Altin, Ozan; Ozturk, Samet; Topcam, Huseyin; Karatas, Ozan; Marra, Francesco; Erdogdu, Ferruh
This chapter brings a perspective to issues related to heating uniformity and modeling approaches of novel electrothermal technologies such as radio-frequency (RF) and microwave (MW) heating. Both RF (3 kHz–300 MHz) and MW (300 MHz–300 GHz) waves within the electromagnetic spectrum cause heat generation within foods as a result of molecular polarization and dipole rotation of existing water molecules (polar). RF and MW heating shows a great potential to achieve volumetric and rapid heat generation within food products, maintaining food quality and satisfying safety regulations in food industry compared with conventional heating systems.

Introduction Consumers daily face lots of purchase decisions when they are buying products and services (Bas et al., 2016). They rely on some certain elements of the products to make the right decision about which product to buy. Some rely on extrinsic cues such as brand, country of origin (COO), store name, and price, while others take into account intrinsic cues of the intended product such as taste, smell, design, and durability (Wall et al., 1991; Chao, 1998). Consumers are inclined to make inferences regarding a given product depending on the information and experience level that they have with it (Johansson et al., 1985; Han, 1989, 1990). There is a well-known positive relationship between price and the quality (Zeithaml, 1988). COO information also provides consumers with some insight about the quality of the product (Li and Wyer, 1994) as such consumers attribute some certain features to certain countries (Ahmed and d’Astous, 1993; Verlegh and Steenkamp, 1999). Consumers develop stereotypes concerning “made in” labels of the products (Han, 1990; Ahmed et al., 2004). For instance, Germany is famous for its high-quality and high-durability automobiles; Japan is a well-known country in terms of its high-technology products especially in electronics; Italy and France are good at design and fashion and so on. There is also a negative association between some countries and consumer’s perception. For example, Chinese products are perceived negatively in terms of quality (Verlegh and Steenkamp, 1999; Kinra, 2006; Kerboucheet al., 2012). As a consequence,….

Introduction Disasters cause losses in various dimensions throughout the world. They lead to social, psychological, political and cultural changes as well as economic burdens for countries. People have been facing disasters since the beginning of human history. Information about disasters occurring in different parts of the world has been found in the oldest known records. Thousands of people have lost their lives in these disasters. (Akgiray et al., 2004: 77). Natural disasters cause significant economic losses and the loss of life for countries (Erkal and Degerliyurt, 2009). According to the statistics in Turkey, natural disasters result in economic losses equal to 1.1 % of Gross National Product each year (Aktürk and Albeni, 2002). However, considering indirect economic losses such as loss of production and unemployment, total loss is estimated to be greater than 1 % of gross national product (Erkal and Degerliyurt, 2009). It is possible to estimate the economic effects of the disasters by considering factors which are affected by the disasters. When the 1999 Marmara Earthquakes in Turkey is evaluated in terms of both loss of income and loss of national wealth, the total estimated cost is between 9 million dollars and 13 billion dollars according to the State Planning Organization of Turkey and 6-10 billion dollars according to the World Bank (Akgiray et al., 2004: 77). Estimations about the economic effects of the 1999 Marmara Earthquakes suggest the following figures: the reconstruction of damaged buildings is estimated….
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2019Eu-China relations: Current and future challenges and opportunities
Uğur, Ömer
While EU-China relations are often characterized by a clear divergence of values and political norms, the scope and size of the relationship between the two sides in the past twenty-five years has been remarkable. The basis of this development lies in the considerable expansion of the economic interaction and substantial growth in trade between the two sides since the early 1990. Relations between the EU and China are now so dense as well as complex. In this study, development of the relations between the EU and China will be discussed and it will also be expressed why and how much this relation is significant for both parties. While doing this, the main factors that enable the relations between the EU and China and that prevent aforementioned relations to deepen will be discussed and opportunities, expectations and problems these bring forth will be mentioned. Thus, this study will try to provide an answer why the EU and China experience significant conflicts and even come across each other from time to time in the recent years will be answered.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2019Working capital management and firm performance of turkish companies
Erdoğan, Mahmut
Introduction Working capital management is vital for corporate finance because of its contribution to shareholder value by maintaining the balance between profitability and risk. In particular, firms that invest less in working capital are assumed to have higher returns and risks, while firms investing heavily in working capital are assumed to have lower returns and risks (Banos-Caballero et al., 2012). Effective working capital management is very important because it affects the performance and liquidity of the firm. The main objective of working capital management is to ensure the optimal balance among working capital components. Effective working capital management is an essential part of the overall company strategy to create shareholder value. Therefore, companies try to maintain the optimal working capital level to maximize their firm value (Vural et al., 2012). Effective working capital enables companies to be successful and to survive, while poor and mismanagement is the main reason for small business failures (Tahir and Anuar, 2016). The primary purpose of working capital management is to provide the appropriate liquidity for the company’s sustainability and activities and to fulfill its short-term financial liabilities. Therefore, current assets and short-term liabilities are important components of total assets and hence careful evaluation of total assets is of utmost importance. However, working capital management is a complex task because of an inverse relationship between liquidity and profitability. While the primary purpose of any company is profit maximization, it also needs to obtain the appropriate….
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2019Social memory and cultural identity
Ak, Muammer
Introduction The social memory that reproduces itself through daily life practices is based on the knowledge and experiences of individuals about the past. Although social memory is nurtured by individual memories, it is clear that not all individual memories can be found in social memory. Because the recollections of the past are historical events to explain today. In this regard, recalling the past is as important as how the past is remembered. There is a mutual relationship between social memory and individual memory. In this context, individual memory affects social memory and also individual memory is affected by social memory. The individual is nourished from the social memory through the process of socialization and grasps the meaning of the world of culture and values of the society in which s/he was born. The coming up of the events in the social memory in daily life affects the individual memory and is transferred to the future through individuals. This individual interaction with social memory allows individuals in everyday life to reconstruct social memory. In brief, it can be said that individuals rebuild social memory by bringing the events that took place in the social memory into the agenda in their daily lives. Daily life refers to an area in which social memory is both reproduced and transmitted. It can be said that cultural memory is a formation as a result of the transfer of a certain life style, custom, tradition and the behaviors which have been continued….

Doğan, Melike Demir
Mucositis is defined as inflammatory and/or ulcerative lesions of the oral and/or gastrointestinal system. It is one of the side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy used in cancer treatment. The incidence rate of mucositis is 15-40% in standard-dose chemotherapy, 76-100% in high-dose chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant, and 100% in radiation therapy applied for head-neck. While oral mucositis can cause pain as well as sensitivity in mouth and throat, it can also severely affect oral functions such as swallowing, taste, and speaking. Severe mucositis leads to increase the pain in the oral mucosa. Many pharmacological and non-pharmacological options are available to treat mucositis. The literature reveals studies looking at pharmacological approaches including oral care involving 0.9% NaCl and NaHCO3, benzydamine hydrochloride, saline mouthwashes, calcium phosphate mouthwashes, magic mouthwash, and mouthwashes containing G-CSF and GM-CSF. Likewise, studies looking at non-pharmacological approaches focus on cryotherapy, low energy laser treatment, hypnosis, herbal approaches, honey, and black mulberry molasses.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2019An assessment of imbalanced control chart pattern recognition by artificial neural networks
Ünlü, Ramazan
Manual detection of abnormality in control data is an annoying work which requires a specialized person. Automatic detection might be simpler and effective. Various methodologies such as ANN, SVM, Fuzzy Logic, etc. have been implemented into the control chart patterns to detect abnormal patterns in real time. In general, control chart data is imbalanced, meaning the rate of minority class (abnormal pattern) is much lower than the rate of normal class (normal pattern). To take this fact into consideration, authors implemented a weighting strategy in conjunction with ANN and investigated the performance of weighted ANN for several abnormal patterns, then compared its performance with regular ANN. This comparison is also made under different conditions, for example, abnormal and normal patterns are separable, partially separable, inseparable and the length of data is fixed as being 10,20, and 30 for each. Based on numerical results, weighting policy can better predict in some of the cases in terms of classifying samples belonging to minority class to the correct class.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2019Main reasons of government reforms in Turkey and the legislation/reform efforts between 1990 and 2007
Kalkişim, Hasan Mahmut
Introduction In today’s world where the idea of “the only thing that does not change is change itself” comes true, dazzling developments in the economic, technological, political, social, and cultural areas materialize, and administrative and economic transformations occur in parallel with these developments. The fact that the wind of change and transformation took place all over the world forced the countries to embrace this wind, and with this effect, the countries with the fear of falling behind began to redesign their economic, political, and administrative structures within the framework of this transformation. In this direction, various modern management approaches have been applied in different countries. Concepts such as total quality management, strategic management, learning organization, and accountability started to be used in the public administration of countries. “New Public Management Approach” which emerged in the international arena especially after the 1980s directs the reform efforts of the countries. In Turkey, citizens from the politicians, businessmen, and scientists to the bureaucrats, small shopkeepers, and ordinary people express that there is a need for the re-arrangement of public sphere, and public sphere needs to be designed in such a way that it provides services at a sufficient and effective level (Parlak, 2005: 182). Historically, the reform efforts in Turkey started in Ottoman Empire time. Reform efforts took the form of westernization after the political reforms made in the Ottoman Empire in 1839 (called Tanzimat in Turkish). Reform efforts did not change its….
