geophysical approach for the detection and evaluation of geothermal energy potential stimulated from geology and tectonics in Cappadocia Region (Central Turkey)

    Maden, Nafiz

Geothermal energy, which is a renewable energy source, can be used to heat buildings or generate electricity and does not contribute to air pollution when used properly, and it is heat continuously produced inside the earth that generates geological phenomena on a planetary scale. Central Anatolia is a triangular region which is limited by North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) to the north, East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) to the east, Dead sea FZ and Cyprus FZ to the south. The tectonic structure of the Cappadocia region is composed of NW trending Salt Lake Fault Zone extending approximately 220 km in length, Salanda fault zone extending 140 km, and NE trending Central Anatolian Fault zone more than 700 km in length. There are 82 geothermal regions having 171 sources with low and high temperatures due to the young volcanism and tectonic activities in this region. These geothermal regions caused by fault and fracture zones extending to the mantle parallel to the tectonic zones of the region and are situated on the areas having low Curie, high heat flow values. The Curie point depth, heat flow and geothermal gradient values determined from geophysical data of the region are correlated with tectonics and geothermal potential of the region. While the minimum crustal thickness is 38 km, the maximum crustal thickness is 41 km in Mt. Hasan and Mt. Erciyes. The Curie point depth value is computed as 13.7 km determined from magnetic anomaly data of the region. The geothermal gradient and heat flow values are estimated to be 42.3 °Ckm-1, 88.8 mWm-2, respectively. Geothermal systems and reservoir temperature of geothermal sources should be understood clearly to provide sustainability of the project with respect to the economical conditions. Various geothermometers methods have been used to determine the reservoir temperature in order to estimate the field of usage of the thermal water before the drilling stage because of the high price of the borehole. Silica geothermometers method applied to the SiO2 content of the sources gives the best information about the reservoir temperature. The maximum temperatures and depth to reservoir of the geothermal sources located in the Kayseri region are estimated as 131.8 °C, 1.14 km, respectively, in Kayseri region. It is concluded from these values that the Cappadocia region has very high geothermal potential caused by tectonic activities after the Late Triassic and partial melting of the lower crust.

Factors affecting electronic service brand equity

    Yildiz, Salih; Kurtuldu, Hüseyin Sabri

The purpose of this study is to determine the factors affecting electronic service brand equity and to investigate consumers' perceptions of the electronic service brands they prefer. Additionally, the study, based on the Rios and Riquelme's electronic brand equity model, determines whether demographic characteristics of consumers cause significant differences regarding perceptions of electronic service brand equity. Within the context of this study, an electronic service site in the book/magazine sector was employed. The survey sample size was 675 as a result of an electronic survey administered on selected Websites. The reliability of the scales used in the survey was tested via Cronbach's Alfa Method and the validity of the scales were tested via Factor Analysis. Hypotheses of the survey were tested using difference methods (e.g., ANOVA, multiple regression analysis, T-test). It was determined that e-image, e-quality, e-loyalty, e-trust, e-awareness, and e-value factors are effective for developing electronic service brand equity. Furthermore, it can be claimed that age, income, and education cause significant differences regarding perceptions of electronic service brand equity, while gender, occupation, and marital status do not cause significant differences of perceptions regarding the same.
