DO ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATIONS, TRADE, AND ECONOMIC GROWTH AFFECT THE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES? PANEL AUGMENTED MEAN GROUP AND COMMON CORRELATED EFFECT ESTIMATIONS

    Akyol, Mehmet; Soyyigit, Semanur

This study assessed the environmental technological innovation (ETI) of the 13 countries with the highest industrial added value (China, the United States, Japan, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, South Korea, France, Russia, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia) over the period between 1992 and 2019. The objective is to evaluate the impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, trade openness (TO), and economic growth (EG) on the ecological footprint (EFP). In this study, a panel data analysis was conducted utilizing the second-generation PANIC unit root test, the Westerlund cointegration test, the Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality test, and the common correlated effect mean group (CCEMG) and augmented mean group (AMG) estimator methods. The results of the analysis demonstrate that, according to the CCEMG, ETI exerts a mitigating influence on EFP in Indonesia. In numerous countries, CO2 has been observed to increase EFP, whereas in a select few countries, EG has been found to have a similar effect. Conversely, in China and South Korea, TO has been identified as a factor contributing to an increase in EFP, while in the United States, it has been identified as a factor that contributes to a decrease in EFP. The AMG indicates that ETI results in a decrease in EFP in Brazil and Indonesia, while simultaneously producing an increase in Mexico. While CO2 is observed to increase EFP in numerous countries, EG is seen to increase EFP in many countries, although this is only the case in India. TO is found to decrease EFP in China, India, South Korea, and Brazil, while simultaneously increasing it in Germany. The empirical evidence suggests that policies aimed at limiting uncontrolled economic growth, prioritising environmentally friendly technological innovations, improving international trade processes and policies with the objective of reducing emissions, and developing environmentally friendly processes and products in production are likely to be effective.

Effect of Credit Risk on Financial Performance of Deposit Banks in the BIST Bank Index; [Kredı̇ Rı̇skı̇ nı̇ n BIST Banka Endeksı̇ ndekı̇ Mevduat Bankalarının Fı̇ nansal Performansına Etkı̇sı̇ 2]

    Erdoğdu, Aylin; Pala, Fahrettin

This study analyses the relationship between credit risk and the financial performance of nine Turkish deposit banks listed on Borsa Istanbul (BIST) from 2010 to 2021. Using panel data, it employs profitability ratios (ROA, ROE, NIM) as performance indicators, and various credit risk metrics (NLTA, NPL, TLTD, CAR) as explanatory variables. GDP growth and inflation are included as control variables. The credit risk rankings identified ICBC Turkey Bank A.Ş. as having the lowest credit risk and Şeker Bank A.Ş. as the highest, using the WASPAS multi-criteria decision-making technique.

Greening the OECD: Unravelling the Complex Relationship Between Natural Resource Efficiency, Technological Innovation and Population Density on Ecological Footprint

Çabas, Meral; Beser, Nazife Ozge; Ayaydin, Hasan; Barut, Abdulkadir; Magazzino, Cosimo

This paper aims to investigate the relationship among green environmental technologies, resource efficiency, population density and ecological footprint in 38 OECD member countries between 2000 and 2019. The Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQREG) and Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimators are used to analyse this relationship. Based on the results, strong evidence of a negative relationship between green environmental technologies, resource efficiency, population density and ecological footprint emerges, suggesting that these factors contribute to environmental improvement in OECD economies. Overall, the findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics among these variables and provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders striving for sustainable environmental management and policy formulation. In this context, countries should develop standard guidelines and best practices on green technologies and resource efficiency, making it easier for sectors to adapt in these areas.

Does structural change matter for sustainable development in newly industrialized countries? Fresh evidence from a new sustainability indicator

Artan, Seyfettin; Erdogan, Sinan; Recepoglu, Muersit; Çakir, Suemeyra cay; Hayaloglu, Pinar; Çakir, Mehmet Ali

The economic gap between developed and developing economies has been diminishing due to the recent rapid economic growth performance of developing economies. While achieving this swift growth level, developing economies have structurally transformed their economies. However, the impact of this structural change on environmental sustainability remains unclear. Therefore, this study focuses on the impacts of structural change, energy structure, and economic growth on the load capacity factor, a comprehensive sustainability indicator, in newly industrialized countries during 2000-2020. To this end, second-generation panel data techniques, which account for cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity, are used to provide more robust and reliable estimates. The results show that economic growth, structural change, and fossil energy utilization decrease the load capacity factor while renewable energy utilization increases it. These findings underscore the need for energy efficiency and resource-conscious policies that align with environmental sustainability while promoting economic growth, highlighting their crucial role in the future of sustainable development.

The Determinants of Immigrants’ Skill Composition

Karapınar Kocağ, Esra; Li, Yutong; Popescu, Cristina Raluca Gh.

Movements of labor across the world is an ongoing debate in the literature in terms of its drivers and results in sending and receiving areas. Skill composition of immigrant labor has been discussed by several papers, although they generally focused on visa policies or firm level productivity. However, this paper focuses on the relationship between immigrants’ educational attainment and government budgeting on research and development (R&D). Panel data analysis is applied for European countries, along with instrumental variable approach as a robustness check. Findings reveal that higher budget allocation for R&D is associated with higher skill level of immigrants within overall immigrant population. This finding is driven by young immigrants whose ages are between 25 and 34 and female immigrants in these countries, suggesting that this relationship varies among sub-groups of immigrants, which would have significant policy implications. Hence, the novel and original approach of the paper resides in the deciding factors of immigrants’ skill composition.

The Relationship between Taxation and Democracy: Panel Causality Analysis for Developing Countries

    Türedi, Salih; Topal, Mehmet Hanefi

This study analysis the relation between democracy and taxation in the context of developing countries. At the end of empirical analysis covering 60 countries by focusing on the period of 2006-2012, findings showing a two-way causality relation between taxation and democracy were reached. Accordingly, an increase in taxation level affects rule of law, organizational right, freedom of expression and belief positively in the countries analyzed. Briefly, it plays a vital role in the development of democracy by making a contribution to the enhancement of civil liberties. On the other hand, improvements in democratic rights and freedoms increase the number of citizens paying their taxes in full and on time, thus increases taxation level, by strengthening the harmony between citizens and state.

Accident analysis with the random parameters negative binomial panel count data model

Coruh, Emine; Bilgic, Abdulbaki; Tortum, Ahmet

We analyzed factors affecting the frequency of accident counts in 81 cities over a three-year period (2008-2010) with monthly data using random-parameters negative binomial panel count data models. Among models considered, the random parameters model with the correlated coefficients outperformed the other models and was found to fit the data best with almost a perfect prediction of the conditional mean level. Most of variables used to control for the variation in the frequency of accident counts play crucial role with higher significance levels. Also, marginal effects and elasticity estimates were derived to get more insight into the effects of percent and unit changes in the dependent variable in response to changes in the exogenous variables.
