Research on sustainable consumption has largely emphasized secular motivations, leaving the psychological role of spirituality/religiosity underexplored within Muslim societies. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the relationship between spirituality and sustainable consumption behaviors (SCBs) among Muslim consumers in Türkiye, with environmental and health consciousness examined as parallel mediating mechanisms. Data were collected from 414 adult Muslim consumers through an online survey and analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural path analysis via Hayes’ PROCESS macro (Model 4). The empirical findings indicate that spirituality is significantly and positively associated with sustainable consumption behaviors both directly and indirectly. Environmental consciousness emerged as a numerically stronger mediating pathway than health consciousness in the relationship between spirituality and sustainable consumption. Notably, when both mediators are included in the model, the direct path from spirituality to sustainable consumption behaviors becomes non-significant, consistent with a full-mediation pattern in the estimated model, in line with the value–attitude–behavior hierarchy. These results suggest that spirituality’s association with consumption decisions is, within the estimated model, transmitted through intervening attitudinal states. The study suggests that sustainable consumption initiatives in Muslim contexts can be meaningfully strengthened by integrating eco-friendly practices with consumers’ underlying spiritual and religious values.

Arpa Zemzemoğlu, Tuba Eda; Eker, Tülin
The growing global population, the decline in edible food sources, technological advancements, and limited time have led to significant changes in society's eating habits. The increasing preference for ready-to-eat and semi-prepared foods has also resulted in higher consumption of food additives. In today's conditions, food additives are used at various stages of the food supply chain, from farm to fork, for different purposes. However, excessive intake of food additives may have negative health effects. For this reason, there has been a growing interest in natural food additives in recent years. Due to their functional properties, edible mushrooms are widely used as versatile ingredients in food product development. This chapter aims to determine the potential of edible mushrooms as food additives. Edible mushrooms can be used as meat substitutes in various food products, reducing fat and animal protein content while increasing dietary fiber and amino acid levels. When used as fat replacers, they lower fat levels in processed foods and enhance sensory properties. When incorporated as flour substitutes in baked goods, they boost dietary fiber, protein content, and antioxidant capacity. Additionally, mushrooms act as natural salt and phosphate substitutes, reducing sodium levels in meat products and replacing synthetic additives while maintaining sensory acceptability and product quality. Mushrooms also have great potential as natural colorants. Their natural origin, low-cost and high-yield production, and wide color spectrum make them suitable for use as food additives. These multifunctional roles of edible mushrooms highlight their potential to enhance nutritional profiles and promote sustainability in food formulations.

Alkowlani, Amir Towfiq Hasan; Beldüz, Ali Osman; Çanakçi, Sabriye; Bektaş, Kadriye İnan; Ay, Fulya; Özyurt, Taner; Yıldız, Oktay
Cheese whey (CW), an abundant and nutrient-rich byproduct of cheese production, accounts for approximately 85% of milk volume and is generated globally in quantities reaching 145–200 million tons annually. Despite its biochemical complexity and high organic load, CW remains underutilized in microbial biotechnology. Its pollutant potential is up to 100 times higher than domestic sewage due to extreme biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), high nutrient content, and acidity. Untreated discharge causes severe oxygen depletion, damages aquatic ecosystems, degrades soil, and contributes to climate change. This study evaluates CW as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to synthetic bacterial growth media. Ten bacterial strains were cultured for 17 h in different forms of CW fresh, aged (up to two years), and dried and compared with standard Luria Bertani (LB) medium. Bacterial growth was assessed using optical density at 600 nm (OD₆₀₀), and protein yields were measured in µg/µL. CW supported growth ranged from OD₆₀₀ 2.36–4.46, comparable to 2.53–4.16 in LB, with protein yields between 0.19 and 0.43 µg/µL versus 0.18–0.44 µg/µL in LB. These findings demonstrate that CW can effectively support bacterial proliferation and protein production, offering a novel valorization route for a major agro-industrial pollutant while reducing environmental harm and fermentation costs.

Erol, Ismail; Oztel, Ahmet; Peker, Iskender; Ar, Ilker Murat; Benli, Tolga; Turan, İsmet
Charging the increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) in use requires the deployment of EV charging station networks (EVCSN). However, there are various challenges to deploying EVCSN in a sustainable manner. Türkiye, a developing country, should also build a robust EVCSN to encourage future adoption of EVs as the country’s market for EVs has been rapidly growing. The literature review concludes that no previous study has systematically explored challenges to the sustainable deployment of EVCSN. The goal of this study is, therefore, twofold: first, it identifies those challenges through the lenses of commonly used theories. Second, it explores them using a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework that incorporates a rough-derived interval-valued neutrosophic set (R-IVN)-based ISM into MICMAC. By deriving interval neutrosophic information from single-valued expert inputs using rough number operators, the proposed approach more accurately captures epistemic uncertainty and variability in expert judgments compared to conventional interval-based models. The method is further validated through a novel Dice–Sørensen similarity index-based simulation approach. The findings of this study suggest that developing government policies and regulations and addressing the existence of vertically integrated companies are the critical challenges with higher driving powers. These findings provide key responsibilities for stakeholders, including urban municipalities, in developing guidelines for EVCSN deployment.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Building Resilience in Global Tourism: A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis of Indicators for Sustainable Development
Erol, Ismail; Dogru, Tarik; Oztel, Ahmet; Bilgihan, Anil; Peker, Iskender; Neuhofer, Irem Onder
The primary perspective of this study is the global tourism industry (GTI) as an interconnected supply chain network, encompassing both tourism firms (e.g., hotels, airlines, and operators) and destinations (e.g., local communities and ecosystems). This industry-level focus allows for analyzing resilience indicators that bridge firm-specific capabilities with destination-wide vulnerabilities, rather than isolating one over the other. Using a mixed-method approach, this research conceptualizes resilience through various management theories. First, it identifies critical resilience indicators across institutional, societal, economic, and ecological dimensions. Second, these indicators are analyzed with a novel Spherical Fuzzy Interpretive Structural Modeling and Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification framework, utilizing expert opinions to uncover complex interdependencies among indicators. The findings of this study highlight that effective government policies, robust incentive mechanisms, advanced digital infrastructure, dynamic capabilities, and ecologically sustainable tourism practices are key drivers of resilience. However, socioeconomic impacts, tourist satisfaction, and price competitiveness emerge as highly dependent outcomes influenced by these drivers. This study also introduces the Adaptive Global-Local Interaction Theory, a new framework that integrates global influences with local realities to enhance tourism resilience. By offering a comprehensive framework and practical guidelines, this research equips policymakers and stakeholders with actionable strategies to bolster the industry's capacity to anticipate, adapt to, and recover from crises, promoting sustainable development amidst volatile global conditions.

Agrivoltaic systems, which integrate photovoltaic (PV) panels with the usage of agricultural land, emerge as a promising strategy by facilitating the simultaneous generation of renewable energy alongside the cultivation of various crops within the same area. This research is centered on the design and implementation of an agrivoltaic system that is specifically customized for the cultivation of wheat and sugar beet in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. The primary objective of this research is to optimize the spatial arrangement of the PV panels to achieve a balance between the generation of energy and the productivity of the crops. Through a detailed assessment of shading effects and Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) levels, this investigation will endeavor to unravel the complex interplay between panel configuration and its consequential impacts on both plant growth and energy output. In this investigation, the shading impacts attributed to three distinct configurations—specifically, the conventional solar power plant (SPP), the intermittently arranged panel layout, and the intermittently arranged V-shaped panel configuration—were assessed, and their appropriateness for the cultivation of wheat and sugar beet was evaluated. The V-shaped design, which additionally facilitates rainwater collection, yielded an enhanced PPFD value across the three designated regions beneath the panels.

Al, I.; Akbulut Yildiz, G.; Yildiz, B.
This study investigates the impact of clean energy technologies, health expenditure, and economic growth on environmental quality using the Fourier Engle-Granger cointegration method for the United States in the 1974–2022 period. The Fourier approach successfully identifies gradual structural shifts and nonlinear dynamics in long-run relations, which are frequent in macroeconomic and environmental time series but are typically overlooked by standard approaches. The findings show that clean energy research and development investment—specifically in energy efficiency, renewable resources, and nuclear technologies—and health expenditures significantly positively impact environmental quality. However, economic growth has a negative impact environmental quality in the United States. These results highlight the necessity of integrating environmental objectives into energy and health policy and prioritizing investment in sustainable technologies to achieve ecological sustainability in the long term.

Seferoğlu, Mehmet Tevfik; Aksüt, Yavuz Selim; Seferoğlu, Ayşegül Güneş
This study evaluates the mechanical performance and sustainability potential of fiber-reinforced concrete incorporating mine tailings as the fine aggregate and waste tire wire as the reinforcing fiber. The concrete mixtures contained 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6% waste tire wire with the natural fine aggregate replaced entirely with Pb-Zn-Cu tailings. The mixtures were tested for porosity, water absorption, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, toughness, fracture energy, and ductility to assess their mechanical performance and durability. The mine tailings improved the microstructure and reduced water absorption, particularly with tire wire. Using waste tire wire improved the compressive, tensile, and flexural performance; in particular, W-6 showed a 18.2% rise in compressive strength and a more than twofold increase in flexural strength relative to the control mix. The flexural toughness and fracture energy rose by up to 161%, while the ductility peaked at a fiber content of 0.2%. These gains were attributed to fiber crack-bridging and post-cracking energy absorption. The dual-waste system also reduced porosity, improved durability, and demonstrated strong potential for rigid pavement applications such as highways, industrial yards, and airport runways that require high fatigue resistance and a long service life. Beyond technical performance, this approach offers a sustainable solution that lowers maintenance, reduces life-cycle costs, and aligns with circular economy principles.

Yilanci, Veli; Adali, Zafer; Çelik, Orkun; Bari, Bilgin
Ecological balance is an indicator of environmental degradation, which is computed as the difference between biocapacity and ecological footprint. In this study, we examine whether the effect of shocks on the ecological balance is permanent or temporary in the EU-15 countries, considering the period from 1961 to 2018. The application of unit root tests, with and without a Fourier function, indicates that the effects of shocks are temporary in only four countries. To reveal the persistence of shocks at different frequencies, that is, the short-, medium-, and long-run, we decomposed the ecological balance series by using the Discrete Wavelet Transform method. The unit root test results show that the effects of shocks are temporary in all countries in the short-run. However, the results also show that the shocks are temporary in nine countries in the medium-run and ten countries in the long-run. Thus, the implemented policies to balance ecology are not effective in the short-run but are effective in only six countries in the medium-term and in only five countries in the long-term. These findings demonstrate the importance of considering different frequencies when testing the effectiveness of empirically implemented policies. Regarding policy implications, this study suggests focusing on medium- and long-term environmental policies rather than short-term ones.

Sürdürülebilir kırsal turizm, kırsal alanlardaki doğal kaynakların tahrip olmadan sürdürülebilirliğinin sağlanmasına uzun vadede yerel halkın ekonomik gelir elde etmesine yardımcı olmaktadır. Sürdürülebilir kırsal turizmin desteklediği konaklama Ģekli ise ev pansiyonculuğu modelidir. Bu model sürdürülebilir kırsal turizm ile beraber planlandığında, kırsal alanlarda istihdam yaratma, yerel kültürü tanıma, kırsal halkın yaĢam kalitesi ve yaĢam standardını artırmasına olanak sağlar. Sürdürülebilir kırsal turizm bağlamında ele alınan ev pansiyonculuğunun sosyal, kültürel, ekonomik ve çevresel etkilerini değerlendirmek bu çalıĢmanın temel amacıdır. ÇalıĢmada nitel araĢtırma yöntemi kullanılmıĢ olup, elde edilen veriler yarı yapılandırılmıĢ mülakat formu aracılığıyla toplanmıĢtır. AraĢtırmadan elde edilen sonuçlara göre ev pansiyonculuğunun Artvin ilinde çok yaygın biçimde ilerleme kaydedemediği, teĢvik ve desteklerden pansiyoncuların tam anlamıyla yararlanamadığı belirlenmiĢtir. Diğer taraftan bazı bölgelerdeki çok hisseli konut mülkiyetleri ileriye dönük ev pansiyonculuğu planlaması yapılmasının önüne geçmektedir. Hisoglu, Seyit; Comert, R.; Karas, I.R.; Ben Ahmed, M.; Boudhir, A.A.; Ane, B.K.
Energy sources are divided into renewable and non-renewable sources. It can be seen that non-renewable energy resources are not adequately meeting the increased demands of worldwide technological developments, increasing population, and global consumption. Therefore, the demand for renewable resources is increasing day by day. When it comes to the use of non-renewable carbon-based fossil fuels, one of the first areas that come to mind is undoubtedly the Automotive sector. Today, it is realized that one of the main reasons for the lack of electric motor cars compared to petroleum fuelled cars, is the scarcity of electric vehicle charging stations and the difficulty of their accessibility. In this study; an analysis of solar-powered electric charging stations site selection was carried out for electric vehicles. The Ankara-Istanbul highway, which has a high traffic density, was chosen as the sample route for the study. Within the scope of the study, the areas where stations can be installed on the highway were carried out using the Multi-Criteria Decision Making Method with the help of Geographic Information System. Solar radiation, slope, aspect, land use/land cover, traffic volume and proximity to the road, criteria of the route, and site selection analysis were determined as input data. The maps of the determined criteria were arranged according to the study area and prepared for analysis. The criteria maps obtained were reclassified according to the above-mentioned criteria and scoring system. After the reclassification process, the weighting of each criteria which affect the analysis was determined by the researched literature and an overlapping process was carried out. According to the results map produced as a result of the overlay analysis, the appropriate area has been determined for the electric charging stations working with solar energy. Europe's forests provide vital habitat for biodiversity and essential ecosystem services whose provision must be sustained or enhanced over the coming century. However, the potential to secure or increase forest ecosystem services, while securing the habitat requirements of taxa remains unclear, especially within the context of uncertain climate and socio-economic developments. To tease out the associated trade-offs and synergies, we used 10 case study landscapes within nine countries throughout Europe. Starting with the current status of the forests in the case study landscapes, we simulated forest development 100 years into the future. Simulations were embedded in three combined climate and socio-economic frame scenarios based on global and European policies which varied in their climate change mitigation efficiency. Scenarios were translated into country specific projections of climate variables, and resultant demands for wood products. Forest management regimes were projected to vary in response to these scenarios at local scales. The specific combinations of alternative forest management practices were based on parallel research and input from local forest stakeholders. For each case study, a specific forest growth simulator was used. In general, the climate scenarios applied did not cause fundamentally different ecosystem service outputs at the case study level. Our results revealed almost no reduction in outcomes for biodiversity indicators with an increase in wood production, and in some cases synergistic results occurred when diversity was actively promoted as part of the management concept. Net carbon uptake was not strongly correlated with biodiversity, indicating that biodiversity-friendly forest management doesn't need to curtail carbon sequestration. Notably, we obtained heterogeneous results for the relation between sustainable wood production and net carbon uptake. Most scenarios resulted in a more or less reduced net carbon uptake over the long term, often due to stand age class distribution shifts. Levels of sustainable wood production varied widely during the simulation period, from significant increases (Sweden, Lithuania) to minor changes (Slovakia, Turkey) and slight decreases (Ireland, Netherlands). We place our results within the larger context of European forest policy and the challenges of simulating and contrasting forest biodiversity and the ecosystem services that societies depend on.
- MakaleYalnız künye2019The Sustainability of Budget Deficit in Turkey: Hidden Cointegration Relationship
Akkus, Omer; Durmaz, Atakan
This study, starting from the point of intertemporal budget constraint approach, examines the sustainability of budget deficit in Turkey for 1930-2016 period by taking Quintos (1995)'s strength and weakness conditions for the sustainability of the budget deficit and Hakkio and Rush's (1991) approach to how to ensure the sustainability of the budget deficit. In this study, the cointegration relationship between the budget revenues and expenditures is tried to be revealed through the Johansen Cointegration method and the Hidden Cointegration Method developed by Hatemi-J and Irandoust (2012) based on the prior method. Cointegration coefficient is estimated by FMOLS, DOLS, CCR. Results indicate that there is a cointegration relationship between budget revenues and budget expenditures and the budget deficit is sustainable even in weak form in Turkey.
