Shading Effect of Transparent Photovoltaic Panels on Crops Underneath Agrivoltaic Systems

Esmaeilzad, Nasim Seyedpour; Dino, Ipek Gursel; Güney, Dilara; Yildirim, Yusuf Ersoy; Turan, Rasit; Özden, Talat; Amaducci, S

Agrivoltaic systems combine soil-grown crops with photovoltaic (PV) panels erected several meters above the ground. Combining solar panels and food crops on the same land can maximize land utilization. Under the PV panels, however, microclimate factors like solar radiation, air temperature, humidity, and soil temperature change. An agrivoltaic system must optimize sunlight sharing between solar panels and crops to maximize food energy production. It has been challenging to improve and analyze the performance of agrivoltaic systems due to the lack of a defined crop-specific parameter. In this work, we present a practical option to partially replace bifacial modules with semi-transparent ones, providing comparable levels of crop protection and greater climate change resilience while generating green energy and increasing land-use efficiency. The agrivoltaic system must be tailored to satisfy the needs of crops. For this purpose, a simulation model was conducted, which examined the impact of module transparency and cell layout based on light availability.

Investigation of the Relationship among Fault Types, Focal Depths, and Ionospheric TEC Anomalies before Large Earthquakes between 2000 and 2020

Ulukavak, Mustafa; Yalçinkaya, Mualla; Kayikçi, Emine Tanir; Öztürk, Serkan; Kandemir, Raif; Karsli, Hakan

In this study, the relationships between possible ionospheric total electron content (TEC) anomalies and earthquake focal depths and fault types were investigated using 3,099 global earthquakes with Mw >= 6.0 between 2000 and 2020. The relationship between the ionospheric TEC changes and earthquakes has been previously discussed in the literature. However, very few studies have examined the relationship between the focal depths and the fault types of these earthquakes. In general, three indices, namely the disturbance storm-time index (Dst), the planetary geomagnetic activity index (Kp), and the solar flux (F10.7), are used to characterize the space weather conditions (SWC) that affect TEC anomalies and to identify the active/quiet days for future earthquakes. In this study, 13 different indices were used: indices that measured solar activity included proton flux (Pf) at six different energy levels, F10.7, and extreme ultraviolet (EUV0.1-50 nm and EUV26-34 nm). Meanwhile, geomagnetic storm indices included Dst, Kp, the z-component of the magnetic field index (Bz), and proton density (P-d). By using the ionospheric TEC values derived from global ionosphere maps (GIM-TEC), both negative and positive ionospheric TEC anomalies were observed for 15 days before and 4 days after the earthquakes using a statistical analysis technique that involved a 15-day moving median. The earthquakes were grouped according to their fault types (normal, thrust, and strike-slip) and focal depths (shallow, intermediate, and deep). Their relationships with the negative and positive TEC anomalies in the quiet days before the earthquake were examined. Negative and positive anomalies were observed approximately 3-12 days before earthquakes that occurred on normal faults, approximately 5-8 days before earthquakes that occurred on thrust faults, and approximately 1-12 days before earthquakes that occurred on strike-slip faults. The average TEC anomaly changes were calculated to be 43.4% total electron content unit (TECU) for normal faults, 44.8% TECU for thrust faults, and 41.3% TECU for strike-slip faults. Positive anomaly values were exhibited by larger earthquakes on normal and thrust faults, whereas negative anomaly values tended to occur on strike-slip faults. Negative and positive TEC anomalies were detected around 3-12 days before shallow earthquakes, around 1-13 days before intermediate-depth earthquakes, and around 1-12 days before deep earthquakes. The average TEC anomaly changes were calculated to be 44.4% TECU for shallow earthquakes, 43.3% TECU for intermediate-depth earthquakes, and 42.6% TECU for deep earthquakes. Positive anomaly values were also found to be higher than the negative anomaly values in each group. We propose that there is a relationship between the ionospheric TEC anomalies that occur before large earthquakes and their fault types and focal depths. Piyade, Hamdi Burak; Basoglu, Mahmut; Gürsoy, Ersan

Objective: Thyroid gland surgery and its surgical complications are situations that a surgeon frequently encounters in his daily practice. In our study, it was aimed to examine the effect of different treatment methods given to patients who underwent thyroidectomy on hypocalcemia. Material and Methods: Three hundred and seventy-one patients who underwent thyroidectomy at Ondokuz Mayis University Medical Faculty General Surgery clinic between December 2016 and January 2021 were retrospectively included in the study. Parameters such as surgery indications, fine needle aspiration biopsy results, preoperative serum calcium values, type of surgery, serum calcium values at postoperative 1st day and 1st month, postoperative hospital stay, drugs prescribed at discharge, histopathological diagnosis of the patient, and whether there was incidental parathyroidectomy or not were included. Results: Mean age of 371 patients who underwent thyroidectomy was 49 (19-82) years. Total thyroidectomy was the most common type of thyroidectomy with 61% (n= 225) of the patients. There was a significant decrease in pre- op and post-op calcium values in all three types of surgery performed on the patients, and there was no significant difference between the different types of surgery. Post-operative day one and month one serum calcium values were significantly increased in all groups (p=.000). The increase in post-op serum calcium level was most common in the group using calcium carbonate + cholecalciferol + calcitriol. Conclusion: The use of post-op calcitriol in patients undergoing thyroidectomy seems to be quite effective in preventing the development of hypocalcemia.

Serum heparanase levels and left atrial/left atrial appendage thrombus in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation

Yilmaz, Mehmet Fatih; Acar, Emrah; Inanir, Mehmet; Karabay, Can Yucel; Izgi, Ibrahim Akin

Introduction Data regarding the possible role of heparanase (HPA) in the occurrence of left atrial/left atrial appendage (LA/LAA) thrombus in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is lacking. The goal of the present study was to assess the association between plasma levels of HPA and LA/LAA thrombus in AF. Methods A total of 687 patients with nonvalvular AF (NVAF) without anticoagulation therapy were included from January 2016 to June 2019. Serum HPA analysis was performed with a commercially available human ELISA kit. Logistic regression models were used to test for association. Results Serum HPA levels were significantly higher in patients with LA/LAA thrombus than in those without LA/LAA thrombus (270.8 [193.4 +/- 353.2] pg/mL vs 150.3 [125.2 +/- 208.4] pg/mL; P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, serum HPA remained a significantly independent predictor of LA/LAA thrombus (odds ratio 1.674, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.339-2.289, P < 0.001). In the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, HPA showed a predictive value with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.757 (95% CI 0.652-0.810, P < 0.001). The optimal cutoff level for HPA predicting LA/LAA thrombus was 210.7 pg/mL, with a sensitivity of 74.3% and a specificity of 64.8%. Conclusion An elevated HPA level was associated with the presence of LA/LAA thrombus in patients with AF. HPA might portend the risk for the prothrombotic state in AF patients.

The cultural practice of decluttering as household work and its potentials for sustainable consumption

Muster, Viola; Iran, Samira; Muensch, Marlene

Popular literature and guidebooks on minimalism and decluttering have brought the idea of less is more into the mainstream. Although decluttering constitutes a central household chore in consumer societies, it is rarely communicated as work within the current popular minimalism discourse, but rather as an expression of self-care. Whether and to what extent this lifestyle minimalism can contribute to sustainable consumption has - with a few exceptions - not yet been studied in detail. In this article, decluttering is first conceptualized in between housework and self-care. Based on this work, potentials and limits for the promotion of sustainable consumption are outlined. Finally, initial insights from an ongoing citizen science project on decluttering in Germany are presented. The qualitative results from two workshops and two reflection exercises show that the main motivation for participants is the dissatisfaction with their multitude of possessions and the desire for fewer material possessions in the future. The decision to declutter can be understood as a window of opportunity in which individuals are willing to reflect on and realign their possessions and desires for goods. Thus, we argue that decluttering can be a relevant starting point for changing consumption behavior toward (more) sustainable consumption. At the same time, it remains unclear whether and to what extent the participants' willingness to change regarding possessions and consumption actually leads to more sustainable consumption behavior after decluttering. It is even conceivable that the newly gained space will stimulate additional consumption. Decluttering would then rather function as a catalyst for further consumption (and would have no or rather a negative contribution to sustainability goals). Further research is needed to shed light on this.

Simultaneous autonomous system and powerplant design for morphing quadrotors

Sahin, Huseyin; Kose, Oguz; Oktay, Tugrul

Purpose This study aims to optimize autonomous performance (i.e. both longitudinal and lateral) and endurance of the quadrotor type aerial vehicle simultaneously depending on the autopilot gain coefficients and battery weight. Design/methodology/approach Quadrotor design processes are critical to performance. Unmanned aerial vehicle durability is an important performance parameter. One of the factors affecting durability is the battery. Battery weight, energy capacity and discharge rate are important design parameters of the battery. In this study, proper autopilot gain coefficients and battery weight are obtained by using a stochastic optimization method named as simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA). Because there is no direct correlation between battery weight and battery energy density, artificial neural network (ANN) is benefited to obtain battery energy density corresponding to resulted battery weight found from SPSA algorithm. By using the SPSA algorithm optimum performance index is obtained, then obtained data is used for longitudinal and lateral autonomous flight simulations. Findings With SPSA, the best proportional integrator and derivative (PID) coefficients and battery weight, energy efficiency and endurance were obtained in case of morphing. Research limitations/implications It takes a long time to find the most suitable battery values depending on quadrotor endurance. However, this situation can be overcome with the proposed SPSA. Practical implications It is very useful to determine quadrotor endurance, PID coefficients and morphing rate using the optimization method. Social implications Determining quadrotor endurance, PID coefficients and morphing rate using the optimization method provides advantages in terms of time, cost and practicality. Originality/value The proposed method improves quadrotor endurance. In addition, with the SPSA optimization method and ANN, the parameters required for endurance will be obtained faster and more securely. In addition, the energy density according to the battery weight also contributes to the clean environment and energy efficiency.

Evaluation of Serum Procalcitonin, Neutrophil-lymphocyte Ratio and Platelet-lymphocyte Ratio in Pregnancies with Threatened Abortion

Aydin, Sakine Merve; Taskömür, Aysun Tekeli

Objective: The etiology of Threatened Abortion is not clearly known. One of the hypotheses thought to play a role in the pathophysiology of threatened abortion is that bleeding occurring in threatened abortion causes the development of a chronic inflammatory reaction in the decidua. Because of this hypothesis, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between a threatened abortion and inflammatory markers procalcitonin, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). Methods: This is a prospective, controlled study. Serum procalcitonin, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio of 55 pregnant women diagnosed with threatened abortion were compared with the results of 55 healthy pregnant women. ROC analysis of procalcitonin, NLR and PLR was performed for threatened abortions. Results: Procalcitonin and NLR levels were significantly higher in the threatened abortions group than in the control group (p < 0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) in ROC analysis was within the 95% confidence interval for procalcitonin and NLR, both of which were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Procalcitonin and NLR resulted as appropriate parameters as diagnostic decision-makers in predicting threatened abortions. Conclusion: There is an association between procalcitonin and NLR and threatened abortion. This result may support that inflammatory reaction plays a role in the etiology of threatened abortion.

TURKEY'S LIBYA APPROACH AND IRINI OPERATION ON THE GREECE ISSUE

    Gürdal, Elif; Ince, Fuat

After the overthrow of the Gaddafi administratio, UN and NATO intervention in Libyan lands took place, and then a political multi-headed structure emerged. Shortly before the overthrow of the Gaddafi administration, energy reserves of which workability was discovered have emerged in the Eastern Mediterranean. This discovery has been an important factor of the political confusion and the effort to carry out the power struggle between states through Libya. Greece tries to be effective in the political authority that is tried to be created in Libya and tries to passivate Turkey in the Aegean and the Mediterranean. In this power struggle, Turkey signed the Delimitation of The Maritime Jurisdiction Areas in The Mediterranean and Military Cooperation Agreements with the National Government of Accord in Libya both to respond to the defense of the Aegean land and sea areas occupied by Greece, to protect the jurisdiction rights in the Eastern Mediterranean and to protect the maritime jurisdictions belonging to the TRNC. These agreements disturbed other states in the region who were struggling for power. Therefore, the EU declared itself authority to control the arms embargo requested by the UN on Libya and launched the IRINI operation. However, the IRINI operation is seen as an attempt to squeeze Turkey in the Mediterranean region. In the light of these information and researches, this study is a qualitative research that handles Turkey's Eastern Mediterranean and Libya approach th

Analysis of discontinuous contact problem in two functionally graded layers resting on a rigid plane by using finite element method

    Polat, Alper; Kaya, Yusuf

In this study, the problem of discontinuous contact in two functionally graded (FG) layers resting on a rigid plane and loaded by two rigid blocks is solved by the finite element method (FEM). Separate analyzes are made for the cases where the top surfaces of the problem layers are metal, the bottom surfaces are ceramic and the top surfaces are ceramic and the bottom surfaces are metal. For the problem, it is accepted that all surfaces are frictionless. A two-dimensional FEM analysis of the problem is made by using a special macro added to the ANSYS package program The solution of this study, which has no analytical solution in the literature, is given with FEM. Analyzes are made by loading different Q and P loads on the blocks. The normal stress (sigma y) distributions at the interfaces of FG layers and between the substrate and the rigid plane interface are obtained. In addition, the starting and ending points of the separations between these surfaces are determined. The normal stresses (sigma x, sigma y) and shear stresses (tau xy) at the point of separation are obtained along the depth. The results obtained are shown in graphics and tables. With this method, effective results are obtained in a very short time. In addition, analytically complex and long problems can be solved with this method.

The Relationship between the Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Cardiovascular Diseases with Self- Care Ability and Life Quality

Kulakaç, Nursen; Uzun, Sevda; Sayilan, Aylin Aydin

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading global causes of morbidity and mortality. Lifestyle changes are critical for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and improving self-care levels during treatment. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and the quality of life and self-care ability in individuals with cardiovascular disease.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population in this cross-sectional and correlational research consisted of cardiovascular patients hospitalized in a public hospital between 1st April and 30th June 2018. One hundred and six patients agreeing to participate in this study were selected for sampling. A Patient Information Form, the Exercise of Self-Care Scale, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale-Short Form were employed as the data collection tools.RESULTS: The mean age of the patients in this study was 62.83 +/- 1.40 years, 59.4% were women, and 34.0% had coronary heart disease. The patients' mean self-care score was 101.18 +/- 22.31, and their mean quality of life score was 28.61 +/- 9.50. Age, education, diagnosis and duration of disease, constipation, and CAM use were found to affect their quality of life (p<0.005). A positive correlation was determined between CAM use and self-care ability.CONCLUSION: The use of CAM in individuals with cardiovascular disease has a positive effect on self-care ability and enhances their quality of life.
