The Spiritual Roots of Sustainable Consumption Among Muslim Consumers: Environmental and Health Consciousness as Mediating Pathways

Hacıkeleşoğlu, Hızır; Avcı, İbrahim; Vural, Muhammet Enes

Research on sustainable consumption has largely emphasized secular motivations, leaving the psychological role of spirituality/religiosity underexplored within Muslim societies. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the relationship between spirituality and sustainable consumption behaviors (SCBs) among Muslim consumers in Türkiye, with environmental and health consciousness examined as parallel mediating mechanisms. Data were collected from 414 adult Muslim consumers through an online survey and analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural path analysis via Hayes’ PROCESS macro (Model 4). The empirical findings indicate that spirituality is significantly and positively associated with sustainable consumption behaviors both directly and indirectly. Environmental consciousness emerged as a numerically stronger mediating pathway than health consciousness in the relationship between spirituality and sustainable consumption. Notably, when both mediators are included in the model, the direct path from spirituality to sustainable consumption behaviors becomes non-significant, consistent with a full-mediation pattern in the estimated model, in line with the value–attitude–behavior hierarchy. These results suggest that spirituality’s association with consumption decisions is, within the estimated model, transmitted through intervening attitudinal states. The study suggests that sustainable consumption initiatives in Muslim contexts can be meaningfully strengthened by integrating eco-friendly practices with consumers’ underlying spiritual and religious values.

An Investigation on the Links Between Prosociality, Empathic Tendency, and Religiousness

    Korkmaz, Sezai; Hacıkeleşoğlu, Hızır

In this study, prosocial behaviors including helping, altruistic behaviors, giving, forgiveness, thinking and prioritizing someone else, and the relationship between empathic tendency and religiosity were discussed. Correlation, regression and mediation analysis between prosociality, empathic tendency and religiosity were investigated in the study in accordance with this purpose. In this quantitative study, the Prosociality Scale developed by Ayten and Korkmaz, the Empathic Tendency Scale developed by Dökmen and the Individual Religiosity Scale developed by Zagumny et al. were used. Relational survey and documentation methods were used in the research. The sample of the study consists of 267 volunteers. 83 (31.1%) of the respondents are male, 184 (68.9%) are women. Age range varies between 17 and 60, the average age in the study is 25.61. According to the findings of the study, positive significant relationships were found between individual religiosity with prosociality, empathic tendency and religious practices. There were positive and significant relationships between prosociality with religious practices and empathic tendency. Individual religiousness predicted both prosociality and empathic tendency, while religious practices only predicted prosociality. Individual religiosity partially mediated the relationship between empathic tendency and prosociality.

A Research on the Relationship Between Parental Attıtudes and Images of God

    Karaca, Fkaraca; Hacıkeleşoğlu, Hızır

As a dynamic structure, the image of God contains a process that is constantly\rrenewed, changing and progressing cumulatively. The image of God comprise a\rwide area with many cognitive and emotional aspects, as well as individual and\rsocial factors. Perhaps one of the most critical stages of this process is the\rattitudes of parents towards their children. In this sense, the main problem of\rcurrent research is to examine whether there is a differentiation between\rparental attitudes and the images of God.\rThis research has utilized the relational survey model which is one of the\rquantitative research methods. The data set was collected from random\rprobability sampling participants. Research findings demonstrated that there\rwas a statistically significant association between parental attitudes and God\rimage. Accordingly, emotional warmth-oriented parental attitudes were\rpositively associated with balanced and love oriented God images; rejectionist\rparental attitudes were positively associated with fear/punishment-oriented and\rdismissive God images. Also, parental attitudes were a significant predictor of\rthe image of God
