Duran, Celal; Ozdes, Duygu; Mentese, Emre; Bektas, Hakan
A facile and sensitive method predicated on carrier element free coprecipitation (CEFC) using 2-(2-(2-(4-bromobenzyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-1-yl)acetyl)-N-ethylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide (BIMANEC) is reported for trace determination of Cu(II) and Cd(II) in vegetables and water. BIMANEC was used for the first time for the quantitative determination of these trace heavy metals. Flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) was used for quantitation. The preconcentration conditions were optimized with respect to pH (8.0), BIMANEC mass (4.0 mg), volume of sample (100 mL), standing time (5 min), and centrifugation time and rate (3 min and 2500 rpm). The influence of potentially interfering ions was scrutinized for the recovery of analyte ions. Under the optimum conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) were 0.51 and 2.28 µg L−1 for Cu(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The relative standard deviations were < 5% for both. The recoveries from the spiked vegetable samples were from 94.9 to 102.8% and from the spiked water samples between 93.2 and 101.6%. Consequently the developed new, facile, rapid, and highly efficient CEFC process was employed for the trace determination of Cu(II) and Cd(II).
- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions by a natural moss
Ozeken, Sengul Tugba; Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal
The aim of the present research is to develop a new, fast, and easily applicable adsorption method for the removal of hazardous Cr(VI) and Cu(II) ions from the polluted industrial wastewater by using Racomitrium ericoides (Brid.) Brid. (REB), a type of moss. Although there are studies in the literature in which different moss species were used for the removal of heavy metals (HMs), REB was used for the first time in this study. Adsorption experiments were carried out through a batch system. The impact of significant experimental parameters showed that the optimum values of initial pH were 2.0 for Cr(VI) retention and 5.0 for Cu(II), and 360 min was selected as the optimum contact time for both HMs. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was applied to create a predictive model for the uptake efficiency of HMs. Adsorption kinetics of Cr(VI) and Cu(II) ions followed the pseudo-second order model. The maximum adsorption capacities of REB identified through the Langmuir model were 41.2 mg g-1 for Cr(VI) and 22.7 mg g-1 for Cu(II) ions. The results of the study demonstrated that REB can be utilized as an abundant, low-cost, and effective adsorbent in removal of HMs from aqueous solutions.

Elimination of the matrix effect is a major challenge in developing a method for the quantification of heavy metals (HMs) in water samples. In this regard, the current research describes the simultaneous analyses of Cu(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) ions in water matrices through flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) after preconcentration with carrier element-free co-precipitation (CEFC) technique by the help of an organic co-precipitant, 3-{[5-(4-Chlorobenzyl)-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl]-methyl}-4-[2,4-(dichlorobenzylidene)amino]-1H-1,2,4- triazole-5(4H)-thione (CCMBATT). Based on our literature research, CCMBATT was employed for the first time in this study as an organic co-precipitant for the preconcentration of HMs. Factors such as solution pH, concentration of co-precipitant, sample volume, standing time, centrifugation rate, and time were thoroughly examined and optimized to achieve the highest efficiency in terms of HM recovery. The limits of detection (LODs) (with 10 number of tests) of 0.54, 0.34, and 1.95 μg L-1 and the relative standard deviations (RSD %) of 2.1, 3.3, and 3.0 were determined for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions, respectively. Recovery results of HMs for the spiked samples were in the range of 92.8-101.0%, demonstrating the trueness of the method and its applicability to the water samples matrix.
- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2023A facile and sensitive coprecipitation method coupled with flame atomic absorption spectrometry for quantification of Cu(II) ions in complex matrices
Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal; Bektas, Hakan; Mentese, Emre
In the present investigation, the application of an organic coprecipitant, 2-[5,6-dichloro-2-(2-bromobenzyl)-1H-benzimidazole-1-yl]acetohydrazide (DIBBA), for separation and preconcentration of Cu(II) ions in fruit and water samples through a new carrier element free coprecipitation (CEFC) method was researched for the first time. Flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) was used for the analyses of Cu(II) ions. The main effective experimental factors such as solution pH, DIBBA quantity, waiting time, centrifuge speed and duration and volume of sample on the recovery efficiency of Cu(II) ions were explored in detail. Under the optimized conditions the preconcentration factor (PF), relative standard deviation (RSD), and limits of detection (LOD) was achieved as 50, 3.4 % and 0.44 µg L-1, respectively. No interference effects were detected by virtue of the presence of various foreign ions. Satisfactory recoveries (in the range of 94.4 to 103.0 %) in the environmental sample matrix were acquired. After being validated the recommended selective, low cost, simple and rapid CEFC method by spike/recovery tests, it was properly implemented for the low levels detection of Cu(II) ions in sour cherry, mulberry, apple, and peach as fruit samples and stream and sea water samples without any significant matrix effects.
- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2021Evaluating the chemical and metal contamination of commercial raki, a grape-based alcoholic beverage from turkey
Menevseoglu, Ahmed; Cabaroglu, Turgut
Turkish Raki is one of the most consumed alcoholic beverages in Turkey. The chemical and metal contamination of alcoholic beverages is a threat to human health and lowers the quality of the product. Ethyl carbamate and furfural are carcinogenic to animals, and have been classified as Group 2A and 3 agents respectively by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Factors, such as raw materials, process time and storage, affect metal concentrations in beverages. Limits for chemicals and metals in Raki have not yet been established by the Turkish agency. The present study aimed to evaluate the chemical and metal contamination of commercial Turkish Raki. Thirty-seven different types of Turkish Raki were purchased from local markets in Turkey. Ethyl carbamate (EC) and furfural (FR) levels were measured by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). Arsenic, copper, lead, and zinc levels were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). None of the Raki samples contained EC. Furfural was not detected in commercial Raki samples but only in illegal Raki samples. Ethanol and methanol levels complied with Turkish regulation. Our data shows that commercial Raki from Turkey was contaminated by very low amounts of arsenic (<LOD-0.02 mg/L), copper (0.05-0.41 mg/L), lead (< LOD- 0.03 mg/L) and zinc (0.01-0.39 mg/L).
- MakaleYalnız künye2021Preparation of melon peel biochar/CoFe2O4 as a new adsorbent for the separation and preconcentration of Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) ions by solid-phase extraction in water and vegetable samples
Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal
The present research describes the successful preparation of melon peel biochar modified with CoFe2O4 (MPBC/CoFe2O4) followed by its usage as a new sorbent to separate, preconcentrate, and determine the toxic heavy metal ions by magnetic solid-phase extraction. The metal ion desorption was performed by 0.1 M HCl solution with a volume of 5.0 mL. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was utilized for detection of the analyte levels. SEM–EDX, TEM, XRD, and FTIR techniques were carried out to illuminate the structure of MPBC/CoFe2O4. The fundamental variables affecting the adsorption and elution efficiencies of the analyte ions including solution pH, MPBC/CoFe2O4 amount, type and concentration of eluent, adsorption and desorption equilibrium time, and sample volume were optimized. The detection limits were calculated as 0.41, 1.82, and 3.16 µg L−1 for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions, respectively, with the relative standard deviation of lower than 4.2%. There were no substantial interference effects on the analyte ion recovery due to the presence of foreign ions at high levels. Five minutes of contact time was adequate to attain the adsorption equilibrium. The adsorption capacity of MPBC/CoFe2O4 was obtained as 106.4, 65.4, and 188.7 mg g−1 for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions, respectively, by utilizing Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-second order model is favorable to identify the adsorption kinetics. The method was validated by spike/recovery test, and then, it was successfully implemented to determine the aforementioned analyte levels in sea and stream water, pepper, black cabbage, eggplant, and tomato samples.

Hazelnut husk (HH), an agricultural waste, was converted to carbonaceous material by chemical activation using potassium acetate. The produced activated carbon (KAHHAC) was characterized by FTIR, SEM, N2 adsorption–desorption experiments, CHN elemental analysis, and determination of moisture, ash, and point of zero charge. KAHHAC was used for the batch adsorption of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Optimum pH and contact time were found to be 5.0 and 240 minutes, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium data were described well by the Langmuir equation providing 105.3 mg g−1 Cu(II) adsorption capacity. The pseudo-second-order model successfully described the kinetic of Cu(II) adsorption by KAHHAC. The adsorbed Cu(II) onto KAHHAC was completely desorbed by 0.5 M nitric acid. In conclusion, HH activated carbon (AC) produced by the potassium acetate activation method is a very useful and efficient sorbent material for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution.
- MakaleYalnız künye2014Improvement of Coercivity and Curie Temperature of Sintered Nd-Fe-B Permanent Magnets by Addition of Cu and Ni
Başoğlu, M.; Yanmaz, E.
Sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets are some of the strongest magnetic materials showing magnetic properties. Blending addition is frequently performed in order to improve the magnetic properties of these materials. In this work, high-melting point Ni and low-melting point Cu were added to Nd15Fe77B8 ingot by blending. As a result of structural analysis, it was observed that 0.2 wt% Cu + Ni addition improved the structure of the material; on the other hand, excessive addition resulted in porosity. It was also observed that 0.2 wt% addition improved the magnetic properties, and Curie temperature increased with increasing addition ratio.

A new solid phase extraction (SPE) method has been developed for the selective separation and preconcentration of Cu (II) ions in food and water samples prior to its flame atomic absorption spectrometry determination. The method is based on the adsorption of the Cu(II)-2-{[4-Amino-3-(4-methylphenyl-5- oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl]acetyl}-N-phenyl hydrazinecarbothioamide complex on Amberlite XAD-8 resin. The metal complex retained on the resin was eluted with 7.5 mL of 2.0 mol L-1 HCl in acetone. The optimum conditions for the SPE of Cu(II) ions were investigated, and the method was subsequently applied to sea water, stream water, rice, tea, and tobacco samples for the determination of Cu(II) levels.
